Antibodies raised against prostatic specific antigen (PSA) and immunoglobulin binding factor (IgBF) of human seminal plasma (SP) were used to localize the antigens in various tissues by Western blot. Both antigens were found only in the prostate, including benign prostatic hypertrophy and prostatic adenocarcinoma. The polyclonal anti-PSA antibodies stained five prostatic protein bands with estimated M(r) values of 10, 14, 22, 25, and 33 kD, whereas anti-IgBF antibodies stained a single 16-kD protein. No cross-reaction occurred between the two antibodies. When anti-PSA antibodies were used an additional protein with an estimated M(r) of 35 kD was detected in the extract of benign prostatic hypertrophy, but not with normal prostate or prostatic cancer. When SP and prostatic proteins were analyzed by SDS-PAGE under nonreducing condition and immunoblot with both antibodies, immunoreactive proteins with estimated M(r) of 125 and 140 kD, respectively, were stained, suggesting that both factors may be produced as an aggregated precursor molecule. Since IgBF was found only in the prostate, this component may be useful as a marker of prostatic tissue.

To determine the source of the immunoglobulin binding factor (IBF) in seminal plasma, extracts of testis and accessory male sex organs were prepared and analyzed by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and immunoblot. The detection reagents used were human and mouse serum Ig, monoclonal anti-Leu 11b antibodies, and polyclonal rabbit anti-IBF antibodies. Of the tissues examined, only the prostate, including benign hypertrophy and adenocarcinoma, contained IBF. These findings suggest that IBF is a secretory product of the prostate.

Human seminal plasma, testis, seminal vesicle, epididymis, and prostate contain a component with an estimated Mr of 20 kD that binds human immunoglobulin-Fc. The factor did not bind goat-IgG-Fc, immunoglobulins of human, rat, mouse, goat, horse, or rabbit sera and did not interact with antibodies raised against Fc gamma receptors. The present findings show that this Fc binding factor in seminal plasma is a secretory product of the testis and accessory sex organs. It binds human Ig-Fc but does not meet the criteria of an Fc receptor. Additional IgG-Fc binding proteins with estimated Mr of 90, 88, and 86 kD were detected in the prostate, testis, and seminal vesicle, respectively.

Intraoperative fiberoptic endoscopy has been recommended to identify the site of gastrointestinal hemorrhage in patients whose preoperative endoscopic and/or roentgenologic studies have been unrevealing but who require surgical intervention to control the bleeding. We report an undescribed complication of intraoperative endoscopy in such a patient.

Five cases are reported and reference is made to 3 previous similar cases of calcified intraluminal meconium in newborn males with "imperforate anus." A rectourinary fistula was found in most of the patients; none of the cases had meconium peritonitis. The calcifications may develop in areas of prolonged stasis; the possible added role of the mixture of urine and meconium in utero is raised.

The occurrence of pulmonary disease associated with long-term BCNU therapy is reported in two patients treated for astrocytoma grade II whose clinical presentations of pulmonary complications and corresponding tissue alterations showed striking differences. One patient presented with a dramatic, fulminating, and rapidly fatal pulmonary disease. His lungs revealed atypical proliferation of pneumocytes, moderate interstitial inflammation, fibrosis and intra-alveolar hyalin membranes. The second patient presented with slowly progressive dyspnea, ultimately leading to death secondary to severe diffuse alveolar septal fibrosis. Individual differences in response to toxicity are suggested and discussed.

A monoclonal antibody that induces agglutination of human sperm was used to localize the interacting antigen in various tissues by indirect immunofluorescence. The antibody localized to the immature sperm and Sertoli cells of the seminiferous tubules, simple cuboidal epithelial cells of the rete testis, and the columnar epithelial cells of the ductuli efferentes. The present results show that the interacting protein is found associated with germ cells undergoing spermatogenesis.

Vascular ectasias (angiodysplasias, arteriovenous malformations) of the cecum and ascending colon are a frequent cause of lower intestinal bleeding in the elderly that has been overlooked by clinicians and pathologists. Their nature and etiology have been poorly understood until recently. This article reviews the previous literature and presents a complete and detailed description of these lesions based on the examination of 87 areas showing vascular ectasia from 26 colons. Their morphology spans a spectrum from small focal early lesions to multiple large late lesions. The early lesions are characterized by markedly dilated, large, tortuous submucosal veins with minimal dilatation of their tributaries in the mucosa. The late lesions showed further dilatation of submucosal veins and venules and extensive replacement of the overlying mucosa by racemose collections of dilated and thin walled venules and capillaries, three of which demonstrated rupture into the colonic lumen. The pathology of these lesions is considered to be specific enough to establish vascular ectasias of the colon as a distinct entity.

The significance and frequency of fibrin thrombi (FT), the pathological hallmark of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), in ischemic intestine were analyzed in a retrospective study of the infarcted bowel of patients with occlusive mesenteric ischemia (OMI) and nonocclusive mesenteric ischemia (NOMI). Representative intestinal sections were studied from 10 patients with NOMI of the small and/or large bowel and 12 patients, with OMI of varied etiology. Three patients with inflammatory bowel disease and 1 patient with DIC and bowel necrosis were also studied. Routine hematoxylin and eosin stains for fibrin were prepared for each specimen. The number of FT was quantitated. FT were identified in each of the 10 cases of NOMI; however in only 2 were they prominent. FT were identified in 6 of the 12 cases of OMI and in 4 of these 6 they were a prominent feature. Rare FT were present in the cases of inflammatory bowel disease and did not correlate with the inflammatory process. No FT were present in the intestinal sections of the DIC case. FT are a nonspecific feature of necrosis and can be identified in both occlusive and nonocclusive ischemic bowel disease. Their presence in the intestine of NOMI therefore cannot be used to implicate DIC as the primary cause of this entity.

Paragangliomas of the thyroid gland are rare lesions, only four previous cases having been reported in the literature, to our knowledge. We report herein a fifth case, which, to our knowledge, is the first to exhibit malignant behavior manifested by invasion into perithyroidal soft tissue through the wall of the trachea into the tracheal mucosa.

The unusual occurrence of a fibrous histiocytoma of subcutaneous soft tissues, bones, and viscera is described in a newborn infant. The clinical and radiologic picture simulated a congenital fibromatosis, but histologic, electronmicroscopic and tissue culture studies indicated a malignant tumor with a bimodal cell population resembling immature fibroblasts and histiocytes. Although less mature and more uniform, it essentially parallels the findings in the adult malignant fibrous histiocytomas.
