A 'troubled employee' is defined as one whose productivity level has declined by 25 percent or more. It is estimated that 18 percent of the U.S. work force is comprised of troubled employees, and most of these are drug abusers or alcoholics. Internal auditors are advised in methods for detecting these individuals and helping them to recover. Troubled employees' symptoms are described in detail, including: phobic reactions, hypochondria, neurasthenic disorders, antisocial behavior, passive-aggressive tendencies, compulsiveness, paranoia, schizophrenia, depression and suicidal tendencies. Physical signs of substance abuse are also discussed.
