Abstract

This study is about the dynamics of a sliding ladder leaning against a vertical wall. The results are understood by considering the motion divided in two parts: (i) for 0 = t = t[subscript s] with one degree of freedom, and (ii) for t > t[subscript s] with two degrees of freedom, where the separation is determined by the instance t[subscript s], when the ladder loses its contact with the wall. The observed experimental details are explained by appealing a simple model based on elementary notions of mechanics. We emphasize some features, such as a maximum of the x component of the velocity and of the acceleration of the centre of mass in the first part, and a minimum of the normal reaction force on the floor in the second.

Abstract

The realization of optimal recommendations for the nutrient balance of upland rice is an excellent strategy to increase the productivity and sustainability of the production system, especially in soils with limiting conditions for cultivation. The objective of the study was to evaluate the behavior of upland rice cultivars (ANa 9005CL, ANa 8001, AN Cambará and BRS A502), by foliar fertilization (MaxiZinc®, Booster® and Broadacre®) in the first year under dryland conditions in Vilhena-RO. The experimental design adopted was a randomized block design (BCT), with four cultivars and two levels of micronutrients and four repetitions, in a 4 × 2 factorial scheme. The production components evaluated showed statistically non-significant means for the foliar fertilizer factor, except for the number of spikes per panicle, for which there was a significant difference with an 8% increase in the cultivar ANA 8001 in relation to the other cultivars evaluated. Although the cultivar BRS A502 had fewer spikelets per panicle, the number of panicles per m2 compensated for this and ensured statistical equality in yield. The cultivar ANa 8001 produced the best results in terms of productivity and physical quality of the grains, under the edaphoclimatic conditions of the region. Abstract

Objective: Alternatives to conventional acute hospitalizations have been particularly useful during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, little is known on the management and outcomes of COVID-19 in older patient admitted to non-acute settings. The main aim of this study was to determine the effect of geriatrics syndromes on functional outcomes in older COVID-19 patients cared in sub-acute units. Methods: Prospective multicenter observational cohort study of patients aged 65 years and older with COVID-19, admitted to sub-acute units in Italy and Spain. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to test the association between geriatric syndromes and other clinical variables, and the functional status at discharge, defined by a Barthel Index > = 80. Results: A total of 158 patients were included in the study with a median age of 82 [Interquartile Range 81, 83]; of these 102 (65%) patients had a Barthel Index ≥ 80 at discharge. In the main multivariable logistic regression model a higher severity of frailty-measured with the Clinical Frailty Scale—(OR 0.30; CI 0.18–0.47), and the presence of delirium (OR 0.04; CI 0.00–0.35) at admission were associated with lower odds of a higher functional status at discharge. Other variables associated with lower functional status were female gender (OR 0.36; CI 0.13–0.96), and a higher number of comorbidities (OR 0.48; CI 0.26–0.82). Conclusion: The study reports a relatively high prevalence of functional recovery for older COVID-19 patients admitted to sub-acute units. Additionally, it underlines the importance of targeting geriatrics syndromes, in particular frailty and delirium, for their possible effects on functional recovery.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the application methods of brassinosteroids (BR) as an alternative production system to improve plant growth and morpho-physiological characteristics of dry bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), soya bean (Glycine max (L.)), and groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.). Trials were laid out in a complete randomized block design, arranged in a 4 x 2 factorial design. Brassinosteroids (100 g) treatments followed preventative and corrective treatments, where the dry bean, soya bean, and groundnut (three legumes) seeds were treated with BR; BR through the foliar application, soil drenching BR, and the control (with no BR treatment). The effect time of BR treatment was two and four weeks. Results showed that BR significantly improved the yield and morpho-physiological characteristics of all legume crops in this study. The improvement of the morpho-physiological characteristics was attributed to the morphological and physiological parameters, where the increase in plant height, seedling fresh mass, seedling dry mass, root fresh mass, and root dry mass were ascribed to morphological parameters; photosynthetic and chlorophyll content parameters were ascribed to physiological parameters. Interestingly, the foliar application method was significantly (P = 0.05) better than the control in all parameters. Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate complete blood count (CBC) parameters in the first week of life as predictive biomarkers for the development of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Methods: Multicenter, prospective, observational study of a cohort of preterm infants born with gestational age (GA) < 32 weeks or birth weight < 1500 g in eight Portuguese neonatal intensive care units. All demographic, clinical, and laboratory data from the first week of life were collected. Univariate logistic regression was used to assess risk factors for ROP and then multivariate regression was performed. Results: A total of 455 infants were included in the study. The median GA was 29.6 weeks, and the median birth weight was 1295 g. One hundred and seventy-two infants (37.8%) developed ROP. Median values of erythrocytes (p < 0.001), hemoglobin (p < 0.001), hematocrit (p < 0.001), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (p < 0.001), lymphocytes (p = 0.035), and platelets (p = 0.003) of the group of infants diagnosed with ROP any stage were lower than those without ROP. Mean corpuscular volume (MCV) (p = 0.044), red blood cell distribution width (RDW) (p < 0.001), erythroblasts (p < 0.001), neutrophils (p = 0.030), neutrophils-lymphocytes ratio (p = 0.028), and basophils (p = 0.003) were higher in the ROP group. Higher values of MCV, erythroblasts, and basophils remained significantly associated with ROP after multivariate regression. Conclusion: In our cohort, the increase in erythroblasts, MCV, and basophils in the first week of life was significantly and independently associated with the development of ROP. Abstract

Activated-sludge is the most widely used biological process to remove pollutants from wastewater worldwide, mainly due to its economic advantages. Bacteria sum up around 95 % of the total microbial community of the activated-sludge, being responsible for most of the water depuration. Filamentous bacteria are normal components of these artificial ecosystems but their excessive growth leads to potential problems, mainly on the sludge settling (filamentous bulking) or on the formation of scums (filamentous foaming), dramatically reducing the efficiency of the wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). Rhodococcus erythropolis is a gram-positive filamentous bacterium previously identified as one of the sources of foams in activated-sludge. The present work aimed at isolating and characterizing phages infecting R. erythropolis, using sewage water and mixed liquor from an urban WWTP as phage source. Two phages were isolated (one from mixed liquor and the other from sewage) and further characterized genetically and biologically. The TEM analysis revealed that both phages belong to the siphovirus morphotype but with different sizes. The one step growth curve, carried at 28 °C in LB medium, revealed that the Rhodococcus phage isolated from mixed liquor and the one isolated from sewage have significant differences with latent periods of 110 min and 35 min, respectively, and burst sizes of 5 PFU/infected and 106 PFU/infected cell, respectively. Both phages were stable between 4 and 28 °C and between pH values from 7 to 10, which suggests good stability in the WWTP environment. Moreover, phages were able to maintain a R. erytropolis suspension at low levels for up to 30 h post-infection, using MOIs of 0.1, 0.5, and 1. Infection with the mixed liquor phage, maintained the bacterial reduction for 48 h in all MOIs tested.
