Abstract

We present a 128-channel analogue front-end chip, SCT128A-HC, for readout of silicon strip detectors employed in the inner tracking detectors of the LHC experiment. The chip is produced in the radiation hard DMILL technology. The architecture of the chip and critical design issues are discussed. The performance of the chip has been evaluated in details in the test bench and is presented in the paper. The chip is used to read out prototype analogue modules compatible in size, functionality and performance with the ATLAS SCT base line modules. Several full size detector modules equipped with SCT128A-HC chips has been built and tested successfully in the lab with [Beta] particles as well as in the test beam. The results concerning the signal-to-noise ratio, noise occupancy, efficiency and spatial resolution are presented. The radiation hardness issues are discussed.

Abstract

The Legislative Decree n.214 dated 19-9-2005 introduced in Italy the Council Directive 2000/29/CE, as amended by the Council Directive 2002/89/CE. The aforesaid Decree enforced protective measures against the introduction and spread into the Community of organisms harmful to plants/plants products. In the annexes of the Decree, there are 20 phytopathogenic bacteria. The key measures foreseen in the Decree are strengthened plant health checks, carried out by the regional Plant Health Services (SFR) at the place of production and on imported/exported plants/plant products. In this respect, laboratory analyses are essential for the detection of latent infections. Currently, the analyses are carried out in laboratories belonging to SFR or, under the supervision of each SFR, in private or public laboratories. The Decree 214/2005 lays down a national laboratory network (art.53) to support SFR in performing their analyses. The network operates under the supervision of a central Phytosanitary Committee (art.52). In 2006, a special inquiry showed that SFR are characterised by different needs as they perform different bacteriological analyses for the crops grown in their areas and for the checks of other materials imported through the relevant points of entry. Nevertheless three quarantine bacteria resulted to be of common interest. The national laboratory network, laid down by the Decree 214/2005, should take into account the demand for analyses expressed by the SFR, that have already provided useful data regarding their bacteriological needs. This national laboratory network could provide the SFR with an effective support also in the control of regulated non quarantine pests.

Abstract

The assessment of radiation damage to electronics is a complex process and requires a detailed description of the full particle energy spectra, as well as a clear characterization of the quantities used to predict radiation damage. FLUKA, a multi-purpose particle interaction and transport code, is capable of calculating proton-proton and heavy ion collisions at LHC energies and beyond. It correctly describes the entire hadronic and electromagnetic particle cascade initiated by secondary particles from TeV energies down to thermal neutrons, and provides direct scoring capabilities essential to estimate in detail the possible risk of radiation damage to electronics. This paper presents the FLUKA capabilities for applications related to radiation damage to electronics, providing benchmarking examples and showing the practical applications of FLUKA at CERN facilities such as CNGS and LHC. Related applications range from the study of device effects, the detailed characterization of the radiation field and radiation monitor calibration, to the input requirements for important mitigation studies including shielding, relocation or other options.

Abstract

A serious outbreak of Flavescence dorée was reported in Piemonte, North-Western Italy, in 1998 and since then the disease has compromized the economy of this traditional wine-growing area, even following the application of compulsory insecticide treatments to control Scaphoideus titanus, vector of the causal phytoplasma. Affected vines show severe symptoms, varying according to cultivar, and are rogued to reduce disease spread. Following winter and pruning, a previously affected vine may appear symptomless (recovered) and free of phytoplasmas in both its aerial as well as root system, even by nested PCR assays. Since 1998 homogenous data on the incidence of newly infected, healthy or recovered plants, productivity, presence of vectors and treatment schedules have been collected in seven severely affected vineyards of Southern Piemonte for 5 years (1999 – 2003). Infectivity and recovery rates were also calculated each year. From 1999 to 2003 the average number of healthy plants decreased and numbers of recovered plants and those with symptoms increased. Productivity of recovered vines was always higher than that of vines with symptoms, and was not influenced by the time elapsed from date of recovery. The relationships between the ln-transformed number of vectors trapped in the vineyards the previous year and the infection and the recovery rates were fitted by an exponential (R2 = 0.95) and an asymptotic (R2= 0.93) model, respectively. Recovery as a possible management of FD in grapevine is discussed.

Abstract

It is foreseen to assemble and test ~600 silicon detector modules of the Forward Silicon Tracker (SCT), using facilities at CERN and the University of Geneva. The mechanical tolerances of the modules being constructed are stringent, making the large scale fabrication of detector modules a challenge. An assembly procedure has been developed with the aim of meeting the required mechanical tolerances. The production of four prototype mechanical modules using this procedure is described. Improvements of the assembly technique planned for the production of future forward modules are outlined.

Abstract

The multi-purpose particle interaction and transport code FLUKA is integral part of all radiation protection studies for the design and operation of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. It is one of the very few codes available for this type of calculations which is capable to calculate in one and the same simulation proton-proton and heavy ion collisions at LHC energies as well as the entire hadronic and electromagnetic particle cascade initiated by secondary particles in detectors and beam-line components from TeV energies down to energies of thermal neutrons. The present paper reviews these capabilities of FLUKA in giving details of relevant physics models along with examples of radiation protection studies for the LHC such as shielding studies for underground areas occupied by personnel during LHC operation and the simulation of induced radioactivity around beam loss points. Integral part of the FLUKA development is a careful benchmarking of specific models as well as the code performance in complex, real life applications which is demonstrated with examples of studies relevant to radiation protection at the LHC.

45. Genetic and Pathogenic Diversity of Pseudomonas avellanaeStrains Isolated from Corylus avellanaTrees in North-west of Italy, and Comparison with Strains from Other Regions

Abstract

Forty strains of Pseudomonas avellanaeisolated from hazelnut (Corylus avellanaL.) trees in the Langhe district of Italy were compared with 15 strains collected from various geographic areas. All strains were assessed by rep-PCR genomic fingerprinting using ERIC, REP and BOX primer sets. Cluster analysis was performed by means of UPGMA. To check the possible differential virulence of the strains, pathogenicity tests were carried out by inoculating leaf scars of hazelnut trees in early autumn. Cluster analysis indicated that, during a four-year study, at least five groups of strains were isolated from different hazelnut orchards located in the small district of Langhe. Two groups were isolated from the same twig. Such strains showed around 20% similarity with other P. avellanaestrains collected from northern Greece and central Italy. The strains from Langhe were less aggressive to hazelnut than strains from northern Greece and central Italy. These results and previous genomic characterizations indicate a possible correlation between genomic profile type and regional geographic distribution of P. avellanaestrains. In addition, the genetic variability found in the strains from Langhe indicates that such populations are older than the more homogenous P. avellanaepopulations from other regions.

Abstract

A sudden apoplexy of young nectarine trees was observed during early autumn 1995 in Piedmont (northern Italy). At collar level, extensive wet necrosis of the tissues beneath the bark was observed. When the infection girdled the trunk, the tree died. LOPAT tests, fluorescence on single-carbon sources and comparison of whole-cell protein profiles with type-strains indicated that the bacterial isolates belong to Pseudomonas vriridiflava and P. svringae pv. syringae. in the pathogenicity tests, the first bacterium incited symptoms similar to those observed in the field. 47. A quantitative needs assessment for a tele-ultrasound consult program in a tertiary care Emergency Department.

Abstract

Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) has been shown to be beneficial in facilitating patient care, but its adoption is variable among emergency medicine (EM) clinicians. We identified the patterns of POCUS use and gaps in POCUS integration in a tertiary care emergency department (ED). These data provide a user-centered platform for subsequent development of a tele-ultrasound (tele-US) consultation program. We developed a 25-item needs assessment survey and used a 5-point Likert scale to assess current patterns of POCUS use and potential needs for POCUS among EM clinicians. Data were analyzed descriptively, and a chi-square analysis was used to assess for differences in POCUS use and comfort levels among clinicians. Overall, 48% (91/190) of eligible providers responded to the survey. Clinician responders included 38% (35/91) attendings (including fellows), 29% (26/91) residents, and 33% (30/91) advance practice providers (APPs). In assessing needs, 70% (58/83) of clinicians noted they would use POCUS more if they had more training. 76% (63/83) of clinicians felt comfortable with image acquisition and 68% (56/83) with image interpretation. APPs were less comfortable with POCUS image interpretation and clinical integration of POCUS findings compared to residents (χ 2 : 16.3, p < 0.0001 and χ 2 : 5.1, p = 0.02, respectively). 65% (54/83) of clinicians would use POCUS more if real-time supervision via tele-US was available for image acquisition and image interpretation. EM clinicians indicated a substantial need for further real-time POCUS training and supervision, especially for image interpretation. Abstract

Plant pathogens are commonly identified in the field by the typical disease symptoms that they can cause. The efficient early detection and identification of pathogens are essential procedures to adopt effective management practices that reduce or prevent their spread in order to mitigate the negative impacts of the disease. In this review, the traditional and innovative methods for early detection of the plant pathogens highlighting their major advantages and limitations are presented and discussed. Traditional techniques of diagnosis used for plant pathogen identification are focused typically on the DNA, RNA (when molecular methods), and proteins or peptides (when serological methods) of the pathogens. Serological methods based on mainly enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) are the most common method used for pathogen detection due to their high-throughput potential and low cost. This technique is not particularly reliable and sufficiently sensitive for many pathogens detection during the asymptomatic stage of infection. For non-cultivable pathogens in the laboratory, nucleic acid-based technology is the best choice for consistent pathogen detection or identification. Lateral flow systems are innovative tools that allow fast and accurate results even in field conditions, but they have sensitivity issues to be overcome. PCR assays performed on last-generation portable thermocyclers may provide rapid detection results in situ. The advent of portable instruments can speed pathogen detection, reduce commercial costs, and potentially revolutionize plant pathology. This review provides information on current methodologies and procedures for the effective detection of different plant pathogens. © 2023 The Authors. 49. Association of Sonographic Sarcopenia and Falls in Older Adults Presenting to the Emergency Department.

Abstract

Background and Objective: To determine the association between point-of-care-ultrasonography (POCUS)-measured sarcopenia and grip strength, as well as the history of prior-year falls among older adults admitted to the emergency department observation unit (EDOU)., Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional observational study was conducted over 8 months at a large urban teaching hospital. A consecutive sample of patients who were 65 years or older and admitted to the EDOU were enrolled in the study. Using standardized techniques, trained research assistants and co-investigators measured patients' biceps brachii and thigh quadriceps muscles via a linear transducer. Grip strength was measured using a Jamar Hydraulic Hand Dynamometer. Participants were surveyed regarding their history of falls in the prior year. Logistic regression analyses assessed the relationship of sarcopenia and grip strength to a history of falls (the primary outcome)., Results: Among 199 participants (55% female), 46% reported falling in the prior year. The median biceps thickness was 2.22 cm with an Interquartile range [IQR] of 1.87-2.74, and the median thigh muscle thickness was 2.91 cm with an IQR of 2.40-3.49. A univariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated a correlation between higher thigh muscle thickness, normal grip strength, and history of prior-year falling, with an odds ratio [OR] of 0.67 (95% conference interval [95%CI] 0.47-0.95) and an OR of 0.51 (95%CI 0.29-0.91), respectively. In multivariate logistic regression, only higher thigh muscle thickness was correlated with a history of prior-year falls, with an OR of 0.59 (95% CI 0.38-0.91)., Conclusions: POCUS-measured thigh muscle thickness has the potential to identify patients who have fallen and thus are at high risk for future falls.

50. Advanced practice providers proficiency-based model of ultrasound training and practice in the ED.

Abstract

Competency in the application of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) has come to be an expected fundamental skill set for advanced practice providers (APPs) in the emergency department. Both American College of Emergency Physicians and the Society of Emergency Medicine Physician Assistants approve of and endorse POCUS use by APPs. However, clinical exposure to and practice of ultrasound in this setting is often variable and without structure. POCUS training must be evolved into a system where developed skills are compatible with clinical need and expectations of APPs. At our institution, we developed a formal, structured POCUS training program for emergency medicine (EM) APPs (including physician assistants and nurse practitioners) and evaluated its efficacy quantitatively by means of a proficiency index.
