International audience; In the first half of the nineteenth century, industrialization increased the demand for sponges extracted by the sponge fishermen of the Dodecanese Archipelago in the Aegean Sea. This had widespread repercussions, leading to increasing numbers of sponge fishermen, the geographical expansion of fishing zones and the evolution and diversification of fishing techniques. In this context, foreign sponge traders imposed the hard-hat diving suit, which enabled divers to remain underwater for several hours without surfacing. It was therefore perceived as being more efficient than traditional skin-diving. But this equipment greatly exacerbated the physical risks faced by the divers, with injuries and fatalities increasing markedly. It also required heavy financial investments that compounded the losses of fishermen and their families. With hindsight, these investments were catalysts of the major socio-economic upheaval that followed. As well as provoking mass revolt among the islanders of the Dodecanese, this entailed modifications in crews and community structure as a nascent model of capitalist organization marked the development of the sponge fishery.

International audience; Global change impacts Mediterranean fisheries and the dependent human populations. Overfishing and epizootic diseases related to extreme climatic events are currently accepted as the main threats to the production of commercial bath sponges. Believing that other factors could have impacted this insular fishery, we assembled a 150-year-long series of sponge fishing data for Greece that was analyzed in relation with variations of the pressure and of the socio-economic contexts. Sponge fishing experienced huge variations, with notably two distant short periods when the production collapsed (late nineteenth century and between 1985 and 1991). Before the 1970s, these variations are mainly attributed to socio-economic and political changes. The monitoring of the catches per unit effort indicates a clear overfishing impact only after 1977. However, after the last collapse of the overall production which followed the severe disease outbreak of the late 1980s, the catch per unit effort showed a positive trend, which tends to indicate that the stocks available bear the present fishing pressure. Fishermen have adapted towards sustainable practices, by reducing their crew and also diversifying their targets, which nevertheless calls to a more accurate monitoring of such a small-scale fishery.

Este artículo contiene 18 páginas, 4 figuras., Good datasets of geo-referenced records of alien species are a prerequisite for assessing the spatio-temporal dynamics of biological invasions, their invasive potential, and the magnitude of their impacts. However, with the exception of first records on a country level or wider regions, observations of species presence tend to remain unpublished, buried in scattered repositories or in the personal databases of experts. Through an initiative to collect, harmonize and make such unpublished data for marine alien and cryptogenic species in the Mediterranean Sea available, a large dataset comprising 5376 records was created. It includes records of 239 alien or cryptogenic taxa (192 Animalia, 24 Plantae, 23 Chromista) from 19 countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. In terms of records, the most reported Phyla in descending order were Chordata, Mollusca, Chlorophyta, Arthropoda, and Rhodophyta. The most recorded species was Caulerpa cylindracea, followed by Siganus luridus, Magallana sp. (cf. gigas or angulata) and Pterois miles. The dataset includes records from 1972 to 2020, with the highest number of records observed in 2018. Among the records of the dataset, Dictyota acutiloba is a first record for the Mediterranean Sea. The MedSeaCan and CorSeaCan cruises (November 2008 to August 2010) took place along the French continental shelf, from the Spanish border to Monaco (MedSeaCan) and the western coast of Corsica (CorSeaCan). They provided a reference state of the ecosystem in the general context of deep-sea canyons, through direct observations with a remotely operated vehicle and a human occupied vehicle. Both devices collected photographic, video and biological samples, and all have been integrated in the specifically designed ZOOlogical Data Exploitation system working platform (Goujard and Fourt. 31 October 2014). These cruises were the very first attempt to systematically explore French Mediterranean deep-sea canyons. The same data acquisition techniques were used throughout the cruises and the same scientific team treated the data. Extensive remotely operated vehicle exploration appears to be an appropriate method for comparing canyons and better apprehend cold-water coral distribution. Moreover, this method gives the possibility to initiate a monitoring programme of the deep-sea benthos.

The study presents Cladorhizidae collected during Ifremer cruises in the Atlantic Ocean from 1981 to 2004. Fifteen species are described from the generaAbyssocladia,Asbestopluma,ChondrocladiaandCladorhiza, with complete descriptions of five new species. While a couple of species were collected at 670–1010 m depth at the Rockall Bank, most species were collected at middle to lower bathyal and abyssal depths (~2000–5000 m), ranging from the northern Atlantic to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and the coast of Africa at Gabon–Congo. A biogeographic analysis of currently known Arctic, Atlantic and some Antarctic species shows that the majority of included cladorhizids are described from the north-east Atlantic and Arctic Oceans while a lower number of species are known from other parts of the Atlantic Ocean. Large regions are poorly investigated, and previously undescribed species can be expected when sampling in these areas. A regional mostly endemic cladorhizid fauna is predicted for shelf and upper slope areas. Species in the lower bathyal and abyssal seem on the other hand to have a wider geographical distribution.

International audience; Marine cave communities have been a continued source of ecological surprises, among other things because of their close ecological and evolutionary ties with the deep sea. The discovery of cladorhizid sponges, the deepest occurring poriferan family, in shallow Mediterranean caves in the 1990s was one such surprise, leading to the generally accepted hypothesis that the whole family was carnivorous, an unprecedented feeding mode for sponges. The recent observation of the cave species Asbestopluma hypogea in the Mediterranean bathyal, confirmed the view that some shallow caves can occasionally shelter otherwise deep-dwelling species. Here we present new distribution data of A.hypogea, from deep Mediterranean locations, and for the first time from Atlantic locations. Among the new Atlantic records, the most surprising ones are located in three different geographic areas (Ria de Arousa, Groix Island and Cherbourg) of the NW European coasts, from the Iberian Peninsula to the English Channel, where A.hypogea reaches SCUBA depths (5-50m), while not sheltered in marine caves. The carnivorous sponge however reaches its shallowest occurrence (5m), in a small cave at Groix Island. The ecological significance of these discoveries, particularly the very patchy distribution and peculiar dynamics, are noteworthy, and the shallow occurrence of A.hypogea, together with other deep-water or uncommon species, constitute unique assemblages that must be considered in conservation plans.

International audience; During the exploration of the NW Mediterranean deep-sea canyons (MedSeaCan and CorSeaCan cruises), several hexactinellid sponges were observed and collected by ROV and manned submersible. Two of them appeared to be new species of Farrea and Tretodictyum. The genus Farrea had so far been reported with doubt from the Mediterranean and was listed as ``taxa inquirenda'' for two undescribed species. We here provide a proper description for the specimens encountered and sampled. The genus Tretodictyum had been recorded several times in the Mediterranean and in the near Atlantic as T. tubulosum Schulze, 1866, again with doubt, since the type locality is the Japan Sea. We here confirm that the Mediterranean specimens are a distinct new species which we describe. We also provide18S rDNA sequences of the two new species and include them in a phylogenetic tree of related hexactinellids.

Suite à l’acquisition de nouvelles informations sur les habitats marins méditerranéens, une mise à jour du référentiel national était nécessaire pour qu’il soit le reflet des connaissances actuelles. Ces nouvelles informations proviennent principalement de deux campagnes d’exploration des roches profondes et des canyons méditerranéens appelées MEDSEACAN et CORSEACAN, de CARTHAM (Cartographie des Habitats Marins) – deux programmes pilotés par l’Agence des Aires Marines Protégées – ainsi que de propositions émanant directement de la communauté scientifique. En collaboration avec les experts scientifiques benthologues, ces nouvelles observations ont été confrontées à la typologie (Michez et al., 2011) et des modifications et compléments ont été décidés. Ce rapport présente la version actualisée de la partie « Méditerranée » du référentiel français des habitats marins benthiques. Il explique en détail les choix opérés ainsi que les points à approfondir.

The aim of this study was first to assess the relevance of a marine sponge, Spongia officinalis, as a biomonitor of PCB. Twenty-four chlorobiphenyl congeners have been measured along a pollution gradient both in sponges and seawater. S. officinalis displays a capacity to accumulate all types of congeners. The highest concentration factors were found for hexa- and heptachlorobiphenyls. Concentrations recorded in sponges agreed quite well with the PCB concentrations of study sites. The prevalence of CB138 and CB153 definitely demonstrated the urban origin of the PCB detected, despite the ban on their production and the existence of a wastewater treatment plant since 1987. The CB138/CB153 ratio is approximately 1.2 in commercial mixtures as well as in seawater. In sponges, this ratio varies strongly in space and time, from 1 in sponges at the most polluted site to 0.3 at the reference site. This change in the ratio of these two very persistent congeners, which is not observed in seawater, indicates a metabolism of CB138 in sponges. As it was recently demonstrated for nonpersistent organic contaminants, sponges might well be able to degrade PCB, but further work is needed to identify the processes involved.

Mediterranean sponges represent about 10 % of the world sponge biodiversity, with these sessile organisms dominating in terms of diversity and biomass in most of the rocky bottoms shaded from light. After 60 years of intensive study of the sponge diversity along the French coast, we present the first comprehensive reference-list for this biogeographic area. A total of 389 sponge species was recorded, of which 222 known in the Marseille region. In this area, special attention was paid to species from underwater caves. Although this particular habitat appeared as one of the richest, a wealth of hidden diversity still requires description. About 37 % of the sponge diversity can be found in underwater caves, most of these species being also distributed in other habitats. However, 23 % of this sponge diversity is cave-exclusive. An easy and rapid assessment method was developed with a selection of 65 representative sponge species, for the monitoring of semi-dark cave communities. This method, based on data acquisition with photoquadrats and their processing using a DataBase built with ACCESS, was deployed in 13 studied sites. Altogether, this study represents a useful contribution for marine environment managers who might refer to this French reference list and apply the rapid and easy assessment method in the framework of several European Directives and international Conventions.

This baseline information is pivotal to explore present trends, detect future modifications and propose adequate management actions for marine ecosystems. Coralligenous outcrops are a highly diverse and structurally complex deep-water habitat faced with major threats in the Mediterranean Sea. Despite its ecological, aesthetic and economic value, coralligenous biodiversity patterns are still poorly understood. There is currently no single sampling method that has been demonstrated to be sufficiently representative to ensure adequate community assessment and monitoring in this habitat. Therefore, we propose a rapid non-destructive protocol for biodiversity assessment and monitoring of coralligenous outcrops providing good estimates of its structure and species composition, based on photographic sampling and the determination of presence/absence of macrobenthic species. We used an extensive photographic survey, covering several spatial scales (100s of m to 100s of km) within the NW Mediterranean and including 2 different coralligenous assemblages: Paramuricea clavata (PCA) and Corallium rubrum assemblage (CRA). This approach allowed us to determine the minimal sampling area for each assemblage (5000 cm2 for PCA and 2500 cm2 for CRA). In addition, we conclude that 3 replicates provide an optimal sampling effort in order to maximize the species number and to assess the main biodiversity patterns of studied assemblages in variability studies requiring replicates. We contend that the proposed sampling approach provides a valuable tool for management and conservation planning, monitoring and research programs focused on coralligenous outcrops, potentially also applicable in other benthic ecosystems, The research was funded by the Spanish International Cooperation Agency for Development (AECID) (S.
