Childhood cancers are life-threatening diseases that affect the whole family. During the treatment moral situations might arise. Research on how parents perceive moral challenges in childhood cancer care is sparse. The aim was to explore parents' main concern, and how they deal with their main concern, when facing moral challenges in childhood cancer care. Data collection included focus group interviews with parents. The data analysis was carried out according to a classical theory and revealed the core category "Sheltering in chaos". The strategies to handle the main concern included "To bring the child through a life-saving trajectory" by "Balancing control" and "Deliberating of suffering. The consequences included feelings of being "Torn between roles". "Familiarity" emerged as a facilitating factor to handle moral challenges. The results indicate that parents are torn between different roles, and that the care experience is improved through familiarity with the healthcare professionals. The following findings may inspire new ways of offering moral support to families in childhood cancer care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article takes its starting point in a longitudinal interview study that began in 2013 with the aim of investigating identity reconstruction during the transition from military to civilian life. Annual follow-up interviews were conducted for 3 years, after which there was a break for 7 years until 2023 when a new interview cycle was conducted. The article presents the findings from this interview round. The purpose of the study was to describe the ways in which military identity had impacted the selves and lives of the participants. An inductive approach was employed in the analysis and an abductive approach used in the interpretative phase. The results showed, among other things, that a military identity, containing a particularly strong work ethic, had grown salient over the years. This military identity salience amplified the perception of a contrasting civilian work ethic, which generated moral frustration and even conflict. It was seen as imperative to maintain consistency between a military work ethic and the identity standard as a civilian employee rather than to modify the behavior to another standard, i.e., a civilian standard. These results were counterintuitive given the earlier interview cycles. A military work ethic was generally a powerful asset but could have negative health outcomes, manifesting as burnout. The results reflect the challenges in operating multiple identities tailored to contrasting moral regimes. Future longitudinal qualitative and quantitative research approaches to selfidentity work among former service members are warranted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

RACISM , *VIRTUE , *ETHICS , *INSTITUTIONAL racism , *JUSTICE - Abstract
The resurgence in antiracist activism and education brought with it the need to better understand what racism is and how it operates in the production of racial injustice. Prevailing theories understand racism as fundamentally structural, essentially cognitive, and requiring political philosophical investigation over moral philosophical investigation. Such theories are useful within limits, but ultimately offer an inaccurate or incomplete view of racism. In what follows, I offer a virtue-based account of racism that begins its genesis story with individuals, yet acknowledges and attends to the reality and severity of institutional and structural racism; is essentially both cognitive and non-cognitive; and, prioritizes moral philosophical investigation. Throughout, I apply my theory of racism to various spheres of human experience and history to demonstrate its ability to accurately and comprehensively capture the relevant entities and phenomena implicated in racism. In improving our understanding of racism, I aim to generate more targeted and comprehensive reform that effectively mitigates racism and promotes human and societal flourishing. MILITARY service , *ARMED Forces , *MILITARY personnel , *SOCIALIZATION , *MENTAL health - Abstract
Military service can require soldiers to act beyond their moral beliefs, something that can impair soldiers' mental health. However, little is known about the shaping of soldiers' moral identity within their institutional context. This article explores how the moral identity of 20 experienced Norwegian soldiers is (re-)shaped in the Army. Findings from unstructured interviews suggest that they accept compromising their moral beliefs and give priority to an institutional obligation to follow orders. They present three mediating arguments justifying such a compromise and one effort to reduce the potential burden of carrying out illegal or immoral orders. I argue that these compromises are made possible through a shared belief they are socialized into through interactions in their military context. The study complements our knowledge of socialization processes in the military and identifies two theoretical concepts useful to gain knowledge about the (re-)shaping of soldiers' moral identity. Adults have been found to tell lies about their physical and mental health concerns, but no research has assessed how health lies are perceived by others. The present study explored the moral acceptability of older adults' health lies. A sample of 73 younger and 61 older adults assessed how good or bad it is for older adults to tell health lies (about physical health, mental health, medication use) to their doctor, spouse, and adult child. All health lies were rated quite negatively but lies about medication adherence and lies to doctors were rated the most negatively. Compared with younger adults, older adults were more approving of lying to a doctor about physical health but less approving of lying to one's adult child about mental health. Across participants, those with greater depressive symptoms viewed mental health lies less negatively. Given that health lies were rated quite negatively, telling health lies may hold negative social implications for older adults. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

8. Against age limits for men in reproductive care.

- Abstract
Almost all countries and fertility clinics impose age limits on women who want to become pregnant through Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART). Age limits for aspiring fathers, however, are much less common and remain a topic of debate. This article departs from the principle of reproductive autonomy and a conditional positive right to receive ART, and asks whether there are convincing arguments to also impose age limits on aspiring fathers. After considering three consequentialist approaches to justifying age limits for aspiring fathers, we take in a concrete normative stance by concluding that those are not strong enough to justify such cut-offs. We reinforce our position by drawing a comparison between the case of a 39-year-old woman who wants to become a single mother via a sperm donor on the one hand, and on the other hand the same woman who wants to have a child with a 64-year-old man who she loves and who is willing to care for the child as long as he is able to. We conclude that, as long as appropriate precautions are taken to protect the welfare of the future child, couples who want to receive fertility treatment should never be limited on the basis of the age of the (male) partner. An absence of age limits for men would respect the reproductive autonomy of both the man and the woman. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research on sequential choice has extensively demonstrated moral licensing across traits such as fairness, compassion, and honesty; however, the impact of moral licensing on industriousness remains unexplored. To establish the robustness of moral licensing, diverse moral traits must be considered. This article explores moral licensing versus consistency in sequential behaviour paradigms, specifically focusing on industriousness across three experiments. Employing a single-factor between-subjects design, the first two experiments reveal that individuals engaged in moral activities are subsequently more likely than those who are not involved in moral activities to accept difficult tasks. The third experiment extends these findings, showing that those involved in moral activities are more inclined than those who are not involved in moral activities to choose products requiring effort. Moreover, it confirms the mediating role of positive moral identity in explaining the connection between past moral actions and subsequent industrious behaviours. In contrast to prior research, which emphasised the potential of moral behaviours leading to subsequent unethical actions, this study contributes to the moral licensing literature by demonstrating the positive influence of past moral actions on subsequent industrious behaviour. While true interdisciplinarity is needed to understand morality and its development, a realistic step in that direction for the current special issue is to enhance and promote a neglected disciplinary contribution to the field, namely sociology. This special issue brings together six articles applying sociological analysis to moral development and education together with one article overviewing sociological contributions to morality in general. The work is intended to invigorate sociological treatments of moral development and education as a step toward a genuinely interdisciplinary domain of research on morality and its education. The contributions to this special issue bring alive the moral background by combining contextual and individual levels of analysis in the exploration of difficult topics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background. The question of personality traits influence on a person's choice in solving moral issues is quite relevant and is widely represented in modern research in the personality psychology field. No one has conducted such studies using the socionic model yet. Purpose. The purpose of empirical study is to test the socionic type influence on person’s choice in moral dilemmas solving. Methodology. To conduct the research, we used methods of socionic type identification, author’s moral dilemmas solving test, factor and correlation analysis. Results. Provided factor analysis separated all questions from author’s tests into 5 factors, which we interpret like: personal safety, personal values, following public morality regulations, following the rules and laws, safety of loved ones. Correlation analysis for the factors and socionic traits revealed a positive correlation between the factor “personal safety” and the pole “Farsighted”. “Personal values” factor showed a positive correlation with the pole “Asking” and the factor “following the rules and laws” – with the pole “Result”. The factor “following public morality regulations” revealed a positive correlation with the poles “Dynamics” and “Serious”, and the factor “safety of loved ones” showed a positive correlation with the poles “Yielding”, “Tactical” and “Emotivist”. Practical implications. The findings contribute in definition of socionic traits clarification, to better understand their influence on observable human’s behavior. This ensures that practitioners who use socionic methods draw on the experimentally verified hypotheses.

Abstract Background Personal Health Monitoring (PHM) has the potential to enhance soldier health outcomes. To promote morally responsible development, implementation, and use of PHM in the armed forces, it is important to be aware of the inherent ethical dimension of PHM. In order to improve the understanding of the ethical dimension, a scoping review of the existing academic literature on the ethical dimension of PHM was conducted. Methods Four bibliographical databases (Ovid/Medline, Embase.com, Clarivate Analytics/Web of Science Core Collection, and Elsevier/SCOPUS) were searched for relevant literature from their inception to June 1, 2023. Studies were included if they sufficiently addressed the ethical dimension of PHM and were related to or claimed relevance for the military. After selection and extraction, the data was analysed using a qualitative thematic approach. Results A total of 9,071 references were screened. After eligibility screening, 19 articles were included for this review. The review identifies and describes three categories reflecting the ethical dimension of PHM in the military: (1) utilitarian considerations, (2) value-based considerations, and (3) regulatory responsibilities. The four main values that have been identified as being of concern are those of privacy, security, trust, and autonomy. Conclusions This review demonstrates that PHM in the armed forces is primarily approached from a utilitarian perspective, with a focus on its benefits, without explicit critical deliberation on PHM’s potential moral downsides. Also, the review highlights a significant research gap with a specific lack of empirical studies focussing specifically on the ethical dimension of PHM. Awareness of the inherent ethical dimension of PHM in the military, including value conflicts and how to balance them, can help to contribute to a morally responsible development, implementation, and use of PHM in the armed forces.

The plot of Turgenev’s novellas and novels typically explore complex situations related to the relationship between a man and a woman. However, the theme of child/parent relations occupies an equally significant place in the writer’s work. In early works, he often solves it at the household level, in the form of parental concern for the socialization of their child, and sometimes it is also associated with the motive of parental authority. However, since the late 1850s, Turgenev’s portrayal of parental love takes on spiritual dimensions. Christian motifs, such as parental blessings and prayers for children, are becoming increasingly important. The intensification of such intonations also occurs in later years, when Turgenev is involved in the polemics relevant for that time about the relationship between the instinctive and the moral, including in child-parent relations, which captures even the animal world from him. In some of his later works, inspired by observations of birds, the writer depicts parental care for their offspring and translates these behaviors to a human context, underscoring the supernatural significance of parental love.

The mechanism of moral disengagement allows individuals to lessen feelings of guilt or shame stemming from immoral actions. Nevertheless, there is a paucity of local research on the functioning of moral disengagement mechanisms within the framework of social psychology and morality in Malaysia. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between moral identity and moral emotions, and whether they are associated with moral disengagement in the context of moral misconduct. The study targets UKM students who are pursuing their studies and residing in the residential colleges at UKM, Bangi. The research was conducted using a quantitative approach, with data collected through a questionnaire that included one demographic section and three sections examining different variables. A total of 200 UKM students from various backgrounds participated in the study and responded to the questionnaire. Most respondents were undergraduate students, with the majority being around 22 years old. The survey data were analyzed empirically using SPSS software. The findings revealed a positive relationship between the level of moral identity and moral disengagement. Additionally, there was a positive relationship between moral emotions and moral disengagement among UKM students. The results of this study can serve as a guide to understanding the relationship between moral identity, moral emotions, and moral disengagement. Given the lack of research on aspects of morality such as moral disengagement, these findings are particularly valuable. The conclusion of the study discusses and suggests several intervention steps that can be taken to raise awareness about the implications of moral disengagement, thereby preventing moral misconduct among students and the broader community. It also encourages more psychological and counseling researchers to explore various aspects of morality in their future research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary In the Anthropocene increasingly dramatic changes for the state of planet Earth occurred due to the consequences of industrialisation. The global economy and human behaviour also led to environmental stress and damage in the limited Earth system. A rethink in many areas must take place to avoid further consequences. Because of the importance of chemistry also in the future, ethics must be anchored as a moral value system. This is where scientists are called upon through their responsibility in applying the results of science. Sustainability is also important for the preservation of the regenerative capacity of ecosystems and the careful use of resources. It is necessary that schools and universities deal with ethics in chemistry in connection with moral, responsibility and sustainability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article focuses on revealing the difference between the concepts of ethics and morality, and investigating the extent to which teachers need to agree on principles within an educational institution and provide ourselves with a deontological and professional code appropriate to the teaching context in which we are integrated. The ethical-teaching relationship in general and, particularly, professional teaching ethics is reviewed, as well as the elements that characterize an ethical teaching-learning process. The professional ethical codes of teachers are the object of study, defining different types of specific ethical values in the field of higher music education in conservatories. It also incorporates a broad reflection on the importance of these values in the training of music teachers, their ethical and institutional duties, and the current situation in this matter in higher music centers in Spain. Introduction: This study investigated the association between parenting styles and malevolent creativity. Methods: It used latent profile analysis to compare the differences in malevolent creativity between different combinations of parenting styles with an online sample (N = 620). Results: The results of the study suggest that a three-profile solution best fits the data, and the three profiles were labelled positive open parenting, undifferentiated parenting and negative limited parenting. Subsequent analyses revealed that there were significant differences in malevolent creativity performance among the three parenting styles, with participants in the positive open parenting having more malevolent creativity. Those with undifferentiated parenting had the lowest scores. Discussion: The findings provide theoretical guidance for parenting strategies. Future intervention studies on malevolent creativity should also consider the potential impact of parenting style to obtain better results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pope Francis is not a philosopher, the proposals of his magisterium are not ethical, but moral; but he deepens them from a sincerely intellectual selfawareness, in such a way that intuitions of philosophical ethics can be found in them. Bergoglio’s ethical insights form a prism whose vertices are: evangelical eudaemonism; a realism foreign to legalisms; an understanding of the moral subject configured in the dialogical-fraternal transcendence with the other; open in the contemplative gaze to the natural; who finds in the mercy with which he suffers the actual dimension of his life and his truth. His faith and the historical situations he has faced have been the catalysts for his moral reflection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During research in Qatar with practitioners in assisted reproduction and infertility medicine, I found that across the broad range of views they expressed about their approaches to consulting with patients, there was something shared: that their work with assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) entailed taking up moral and ethical positions. In this paper, I draw on interviews with medical professionals to analyse the local moral worlds which shape the practice of assisted reproduction. I provide an analysis of how professionals position themselves amid the complex ethical, moral, and cultural landscape in which ARTs in Qatar are situated. In developing my analysis of how these positionings involve a striving to be virtuous, I contribute to anthropological understandings of the complexities of everyday negotiations of moral practice. This is a process, I argue, that reveals both the interplay between self-construction and professional practice and the multidimensionality of the underexplored ART context in Qatar. LITERATURE reviews ,RESPONSIBILITY ,ETHICAL problems ,LIQUIDATION ,CURATORSHIP ,INTEGRITY ,BUSINESS ethics - Abstract
This study aims to investigate the ethical responsibilities of curators in managing the liquidation process of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs). The method used is a literature review, examining various relevant sources to gain a deep understanding of the moral and ethical dilemmas faced by curators during the SOE liquidation process. The study's findings indicate that the moral responsibilities of curators encompass several critical aspects: protecting public interests by ensuring the continuity of essential services provided by SOEs tao the community, considering the welfare of affected employees by providing fair compensation and support in finding new employment, ensuring fairness for all stakeholders involved in the liquidation process through high transparency to support accountability, upholding integrity and high business ethics to avoid conflicts of interest and ensuring decisions are based on mature moral considerations, and considering the social and environmental impacts of SOE liquidation and seeking solutions that minimize negative consequences. This research provides important insights for curatorial practices and the ethical and responsible management of SOE liquidations. Curators are also advised to continuously enhance their skills and expertise through ongoing training and education to ensure the liquidation process is conducted fairly, transparently, and responsibly. This study examined whether grateful people are prone to sacrificing other people for the sake of their benefactors, themselves for the sake of their benefactors, and themselves for the sake of other people. Study 1 used a vignette methodology to induce participants' gratitude, and Study 2 an autobiographical recall procedure. In Study 1, the participants who received benevolent benefits in the vignette (gratitude condition) were more likely to sacrifice other people for the sake of their benefactors compared to those receiving benefits without benevolent intention (indebtedness‐baseline condition). The same method revealed a tendency for grateful people to sacrifice themselves for benefactors and others. Study 1's results could not be replicated by the preregistered analysis in Study 2. However, gratitude positively correlated with their propensity to sacrifice other people for the sake of benefactors, though it was not a preregistered analysis. The findings reveal the bright and dark sides of the consequences of gratitude. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although vegetarian and vegan (veg*an) diets can have various health, environmental and animal welfare benefits, they remain socially contentious. Despite the fundamentally social nature of eating, in situ investigations of the social-interactional elements of dietary identities have so far been lacking. Using a recently developed remotely moderated focus group design, we explore (across 25 discussions involving 122 participants) the discursive management of veg*an ‘identity flashpoints’ during discussion with meat-eaters. Our discursive analyses explore how these moments in conversation arise and are handled in real-time within the unfolding interaction. We demonstrate how two particularly interactionally consequential features of veg*an accounts of their practice become constructed within these encounters. Firstly, personal accounts of veg*anism are interactionally preferred to moral accounts. Secondly, demonstrating continued liking of meat was necessary to be met with group acceptance among majority meat-eating groups. These features shed light on the social interactional perils of veg*an attempts to engage in persuasion with meat-eaters, particularly those based on moral grounds. Our novel methodology affords detailed analyses of how veg*ans navigate the performance of their identities in their daily interactions with dietary outgroups, providing insight into micro-level processes that might underpin, or hamper, processes of societal change in the dietary domain. In this article, we focus on a particular kind of emotional impact of the pandemic, namely the phenomenology of the experience of moral injury in healthcare professionals. Drawing on Weber's reflections in his lecture Politics as a Vocation and data from the Experiences of Social Distancing during the COVID-19 Pandemic Survey, we analyse responses from healthcare professionals which show the experiences of burnout, sense of frustration and impotence, and how these affect clinicians' emotional state. We argue that this may relate to the ethical conflicts they experience when they are forced to make clinical decisions where there are no optimal outcomes, and how in turn that impacts on their own emotional state. We then further examine the notion of 'burnout' and the phenomenology of 'moral injury'. Our argument is that these experiences of moral injury across a range of clinicians during the pandemic may be more prevalent and long-standing in psychiatry and mental health than in other areas of healthcare, where ethically difficult decisions and resource constraints are common outside times of crisis. Hence, in these clinical arenas, moral injury and the phenomenology of emotional changes may be independent of the pandemic. The insights gained during the pandemic may provide wider insights into the challenges of developing services and training the workforce to provide appropriate mental health care. ETHICAL decision making , *VIRAL vaccines , *IDEALISM , *UTILITARIANISM , *MORAL relativism - Abstract
Objective: The current study aims to assess, for the first time, whether vaccination is predicted by different behavioral and cognitive aspects of moral decision‐making. Background: Studies linking moral factors to vaccination have largely examined whether vaccination decisions can be explained by individual differences in the endorsement of various principles and norms central to deontology‐based arguments in vaccination ethics. However, these studies have overlooked whether individuals prioritize norms over other considerations when making decisions, such as maximizing consequences (utilitarianism). Method: In a sample of 1492 participants, the current study assessed whether vaccination is explained by individual differences in three aspects of moral decision‐making (consequence sensitivity, norm sensitivity, and action tendency), while also considering ethics position (idealism, relativism) and moral identity. Results: Supportive vaccination (vaccine uptake accompanied by a positive attitude toward vaccines) was associated with utilitarianism (increased consequence sensitivity) and increased tolerance to risks and harm toward others. Meanwhile, although those in the non‐vaccinated group was associated with higher harm sensitivities, they neither supported nor received the COVID vaccines (when vaccines prevent harm from infection). Conclusion: Pro‐vaccination messages may be made more effective by addressing perceptions of harms associated with vaccines and infections, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For Kant, the contemplation of natural beauty not only frees us from a utilitarian spirit and exploitation, but it elevates us as human beings to regions of feelings, in which the contemplation of nature and its respect is lived freely and disinterestedly. Contemplating the beauty in nature and preserving it contributes to humanizing us, thanks to the freedom that we develop through contemplation, the meaning of life that contemplation of beautiful nature provides us, the sociability that we develop through taste and the moral awakening that comes from contemplating natural beauty. Moral distress has emerged as a significant concern for critical care nurses, particularly due to the complex and demanding care provided to critically ill patients in critical care units. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has introduced new ethical challenges and changes in clinical practice, further exacerbating the experience of moral distress among these nurses. This systematic review compares the factors influencing moral distress among critical care nurses before and during the COVID-19 pandemic to gain a comprehensive understanding of the impact of the pandemic on moral distress. For this systematic review, PubMed, Scopus, ProQuest, Web of Science, medRxiv, bioRxiv, Embase, and Google Scholar were all utilized in the search. The search covered articles published from 2012 to December 2022, encompassing a 10-year timeframe to capture relevant research on moral distress among critical care nurses. In total, 52 articles were included in this systematic review. The findings indicate that personal, caring-related, and organizational factors can influence nurses' moral distress. Before the pandemic, factors including futile and end-of-life care, conflicts with physicians, nurse performance and authority, poor teamwork, decision-making regarding treatment processes and patient care, limited human resources and equipment, medical errors, patient restraints, and nurses' age and work experience affect critical care nurses' moral distress. Similarly, during the COVID-19 pandemic, factors contributing to moral distress include futile and end-of-life care, fear of contracting and spreading COVID-19, decision-making about treatment processes, poor teamwork, and being female. This study revealed that the factors contributing to moral distress were approximately similar in both periods. Futile care and end-of-life issues were critical care nurses' primary causes of moral distress. Implementing prevention strategies and reducing these underlying factors could decrease this major issue and improve the quality of care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SOCIAL interaction ,ETHICS ,PROBABILITY theory - Abstract
This article examines the phenomenon of "moralism" in terms of action-structuring conditions of relationship patterns within which moral actors and their opponents encounter each other in society. The focus is on a selection of ideal-typical interaction frameworks and the resulting constraints on action, on the basis of which the probability of conflict escalation due to moral claims increases for the actors involved. From this perspective, attention is not paid to the value program of morality per se, but rather to the actor-related contextual conditions of social forms of interaction within which moral conflicts are settled in society. Products and artifacts with morally loaded labels (e.g., environmentally friendly) appear to influence people's perceptions and behaviors. Previous studies have shown that desktop lamps labeled “environmentally friendly” can enhance perceived color discrimination and improve certain reading activities compared to a physically identical lamp labeled “conventional.” This effect may occur because people tend to align their behavior with moral principles. The present study explored the generalizability and robustness of this label effect by asking participants to make trait judgments of photographed faces. In an experimental design, participants evaluated photos illuminated by a desktop lamp that was either labeled environmentally friendly or not labeled at all. The results revealed that participants assigned more positive traits to individuals in the photographs when the lamp was labeled “environmentally friendly,” particularly those with high altruistic values. The pattern was reversed for participants with low altruistic values. Moreover, participants rated the light from the lamp labeled “environmentally friendly” as more comfortable and claimed that the light increased (perceived) visibility. In conclusion, the source of the light—whether from an environmentally friendly or conventional lamp—affects both the evaluation of the light itself and the judgments made about other individuals. This study explores theoretical explanations for these label effects and discusses their potential implications for pro-environmental interventions.

Future longitudinal qualitative and quantitative research approaches to self-identity work among former service members are warranted.
