Four new solvent-induced Co(II) complexes with chemical formulae [{CoL(μ2-OAc)(MeOH)}2Co] (1), [{CoL(μ2-OAc)(EtOH)}2Co] (2), [{CoL(μ2-OAc)(Py)}2Co] (3) and [{CoL(μ2-OAc)(DMF)}2Co] (4) (H2L = 4-nitro-4'-chloro-2,2'-[(1,3-propylene)dioxybis (nitrilomethylidyne)]diphenol) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, FT-IR, UV-Vis spectra and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Each of the prepared complexes, crystallizing in the space groups P-1 (1 and 4), P21/n (2) and P21/c (3), consists of three Co(II) atoms, two completely deprotonated (L)2- units, two μ-acetato ligands and two coordinated solvent molecules. Although the four complexes 1-4 were synthesized in different solvents, it is worthwhile that the Co(II) atoms in the four complexes 1-4 adopt hexa-coordinated with slightly distorted octahedral coordination geometries, and the ratio of the ligand H2L to Co(II) atoms is 2:3. The complexes 2-4 possess a self-assembled infinite 1D, 2D and 1D supramolecular structures via the intermolecular hydrogen bonds, respectively. Magnetic measurement was performed in the complex 3. Four 3d–4f heteronuclear complexes, [(ZnL)2La(OAc)2]·ClO4·2CHCl3(1), [(ZnL)2La(OAc)2]·CF3SO3·H2O (2), [ZnNd(L)(Py)(NO3)3] (3), and [ZnGd(L)(OAc)(NO3)2] (4) (Py = pyridine; H2L = 6,6′-dimethoxy-2,2′-[ethylenedioxybis(nitrilomethylidyne)]diphenol), have been prepared by one-pot reaction of H2L with zinc(II) acetate, lanthanide(III) ions and Py. Although the heterobinuclear complexes1–4are prepared in the same reaction condition, the Py does not coordinate to Zn(II) of1,2,and4. Instead, the bridgingμ-acetato ligand is present. The coordination of the Py in3leads to smaller distortion of square pyramidal coordination site of Zn(II), the higher coplanarity between the planes of ZnO(phenoxo)2and LnO(phenoxo)2, and the longer Zn⋯Ln distance compared with4. By self-assembly of a Salamo-type ligand H2L [H2L = 1,2-bis(3-methoxysalicylideneaminooxy)ethane] with Ni(OAc)2·4H2O, Ce(NO3)3·6H2O, and H2bdc (H2bdc = terephthalic acid), a novel NiII-CeIII heterometallic complex, [{Ni(L)Ce(NO3)2(CH3OH) (DMF)}2(bdc)], was obtained. Two crystallographically equivalent [Ni(L)Ce(NO3)2(CH3OH)(DMF)] moieties lie in the inversion center, and are linked by one bdc2- ligand leading to a heterotetranuclear dimer, in which the carboxylato group bridges the NiII and CeIII atoms. The asymmetric Salamo-type N2O2 ligand H2L and its corresponding CuII and ZnII complexes [CuL] and [{ZnL}2]·2CH3CN were synthesized and structurally characterized. Crystallographic data of the CuII complex revealed that the CuII ion is tetracoordinate with a slightly distorted square planar arrangement forming a 2D supramolecular plane structure by hydrogen bonding and π···π stacking interactions. In the ZnII complex, the ZnII ions are pentacoordinate in N2O2 tetradentate fashion and intermolecular contacts between ZnII and oxygen atoms result in a head-to-tail dimer. The ZnII ions were found to have slightly distorted square pyramidal and trigonal bipyramidal arrangements, respectively. Hydrogen bonding interactions stabilized the ZnII complex to facilitate self-assembly to a 1D linear chain. The CuII and ZnII complexes show intense photoluminescence with maximum emissions at approx. 426 and 411 nm upon excitation at 360 and 350 nm, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A self-assembled Zn II -Nd III heterohexanuclear coordination compound [Zn₄Nd₂(L)₄(bdc)₂]·2NO₃ based on a hexadentate Salamo-like chelating ligand (H₂L = 1,2-bis(3-methoxysalicylideneaminooxy)ethane]) and H₂bdc (H₂bdc = terephthalic acid) has been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, IR and UV/Vis spectra, and X-ray crystallography. Two crystallographically equivalent [Zn₂Nd(L)₂] moieties lie in the inversion center linked by two (bdc) 2- ligands leading to a heterohexanuclear dimer in which the carboxylato group bridges the Zn II and Nd III atoms. The heteropolynuclear 3d-4f coordination compound includes four Zn II atoms, two Nd III atoms, four completely deprotonated (L) 2- units, two fully deprotonated (bdc) 2- units, and two crystalling nitrate ions. All of the Zn II atoms in the Zn II -Nd III coordination compound possess trigonal bipyramidal geometries and the Nd III atoms possess distorted bicapped square antiprism coordination arrangements. In addition, the fluorescence properties of the ligand and the Zn II -Nd III coordination compound were investigated.
