Abstract

Earth observation technologies, such as optical imaging and synthetic aperture radar (SAR), provide excellent means to monitor ever-growing urban environments continuously. Notably, in the case of large-scale disasters (e.g., tsunamis and earthquakes), in which a response is highly time-critical, images from both data modalities can complement each other to accurately convey the full damage condition in the disaster's aftermath. However, due to several factors, such as weather and satellite coverage, it is often uncertain which data modality will be the first available for rapid disaster response efforts. Hence, novel methodologies that can utilize all accessible EO datasets are essential for disaster management. In this study, we have developed a global multisensor and multitemporal dataset for building damage mapping. We included building damage characteristics from three disaster types, namely, earthquakes, tsunamis, and typhoons, and considered three building damage categories. The global dataset contains high-resolution optical imagery and high-to-moderate-resolution multiband SAR data acquired before and after each disaster. Using this comprehensive dataset, we analyzed five data modality scenarios for damage mapping: single-mode (optical and SAR datasets), cross-modal (pre-disaster optical and post-disaster SAR datasets), and mode fusion scenarios. We defined a damage mapping framework for the semantic segmentation of damaged buildings based on a deep convolutional neural network algorithm. We compare our approach to another state-of-the-art baseline model for damage mapping. Abstract

We propose a framework that estimates inundation depth (maximum water level) and debris-flow-induced topographic deformation from remote sensing imagery by integrating deep learning and numerical simulation. A water and debris flow simulator generates training data for various artificial disaster scenarios. We show that regression models based on Attention U-Net and LinkNet architectures trained on such synthetic data can predict the maximum water level and topographic deformation from a remote sensing-derived change detection map and a digital elevation model. The proposed framework has an inpainting capability, thus mitigating the false negatives that are inevitable in remote sensing image analysis. Our framework breaks the limits of remote sensing and enables rapid estimation of inundation depth and topographic deformation, essential information for emergency response, including rescue and relief activities. We conduct experiments with both synthetic and real data for two disaster events that caused simultaneous flooding and debris flows and demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach quantitatively and qualitatively.

Abstract

One of the resistant mechanisms of EGFR‐TKIs is BRAF V600E mutation. Herein, we present the case of a 54‐year‐old Japanese female who underwent a right middle lobectomy for pathological stage IIB lung adenocarcinoma. One year and nine months after the surgery, she developed multiple intrapulmonary metastases. Osimertinib was administered due to EGFR exon 19 deletion. Although all intrapulmonary metastases had shrunk, the nodule at the superior segment of left lung enlarged after postoperative 4 years. The tumour was resected and BRAF V600E mutation and exon 19 deletion were detected. Three months after treatment with dabrafenib and trametinib instead of osimertinib, the remaining intrapulmonary metastases increased again. The continued growth of the metastatic foci even after EGFR‐TKI may indicate an acquired resistance. Thus, a repeat biopsy will aid in confirming the new gene expression. It should have been necessary to administer an additional dose of dabrafenib and trametinib without discontinuing osimertinib. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The Mw 9.0 Tohoku-oki Japan earthquake and many of its subsequent aftershocks and triggered events were very well recorded, providing opportunity for detailed study of source, path, and site effects. In previous work, we utilized mainshock data to demonstrate faster attenuation with distance in backarc than in forearc regions, positive event terms for high frequency intensity measures for multiple ground motion prediction models, and minimal scaling of site amplification with Vs30 at high frequencies. In this paper, we consider two subsequent events, one Mw 6.7 on the plate interface that ruptured in the mainshock and one Mw 6.3 inland from the volcanic front, to examine if similar ground motion features are apparent from these data sets. We continue to find evidence for the divergence in attenuation rate in forearc and backarc regions, despite the fact that the events are located on opposite sides of the volcanic front. The site response for these events does not appear to follow previously observed patterns for Japan, being relatively similar to Vs30-scaling in active crustal regions generally.

Abstract

Background: Positron emission tomography（PET） is the standard method for metabolic and quantitative evaluation of therapeutic response to chemotherapy in solid tumors. This study determined the ability of PET parameters used in combination in predicting recurrence-free survival（RFS）after neoadjuvant chemotherapy （NAC）and operation for esophageal cancer. Methods: This single-center retrospective study included 96 patients who underwent 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose-PET/computed tomography before and after NAC. Maximum standardised uptake value（SUVmax）after NAC and the rate of change in SUVmax following NAC（ΔSUVmax）were determined to examine their relationship with postoperative recurrence and clinicopathological factors. Results: Receiver operating characteristic curves, with recurrence after NAC as the event, were used to determine optimal cut-off SUVmax and ΔSUVmax of 6.8 and 45.7, respectively. Using these cut-off values, the patients were classified into four groups: Group A, SUVmax > 6.8 and ΔSUVmax ≤ 45.7; Group B, SUVmax > 6.8 and ΔSUVmax > 45.7; Group C, SUVmax ≤ 6.8 and ΔSUVmax ≤ 45.7; and Group D, SUVmax ≤ 6.8 and ΔSUVmax > 45.7. Of the four groups, Group D had the longest RFS compared to the other groups. Conclusion: Combination of SUVmax with ΔSUVmax was useful for evaluating the effects of NAC in patients with esophageal cancer.

Abstract

Site amplification factors (SAFs) of seismic ground motions are essential in evaluating and estimating seismic hazards. In our previous study, the authors proposed a simple and cost-effective method to estimate a SAF based on a deep neural network (DNN) model and microtremor horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (MHVR). Since the previous DNN model was based on the observed SAFs and MHVRs within a limited district in Japan, the applicability of the previous model to non-source regions with different site conditions was limited. This study explored the application of a transfer learning (TL) technique to adapt an existing (pre-trained) DNN model to new regions and a different database. The SAFs obtained through generalized spectral inversion technique (GIT) at the seismic observation stations (K-NET and KiK-net) in Japan were collated as the ground truth for site effects. MHVRs recorded at the stations in several districts of Japan were collected to construct a data set for the development of the TL model. Subsequently, a TL model was constructed, leveraging the neural network layers and their weights from the pre-trained model while incorporating additional neural network layers to enhance the performance. During the training process, a total data set of 112 sites was divided into training set, validation set, and external test set by 1:1:5. Utilizing a cross-validation strategy, the residuals between pSAFs (pseudo-SAFs) estimated by the TL model and the observed SAFs were analysed for the external test set containing 80 sites. The results showed that the TL model outperformed the pre-trained DNN model. The cross-validation results demonstrated that almost consistent prediction results were obtained regardless of any combination of 16 sites selected as the training set. Furthermore, by contrasting the influence of varying training set sizes on the performance of the TL model and comparing the TL model to a DNN model with an extended training set, the effectiveness of constructing the model with the limited number of data (16 sites) was ascertained. Finally, the effectiveness and limitations of the TL model were evaluated using MHVRs with peak frequencies falling outside the training set's range. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
