When faced with noisy time series data, significant challenges are encountered by clustering algorithms, including noise interference, temporal distortions, and irregular data patterns. In order to cope with the challenge of noisy time series data and to improve the performance of clustering algorithms, a Move-Split-Merge based Fuzzy C-Means algorithm (MSMFCM) is proposed. Firstly, dynamic wavelet basis functions as well as Median Absolute Deviation (MAD) are used to optimize the wavelets to reduce noise and highlight the actual data patterns in the original data. Secondly, a similarity matrix, constructed using the Move-Split-Merge (MSM) edit distance metric, quantitatively assesses the similarity between each pair of time series data points. Thirdly, to improve clustering efficiency, K-means + + is used to optimize the initial centers of the Fuzzy C-Means algorithm. Among twenty datasets, the performance of MSMFCM is compared with that of K-means, K-medoids, Fuzzy C-Means, K-shape, and algorithms incorporating Dynamic Time Warping and the Longest Common Subsequence. Simulation results show that MSMFCM significantly outperforms its closest competitors in the Adjusted Rand Index (ARI) and Normalized Mutual Information (NMI) evaluation indicators, with an average improvement of 26.09% for ARI and 18.86% for NMI. It means that MSMFCM has better clustering performance for noisy time series data, which will provide the application of clustering on a wider range of data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research article abstracts, the second most-read part of research papers after titles, generally follow disciplinary conventions, which are often manifested in their language use. This study analyzed lexical bundles or multi-word sequences in move texts of a one-million-word corpus of English-language medical research article abstracts, with particular attention to vocabulary levels. The most frequent lexical bundles, such as "the primary end point was", often occurred once per text and predominantly took part in realizing a move. The coverage of the first thousand New General Service List was 63.6% for the entire corpus but was around 80% for bundles in Move 3, describing principal results, and those in Move 4, evaluating the results. Many of the sequences were research-oriented bundles, used to express research contexts. The bundles were made up of relatively accessible word items, but the sequences occurred to realize highly specific research contexts. The findings suggest that becoming familiar with the bundle may need increasing awareness of disciplinary conventions such as guideline adherences and statistical procedures. Context: Moves between care settings in later life present significant challenges for older people. Social care practitioners play a significant role in supporting these moves, but sometimes lack the skills, confidence and resources to meet the needs of older people and their carers. Objectives: To identify and synthesise unmet move-related needs of older people, the approaches used by social care practitioners, and ways to improve move-related practice. Methods: We searched 7 electronic databases and grey literature from 25 websites, screening 8535 records published between 2010 and 2021. Findings: Thematic synthesis of 39 documents focussed on two themes: (1) challenges and unmet needs of older people and their carers, particularly during the planning, decision-making and moving in stages; and (2) insights from good practice schemes and ways to improve move-related social care practice. These include applying a person-centred approach, involving older people and their carers in planning and decision-making, adopting proactive approaches, exploring alternatives to care homes, promoting effective communication and information sharing, and ensuring continuity of care and cross-sector coordination throughout moves. Limitations: The chosen inclusion criteria resulted in the omission of potentially interesting insights regarding short-term intermediate care and post-move long-term settlement in new settings. Implications: The review highlights the critical need for comprehensive support and guidance during older people’s moves between care settings. It emphasises the importance of practice-oriented information and evidence-based approaches to support older people, their carers, and social care practitioners throughout these transitions.

Constraining the geometry and displacement of crustal‐scale normal faults has historically been challenging, owing to difficulties with geophysical imaging and inability to identify precise cut‐offs at depth. Using a modified workflow previously applied to contractional systems, flexural‐kinematic (Move) and thermal‐kinematic (Pecube) models are integrated with apatite (U‐Th)/He (AHe) and apatite fission track (AFT) data from Teton footwall transects to constrain total Teton fault displacement (Dmax). Models with slip onset at ∼10 Ma and flexure parameters that best match the observed Teton flexural profile require Dmax > 8 km to produce young (<10 Ma) AHe ages observed at low elevation footwall positions in the Tetons. For the same slip onset, models with Dmax of 11–13 km provide the best match to observed AHe data, but displacements ≥16 km are required to produce observed AFT ages (13.6–12.0 Ma) at low elevations. A more complex model with slow slip onset at ∼25 Ma followed by faster slip at ∼10 Ma yields a good match between modeled and observed AHe ages at a Dmax of 13–15 km. However, this model predicts low elevation AFT ages 6–8 Ma older than observed ages, even at Dmax values of 16–17 km. Based on this analysis and integration with previous studies, we propose a unified evolution wherein the Teton fault likely experienced 11–13 km of Miocene‐recent displacement, with AFT data likely indicating a pre‐to early Miocene cooling history. Importantly, this study highlights the utility of using integrated flexural‐ and thermal‐kinematic models to resolve displacement histories in extensional systems. Teacher-moderated online chats are a common option for conducting writing conferences with students. The efficacy of chat sessions is impacted by the expectations for and structure of these sessions. This corpus-based study used a move analysis to determine the purposes and organization of 129 chats between 3 experienced teachers and 106 students of primarily Chinese and Arabic origin in 9 freshman English as a second language (ESL) writing courses. Chats occurred after a draft of an essay assignment had been returned with written teacher feedback, in order to provide opportunities for students to receive individualized input. Findings show that chats are structured to serve three functions: opening and closing social moves (greetings, conversational pleasantries) meant to establish rapport; management moves that serve to structure and orient the chat; and instructional moves in which the teachers and students confer and additional feedback is provided. However, chats were not as effective at engaging participants as they could be due to a lack of intentionality and reciprocity. With prior research showing chats are a useful addition to other forms of teacher electronic feedback, we offer suggestions for improving the use of instructional chats in freshman ESL writing classes, in order to better engage students. Climate change is one kind of erratic behaviour and hazards of environmental consequences such as floods, flash floods, drought, heat & cold waves, cyclones, high and low tides, river bank erosion, salinity intrusion, etc. The household survey and qualitative study approaches were performed to explore the changes in vulnerable peoples' ecological migration perspective in disaster-affected southern part of Bangladesh. People usually move to the nearest town and peri-urban areas to seek jobs due to concurrent cyclones, storm surges, and floods in the coastal areas. Again, heavy rainfall and flash-flood conditions usually create intra-district temporary migration to maintain their daily livelihood smoothly. In the char lands, this migration takes place due to riverbank erosion where family members were forced to relocate to a new residence. It occurs when the income-generating activities of people are disrupted by ecological events. Families leave their homes during the disaster period and return, once the conditions are back to normal. Movement for rural people needs constant land management systems including governance, ownership rights and access and technical support for financing land use and making productive use of land to cope with frequent natural calamities. The government of Bangladesh therefore must consider these challenges and gradually improve its capacity to prepare its technology to renovate the vulnerable local people into a climate resilient one. This paper reports a contrastive genre analysis of rhetorical structures of linguistic research articles written in English and Vietnamese. The quantitative method was employed with data from a corpus of 35 English and 35 Vietnamese research articles randomly selected from internationally and Vietnamese reputable journals of linguistics published in the five-year period from 2015 to 2019. The rhetorical model of research articles in Applied Linguistics, as suggested by Pho (2008), was applied as a framework to analyse the corpus of this study. Findings reveal some similarities and differences in the structure of English and Vietnamese research articles. Generally, the macro-structure of Vietnamese articles is basically similar to that of English articles. However, in English articles, there are often more parts than in Vietnamese ones, and the discussion tends to be separated into a single section. The findings of this study can shed some light on the path of graduate students and novice scholars, especially Vietnamese researchers, who strive to publish their scientific achievements in reputable journals so that they will be accepted as new dwellers of the linguistic community. Over the past few years, genre studies in research article abstracts have prompted the interest of numerous researchers. However, the scope of genre analysis in studying the abstracts of review articles is highly restricted. Thus, offering a structured framework as guidelines for the writers can serve as a resolution to the issue. The objective of this study is to examine the composition of abstracts in review articles within the fields of health information and nursing. To this end, a total of 100 abstracts were chosen from articles published in prestigious international journals. The present study utilised Soy, Arsyad, and Syafryadin’s (2023) five-move model. A slight modification was introduced in the present study by including the Result move separated from the Discussion move. The results identified six moves: Background, Objective, Method, Result, Discussion, and Conclusion. The method move (M3) was obligatory in nursing, while the objective move (M2) was obligatory in health information. Then, Background-Objective-Method-Result-Conclusion was the most frequent sequence in the two subdisciplines. As a practical implication, novice writers might consider using the fundamental principle of rhetorical move structure while writing an abstract for a review article. The present study can potentially serve as a basis for further studies.

The urban cemetery is the material carrier of citizens' view of life and death, and it also evolves with time as a special part of the urban form. Since the reform of the housing system in the 1990s, China has entered a period of rapid urbanization, and the urban cemeteries has entered a cycle of shock and accelerated transformation. The cemeteries originally located on the urban fringe were gradually surrounded by new built-up areas as the city sprawled, and then most of them inevitably migrated outward under the pressure of urban population explosion and land shortage. Taking Nanjing as an example, this paper presents the morphological evolution of Nanjing's urban cemetery since the early 20th century, discusses the relationship between the evolution of the cemetery and the urban fringe belt, and analyzes the reasons for its evolution. The different types of morphological evolution of Nanjing cemetery are further summarized, revealing the general law and its Chinese particularity. The article concludes with a discussion of the value and significance of morphological research on urban cemeteries in China.

Presidential debate (PD) draws the most attention compared to other political discourses as the candidates present their profile and proposals using rhetorical communicative strategy to convince voter candidates and defeat their adversaries. However, the generic structure of PD is seldomly being the perspective of linguistics studies. The paper aims at scrutinizing the genre of USA Presidential debate using the genre analysis framework proposed by Swales and Bhatia. Thus, the study employs two parts of genre analysis: move, and strategies analysis. The present study finds that there are six moves of USA PD namely greetings-informing the debate format, introducing the topic, thesis, argumentation, and closure. The communicative purpose of the moves is persuading the American voters in the election day. The finding implies pivotal stages of PD to construct political discourse. This study is expected to contribute to EFL teaching and learning especially in teaching genre exposition integrated in four English skills.

Philosophers have accepted the principle of the existence of change in motion and time abroad and have tried to provide an acceptable analysis of it. One of the fundamental questions about change, movement, and time is whether the connection seen outside is a description of external facts or human perceptions. Leading research deals with the fact that connection is not only an external description but also perceptions, and on this basis the theories of philosophers, whether positive or negative, are challenged. What is certain about the changes in the universe is that perceptions are constantly received, but that this connection is also a description outside the mind is not self-evident and needs to be proven. As in the discussion of time, what is obvious is the gradual feeling that is perceived and makes time for people, but that the flow of description is also out of the mind needs to be proven. Such an interpretation of change, motion, and time plays a crucial role in explaining theological and philosophical issues such as the existence of time in the extraterrestrial worlds, such as the world of example and the world of intellects, the contraction and expansion of time, and the analysis of narrative arguments about time in other worlds. Among the results of his research is that 1- By including the perceptual description in the truth of time, a single truth can be done at different times for individuals. 2- The existence of time in the world of example and the world of intellects is a reasonable thing. 3- The contraction and expansion of time can also be philosophically analyzed according to the perceptual role of human beings.

Genre analysis studies have refined our understanding of the rhetorical organization of scientific articles. The present paper reports on a study which investigated the rhetorical organization of the conclusion section of English conceptual review articles in linguistics and applied linguistics fields. Drawing on a move-based genre analysis approach, the study was based on a corpus of more than 500 English conceptual review articles. The analysis involved detecting the generic moves and sub-moves that writers use to achieve communicative purposes. The results showed that first, conclusions in English conceptual review articles differ from conclusions in research papers in terms of primary communicative purposes. Second, conclusions of review articles contain a set five moves, including 1) territory, 2) purpose, 3) structure, 4) conclusion, and 5) suggestion. Third, conclusions of review articles feature a cyclic pattern in the last two moves, as the writer reports main findings of prior research, interprets them, relates them to educational practice, and recommends further research based on what is felt most necessary. Last but not least, unlike research papers conclusions, review articles conclusions contain ‘suggestion’ as a core feature of their rhetorical organization. The results of the study benefit both theoreticians and practitioners.

Nowadays, the bulk of e-commerce is carried out in English. At the same time, however, the emergence and growth of Arab e-commerce has attracted attention from e-commerce giants, such as AliBaba and Amazon. Acquiring a deeper understanding of culture-specific advertising practices is thus quickly becoming necessary for digital advertisers and marketers seeking to tap into both English- and Arabic-speaking consumer markets. Despite this, little has been written on online advertising discourse within the particular contexts. To address this, the present study reports on a pragmatic two-level rhetorical analysis of the macro-structure of the sub-genre of online advertisements in English and Arabic and focuses on the identification of the persuasive linguistic features employed to signal constituent moves. Drawing upon Swales’ move-step model of rhetorical analysis, the exploration of a comparable corpus of 100 online advertisements of skin care products per language introduced new layers in the rhetorical organisation of [online] advertisements. The results revealed that English and Arabic advertisements consisted of both common and culture-specific rhetorical moves. The persuasive strategies employed common lexico-grammatical features at syntactic, semantic, and discoursal level, albeit to a different extent. Overall, the results of this study illustrate that online advertisements of skin care products could be considered as a particular sub-genre with context-specific macro- and micro-structures. Through the investigation of the specific datasets, this study expands upon the existing analytical frameworks used for the study of advertising discourse and adds to the intercultural exploration of the rhetorical structures and persuasive strategies used in online advertisements.

This study aimed at: 1) investigating the move and steps found in quantitative and qualitative research articles discussion; 2) investigating the rhetoric structure patterns of quantitative and qualitative research article discussion. This study is a qualitative-research focusing on genre analysis on qualitative and quantitative RA discussions. There were 20 qualitative and 20 quantitative research article discussions of EFL and applied linguistics journals were investigated in this research. Using Yang & Allison’s (2003) framework to analyze the data, it is found that all moves in the framework were employed in RA discussion of both qualitative and quantitative research. However, the number of occurrences of each move were different between discussion section of these two different approaches. Furthermore, the patterns of both qualitative and quantitative RA discussion was not significantly different. There were two types of patterns in RA discussion both in qualitative and quantitative, repetitive pattern and organized pattern. although there were some variations in each of those patterns. The present study provides more evidence of generic structure of RA discussion section as well as proposes some useful insights related to move analysis on research article discussion in ELT and Linguistics area. Limitations and recommendations are discussed in this study.

This paper addresses a certain contradiction in the application of the Phase Impenetrability Condition (PIC) to domains involving the long-distance Genitive of Negation (GoN) and wh-movement in Polish. It appears that in syntactic domains of the tensed sentence including an infinitive complement, there is a tension between a long-distance dependency (holding between NEG in the main clause and the embedded object in genitive) and a cyclic operation of wh-movement. The operation of wh-movement, a classic example of Chomsky’s Move, observes cyclicity and the PIC, judging by the standard tests based on reconstruction (Chomsky 1995; Heycock 1995; Fox 1999; Safir 1999; Legate 2003; Witkoś 2003; Lebeaux 2009), while the Agree-based case marking requires the PIC to be inoperative in exactly the same context and in the same domain. Both operations place contradictory requirements on the PIC, which implies that this condition does not apply to them in the same manner: it always holds of Move but does not always hold of Agree.

This study reports on two knowledge elements of stance and schematic structure in order to help novice students increase the efficacy of their writing in business communication. With this regard, Santos’ (2002) Business Letters of Negotiation Model and Hyland’s (2005b) Stance Model of Interaction were drawn upon. Sixty business emails written by native English speaking (NS) and Iranian students of Business Management Departments in universities were analyzed. Two raters explored the corpus for their moves/steps frequencies and a concordance software was used in order to explore stance markers frequencies. To investigate whether Iranian and NS writers are statistically different from each other, the findings of frequencies were submitted to one-variable Chi-square test. The results showed that NS and Iranian writers are not different from each other in their content staging while they are providing information/answers or negotiating. Running counter to moves 2 and 23, move 3 turned out to have different results; there was a significant difference between NS and Iranian writers in their request of information/action/favors. Results presented no significant difference between NS and Iranian writers in their employment of hedges and attitude markers of stance with regard to one-variable Chi-square test results. For boosters, Chi-square test detected a significant difference between the groups only in move 2. There was a significant difference, however, between NS and Iranian writers in their use of self-mention markers in moves 3 and 23. The results of this paper have both theoretical and pedagogical significance.

This study also examined third semester students’ critical thinking perception. The aims of this research are to found what are the move-step structure that lies in students' review texts and students’ critical thinking perception. Qualitative method is used as the approach. Totally 33 review texts are analyzed. The result revealed that there are 3 moves found. There are Move 1 in the introduction paragraph. Then Move to via Step 1, Step 2, and Step 3 that found in the interpretative recount. The last move is Move 3 via Step 1 which is found in the evaluation and Move 3 via Step 2 found in the evaluative summation. The result showed 434 moves found from 33 texts. The Move that mostly found were Move 2 via Step 1 which resumed what was the artwork/thing that being reviewed. This research also figured out the perception of critical thinking dealing with their review text writing products. Interview and questionnaire are used to unveil the critical thinking perception of the students. Most of the students still need guidance from their lecturer to develop their writing skills to be more precise. HIGHLIGHTS: • There were three moves found in the review text. The move consisted of obligatory and optional. The analysis also showed that some students still reversed in writing the content of the interpretative recount and the evaluation. • The students understood the definition of the review text and the communicative purposes. They needed more facts to support their opinion or judgment in the review text.

This article aims to test the applicability and the possibility of adaptation of the Functional Grammar of Dance, which is at the core of the development of the new interdisciplinary research area called Kinesemiotics. As a model of analysis for movement-based communication, the Functional Grammar of Dance has already been used for the analysis of classical ballet choreography, and it is currently employed in a collaborative research project involving the authors of this article and their research group at Loughborough University in the UK, the University of Bremen in Germany, and the English National Ballet. The testing opportunity is provided by the challenging analysis of an iconic choreography of the 20th century: Lamentation, a solo piece created by Martha Graham. The analysis will show the applicability of the theory and the adaptability of the model of analysis, and it will also provide examples of the way a new type of annotation based on this grammar has been created and applied using the ELAN annotation software. The use of ELAN includes the implementation of a specifically compiled controlled vocabulary providing labels for coding the materiality, structure, and semantics of dance discourse systematically.

This study explores the rhetorical strategies employed in topic generalizations of increasing specificity in the introductions from the leading peer-reviewed journals. Specifically, we identified the substeps in Move1-Step1, which show how the writers promote the significance of the research area. The qualitative approach enabled us to distinguish eight substeps provisionally outlining the common patterning of the discourse and to analyze the linguistic choices enhancing the persuasiveness of claims. Citation, attitude markers, boosters and hedges have been found the most effective devices for preserving balance between assertion and concession. The quantitative analysis of the texts defined the frequency rate of the substeps discerned including their total sum of occurrences and percentages per introduction. The substep level analysis has contributed to scrutinizing the subtle communicative functions of the rhetorical strategies in the textual structure.

In this article, I analyse the infamous Cathy Newman interview with Jordan Peterson on the 16th of January 2018 and subsequent viewer comments on Channel 4's YouTube channel. My first hypothesis is that Newman's frequent attribution of statements to Peterson using the now notorious "so you are saying" gambit (YSG) is what triggered outrage among Peterson's followers, which, in turn, generated media interest. My second hypothesis is that the interview is best understood as a series of Face threats by Newman on Peterson using the YSG. To ascertain if my hypotheses are true, I performed corpus linguistic analyses on the interview and comments to provide objective descriptions of both. Episodes in which the YSG were used were identified and analysed using Goffman's (1967) Facework approach. My analysis shows that the YSG was indeed a salient feature of the interviewer's discourse and was used to attack the interviewee's Face.

This study expounds how the analysis of move and transitivity in the method, result, and discussion sections contributes to the advancement of novice writers' writing skills by providing a writing pattern applied when composing research articles. To this aim, a qualitative approach with descriptive technique is employed to encapsulate and explain the phenomena being studied. The data are the method, result, and discussion sections of research articles (RAs) drawn from top tier journals categorized as language and linguistics and analyzed based on macro structure (move and steps) and micro structure (transitivity). The results indicate that 11 moves and 38 steps discovered, in detail, these consist of three moves and 15 steps in method, four moves and 10 steps in result, and four moves and 13 steps in discussion. As for the successions of the move steps, few inter-move step shifts observed. This is in contrast with the outer-move step shifts that commonly occurred. Meanwhile, the outcomes of the transitivity analysis suggest that there are six processes revealed including material, relational, verbal, mental, existential, and behavioral consecutively with material dominating and behavioral the fewest. Writing a thesis or dissertation is a challenging procedure as it is one of the requirements of getting a graduate and postgraduate diploma. Writing an abstract like other parts of a thesis or dissertation has its criterion. For this reason, due to globalism, those abstracts written by non-native English speakers may lack some of the features of the abstract genre and move that must be included. This study examines the moves of M.A. and Ph.D. abstracts written by Turkish students between the 2009 and 2019 academic years on foreign language education at Cyprus International University. The data consisted of 50 abstracts chosen randomly from the ELT department. For the analysis, Hyland’s five-move model has been used. The study results reveal that 40 abstracts did not follow the five moves that Hyland has put forward. Moreover, it can be stated that the absence of some moves in the abstracts may cause restraint for readers to comprehend these studies in terms of communicative purposes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Nursing home residents can be faced with relocations within nursing home care for various reasons, whether individual or per group. We aimed to collect a broad stakeholder overview of observed and experienced impacts on residents and aspects that influence the impact., Methods: We conducted a qualitative study using semistructured interviews followed by one focus group. We recruited participants from various stakeholder perspectives based on differences in roles while having an interest or involvement in relocations, and experience with relocations. The interviews and focus group were audiorecorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using responsive and thematic analysis., Results: In 17 interviews including one duo interview, participants described the impact on residents varying from very positive to very negative. In addition, stakeholders addressed differences in impact related to the relocation phase (before, during, after). Aspects influencing the impact of relocations were (1) mental resilience of residents, (2) organisation of relocations, (3) social connections of residents, and (4) the new (care) environment. The focus group with six participants added further insights in the subtheme 'organisation of relocations', emphasising the importance of clear and timely communication with residents and relatives and recognizability of (personal) items and professional caregivers from the former nursing home., Conclusion: Stakeholders described the impact of relocations within nursing homes to vary between and within nursing home residents. Aspects they identified to influence this impact provide incentives to reduce the negative impact on residents and foster positive impact. This paper examines the structure of Kanuri DP (structure) Hypothesis within the framework of Abney (1987) and Chomsky (1995) Minimalist Programme (MP). In conducting the research, the researcher uses his native speaker intuition and other three competent native speakers of Kanuri to validate the data of this study. The study identifies Kanuri determiners as post head modifier language. The study identifies also two types of demonstrative modifiers –near and far demonstratives. The near demonstratives agree with their head nouns while the far demonstratives take both singular and plural head nouns. The far demonstratives do not show any form of agreement morphology between the nouns and their demonstrative modifiers. The analysis of DP Hypothesis shows the NP complement moves to the specifier position in the surface syntax which give rise to complement-head (C-H) order. The study further analyzes possessives, demonstratives and quantifiers under the DP hypothesis. The outcome of the study reveals that possessive determiner ‘nde’ (our) is base generated at the possessive position, moves and fills the D position under the DP in Kanuri while the far demonstrative ‘tudu’ (that) is also base generated at the Dem. Position of the determiner phrase (DP) -hence the D position is strong head position moves and fills the D position and the noun ‘fato’ (house) moves to the specifier position of the determiner phrase (DP) in order to check agreement feature in Kanuri.

Thanks to modern literary theories, critical approaches will help the critics to appreciate and explore a literary work. The practice of traditional literary criticisms was based on incorporating the intentions and biographical context of the author, while the modern literary theories provide the critics with different lenses allowing the critics to consider literary works based on certain assumptions within that school of theory and yield to new conclusions. Morphology of stories is one of those approached addressing the literary work (fiction) in a structured way and attempts to analyze the story on the basis of the roles of the characters and the movements in it. Using the descriptive method based on content analysis technique, library sources, and applying Vladimir Prop’s morphological theory, this paper aims to investigate the story of Mem û Zîn (Mem and Zin) by Ahmad Khani (1650– 1706) based on the story of Mam and Zayn by Mohammad Saeed Ramazan bouti. The findings demonstrate that the story of Mem and Zin has 21 functions out of 31 functions of Props and has two main and minor stories. The main story comprises of 6 moves and the minor one has 3 moves. The sequences of the functions, especially in the initial seven functions are not observed, and some of them appear in the middle and late stages of the story. There are also 13 characters in the main story and 7 characters in the minor story appearing in the following personae: Hero, Helper, Villain, False Hero and Donor.

Using Swales' (1990) CARS model and Hyland's (2005) interpersonal model of metadiscourse, this study takes a pragmatic approach to explore the rhetorical structure and metadiscoursal features of research article introductions in a comparable corpus of 40 introductions from applied linguistics and chemistry. Specifically, this article reports on a rhetorical analysis of introduction moves and an identification of metadiscourse markers and discourse functions they were conveying and focuses on the mapping of the markers most pervasively used to signal the moves. Results showed disciplinary differences regarding both move structure and metadiscourse use which could be attributed to the susceptibility of rhetorical practices and preferences to socio-rhetorical conventions in each community. In addition to their pedagogical implications, the results of this study could be of use for novice research article writers and/or students in applied linguistics and chemistry in order to better consolidate their credence and socialisation in their community through publication. Based on a formal analysis of the operations Merge and Move, I provide a computational answer to the question why Move might be an integral part of language. The answer is rooted in the framework of subregular complexity, which reveals that Merge is most succinctly analyzed in terms of the formal class TSL. Any cognitive device that can handle this level of complexity also possesses sufficient resources for Move. In fact, Merge and Move are remarkably similar instances of TSL. Consequently, Move has little computational or conceptual cost attached to it and comes essentially for free in any grammar that expresses Merge as compactly as possible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background As the population ages, older hospitalized patients are at increased risk for hospital-acquired morbidity. The Mobilization of Vulnerable Elders (MOVE) program is an evidence-informed early mobilization intervention that was previously evaluated in Ontario, Canada. The program was effective at improving mobilization rates and decreasing length of stay in academic hospitals. The aim of this study was to scale-up the program and conduct a replication study evaluating the impact of the evidence-informed mobilization intervention on various units in community hospitals within a different Canadian province. Methods The MOVE program was tailored to the local context at four community hospitals in Alberta, Canada. The study population was patients aged 65 years and older who were admitted to medicine, surgery, rehabilitation and intensive care units between July 2015 and July 2016. The primary outcome was patient mobilization measured by conducting visual audits twice a week, three times a day. The secondary outcomes included hospital length of stay obtained from hospital administrative data, and perceptions of the intervention assessed through a qualitative assessment. Using an interrupted time series design, the intervention was evaluated over three time periods (pre-intervention, during, and post-intervention). Results A total of 3601 patients [mean age 80.1 years (SD = 8.4 years)] were included in the overall analysis. There was a significant increase in mobilization at the end of the intervention period compared to pre-intervention, with 6% more patients out of bed (95% confidence interval (CI) 1, 11; p-value = 0.0173). A decreasing trend in median length of stay was observed, where patients on average stayed an estimated 3.59 fewer days (95%CI -15.06, 7.88) during the intervention compared to pre-intervention period. Conclusions MOVE is a low-cost, effective and adaptable intervention that improves mobilization in older hospitalized patients. This intervention has been replicated and scaled up across various units and hospital settings.

Following Swales’ (1981) definition of genre analysis many scholars have attempted to characterize good academic writing; however, this can be difficult and worrying for non-native writers. Since a well-written abstract encourages readers more effectively, the present study intended to find differences in the rhetorical structures of abstracts by TEFL students from the University of Tehran (UT) and Islamic Azad University of Gorgan (IAUG). To meet this end, 100 abstracts (50 abstracts by TEFL students from UT and 50 abstracts by TEFL students from IAUG) were randomly selected. Swales’ (1981) IMRD (Introduction, Method, Results and Discussion) and Swales’ (1990) CARS (Created A Research Space) models were employed to recognize the rhetorical structure of the abstracts. Then, the frequencies and sequences of moves and steps were calculated using chi-square to find the differences. The results revealed that there were significant differences between the abstracts by TEFL students from UT and IAUG. The findings indicated that TEFL students from IAUG followed the IMRD and CARS more than TEFL students from UT. The findings of this study have some pedagogical implications for both non-native writers and postgraduate students as well as English academic writing teachers and students.

Abstract Background Bed rest for older hospitalized patients places them at risk for hospital-acquired morbidity. The aim of this study was to conduct a replication study evaluating the impact of the evidence-informed mobilization intervention on surgery, psychiatry, medicine, and cardiology inpatient units. Methods A multi-component early mobilization intervention was tailored to the local context at seven hospitals in Ontario, Canada. The primary outcome was patient mobilization measured by conducting visual audits twice a week, three times a day. Secondary outcomes were hospital length of stay and discharge destination, which were obtained from hospital decision support data. The study population was patients aged 65 years and older who were admitted to surgery, psychiatry, medicine, and cardiology inpatient units between March and August 2014. Using an interrupted time series design, the intervention was evaluated over three time periods–pre-intervention, during, and post-intervention. Results A total of 3098 patients [mean age 78.46 years (SD 8.38)] were included in the overall analysis. There was a significant increase in mobility immediately after the intervention period compared to pre-intervention with a slope change of 1.91 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.74–3.08, P-value = 0.0014). A decreasing trend in median length of stay was observed in the majority of the participating sites. Overall, a median length of stay of 26.24 days (95% CI 23.67–28.80) was observed pre-intervention compared to 23.81 days (95% CI 20.13–27.49) during the intervention and 24.69 days (95% CI 22.43–26.95) post-intervention. The overall decrease in median length of stay was associated with the increase in mobility across the sites. Conclusions MOVE increased mobilization and these results were replicated across surgery, psychiatry, medicine, and cardiology inpatient units.

The nature-based religion of MOVE, most known for being victims of the violence of the state, also offer an exemplification of the use of the legal system by religious groups – the religification of law, wherein the legal system is seen as transcending the state and thus a potential check on the state's power. The study of academic discursive genres has received special attention in the last decade. However, studies on the thesis genre are still incipient, especially from the lexical-grammatical empirical perspective. Our main aim is to describe lexical-grammatically each rhetoric move of the genre thesis in linguistics, extracting and quantifying trigrams of lemmas in a set of texts composed by 33 undergraduates Linguistics thesis. Corpus linguistics tools are used for the automatic labeling of their lexical units, specifically to identify the pattern of lemmas used in the statistical analysis. Among the most relevant findings, it is worth noting that the trigrams of lemmas make it possible to differentiate 99.3% moves of the genre. In addition, the trigrams of each move are identified, which are functionally related to each communicative purpose. These findings make possible to establish a clear relationship between the linguistic forms and the communicative functions carried out in this genre. The southward flow of North Atlantic Deep Water makes up the major component of the deepwater limb of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). In the subtropical North Atlantic, it's flow is concentrated along the continental slope, forming a coherent Deep Western Boundary Current (DWBC). Both, observations and models show a high variability of the flow in this region. Here we use an eddy‐rich ocean model to show that this variability is mainly caused by eddies and meanders. Their formation process involves an important contribution from energy transfer by barotropic instability. They occur along the entire DWBC pathway and introduce several recirculation gyres that result in a decorrelation of the DWBC transport at 26.5°N and 16°N, despite the fact that a considerable mean transport of 20 Sv connects the two latitudes. Water in the DWBC at 26.5°N is partly returned northward. Because the amount of water returned depends on the DWBC transport itself, a stronger DWBC does not necessarily lead to an increased amount of water that reaches 16°N. Along the pathway to 16°N, the transport signal is altered by a broad and temporally variable transit time distribution. Thus, advection in the DWBC cannot account for coherent AMOC changes on interannual timescales seen in the model. Plain Language Summary: The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation describes a northward flow of warm water close to the surface, while cold water of North Atlantic origin is transported to the south at depth. The resulting transport of heat to the north has a pronounced impact on the northern hemisphere climate and is therefore of major interest. An improved understanding of the deep flow can help to interpret past and future changes of the overturning circulation. In the subtropical North Atlantic this deep southward flow is believed to be less complex than in other regions and more confined to the western boundary. However, our results show that eddies with radii of several tens of kilometers and offshore shifts of the current impact the spreading of water. These circulation features introduce a large variety of pathways from 26.5°N to 16°N, two latitudes of long term measurements. Additionally, they cause parts of the southward transport toward 16°N to return northwards. As a result, transport changes are not propagated southward, although a strong mean flow connects the latitudes. Therefore, advection along the western boundary can not explain the modeled similarity of overturning transport changes at both latitudes.
