Abstract

In this study, we recombinantly expressed the V protein of the peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) and evaluated its diagnostic value for PPRV infection using an indirect ELISA (i-ELISA). The optimal concentration of the coated antigen of V protein was 15 ng/well at a serum dilution of 1:400, and the optimal positive threshold value was 0.233. A cross-reactivity assay showed that the V protein-based i-ELISA was specific to PPRV with consistent reproducibility and showed a specificity of 82.6% and a sensitivity of 100% with a virus neutralization test. Using the recombinant V protein as an antigen in ELISA is useful for seroepidemiological studies of PPRV infections. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

34. Carbohydrate receptors, preterm labor, and periodontitis

Abstract

Epidemiological studies suggest that pregnant women with periodontitis experience a moderate risk of preterm labor and low-birth-weight infants. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying this association remain unknown. Bacterial infections and host inflammatory responses initiated by invading bacteria, such as those observed in the pathogenesis of periodontitis, are strongly associated with preterm labor. Various carbohydrate structures assembled by an array of glycosyltransferases mediate bacterial attachment and leukocyte trafficking. I hypothesized that mucin-coated oral and uterine cavities present similar carbohydrate motifs that specify bacterial ecology and leukocyte recruitment in both regions. As a corollary to this theory, I proposed that certain individuals express oligosaccharides that make them susceptible to both periodontitis and preterm labor. I chose laboratory mice as a model system in which to test these suppositions. The first part of the project profiled glycosylation-related genes in the mouse uterus and major salivary glands. I conducted a global analysis of glycosylation-related gene expression patterns in these regions. The study design took into consideration potential effects from the ovarian hormones estrogen and progesterone. The results revealed that both the uterus and the salivary glands contained comprehensive glycosylation machinery enabling the construction of a complex glycome. Significantly, I noted about 300 glycosylation-related genes that were differentially regulated by estrogen and/or progesterone in the mouse uterus, but not in major salivary glands. For a subset of genes, I confirmed the glycoarray data at the mRNA level by quantitative PCR and at the protein level by immunolocalization. In the second part of the project, a bank of lectins and antibodies that recognize specific oligosaccharide structures was used to characterize the glycans expressed in mouse uterine and salivary tissues. Specialized carbohydrate structures that govern bacterial and leukocyte adhesion were detected in both regions. Many of these carbohydrate motifs were differentially regulated by estrogen and/or progesterone in the mouse uterus, as well as in major salivary glands. The information obtained from this project serves as an important prerequisite for developing the mouse as a powerful model system to study the association of periodontitis and preterm labor in the context of carbohydrate-mediated cell-cell adhesion.

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) focuses on the study and the subsequent advances and inventions in machines, systems, and other human intelligence objects, distinguished by thinking skills, learning, adaptability, and decision-making capability. Artificial intelligence is widely formulated and applied in varying ways in education, particularly by universities/colleges. AI is primarily established as information technology, a shift to internet-based and online intelligent education systems, and, eventually, integrated computer systems, other technologies, robotic devices, and internet Talkbots to execute teachers' roles and duties individually or through instructors. Talkbots are limited to audio and text inputs. The Real-Time Communication and AImultimedia service assistance to the learners and teachers helps the education for a higher level of performance. Another trending aspect of higher education is virtual reality or augmented reality. This research designs AI-assisted Real-Time Communication and AI-multimedia Services Framework (AI-RCMF) to support higher education in universities/colleges. The Recurrent-Convolutional Neural Network applies for information decoding from AI-multimedia resources and Dimensional Pose estimation from augmented reality objects. The simulation analysis performed for this framework results in 94.68% accuracy. The other performance metrics such as precision, recall and F1 score are evaluated in the research to compare the proposed model with existing frameworks for higher education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Five novel H5N6 influenza viruses, including four highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses and one low pathogenic avian influenza virus, were isolated from migratory birds in Ningxia, China, in November 2017. To understand the genetic origination of the novel H5N6 virus, and the infectivity and pathogenicity of the four highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses in mammals, phylogeographic analyses and infection studies in mice were performed. The phylogenetic and phylogeographic analyses showed that the H5N6 isolates, which are closely related to the viruses from Korea, Japan and the Netherlands, originated from reassortant virus between H5N8 and HxN6 viruses from western Russia. The animal study revealed that the SBD‐87 isolate presented moderate virulence in mice, suggesting a potential public risk to humans and a potential threat to public health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Currently, intelligent transportation system has been becoming the focus of the society. The video traffic detection system discussed in the paper plays an important part in the ITS, and the image processing technique is used in this system to obtain all the information that is needed in the traffic signal control. On the basis of a new fuzzy control method, the article analyses the problem of traffic signal control in single intersections, proposes the multiple phase fuzzy control algorithm and designs fuzzy controller which takes motorcade's lengh and the next phase difference of motorcade lengh as the fuzzy control variable, thereby creating a real-time, accurate, highly effective and comprehensive transportation system. The simulation result indicated that this plan approaches human's decision-making process, surpassed the timed control, can effectively alleviate the jam of intersection.
