Lunar And Planetary Science And Exploration - Abstract
Humans have reached a limit to how much information can be collected from a purely ground-based rover exploration mission on Mars. Therefore, an airborne mission would broaden our knowledge of this planet and at the same time it would allow for a different approach to scientific research. Thus, the Mars Helicopter Scout (MHS) Project was founded. However, as this is only a technology demonstrator, its first and short-term goal is to fly in the vicinity of the Mars Rover and assess where the rover can go. This would reduce the risk of damage to the rover and allow for minimum transit times on the Martian surface. The main objective of the project is conducting small-scale hover testing of a coaxial rotor system in- and out-of-ground effect to study both rotor downwash/outwash and to examine the conditions under which dust kick-up and brownout does or does not occur under Mars-like conditions, with potential application to Mars Helicopter development. Given the exploratory nature of this project, it is limited to a proof of concept of testing techniques that may eventually be used on the full scale MHS. These future tests will help determine whether or not dust kick-up can pose a problem on the performance of the MHSs altimeter.

Ascidiacea -- Distribution -- Identification and classification ,Company distribution practices ,Biological sciences - Abstract
Ascidian fauna have been intensively studied in the Atlantic Ocean, adjacent subpolar regions and Mediterranean Sea for the last 20 years. Here, we have described current species distribution patterns and identified nested areas of endemism using parsimony analysis of endemicity (PAE). We also identified diversity hotspots, areas in which species occurred exclusively, and gaps in information about distribution patterns. Finally, we compared ascidian distributions among various proposed biogeographic divisions. The comprehensive literature review provided data on the geographic distribution of 627 species of ascidians. In the West Atlantic, there were three peaks in richness: north Caribbean--96 species, Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro--61 species and the subantarctic region--54 species. In the eastern Atlantic, the greatest richness occurred on Spanish and French coasts--91 species and in Senegal--83 species. In the Mediterranean, the greatest richness was in Spain and France--142 species and Italy--127 species. PAE designated 20 areas of endemism nested within eight larger regions that were more or less in agreement with realms or provinces of previous studies: North Atlantic, Caribbean, southeastern Brazil, Magellanic, Subantarctic, Tropical West Africa, South Africa, and Mediterranean. Distribution patterns of the Ascidiacea, in general, followed previously proposed divisions of regions and provinces in the Atlantic and adjacent polar regions, but not subdivisions of these regions., Introduction The Atlantic Ocean is the youngest of the large oceans, formed by separation (beginning ca. 142 mya) of the African and American tectonic plates breaking up Gondwana during the [...]

- Abstract
A multi-year research effort aimed at increasing understanding of the centrifugal casting process of wax fuels for hybrid chemical propulsion in multiple thermal and gravitational environments is described. As both radiative and convective heat transfer drive the casting process, the suborbital and orbital microgravity environments are critical to disentangling these contributions to heat transfer away from the fuel. The experimental effort comprises testing on multiple platforms, including the ambient atmosphere of the laboratory, as well as various mobile microgravity platforms. Testing onboard reduced-gravity aircraft facilitates increased understanding of how these types of fluids perform in the microgravity environment, while a suborbital spaceflight and orbital platform under standard atmosphere allow for longer-term observation of natural convection sans buoyancy. An orbital platform subjected to the space environment facilitates understanding of the contribution of radiation to the heat transfer away from the liquid fuel. Each progressive testing environment requires updates to the experimental setup in order to accommodate respective physical and electrical constraints which are described in detail herein. An image analysis routine was developed in order to automate post-processing and determine the solidification front speed for each test. A rotation rate actuation routine is in development which aims to improve the accuracy of the centrifuge control system by leveraging electromagnetic sensing and feeding back rotation rate measurements to the motor driver. Preliminary modeling work was conducted which aims to elucidate the fundamental physics of the centrifugal casting problem; specifically, the impact of rotation rate, material properties, and environmental conditions on the heat transfer and fluid mechanics which constitute the larger casting problem. Both paraffin wax - a solid fuel with two decades of heritage - and the more novel beeswax are conside

Background: Erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL) is a frequent complication of multibacillary leprosy that can result in significant morbidity, including peripheral nerve damage and physical disability. The identification of possible serum markers could be a valuable tool for the early detection of ENL.Aims: The purpose of this study was to evaluate selected serum mediators involved in the innate and adaptive immune responses to identify possible immunomarkers for ENL.Methods: The levels of interleukin-2, interleukin-4, interleukin-6, interleukin-10, interleukin-17, interferon-γ, tumor necrosis factor, nitric oxide and anti-phenolic glycolipid-I antibodies were measured in the sera of leprosy patients with ENL [at the beginning of reaction (M0) and 1 month later (M1)], and then compared with the levels of the same markers in patients with untreated multibacillary leprosy without ENL (controls with leprosy: CTRL) and healthy individuals (healthy controls: CTRH).Results: Significantly higher levels of serum interleukin-6 were observed in M0 than in CTRL. In addition, pairwise comparisons showed higher levels of interleukin-6 in M0 compared to M1. Levels of tumor necrosis factor were higher in M0 than in CTRL, with no significant difference between M0 and M1. There were no differences in the levels of interleukin-2, interleukin-4, interleukin-10, interleukin-17 or interferon-γ between groups. The CTRL group had higher levels of nitric oxide compared to M0 and M1. High levels of anti-phenolic glycolipid-I were observed in M0, M1 and CTRL than in CTRH.Limitations: Three patients were not assessed at M1, decreasing the number of evaluated patients from 14 to 11.Conclusion: High-serum levels of interleukin-6 were observed during ENL, primarily in patients with more severe reactions; levels decreased after specific therapy, suggesting a role for this cytokine in pathogenesis and its utility as an ENL biomarker. Further studies should explore whether interleukin-6 could also be used as a predictive marker for ENL or as a specific target for its treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

SUMMARY The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the protein-calorie malnutrition in BALB/c isogenic mice infected with Lacazia loboi, employing nutritional and histopathological parameters. Four groups were composed: G1: inoculated with restricted diet, G2: not inoculated with restricted diet, G3: inoculated with regular diet, G4: not inoculated with regular diet. Once malnutrition had been imposed, the animals were inoculated intradermally in the footpad and after four months, were sacrificed for the excision of the footpad, liver and spleen. The infection did not exert great influence on the body weight of the mice. The weight of the liver and spleen showed reduction in the undernourished groups when compared to the nourished groups. The macroscopic lesions, viability index and total number of fungi found in the footpads of the infected mice were increased in G3 when compared to G1. Regarding the histopathological analysis of the footpad, a global cellularity increase in the composition of the granuloma was observed in G3 when compared to G1, with large numbers of macrophages and multinucleated giant cells, discrete numbers of lymphocytes were present in G3 and an increase was observed in G1. The results suggest that there is considerable interaction between Jorge Lobo's disease and nutrition.

Jorge Lobo?s Disease ,lcsh:Arctic medicine. Tropical medicine ,Swiss mice ,lcsh:RC955-962 ,Paracoccidioides - Abstract
Sixty-four isogenic Swiss mice were intradermically inoculated in both hind foot pads. The inocula, consisting of fungal suspensions from biopsies obtained from Jorge Lobo?s Disease patients, had the total number of fungi and the viability index determined using a Neubauer chamber and the fluorescein diacetate-ethidium bromide technique (FD-EB), respectively. The animals were sacrificed at times ranging from ten days to eighteen months after inoculation. The cellular infiltrate, mainly consisting of macrophages containing fungi, increased progressively up to end of the study; however, no macroscopic alterations were observed in the inoculated feet. After nine months, small numbers of Langhans? giant cells started to appear in the infiltrate. A considerable number of fungi was observed at the end of the experimental period, but only a few were viable when stained by the FD-EB technique. This fact suggests that there is a multiplication of fungal cells, which are destroyed by the macrophages but remain in the tissue for a long time due perhaps to the difficulties in their elimination. These findings led us to conclude that in spite of the maintenance of the infection in these animals, Swiss mice cannot be considered an ideal model to study Jorge Lobo?s Disease. However, the authors call attention to the possibility of other mouse strains being more susceptible to Paracoccidioides loboi.

The article approaches the dilemmas experienced by international agents in peace operations deployed in Somalia during the 1990s. It highlights the diverging narratives used by international actors (United States and United Nations) vis-à-vis the Somali "Other". It is argued that the main dilemmas experienced during UN and US operations in Somalia were not of technical nature, concerning coordination problems between the main forces involved, as usually claimed. Differently, the article identifies a dispute of political nature between the United States and the UN, created by their divergent conceptions on the Somali "Other"

Jabuticaba, can be consumed in natura, as well as a raw material, nevertheless its commerce is limited due to its perishability. It is native from Brazil and, despite of the potential as source of bioactive components and the necessity of researches about its post- harvest behavior, there are few reports available in the suitable literature. Owing to a fruit compounds profile unknown, this paper tray to present the different fractions – pulp, peel and premium juice - in order to promote the compositions analyses and the determinations of some bioactive components. Deriving from Lagoa Branca- SP, fruits were harvested by selected specialized technicians, separated, sanitized, divided into fractions. The Premium juice, extracted by the pulp centrifugation, was stored under – 5° C, and the peel and pulp were stabilized by dehydration using an adiabatic heater at 55 °C until constant mass, and stored under powder form at room temperature. The experiments were conducted in triplicate. The fractions were characterized according to the physical- chemical aspects, antioxidant capacity by the FRAP method, monomer anthocyanins content, and minerals analyses by atomic absorption espectrophotometry, at the first experiment. At the second experiment water-soluble pectics substances were extracted, these substances are present in the premium juice, and the acid soluble substances from the peel and from the pulp were analyzed using the titulometry. The levels of metoxidation were determined by titulometry and infrared spectophotometry, the monosccharides composition was determined by gas chromatography, the macromolecular composition was determined by exclusion chromatography spherical. In the jabuticaba fruit, as the peel which presents its excessive amount of anthocyanins as the juice with a lower quantity of anthocyanins, but presenting other phenolic compounds, show a great antioxidant power. The quantity of fructose found in the fruit pulp and peel can be detached. Pectins from peel, juice and pulp are composed by homogalacturonanas segments, with high level of esterification (67%, 55% and 53%) and also notable levels of ramnogalacturonanas with side chains incorporated of mannose and arabinose. Compared to the commercial apple pectin samples the experimental jabuticaba pectin presented a higher proportion of arabinose, as well as monosaccharides proportion like commercial simples. The jabuticaba presents a great technological and functional value due to its fructose sugar, anthocyanins, phenolic compouds and pectin contents, and also because of its antioxidant power.

Lacazia loboi ,Complement system ,Jorge Lobo's disease ,Skin lesions ,Immunofluorescence - Abstract
Since there are no studies evaluating the participation of the complement system (CS) in Jorge Lobo's disease and its activity on the fungus Lacazia loboi, we carried out the present investigation. Fungal cells with a viability index of 48% were obtained from the footpads of BALB/c mice and incubated with a pool of inactivated serum from patients with the mycosis or with sterile saline for 30 min at 37 ºC. Next, the tubes were incubated for 2 h with a pool of noninactivated AB+ serum, inactivated serum, serum diluted in EGTA-MgCl2, and serum diluted in EDTA. The viability of L. loboi was evaluated and the fungal suspension was cytocentrifuged. The slides were submitted to immunofluorescence staining using human anti-C3 antibody. The results revealed that 98% of the fungi activated the CS by the alternative pathway and no significant difference in L. loboi viability was observed after CS activation. In parallel, frozen histological sections from 11 patients were analyzed regarding the presence of C3 and IgG by immunofluorescence staining. C3 and IgG deposits were observed in the fungal wall of 100% and 91% of the lesions evaluated, respectively. The results suggest that the CS and immunoglobulins may contribute to the defense mechanisms of the host against L. loboi.

Marfan syndrome ,heart defects, congenital ,Genetic diseases, inborn - Abstract
Marfan Syndrome is an autosomic dominant genetic disorder of the elastic fibers of connective tissue. Although neonatal and infant forms of the disease exist, the classic Marfan Syndrome is the most frequent form of presentation in childhood and adolescence, whith a hereditary background in 70 to 85% of cases. Due to the natural evolution of the disease, there is a progressive involvement of different organs or systems such as skeletal, cardiovascular, dura, ocular, skin-integument and lungs. However, the suspicion must arise on skeletal clinical aspects which are first evident signs. The cardiovascular involvement appears later but is the major life threatening complication. When suspecting Marfan phenotype, it is mandatory to apply Ghent criteria based on family history and clinical findings to establish the diagnosis. If diagnosis is confirmed, the severity of organ involvement must be assessed, to take preventive and/or therapeutic measures, including the search of new cases among relatives. When patients do not fulfill the diagnostic criteria, they must have a yearly evaluation considering the natural progressive evolution of the disease. The aim of this review is to spread and unify criteria on this disease whose diagnosis is eminently clinical, that requires early integral and updated management by a multidisciplinary group, to obtain the best quality of life and survival

Studies on host-parasite interaction in Jorge Lobo's disease are scarce, with no report in the literature on the phagocytosis of Lacazia loboi by phagocytic mononuclear cells. Thus, the objective of the present study was to assess the phagocytic activity of blood monocytes in the presence of L. loboi in patients with the disease and in healthy subjects (controls) over 3 and 24 hours of incubation. Statistical analyses of the results showed no significant difference in percent phagocytosis of the fungus between patient and control monocytes. With respect to incubation time, however, there was a significant difference, in that percent phagocytosis was higher at 3 hours than at 24 hours (p

Swiss mice ,Paracoccidioides ,Jorge Lobo’s Disease - Abstract
Sixty-four isogenic Swiss mice were intradermically inoculated in both hind foot pads. The inocula, consisting of fungal suspensions from biopsies obtained from Jorge Lobo’s Disease patients, had the total number of fungi and the viability index determined using a Neubauer chamber and the fluorescein diacetate-ethidium bromide technique (FD-EB), respectively. The animals were sacrificed at times ranging from ten days to eighteen months after inoculation. The cellular infiltrate, mainly consisting of macrophages containing fungi, increased progressively up to end of the study; however, no macroscopic alterations were observed in the inoculated feet. After nine months, small numbers of Langhans’ giant cells started to appear in the infiltrate. These findings led us to conclude that in spite of the maintenance of the infection in these animals, Swiss mice cannot be considered an ideal model to study Jorge Lobo’s Disease. However, the authors call attention to the possibility of other mouse strains being more susceptible to Paracoccidioides loboi.

Tricofitina ,Dermatofitoses - Abstract
The authors investigated the specific immunological competence of 31 patients with dermatophytosis using tricophytin antigen. Among them, 54.8% showed reaction to the delay phase (48 h) in the following proportions: tinea inguinale, 75%; tinea pedis, 61.5%; tinea unguium, 50% and tinea corporis, 20%. Other 62.5% showed positive result to the early phase (30 m). The association between these reactions revealed that, although the majority of cases with early positive reaction showed negativity to the delayed reaction, 20.8% presented positivity to both phases of the reaction. Out of the non-reactive patients to the delayed phase, 8 were submitted to the other cutaneous tests such as PPD, streptokinase, candidin, vaccinia and DNCB and showed preserved cellular immunity in 75%. These results suggest that, while using this reaction for immunological evaluation of patients with dermatophytosis, one should consider the overall immune status of the patient, the presence of early hypersensibility and the localization of the infection.
