Introduction: Dental Caries is primarily a disease of multifactorial origin. The streptococcus mutans the causative agent adheres to the tooth surface and breaks down the sugar to produce lactic acid as the by product which brings about demineralisation of tooth structure. There is a need to identify substance which prevents adhesion of the organism to the tooth surface thereby preventing colonisation. Aim: To assess conditioning of the tooth surface with butter prior to subjecting the tooth to demineralisation. Materials and Methods: An in vitro experimental trial was conducted on 45 non carious premolars. The teeth were divided in 3 groups of 15 each. Group I received no pretreatment. The group II and III received thin and thick layer of butter coating, respectively. The teeth were then immersed in demineralising solution and the effect of the of the same was assessed using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Since the data obtained was qualitative, any statistical test were not applied. The observations recorded were based on the repetition of the similar findings in more than 50% of the samples. Results: The results of the study indicated the presence of islands of protected enamel and limited destruction in the prismatic pattern on the samples with thin coating of butter. Samples with thick butter coating showed presence of intact prismatic substance in contrast to the unprotected teeth which showed loss of prismatic substance. Conclusion: Pretreatment of the tooth surface with thin coating of butter prior to exposing the tooth to cariogenic environment protects the enamel from undergoing demineralisation.

Background: Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is employed in caries prevention and treatment; however, tooth discoloration post treatment is a significant disadvantage, which can be reduced using glutathione (GSH), a water soluble tripeptide., Aim: To evaluate and compare the effect of glutathione biomolecule (GSH) and potassium iodide (KI) along with SDF on tooth discoloration and shear bond strength of glass ionomer cement (GIC) on the tooth surface., Methods: Artificial caries were created on 48 extracted unblemished premolars and divided into four groups (SDF, SDF + KI, SDF + GSH, and Water). The solutions were applied according to the manufacturer's instructions, and the samples were incubated for 24 hours. The color assessment was recorded on days 1, 7, and 14 by using a spectrophotometer. Following the color assessment, all the treated samples were bonded with GIC. The shear bond strength was evaluated using a universal testing machine., Results: Mixing SDF with GSH initially reduced tooth discoloration. Although there was an increase in the discoloration after 2 weeks, it was still less when compared to the SDF group. The application of GSH and KI post SDF application had no significant difference in the shear bond strength of GIC on the tooth surface., Conclusions: The use of GSH along with SDF helps in reducing the discoloration without compromising the shear bond strength., (Copyright © 2024 Nigerian Journal of Clinical Practice.)

Peripheral giant-cell granulomas (PGCGs) are reddish color lesions of the gingiva which are frequently diagnosed on a routine basis by many dentists in the regular dental practice. Most of the lesions of PGCG are slow-growing, nonaggressive with asymptomatic, and tend to recur. Here, we exhibit a case of PGCG of the upper jaw in a 15-year-old girl child. She presented with a chief complaint of a lump on her upper anterior tooth region for 2-3 months. A well-defined painless, sessile exophytic growth, measuring about 1 cm × 0.5 cm in dimension with pinkish red in color with a firm consistency, was noted. Moreover, no secondary changes were seen. On the radiograph also, no changes in the bone/tooth were observed. The provisional diagnosis was identified as benign lesions such as pyogenic granuloma, peripheral ossifying fibroma, and PGCG and was made based on the clinical history and radiographic findings, and the confirmative diagnosis was given after histopathological examination. Background: Establishing good hygiene habits are valuable for present and future oral health. Below 6 years, tooth brushing should be performed by parents, as increasing dexterity and cognition may permit supervised brushing until the child is capable of independent brushing., Aim and Objectives: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of modified oral irrigation device in children in terms of plaque control and to compare the effectiveness of plaque control with manual brushing with the modified oral irrigation device in children., Materials and Methods: A randomized clinical trial was performed on 12 subjects who were allocated to the two study groups. After obtaining the consent, the control group was instructed tooth brushing with regular pediatric commercially available toothbrush and the intervention group with modified oral irrigation device. Plaque scores in both groups were assessed pre- and post-brushing using modified navy plaque index., Results: The data were subjected to Descriptive statistics and Paired t -test using SPSS version 22. Intragroup comparison of mean difference of plaque score in control group and intervention group pre- and post-brushing was statistically significant. Intergroup comparison of manual brushing group with modified oral irrigation group shows P < 0.05 was statistically significant., Conclusion: Within the limitation of the present study, it has been found novel pediatric oral hygiene need Station is more effective than manual brushing since it combined the effect of brushing, flossing (water floss), and rinsing in children simultaneously and at the same time did not demand any special motor skill., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts of interest.

Objectives: To assess the dental caries, periodontal health, and malocclusion of school children aged 12 and 15 years in Shimla city and to compare them in government and private schools., Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study of 12- and 15-year-old children in government and private schools was conducted in Shimla city, Himachal Pradesh, India. A sample of 1011 school children (both males and females) was selected by a two-stage cluster sampling method. Clinical recordings of dental caries and malocclusion were done according to World Health Organization diagnostic criteria 1997. Periodontal health was assessed by Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs index. The data collected was analyzed by SPSS package 13. The statistical tests used were t-test and Chi-square tests., Results: The prevalence of dental caries was 32.6% and 42.2% at 12 and 15 years, respectively. At the12 years of age, the mean decayed, missing, filled teeth was 0.62 ± 1.42 and it was 1.06 ± 2.93 at 15 years of age. Females had higher level of caries than males at both the ages. At both ages, mean of decayed teeth was statistically higher in government schools as compared with private schools. Children in government schools had significantly less number of mean filled teeth at both ages as compared with private schools. The healthy component of gingiva was present in higher percentage of children in private schools as compared with government schools at both the age groups. The prevalence of malocclusion among the 12- year-old (58.1%) was more as compared with that among the 15-year-old (53.5%)., Conclusion: The caries experience of 12- and 15-year-old children was low but the prevalence of gingivitis and malocclusion was quite high. Effective oral health promotion strategies need to be implemented to improve the oral health of school children further in Shimla city.
