The study was to establish a novel classification of the morphological characteristics of fibula anterior-inferior margin (FAIM), which was reported in few studies. The 501 images with three-dimensional computed tomography (3D CT) reconstruction were reviewed retrospectively. The width, height, thickness, long axis, short axis, and lateral malleolus angle were measured. The FAIM was divided into Angular, Flat, and Arc. The Flat has no distinct fibular obscure tubercles (FOT). The short axis of Angular and Arc were more significant than the Flat (P < 0. 05). The height of left was larger than the right, but short axis was less than it (P < 0.05). The height and short axis of males were larger than the females (P < 0.05). A novel classification (the Angular, Flat and Arc) of FAIM was identified based on lateral malleolus morphology, and it suggested that not all have obvious FOT. Level Ⅲ, retrospective study. Objective: The purpose of this study was to present the classification of navicular bones and the anatomical basis for the diagnosis and treatment of navicular fractures of the foot. Method: 351 computed tomographic (CT) images of the navicular bone were analyzed and classified. The navicular bone's anatomical morphology was measured by three independent researchers in each type. Analysis and recording of the measurement results followed. Result: Navicular bones were assorted into three types: I shape(37.04%), II shape(54.41%), and III shape(8.55%). The left and right sides did not differ in any appreciable ways, except ab, bc, and ∠abc (P < 0.05); And all data were statistically different between men and women except for ∠abc (p > 0.05). Summary: Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) is a highly heterogeneous disease, exhibiting diverse subtypes according to the characteristics of tumour cells. The immunophenotype is one of the aspects acquired routinely through flow cytometry in the diagnosis of AML. Here, we characterized the antigen expression in paediatric AML cases across both morphological and molecular genetic subgroups. We discovered a subgroup of patients with unfavourable prognosis that can be immunologically characterized, irrespective of morphological FAB results or genetic aberrations. Cox regression analysis unveiled key antigens influencing the prognosis of AML patients. In terms of underlying genotypes, we observed that the antigenic profiles and outcomes of one specific group, primarily composed of CBFA2T3::GLIS2 and FUS::ERG, were analogous to the reported RAM phenotype. Purpose: The aim of our study is to examine the morphometry of the P1 segment of the posterior cerebral artery (P1) and the posterior communicating artery (PcomA) and to present a descriptive classification according to morphometric findings. Methods: 340 hemispheres from 170 cadavers were included. The outer diameters of P1 and PcomA were measured with ImageJ software. Then, the configurations of the posterior cerebral artery were revealed as fetal, adult and transitional. The findings were correlated with the demographic information of the cadavers such as gender, body mass index (BMI), age. Results: According to the morphometric findings, 83.75%, 13.85% and 2.40% of the posterior cerebral arteries were found to be adult, fetal and transitional, respectively. The fetal type was more common in cadavers aged 60 years and older (13.73%) compared to the 18–39 and 40–59 age groups. In addition, P1 and PcomA diameters also increased with age. Fetal and transtional types showed a similar low distribution in people with low (< 18.5), normal (18.5–24.9), overweight (25–29.9) and obese (> 30) BMI, whereas adult type was found in cadavers with a normal BMI of 140/303. Conclusion: We believe that the findings of our study will contribute to the planning of neurointerventional procedures, the development of endovascular devices, the success of invasive procedures and the reduction of complications. Summary: Oocyte cytoplasmic evaluation is based on homogeneity and granular appearance. Our study investigated if a granular cytoplasm, highly heterogeneous, would affect oocyte competence in bovine. In two experiments, bovine cumulus–oocyte complexes (COCs) with homogeneous cytoplasm (control, CC) and granulated cytoplasm (granular, GC) were selected from a regular pool of COCs. Experiment 1 was performed with slaughterhouse ovaries, and Experiment 2 was carried out in Girolando COCs obtained from ovum pick-up. Granular oocytes had higher caspase 3 levels (66.17 ± 11.61 vs 172.08 ± 16.95, P < 0.01) and similar GAP junction activity (5.64 ± 0.45 vs 6.29 ± 0.29). ZAR1 relative mRNA amount was lower in granular oocytes (178.27 ± 151.63 vs 0.89 ± 0.89, P = 0.01) and no effect was detected for MATER , PPP2R1A , ENY2 , IGF2R , and BMP15 genes. Despite molecular differences, no detrimental effect was detected on oocyte competence in GC oocytes. Cleavage (Experiment 1: 59.52 ± 7.21% vs 59.79 ± 6.10% and Experiment 2: 68.88 ± 4.82 vs 74.41 ± 5.89%) and blastocyst (Experiment 1: 29.28 ± 4.14% vs 23.15 ± 2.96% and Experiment 2: 21.11 ± 3.28% vs 21.02 ± 6.08%) rates were similar between CC and GC (Experiments 1 and 2, respectively). Post-transfer embryo development revealed that pregnancy (CC: 24.27 ± 9.70% vs GC: 26.31 ± 7.23%) and calving (23.68% vs 33.33%) rates and fetal growth were not affected by the presence of cytoplasmic granules. Our results demonstrated that oocytes with granular cytoplasm present equivalent efficiency for IVF and calf production compared with homogenous cytoplasm oocytes. This could be observed through similar cleavage, blastocyst rates, and fetal growth development. Many factors, such as the resistance to pesticides and a lack of knowledge of the morphology and molecular structure of malaria vectors, have made it more challenging to eradicate malaria in numerous malaria-endemic areas of the globe. The primary goal of this review is to discuss malaria vector control methods and the significance of identifying species in vector control initiatives. This was accomplished by reviewing methods of molecular identification of malaria vectors and genetic marker classification in relation to their use for species identification. Due to its specificity and consistency, molecular identification is preferred over morphological identification of malaria vectors. Enhanced molecular capacity for species identification will improve mosquito characterization, leading to accurate control strategies/treatment targeting specific mosquito species, and thus will contribute to malaria eradication. It is crucial for disease epidemiology and surveillance to accurately identify the Plasmodium spp. that are causing malaria in patients. The capacity for disease surveillance will be significantly increased by the development of more accurate, precise, automated, and high-throughput diagnostic techniques. In conclusion, although morphological identification is quick and achievable at a reduced cost, molecular identification is preferred for specificity and sensitivity. Optical microscopy is the gold standard technique used to confirm the diagnosis of scabies. Multiple diagnostic features of the pathogen Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis (S. scabiei) can be identified under a microscope and classified into 3 categories: mites, eggs and fecal pellets. However, mite and eggshell fragments can also be observed, which have been ignored in the 2020 International Alliance for the Control of Scabies (IACS) Criteria and by most researchers. In this study, we propose a novel morphological classification method that classifies multiple diagnostic features into 5 categories and 7 subcategories. Our results revealed that 65.2% (1893 of 2896) of the positive cases were confirmed through the identification of mites, eggs or fecal pellets, whereas up to 34.6% (1003 of 2896) of the positive cases were confirmed through the identification of mite or eggshell fragments. Therefore, the important diagnostic values of mite and eggshell fragments should be emphasized. Importantly, for the first time, mite and eggshell fragments were classified into 7 subcategories, some of which are easily ignored or confused with contaminating artefacts. We believe that this novel morphological classification method will be beneficial for operator training in interpreting slides and in improving the 2020 IACS Criteria.

Results from the second experiment showed that only BCB− oocytes had a significantly lower maturation rate (28%) compared to the control (63%) and BCB+ oocytes (59%) (p<0.001). These findings showed that COCs with high morphological characteristics had higher developmental ability compared to COCs with low morphology. The BCB-staining in high-quality oocytes did not have a significant impact on their maturation ability compared to a control group, but it might be useful for selecting developmentally competent oocytes with low morphology characteristics. The human soleus muscle has attracted attention in the fields of sport science, rehabilitation medicine, etc. for improving exercise performance in training, preventing injuries, and rehabilitation. The sagittal tendon plate of the soleus muscle is particularly important in rehabilitation. Few studies, however, have evaluated the shape of the sagittal tendon plate in the human soleus muscle in detail and attempted to classify its variations based on its morphology. In this study, we conducted a detailed analysis of the morphology of the sagittal tendon plates in soleus muscle specimens from Japanese cadavers and constructed a morphology-based classification system and evaluated their frequencies of occurrence. First, the specimens were divided into those with a sagittal tendon plate that was visible on the anterior surface (pennate muscle group) and those without (non-pennate muscle group). Next, based on the "number" and "breadth" of the sagittal tendon plates, the pennate muscle group specimens were further classified into four classes: Class I (one tendon, thin), Class II (one tendon, slightly broad), Class III (one tendon, very broad), and Class IV (two tendons, thin). Subsequently, the specimens were further divided into three types based on the position where the sagittal tendon plate joined the Achilles tendon: median tendon type, lateral tendon type, and medial tendon type (a total 13 divisions). When 458 Japanese soleus muscle specimens were classified into these divisions, the occurrence frequencies of Class I-IV were 80.57 %, 4.59 %, 5.46 %, and 1.09 %, respectively. In Class I, the median tendon type was more frequent than the lateral and medial tendon types, accounting for 48.47 % overall. The classification types of the sagittal tendon plate and their respective occurrence frequencies shown in this study are expected to serve as fundamental data in implementing rehabilitation of soleus muscle. Purpose: This study aimed to explore the association of preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) tumor morphological classification with early recurrence (ER) and overall survival (OS) after radical surgery of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Patients and Methods: A retrospective analysis of 296 patients with HCC who underwent radical resection was performed. On the basis of LI-RADS, tumor imaging morphology was classified into three types. The clinical imaging features, ER, and survival rates of three types were compared. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were conducted to identify prognostic factors associated with OS and ER after hepatectomy for HCC. Results: There were 167 tumors of type 1, 95 of type 2, and 34 of type 3. In patients with type 3 HCC, postoperative mortality and ER were significantly higher than in patients with type 1 and type 2 (55.9% versus 32.6% versus 27.5% and 52.9% versus 33.7% versus 28.7%). In multivariate analysis, the LI-RADS morphological type was a stronger risk factor for predicting poor OS [hazard ratio (HR) 2.77, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.59–4.85, P < 0.001] and ER (HR 2.14, 95% CI 1.24–3.70, P = 0.007). A subgroup analysis revealed that type 3 was associated with poor OS and ER in > 5 cm cases but not in < 5 cm cases. Conclusions: ER and OS of patients with HCC undergoing radical surgery can be predicted using the preoperative tumor LI-RADS morphological type, which could help to select personalized treatment plans for patients with HCC in the future. Infertility has become a common problem in global health, and unsurprisingly, many couples need medical assistance to achieve reproduction. Many human behaviors can lead to infertility, which is none other than unhealthy sperm. The important thing is that assisted reproductive techniques require selecting healthy sperm. Hence, machine learning algorithms are presented as the subject of this research to effectively modernize and make accurate standards and decisions in classifying sperm. In this study, we developed a deep learning fusion architecture called SwinMobile that combines the Shifted Windows Vision Transformer (Swin) and MobileNetV3 into a unified feature space and classifies sperm from impurities in the SVIA Subset-C. Swin Transformer provides long-range feature extraction, while MobileNetV3 is responsible for extracting local features. We also explored incorporating an autoencoder into the architecture for an automatic noise-removing model. Our model was tested on SVIA, HuSHem, and SMIDS. Comparison to the state-of-the-art models was based on F1-score and accuracy. Our deep learning results accurately classified sperm and performed well in direct comparisons with previous approaches despite the datasets' different characteristics. We compared the model from Xception on the SVIA dataset, the MC-HSH model on the HuSHem dataset, and Ilhan et al.'s model on the SMIDS dataset and the astonishing results given by our model. The proposed model, especially SwinMobile-AE, has strong classification capabilities that enable it to function with high classification results on three different datasets. We propose that our deep learning approach to sperm classification is suitable for modernizing the clinical world. Our work leverages the potential of artificial intelligence technologies to rival humans in terms of accuracy, reliability, and speed of analysis. The SwinMobile-AE method we provide can achieve better results than state-of-the-art, even for three different datasets. Our results were benchmarked by comparisons with three datasets, which included SVIA, HuSHem, and SMIDS, respectively (95.4% vs. 94.9%), (97.6% vs. 95.7%), and (91.7% vs. 90.9%). Thus, the proposed model can realize technological advances in classifying sperm morphology based on the evidential results with three different datasets, each having its characteristics related to data size, number of classes, and color space. Leptotrombidium (Acari: Trombiculidae) mites are carriers of Orientia tsutsugamushi, the bacterial pathogen causing scrub typhus in humans. Classification of Leptotrombidium is vital because limited mite species carry O. tsutsugamushi. Generally, Leptotrombidium at the larval stage (approximately 0.2 mm in size) are used for morphological identification. However, morphological identification is often challenging because it requires considerable skills and taxonomic expertise. In this study, we found that the full-length sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene varied among the significant Leptotrombidium. On the basis of these, we modified the canonical deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) barcoding method for animals by redesigning the primer set to be suitable for Leptotrombidium. Polymerase chain reaction with the redesigned primer set drastically increased the detection sensitivity, especially against Leptotrombidium scutellare (approximately 17% increase), one of the significant mites carrying O. tsutsugamushi. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the samples morphologically classified as L. scutellare and Leptotrombidium pallidum were further split into 3 and 2 distinct subclusters respectively. The mean genetic distance (p-distance) between L. scutellare and L. pallidum was 0.2147, whereas the mean distances within each species were 0.052 and 0.044, respectively. Within L. scutellare, the mean genetic distances between the 3 subclusters were 0.1626–0.1732, whereas the distances within each subcluster were 0.003–0.017. Within L. pallidum, the mean genetic distance between the 2 subclusters was 0.1029, whereas the distances within each subcluster were 0.010–0.013. The DNA barcoding uncovered a broad genetic diversity of Leptotrombidium, especially of L. scutellare and L. pallidum, the notable species carrying O. tsutsugamushi. We conclude that the DNA barcoding using our primers enables precise and detailed classification of Leptotrombidium and implies the existence of a subgenotype in Leptotrombidium that had not been found by morphological identification. The study purposed to examine the morphometry and morphology of crista galli in cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and apply a new analysis, supervised Machine Learning techniques to find the answers to research questions "Can sex be determined with crista galli morphometric measurements?" or "How effective are the crista galli morphometric measurements in determining sex?". Crista galli dimensions including anteroposterior, superoinferior, and laterolateral were measured and carried out on 200 healthy adult subjects (98 females; 102 males) aged between 18-79 years. Also, crista galli was classified with two methods called morphological types and Keros classification. In this study, the Chi-square test, Student's t-test, and Oneway ANOVA were performed. Additionally, Machine Learning techniques were applied. The means of the CGH, CGW, and CGL were found as 14.96 mm; 3.96 mm, and 12.76 mm in males, respectively. The same values were as 13.54 mm; 3.51 mm and 11.59±1.61 mm in females, respectively. The CG morphometric measurements of males were higher than those of females. There was a significant difference between sexes in terms of morphological classification type. Also, when the sex assignment of JRip was analyzed, out of 102 male instances 62 of them were correctly predicted, and for 98 female instances, 70 of them were correctly predicted according to their CG measurements. The JRip found the following classification rule for the given dataset: "if CGH<=14.4 then sex is female, otherwise sex is male". The accuracy of this rule is not high, but it gives an idea about the relationship between CG measurements and sex. Although the issue that CG morphometric measurements can be used in sex determination is still controversial, it was concluded in the analysis that CG morphometric measurements can be used in sex determination. Nowadays, lasers are routine tools in the widest range of materials processing, including welding of battery packs. The properties of the laser generated weld bead are crucial in determining the electrical and mechanical behavior of the joint. Here, we report on the identification of five morphological bead types, namely, Rosenthal, single wave, elongated, pre-humping, and humping morphologies and their systematic appearance over the laser power versus scanning speed plane. We prove that each type exhibits characteristic electrical and mechanical behavior that differ not only in the magnitude of relevant materials' properties, but also in their variability. We show for nickel-coated steel and uncoated DC01 cold rolled steel that the so-called single wave morphology is best suited for battery welding applications, since this morphology class concomitantly exhibits the lowest electrical resistance and the highest mechanical strength, both with a relatively small margin of error. Urban parks have significant cooling effects, which can both mitigate the urban heat is-land effect and are crucial to the sustainable development of the human habitat. Although studies have been conducted to explore the influence of urban park morphology on the cooling effect of parks, they are not sufficiently in depth. Therefore, this paper took 117 urban parks in the central city of Chengdu as the research objects based on the perspective of the quantitative classification of urban park morphology. Then, remote sensing interpretation, spatial statistics, and regression analysis were used, and the four indicators of cooling intensity, cooling distance, cooling area, and cooling efficiency of urban parks were integrated to explore the cooling effect of the different morphological types of urban parks. The results show that (1) urban parks in Chengdu could be divided into five categories, among which the cooling effect of round parks was the best, and the cooling efficiency was 0.7. (2) In terms of park cooling area, urban parks' area and perimeter thresholds were 30 ha and 4000 m, respectively. (3) When the area and perimeter of urban parks reached 70 ha and 3000 m, respectively, the increase in the cooling distance slowed down. (4) The cooling efficiency of the park was best when the shape index (indicating the complexity of the park boundaries) of the urban park was 2.8. The results of the study provide theoretical support for the intensive use of urban park green space and help the construction and promotion of a beautiful and livable park city in Chengdu. In conclusion, although morphological identification is quick and achievable at a reduced cost, molecular identification is preferred for specificity and sensitivity. To achieve the targeted malaria elimination goal, proper identification of vectors using accurate techniques for effective control measures should be prioritized.

White clover (Trifolium repens L.) is a perennial legume with various traits; it grows in temperate regions and has high potential as an ornamental plant. In the present study, four parental varieties (Ladino, Green Ice, William, and Dragon's Blood) of white clover were classified based on 11 morphological traits [plant form, leaf shape, leaf edge shape, upper lamina color, lower lamina color, white V mark, midrib color, leaf patterns (front and back), flower color, and peduncle color]. Based on these traits, two hybrids were selected as follows: Ladino × Green Ice [hereafter referred to as Jeju Hapiness-1 (JH-1)] and William × Dragon's Blood (JH-5). In addition, random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis was performed to confirm the molecular biological relationship between the parental varieties and hybrids. We confirmed to contain the polymorphic bands of the parental varieties at OPC13, OPD6, and OPG4 operon primers from JH-1, and at OPE10, OPG12, and OPH11 from JH-5. Further, the RAPD patterns from the hybrids were compared with the four parental varieties. A distinguishable RAPD pattern was identified in OPC13 and OPG4 from JH-1 and in OPG12 and OPH11 from JH-5. In addition, polymorphic DNA fragments in which the genetic relationship between the parental varieties and hybrids was confirmed were converted into sequence characterized amplified region (SCAR) markers. The morphological classification criteria, RAPD pattern, and SCAR marker are all considered useful for the classification and breeding of white clover and protecting varieties developed. Although the quality of the spermatozoa is a key factor for reproductive success, there is few information describing the sperm quality for most marine invertebrates, especially corals. Given the high mortality rates and several threats currently faced by coral reefs, ways of assessing coral spermatozoa viability are needed. Thus, in this study we proposed a morphological classification for coral spermatozoa using Mussismilia harttii as model. In addition, we evaluated the relationship of morphology with the percentage and duration of motility. Spermatozoa were first classified into two main morphological categories: normal and abnormal. Then, we classified morphological abnormalities in the head and flagellum together with proposing subcategories that better described it. In general, 68.77 ± 6.50% of the spermatozoa had their whole structure intact, while 31.23 ± 6.51% had morphological abnormalities. Most abnormalities were in the flagellum (five types in total), while only two abnormalities were located in the head. Coiled flagellum and shortened flagellum were the most representative abnormalities, accounting for 24% of the total detected. We observed that reduction of sperm motility is directly related to increased morphological abnormalities and they are influenced by the cell ageing. Our results reinforce how the characterization of sperm morphology can be a practical and useful tool that can help to better understand the effects of multiple stressors on coral reproduction. Purpose: To study the intraoperative complications and postoperative clinical outcomes in different types of posterior polar cataract (PPC) following phacoemulsification, based on morphological classification. Methods: All consecutive patients with PPC who underwent phacoemulsification during the study period from 2016 to 2019 were included and sub-grouped based on the morphological characteristics according to Daljit Singh's classification. Intraoperative complications such as posterior capsular rupture (PCR), vitreous loss, nucleus drop, and Postoperative best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) at day 1 and day 30 were documented. Results: A total of 388 eyes of 380 patients were included. Eighty nine (22.9%) eyes belonged to type 1, 135 (34.8%) belonged to type 2, 8 (2.1%) belonged to type 3, and 156 (40.2%) belonged to type 4. Thirty-five (9.3%) eyes had intraoperative PCR, with vitreous loss in 21 (60%) eyes, and nucleus/cortex drop in 5 (1.3%) eyes. Six (75%) eyes of type 3, 14 (10.04%) eyes of type 2, 12 (17.7%) eyes of type 4, and 3 (3.4%) eyes of type 1 PPC had PCR. PCR occurred more during the emulsification of the nucleus (18 cases, 51.4%). A significant correlation was seen between intraoperative PCR and type of PPC with a higher incidence in type 3 (P < 0.001). BCVA was found to be significantly worse on day 1 among patients with PCR compared to those who did not and improved well by day 30. Conclusion: PPC morphology is significantly co-related with the occurrence of PCR, emphasizing the need for careful grading of posterior polar cataracts in predicting the risk of intraoperative complications.

A clear understanding of the systemic differences between interacting languages is necessary to study the interaction of languages in the mind of a bilingual (multilingual) personality and improve the practice of teaching languages in a transcultural environment. If such languages belong to different morphological types, the method of determinant analysis can be proposed as an effective tool for methodological forecasting of negative interference. The goal set by the authors of the article is to establish cause-and-effect relationships between the systemic determinant of the language type and its particular specific features at the levels of phonetics, morphology and syntax. The object of the research is the agglutinative and inflectional types of languages that lie between the extreme manifestations of proximity and remoteness of individual minds. In their work, the authors rely on the systemic methodology of determinant typological analysis, developed in the 1960s-70s by the founder of modern systemic linguistics, Professor Gennady Prokopyevich Melnikov.

BackgroundPost-intubation tracheal laceration (PITL) is a rare condition (0.005% of intubations). The treatment of choice has traditionally been surgical repair. Following our first report in 2010 of treatment protocol tailored to a risk-stratified morphological classification there is now clear evidence that conservative therapy represents the gold standard in the majority of patients. In this paper we aim to validate our risk-stratified treatment protocol through the largest ever reported series of patients.MethodsThis retrospective analysis is based on a prospectively collected series (2003–2020) of 62 patients with PITL, staged and treated according to our revised morphological classification.ResultsFifty-five patients with Level I (#8), II (#36) and IIIA (#11) PITL were successfully treated conservatively. Six patients with Level IIIB injury and 1 patient with Level IV underwent a surgical repair of the trachea. No mortality was reported. Bronchoscopy confirmed complete healing in all patients by day 30. Statistical analysis showed age only to be a risk factor for PITL severity.ConclusionsOur previously proposed risk-stratified morphological classification has been validated as the major tool for defining the type of treatment in PITL.

Cockroaches are well-known pests and quarantined organisms worldwide. Due to morphological diversity and a lack of molecular data, their classification and identification are facing challenges. This study performed classification, identification, and DNA barcoding for cockroaches collected from China. Seventy-six samples were morphologically identified as seven species of two superfamilies that included Blattella germanica, Eublaberus posticus and Blaptica dubia belonging to the superfamily Blaberoidea, and Periplaneta americana, Periplaneta lateralis, Periplaneta fuliginosa and Periplaneta australasiae belonging to the superfamily Blattoidea. Based on sequence alignments of nine ribosomal and mitochondrial genes across the order Blattaria retrieved from GenBank, rDNA ITS2-517 bp and mtDNA 16S-327 bp were screened as candidates for molecular identification. Universal primers were designed for PCR amplification, cloning, and sequencing of the 37 representative samples. Sequence alignments and phylogeny analysis showed that both ITS2 and 16S confirmed samples 1-9, 20-24, and 25-29 as B. germanica, P. americana, and P. lateralis, respectively; only 16S (not ITS2) confirmed samples 10-14, 15-19, 30-34, and 35-37 as E. posticus, Blap. dubia, P. fuliginosa, and P. australasiae, respectively, indicating that 16S was a better target than ITS2 for molecular identification of cockroaches. Conservative motif and divergence analysis further revealed that ITS2 sequences vary significantly among different taxa, whereas 16S sequences are relatively conserved. There is an obvious barcoding gap between maximum intraspecific divergence and minimum interspecific divergence (2.57 % vs. 5.62 %) for ITS2, but not for 16S (6.15 % vs. 2.63 %). An improved classification of the origin of lake depressions due to geological, geomorphological factors and climate change is a requirement of the day in Mongolia. We present a new holistic classification using comparative analysis method. This study suggests a two-tier classification in terms of origin and morphological feature of the lakes, which replaces the previous one-tier classification. Mongolia has identified 11 main and 26 subtypes of origin, and 8 main types of morphology, based on the features of 32 lake depressions. The result of the study shows that the lakes of Mongolia developed in 3 stages, first, affected by tectonic movement, followed by glacial and finally, owing to other exogenic factors. This morphological classification study will create the basic conditions for preserving and using these lakes more efficiently and ecologically in the future by making the classification of the origin of lake depression.

Infertility has become a common problem in global health, and unsurprisingly, many couples need medical assistance to achieve reproduction. Many human behaviors can lead to infertility, which is none other than unhealthy sperm. The important thing is that assisted reproductive techniques require selecting healthy sperm. Hence, machine learning algorithms are presented as the subject of this research to effectively modernize and make accurate standards and decisions in classifying sperm. In this study, we developed a deep learning fusion architecture called SwinMobile that combines the Shifted Windows Vision Transformer (Swin) and MobileNetV3 into a unified feature space and classifies sperm from impurities in the SVIA Subset-C. Swin Transformer provides long-range feature extraction, while MobileNetV3 is responsible for extracting local features. We also explored incorporating an autoencoder into the architecture for an automatic noise-removing model. Our model was tested on SVIA, HuSHem, and SMIDS. Comparison to the state-of-the-art models was based on F1-score and accuracy. Our deep learning results accurately classified sperm and performed well in direct comparisons with previous approaches despite the datasets’ different characteristics. We compared the model from Xception on the SVIA dataset, the MC-HSH model on the HuSHem dataset, and Ilhan et al.’s model on the SMIDS dataset and the astonishing results given by our model. The proposed model, especially SwinMobile-AE, has strong classification capabilities that enable it to function with high classification results on three different datasets. We propose that our deep learning approach to sperm classification is suitable for modernizing the clinical world. Our work leverages the potential of artificial intelligence technologies to rival humans in terms of accuracy, reliability, and speed of analysis. The SwinMobile-AE method we provide can achieve better results than state-of-the-art, even for three different datasets. Our results were benchmarked by comparisons with three datasets, which included SVIA, HuSHem, and SMIDS, respectively (95.4% vs. 94.9%), (97.6% vs. 95.7%), and (91.7% vs. 90.9%). Thus, the proposed model can realize technological advances in classifying sperm morphology based on the evidential results with three different datasets, each having its characteristics related to data size, number of classes, and color space.

Urban parks have significant cooling effects, which can both mitigate the urban heat is-land effect and are crucial to the sustainable development of the human habitat. Although studies have been conducted to explore the influence of urban park morphology on the cooling effect of parks, they are not sufficiently in depth. Therefore, this paper took 117 urban parks in the central city of Chengdu as the research objects based on the perspective of the quantitative classification of urban park morphology. Then, remote sensing interpretation, spatial statistics, and regression analysis were used, and the four indicators of cooling intensity, cooling distance, cooling area, and cooling efficiency of urban parks were integrated to explore the cooling effect of the different morphological types of urban parks. The results show that (1) urban parks in Chengdu could be divided into five categories, among which the cooling effect of round parks was the best, and the cooling efficiency was 0.7. (2) In terms of park cooling area, urban parks’ area and perimeter thresholds were 30 ha and 4000 m, respectively. (3) When the area and perimeter of urban parks reached 70 ha and 3000 m, respectively, the increase in the cooling distance slowed down. (4) The cooling efficiency of the park was best when the shape index (indicating the complexity of the park boundaries) of the urban park was 2.8. The results of the study provide theoretical support for the intensive use of urban park green space and help the construction and promotion of a beautiful and livable park city in Chengdu.

Abstract The Cambrian strata in the North China Platform are fully exposed. A wide variety of carbonate oncoids with different shapes occur in the Xuzhuang and Zhangxia formations (Miaolingian Series) from six Cambrian sections in the study area. A comprehensive study involving outcrop description, microscopic observation, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and carbon and oxygen isotope analysis is conducted to determine the facies, morphology, internal structure, and geochemical properties of the oncoids. The oncoids are divided into six types based on their morphology and internal structure. Microscopic and ultrastructural observations reveal typical microbial fossils (Girvanella) and microbially-related sediments (framboidal pyrite), indicating the biogenicity of the oncoids. Additionally, the XRD and carbon and oxygen isotope analysis results suggest that the formational environments of these oncoids are different due to terrestrial influences. Statistical data on the oncoids from the six sections show that there are obvious differences in the types of oncoids and the proportions of different varieties in each section. The spatial differences in the oncoid morphologies are associated with different palaeogeographic settings. The rough oncoid growth patterns developed in nearshore environments were influenced by terrigenous debris and steep terrain, whereas the delicate oncoid growth patterns developed in offshore environments were less affected by terrestrial factors and were featured by more stable depositional processes related to microbial mats.

Endoplasmic reticulum stress (ER stress) is a condition that is defined by abnormal accumulation of unfolded proteins. It plays an important role in maintaining cellular protein, lipid, and ion homeostasis. By triggering the unfolded protein response (UPR) under ER stress, cells restore homeostasis or undergo apoptosis. Chronic ER stress is implicated in many human diseases. Despite extensive studies on related signaling mechanisms, reliable image biomarkers for ER stress remain lacking. To address this deficiency, we have validated a morphological image biomarker for ER stress and have developed a deep learning-based assay to enable automated detection and analysis of this marker for screening studies. Specifically, ER under stress exhibits abnormal morphological patterns that feature ring-shaped structures called whorls (WHs). Using a highly specific chemical probe for unfolded and aggregated proteins, we find that formation of ER whorls is specifically associated with the accumulation of the unfolded and aggregated proteins. This confirms that ER whorls can be used as an image biomarker for ER stress. To this end, we have developed ER-WHs-Analyzer, a deep learning-based image analysis assay that automatically recognizes and localizes ER whorls similarly as human experts. It does not require laborious manual annotation of ER whorls for training of deep learning models. Importantly, it reliably classifies different patterns of ER whorls induced by different ER stress drugs. Overall, our study provides mechanistic insights into morphological patterns of ER under stress as well as an image biomarker assay for screening studies to dissect related disease mechanisms and to accelerate related drug discoveries. It demonstrates the effectiveness of deep learning in recognizing and understanding complex morphological phenotypes of ER.

Morphological classification of human sperm heads is a key technology for diagnosing male infertility. Due to its sparse representation and learning capability, dictionary learning has shown remarkable performance in human sperm head classification. To promote the discriminability of the classification model, a novel local constraint and label embedding multi-layer dictionary learning model called LCLM-MDL is proposed in this study. Based on the multi-layer dictionary learning framework, two dictionaries are built on the basis of Laplacian regularized constraint and label embedding term in each layer, and the two dictionaries are approximated to each other as much as possible, so as to well exploit the nonlinear structure and discriminability features of the morphology of human sperm heads. In addition, to promote the robustness of the model, the asymmetric Huber loss is adopted in the last layer of LCLM-MDL, which approximates the misclassification error by using the absolute error function. Pine wilt disease, caused by Bursaphelenchus xylophilus and Bursaphelenchus mucnatus, is a serious quarantined disease. Arboreal nematode-trapping fungi of Pinus spp. are effective predators on nematodes and have strong host adaptability. The development of these fungal resources may be an effective way to control pine wood nematodes. We collected 515 samples of pine wilt disease from the areas of Ninghai City (Zhejiang province), Shuangbai County (Yunnan province), and Daxing'anling (Heilongjiang province), China. Through isolation, culture and identification, 6 species of nematode-trapping fungi (Arthrobotrys cladodesr, A. oligospora, A. musiformis, A. dendroides, Dactylellina ellipsospora, Monacrosporium thaumasium) were identified for predation against B. xylophilus, and 9 species (Arthrobotrys dactyloides, A. cladodesr A. oligospora A. dendroides, Dactylellina ellipsospora, Dactylella asthenopaga, D. leptospora, Arthrobotrys superba, Monacrosporium drechseri) were identified for predation against B. mucnatus. This study provides information in the classification of arboreal predator nematodes and provides an important basis for future biological control of pine wood nematodes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper contains the results of studying ceramics from Chekalino IV site located on the Sok River in the Samara region. It is a reference monument in the development of the issues of the Early Neolithic of the Volga region. The analysis involved materials of 1990s publications, as well as the new excavations of 2007, which have not been published in detail. The study was conducted with the use of a complex approach, including the morphological classification of ceramics; serial radiocarbon dating of complexes and groups of Neolithic ceramics; studying of pottery technology using the A. A. Bobrinsky's method based on binocular microscopy, traseology and experiment in the form of physical modelling. Ceramic materials from the following territories of Eastern Europe were analyzed within the framework of a unified research approach and the application of similar methods: Northern Caspian region, steppe Lower Volga region, Middle Volga region, Cis-Kama region, Sura-Moksha interfluve, and Mari Volga region. Of particular importance is the inclusion of materials from one of the main monuments of Elshanka culture in this source database. New radiocarbon dating results obtained on the basis of materials from the site are introduced into scientific discourse. The paper features an interpretation of obtained results and establishes the cultural and chronological position of Chekalino IV site within the system of Neolithic antiquities of the Volga region.

In this study, the spray structure of simulant gel propellant was analyzed morphologically and qualitatively to understand the basic characteristics of the gelled jet disintegration process in a shear coaxial environment. Categorization of breakup process was conducted based on the water jet breakup theory with generalized Reynolds number of the Herschel–Bulkley model and aerodynamic Weber number. Similar breakup types and disintegration process comparable to Newtonian fluids were depicted. However, the disintegration development was relatively slow compared to Newtonian cases, and the spray structures were quite different especially in fiber-type breakup due to its inherent viscosity change and viscoelastic properties. In the case of gel propellant, a strong Reynolds number dependency was observed under a certain critical value of the generalized Reynolds number, whereas beyond this value, breakup regime can be categorized with only the Weber number as in Newtonian cases. The border of Reynolds number dependency was shown at approximately Re gen = 200 for all simulant gel contents cases considered in this study. The Weber number ranges for the three breakup modes (Rayleigh type, membrane type and fiber type) were found, and a new breakup mode showing a more intricate gel disintegration than the Newtonian one is proposed.. A systematic review was performed to summarize the scientific evidence and critically evaluate the effects of cryopreservation on sperm morphology in freshwater fish, and to assess the methodologies for sperm morphology classification. The search strategy was applied to four electronic databases (CAB Direct, Pub Med, Scopus, and ISI Web of Science). The main inclusion criteria involved studies on semen from freshwater fish subjected to the cryopreservation process and evaluation of sperm quality through morphology. The risk of bias was assessed with respect to randomization, allocation concealment, blinding, incomplete outcome data, and selective reporting. A total of 6 publications reporting sperm cryopreservation from 4 species with a total 74 fish individuals were included in this review. A high methodological variability among the results of the studies was observed due to the species-specific protocols and diversity of freshwater fish species studied. All included studies reported negative effects of cryopreservation on sperm quality, especially morphology, highlighting the increase in incidence of sperm abnormalities. However, only five studies statistically compared abnormalities between groups (fresh and cryopreserved sperm). Our results suggest the need to elaborate on a new morphological classification of fish spermatozoa, by considering the structure and physiology of fish sperm. This classification should be developed based on the sperm characterization and observing damage caused by different cryopreservation protocols.

For physical-based compression therapeutic modalities, especially compression stockings (CSs), their pressure performances are necessarily evaluated by the standardized cylinder leg mannequins before biological applications. However, the insufficient pressure supply caused by morphological shape diversities between circular leg mannequins and irregular bio-bodies limits the clinical effectiveness and user compliance of CSs. Therefore, an operable and efficiency approach for optimization bio-design and digital development of CSs with enhanced compression performances needs to be proposed. The present study has adopted three-dimensional (3D) body scanning and reverse engineering technologies for lower limb cross-sectional geometric characterization and morphological classification. The irregularity of biological leg circumferential slices was determined and clustered as four levels relating to individual curvature variations. Sequentially, a new pressure prediction model was constructed through characterized geometric variations for bio-based bodies, then its acceptability was validated with good agreement by wearing trials (mean prediction accuracy was 2.53 ± 0.52 mmHg). Thus, the digital pressure reshaped development guidance was obtained based on the classified irregular levels and established pressure prediction models. Many factors, such as the resistance to pesticides and a lack of knowledge of the morphology and molecular structure of malaria vectors, have made it more challenging to eradicate malaria in numerous malaria-endemic areas of the globe. The primary goal of this review is to discuss malaria vector control methods and the significance of identifying species in vector control initiatives. This was accomplished by reviewing methods of molecular identification of malaria vectors and genetic marker classification in relation to their use for species identification. Due to its specificity and consistency, molecular identification is preferred over morphological identification of malaria vectors. Enhanced molecular capacity for species identification will improve mosquito characterization, leading to accurate control strategies/treatment targeting specific mosquito species, and thus will contribute to malaria eradication. It is crucial for disease epidemiology and surveillance to accurately identify the Plasmodium spp. that are causing malaria in patients. The capacity for disease surveillance will be significantly increased by the development of more accurate, precise, automated, and high-throughput diagnostic techniques. In conclusion, although morphological identification is quick and achievable at a reduced cost, molecular identification is preferred for specificity and sensitivity. To achieve the targeted malaria elimination goal, proper identification of vectors using accurate techniques for effective control measures should be prioritized.

The full morphology of single neurons is indispensable for understanding cell types, the basic building blocks in brains. Projecting trajectories are critical to extracting biologically relevant information from neuron morphologies, as they provide valuable information for both connectivity and cell identity. We developed an artificial intelligence method, deep sequential model (DSM), to extract concise, cell-type-defining features from projections across brain regions. DSM achieves more than 90% accuracy in classifying 12 major neuron projection types without compromising performance when spatial noise is present. Such remarkable robustness enabled us to efficiently manage and analyze several major full-morphology data sources, showcasing how characteristic long projections can define cell identities. The shape of a neuron can reveal interesting properties about its function. Therefore, morphological neuron characterization can contribute to a better understanding of how the brain works. However, one of the great challenges of neuroanatomy is the definition of morphological properties that can be used for categorizing neurons. This paper proposes a new methodology for neuron morphological analysis by considering different hierarchies of the dendritic tree for characterizing and categorizing neuronal cells. The methodology consists in using different strategies for decomposing the dendritic tree along its hierarchies, allowing the identification of relevant parts (possibly related to specific neuronal functions) for classification tasks. A set of more than 5000 neurons corresponding to 10 classes were examined with supervised classification algorithms based on this strategy. It was found that classification accuracies similar to those obtained by using whole neurons can be achieved by considering only parts of the neurons.
