This study mainly focused on the water quality variability and distribution of micro-zooplankton (MZP) along the coastal waters of Tamil Nadu. Dendrogram analysis using water quality data categorized the study area into three regions: North (Chennai), Central (Puducherry), and South (Karaikal). The MZP consists of 40 ciliates and 8 dinoflagellates, with spirotrichea (52.4 %) significantly dominant, followed by dinophyceae (21.1 %), phyllopharyngea (14.7 %), and others (11.8 %). Paracyrtophoron tropicum, a new report in the coastal waters of India, was identified by comparing its molecular phylogeny (18S rRNA accession no: MT500569) to previously reported species. Statistical analysis revealed a positive correlation between P. tropicum abundance and water temperature, PO 4 , SiO 4 , TP, Chl-a, and Trichodesmium erythraeum, suggesting that they might not directly control the growth of P. tropicum but indirectly influence it via food availability, i.e., T. erythraeum. Various biotic and abiotic factors regulate carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) absorption and emission in coastal waters. Factors controlling the regional air-sea CO 2 fluxes were studied in Tuticorin Bay, a highly urbanized region along the southeast coast of India. Significant spatial heterogeneity in the distribution of inorganic carbon components in the bay was observed based on the exposure to different anthropogenic pressures. Thermal effluent discharges made the south zone of the bay a strong CO 2 source by enhancing heterotrophy. Untreated sewage discharges in the middle zone mediated eutrophic conditions leading to strong autotrophy and restricting the zone as a weak source of CO 2. Irrespective of the anthropogenic stressors, biological processes dominated the air-sea CO 2 fluxes in the Tuticorin Bay. Biogeochemical and ecological responses to limited external nutrient loading are poorly understood in tropical semi-enclosed coastal lagoons which are highly influenced by hydrological and salinity regimes. With objectives towards ecosystem sustainability via better management of the nutrient inputs, investigations were carried out to estimate the water, salt, and nutrient budget of "Pulicat" hypersaline coastal lagoon for the year 2018-2019. The budget revealed that the annual rate of precipitation and evaporation are the major driving factors regulating the annual residual flow in the lagoon. Limited exchange of water and material had resulted in a hypersaline condition with high spatial and temporal variation in salinity ranging from 20 to 103. In the absence of external loading, nutrient enrichment by internal compensation had resulted in DIN enrichment. DIN constituents are mainly contributed by ammonia, indicative of remineralisation through benthic regeneration. The extended water residence time and enhanced primary production has converted the inner lagoon into a limited phosphate system. The TRIX index also indicates a decline in the trophic status transforming the lagoon from a mesotrophic to a eutrophic system., (© 2021. The influence of distinct tidal characteristics and nutrient status on mesozooplankton community was studied in six major estuaries along the west coast of India during the late-monsoon (MS) and post-monsoon (PM) periods. The macro-tidal estuaries in the north (Amba and Thane) exhibited higher nutrient concentration compared to the micro- and meso-tidal estuaries located in the south (Cochin and Nethravati) and central (Zuari and Mandovi) west coast of India. The markedly higher nitrate and phosphate levels in the macro-tidal estuaries during PM indicated anthropogenic contributions from domestic and industrial effluents, which significantly impacted the mesozooplankton community structure. Nutrient enrichments favored higher phytoplankton standing stock leading to low DO levels. In the micro- and meso-tidal estuaries, meso- and euryhaline copepods dominated whereas in the macro-tidal estuaries, the copepod community was dominated by euryhaline and coastal species. Furthermore, the high-saline eutrophic environment of macro-tidal estuaries formed congenial for the increased jellyfish preponderance during PM. The predation pressure exerted by the jellyfish population on the crustacean zooplankton and ichthyoplankton exerted an adverse impact on the potential fishery stock in the macro-tidal estuaries. Thus, the study reveals that the nutrient enrichment favoring a shift in the mesozooplankton community structure from nutritionally superior crustacean plankton to less desirable jellyfishes, which in turn, may lead to a threat on the estuarine pelagic energy transfer and ecosystem deliverables., (© 2021. The 26th December 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami devastated coastal regions of the Indian subcontinent. Andaman and Nicobar Islands, coastal stretches of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala were the most affected regions of India. Changes in the beach profiles, long shore currents, breaking wave characteristics in the surf zone at selected locations along the Tamil Nadu coast were studied during January, April, October 2005 and January 2006. Long shore sediment transport rates were estimated from the observed parameters. Studies were carried out earlier (1995-1996 and 1998) to understand the coastal environment over a one-year cycle in the study region. The post-tsunami observations were compared with the earlier studies to establish the variations in the littoral environment and to ascertain the normalcy of the littoral environment in the post-tsunami scenario. From the changes in the beach profiles, the shoreline was observed to recede by about 20 m and built-up of backshore by about 0.5 m at most locations. Observations from the field investigations and comparisons with earlier studies along this stretch of the coastline indicate that the coastline is yet to return completely to normalcy.
