Abstract

The agricultural branch of the Portuguese cooperative sector assumes an important role in rural development and in the inter-cooperation with local, regional, national, and international structures. Given the principles and values that guide cooperatives, they have a greater responsibility in respecting the pillars of good governance such as transparency, integrity, and accountability. However, cooperatives may not be exempt from corruption. The objective of this paper is to assess farmers’ perception of corruption in the agricultural cooperative sector and to analyse if that level depends on their personal characteristics, on farm-specific characteristics, and the relations with the cooperative. With data collected through a survey, a logistic model was estimated to analyse the impact of personal characteristics of farmers and of their farms in the odd of score very high the level of corruption in the agriculture cooperative sector. Results suggest that farmers perceive high levels of corruption and that gender, age, turnover, and seniority as members of the cooperative are relevant predictors of the said level of corruption. These results raise awareness for the greater need of social accountability, more attention for management and supervisory bodies for the ethics of governance, as well as the need to implement internal control systems.

Abstract

AbstractWe analysed the relationships between maternal feeding styles and children’s eating and nutritional factors. A cross-sectional study was developed with 416 mothers linked to 130 public higher education institutions in all Brazilian states and their children aged 18 months to six years. A semi-structured online questionnaire was applied using the Google Forms tool, with questions about sociodemographic conditions, food consumption and anthropometry of the children. The children’s food consumption was assessed based on the Food Consumption Markers Form (SISVAN) for the age groups up to 24 months (n = 84) and over 24 months (n = 332), and the parental style in feeding, based on the Parental Feeding Styles Questionnaire (QEPA). The assessment of the child’s nutritional status was based on the weight and height data reported by the mother. The body mass index/age (BMI/Age) was calculated and classified into age-specific WHO curves. Descriptive analysis and univariate analyses were performed, in the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS, version 26.0) programs (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL). To test the association between categorical variables, the Chi-square test or Fisher’s exact test was used, and multiple logistic regression was used to estimate the independent association between the variables of interest, with an estimated odds ratio and 95% confidence interval. Statistical significance was adopted at 5%. Children under 24 months of age with authoritative mothers were 8.7 times more likely to consume ultra-processed foods and 5.3 times less likely to consume foods rich in vitamin A than those with indulgent mothers. Children over 24 months old with authoritative mothers were 2.5 times more likely to eat meals while watching television, 2.0 times more likely to consume sandwich cookies, candies and sweets, and 2.3 times less likely to have at least the three main meals of a day, compared to those with indulgent mothers. The chances of overweight children being born to authoritative mothers were two times greater compared to underweight children. Higher scores in the demandingness domain among responsive mothers increased the odds ratios of children eating unhealthy foods, using screens during meals, and proved to be a protective factor against low child weight. Abstract

Parasitic gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) cause diseases that are a major challenge to livestock production. Chemical control is the most widely used method, but it has many economic and environmental problems. This study was to evaluate in vitro the nematicidal and enzymatic activity of Pleurotus djamor against Trichostrongylus spp., and Strongyloides papillosus. The fungus was cultivated in a solid medium composed of wheat seeds for 25 days. The enzyme extraction was then performed using distilled water in the ratio of 1:5. Subsequently, by means of filtration and then centrifugation, the cell-free crude extract (CFCE) was obtained. Proteolytic activity was measured at pH 5 using the caseinolytic assay. The nematophagous assay of the P. djamor on the infective larvae (L3) was performed for 6 h. The nematicidal effect of the CFCE (active and denatured) was analysed over a period of 48 h. The CFCE showed proteolytic activity of 8.9 ± 0,5 U mL−1. P. djamor reduced the number of L3 by 75% (p < 0.01). The active CFCE showed a statistical difference compared to the control and the denatured (p < 0.01). On the other hand, there was no significant difference between the denatured group and the control group (without enzymes). The percentage reduction of L3 was 57%. This result suggests that the nematicidal action occurred mainly due to the activity of the proteases present in the CFCE. This study reports for the first time the applicability of proteases produced by P. djamor in the biochemical control of GINs, which could become an alternative biopesticide in the future.
