ABSTRACTThis paper focuses on Deep-Seated Gravitational Slope Deformations (DSGSDs) identified in the Molise region (Italy), along the central-southern sector of the Apennines chain. These phenomena were detected and mapped through a combination of aerial-photo interpretation, morphological analyses, and field surveys, integrated through satellite SAR interferometry (InSAR). The obtained general map is organized in different sections: inventory map with identification of DSGSDs and main geological and orographic features, geostructural scheme, representative cross sections, list and characteristics of DSGSDs, geomorphometric maps, landslides map, and seismotectonic setting. This study allowed us to realize a complete inventory of DSGSDs in the Molise region and define the main characteristics of each phenomenon. The Fortore Valley Project, which began in 2005 and is still ongoing, aims to create an archaeological map of the Fortore Valley. Several intensive and extensive survey campaigns were carried out in the territory of the middle valley. More than 100 km2 have been surveyed and more than 300 sites identified. This contribution analyzes the collected data and proposes a model of population evolution based on a GIS spatial analysis and a preliminary study of the finds. The artifacts found between 2005 and 2006 in the territory of Occhito Lake (Macchia Valfortore) provide a case study for understanding settlement patterns in the Fortore Valley. This project proposal is for the application of IT tools in order to consider a “cross-media” translation of data obtained, so that they can be used as an alternative to simple textual consultation, with respect to the reconstruction of the geography and history of Venetian works of art in the Adriatic regions of the Kingdom of Naples between the Middle Ages and the early modern age. The overall aim of the work is namely to carry out an analysis of Venetian presences and influences in the artistic production of Abruzzo, Molise and Apulia, also considering the transversal relations of this area with the Balkan regions under Venetian rule.

The aim of the contribution is to describe an innovative approach, of a “territorialist” perspective, to support the municipalities of the internal areas that for decades have been living processes of inexorable inner abandonment and depopulation. The identification of the inner areas of the Country, starts from a polycentric interpretation of the Italian territory, consisting of a network of municipalities or aggregations, around which gravitate areas characterized by different levels of spatial periphery. These areas represent a great national question, territories with demographic problems, but strongly polycentric and with a widespread historicalterritorial heritage, in some cases they show prospects of recovery such as to be encouraged and taken as a model to follow. Starting from these assumptions it is proposed through the methodology implemented by SNAI (National Strategy for Inner Areas), the experience of a pilot area present in Molise: the Matese. The results of this design challenge are analyzed through the description of the actions put in place in order to restore the basic services that, when absent, have led the population to abandon these territories. We live well in a “pole” where there is a complete scholastic offer, an essential level of health care (and social) and a station from which to reach the transport network for social mobility. The municipalities of the inner areas thus become a laboratory for experimenting with new socioeconomic models capable of ensuring better liveability for citizens and reconstructing local economic systems aimed at infra and inter-territorial solidarity, instead of the competitive model that has produced decline and marginalization. La solidarietà al posto della competizione: una strategia per la rinascita delle Aree Interne del Molise L'obiettivo del contributo è quello di descrivere, un approccio innovativo, di ottica territorialista a supporto dei comuni delle aree interne che ormai da decenni vivono processi d'inesorabile abbandono e spopolamento. L'individuazione delle Aree Interne del Paese parte da una lettura policentrica del territorio italiano, costituito da una rete di comuni o aggregazioni, attorno ai quali gravitano aree caratterizzate da diversi livelli di perifericità spaziale. Tali aree rappresentano una grande questione nazionale, territori con problemi demografici, ma fortemente policentriche e con un diffuso patrimonio storico-territoriale, in alcuni casi mostrano prospettive di ripresa tali da essere incoraggiate ed essere prese come modello da seguire. Partendo da questi presupposti viene proposta attraverso la metodologia messa in atto dalla SNAI, l'esperienza di un’area pilota presente in Molise: il Matese. I risultati di questa sfida progettuale vengono analizzati attraverso la descrizione delle azioni messe in campo al fine di ripristinare i servizi di base che, laddove assenti, hanno spinto la popolazione ad abbandonare tali territori. I comuni delle Aree Interne divengono così un laboratorio di sperimentazione di nuovi modelli socio-economici in grado di assicurare una migliore vivibilità per i cittadini e ricostruire sistemi economici locali mirati alla solidarietà infra e inter-territoriale, invece del modello competitivo che ha prodotto declino e marginalizzazione.

The abandonment phenomenon in Italy over the past fifty years has been greatest in minor centres, directly proportional to their concentration in the various regional territories. Abruzzo and Molise are significant from this point of view. In these regions, the proportion of minor centres exceeds 90%; it includes mainly mountain villages where abandonment is the distinctive feature and reflects a widespread and fragmented phenomenon. Although barely detectable in municipal statistics, because of the agricultural and pastoral tradition, which until relatively recently had withstood economic and social ups and downs, it is seen in numerous districts and rural villages scattered throughout the territory, escaping detection in broad surveys. Both regions also continue to suffer from the aftermath of recent earthquakes: in 2002 in Molise, where reconstruction has not yet been fully completed after almost twenty years, and in 2009 and again in 2015-2016 in L'Aquila, when the Abruzzi provinces were battered again after being already severely tried and where reconstruction is still uncertain. This contribution uses statistical data and the vast literature on the subject produced over decades of research and studies on the regions, to provide a foretaste of a soon-to-be-published volume, and an update on the local situation of abandonment, analysing the causes and effects in order to consider a possible future. The occasion is valuable not only for a constructive and beneficial comparison with other Italian and foreign situations, but also to construct a dynamic, multi-scalar approach capable of emancipating itself from highly evocative one-off situations, and open to a broader scale of recovery for the entire territory and to network individual local regions. Luoghi dell’abbandono. I centri minori dell’Abruzzo e del Molise L’abbandono insediativo che è in corso in Italia da circa cinquant’anni ha trovato, come è noto, il suo luogo di elezione nei centri minori, con un’entità direttamente proporzionale alla concentrazione di questi nei vari territori regionali. L’Abruzzo e il Molise costituiscono una realtà significativa da questo punto di vista. Il numero dei centri minori, prevalentemente montani, supera qui il 90%: l’abbandono ne è la cifra distintiva ed è solo la spia di un fenomeno diffuso e frammentario, difficilmente rintracciabile attraverso le statistiche comunali, poiché la tradizione agricola e pastorale, che fino a tempi relativamente recenti ne ha retto le sorti economiche e sociali, si è espressa attraverso numerose contrade e frazioni rurali sparse sul territorio, che sfuggono alle rilevazioni statistiche a maglia larga. Su entrambe le regioni pesano inoltre i postumi degli ultimi terremoti, quello del 2002 in Molise, la cui ricostruzione dopo quasi vent’anni non è stata ancora del tutto completata, e quelli del 2009 dell’Aquila, e poi ancora del 2015-2016, che hanno infierito su province abruzzesi già fortemente provate e la cui vicenda ricostruttiva è ancora incerta. Sulla scorta dei dati statistici e della vasta letteratura sull’argomento, prodotta in decenni di ricerche e studi sul territorio delle due regioni, il presente contributo intende fornire l’anticipazione di un volume specifico di prossima pubblicazione, per fare il punto della situazione locale relativa all’abbandono, analizzandone le cause e gli effetti come base per prefigurarne un futuro possibile. L’occasione è preziosa non solo per un confronto costruttivo e salutare con altre situazioni italiane e straniere ma anche per la costruzione di un percorso dinamico e multiscalare capace di emanciparsi da situazioni puntuali, per quanto suggestive, e aprirsi alla scala più ampia del recupero del territorio e della messa in rete delle singole realtà locali.

The interior areas of Abruzzi and Molise are littered with abandoned centres, primarily small towns and villages. We see total abandonment, mainly in mountainous areas. Partial abandonment impacts almost all of the rest of the territory, including places that had previously undergone rapid industrialization like Val Vibrata, Val di Sangro and Valle del Trigno. As in the rest of the country, here innumerable experiences are underway to limit abandonment and revive ancient settlements. However, the results have not always lived up to expectations. Tourism and cultural promotion was behind well-known interventions in S. Stefano di Sessanio, in L’Aquila, where a talented entrepreneur from the north bought the village, aiming to transform its old houses into rooms for tourists, and the similar case of Castel del Giudice in Campobasso. The same can be said for the experiments underway, especially during the summer season, in Castelbasso and Ripattoni di Bellante in Teramo, where cultural initiatives and artistic promotion are testing forms of territorial marketing. Based on ongoing research and the soon-to-be-published volume, this contribution reports on attempts to revitalise abandoned centres in Abruzzo and Molise, discussing their limits and objectives. The objectives include pairing the recovery of housing with the design of abandonment and selection of large-scale museum criteria in the territory, to draw the areas back into the network with their landscape and promotion of their residual identity. Esperienze dall’Abruzzo e dal Molise Soprattutto nei piccoli comuni e nelle frazioni, le aree interne dell’Abruzzo e del Molise sono disseminate di centri abbandonati. L’abbandono totale riguarda soprattutto le zone montane; quello parziale quasi tutto il resto del territorio, e anche i luoghi che hanno conosciuto fenomeni di rapida industrializzazione come la val Vibrata, la val di Sangro e la valle del Trigno. Come nel resto del Paese, anche qui sono numerose le esperienze in atto per arginare il fenomeno dell’abbandono e rivitalizzare antichi insediamenti con esiti però non sempre all’altezza delle aspettative. Il turismo e la promozione culturale hanno veicolato i noti interventi realizzati a S. Stefano di Sessanio, in provincia dell’Aquila, comprato da un abile imprenditore del nord per trasformare le sue vecchie case in stanze per turisti, e quello, simile, di Castel del Giudice in provincia di Campobasso. Lo stesso si può dire per le esperienze in corso, a Castelbasso e Ripattoni di Bellante in provincia di Teramo, dove iniziative culturali e di promozione artistica tentano forme di marketing territoriale. Sulla scorta delle ricerche in corso e del volume in fase di pubblicazione, il contributo intende fare il punto sui tentativi di rivitalizzazione dei centri abbandonati dell’Abruzzo e del Molise per discuterne limiti e obiettivi. Tra gli obiettivi c’è anche la possibilità di affiancare, al recupero abitativo, la progettazione dell’abbandono e la scelta di criteri di musealizzazione su larga scala del territorio, rimesso in rete col paesaggio e valorizzato nelle sue identità residue.

The Molise and Apulia subsurface exploration has found clastic calcareous layers at the top of the Mesozoic—Miocene carbonate sequence and within the Middle Pliocene turbidites. The first are the result of Karst—fissures and crushing on the structural highs and mass flows at the base of fault slopes. Within the turbidites a biocalcarenitic horizon IS an electric good marker which proves an event of a shelf build up. It corresponds to the Middle Pliocene gap widely developed in the Apennines.

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are a key economic sector in Molise, a region in central Italy, characterized by a high level of rurality. This paper uses descriptive survey research to discuss the findings of a study of the innovation process in a sample of SMEs located in rural areas of Molise. It explores the aims of the innovation and any barriers encountered. Data were collected from 30 respondents with the aid of an on-line questionnaire. The sample was drawn from a database made available by the Chambers of Commerce in Molise. The database includes 165 firms that, in recent years, have introduced innovative technologies. The findings of the study revealed that there is a high level of awareness of the importance of technology among the managing bodies of SMEs. Most rural firms prefer to use new production technologies and new processes, rather than invest in research and development activities. Furthermore, there is a low propensity to set up partnerships with other enterprises along the supply chain and to participate in collaborative networks designed to stimulate innovation. Most owners and/or managers interviewed lamented the lack of financial resources necessary to make technological innovations. They also highlighted the considerable difficulty in accessing public and private funding. The paper concludes with some brief prospects by recommending a few implications for policy. The results of this study are important for both researchers as well as those involved in small business (including government, agencies and owner/managers).

The authors present the results of the study on the lithic industry collected during the project of the Biferno Valley Survey, conducted by Graeme Barker in the ’70 years in the Molise region. This contribution is aimed to deepen the study of the lithic tools with a different methodological approach, considering the techno-tipological characteristics of the finds, compared with the geomorphological context. The analyzed lithic assemblage embraces a period of time ranging from the Lower Paleolithic to the Neolithic. The data set underline a high methodological variability, which affected the lithic tools especially from the Middle Paleolithic period. This preliminary investigation widens to new perspectives of research, which, through a series of interdisciplinary contributions, will propose a new model of population and mobility at micro and macro-regional levels.

This document is divided into four sections. The first section, the introduction, analyses the transformations that the cultural sector has been undergoing in recent years driven by the development of digital tools and accelerated by Covid-19. The second section describes the cultural heritage of Molise in terms of both its tangible and intangible components. The third section shows the digital strategy developed by the Regional Secretariat for Molise in order to spread the knowledge of the cultural heritage of Molise. Included is the description of the new website www.molise.beniculturali.it, of the nine interactive maps, of the digital comic book Once upon a time in Molise, of the video Molise Land of Wonders, and of a series of online books. The fourth section is dedicated to the conclusions which stress the way in which the projects discussed have contributed to the spread of Molise's cultural heritage and opened the way to further future transformations). The spiderfauna of Molise includes 98 species belonging to 64 genera and 21 families; 48 species are firstly reported for this region, 19 are earlier record confirmed and 31 are earlier record to be confirmed. Italy is one of the European countries most affected by biological invasions. In this study, we focused on the impact of Acacia saligna, an Australian invasive plant species, on the coastal ecosystem’s ecology and biodiversity along the sandy coasts of Molise (southern Italy). We analyzed data from 61 vegetation plots recorded in coastal pine forest and Mediterranean scrub habitats of Molise throughout the preparatory actions of the “LIFE Maestrale” project (NAT/IT/000262). In order to study the ecological impact of Acacia saligna comparing invaded and non-invaded areas, we first assigned the Ellenberg’s indicator values to each plant species, which were then used to relate the presence of Acacia saligna with ecological characteristics of sites through a generalized linear model (GLM). Our results showed a significant positive relationship between the presence of Acacia saligna and high levels of soil nutrients and, on the contrary, a negative relationship with the presence of mesophilic species, which are typical of the community interest habitats of pine forest (2270*). The use of ecological indicators is effective to pinpoint the ecological effects of biological invasions, as well as to evaluate habitat conservation state and to identify vulnerable native species.

The sociological analysis intends to offer some food for thought on the socio-cultural qualities of the craft industry in Molise, part of the processes of economic and social development that characterise the local regional system. In this context, the work of the craftsman in Molise is closely linked to a kind of job still capable of building, in a globalised society, a social knowledge that is handed down from generation to generation, whose contribution generates, in the regional community, a social identity and a sense of territorial belonging.

Hoplia walterrossii is a species endemic to Molise, Southern Italy, with completely unknown ecology and virtually known only on the holotype, few additional specimens having been merely listed in a recent paper. Following the discovery of various new populations in the field and of old unpublished samples, we provide new information on ecology, phenology, distribution, and morphology, including the description of the female, so far unknown. H. walterrossii is associated to alluvial soils near the coast, and to lowland floodplains, with apparent tolerance for temporarily flooded areas. Adults are active for about one month, from early May to early June, and have been observed mostly on leaves of canes and on young poplars, never on flowers. An attempt of formal IUCN status assignment is provided, giving the species the “Endagered” status. Suitable habitats for H. walterrossii are small residual meadows and, in particular, wetlands which have been subjected to a recent strong reduction due to human activity. This process, that started centuries ago, is still in progress, in spite of the formal identification of these areas as sites of conservation concern.

Landslides are one of the most relevant geohazards worldwide, causing direct and indirect costs and fatalities. Italy is one of the countries most affected by mass movements, and the Molise region, southern Italy, is known to be susceptible to erosional processes and landslides. In January 2003, a landslide in the municipality of Agnone, in the Colle Lapponi-Piano Ovetta (CL-PO) territory, occurred causing substantial damage to both structures and civil infrastructure. To investigate the evolution of the landslide-affected catchment over approximately one century, different data were taken into account: (i) literature information at the beginning of the twentieth century; (ii) historical sets of aerial optical photographs to analyse the geomorphological evolution from 1945 to 2003; (iii) SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) data from the ERS1/2, ENVISAT and COSMO-SkyMed satellites to monitor the displacement from 1992 to 2015; (iv) traditional measurements carried out through geological and geomorphological surveys, inclinometers and GPS campaigns to characterize the geological setting of the area; and (v) recent optical photographs of the catchment area to determine the enlargement of the landslide. Using the structure from motion technique, a 3D reconstruction of each set of historical aerial photographs was made to investigate the geomorphological evolution and to trace the boundary of the mass movements. As a result, the combination of multitemporal and multitechnique analysis of the evolution of the CL-PO landslide enabled an assessment of the landslide expansion, which resulted in a maximum length of up to approximately 1500 m. A complete investigation of the past and present deformational sequences of the area was performed to potentially plan further mitigation and prevention strategies to avoid possible reactivations. This paper addresses the value of re-surveys in two different regions with different cultural and landscape formation histories: the Upper Volturno basin in Molise (the hinterland of the colony of Aesernia, modern Isernia), and the Melfese area in Basilicata (the hinterland of the colony of Venusia, modern Venosa). In these areas, we compare legacy datasets with newly acquired survey data in the same areas, and compare the results by means of statistics (Chi-square) and visual exploration (cartographical and GIS-based analysis). The statistical comparisons of these different surveys show that site numbers may change significantly. This paper explores the reasons for these dynamics in the archaeological surface record by focussing especially on landscape changes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Le neoplasie testicolari sono piuttosto frequenti nel cane e condividono alcune caratteristiche con quelle umane, rendendole un potenziale modello in patologia comparata. Si riportano i dati relativi ai tumori testicolari del cane conferiti ed esaminati Istituto G. Caporale nel corso degli ultimi 12 anni, dal 2000 al 2011. In totale, sono stati diagnosticati 183 tumori: 108 seminomi, 37 sertoliomi, 18 tumori a cellule interstiziali del Leydig, 10 tumori misti, 9 neoplasie primitive di diversa natura una metastasi. La raccolta dettagliata di informazioni (segnala-mento, anamnesi, manifestazioni cliniche e follow-up) messa in atto, consentirà di valutare al meglio il comportamento biologico delle neoplasie animali il potenziale oncogeno di specifici fattori, sia intrinseci che estrinseci.

Canine testicular tumours frequently occur and share relevant features with their human counterparts, thus being a putative model in comparative oncology. The authors present data on canine testicular tumours submitted to the Istituto G. Caporale over the last 12 years. In total, 183 testicular neoplasms were diagnosed: 108 seminomas, 37 Sertoli cell tumours, 18 interstitial Leydig cell tumours, 10 mixed tumours, 9 other primary tumours and one metastatic neoplasm. A systematic and more detailed collection of data (signalling, history, clinical signs and follow-up) enables a better evaluation of clinical and biological features of animal tumours, as well as a clear assessment of the real impact, if any, of specific intrinsic and extrinsic risk factors.

The 7 th SISEF National Congress: participation and scientific contents. The participation and scientific contents of the 7th SISEF National Congress, recently held at the University of Molise (Campobasso, Italy), are summarized and briefly discussed.

The biomass of understory vegetation has an important role in several forest ecosystem processes, though it is not frequently included in forest inventory programs, which are commonly focused on the tree component. The objective of the study is to test a fast procedure for obtaining an accurate estimation of three components of the aboveground understory vegetation: herbaceous, bush, regeneration. For such a purpose a Volume Index has been calculated on the basis of the product between the percent coverage of vegetation and the average height of the three different components of understory vegetation. The index has been quantified in twenty clusters of four squared plots 1 m2 wide; clusters were located in two study areas in the northern part of Molise Region (southeastern Italy). For each plot, the dry biomass has been collected and weighted, and then transformed in carbon stock. This study presents the field protocol and the achieved results in terms of measured aboveground understorey carbon stock in six different forest and pre-forest types (the average carbon stock was 1.19 t C ha-1) and correlation between Volume Index and carbon stock (the Pearson’s correlation index was 0.8 on 309 field observations).

Recent and ongoing technological developments make the application of unmanned aerial platforms increasingly accessible for archaeological research and heritage management. While the effectiveness of drones for documentation purposes of standing monuments and excavations has been amply demonstrated in recent years, there are also promising developments in their application for landscape archaeological projects. In this paper, the potential use of drones for the detection of subsurface archaeological remains in mountainous, Mediterranean landscapes is explored by presenting a case study in Molise, South Italy. In this rugged, Apennine area, traditional aerial archaeology approaches have in the past failed to yield good results as regards the detection and documentation of subsurface structures through crop marks. Recent experiments with low altitude, both vertical and oblique aerial photography using small, consumer friendly UAV's drones have, however, produced important and clearly readable information about the existence and extent of subsurface features in a series of sites in the Tappino Valley in Molise. This paper presents the first results of a case study of a complex rural site of the Classical-Roman period. Consequently, the paper discusses the potential value and feasibility of UAV's for archaeological research and cultural heritage management. In particular, the potential of the integration of UAV imagery in existing standard landscape archaeological research methods, such as field survey and geophysical prospection, is discussed. It is concluded that the targeted use of small remote controlled aerial platforms can significantly add to existing practices of both site-recognition and heritage management in the heavily threatened Mediterranean landscapes, and that it can be feasibly and efficiently integrated within standard methodologies applied in field survey projects.
