The recently completed Avenue of Saints (AOS) highway project in the Mississippi Valley of northeastern Missouri resulted in the documentation of Woodland period sites ranging from approximately 200 cal BC to AD 1200. This article updates the existing Woodland chronology for this locality based on new information collected during the project. Data pertaining to Early, Middle, and Late Woodland sites are presented. The approximately 1,400-year occupation span provided researchers an opportunity to view diachronic trends in tool manufacture, subsistence economy, and landscape use. Based on regional comparisons of ceramic and lithic technologies and vessel decoration, the Woodland sequence in northeastern Missouri was influenced by population movements originating from east of the Mississippi River and from southern sources in the Salt River valley. Investigations associated with the recently completed Avenue of the Saints highway project resulted in the documentation of two Late Woodland Ralls phase (cal A.D. 700–900) bluff-base settlements located in the Mississippi floodplain of northeastern Missouri. This article summarizes the result of excavations at both sites. Pottery consisted mostly of crushed rock and sand-tempered jars with cord-roughened exterior surfaces. Decoration on the orifice of vessels was very common. Burlington/Keokuk chert was the primary raw material used in the production of flaked tools and is assumed to be from local sources. Hafted bifaces were rare but when present mostly belonged to the Lowe and Scallorn clusters. The Ralls inhabitants were farmers cultivating a number of different starchy seed crops but not maize. Nut resources and fish were also important contributors to their diet. Based on artifact and feature data, both Avenue of the Saints sites represent short duration occupations by relatively small groups of people. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This essay examines the reaction of the Jewish press in Missouri to the recruitment, growth, and political activities of the Ku Klux Klan in the state during the 1920s. As a representative of Missouri Jewry, newspapers like the Kansas City Jewish Chronicle, The Jewish Voice, and The Modern View advocated for Jewish interests in their local communities while also serving as critical combatants against intolerance and antisemitism. To challenge the invisible empire in the state, these three newspapers attacked the hypocrisy of "hooded" activities in comparison to official Klan tenets, demanded that Klan officials rein in "loose-tongued" and bigoted orators, and criticized Protestant ministers who colluded with Klansmen through donations and church events. While initially successful in these tactics, by the middle of the decade the Missouri Jewish press made a decided turn away from more overt anti-Klan activism in favor of an outward push from Jewish leaders to have white Protestants lead the fight against the Klan. Despite this later move, however, as this essay demonstrates, these newspapers had a major influence on the state's Jewish population, both in local affairs and in aiding the fight to defeat the Ku Klux Klan. Between 1896 and 1910, miners from the zinc and lead district around Joplin, Missouri, worked as strikebreakers in almost every strike waged by the Western Federation of Miners (WFM). In most cases they helped defeat the union. Rather than dismiss these strikebreakers as the pawns of mine owners, Jarod Roll argues that their actions reflected careful appraisal by workers who understood the benefits and risks of crossing picket lines. Over time, repeated conflict between nonunion and union miners shaped the ideas of both groups. The effectiveness of the strikebreakers spurred the WFM to intensify its commitment to industrial unionism. Missouri miners, in turn, developed a belligerent anti-unionism that undermined every WFM effort to organize the Joplin district. By using the methods of working-class history to study workers who opposed unions, Roll concludes, labor historians gain a greater understanding of all workers, union and nonunion alike.
