1. The development of an educational software for aircraft flight mechanics calculations

Abstract

Due to its versatility and low cost, the use of unmanned aerial vehicles has been rapidly spreading in recent years, in applications ranging form military operations, to land mapping, rescuing of lost people, aiding of natural disaster victims and many others. To properly design and operate such a vehicle, it is necessary to know its flight mechanics in the various stages of the flight. Despite the fact that the physic behind the analysis of an aircraft's flight mechanics is well known and purely based on Classical Mechanics, the large quantity of input and output data involved favors the use of a computational toll. This work presents the development of a toolbox called APT (Aircraft Performance Toolbox), able to make preliminary aircraft flight mechanics calculations regarding its performance. To achieve this goal, a number of Matlab scripts were created to perform the calculations, and a graphical interface was created to unify them and to allow the end-user to perform the analysis in a clear and intuitive way. To illustrate the potential of the toolbox, we use APT to in the analysis of an UAV meant to participate in the SAE Brasil AeroDesign competition of the year of 2014.

9. Baroreflex depression persists in the early phase after hypertension reversal

Abstract

The baroreflex control of heart rate (HR) was evaluated in conscious chronic renal hypertensive rats (RHR; 1K-1C, 2 mo) under control conditions and after reversal of hypertension by unclipping the renal artery or sodium nitroprusside infusion. Unclipping and nitroprusside infusion were both followed by significant decreases in the mean arterial pressure (unclipping: from 199 [+ or -] 4 to 153 [+ or -] 8 mmHg; nitroprusside infusion: from 197 [+ or -] 9 to 166 [+ or -] 6 mmHg) as well as slight and significant increases, respectively, in the baroreflex bradycardic response index (unclipping: from 0.2 [+ or -] 0.04 to 0.6 [+ or -] 0.1 beats [multiplied by] [min.sup.-1] [multiplied by] mm[Hg.sup.-1].; nitroprusside infusion: from 0.1 [+ or -] 0.04 to 0.5 [+ or -] 0.1 beats [multiplied by] [min.sup.-1] [multiplied by] mm[Hg.sup.-1]). However, this index was still depressed compared with that for normotensive control rats (2.1 [+ or -] 0.2 beats [multiplied by] [min.sup.-1.] [multiplied by] mm[Hg.sup.-1]). The index for the baroreflex tachycardic response was also depressed under control conditions and remained unchanged after hypertension reversal. RHR possessed markedly attenuated vagal tone as demonstrated by pharmacological blockade of parasympathetic and sympathetic control of HR with methylatropine and propranolol, respectively. A reduced bradycardic response was also observed in anesthetized RHR during electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve or methacholine chloride injection, indicating impairment of efferent vagal influence over the HR. Together, these data indicate that 2 h after hypertension reversal in RHR, the previously described normalization of baroreceptor gain occurs independent of the minimal or lack of recovery of baroreflex control over HR. baroreceptors; baroreflexes; resetting; vagal function

Am J Physiol Regulatory Integrative Comp Physiol 279: R1865-R1871, 2000.--Aging is associated with altered autonomic control of cardiovascular function, but baroreflex function in animal models of aging remains controversial. In this study, pressor and depressor agent-induced reflex bradycardia and tachycardia were attenuated in conscious old (24 mo) rats [57 and 59% of responses in young (10 wk) Wistar rats, respectively]. The intrinsic heart rate (HR, 339 [+ or -] 5 vs. 410 [+ or -] 10 beats/min) was reduced in aged animals, but no intergroup differences in resting mean arterial blood pressure (MAP, 112 [+ or -] 3 vs. 113 [+ or -] 5 mmHg) or HR (344 [+ or -] 9 vs. 347 [+ or -] 9 beats/min) existed between old and young rats, respectively. The aged group also exhibited a depressed (49%) parasympathetic contribution to the resting HR value (vagal effect) but preserved sympathetic function after intravenous methylatropine and propranolol. An implantable electrode revealed tonic renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA) was similar between groups. However, old rats showed impaired barorefiex control of HR and RSNA after intravenous nitroprusside (-0.63 [+ or -] 0.18 vs. - 1.84 [+ or -] 0.4 bars [multiplied by] [cycle.sup.-1][multiplied by] mm[Hg.sup.-1] [multiplied by] [s.sup.-1]). Evidence of infection (presence of Leishmania in splenic cultures, positive leishmanin skin test (LST) or detection of anti-Leishmania antibody activity in the serum) was found in 57% of the animals. Both evidence of weight loss (x2-test, P = 0.0005) and presence of specific antibody activity in the serum (x2-test, P < 0.0001) were directly associated with positive splenic culture. The frequencies of animals with positive splenic culture were directly correlated with the intensities of antibody activity in the serum as measured by ELISA (relative risk of 3.4 for animals with moderate antibody levels and relative risk of 8.43 for animals with high-antibody levels). A negative association was observed between positive leishmanin skin test results and emaciation (x2, P = 0.0089). Furthermore, animals with positive splenic cultures and negative leishmanin skin test results had higher levels of total serum IgG (Kruskal–Wallis test, P = 0.001) and IgG2 (Kruskal–Wallis test, P = 0.05) than animals with negative splenic cultures, and were more emaciated than animals with negative LST results and positive splenic cultures. The data presented herein suggest that associating these common parameters may improve their performance in predicting susceptibility to canine visceral leishmaniasis.

Abstract

Este trabalho tem como propósito avaliar a cinética de consumo do estabilizante 2NDPA presente em uma amostra de propelente tipo base-dupla (BD). Tópicos relativos ao método analítico empregado e, a interferências na cinética de consumo do estabilizante pela nitroglicerina e o salicilato de chumbo presente no propelente, também são abordados. Foram obtidos, ainda, os parâmetros cinéticos de consumo do 2NDPA. Para isto, foi empregada a técnica da Cromatografia Líquida de Alta Eficiência (CLAE). Os dados experimentais foram bem ajustados para uma cinética de pseudoprimeira ordem. A energia de ativação (Ea) e o fator pré-exponencial (A) determinados foram, respectivamente, (1,22 ± 0,42) 10² kJ mol-1 e (10(16) ±10(6)) dia-1. The purpose of this work was to study the kinetic depletion of stabilizers 2-NDPA in double-base propellants. Topics relatives at analytic method utilized and interferences in kinetic of depletion of stabilizers by presence of nitroglycerine and lead salicylate are presented. The kinetics parameters of depletion of stabilizers were determined by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). The experimental data were adjusted to a pseudo-first kinetic model. The activation energy (Ea) and the pre-exponential factor (A) calculated were (1.22 ± 0.42) 10² kJ mol-1 and (10(16) ± 10(6)) day-1, respectively.

40. Risk factors for <e1>helicobacter pylori</e1> infection in children: is education a main determinant?

Abstract

To investigate potential risk factors associated with Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection, we performed a case-control study in 167 consecutively selected hospitalized children in Salvador, Brazil. Hp infection was identified by the presence of IgG against Hp in serum samples. Data were gathered using a structured questionnaire, 38·3% children were found to be seropositive and classified as cases, and 61·7% were seronegative controls. After multivariate analysis, independent variables associated with Hp infection included: the educational attainment of the child's provider 11 years (OR 0·1, 95% CI 0·01–0·9), poor garbage disposal service (OR 2·2, 95% CI 1·0–4·9), thumb sucking (OR 4·6, 95% CI 1·1–19·8), brushing teeth more than once a day (OR 5·6, 95% CI 1·8–17·7), having a pet dog (OR 2·5, 95% CI 1·0–6·1), and a history of chronic urticaria (OR 4·0, 95% CI 1·5–10·8). The risk factors identified are consistent with some, but not all, previous studies supporting either oral–oral or faecal–oral transmission of Hp. Our data suggested that a higher educational attainment might play an important role in preventing Hp infection.
