11. Prohexadione calcium applications increase peanut peg strength.

Abstract

Prohexadione calcium is a growth regulator, which manages excessive vine growth in peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) by reducing shoot internode length. To test the effect of prohexadione calcium on peanut, a field experiment was conducted at the West Florida Research and Education Center in Jay, FL, during 2021 and 2022. The objective was to determine peanut response at different rates (untreated control, 70, 105, 140, and 175 g a.i. ha−1 of prohexadione calcium). Data were collected on yield, peg strength, above‐ and belowground biomass, plant height, and total sound mature kernels. Additionally, return on investment for prohexadione calcium application was also calculated. Prohexadione calcium application resulted in significant reduction of peanut plant height. The application rate of 105 g a.i. ha−1 resulted in significantly greater normalized difference vegetation index as compared to untreated control. Belowground, aboveground, and total biomass did not significantly differ between the 140 g a.i. ha−1 rate and untreated control. However, peanut peg strength increased significantly at the 140 g a.i. ha−1 treatment compared to the untreated control. Peanut yield ranged from 6.65 to 7.15 Mg ha−1 among different treatments; however, the differences among treatments were not significant. Similarly, the total sound mature kernels and return on investment did not differ significantly under different prohexadione calcium treatments. Considering that peanut response to prohexadione calcium is difficult to observe in small plots, it is important to test the effect of prohexadione calcium on peanut production under on‐farm large plot conditions. 12. Nitrogen credits after peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.).

Abstract

State‐level cooperative extension services provide fertilizer recommendations for row crops in the United States. Of these, nitrogen (N) recommendations are arguably the most important because N is the most common yield‐limiting nutrient in nonlegume crop production systems. Throughout the peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) growing region of the United States, Cooperative Extension Services generally recommends 22–67 kg N/ha credit to crops following peanut, likely due to the assumption that peanut, being a legume, contributes N to the following crop. The body of peer‐reviewed literature indicates that N credits from peanut to the subsequent crop are negligible. Recent literature indicates that apparent differences in yield following peanut compared to a nonlegume are a result of nonlegume crop residue favoring N immobilization rather than N mineralization from peanut residue. Taken together, recent research corroborates the few previous scientific publications addressing the issue, namely, that cooperative extension service recommendations to reduce N fertilization to crops after peanut are not supported by the peer‐reviewed literature. Future field research should include summer fallows to determine if yield differences between legumes and nonlegumes are due to N credits by the legume or N immobilization by nonlegumes. Data on N loss pathways following peanut are needed to identify management strategies that can mitigate N losses after peanut harvest. In conclusion, the preponderance of peer‐reviewed science does not support current Extension recommendations regarding peanut N credits to the following crop. 13. Soybean response to high‐speed planting in Mississippi.

Abstract

Mississippi soybean [Glycine max (L.) Mer.] producers are under pressure to plant as much land as possible within narrow planting windows. The 5‐year average planting progress is 45% of the total at the end of the optimal soybean planting window. New metering and seed delivery technology claims faster planting without sacrificing singulation, stand, or yield, but these tools need to be validated before recommendation. This study aimed to quantify soybean response to planting speeds using a precision planter (John Deere MaxEmerge 2 row units retrofitted with Ag Leader SureSpeed and SureForce) and a mechanical planter (John Deere 1700 ground‐driven mechanical planter equipped with eSet meters) for a total of 7 site‐years across Mississippi. In 2022, both planters were evaluated at four actual ground speeds of 7.9, 10.8, 13.5, and 16.4 km h−1 in a 2 × 4 factorial design. The experimental design was modified in 2023, where the mechanical planter served as the current farmer practice check at 9.7 km h−1and the precision planter speeds were 9.7, 14.5, and 17.7 km h−1 at research station sites and 9.7 and 14.5 km h−1 at an on‐farm site. Across sites, increased planting speed generally increased plant spacing, in‐row spacing variability, and decreased plant population. However, increased speed did not affect soybean yield. The precision planter at 17.7 km h−1 was no different from the mechanical planter in terms of soybean plant population, spacing, and yield in 2023. Results suggest soybean producers can plant soybean at 17.7 km h−1 without compromising yield. 14. Discussion Groups and Multi-Formatted Content Delivery in an Online Module: Effect on Students' Self-Efficacy

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of theoretically-guided, instructional design strategies in an online learning module that was implemented in four undergraduate sport management and recreation courses. The study was framed within Social Cognitive Theory, a well-studied model for adult learning, and several instructional design hypotheses were examined. Using an experimental research design, the effects of online discussion groups and multiple formats on students' self-efficacy perceptions in an online learning module were examined. Results of the analyses indicated that the use of discussion groups produced significantly higher self-efficacy perceptions compared to the other instructional design strategies. Findings from the study are discussed.

Abstract

Best management practices that optimize agronomic performance and make Brassica carinata production compatible with existing cropping systems are crucial for the establishment of a carinata supply chain in the southeastern United States. To this end, research was carried out to quantify land preparation method (conventional, no-till, broadcast-disc, and ripper-roller) and seeding rate effects on (1.12, 5.60, 10.09, and 14.57 kg seed ha−1) on B. carinata physiology, yield, and seed chemical composition. Data were collected on days to 50% flowering; canopy cover; gaseous exchange parameters (leaf net photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, transpiration, intercellular CO2, and water use efficiency); leaf area index; root weight; shoot weight; aboveground biomass; yield; and seed chemical composition. Leaf net photosynthesis was affected by land preparation treatment, being greater under the ripper-roller treatment, particularly during bolting. On the other hand, a decrease in photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, and water use efficiency was observed as seeding rate increased, especially during bolting. Carinata seed under the ripper-roller land preparation had the greatest oil content but lowest glucosinolates and protein contents. Yield did not respond to land preparation. Yield was minimized (732 kg seed ha−1) at the 1.12 kg ha−1 seeding rate and maximized (1087 kg seed ha−1) at the 5.6 kg ha−1 seeding rate. No land preparation by seeding rate interaction was observed for gas exchange parameters and LAI during any of the growth stages, nor was any interaction observed for yield. 14 páginas.- 6 figuras.- 53 referencias, Understanding the chemical composition of our planet's crust was one of the biggest questions of the 20th century. More than 100 years later, we are still far from understanding the global patterns in the bioavailability and spatial coupling of elements in topsoils worldwide, despite their importance for the productivity and functioning of terrestrial ecosystems. Here, we measured the bioavailability and coupling of thirteen macro- and micronutrients and phytotoxic elements in topsoils (3–8 cm) from a range of terrestrial ecosystems across all continents (∼10,000 observations) and in response to global change manipulations (∼5,000 observations). For this, we incubated between 1 and 4 pairs of anionic and cationic exchange membranes per site for a mean period of 53 days. The most bioavailable elements (Ca, Mg, and K) were also amongst the most abundant in the crust. Patterns of bioavailability were biome-dependent and controlled by soil properties such as pH, organic matter content and texture, plant cover, and climate. However, global change simulations resulted in important alterations in the bioavailability of elements. Elements were highly coupled, and coupling was predictable by the atomic properties of elements, particularly mass, mass to charge ratio, and second ionization energy. Deviations from the predictable coupling-atomic mass relationship were attributed to global change and agriculture. Abstract

Understanding the chemical composition of our planet's crust was one of the biggest questions of the 20th century. More than 100 years later, we are still far from understanding the global patterns in the bioavailability and spatial coupling of elements in topsoils worldwide, despite their importance for the productivity and functioning of terrestrial ecosystems. Here, we measured the bioavailability and coupling of thirteen macro‐ and micronutrients and phytotoxic elements in topsoils (3–8 cm) from a range of terrestrial ecosystems across all continents (∼10,000 observations) and in response to global change manipulations (∼5,000 observations). For this, we incubated between 1 and 4 pairs of anionic and cationic exchange membranes per site for a mean period of 53 days. The most bioavailable elements (Ca, Mg, and K) were also amongst the most abundant in the crust. Patterns of bioavailability were biome‐dependent and controlled by soil properties such as pH, organic matter content and texture, plant cover, and climate. However, global change simulations resulted in important alterations in the bioavailability of elements. Elements were highly coupled, and coupling was predictable by the atomic properties of elements, particularly mass, mass to charge ratio, and second ionization energy. Deviations from the predictable coupling‐atomic mass relationship were attributed to global change and agriculture. Our work illustrates the tight links between the bioavailability and coupling of topsoil elements and environmental context, human activities, and atomic properties of elements, thus deeply enhancing our integrated understanding of the biogeochemical connections that underlie the productivity and functioning of terrestrial ecosystems in a changing world.

Abstract

As a recently introduced crop in the United States, there are limited data regarding temporal nutrient accumulation and partitioning dynamics of Brassica carinata(carinata). A four site‐year study was conducted in Jay, FL and Salisbury, NC during the 2018–2019 and 2019–2020 growing seasons. Three carinata genotypes (DH‐157.715, M‐01, and Avanza 641) proposed by the industry to represent early‐, mid‐, and full‐season genotypes, respectively, were sampled at multiple growth stages and partitioned into leaves, stems, reproductive parts (flowers plus pods), and seed to determine biomass and nutrient accumulation across three genotypes in Florida and one full season genotype in North Carolina. Averaged over two site‐years and genotypes in Florida, accumulation (per ha) of 169 kg N, 22 kg P, 160 kg K, 58 kg S, 475 g Zn, and 218 g B was required to produce 1635 and 10,872 kg ha−1of seed yield and biomass, respectively. Nutrients with high harvest index values included P (60%), N (55%), S (32%), and Mg (29%). Averaged over two site‐years in North Carolina, accumulation (per ha) of 178 kg N, 26 kg P, 87 kg K, 24 kg S, 416 g Zn, and 127 g B produced 2428 and 9102 kg ha−1of seed yield and biomass, respectively. Nutrients with greatest harvest index values were P (57%), N (50%), S (32%), and Mg (26%). Internal efficiency of N, P, and K, measured as slopes of seed yield regressions over nutrient uptake across all genotypes and locations were 16, 83, and 8 kg seed yield per kg N, P, and K uptake, respectively. These results describe temporal nutrient accumulation and partitioning in carinata and are critical to refine nutrient management strategies and guide fertilizer application decisions. Nutrient acquisition for Brassica carinataas a winter crop was most rapid between pre‐bolting and flowering growth stage.Time and rate of nutrient acquisition varied among nutrients.Carinata genotypes with proposed variable maturity exhibited similar nutrient accumulation and partitioning.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the role between family-friendly employee benefits programs (FFEBPs) and organizational commitment and employee motivation (self-efficacy) among a sector of municipal employees. In particular, the effects of two FFEBPs (leave programs/time off programs and work-stress family programs) were assessed on organizational commitment and job self-efficacy outcomes. Three hundred forty-seven local government professionals completed an online survey that was used to measure the variables of interest. Results found significant mean differences of employees' job self-efficacy and organizational commitment levels between agencies with work-family stress management FFEBPs and agencies without these programs. However, the effects of leave programs/time off FFEBPs were not significant predictors of an employee's job self-efficacy.
