Abstract

This study investigates the mechanisms acting at the air–sea interface during a heavy precipitation event that occurred between 12 and 14 October 2016 over the north-western Mediterranean area and led to large amounts of rainfall (up to 300 mm in 24 h) over the Hérault region (southern France). The study case was characterized by a very strong (>20 m s−1) easterly to south-easterly wind at low level that generated very rough seas (significant wave height of up to 6 m) along the French Riviera and the Gulf of Lion. In order to investigate the role of the waves on air–sea exchanges during such extreme events, a set of numerical experiments was designed using the Météo-France kilometre-scale AROME-France numerical weather prediction model – including the WASP (Wave-Age-dependant Stress Parametrization) sea surface turbulent flux parametrization – and the WaveWatch III wave model. Results from these sensitivity experiments in the forced or coupled modes showed that taking the waves generated by the model into account increases the surface roughness. Thus, the increase in the momentum flux induces a slowdown of the easterly low-level atmospheric flow and a displacement of the convergence line at sea. Despite strong winds and a young sea below the easterly flow, the turbulent heat fluxes upstream of the precipitating system are not significantly modified. The forecast of the heaviest precipitation is finally modified when the sea state is taken into account; notably, in terms of location, this modification is slightly larger in the forced mode than in the coupled mode, as the coupling interactively balances the wind sea, the stress and the wind.

Abstract

The case of the heavy precipitation event on 14 and 15 October 2018 which has led to severe flash flooding in the Aude watershed in south-western France is studied from a meteorological point of view using deterministic and probabilistic numerical weather prediction systems, as well as a unique combination of observations from both standard and personal weather stations. This case is typical of Mediterranean heavy precipitation events due to its classic synoptic situation and its quasi-stationary convective precipitation that regenerates continuously, but with some peculiarities such as the presence of a former hurricane and a pre-existing cold air mass close to the ground. It is shown that the positive Mediterranean sea surface temperature anomaly may have played an aggravating role in the amount of precipitation that poured into the Aude basin. On the other hand, soil moisture does not seem to have played a significant role. A study of rainfall forecasts shows that the event had limited predictability, in particular given the small size of the watersheds involved. It is shown that the stationarity of precipitation, whose estimation benefits from data from personal stations, is linked to the presence near the ground of a trough and a strong potential virtual temperature gradient, the stationarity of both of which is highlighted by a combination of observations from standard and personal stations. The forecast that comes closest to the rainfall observations contains the warmest, wettest and fastest low-level jet and also simulates near the ground a trough and a marked boundary between cold air in the west and warm air in the east, both of which are stationary.

Abstract

The Western Mediterranean Sea area is frequently affected in automn by heavy precipitation events (HPEs). These episodes, characterized by strong offshore low-level winds and heavy rain in a short period of time, can lead to severe flooding and wave-submersion events. This thesis work aims to progress towards integrated short-range forecast system via coupled modelling for a better representation of the processes at the air-sea interface. The methodology consists in studying the impact of a realistic representation of freshwater flow into the ocean, then examining the impact of better taking into account the sea state, particularly through coupling.In a first part, we evaluated the sensitivity to different river flow representations in the NEMO ocean model during the HyMeX campaign (SOP1, fall 2012). For this purpose, two ocean configurations were used, WMED (1/36°) covering the Western Mediterranean Sea and a new configuration : NWMED (1/72°) covering the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea. Three river discharge forcings are used : a monthly climatology as well as daily and hourly observations. The results showed a significant local impact on the ocean stratification when river discharge observations are used compared to climatology. The surface salinity is modified as well as the mixing layer, becoming thinner, delimited by a well marked halocline.Secondly, we focused on a HPE that occurred between October 12 and 14, 2016 in the south of France. In order to study the role of sea state in air-sea exchanges, a set of numerical simulations was carried out with the Météo-France AROME kilometric atmospheric model - including the turbulent sea surface fluxes parameterization WASP - forced or coupled with the WaveWatchIII wave model. The results showed that taking sea state into account has a significant impact on the lower levels of the atmosphere, reducing the surface wind speed and modifying the precipitation forecast over sea, particularly the location.In the third part of the thesis, we evaluated the contribution of ocean-atmosphere-wave coupling. In order to identify and quantify the coulping impacts, coupled ocean-atmosphere-wave simulations were performed using the coupled NEMO-AROME-WaveWatchIII system and notably compared to coupled atmosphere-wave and ocean-atmosphere simulations. The results showed, first of all, that the forecast is sensitive to coupling, and that the interactive coupling with the ocean leads to significant changes in the heat and moisture supply of HPE, while coupling with a wave model mainly leads to changes in the low-level dynamics. These results were finally compared with atmospheric sensitivity tests to the turbulent sea surface fluxes parameterization and to SST. It emerges that the choice of the parameterization can be of great importance for the HPE forecast as large as the coupling with an interactive ocean, whereas the dynamic effect is only produced by considering waves forcing/coupling.; La Méditerranée occidentale est particulièrement touchée en automne par des événements fortement précipitants. Ces épisodes caractérisés par des vents forts en mer et de fortes pluies en peu de temps peuvent entraîner d’importantes inondations ainsi que des phénomènes de vagues-submersions. Ces travaux de thèse ont pour but de progresser vers la prévision intégrée à courte échéance de ces événements via la modélisation couplée pour une meilleure représentation des processus à l’interface air-mer. La méthodologie mise au point ici consiste à étudier l’impact d’une représentation réaliste des débits pour l’océan superficiel, puis d’examiner l’impact d’une meilleure prise en compte de l’état de mer, notamment au travers du couplage.Dans une première partie, nous avons évalué la sensibilité à différentes représentations du débit dans le modèle d’océan NEMO durant la campagne HyMeX (SOP1, automne 2012). Pour cela, deux configurations océaniques ont été utilisées, WMED (1/36°) couvrant la méditerranée occidentale et une nouvelle configuration : NWMED (1/72°) couvrant la méditerranée nord-ouest. Trois forçages de débits sont utilisés : une climatologie mensuelle ainsi que des observations journalières et horaires de débits. Les résultats ont montré localement un impact significatif sur la stratification océanique lorsque les observations de débits sont utilisées comparé à la climatologie. La salinité de surface est modifié ainsi que la couche de mélange, plus fine, car délimitée par une halocline bien marquée. Dans la deuxième partie de la thèse, nous nous sommes intéressés à un épisode méditerranéen survenu entre le 12 et le 14 octobre 2016 dans le sud de la France. Afin d’étudier le rôle de l’état de mer dans les échanges air-mer un ensemble de simulations numériques a été fait avec le modèle atmosphérique kilométrique de Météo-France AROME - incluant la paramétrisation des flux turbulent WASP - forcé ou couplé avec le modèle de vagues WaveWatchIII. Les résultats ont montré que la prise en compte de l’état de mer avait un impact significatif sur les basses de couches de l’atmosphère en réduisant notamment la vitesse du vent de surface et en modifiant les prévisions des précipitations en mer, particulièrement leurs localisations.Dans la troisième partie de la thèse, nous avons évalué l’apport du couplage océan-atmosphère-vagues sur le cas d’étude d’octobre 2016. Afin de pouvoir identifier et quantifier les impacts du couplage, des simulations couplées océan-atmosphère-vagues ont été réalisées à l’aide du système couplé NEMO-AROME-WaveWatchIII et comparées aux simulations couplées atmosphère-vagues et océan-atmosphère. Les résultats montrent d’abord une sensibilité de la prévision aux couplages, et que le couplage interactif avec l’océan conduit à des modifications dans l’alimentation en chaleur et humidité des systèmes fortement précipitants, tandis que le couplage avec un modèle de vagues conduit principalement à modifier la dynamique en basses couches. Ces résultats ont finalement été mis en parallèle avec des tests de sensibilité à la paramétrisation des flux turbulents de surface. Il en ressort que le choix de la paramétrisation des flux turbulents peut avoir un impact de même ampleur voire plus important sur la prévision de l’épisode méditerranéen que le couplage avec un océan interactif, alors que l’effet dynamique n’est produit qu’en considérant le forçage/couplage des vagues.

Abstract

International audience; During Intensive Observation Period 15a (20 October 2012) of the first Special Observation Period of the Hydrological cycle in the Mediterranean Experiment, north-eastern Spain experienced heavy precipitation (130 mm in 24 h) associated with a retrograde regeneration mesoscale convective system (MCS) developing in the exit region of the Ebro River Valley (ERV). The life cycle of the MCS that brought intense hourly rainfall (34 mm) from the foothill of Iberian Plateau to the central Pyrenees, as well as the detailed structure of moist marine flow upstream, were analysed using a combination of ground-based, airborne and space-borne observations as well as model analyses. Over the Balearic Sea, the south-westerlies along the north-eastern flank of a surface low converged with south-easterlies from north Africa, creating a near surface moisture tongue in the region of the Balearic Islands, and a southeast-northwest oriented convergence line within a cloud cluster advecting from northern Africa. Airborne lidar measurements, acquired upstream of the ERV, evidenced water vapour mixing ratios in excess of 15 g kg−1 in the marine atmospheric boundary layer. In the mid-level (700 hPa), the presence of an elevated moisture plume from tropical Africa contributed for about one third to the large moisture content present over the western Mediterranean Sea. In this moist environment, the MCS was initiated over the orography of the north-eastern tip of the Iberian plateau, due to the combined influence of the approaching convergence line ahead of the surface low and the convergence resulting from weak north-westerlies channeled in the ERV and the easterlies impinging on the coastal range. After the initiation phase, the MCS further developed over the foothill of Iberian Plateau and moved into the ERV and along the southern flank of the Pyrenees, thanks to the penetration of the warm and moist maritime south-easterly flow through the narrow gap between the north-eastern part of the Iberian Plateau and the Catalan coastal range.

Abstract

International audience; During Intensive Observation Period 13 (15−16 October 2012) of the first Special Observing Period of the Hydrological cycle in the Mediterranean Experiment (HyMeX), Southern Italy (SI) was affected by two consecutive heavy precipitation events (HPEs). Both HPEs were associated with multi-cell V-shaped retrograde regeneration mesoscale convective systems (MCSs). The life cycle of two MCSs in connection with their dynamic and thermodynamic environments were analysed using a combination of ground-based, airborne and spaceborne observations and numerical simulations. Rain gauges revealed that heavy precipitation occurred in two phases: the first one from 1300 to 1700 UTC (35 mm h–1) was caused by a V-shaped system initiating over the Tyrrhenian Sea in the early morning of 15 October. Convection was triggered by the low-level convergence between the south-westerlies ahead of an upper-level trough positioned over south-eastern France and very moist southerlies from the Strait of Sicily. The convection was favoured by high convective available potential energy (1500 J kg–1) resulting from warm and moist conditions at low levels associated with high sea surface temperatures in the Sicily Channel. In addition, humidity at mid-level was enriched by the presence of an elevated moisture plume from tropical Africa, favouring the efficiency of the convection to produce more precipitation. The second phase of heavy precipitation (2300 UTC on 15 October to 0200 UTC on 16 October, 34 mm h–1) was caused by a MCS initiating over Algeria around 1300 UTC, which subsequently traveled over the Strait of Sicily toward Sicily and SI. Convection was maintained by the combination of large low-level moisture contents and a marked convergence ahead of the cold front. Unlike other MCSs forming in the same region earlier on that day, this huge V-shaped system did affect SI because the strong upper-level flow progressively veered from southwesterly to south-southwesterly.

Abstract

International audience; This study investigates severe convection in the Mediterranean during the first Special Observation Period (SOP-1; 5 September to 6 November 2012) of the Hydrological Cycle in the Mediterranean Experiment (HyMeX) with the objectives of providing novel information about severe convection on its vertical structure, spatio-temporal variability as well as evaluating the ability of a convection-permitting model to reproduce this variability. Two criteria, namely deep convection (DC) and convective overshooting (COV), are computed using the water vapour channels of the Microwave Humidity Sounder (MHS). Special attention is paid to the COV as it is associated with particularly severe weather. For the first time, the COV criterion was assessed in the Mediterranean, using two case-studies conjointly observed by the airborne RASTA radar and MHS. COV is characterised by high ice water content (up to 2 g m−3) in the mid and upper troposphere (up to 12.5 km in the stratosphere). During the SOP-1, DC and COV occurred about 0.1 and 0.03% of the total observation time, respectively. The Atlantic weather regimes appear to affect the temporal distribution of these convective events. Most of the DC and COV occurrences were found along the western coasts of Italy and Greece, mainly during the 10–15 October and 25 October–3 November episodes. These two episodes, for which severe meteorological events (e.g. tornadoes) were reported, are significant when compared with the 2002–2013 climatology (above the 75th percentile). Both criteria are also employed to assess the current ability of the Meso-NH model to forecast severe convection using a model-to-satellite approach. The forecast DC and COV are found to be highly correlated in time with the observations, but are strongly underestimated. This suggests that the model missed a significant part of the most intense convective events and their associated hazards, and underlines the need for better characterisation of model uncertainties associated with severe convection.

Abstract

International audience; Two deep cyclones occurred in the Mediterranean between 25–31 October 2012, during the first Special Observation Period (SOP1) of the Hydrological cycle in Mediterranean Experiment (HyMeX). Both cyclones were associated with extreme rainfall covering a large part of the western Mediterranean Sea, where 24-h accumulated precipitation measurements exceeded 150 mm. We combine complementary observations from airborne radar and lidar systems, ZEUS lightning detection network and meteorological surface stations along with satellite diagnostics on deep convection, for a detailed microphysics and (thermo-)dynamical analysis of the two extreme rainfall cases. In addition, we use operational analysis data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) for analyzing the synoptic conditions and diagnosing strongly ascending air masses in the vicinity of the cyclones, so-called warm conveyor belts (WCBs). The analysis revealed the different physical characteristics of the two cyclones responsible for the extreme rainfalls. Both cyclones were associated with a WCB and a comma cloud, but deep convection, intense lightning and very cold cloud tops occurred only for the first case while the second cyclone was mostly associated with stratiform rainfall, a strong WCB, and only few embedded cells of deep convection.

International audience; The Hydrological cycle in the Mediterranean eXperiment (HyMeX) was held in fall 2012 during which part of the observational effort has been established on Menorca Island to characterize the upwind marine low-level flow. The ground-based Water vapour Raman Lidar (WALI), the airborne water vapour lidar LEANDRE 2 and boundary layer pressurized balloons were implemented during the first Special Observing Period and contributed to characterize water vapour variability in the vicinity of the Balearic Islands, together with the existing network of Global Positioning System receivers. Furthermore, analyses from regional and global numerical weather prediction (NWP) models (AROME-WMED, the ECMWF/IFS NWP system and the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model) were also available over large domains encompassing part or the entire Western Mediterranean basin. We assess the consistency of water vapour mixing ratio (WVMR) profiles and integrated water vapour contents (IWVC) derived from the different data sets by comparing them to a common reference, the ground-based lidar WALI. We use consistency indicators such as root mean square errors, biases and correlations. Comparison between WVMR profiles from ground-based and airborne lidars (ground-based lidar and boundary layer pressurized balloons) leads to a root mean square error lower than 1.6 g kg−1 (1.3 g kg−1) when the closest possible air masses are sampled. We observed a good agreement between the vertical WVMR profiles derived from WALI and the numerical models with correlations higher than 0.7 and root mean square errors lower than 2 g kg−1. Regarding IWVCs, the models exhibit biases less than 2 kg m−2, root mean square errors lower than 2.3 g kg−1 and correlations higher than 0.86 when compared to WALI. Finally, AROME-WMED 48-h forecasts were compared with WALI data composited over eleven 48-h periods. The quality of the forecast does not visibly degrade within the 48-h period from the initial analyses.

Abstract

International audience; During the Intensive Observation Period 15b of the first Special Observing Periods of the Hydrological Cycle in the Mediterranean Experiment (HyMeX), a variety of mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) impacted the Cevennes-Vivarais (CV) target area leading to over 100 mm of 24h accumulated rainfall on 20 and 21 October 2012. The CV area was first impacted by a V-shape MCS developing over the Cevennes mountains, then by a MCS initiating on the eastern foothills of the Pyrenees and finally by three MCSs initiating over the sea. The MCSs initiated and propagated along a well-defined storm track ahead of an approaching upper-level trough, as observed with the 15 min resolution Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager. The storm track was characterized by strong southeasterly winds over the Mediterranean and high integrated water vapour content (IWVC), as derived from observations from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS). The ground-based Water vapour Raman Lidar, located in the Balearic Islands, captured the increasing moistening of the free troposphere, up to 5 km, associated with the eastward propagation of the surface low from Gibraltar to a location west of the Balearic Islands. MODIS and AIRS observations, together with Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model simulations, revealed the tropical origin of the high moisture content characterizing the storm track, with IWVC values on the order of ~35 kg m−2, and enhanced moisture being observed below 500 hPa. The WRF simulations also showed that the MCS initiation offshore was very likely caused by low-level wind convergence and conditionally unstable air along the storm track, between North Africa and southern France. Low-level convergence resulted from the interaction between a strong south-westerly swirling flow around the low pressure centre and an easterly low-level jet present along the southern France coastline.
