Abstract

Metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs), an emerging class of porous crystalline material, are identified as a promising candidate for tackling the most formidable global challenges due to their unique and intriguing properties including well‐defined porous crystal structure, large specific surface area, and vast tunable chemical and physical property. Air pollution resulting from various toxic gases, volatile organic compounds, and fine particulate matters has posed a big threat to human health and ecological sustainability. In recent years, various MOFs are studied and shown great potential as active materials for air pollution control in both pollutant detection and air quality remediation. In this review, the most recent research progress for MOFs‐based materials for air pollution control is summarized. The discussion is categorized based on the different approaches for air quality control with a focus on the performance correlations to the structure and functionality of MOFs. In addition, the technical merits and downsides of each approach are discussed based on their application scenarios. Finally, the remaining challenges and future research directions in this field are proposed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

22. Rational Design of MOF-Based Hybrid Nanomaterials for Directly Harvesting Electric Energy from Water Evaporation

Abstract

The continuous exploration of clean-energy technology is critical for the sustainable development of society. The recent work on the electric energy harvesting from water evaporation has made a significant contribution to the utilization of clean energy for self-powering systems. Here, a novel metal–organic-framework-based hybrid nanomaterial is delicately designed and synthesized by the growth of UIO-66 nanoparticles on 2D AlOOH nanoflakes. Due to the combined merits from the 2D morphology, which is inherited from the AlOOH nanoflakes, and the high surface potential, which originates from the UIO-66 nanoparticles, the device made of the AlOOH/UIO-66 hybrid nanomaterials can harvest electric energy from natural water evaporation. An open-circuit voltage of 1.63 ± 0.10 V can be achieved on the prototype devices made of the hybrid nanomaterial. As a proof-of-concept application, a small electric appliance, e.g., a digital calculator, is powered up by a 3 × 3 device array connected in a combined series–parallel configuration. © 2020 Wiley-VCH GmbH

Abstract

The fast industrialization process has led to global challenges in the energy crisis and environmental pollution, which might be solved with clean and renewable energy. Highly efficient electrochemical systems for clean-energy collection require high-performance electrocatalysts, including Au, Pt, Pd, Ru, etc. Graphene, a single-layer 2D carbon nanosheet, possesses many intriguing properties, and has attracted tremendous research attention. Specifically, graphene and graphene derivatives have been utilized as templates for the synthesis of various noble-metal nanocomposites, showing excellent performance in electrocatalytic-energy-conversion applications, such as the hydrogen evolution reaction and CO 2 reduction. Herein, the recent progress in graphene-based noble-metal nanocomposites is summarized, focusing on their synthetic methods and electrocatalytic applications. Abstract

Semiconductor nanomaterial-based epitaxial heterostructures with precisely controlled compositions and morphologies are of great importance for various applications in optoelectronics, thermoelectrics, and catalysis. Until now, various kinds of epitaxial heterostructures have been constructed. In this minireview, we will first introduce the synthesis of semiconductor nanomaterial-based epitaxial heterostructures by wet-chemical methods. Various architectures based on different kinds of seeds or templates are illustrated, and their growth mechanisms are discussed in detail. Then, the applications of epitaxial heterostructures in optoelectronics, catalysis, and thermoelectrics are described. Finally, we provide some challenges and personal perspectives for the future research directions of semiconductor nanomaterial-based epitaxial heterostructures.[Figure not available: see fulltext.]. © 2019, © 2019, The Author(s).

Abstract

Controlled synthesis of transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers with unusual crystal phases has attracted increasing attention due to their promising applications in electrocatalysis. However, the facile and large-scale preparation of TMD monolayers with high-concentration unusual crystal phase still remains a challenge. Herein, we report the synthesis of MoX2 (X = Se or S) monolayers with high-concentration semimetallic 1T′ phase by using the 4H/face-centered cubic (fcc)-Au nanorod as template to form the 4H/fcc-Au@MoX2 nanocomposite. The concentrations of 1T′ phase in the prepared MoSe2 and MoS2 monolayers are up to 86% and 81%, respectively. As a proof-of-concept application, the obtained Au@MoS2 nanocomposite is used for the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acid medium, exhibiting excellent performance with a low overpotential of 178 mV at the current density of 10 mA/cm2, a small Tafel slope of 43.3 mV/dec, and excellent HER stability. Abstract

A novel inverse fluidized bed (IFB) was developed to improve membrane fouling mitigation vis-à-vis the conventional aeration method. The fluidized media, whose density was less than water and oleophilic, were more effective than bubbles for both feeds containing oil and particulates due to their greater inertia. The key highlights are (i) for all the conditions investigated, IFB consistently gave a lower trans-membrane pressure (TMP) than aeration at the same energy requirement; (ii) IFB performed better even when the energy input was reduced by 87.5%; (iii) IFB provided an impressive enhancement of up to 54 times that of dead-end filtration. Abstract

We report the synthesis of two-dimensional (2D) NiCo2O4 nanosheet-coated three-dimensional graphene network (3DGN), which is then used as an electrode for high-rate, long-cycle-life supercapacitors. Using the 3DGN and nanoporous nanosheets, an ultrahigh specific capacitance (2173 F g-1 at 6 A g-1), excellent rate capability (954 F g-1 at 200 A g-1) and superior long-term cycling performance (94% capacitance retention after 14000 cycles at 100 A g-1) are achieved.
