Mulching is one of the best management practices used in soil and water conservation studies. The aim of this study is to determine the effects of different mulch types and doses on runoff coefficient (Rc), soil loss (Er), sediment concentration (Sc), time to ponding (tp), runoff generation time (tr), percolated (pw) and retained (rw) water and total losses of nitrate‐nitrogen (NO3−), ammonium‐nitrogen (NH4+), total nitrogen (TN), phosphate‐phosphorus (PO43−), and total organic carbon (TOC) under simulated rainfall in the laboratory. Three different mulch materials (dry weed, peanut hay, and wheat straw) were applied at four different doses (0, 2, 4, and 6 t/ha) on the experimental plots. A simulated rainfall intensity of 97 mm/s was applied for an hour. All mulch types and doses reduced Rc, and the most effective reduction was found in 2 t/ha dry weed mulch applied plots. The most effective application for reducing soil loss was 6 t/ha peanut hay mulch. The most effective application for delaying the ponding time and runoff generation time was the 4 t/ha application of wheat straw mulch. The highest pw and rw were found in 6 t/ha and 4 t/ha doses of dry weed mulch applications, respectively. The most effective application for reducing NH4+ losses was found in 4 t/ha wheat straw application plots. The most effective mulch type and dose for reducing NO3− loss was 6 t/ha of dry weed mulch. The lowest TN loss was found in the plots where 6 t/ha of peanut hay mulch was applied. In terms of PO43− losses, the lowest loss was in 6 t/ha of dry weed mulch plots. The lowest TOC loss was at 4 t/ha of straw mulch applications. Mulching can be a good natural‐based solution for reducing soil, water, and nutrient loss. An open field experiment from November 2022 to May 2023 in Croatia, which is characterized by a continental humid climate, evaluated nonwoven mulches made from viscose, jute, and hemp fibres blended with PLA fibres. The blends of viscose and jute fibres (90:10, 80:20, and 70:30 ratios) were produced using mechanical web formation on cards with needle punching for bonding webs. Additionally, hemp fibres were blended with PLA fibres in a ratio of 80:20. Winter conditions caused significant structural changes in the mulches, including shrinkage, increased mass per unit area, thickness, and reduced air permeability. The amount of PLA fibre in the nonwoven mulch blends significantly affected nonwoven fabric structure change during exposure to winter conditions. After 180 days, the breaking force of all mulches increased by 30% to 277%. The soil beneath jute and hemp mulches maintained higher temperatures and moisture levels compared to viscose mulches. Soil organic carbon content varied with fibre type and was higher under jute and hemp mulches. K2O content was significantly higher in soils covered by mulches. All mulches effectively suppressed weeds. The experiment results showed that the newly produced nonwoven mulches could replace the conventional agro foil. Results also suggest that choosing biodegradable nonwoven mulches produced from fibres obtained from natural and renewable sources can influence soil fertility and the availability of nutrients, ultimately affecting plant growth and agricultural productivity. Bio-based polymers are a promising material with which to tackle the use of disposable and non-degradable plastics in agriculture, such as mulching films. However, their poor mechanical properties and the high cost of biomaterials have hindered their widespread application. Hence, in this study, we improved polysaccharide-based films and enriched them with plant nutrients to make them suitable for mulching and fertilizing. Films were produced combining sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), chitosan (CS), and sodium alginate (SA) at different weight ratios with glycerol and CaCl2 as a plasticizer and crosslinker, respectively, and enriched with ammonium phosphate monobasic (NH4H2PO4). A polysaccharide weight ratio of 1:1 generated a film with a more crosslinked structure and a lower expanded network than that featuring the 17:3 ratio, whereas CaCl2 increased the films' water resistance, thermal stability, and strength characteristics, slowing the release rates of NH4+ and PO43−. The problem of white pollution caused by waste agricultural mulch film (WAMF) has a long history and has brought great damage to the soil and ecological environment. The recycled WAMF has no processing performance because it is doped with a large amount of cotton straw and soil inorganic particles. In this study, it was reported for the first time that high‐quality and efficient recovery of WAMF was carried out by means of solid‐state shear milling (S3M) technology. After the pretreatment of S3M, the recycled WAMF is transformed into an active composite powder with a particle size of microns, which regains certain processing performance. Then we prepared a composite material similar to WPC (wood‐plastic composite) by using the composite powder. It was found that under the action of strong three‐dimensional shear force, the phase domain size of the composite decreased significantly, and the compatibility of each component improved. The macroscopic performance was that the tensile strength was increased by 65% and the bending strength was increased by 74%, reaching 8.30 and 17 MPa, respectively. The 24‐h water absorption of this composite decreased by 13%. More importantly, the thermal stability was not significantly reduced during the milling process. This process does not require sorting, cleaning, or other operations, which can greatly simplify the process flow and improve recovery efficiency. Background: Pigeonpea is second most important pulse crop grown after chickpea in India. Pigeonpea is versatile crop can be grown in vast agro climatic condition with low inputs. However, the yield is very low as compared to the potential yield as grown in rainfed condition, the drip fertigation and mulching can increase resource use efficiency. Both these techniques are resource saving and realized maximum yield by reducing the nutrient and water losses as compared to conventional practices. Methods: The experiment was laid out in factorial complete randomized block design and replicated thrice. The experiment consisted of two levels of irrigation (0.50 CPE and 0.75 CPE) as one factor and three fertility levels (100% RDF, 75% RDF and 50% RDF) as second factor and two levels of mulching (without mulching and with plastic mulching 25 micron) as third factor. Result: The results revealed that higher level of irrigation (0.75 CPE) with 100 per cent RDF and with plastic mulching recorded significantly higher growth rate, seed yield and uptake of nutrients by the pigeonpea crop. Recruitment failures of Serianthes nelsonii are among the threats to this species' recovery, yet adaptive management research to understand the causes of seedling mortality is lacking. Insufficient available light in the in situ forest floor is one factor that may be involved, and below-plant reflection of incident light may improve seedling survival. Mirrors were placed beneath S. nelsonii, Serianthes grandiflora, and Serianthes kanehirae seedlings in container nursery conditions and S. grandiflora seedlings in a closed-canopy forest to determine the influence of the additional reflected light on seedling survival and growth. Below-plant mirrors increased nursery seedling survival for S. nelsonii and S. kanehirae, with 75% combined survival without mirrors and 88% combined survival with mirrors. Below-plant mirrors increased stem height by 51% for the three species, with greater stem diameter and ending leaf number also occurring for plants with mirrors. Below-plant mirrors increased S. grandiflora seedling survival to 161% and longevity to 236% compared to plants without mirrors under forest cover. The plants receiving mirrors also increased by 175% in height, 60% in stem diameter, and 117% in leaf number compared to the plants without mirrors. These findings indicate that passive solar engineering by exploiting below-plant light reflection may be used as a Serianthes conservation protocol to improve seedling survival and growth under shaded conditions. Soybean film mulching has shown promise in maintaining consistent and high yields in semi‐arid regions. However, the specific impacts of full‐film and semi‐film mulching on soybean growth, root nodule traits and grain yield are poorly understood. This 2‐year study (2021–2022) investigates the effects of full‐film and semi‐film mulching on soil moisture, soybean growth and yield. Our findings revealed that semi‐film mulching increased soybean yield by 18.12% compared to full‐film mulching, averaged across 2 years. Furthermore, the semi‐film treatment significantly enhanced biological nitrogen fixation ability, increasing root nodule numbers by 24.81%–33.43%, compared to full‐film mulching. This improvement also positively affected soybean quality, with crude protein content increasing by 5.89% in 2021 and 4.14% in 2022 compared to full‐filming. Moreover, semi‐film mulching helped maintain soil moisture and temperature during later soybean growth stages. There findings suggest that semi‐film mulching is a viable agricultural strategy for soybean cultivation in semi‐arid regions, improving soybean quality and efficiency while promoting environmental sustainability. Innovative practices like combining agroforestry with organic mulch can store carbon and enhance crop yields by regulating soil temperature, improving soil health and moisture. A study was conducted during 2022–23 in the mid-hills of the North-western Himalayas to evaluate the productivity of turmeric plants grown under different densities of Melia composita Willd. The research employed a split-plot design, utilizing different tree spacings (main plot)—8m × 5m (S1) and 8m × 4m (S2) of Melia composita trees and sole cropping, along with one control (T1) and nine distinct mulch treatments (sub-plots): T2 (Farm yard manure (FYM)), T3 (Toona ciliata + FYM + Recommended dose of fertilizer (RDF)), T4 (Artemis vulgaris + FYM + RDF), T5 (Ulmus villosa + FYM + RDF), T6 (Celtis australis + FYM + RDF), T7 (Pinus roxburghii + FYM + RDF), T8 (Pistacia integrimma + FYM + RDF), T9 (Phyllostachys aurea + FYM + RDF), T10 (Melia composita + FYM + RDF). The results showed that higher biomass (301.54 Mg ha−1) and carbon density (143.24 Mg ha−1) were achieved with S2 tree spacing than S1. However, for better turmeric growth and yield, S1 tree spacing performed better. Among the different mulch treatments, T6 produced the highest curcumin percentage, primary finger count, and mother rhizome weight. On the other hand, T10 resulted in the highest primary finger weight and total yield. Using T3 mulch enhanced the level of available N, P, K in soil and mulch used in T9 improved the soil microbial characteristics. Turmeric intercropped with M. composita in 8m × 5m (S1) and 8m × 4m (S2) spacing resulted in net returns of $7948.44 ha−1 and $7456.64 ha−1 year−1, respectively, which were 23.74% and 16.07% increase compared to sole cropping (S3). This research provides valuable insights into optimizing tree spacing and mulch materials in an agroforestry system based on M. composita, which enhances turmeric crop productivity, soil health and economic viability. The combination of no-till farming and green manure is key to nourishing the soil and increasing crop yields. However, it remains unclear how to enhance the efficiency of green manure under no-till conditions. We conducted a two-factor field trial of silage maize rotated with hairy vetch to test the effects of tillage methods and returning. Factor 1 is the type of tillage, which is divided into conventional ploughing and no-tillage; factor 2 is the different ways of returning hairy vetch as green manure, which were also compared: no return (NM), stubble return (H), mulching (HM), turnover (HR, for CT only), and live coverage (LM, for NT only). Our findings indicate that different methods of returning hairy vetch to the field will improve maize yield and quality. The best results were obtained in CT and NT in HM and LM, respectively. Specifically, HM resulted in the highest dry matter quality and yield, with improvements of 35.4% and 31.9% over NM under CT, respectively. It also demonstrated the best economic and net energy performance. However, other treatments had no significant effect on the beneficial utilization and return of nutrients. The LM improved yields under NT by boosting soil enzyme activity, promoting nitrogen transformation and accumulation, and increasing nitrogen use efficiency for better kernel development. Overall, NTLM is best at utilizing and distributing soil nutrients and increasing silage maize yield. Trees in degraded forest areas are generally exposed to water stress due to harsh environmental conditions, threatening their survival. This study simulated the environmental conditions of a degraded forest area by constructing an artificial rainfall slope and observing the physiological responses of Pinus densiflora to control, mulching, and waterbag treatments. P. densiflora exhibited distinct isohydric plant characteristics of reducing net photosynthetic rate and stomatal transpiration rate through regulating stomatal conductance in response to decreased soil moisture, particularly in the control and waterbag treatments. Additionally, the trees increased photochemical quenching, such as Y(NPQ), to dissipate excess energy as heat and minimize damage to the photosynthetic apparatus. However, these adaptive mechanisms have temporal limitations, necessitating appropriate measures. Under extreme drought stress (DS45), mulching treatment showed 4.5 times and 2.2 times higher in PIabs and SFIabs than in the control, and after the recovery period (R30), waterbag and mulching treatment showed similar levels, while PIabs and SFIabs in the control were only 45% and 75% of those in the mulching and waterbag treatments, respectively. Specifically, mulching extended the physiological mechanisms supporting survival by more than a week, making it the most effective method for enhancing the planting ground in degraded forest areas. Although the waterbag treatment was less effective than mulching treatment, it still significantly contributed to forming better growth conditions compared to the control. These findings highlight the potential for mulching and waterbag treatments to enhance forest restoration efforts, suggesting future research and application could lead to more resilient reforested areas capable of withstanding climate change-induced drought conditions. A rotary tiller is a common tillage tool for straw incorporation in an intensive tillage system. However, rotary tillage for seedbed preparation in dense-straw mulching conditions experiences high torque and poor performance of straw incorporation. Nowadays, a great deal of studies have been focused on mimicking the morphological features of low-resistance animals to improve the performance of soil-engaging tools. Accordingly, the present study investigated the performance of three C-type rotary blades (i.e., conventional, serrated, and biomimetic) under three straw lengths (50, 100, and 150 mm) for incorporation of straw into the field using an in situ field tillage testing bench. Compared to the conventional and serrated blades, the biomimetic blade had lower straw displacement (decreased by an average of 50 mm and 7 mm, respectively), higher straw burying rate (increased by an average of 5.2% and 7.8%, respectively), better straw distribution (decreased by an average of 9.1% and 10.4% on the coefficient of variation, respectively), as well as lower torque and power (decreased by an average of 3.3 N·m and 4.4 N·m, respectively) under all straw lengths. The improved performance of the biomimetic blade could be attributed to the fact that its typical teeth configuration was designed by mimicking the smooth arc of the mole-rat's claw. Despite its significant thermal requirements, melon is a vegetable species that holds the potential for expanding the crop range in temperate climate regions. The selection of appropriate varieties and agronomic practices facilitates its cultivation in these regions. This experiment, employing a randomized block design, was conducted from 2019 to 2021, and this study evaluated the response of three melon varieties—'Seledyn F1', 'Melba', and 'Malaga F1' (factor I)—to various mulching materials (factor II): black polyethylene film (PE), black polypropylene nonwoven (PP), biodegradable film (Fbio), and giant miscanthus straw. Control plots were left unmulched. Melon seeds were sown on 15 April, and seedlings were transplanted on 31 May at a spacing of 100 × 80 cm. This study assessed yield, fruit number, individual fruit weight, and vertical and horizontal fruit diameters. Under optimal conditions, the varieties Seledyn F1 and Malaga F1 produced fruits with the highest individual mass. The application of synthetic mulches led to a two-fold increase in fruit yield compared to unmulched plots, with a 23.7% increase in fruit number. On average, the largest fruits were obtained with PE mulch. Melons grown on Fbio mulch yielded, on average, 40% less and produced 18.8% fewer fruits compared to those grown with PE mulch. Plastic mulch plays a crucial role in agricultural production in arid and semi-arid regions, positively impacting crop yields, salt suppression, and seedling protection. However, as the usage of plastic mulch extends over time, residue accumulation becomes a significant issue in these regions. To clarify the effects of plastic mulch residue on soil fungi, this study focused on three typical cotton-growing areas in Xinjiang. Using high-throughput sequencing technology, the study analyzed the changes in the fungal community structure and diversity in rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere soils across 27 cotton fields under three different levels of plastic mulch residue: 0–75 kg/ha, 75–150 kg/ha, and 150–225 kg/ha. The results indicated that Ascomycota and Basidiomycota were the dominant fungal phyla across all treatments. Increasing levels of plastic mulch residue reduced the fungal richness in the soil, with a greater effects observed on rhizosphere fungi compared to bulk soil fungi. The α-diversity of cotton rhizosphere fungi showed an increasing trend, followed by a decrease with increasing plastic mulch residue, in Aksu and Bazhou, peaking at 75–150 kg/ha. Conversely, in Changji, the α-diversity decreased with increasing plastic mulch residue. The α-diversity of non-rhizosphere fungi associated with cotton decreased with increasing plastic mulch residue. Plastic mulch residue significantly altered the soil fungal α-diversity and had a greater effects on rhizosphere fungi. Different levels of plastic mulch residue had varying effects on the β-diversity of rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere fungi, significantly influencing rhizosphere fungi in Aksu and Bazhou and non-rhizosphere fungi in Changji and Bazhou. Overall, different levels of plastic mulch residue exerted varying degrees of influence on the community composition and diversity of soil fungi associated with cotton, potentially reducing the fungal richness and altering the community structure with increasing residue levels. Mulching is a common method increasing crop yield and achieving out-of-season production; nevertheless, their removal poses a significant environmental danger. In this scenario, the use of biodegradable plastic mulches comes up as a solution to increase the sustainability of this practice, as they can be tilled in soil without risk for the environment. In this context, it is important to study the microbial response to this practice, considering their direct involvement in plastic biodegradation. This study evaluated the biodegradation of three commercial mulch residues: one conventional non-biodegradable mulch versus two biodegradable ones (white and black compostable Mater-Bi mulches). The experiment was conducted under three incubation temperatures (room temperature 20–25 °C, 30 °C, and 45 °C) for a 6-month trial using fallow agricultural soil. Soil without plastic mulch residues was used as a control. White mater-bi biodegradable mulch residues showed higher degradation rates up to 88.90% at 30 °C, and up to 69.15% at room temperature. Furthermore, incubation at 45 °C determines the absence of degradation for all types of mulch considered. Moreover, bacterial alpha diversity was primarily influenced by plastic type and temperature, while fungal populations were mainly affected by temperature. Beta diversity was impacted by all experimental variables. Predicted functional genes crucial for degrading complex substrates, including those encoding hydrolases, cutinases, cellobiosidases, and lipases, were derived from 16S rRNA gene sequencing data. Cluster analysis based on predicted enzyme-encoding gene abundance revealed two clusters, mainly linked to sampling time. Finally, core microbiome analysis identified dominant bacterial and fungal taxa in various soil-plastic ecosystems during degradation, pinpointing species potentially involved in plastic breakdown. The present study allows an assessment of how different temperatures affect the degradation of mulch residues in soil, providing important insights for different climatic growing zones. Phyllostachys praecox is a shallow-rooted bamboo that often encounters hypoxia conditions which could be induced by long-term organic material mulching or flooding. It is important to uncover the effect of mulching and flooding on soil nutrient, ammonia-oxidizing microbes, and bacterial diversity. We set up field pot experiments with three treatments (control, mulching, and flooding) under P. praecox. Mulching or flooding altered soil conditions significantly, and both increased ammonium-nitrogen (NH4+-N), total phosphorus (TP), available P (AP), and available potassium (AK) concentrations, and decreased oxygen (O2) concentrations over control. Flooding increased pH and decreased nitrate-nitrogen (NO3--N), while mulching decreased soil pH and NO3--N. As O2 content decreased, archaeal 16S rRNA, amoA gene copies of ammoniaoxidizing archaea (AOA) and ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) increased. Mulching and flooding decreased Shannon, ACE and Chao 1 diversity when compared with the control, and as the O2 contents decreased, bacterial diversity decreased. Redundancy Analysis revealed O2, NO3--N, AK, AP, and pH were the major factors driving bacterial community structure. Correlation Analysis showed AK and O2 contents were highly correlated with bacterial community structure. In addition, structural equation modeling indicated that O2 facilitated efficient soil N use mainly through soil pH, AK content, and bacterial diversity. Mulching or flooding exerted great effects on environment factor and bacterial community structure, which could be exploited to facilitate the regulation of soil O2 conditions for sustainable P. praecox production. Field mulching is an important technique for dryland crop cultivation in the Loess Plateau (LP) of China, which alleviates the local agricultural water shortage. However, under different precipitation and temperature conditions, the effects of mulching on moisture conservation and yield enhancement are not consistent. A meta‐analysis was conducted to assess the variations of mulching across various variables (mulching types, rainfall precipitation and annual average temperature) based on data from 203 peer‐reviewed publications, including 1466 yield and 991 water use efficiency data points. The results indicated that compared with no mulching (CK), plastic mulching (PM), straw mulching (SM), and dual plastic and straw mulching (SPM) significantly increased both yield and water use efficiency (WUE), with SPM demonstrating the most substantial yield improvement. Under conditions of low temperature (<7°C), PM significantly improved both crop yield and WUE. Similarly, when temperatures were below 7°C and rainfall ranged from 400 to 600 mm, SM also significantly enhanced yield and WUE. Compared with PM, SM does not enhance yield and WUE under high‐temperature low‐precipitation (>12°C, ≤400 mm) and low‐temperature high‐precipitation (≤7°C, >600 mm) conditions. SPM outperforms SM and PM in enhancing yield and WUE under diverse hydrothermal conditions. Furthermore, we conducted green development assessment using the DPSIR model, and after 20 years of development, we found that green development potential of SM and SPM is greater than that of PM. Overall, SPM not only enhances crop yield and WUE but also serves as an effective replacement for PM, thereby boosting crop production in dryland agriculture. To explore the effects of different irrigation approaches, mulching, and their interaction on greenhouse melon (Cucumis melo L.) production and water use, a field experiment was conducted in Northern China using four treatments: mulching drip irrigation (MDI), mulching furrow irrigation (MFI), drip irrigation (DI), and furrow irrigation (FI; CK). The plant biomass, yield, water consumption, and water use efficiency (WUE) of melons were measured at different growth stages. The results showed that mulching has significant positive impacts on the growth as well as the fruit yield of melons. However, the water use characteristics of the plant were more greatly determined by the various irrigation approaches, and there was a significant interaction between the irrigation approach and mulching for both the total water consumption and WUE of the greenhouse melon. Of these treatments, MDI resulted in the highest yield of 38.49 t/hm2, which was significantly higher than the yields obtained with DI (32.36 t·hm−2) and FI (CK, 30.34 t·hm−2). In addition, the water consumption under MDI was 45.80% lower than FI (CK), which resulted in the promotion of WUE under MDI. The WUE range of the greenhouse melon is as follows: MDI (334.77 kg·mm−1·hm−2) > DI (244.84 kg·mm−1·hm−2) > MFI (189.78 kg·mm−1·hm−2) > FI (CK; 142.94 kg·mm−1·hm−2). The findings of this study indicate that mulching can boost melon yield, and drip irrigation can limit water consumption. This study provides a reference point for policymakers, indicating that drip irrigation with plastic mulching could be a feasible adaptation strategy for increasing greenhouse melon production in Northern China, as well as other agriculture regions that suffer from water shortages. This field experiment was conducted in Chichu Kebele in the Dilla Zuria area from 2020 to 2023. The objective of the experiment was to determine the optimal mulching strategy for enhancing soil fertility and pineapple production by comparing three treatments (grass mulch, plastic mulch, and farmers' practices without any mulch) using a RCB (Randomized Complete Block) design. The study's findings showed that the treatments with plastic mulch had the greatest soil moisture content values (18.41%), while the treatments with no mulch had the lowest values (11.39%). Compared to mulched treatments, pineapple planted without mulch had the greatest bulk density values (1.43 g/cm3). Total nitrogen and organic carbon has increase by 34 and 25%, respectively due to plastic mulching. However, total nitrogen and organic carbon has increase by 43 and 37.5%, respectively due to grass mulching. Fruit length was larger by 42.7 and 33.2%, respectively due to plastic and grass mulch compared to the control. However, fruit girth was wider by 54.1 and 43.8%, respectively due to plastic and grass mulches compared to the control. The pineapple with the most fruit yield (71.39 t/ha), fruit length (17.4 cm), fruit girth (46.67 cm), and sucker number (15 pieces) was obtained using plastic mulching. However, pineapple grown without mulch had the lowest yield ever noted. Plastic mulch outperformed farmers' practices and grass mulching in terms of conserving soil moisture, which increased yield and yield characteristics. For the baseline, the marginal rate of return generated by the plastic and grass mulch treatments was 118.5 and 93.65%, respectively. Soil water conservation in dryland agriculture mainly depends on precipitation. We chose 35 long‐term experiments and analysed the data by using meta‐analysis to check how fallow management methods affect soil water storage of dryland winter wheat planting (SWS), precipitation storage efficiency (PSE), crop yield and water use efficiency (WUE). No‐tillage (NT), compared to conventional tillage (CT) in the fallow period, increased PSE, SWS, grain yield and WUE by 32.9%, 27.1%, 30.5% and 22.6%, respectively. Reduced tillage (RT) and subsoil tillage (ST) increased PSE by 15.2% and 11.7%, SWS by 17.4% and 15.0% and grain yield by 15.5 and 13.8%, respectively, but these had a non‐significant effect on WUE. The conservation tillage methods interacted significantly with the residue management and fallow mulching practices. Compared to CT, the conservation tillage methods with fallow mulching increased PSE, SWS, grain yield and WUE, but the growing of cover crops (designated as biological mulching) decreased PSE, SWS and grain yield by 17.3%, 13.0% and 32.0%, and had a non‐significant impact on WUE. Under the condition of straw mulching, NT increased PSE, SWS, grain yield and WUE by 43.7%, 38.1%, 40.6% and 42.9%, respectively, compared to CT. NT and RT increased the PSE, SWS and WUE, under normal mean annual precipitation (MAP), however, ST increased these observations under wet MAP, compared to CT. The effects of tillage methods varied with soil texture, and they were highly interrelated with water conservation, wheat yield and water use. We conclude that compared to conventional tillage, the conservation tillage methods increased soil water conservation during the fallow period, which increased wheat yield and water use. Moreover, NT with or without residue retention increased the fallow water conservation and wheat yield. This study was conducted at Sids Horticultural Research Farm. Beni-Suef Governorate in Egypt in the 2021, 2022, and 2023 seasons to assess the effectiveness of eight treatments on Flame seedless grapevine productivity and weed control. At harvest, chemical herbicidal residues in the berries were monitored using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) in a randomized complete block design with four replicates. The findings indicate that Roundup should be applied at 2.5 L/fed, Starane at 0.2 L/fed, black polyethylene mulch, and rice straw mulch. Additionally, Egyptian clover treatments provided 88.1–97.4% weed control. Furthermore, these treatments greatly enhanced grapevine growth and fruiting. The amount of herbicide residues was less than the maximum permitted limit. An analysis of the economics revealed that, growing grapevines with Egyptian clover, black plastic mulch, or rice straw mulch is a viable endeavor for producers. In order to increase groundnut productivity, a field experiment was carried out in the dry season of 2020 to assess the effectiveness of various mulching materials at suppressing weeds. The experimental treatments comprised of five mulching types; Control (no mulch), transparent polythene mulch, black polythene mulch, rice straw mulch and saw dust mulch) and three groundnut varieties (SAMNUT 23, SAMNUT 24 and SAMNUT 26). These were factorially combined and laid out in a Randomized complete block design with three replications. Findings revealed that mulching had a significant (p < 0.05) impact on crop qualities including canopy cover, chlorophyll content, pod yield, 100 kernel weight, and groundnut kernel yield as well as weed attributes like weed cover scores, weed density, weed dry weight, and weed control efficiency in both BUK and Wasai, respectively. The weed compositions were further grouped into various families comprising Poaceae (11), Euphorbiaceae (3), Amaranthaceae (4), Asteraceae (3), Cyperaceae (2), Cucurbitaceae, and Aizoaceae, each having one species with a different level of occurrence across the two locations. On the other hand, SAMNUT 26 significantly produced higher pod (2798 & 2119) and kernel yields (1198 & 1191), although SAMNUT 23 produced a heavier 100 kernel weight (55.51 & 54.52) at BUK and Wasai, respectively. In comparison to the other mulching types, applying black polythene mulch or transparent mulch lowered weed density and dry weight by limiting the amount of sunlight that the weeds got, preventing them from growing. Therefore, for dry season production of groundnut in the Sudan savannah ecology of Nigeria, mulching with black or transparent polythene film using the SAMNUT 26 variety was found to be effective in conserving soil moisture for optimum crop growth and development, while on the other hand, weed populations were suppressed. Purpose: The growing adverse effects of agrochemicals on environmental health and safety warrant an examination of ecologically safe alternatives for weed control. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of rice-husk waste on the growth performance and weed management (WM) of Ocimum sanctum. Method: In a randomized complete block design with three replications, nine weed management (WM) methods were assessed. These methods included black, red, and transparent polyethylene mulches; rice-husk; sawdust; hoe-weeding at 30 days after transplanting (DAT); a one-time application of 0.2 kg/ha Haloxyfop-P at 30 DAT; daily weeding; and no-weeding. Data were collected on weed parameters and growth attributes of Ocimum sanctum. All data were subjected to analysis of variance. Results: The use of rice-husk mulch resulted in the most significant (p< 0.05) increase in plant height (41.70 cm), leaf number (206.80), branch number (50.50), stem girth (2.76 cm), and leaf yield (7.15 t/ha) of Ocimum sanctum compared to the other weed control methods. It was comparable to black polyethylene (BP) in these traits except in leaf number where BP recorded a lower value (165.00). BP mulch was significantly more effective in weed suppression as it recorded the least number of broad leaves (0.00), sedges (0.00) weed biomass (0.00), and the highest weed control efficiency (WCE) (100%) at 10 WAT. The treatments ranked BP>Daily-weeding>Hoe-weeded>Rice-husk>Haloxyfop-PEHS>Redpolyethylene> Sawdust>Transparent-polyethylene>Control in WCE at 10 WAT. Conclusion: The study revealed that rice-husk mulch was the most effective in enhancing the growth and yield attributes of Ocimum sanctum, ranking fourth in weed control efficiency (WCE) at 72.60%, following black polyethylene (BP) mulch (100%), daily-weeding (96%) and hoe-weeded (95.7%). Several agricultural technologies have been promoted to intensify smallholder farming systems in Ghana, but there is limited literature on sustainability assessment of these technologies. A 2‐year (2017–2018) on‐farm study was conducted to evaluate the sustainability of using cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.] living mulch (CPLM) technology to intensify smallholder maize (Zea mays L.) production in northern Ghana. Four treatments (control, CPLM planted with maize on the same day, CPLM planted 1 week after maize, and CPLM planted 2 weeks after maize) were laid in RCBD with four replications per treatment. We used Sustainable Intensification Assessment Framework (SIAF) to assess the sustainability of the above treatments based on five domains (productivity, economic, environment, human, and social). We conducted the assessment in the following three steps: (1) measured selected indicators from the five SIAF domains, which were useful to answering research question; (2) converted measured values of the indicators into scores using a scale of 0–1; and (3) calculated sustainability index using geometric rules considering each SIAF domain as an edge of a pentagon. The sustainability indices for the CPLM increased by 143%–300% compared with the control treatment. The sustainability indices for the CPLM were >1, indicating better sustainability relative to the control treatment, which recorded sustainability index of <1. This suggests that smallholder farmers in northern Ghana and similar agroecologies can intercrop cowpea 1–2 weeks after planting maize as living mulch for better sustainability of their maize production and well‐being through its effect on yield, income, food security, nutrition, and gender equity. Introduction: The Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata) (CPB) is a major threat to potato crops in Europe, Asia, and America. In Europe, it is expected that climate change will cause the species to expand its range northwards and allow for an additional generation per year in regions where it is already established. The effectiveness of insecticides, a common method of control, is decreasing due to the emergence of resistance to several substances. Therefore, research into alternative measures is becoming increasingly necessary. One preventive measure that has already been shown to have great effects in past studies is the use of organic mulch. For organic mulching, conserved or freshly cut plant material is spread on the field usually when the potato emerges. Previous research has mainly used cereal straw for this purpose in plots that are relatively small compared to actual agricultural fields. Materials and methods: To address the lack of large-scale field trials in the literature, a series of on-station and on-farm field trials were conducted in this study. Organic, legume-rich mulches were used primarily, which so far have not been extensively investigated. Over a period of four years and in a total of six field trials, CPB and larval infestations were assessed. Results and discussion: Our results show effects on the initial infestation of young plants by adult CPB and on the emergence time of the first two larval stages. By the time of flowering, when the feeding effect of CPB on yield is known to be greatest, L3 and L4 larvae were reduced by about 30% in the on-station trials and by about 40% in the on-farm trials. In addition, when CPB larval stages were used to calculate a weighted daily leaf consumption per stage, total calculated leaf consumption was on average about 40% lower in the mulch treatments across all sampling dates and all trials. The recorded yields were equal or higher in the mulched treatments. In conclusion, organic mulching can effectively reduce CPB damage even on a large scale and can have a positive impact on yield. [Objective] The aims of this study are to investigate the historical and future trends of drought, precipitation, and the water requirement of major crops, to gain insights into the evolving characteristics of meteorological drought and the water balance for key crops in the loess hilly region of northern Shaanxi, and to provide the reference for implementing effective irrigation practices and optimizing crop cultivation in this region. [Method] The daily-scale basic meteorological data from the loess hilly region of northern Shaanxi for the period 1980 to 2017 were utilized. The Mann-Kendall method with pre-whitening and the R/S method were employed to analyze the trend changes in drought, precipitation and crop water requirement during the crop growing season (April to October) in past and future. [Results (1) Drought showed a decreasing trend from April to June and an increasing trend from July to October. The variation in effective precipitation exhibited different patterns across the months and regions, Crop water requirement showed an increasing trend from April to August. (2) In the future, the effective precipitation in May, July, and October is projected to decrease, while the effective precipitation in August and September will experience an increasing trend. Drought and crop water requirement in Yan' an will exhibit opposite trends from April to June compared to that in Yulin. [Conclusion] The frequent droughts occur, and the available precipitation is insufficient to meet crop water requirements in the Loess Plateau of northern Shaanxi. The measures to control the cultivation area of jujube and apples, to increase investment in millet cultivation, and to implement a combination of rainwater harvesting and mulching are suggested in order to meet crop water requirements, achieve higher yields and increase income. Truffles, belonging to the genus Tuber, are ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi that form underground ascocarps and primarily establish symbiosis with oaks and hazels. The cultivation of Tuber spp. involves transplanting inoculated seedlings that have formed ectomycorrhiza with Tuber species, with mulching being effective for truffle cultivation. In this study, we investigated the effects of mulching on the mycelial growth of four Tuber species (T. himalayense, T. koreanum, T. melanosporum, and T. borchii) in the Korean natural environment, highlighting the potential for Korea as a truffle cultivation site. We developed and tested species-specific primers for quantifying the soil mycelial biomass of Tuber spp. by qRT-PCR, determined the superior mulch color for mycelial growth, and identified the Tuber species exhibiting the highest growth rate in the Korean field environment. Our results demonstrated that white mulch significantly enhanced mycelial growth in Tuber species than black mulch, likely owing to its ability to maintain low soil temperatures, control weeds, and improve host plant growth. Among the Tuber species, T. himalayense showed the greatest growth potential in the Korean natural environment. Additionally, a significant and positive correlation was observed between the mycelial biomass of Tuber species and the growth of inoculated seedlings, as measured by the total stem length and the number of leaves, thereby indicating the importance of symbiosis between ECM fungi and host plants. This study provides valuable insights into truffle cultivation in Korea and highlights the potential of using white mulch to promote mycelial growth, thereby contributing essential data for understanding the appropriate environmental conditions for Tuber spp. cultivation in Korea. Abstract In winter, the paddy residues become wet during morning and late evening due to dew, which restricts the operation of sowing machines (Happy Seeder and Super Seeder) into paddy residues, as wet residues do not slide on furrow openers/tines. A PAU Smart Seeder (PSS) was developed and evaluated for a four-wheel tractor that can sow wheat with optimum crop establishment in combined harvested rice fields. The PSS were evaluated for its performance under varying straw load, forward speed, and rotor speed in terms of fuel consumption, field capacity, seed emergence, and grain yield. The crop establishment and wheat yield of PSS was also compared with the existing straw management machines Happy Seeder (HS) and Super Seeder (SS) under heavy paddy residue conditions. The effect of the straw load was more pronounced on dependent variables than the effect of the speed index. PSS performance was best at a forward speed of 2.6 km h−1, rotor speed of 127.5 rpm, and a straw load of 6 t ha−1. Average fuel consumption using PSS was lower than SS but higher than HS. Wheat emergence was higher by 15.6 and 25.7% on the PSS plots compared to HS and SS, respectively. Average wheat grain yield in PSS plots was significantly higher by 12.7 and 18.9% than SS and HS, respectively in one experiment, while the grain yield was similar for both PSS and HS in other experiments. PSS has a novel mechanism to manage paddy straw and simultaneously sow wheat into a heavy straw load (> 8 t ha−1) mixture of anchored and loose straw. In conclusion, PSS showed promise for in-situ management of rice straw as it eliminates most of the operational problems encountered by the existing seeders (HS and SS).

AbstractMulching leaves in place was studied for 4 years in Westchester County, New York State, USA. Soil testing showed an advantage in long-term mulch mowing for available water capacity and soil proteins with no detrimental effects on the health of the soil. There were no differences in the concentration of macro or micronutrients in the leaf and duff material between treatments or in the concentration of those nutrients being added or removed from the soil. Lawns that had been mulch mowed showed significantly higher pest and traffic tolerance than those where leaves had been removed. Drought stress tolerance remained the same on sites where mulch mowing had occurred, but decreased where leaves had been removed. Mowing practices accounted for less than one percent of the variation in tick numbers, indicating that other variables, not measured had a larger impact. The amount of fuel used for community pick-up of leaves was 4 and 33 times as much as mulch mowing for the two treatment groups. Based on the results of this 3-year study, mulch mowing of leaves provides some soil health benefits, many turf quality benefits, does not improve the habitat for pests and uses less fuel than community pick-up. This study showed that mulch mowing of leaves (i.e., leaving leaves on the lawn) does provide some benefits to soil health and turf quality, without having an adverse effect on nutrient load or tick habitat. Leguminous crop Tephrosia candida has high biomass production and contains a substantial quantity of nutrients within its biomass. Starting in 2019, a long-term study was done to find the best Tephrosia candida dose for mulching in guava orchards. The study had four treatments: T1 = 3.0 kg dry biomass m−2 of the plant basin, T2 = 2.0 kg, T3 = 1.0 kg, and T4 = control (no mulch). Every year, the treatments imposed in the month of August. The third year (2021–2022) results indicated that mulching with 3 kg of biomass m−2 increased trunk diameter, fruit yield, fruit weight, specific leaf area, total leaf chlorophyll, and leaf macro- and micro-nutrients. At 3.0 kg m−2, mulching improved soil properties such as EC, available nitrogen, available phosphorus, exchangeable potassium, DTPA extractable micronutrients (Fe, Zn, Cu, and Mn), total organic carbon (Ctoc), soil organic carbon (Csoc), organic carbon fractions, and microbial biomass carbon between 0–0.15 m and 0.15–0.30 m. There was an increasing trend in dehydrogenase activity (DHA) and fluorescein diacetate (FDA). The Tephrosia leaf litter exhibited decay constants of 1.27 year−1, and the carbon content was 40.11%. Therefore, applying Tephrosia biomass mulching at a rate of 3.0 kg m−2 is a viable long-term solution for enhancing soil fertility and sequestering carbon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study proceeded in the spring of 2022 to assess the efficiency of Metribuzin herbicide alone and combined with some agricultural methods, such as mulching and hoeing, to control potato weeds. The effect of Metribuzin at a rate of 400 g ha-1 with mulching reduced the total weed density to 19.0 plants m-2, similar to Metribuzin at a rate of 800 g ha-1 (16.0 plants m-2 ). The efficiency of Metribuzin herbicide at 400 g ha-1 combined with one or two hoeings reduced the number of weed densities by 19.3 and 10.6 plants m-2 for one hoeing and two hoeings, respectively. Background: To determine the optimal water irrigation method combined with covering material for Allium chinense growth and yield on acid sulfate soil. Methods: The field experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design, which include four treatments, each with four replications. The plot size was 83.3 m2 (19.6 m in length, 4.25 m in width). Treatments were flooding irrigation combined with rice straw covering (FI-RS), flooding irrigation combined with Eleocharis dulcis covering (FI-ED, control), spray irrigation combined with rice straw covering (SI-RS) and spray irrigation combined with Eleocharis dulcis covering (SI-ED). Result: Experimental results showed that Allium chinense planted on the treatment of SI increased clump height (47.2 cm) and weight of bulb (4.38 g), gave the highest yield of 40.9 t ha-1 and increased up to 25.9% in comparison to planted in conventional method (control). The spray irrigation method was more suitable than the flooding irrigation method for growing Allium chinense. Background: Present study, aimed to assess effect of organic and inorganic crop mulching on physical, physiological and biochemical quality of fresh cowpea beans. Methods: Cowpea (cv. Kashi Kanchan bush-type) was grown during two consecutive seasons from April 2018 to July 2019 under four different mulching treatments. Mulching treatments included no mulch; wheat straw mulch (organic mulch); black mulch and silver mulch. Black and silver mulches were made of 25 microns LDPE sheet. Cowpea was grown as per standard agronomic practices and physical, biochemical and postharvest quality parameters of beans were evaluated. Result: Results indicated that bean length (28.7cm) was highest under silver mulch whereas bean thickness (9.10 mm), width (9.29 mm) and 100 bean weight (1094.5 g) were highest under organic mulch. Likewise, protein content (28.63%), total phenolic content (17.0 µg GAE/100 g) and total antioxidant activity (46.84 µmol trolox equiv./100 g) were found highest in beans produced under organic mulch. Black gram is vital in South Asia, with organic farming promoting sustainability by enhancing soil fertility, agro-ecosystem quality, and crop nutrition. However, limited research and complex cultivation methods hinder its widespread adoption. Overcoming these challenges is essential for expanding organic black gram production to meet the growing demand for sustainable agriculture. This review article deals with various techniques and prospects of organic black gram production by collecting important information spread across organic black gram production research articles published on the internet. It is found that the application of 3 percent Panchagavya foliar spray increases physiological growth, leaf area index, dry matter production, chlorophyll content, N content, yield, and yield attributes of black gram. It is also found that the proper and effective use of bio-fertilisers has more advantages over other fertilizers. Farmers can use a foliar application of Panchagavya, bio-fertiliser, and other non-chemical practices for efficient production of organic black gram. Through this review, it is concluded that the research for organic production of black gram is limited, so focus should be given to organic black gram production research for the development of efficient technologies and the instant dissemination of findings among farmers. Mulching is a widely used agricultural water conservation measure in the semiarid regions of Northwest China. In order to explore the response process of different film mulching methods to soil microorganisms, we characterized the effect of different film mulching methods on soil microbial diversity and community structure characteristics in the root zone of drip-irrigated maize during the heading and maturity stages using high-throughput sequencing of 16SrDNA and ITS amplicons combined with bioinformatics analysis. Full mulching (FM) was contrasted to controls of no mulching (NM) and half-mulching (HM), yielding an order of microbial diversity, abundance, and evenness scores of HM > FM > NM. The HM and FM treatments reduced the relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria (the most abundant bacteria) in the bacterial community structure but increased that of Acidobacteria and Chloroflexi. In the fungal community structure, HM decreased the abundance of Sordariomycetes but increased that of Eurotiomycetes (the most abundant fungi). The abundance and community structure of bacteria were significantly correlated with soil temperature and those of fungi with pH. HM improved network complexity and competitive relationships among bacteria, while FM increased the relationship between fungal groups and the symbiosis of fungal communities. HM significantly increased maize yield (20.37% and 6.01% above NM and FM, respectively). In summary, full mulching was more favorable than no mulching for soil microbial diversity and community structure composition, but soil microbial diversity and yield responded better to half-mulching. These results provide a background for improving the yield of drip-irrigated maize and protecting the microbial ecosystems of farmland soils. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study describes a novel spray-on mulch material as an alternative to currently used weed control methods. The mulch material is based on renewable raw materials, mainly rapeseed oil, starch and sodium alginate. Laboratory tests were conducted to obtain a mulch material with the best possible properties. Formulations with different ingredients were prepared and tested for their material properties. The formulations were investigated for potential shrinkage tendency and heat resistance as well as water resistance. Further tests such as resistance to mould infestation and aerobic degradability according to DIN EN ISO 17556 were carried out with the formulation that performed best in the previous tests. Mould resistance was enhanced by adding sodium benzoate. In the laboratory experiment, the CO2 decomposition rate was about 30% after seven weeks. With the favouritised variant, which was found step by step through the experiments, an outdoor field test was carried out to investigate the durability under natural conditions over the vegetation period. In the field, the mulch material maintained its function for six months. In the greenhouse, the effect of the mulch material on weeds was studied. It was found that the mulch material showed a high efficiency in controlling above-ground biomass of Elymus repens, Amaranthus retroflexus, and Setaria viridis. In addition, the biomass of the roots of Amaranthus retroflexus and Elymus repens was reduced. A mulch is a layer of material applied to the surface of an area of soil. Mulches are used for various reasons in agriculture but water conservation and erosion control are the most important objectives particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. Other reasons for use of mulching include soil temperature modification, weed control, soil conservation and after decomposition of organic mulch add plant nutrients, improvement in soil structure, increase crop quality and yield. Conservation of soil moisture by application of mulches becomes essential for profitable cultivation of the crop under rainfed condition of semi-arid ecosystem. In spite of no assured irrigation in these regions, the moisture conservation technique is not in practice. Mulches not only conserve soil moisture but also impart manifold beneficial effects, like suppression of extreme fluctuation of soil temperature and reduction of water loss through evaporation, resulting in more stored soil moisture, maintenance of soil fertility, suppression of weed growth, improvement in growth and yield. The requirement of water through mulch can further be reduced by using locally available organic materials as mulches which not only save irrigation water but also conserves soil moisture. The preparation of biodegradable mulch film with paper-based materials has become a significant focus in mulch film development due to the serious pollution caused by plastic mulch film. This study utilized the esterification cross-linking reaction of LA, PVA, and GA to coat the surface of paper as the substrate. FTIR, TGA, XRD, SEM, tensile testing, and oxygen, water vapor barrier performance tests were performed. The optimal conditions for film preparation were determined to be a 10 % PVA aqueous solution, 5 % GA content, and a PVA/LA/GA ratio of 1:2:1. The resulting film paper exhibited a dry strength of 6.52 kN/m, a wet strength of 0.23 kN/m, a tearing degree of 969.35 mN, a Cobb value of 12.04 g/m2, a water vapor transmission rate of 573.27 g m−2 24 h−1, and an oxygen transmission rate of 7.373 cm3 m−2 24 h−1. After a 6-week landfill degradation test, the film showed a degradation rate of 25.3 %, while still maintaining a tensile strength of 1.89 kN/m. Field application tests in greenhouses confirmed that the film paper facilitated the growth of strawberry, its mechanical and barrier properties suitable for a biodegradable paper mulch. We analysed the effects of black geotextile inter-row mulch, grass mulch and clean tillage as a control on the microclimate, anthocyanin components and fruit quality of 'Xinyu' table grape in a semi-arid climate. Black geotextile inter-row mulch increased the air and soil temperatures, while grass mulch decreased these. Six types of anthocyanins were detected in the grapes. Around 50% of the total anthocyanins were malvidin based (38.60%–39.10%) and peonidin based (25.80%–31.10%), with malvidin-3-O-glucoside being the main pigment (38.75%–39.05%), followed by peonidin-3-O-glucoside (23.84%–28.68%). The soluble solid content, reducing sugar content and sugar-acid ratio for the black geotextile treatment group were 12.93%, 10.05% and 25.85% higher, respectively, than the control. By contrast, grapes in the grass mulch treatment group had a significantly lower soluble solid content than the control, with a 7.32% reduction being observed. Neither type of mulch had a large effect on the vitamin C content nor yield. However, both black geotextile inter-row mulch and grass mulch could regulate the orchard microclimate and increased the total anthocyanin content by 36.04% and 5.03%, respectively, compared with the control. Sunburn is possibly the main problem affecting the apple production in the Southern Hemisphere including Chile. This study focused on determining the effect of shade nets to reduce sunburn incidence and reflective mulch to improve colour on canopy microclimate, vegetative growth, fruit quality, return bloom and profitability of two apple cultivars ('Gala Baigent' and 'Fuji Raku Raku') in southern Chile. The treatments evaluated were net, mulch, net + mulch. Trees without net or mulch served as the control. Results showed that PAR transmitted under the netting was reduced in an average of 26% and the mulch increased the reflected PAR from 3% to 5% (grass row control) to 20%–37%. Shoot length, yield, fruit maturity and return bloom were not affected using either net or mulch. The incidence of sunburn under net was reduced by 76%–80%, compared to the control; however, it also reduced fruit colouration, especially in 'Fuji Raku Raku'. The use of mulch under shade net increased the amount in 27% and 9% (average of seasons) of fruit in the Premium category of colour for 'Gala Baigent' and 'Fuji Raku Raku', respectively, which is only economically justified in circumstances of high incidence of sunburn and limitations of fruit colour. Field mulching and deficit irrigation are applied more frequently in the North China Plain for higher water use efficiency. In order to explore the physiological response of winter wheat to mulching materials under different irrigation amounts, a field experiment with three mulching (no mulching, NM; transparent film mulching, TFM; and straw mulching, SM) and two drip irrigation (full and deficit irrigation, FI and DI) treatments were set up. Soil water content, leaf gas exchange parameters, leaf abscisic acid content, and stomatal morphological parameters were measured. The results showed that the soil water content of TFM and SM treatments were higher than that of NM treatment by 12.4%–29.8% and 6.1%–7.1% under FI, respectively. Because of the lower value and larger differences among treatments of soil water content at the filling stage treatment effects on gas exchange parameters were significant. Comparing to NM treatment under FI, the stomatal conductance of TFM and SM treatments under FI increased by 95.9% and 97.9%, respectively; however, the gas exchange parameters of TFM and SM treatments under DI had significantly different responses. In a manner that the net photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance of TFM treatment increased by 21.7% and 71.7%, while that of SM treatment decreased by 27.2% and 36.1%. Those changes of the gas exchange parameters were accompanied with the change of stomatal morphological parameters and ABA. Line correlations were found between stomatal conductance and leaf abscisic acid content, net photosynthetic rate, and the stomatal perimeter. To sum up, the changes in leaf abscisic acid content and stomatal morphological characteristics mediated the responses of leaf gas exchange parameters to different treatments. The results also suggested that if one needs to reduce the irrigation amounts, transparent plastic film mulching instead of straw mulching should be applied to compensate for the drawback of the lower soil water content. This paper presents the design of an integrated potato-planting machine capable of full-film covering, creating micro-ditches on ridges, and covering seed rows with soil. The machine addresses the challenges of traditional methods, allowing for mechanized planting with complete film coverage and individual seed row soil covering. The key components of the prototype were analyzed and designed. This includes the seeding system, the pointed wing-shaped trencher for creating micro-ditches, and the straddling film-mulching device. Additionally, the operating mechanism of these core components was analyzed. Field trials demonstrated an 85% success rate for seed depth placement under the film. The machine also achieved a 90% qualified index for seed potato spacing, with a 6% repetitive seeding rate and a 3% missed seeding rate. Furthermore, the qualified rate for covered soil width on seed rows was 94%, and the qualified rate for covered soil thickness was 93%. The adjacent row spacing achieved an 88% success rate. The degree of mechanical damage to the exposed surface of the mulch film was minimal, at only 30.2 mm2/m2. These results meet all the national and industry standards. The successful field trials confirm the effectiveness of the machine in performing integrated fertilization, sowing, ridging, full-film covering, and seed row soil covering. An agronomy field experiment was conducted at Ram Dhan Singh Seed Farm, CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar, India, at 29°47' N latitude and 75°47′ E longitude in a semi-arid climate having loamy sand soil during two successive years to compare the efficacy of different levels of hydrogel and mulch application along with conventional and zero tillage in maize cultivation under rainfed conditions. The maize hybrid cultivar HQPM 10 was tested under three levels of hydrogel (control, 2.5 and 5.0 kg/ha), two levels of crop cultivation (conventional and zero tillage) and two levels of moisture conservation (control and residue/mulch). Zero tillage, residue retention/mulching and hydrogel application increased soil moisture retention capacity, crop maturity, plant height, grain yield, stover yield and water productivity in rainfed maize. Zero tillage produced significantly higher grain yield (5466 and 5339 kg/ha) as compared to conventional tillage (4041 and 4103 kg/ha) There was significant increase in grain yield due to residue retention/mulching 4.0 t/ha (5058 and 5082 kg/ha) than no mulching (4449 and 4360 kg/ha). Among all hydrogel levels, application of hydrogel 5.0 kg/ha recorded the maximum grain yield in rainfed maize (4921 and 4951 kg/ha) being significantly higher than control (4544 and 4506 kg/ha). Rationale: Plastic mulch film manages weed growth and moisture loss on the surface of cropping beds. The chemical components of such plastics include polymer(s), additives and non‐intentionally added substances (NIASs). The unknown chemical nature and behaviours of these constituents require investigation due to their potential to add to the anthropogenic chemical burden in the agrifood system. Methods: Solvent extracts of a commercial 15% polylactic acid (PLA)/85% poly(butylene adipate‐co‐terephthalate) mulch film were investigated using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) with electron ionisation to characterise the additive and NIAS components. The obscurity of some of the NIASs meant their identification was not readily achieved through routine MS library comparisons. As such, the identification of several polymer‐derived compounds required interpretation of the MS data and re‐application of the derived fragmentation patterns with reference to the wider literature. Unknowns were confirmed using commercially available compounds. Results: Unknown NIASs were identified as cyclic oligoesters comprised of the monomeric building blocks of the polymer system. Cyclic structures derived from the monomers of polybutylene adipate (PBA) and polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) fragmented through a primary pathway involving 1,5‐ and 1,3‐H transfers at ester linkages. Characteristic ions at m/z 111, 129, 183 and 201 for PBA‐derived cyclic oligoesters and m/z 104, 132, 149 and 221 for PBT‐derived cyclic oligoesters were assigned in the mass spectra of unknowns. Cyclic oligoesters containing sebacate moieties were also identified, indicating the presence of polybutylene sebacate as an unexpected component of the mulch. Conclusions: Systematic analyses of the sort reported here are valuable for providing alternative approaches for the identification of plastic‐related chemicals. Open publication of MS spectral data is required to build a greater understanding of the mulch film chemical components contributing to the environmental chemical load introduced to agroecosystems.
