The impact of exchange rate (ER) movements on the trade balance has been extensively debated in the literature, with conflicting views on the nature and magnitude of this effect. This paper investigates the relationship between ER movements and trade balance in developing economies, with a specific focus on bilateral analysis involving Pakistan. Employing the Nonlinear Autoregressive Distributed Lag (NARDL) model, our results reveal a symmetric relationship between positive and negative ER changes and the trade balance, showing significant long-term and short-term effects across the panel of developing economies. However, country-specific asymmetries are observed, especially in the cases of India and China, and are more pronounced in each bilateral analysis, whether in the short run or long run. The study findings highlight the critical importance of maintaining a stable exchange rate policy, which can provide policymakers with precise insights into the money market and the broader economy while preventing high volatility and continuous depreciation of domestic currencies. Such measures can mitigate the long-term adverse effects of ER movements on trade agreements. This paper presents a computationally tractable optimization model for cashflow-driven investment where the aim is to find asset portfolios whose future payouts cover given liability payments as well as possible. While current industry solutions are largely based on expected future cash flows, we use a stochastic optimization model that seeks portfolios that give the best possible match across time as well as scenarios. Cashflow matching across scenarios is controlled by risk aversion while the timing is driven by illiquidity of money markets. When illiquidity increases, the hedging strategy quickly shifts towards portfolios suggested by deterministic models, but significant uncertainty remains. The model can incorporate hundreds of quoted instruments in the construction of optimal hedging strategies. The hedging strategies are able to employ any statistical connections between the liabilities and publicly quoted assets. The model is solved with simple Monte Carlo approximations and off-the-shelf convex optimization software. Besides optimal hedging strategies, we find the least cost of hedging which provides a market-consistent valuation based on the current quotes and the liquidity factors as well as the views and risk preferences of the investor/regulator. The approach is illustrated by pricing and hedging defined benefit pension liabilities which depend on uncertain longevity developments and the consumer price index. The hedging strategies are constructed from 128 publicly quoted instruments including index-linked bonds and equities. We find that the optimized hedging strategies achieve lower risk at a lower cost than the strategies obtained by matching expected cashflows. The hedging-based liability valuations are robust with respect to model parameters and the additional risk reduction achieved by optimization does not add much to the overall hedging cost. Domestic cooking is changing the world over. Kitchen technologies and the smartphone transform the way we cook and whom we cook with. Coupled with urbanisation and the shrinking of households, cooking seems to be an increasingly solitary practice. At the same time, these processes did not change who cooks; across the globe it is mostly women who prepare the daily meal for their families. Yet, rather than treating domestic cooking solely as a gender relations issue, this article presents ethnographic research with low-income domestic cooks in Marrakech, Morocco, to argue that unequal generational relations are also important drivers of change in family life. Paradoxically, rather than cook alone or simplify meals, kitchen appliances and social media were employed to continue preparing elaborate family meals. Through a thick description of the preparation of a spread called amlou and of pizza, this article explores why domestic cooking remains centralto idealised notions of womanhood and family life in Marrakech and beyond. It introduces the concept of culinary connectivity to understand how new technologies were employed ininter-generational negotiations of cooking knowledge and power. Moreover, while the crafting of culinary connectivity enables young generations of low-income womento emancipate themselves from age-based power in the home, these practices also enmesh them in new relations of dependence on money and the market. By making cooking central to understanding the (re)production of everyday family life in the context of poverty, this article contributes to cross-cultural studies of food and to regional debates about the family. This study investigates whether some regulatory and contextual features influenced Euro Area listed banks decisions to manage earnings and regulatory capital through discretionary provisions in the period 2013–2018. The new regulation factors are the pressure to increase high-quality regulatory capital (Basel III) and more timely recognition of loan losses (IFRS 9). The contextual features are the intensified banking competition at a national level, and the significant money market pressure. Results demonstrate that the pressure to increase high-quality regulatory capital for banks with lower Common Equity Tier 1 capital (CET1) in year t − 1 is negatively associated with upward earnings and capital management in year t. The more timely recognition of loan losses in year t compared to year t + 1 is negatively associated with upward earnings and capital management in year t. The strengthening of banking competition is positively associated with upward earnings management, but not associated with upward capital management. The increasing money market pressure is negatively associated with upward earnings management, but not associated with upward capital management. This study should be helpful to standard-setters, regulators, investors and academics interested in incentives and constraints to earnings and capital management by providing evidence regarding how listed banks reacted to the regulatory, accounting, and contextual factors, observed holistically during a unique historical period (i.e., 2013–2018) and regulatory setting (i.e., European banking sector). In this paper, we develop a discrete‐time affine option‐pricing model that explicitly incorporates the dynamics of conditional skewness. The new proposed model features different dynamics for conditional skewness and variance. To stress the difference in information, we use alternative realized measures constructed from high‐frequency historical returns to update skewness and variance dynamics. By Fourier inversion, we derive closed‐form option valuation formulas. Empirically, the flexibility that the model offers for conditional skewness as well as high‐frequency information from the underlying asset contribute to superior performance upon benchmark models using S&P 500 index options. Overall, the joint modeling of dynamic conditional skewness and realized measures leads to an out‐of‐sample gain of 12.25% in pricing accuracy. Freezing assets in the banking network cause a credit crunch in the economy. In Iran, due to the bank-oriented financial system, the majority of the financing of the economy is done through the money market. Meanwhile, banks play the main role in equipping and distributing resources in different sectors of the economy, especially supporting the production sector. The evidence shows that the problem of freezing bank assets in the country is relatively severe and the concerns to escape from this impasse are serious. Meanwhile, there are factors inside the bank and outside of it that affect the freezing of assets. In this research, the subject of investigating the impact of momentums in macroeconomic and banking variables on asset freezing in selected banks listed on the Tehran stock exchange in the period of 2010 to 2014 has been addressed, and the estimation of the model has been done using the Panel-Var method. At first, the incidence of asset freezing is estimated using the basis components analysis. Finally, the impact of momentums has been investigated and analyzed in macroeconomic variables and banking variables on asset freezing. This paper's focus is on finding the optimal strategies for a trader who invests in stock, a money market account and an inflation-linked index bond. The stock follows a jump diffusion process and the bond is linked to inflation making the two risky. The optimal strategies are determined on two generations of the life of an investor, that is before the investor dies and after the investor dies. We applied the concept of change of probability measures considering Girsanov's and the Radon–Nikodym theorems. We found the generator of the Backward Stochastic differential equations defined and employed the Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman (HJB) dynamic programming in finding the stochastic optimal controls of interest. Interbank interest rates and Treasury Bill (TB) yields of maturities of three and six months move together, but not 12 months, under a "quantitative and qualitative easing policy." On the other hand, interbank interest rates and TB yields of maturities of 3, 6, and 12 months move together under a "negative interest rate policy." Interbank and TB markets are partially integrated up to the 6‐month maturity as a short‐term money market under a "quantitative and qualitative easing policy," while interbank and TB markets are integrated up to the 12‐month maturity as a short‐term money market under a "negative interest rate policy." This indicates that the arbitrage of interbank and TB markets works. How does the structure of financial intermediaries' liabilities affect their asset holdings? We investigate the consequences of the 2014 money market fund (MMF) reform, which imposed redemption gates and liquidity fees on prime MMFs and forced prime funds marketed to institutional investors to switch from constant to floating net asset value. These changes made prime MMFs' liabilities less money-like. As a consequence, the affected MMFs experienced an increase in flow–performance sensitivity and started taking more risks. The relationship between financial development and economic growth in China is controversial. From this perspective, this article aims to identify this relationship using both capital market and banking intermediation indicators, which were rarely considered in the previous literature. An autoregressive model with staggered lags (ARDL) examines the long-run cointegration relationship between 1980 and 2020. The results suggest that the contribution of different subsectors of the Chinese financial system to economic growth differs. The development of the money market has a negative impact, whereas market capitalization has a positive impact on economic growth in China. Regarding the contribution of the banking system to China's economic growth, the two variables measuring the depth of financial institutions showed opposite impacts in both the short and long term. Regarding important policy implications, regulators need to ensure a pro-growth environment, effectively regulate the informal banking system, and prevent potential financial risks by revising policies. In an attempt to make money markets safer and more resilient, regulators have created new requirements for market participants. Money market funds are now required to file a new N-CR form if a significant event occurs: for example, fund financial support or liquidity fees. We investigate whether fund stakeholders respond to the N-CR filings. We find that investors do not respond to the N-CR filings. However, fund managers, who do not need the filings to learn of the financial support, reduce the weighted average life (WAL) of the funds and increase the daily liquidity available. Commercial surrogacy marketizes life's work. In the era of neo-liberalism, women's work, which is often intimately performed within a heterosexual marriage in exchange of support, now remains a principal avenue to earn money. This form of feminization of labor has led to the emergence of markets for women's reproductive capacities. The present study stems from my ethnographic journey into the lives of the women who work as surrogate mothers in India. The narratives presented in the paper emerge from my prolonged fieldwork in Anand, Gujarat. It engages with the experiences, understandings, and the voices of these women, who I term reproductive laborers, in order to examine the notion of putting one's reproductive capacities in this intimate market for money. As the economy has grown rapidly in recent years, more and more people have begun putting their money into the stock market. Thus, predicting trends in the stock market is regarded as a crucial endeavor, and one that has proven to be more fruitful than others. Profitable investments will result in rising stock prices. Investors face significant difficulties making stock market-related predictions due to the lack of movement and noise in the data. In this paper, a new system for predicting stock market prices is introduced, namely stock market prediction based on deep leaning (SMP-DL). SMP-DL splits into two stages, which are (i) data preprocessing (DP) and (ii) stock price's prediction (SP2). In the first stage, data are preprocessed to obtain cleaned ones through several stages which are detect and reject missing value, feature selection, and data normalization. Then, in the second stage (e.g., SP2), the cleaned data will pass through the used predicted model. In SP2, long short-term memory (LSTM) combined with bidirectional gated recurrent unit (BiGRU) to predict the closing price of stock market. The obtained results showed that the proposed system perform well when compared to other existing methods. As RMSE, MSE, MAE, and R2 values are 0.2883, 0.0831, 0.2099, and 0.9948. This study shows that demand for money is a function not only of interest rate, real exchange rate, and personal consumption but also of fiscal variables like deficit, debt, and foreign-financed debt. It is stable over the short and long run. This study also covers the investigation of policy invariance of money demand, an important issue ignored so far in the existing literature on the demand for money in the United States. It was found that the behavior of agents in the money market changes as the real exchange rate, consumption, and interest rate change. Namely, agents in the money market are forward-looking, and their expectations are formed rationally. This also means that even though the parameters of money demand are stable, according to the stability test results, they can be unstable, as agents adapt their behavior based on any change in the exchange rate, consumption, and/or interest rate. In other words, the contemporaneous real exchange and interest rate variables are not superexogenous in demand for M1, and the contemporaneous consumption is not superexogenous in demand for M2. The objective of this study is to identify challenges encountered by regulators and commercial banks in implementing monetary policy in Bangladesh. The primary data for the research was gathered through interviews with 207 participants from Bangladesh Bank and 19 listed private conventional commercial banks, using a structured questionnaire. The collected data was then analyzed and interpreted using descriptive statistical measures and advanced multivariate techniques, specifically Varimax Rotated Factor Analysis. The study highlights significant challenges for regulators and commercial banks in implementing monetary policy, with a focus on adjusted mean scores. These challenges are ranked from 1 to 29 based on their respective mean scores. The most prominent issue identified is the liquidity trap in the money market, ranked first, while the least practical concern is the central bank's inability to predict the impact of monetary policy on the real level of economic activity, ranked 29th. Additionally, the researcher conducted a ranking of factor variables through Varimax Rotated Factor Analysis. The most crucial factors include economic stability and governance, the inadequate shock absorption capacity of MPS, the absence of a connection to the real economy, consistent policy shifts, regulatory constraints, liquidity constraints posing as government control, and insensitivity of monetary policy. Globalization causes changes and provides convenience in trading activities between countries, exports, and imports. This community service program was conducted for a company engaged in the field of iron trading, which deals with imported products from Japan, America, Europe, China, and Taiwan. The main problem faced by this community service partner was the profit uncertainty due to fluctuations in the foreign exchange market. As a way to avoid currency exchange rate uncertainty, companies can hedge. One of the hedging activities carried out by company management in dealing with fluctuations in foreign exchange rates is the alternative use of derivative instruments. The method for implementing the community service activities was in the form of onsite training which was divided into two sessions. In the first session, the community service team gave a lecture on a general overview of hedging. In the second session, the community service team carried out a simulation of calculating the costs of hedging using appropriate tools. This community service program provides results in the form of developing partner's know-how that provides benefits to mitigate risk through hedging capabilities. Based on the simulation results using the hedging cost calculation tool, partners can see that hedging in the money market is more profitable than forward contracts.

Effect of money market instruments on economic growth of Nigeria from 1993 to 2022 was investigated in this study. Research design adopted for this study is ex-post-facto. Data were obtained from Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Statistical Bulletin to estimate the model. Multiple regression approach was employed to analyse impact of money market instruments on economic growth in Nigeria for the period of the study. From the empirical result obtained, the study conclude that money market enhanced development in Nigeria. It is recommended that CBN create appropriate monetary and fiscal measures which would develop money market for promotion of productive activities and investment thereby improve Nigeria development. In the follow-up to the 1926 political and monetary crisis in France, a new government led by Raymond Poincaré attempted to restore monetary stability by restructuring public debt. A sinking fund was missioned to withdraw short-term public bills from money markets. This policy disorganized the largest Parisian banks of the time, as they relied on these bills to manage their liquidity. Without developed domestic money markets, no other asset could absorb the excess liquidity freed by the withdrawal of these bills, and these leading banks faced a low-rate environment. In search of yield, they expanded their activities abroad a few months before the 1929 crash. These findings renew our understanding of the expansion of France's banking sector in the 1920s. The contribution examines Karl Polanyi's analysis of the fictitiousness of the commodity description of money, and its suitability as a reference for the analysis of the commodification of money within contemporary markets for credit and finance. Any critique of the commodification of money that draws on Polanyi's influential argument should distinguish between two fundamentally different meanings of the occurrence of money as a commodity: the institutional system that makes some commodity money versus the commercial practice that turns money into a commodity. Only a particular strand of Polanyi's analysis provides a point of reference for a comprehensive critique of the commodification of money, rather than the monetization of some type of commodity. Departing from the aspects of Polanyi's analysis that are specific to the political economy of the gold standard, the article draws on Polanyi's material account of the essential contributions of public organization and social convention in the constitution of money. This paper considers the issue of optimal investment and consumption strategies for an investor with stochastic economic factor in a defaultable market. In our model, the price process is composed of a money market account and a default-free risky asset, assuming they rely on a stochastic economic factor described by a diffusion process. A defaultable perpetual bond is depicted by the reduced-form model, and both the default risk premium and the default intensity of it rely on the stochastic economic factor. Our goal is to maximize the infinite horizon expected discounted power utility of the consumption. Applying the dynamic programming principle, we derive the Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman (HJB) equations and analyze them using the so-called sub-super solution method to prove the existence and uniqueness of their classical solutions. Conflicts of interest exist in both professional and private settings, and everyone experiences them from time to time. If a person harboring a conflict acts on it--meaning the person acts against interests she ought to uphold--innocent parties may be harmed, Accordingly, the key to addressing a conflict in most settings is to eliminate it, such as by prohibiting conflicted behavior or recusing oneselffrom a deliberative process. However, conflicts of interest have a special character in the securities realm, both because they are ubiquitous given financial firms' myriad competing interests and because the goal of the agency charged with addressing conflicts in the securities context, the US. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), is not to eliminate them but, rather, merely to mitigate them, tempering them for the benefit of securities regulation's dual objectives: investor protection and capital formation. This approach reflects the recognition that, while eliminating conflicts of interests helps protect investors, it can impede the cause of capital investment and growth. Accordingly, the SEC's challenge in regulating financial firms is to strike a balance between these two objectives, allowing firms to act on conflicts of interest in the name of capital formation but simultaneously restricting those conflicted actions in the name of protecting investors. Yet, as this Article argues, the agency has not always gotten the balance correct, at times erring on the side of permitting too much conflicted activity and at times erring on the side of permitting too little. Since the pioneering role of Kenya's mobile money service – M-PESA, a consortium of international development agencies, philanthropists, academics, tech corporations and governments – have led an optimistic account of a poverty-eradicating, prosperity-spreading power of financial technology (fintech) in the global South. In contrast, a growing critical IPE literature has demonstrated that the optimistic accounts are broad-brush and misleading. Drawing from recent theorization on digital financialisation and Marxian conceptualization of capital accumulation, this article shifts the focus of the Kenya-centered critical response to Ghana, the second largest mobile money market in Africa. Relying on quantitative data from the Bank of Ghana, and qualitative data from 42 semi-structured interviews, the article provides evidence to show that the mobile money boom in Ghana is underpinned by (1) customer indebtedness from digital microloans, (2) high transaction costs, (3) excessive taxation, and (4) a prevalence of dormant accounts. Collectively, the findings confirm the wider critical literature suggesting that, far from ending poverty and inspiring prosperity, the fintech-financial-inclusion agenda in Africa is opening new frontiers for a sustained and intensified capitalist exploitation of working-class labor in the continent. The author examines the different methods of volatility estimation widely used among market practitioners. These techniques range from the simple to the complex and incorporate varying degrees of backward- and forward-looking data. The author discusses the characteristics of asset class returns that make volatility inherently more predictive than returns themselves. He compares a variety of volatility estimation models, assessing their characteristics and predictive abilities across different asset classes and market environments. A common feature of recent financial crises has been the 'drying up' of financial market liquidity. Increased attention, therefore, has been directed to central bank policy tools which can affect liquidity, even as policy rates approach the zero lower bound. This study examines the role of the European Central Bank (ECB) Governing Council's communication in influencing financial market liquidity. A specialized lexicon is used to extract sentiments on (i) monetary policy and (ii) economic outlook from ECB Governing Council statements between 2006 and 2016. The analysis reveals that ECB sentiments on 'economic outlook' are more consequential for money market (MM) liquidity than for currency, equity and bond (CEB) liquidity. Sentiments on 'monetary policy' produce a statistically significant effect on CEB liquidity; with more 'hawkish' sentiments leading to declines in liquidity. Volatility in global financial markets, however, plays a relatively more robust role than ECB sentiments in influencing market liquidity. The results are corroborated using an alternative and more generic quantifier called the Loughran and McDonald (LM) sentiment quantifier. The specialized lexicon provides richer inferences than the LM quantifier, however, since it captures the 'hawkishness' or 'dovishness' of monetary policy tone and the 'positivity' or 'negativity' of the Governing Council's sentiments on economic outlook. The history and development of fiat currencies is reviewed, their strengths and weaknesses are presented, causing market stability or instability and recession, respectively. Attention is paid to the global processes affecting the traditional money markets and the accumulated experience of the institutions to deal with the crises. The increasing digitization in the industry, the economy and the daily life of every single person inevitably gives rise to the need for the use of digital currency to guarantee transactions between individual parties. The idea for these still unrealized needs was born nearly 40 years ago, and the first realization took place in 1996, when e-gold was born. Today, we have hundreds of cryptocurrencies that still operate in an unregulated market, and their legal status still varies from country to country. Objective/context: The boom-and-bust of New World slavery in the nineteenth century has always been a major topic of scholarship. In this essay, I suggest that the literature devoted to this theme, the so-called “capitalism and slavery debate,” has made capital invisible as a category of analysis due to its over-reliance on classical and neoclassical economics. As a result, slavery itself has been poorly historicized. My purpose is to put forth an alternative framework to restore the historicity of capital and slavery. Methodology: The article explores critical value theory to conceptualize capital and capitalism in historically meaningful terms. It argues that value creation is never confined to one country. It requires a historically transnational social formation that turns concrete labor into abstract labor and use-values into commodities through the multi-scale operatives of world money and world markets. The history of slavery should be narrated within this broader globalizing setting. Originality: The article’s claim is that the global value relations of industrial capital redetermined spatial relations between town and country, capital and labor, and production and consumption, engendering overlapping layers of a world geography of accumulation that both stimulated and challenged slavery. Conclusions: While most scholars present the relation between slavery and capitalism as constant for the period 1780-1880, I conclude that New World slavery went through two moments of boom-and-bust (c.1780-c.1820 and c.1830-1880), which were formed through, respectively, the global value relations of cotton production and coal-and-iron industrialism. In this paper, we present a robust predictive comparison of several continuous-time multi-factor models in the context of interbank rates. Recognizing the specific dynamics of the short-term segment of the yield curve, we examine the U.S. money market by extending two continuous-time frameworks with different factor structures, the Chan-Karolyi-Longstaff-Sanders (CKLS) model and the arbitrage-free dynamic Nelson-Siegel (AFDNS) model. A battery of formal forecasting accuracy tests is employed to select a subset of superior predictive models. Despite a better goodness-of-fit measure, additional factors improve the forecasting performance only for the CKLS family. With implications for monetary policy formulation, we found evidence of two separate maturity segments as the three-factor AFDNS and the five-factor CKLS models outperform parsimonious benchmarks in predicting the interbank rates for very short maturities. Our comparative forecasting results are re-confirmed with stronger out-of-sample performance for the five-factor CKLS model when the post global financial crisis sub-sample is analyzed. Hot money is generally associated with economic and financial turmoil in emerging economies. In this backdrop, a number of studies document the causal links between hot money and financial markets. Accordingly, the study examines the causal relationship among hot money, equities, and real estate assets in the small-scale economy of Pakistan. For this purpose, we employ various time series techniques such as the JJ Co-integration test, Granger causality tests, Impulse Response Functions (IRF), and Variance Decomposition Analysis (VDC). The findings validate the long-term association between speculative funds and underlying investment markets. The results uncover unidirectional causality from investment markets to hot money in Pakistan. However, the lack of a bi-directional relationship among the underlying variables indicates that hot money is not a major driver of soaring prices in equities and real estate assets. Alternatively, developing the underlying markets attracts speculative cash inflows into the economy. The findings of the study highlight some useful implications for investors and regulators. For instance, the study's findings present valuable insights for international investors seeking diversification opportunities in small-scale economies such as Pakistan. We study investor redemptions and portfolio rebalancing decisions of prime money market mutual funds (MMFs) during the Eurozone crisis. We find that sophisticated investors selectively acquire information about MMFs' risk exposures to Europe, which leads managers to withdraw funding from information-sensitive European issuers. That is, MMF managers, particularly those serving the most sophisticated investors, selectively adjust their portfolio risk exposures to avoid information-sensitive European risks, while maintaining or increasing risk exposures to other regions. This mechanism helps to explain the occurrence of selective "dry-ups" in debt markets where delegation is common and returns to information production are usually low. At present, check transactions are one of the most common forms of money transfer in the market. The information for check exchange is printed using magnetic ink character recognition (MICR), widely used in the banking industry, primarily for processing check transactions. However, the magnetic ink card reader is specialized and expensive, resulting in general accounting departments or bookkeepers using manual data registration instead. An organization that deals with parts or corporate services might have to process 300 to 400 checks each day, which would require a considerable amount of labor to perform the registration process. The cost of a single-sided scanner is only 1/10 of the MICR; hence, using image recognition technology is an economical solution. In this study, we aim to use multiple features for character recognition of E13B, comprising ten numbers and four symbols. For the numeric part, we used statistical features such as image density features, geometric features, and simple decision trees for classification. The symbols of E13B are composed of three distinct rectangles, classified according to their size and relative position. Using the same sample set, MLP, LetNet-5, Alexnet, and hybrid CNN-SVM were used to train the numerical part of the artificial intelligence network as the experimental control group to verify the accuracy and speed of the proposed method. The results of this study were used to verify the performance and usability of the proposed method. Our proposed method obtained all test samples correctly, with a recognition rate close to 100%. A prediction time of less than one millisecond per character, with an average value of 0.03 ms, was achieved, over 50 times faster than state-of-the-art methods. The accuracy rate is also better than all comparative state-of-the-art methods. This paper evaluates the roles of short- and long-term private and government interest rates and inside and outside money in the monetary transmission mechanism. With money and credit markets present, changes in monetary policy set off a chain of relative price and portfolio adjustments affecting output and prices. I study interest rate and money supply rules within this monetary transmission mechanism by estimating several Markov-switching Bayesian vector autoregressions (MS-BVARs) on a quarterly U.S. sample from 1960 to 2018. The best-fit MS-BVAR restricts MS to the impact and lag coefficients of the monetary policy and money demand regressions as well as to the stochastic volatilities (SVs) of the structural shocks. Estimates of this MS-BVAR yield evidence of a SV regime which coincides with NBER-dated recessions. This MS-BVAR also identifies a regime switch in the Fed's interest rate rule and banks' demand for outside money around the dot-com bust of 2000 and again from the 2007–2009 recession and financial crisis to the end of the sample. Counterfactual simulations show the 2007–2009 recession and financial crisis would have not been as deep and long-lasting if the fed funds rate had been as low as −8 % in 2009 and remained negative from 2010 through 2016.
