According to the current galaxy formation paradigm, mergers and interactions play an important role in shaping present-day galaxies. The remnants of this merger activity can be used to constrain galaxy formation models. In this work we use a sample of thirty hydrodynamical simulations of Milky Way-mass halos, from the AURIGA project, to generate surface brightness maps and search for the brightest stream in each halo as a function of varying limiting magnitude. We find that none of the models shows signatures of stellar streams at $\mu_{r}^{lim} \leq 25$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$. The stream detection increases significantly between 27 and 28 mag arcsec$^{-2}$. Nevertheless, even at 30 mag arcsec$^{-2}$, 13 percent of our models show no detectable streams. We study the properties of the brightest streams progenitors (BSPs). We find that BSPs are accreted within a broad range of infall times, from 1.6 to 10 Gyr ago, with only 25 percent accreted within the last 5 Gyrs; thus most BSPs correspond to relatively early accretion events. We also find that 37 percent of the BSPs survive to the present day. The median infall times for surviving and disrupted BSPs are 5.6 and 6.7 Gyr, respectively. We find a clear relation between infall time and infall mass of the BSPs, such that more massive progenitors tend to be accreted at later times. In hierarchical models of galaxy formation, stellar tidal streams are expected around most, if not all, galaxies. Although these features may provide useful diagnostics of the $\Lambda$CDM model, their observational properties remain poorly constrained because they are challenging to detect and interpret and have been studied in detail for only a sparse sampling of galaxy population. More quantitative, systematic approaches are required. We advocate statistical analysis of the counts and properties of such features in archival wide-field imaging surveys for a direct comparison against results from numerical simulations. Thus, in this paper we aim to study systematically the frequency of occurrence and other observational properties of tidal features around nearby galaxies. The sample we construct will act as a foundational dataset for statistical comparison with cosmological models of galaxy formation. Our approach is based on a visual classification of diffuse features around a volume-limited sample of nearby galaxies, using a post-processing of Sloan Digital Sky Survey imaging optimized for the detection of stellar structure with low surface brightness. At a limiting surface brightness of $28\ \mathrm{mag~arcsec^{-2}}$, 14% of the galaxies in our sample exhibit evidence of diffuse features likely to have arisen from minor merging events. Our technique recovers all previously known streams in our sample and yields a number of new candidates. Consistent with previous studies, coherent arc-like features and shells are the most common type of tidal structures found in this study. We conclude that although some detections are ambiguous and could be corroborated or refuted with deeper imaging, our technique provides a reliable foundation for the statistical analysis of diffuse circumgalactic features in wide-area imaging surveys, and for the identification of targets for follow-up studies., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables

We report the discovery of NGC 253-dw2, a dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy candidate undergoing tidal disruption around a nearby spiral galaxy, NGC 253 in the Sculptor group: the first such event identified beyond the Local Group. The dwarf was found using small-aperture amateur telescopes, and followed up with Suprime-Cam on the 8 m Subaru Telescope in order to resolve its brightest stars. Using g- and R_c-band photometry, we detect a red giant branch consistent with an old, metal-poor stellar population at a distance of ~ 3.5 Mpc. From the distribution of likely member stars, we infer a highly elongated shape with a semi-major axis half-light radius of (2 +/- 0.4) kpc. Star counts also yield a luminosity estimate of ~ 2x10^6 L_Sun,V (M_V ~ -10.7). The morphological properties of NGC 253-dw2 mark it as distinct from normal dSphs and imply ongoing disruption at a projected distance of ~ 50 kpc from the main galaxy. Our observations support the hierarchical paradigm wherein massive galaxies continously accrete less massive ones, and provide a new case study for dSph infall and dissolution dynamics. It is unknown if the current size and shape of protected areas (PA) in Costa Rica favors retention of viable populations of wildlife. The western border of Carara National Park (CNP) and its surroundings were characterized at a landscape level in order to consider their implications for biodiversity conservation. 54 400 hectares of Costa Rican Central Pacific tree cover were analyzed (1997, 2000, 2005) to calculate the size of the PAs, mean shape index, mean patch fractal dimension and edge density. Aside from that, we performed eight habitat evaluations on the western border of the CNP (costanera-sur highway) to assess tree composition, regeneration, litter, horizontal obstruction, and canopy cover. It was determined that the PAs were between 36 and 5 242 hectares long. We observed that the tree cover increased from 21 231,8 hectares in 1997 to 29 006,9 hectares in 2000, and decreased to 26 933,4 hectares in 2005. We found out that most of the tree cover (2005) belongs to CNP and ZP Cerros de Turrubares, but both of them present high values of edge density and mean shape index, suggesting that they are susceptible to alteration and fragmentation. The four evaluated points have a similar successional stage. In order to maintain the potential of CNP as an area for biodiversity conservation, we recommend reducing the maximum speed limit in the region adjacent to the park. It is also important to establish frequent monitoring of the tree cover and promote reforestation programs to create corridors that stop the area's fragmentation and facilitate biodiversity conservation., Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure, 4 tables

We report the discovery of a giant stellar tidal stream in the halo of NGC 4631, a nearby edge-on spiral galaxy interacting with the spiral NGC 4656, in deep images taken with a 40-cm aperture robotic telescope. The stream has two components: a bridge-like feature extended between NGC 4631 and NGC 4656 (stream_SE) and an overdensity with extended features on the opposite side of the NGC 4631 disk (stream_NW). Together, these features extend more than 85 kpc and display a clear (g-r) colour gradient. The orientation of stream_SE relative to the orientations of NGC 4631 and NGC 4656 is not consistent with an origin from interaction between these two spirals, and is more likely debris from a satellite encounter. The stellar tidal features can be qualitatively reproduced in an N-body model of the tidal disruption of a single, massive dwarf satellite on a moderately eccentric orbit (e=0.6) around NGC 4631 over $\sim$ 3.5 Gyr, with a dynamical mass ratio (m1:m2) of ~40. Both modelling and inferences from the morphology of the streams indicate these are not associated with the complex HI tidal features observed between both spirals, which likely originate from a more recent, gas-rich accretion event. The detailed structure of stream_NW suggests it may contain the progenitor of the stream, in agreement with the N-body model. In addition, stream_NW is roughly aligned with two very faint dwarf spheroidal candidates. The system of dwarf galaxies and the tidal stream around NGC 4631 can provide an additional interesting case for exploring the anisotropy distribution of satellite galaxies recently reported in Local Group spiral galaxies by means of future follow-up observations., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures.Submitted to The Astronomical Journal.
