Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by the presence of tics and associated behavioral problems. Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS), The PedsQL Pediatric Pain Questionnaire, and Pediatric Pain Coping Inventory were used to assess the severity of tics, the severity of the pain, the location of the pain and pain coping strategies both from children’s and parents’ perspectives. Sixty percent of children demonstrated pain (past or present); the pain was reported by 72% of parents raising children with TS. The pain most commonly was cervical, throat, shoulder, ocular, and joint pain; most children declared pain located in more than one part of the body. Consistency between the declarations of children and their parents in coping with pain was observed. Pain should be recognized as a common comorbid aspect of tic disorders in childhood and therapeutic treatment must include the reduction of pain caused by tics.

A child who starts school education enters a new stage of its life. School readiness in children at school entry provides them success to meet the requirements. The aim of this study was to show the evolution of recommendations directed to parents about how to prepare a child for school education. The subject of the study is to identify the characteristics and skills considerated by the authors of guidebooks for parents to be the most important in school. The source material for this study are Polish guidebooks for parents published in the years 1918-1989. Dziecko rozpoczynające naukę w szkole wkracza w zupełnie nowy etap swojego życia. Aby mogło sprostać stawianym przed nim wymaganiom, niezbędne jest osiągnięcie przez nie gotowości szkolnej. Celem niniejszej analizy jest ukazanie ewolucji zaleceń kierowanych do rodziców w zakresie przygotowania dziecka do rozpoczęcia edukacji szkolnej. Przedmiotem badania są cechy oraz umiejętności, jakie twórcy poradników uznawali za niezbędne dziecku w chwili podjęcia przez nie nauki w szkole. Materiał źródłowy podjętych analiz stanowią poradniki dla rodziców wydane w latach 1918-1989.

The contributions in this book focus on U.S. migration policies, receiving society, ethnic communities and return migration. The authors analyze various aspects of migratory history ranging from the nineteenth to the twenty-first century. They cover such topics as the times when Eastern European immigrants in the USA encountered hostility and marginalization, the efforts to create American Polonia military formations during the WWI, the problem of ethnic mobilization among Ukrainian political migrants in the U.S. as well as how state policies influence the movement of people. Niniejsza książka jest pomyślana jako kompendium wiedzy o polityce migracyjnej Włoch w określonym kontekście społeczno-politycznym. Jej głównym celem jest próba syntetycznego przedstawienia procesu kształtowania się polityki migracyjnej Włoch. (…) Jest to zarazem historia włoskich migracji w pigułce, próba ukazania najważniejszych procesów oraz przedstawienia głównych argumentów w toczonych na temat migracji dyskusjach i sporach. Przyjęty zakres czasowy pozwala na ukazanie procesu upolitycznienia kwestii migracyjnej i tworzenia regulacji prawnych zarówno w dobie masowej emigracji, jak i w okresie ewolucji Włoch z państwa wysyłającego w państwo przyjmujące imigrantów. Szerokie potraktowanie polityki migracyjnej, łączące wyjazdy i napływ cudzoziemców, umożliwia również dostrzeżenie podobieństw w publicznych dyskusjach i uzasadnieniach przyjmowanych rozwiązań normatywnych oraz pozwala zobaczyć, w jaki sposób władze postrzegają swoją rolę w zarządzaniu migracjami.

The origins of this book are to be found in the wish to promote and enhance cooperation between scholars from Visegrad countries: Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia. In spite of significant interest in American Studies in each country there has so far been no regular cooperation among the scholars, researchers and students. Therefore, we invited authors representing various disciplines relating to American studies to join us in an attempt to integrate scholars and create an academic space for future projects and educational programs. This volume is a consciously interdisciplinary exploration of contemporary. America and we hope that it proves useful for students in the whole range of social and cultural studies as well as for those who share an interest in American society.

The aim of this paper is an attempt to reconstruct the recommendations made to parents, especially mothers, in the care of hygiene and health of children and youth. The basis of these findings is the reading of handbooks on health and hygiene, and education of the child and youth, published in Poland in the second half of the 19th and 20th century (1850-1970). It should be emphasized that the content of advice is very rich and diverse. These related issues concern proper hygiene of pregnancy, childbirth, the health of infants and toddlers. It was pointed out how to act in the field of child nutrition, clothing, care for the cleanliness of the body, how to decorate children’s room, recommended outdoor activities, sex education and sexual awareness. Przedmiotem analiz uczyniono problematykę wychowania zdrowotnego i higieny dzieci i młodzieży w świetle poradników z lat 1850-1970. Celem podjętych badań jest próba odtworzenia, systematyki, a przede wszystkim ukazania ewolucji porad i wskazówek ze wskazanego zakresu w ponadstuletnim okresie rozwoju literatury poradnikowej. Podstawą źródłową analizowanej problematyki uczynione zostaną poradniki wychowawcze oraz higieniczne dla rodziców, wychowawców oraz opiekunów dzieci i młodzieży okresu zaborów, II RP oraz PRL. Zamieszczane w tym okresie na stronach poradników informacje i porady obrazują przemiany w postrzeganiu i rozumieniu zasad higieny, troski o zdrowie i propagowania zdrowego stylu życia dzieci i młodzieży, będących konsekwencją zmian na polu nauk medycznych, higienicznych oraz pedagogicznych.

Italians are one of the fastest aging societies in the world. The percentage of people over 60 years old is over 20%. There is also a systematic grow of the number of people who are over 80 years old. Many of them suffer from various medical conditions and need help in everyday life activities. The Italian social help system is traditionally based on family solidarity. Relatives (mostly women) are expected to carry the burden of caring for dependent members of a family. State structures are not prepared for replacing or at least supporting families in all these tasks. Families unable to fulfill this role have been searching for alternative solutions. One of the most popular one is to employ a personal attendant. Due to the lack of interest of the Italian workers for this kind of work, the gap is being filled by female migrants. The aim of the article is to present the work of foreign female caregivers and domestic workers in a broader context that includes the transformation of paid domestic service in recent decades and the ongoing social and demographic changes.

During the time of Second Polish Republic over a hundred guide books for parents were published. They represented two distinct trends of thinking about child-conservative and innovative. The first one presented the child as being “incomplete”, “immature”, only pretending to become a valuable person-adult. The main purpose of upbringing was the morality and discipline was regarded as an effective means to achieve it. The second trend, derived from the ideas of the New Education Movement presented a radically different way of understanding the child and childhood. The specificity of distinct psychic structure and dynamics of child development were considered. Childhood has become a valuable time, the child has gained the right to live the present. W okresie Drugiej Rzeczypospolitej na polskim rynku ukazało się ponad sto poradników wychowawczych dla rodziców. Reprezentowały one dwa odrębne nurty myślenia o dziecku – konserwatywne oraz nowatorskie. Pierwszy z nich przedstawiał dziecko jako istotę „niepełną”, „niedojrzałą”, pretendującą dopiero do stania się wartościowym człowiekiem – dorosłym. Głównym celem wychowania było kształtowanie moralności, a karność i dyscyplinę uważano za skuteczny środek umożliwiający jego osiągnięcie. Drugi z nurtów, wywodzący się z idei Nowego Wychowania, prezentował skrajnie odmienny sposób pojmowania dziecka i dzieciństwa. Uznano swoistość struktury psychicznej i odrębność dynamiki rozwojowej dziecka. Dzieciństwo stało się czasem wartościowym; dziecko zyskało prawo do przeżywania teraźniejszości zgodnie z indywidualnymi potrzebami i możliwościami rozwoju.
