There is evidence of the impact of school segregation on students' academic achievement, but it is debated whether the extent of this impact is dependent on students' socioeconomic status, or on their native or non-native condition. This research addresses the problem in Spain, seeking to determine how immigrant and socioeconomic segregation affect the academic achievement of native and non-native students. With this aim, the PISA study database was specially exploited by means of two-tier Multilevel Models, estimating school segregation through the Hutchens Square Root Index. Specifically, the study estimates the influence of school segregation on students' academic achievement in the subjects of Mathematics, Language and Science. The results confirm that school socioeconomical and immigrant segregation affect students' academic achievement differently. Whereas socioeconomic segregation negatively affects both groups in all three subjects, immigrant segregation affects non-native students more strongly. Thus, data shows school segregation on socioeconomic grounds is always significant, and always has a considerable impact on achievement, regardless of students' national origin. School segregation reproduces and accentuates conditions of social injustice. To counter its harmful effects, it is necessary to act first and foremost on socioeconomic segregation, as this causes the most devastating effects in education, particularly for non-native students.

This article is a tribute to Kadir Beycioglu, a Turkish academic who passed away prematurely in August 2021 due to a terrible illness. His death was met with a deep shock and great sadness by all who knew him. The different sections of this article summarise his influential work in the field of educational leadership and social justice and invite the reader to take a brief journey through his relentless struggle to improve the rights of children and youth, both in his home country and abroad. The text discusses the pillars underpinning social justice and the steps to be taken for its implementation in schools. The article relies on the principle that every child's dream matters, emphasising the need to eradicate the scourge of segregation and exclusion from schools to which Kadir so often referred in his work. The conclusion reflects on the evolution that social justice leadership has taken so far and looks to the future by considering the emergence of networking as a useful ally at the service of education for social justice, which is making a true difference on the road to a more socially just school.

We present the results of an international research that intends to identify key factors associated with school and classroom socio-emotional achievement of Primary Education Students in Latin America countries. This Multilevel Study has been conducted with 4 analysis levels; we studied 5,603 students from 248 classrooms from 98 schools in 9 countries. We worked with 4 product socio-affective variables (self-concept, academic behaviour, social interaction and satisfaction with the school). The results showed a series of classroom and school factors that explain the socio-emotional development, consistent with those found in research on school effectiveness to cognitive factors. Se presentan los resultados de una investigación internacional que pretende identificar los factores de escuela y de aula asociados al logro socio-afectivo de los estudiantes de Educación Primaria en Iberoamérica. Se realizó un estudio Multinivel con 4 niveles de análisis, se analizaron 5.603 alumnos de 248 aulas correspondientes a 98 escuelas de 9 países. Se trabajó con cuatro variables de producto socio-afectivo (Autoconcepto, Comportamiento académico, Convivencia social y Satisfacción con la escuela). Los resultados arrojaron una serie de factores de aula y escuela que explican el desarrollo socio-afectivo, coherentes con los hallados en la investigación sobre eficacia escolar con factores cognitivos.

This paper explores teachers' habits (1) in terms of setting homework for their students and (2) in terms of building on homework in the classroom. Based on data collected in UNESCO's Second Regional Comparative and Explanatory Study (SERCE), the sample size of this analysis is about 200,000 Primary Grade 3 and 6 students in 16 Latin American countries. SERCE applied standardised achievement tests and context questionnaires to these students, their families, teachers and principals of the schools involved. Choosing four aspects (student, classroom, school and country) for their multilevel study and focusing on two subjects (Mathematics and Language), the authors of this paper investigated the relationship between homework and students' academic achievement. The results of their analysis show that the majority of Latin American teachers set homework in all or almost all classes. Ninety per cent of the teachers estimated that it took their students between 15 and 30 minutes to complete their homework. Follow-up figures in terms of checking and correcting homework were somewhat lower, as was the number of teachers who actually built on homework in teaching sessions. This study highlights the importance of following up on the contents covered in homework in the classroom to maximise effective learning.

The purpose of this investigation is to determine the incidence of school infrastructure and resources and its impact on the academic performance of primary education students in Latin America. A 4-level multilevel model was applied to the data of the Second Regional Comparative and Explanatory Study (SERCE) conducted by UNESCO, which researched 180,000 students in the 3rd and 6th grades of primary education at 3,000 schools from 15 countries in Latin America. Results show that the availability of basic infrastructure and services (water, electricity, sewage), didactic facilities (sport installations, labs, libraries), as well as the number of books in the library and computers in the school do have an effect on the achievement of primary education students in Latin America, but their relative weight varies significantly from country to country. These results indicate the need to continue investment in resources and facilities and to incorporate this factor into school effectiveness models that are meant to become universal. This research seeks to estimate the magnitude of school segregation by socioeconomic level in Mexico's elementary and secondary schools. For this purpose, microdata from Mexico's National Plan for Learning Assessment (Planea) in 2017 and 2018 has been used. The estimation of segregation was based on dissimilarity indexes, Gorard’s segregation index, Hutchens' square root index, and the isolation index. The results, consistent with international research, show high segregation for Mexico as a whole, to a greater degree among students from families with fewer resources, and among secondary students in comparison with elementary school students. In addition, major differences were found among states, with Chiapas and Oaxaca showing high segregation, and Estado de Mexico and Tlaxcala, low segregation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research aims to determine the contribution of private schools to socioeconomic school segregation in Peru and its departments. A microdata mining is carried out of the National Student Assessment for the 2nd year of Secondary School, in such a way that it works with 631 013 Secondary School students, distributed in 17 310 educational services in the 25 departments. A greater segregation was found in the group of students with fewer resources, in terms of private school; while for those with greater resources, segregation is greater in public schools, although this segregation is considerably less.
