Although evolutionary economics has extensively analyzed the evolution of industries in relation to innovation and technology lifecycles, the interplay between industry lifecycles and evolutionary patterns of knowledge networks has not been fully explored yet. This work aims to bridge this gap by analyzing the co-evolutionary patterns of knowledge and trade flows in the mining industry, using social network tools in combination with the Schumpeterian tradition of analysis. The study focuses on three Latin American countries: Brazil, Chile, and Peru, where the mining sector plays a significant role in the economy, particularly in the context of energy and digital transitions. Our findings suggest that the innovation network and the global value chain-trade network display divergent co-evolutionary patterns; while the former tends to be stable and concentrated, the latter shows increasing fragmentation and turbulence. This paper aims at contributing to better comprehend the opportunities for innovation in the mining sector that are leveraged by local knowledge-intensive mining suppliers (KIMS) in developing mineral-rich countries. Drawing on the innovation and global value chain (GVC) bodies of literature as well as previous empirical studies on KIMS in developing mining countries, we analytically distinguish among three types of innovation approaches that local KIMS can pursue. Each of them is associated with main sources of innovation opportunities, type of inputs supplied, and prevailing market structures and entry barriers. The distinction among innovation strategies together with an analysis that combines firm- and market-level dimensions helped us to better comprehend the types of innovation opportunities that local KIMS in Argentina are adopting and the nature of challenges they encounter. The empirical analysis is based on the novel fieldwork data collected in 2019 and 2022. The findings of the paper hold significance to inform productive and innovation policies regarding the type of interventions that may be more effective for Argentina in the current technological and market circumstances that the mining industry is facing. This case study contributes to the research on the environmental beliefs of extractive industry workers in an illiberal populist regime. This research is based on semi-structured interviews with logging sector workers of the Russian Northwest—a severely understudied population directly involved in resource extraction. The data shows that these workers understand forestland as two separate localities: the northwestern region of Russia, in which the loggers have expertise and knowledge, and the rest of the country, in which workers don't have any work or travel experience. This division facilitates a process of hybridization of populist environmental narratives on one hand, and loggers' science-supported knowledge and experiences on the other. This hybridization of the workers' beliefs is anchored in, and perpetuated by, Russia's state-controlled media and its modern authoritarian populist regime. Child labour is a complex social problem worldwide, affecting the physical, moral and educational development of children. A cross sectional quantitative survey research design was used to assess child labour in quarrying activities of the Ga West Municipality, Ghana. The municipality was selected due to evidence in literature of children engaging in quarrying activities. The study examined child labour occurrence and intensity, the working condition of child labourers in the stone quarries; factors influencing child labour in quarrying activities; and the impact of quarrying activities on children. Data which were analysed using probit model and descriptive statistics indicated a negative effect of stone quarry activity on the development, growth and education of the child. Significant influencers were poverty, attitude and poor perception of parents, broken homes, traditional belief systems and migration. The study recommends offering educational support, grants and essential resources to vulnerable households in order to ensure that children remain in school. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Filling methods in the mining industry can maximize the recovery of mineral resources and protect the underground and surface environments. In recent years, such methods have been widely used in metal mines where pipeline transportation typically plays a decisive role in the safety and stability of the entire filling system. Because the filling slurry contains a large percentage of solid coarse particles, the involved pipeline is typically eroded and often damaged during such a process. A possible solution is the so-called nesting repair technology. In the present study, nesting a 127 mm outer diameter pipeline in 151 mm inner diameter borehole is considered to meet the repair objective. First, by using the rheological theory, the pipeline transmission resistance and self-flow conveying range are calculated under different working conditions. It is shown that the pipeline transmission resistance is larger when the inner diameter of casing is 80 mm, and the limit flow rate of vertical pipeline self-flow is 120 m3/h; moreover, when the pipeline diameter is 100 mm and the flow rate is 140 m3/h, the self-flow conveying can be satisfied in most of the underground −455 m stage. Accordingly, a plan is presented for the nesting repair strategy, based on the installation of a drill bit under the casing and lowering the casing into the borehole as if it were a drill pipe. Finally, the outcomes of such a strategy are verified. The filling flow rate range using the new pipelines is found to be in the range from 188.60 to 224.39 m3/h, and its average filling flow rate reaches 209.83 m3/h when conveying 2319.6 m long-distance quarry. This study aims to map minerals of hydrothermal alteration zones in the Rehamna Massif, formerly site of large exploitation of Pb-Zn, Ba-Pb and W-Sn hosted within the Paleozoic basement, using the advantages of remote sensing technique. In this regard, ASTER remote sensing data have been used as a substrate for spectral processing, namely band ratios, to identify hydrothermal alteration zones characteristic of polymetallic mineralization. Band ratio technique leads us to map the Phyllic, Argillic, Prophylitic, Oxidation and kaolinite zones. Other ratios such as Muscovite, Allunite, Calcite and Fe-oxides were also computed. The areas reported were locally compared with the geological setting. The compilations of the results facilitate the identification of eight potential sites suitable for a possible tactical research phase. These results can encourage mining exploration and guide mining companies to the most potentially ore-bearing sites and support the economic development of the Rehamna area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ignorance holds untapped explanatory power for environmental history, in the Arctic and beyond. I define ignorance as a state of limited knowledge, held by groups, and produced through social processes. The case study is the opening of an oil frontier in the Canadian Beaufort Sea between 1968 and 1976. Drawing from a growing body of scholarship on ignorance, as well as newly available governmental and oil industry records, I review three concepts environmental historians can use to analyse the production of ignorance. These concepts are: proprietary knowledge, selective transmission and undone research. Taken together, these concepts make visible a set of political, economic and environmental conditions that allowed ignorance to shape the approval of the first offshore drilling programme in the Canadian Beaufort Sea. Ultimately, this case study demonstrates that ignorance - like its cousins doubt or uncertainty - has been a resource that extractive industries and governmental regulators have manipulated to navigate evolving requirements of environmental planning. The analysis of early studies and methods of land degradation assessment demonstrated that the existing assessment procedure does not reflect the real situation. The existing methods do not consider ecological aspects as loss of social-recreational and protective-restoration functions. The existing methods of assessing damage from the mining and processing enterprise require improvement with mandatory consideration of the environmental component. The object of the study is the land in mining and industrial regions, where minerals are extracted underground and industrial masses are formed on the surface. The main types of land use have been systematized, which makes it possible to apply an estimated aggregate approach. The loss of a number of functions of economic turnover is a classification sign of land degradation assessment. A three-criteria approach to the assessment of land degradation is proposed. This approach considers the impact of loss of social-recreational functions, loss of protective and restorative functions, and the impact of the main mining type of activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Over the past years, there has been a consistent trend in the global market to increase demand for iron ore. As a result, many mining companies have had to find new ways to intensify production processes, which has led to increased requirements for service providers. In view of the exceptional significance of the role played by dump trucks within the entire mineral extraction process, the component with the highest rate of failure, namely their suspension system, has been chosen as the subject of this research. In order to improve the reliability of these machines, a method has been proposed to assess the impact of various factors in the technological routes for moving rock masses, which are inherent in complex mining conditions, on the reduction in planned values for operating time until failure of suspensions using remote monitoring systems installed on these machines. Based on date for two–year period, mathematical dependences have been established between groups of route factors and the proposed indicator of reliability. Based on data for a two–year period from the quarries of Kachkanar mine deposit, mathematical dependencies were established between groups of route factors and the proposed reliability indicator.The obtained dependencies were used to validate the methodology for calculating the specified value of the maintenance interval for suspensions. During testing of this methodology, it became possible to reduce the amount of non-technological downtime incase of failure of suspension elements of dump trucks, which allowed to increase the maintainability of such machines. Objectives: Depressive symptoms, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are common morbidities among coal miners, but the risk of these morbidities has not been analyzed relative to other occupations taking into account relevant covariates. Methods: Using random digit dialing, we surveyed men aged 50 or over with a history of employment who resided in counties in Appalachia with high coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) mortality rates. We used the Primary Care Post-Traumatic Stress (PTSD) Screen and the Brief Trauma Questionnaire to query specific traumatic experiences. We used the Patient Health Questionnaire scale to assess depression symptoms and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder questionnaire to measure anxiety. Multivariable logistic regression analyzed associations between coal mining and depression, anxiety, and PTSD, adjusting for trauma, smoking and demographics. Results: Of 1,428 participants, 233 (16.3%) reported coal mining employment. Coal mining was associated with increased odds of depression (OR 1.6; 95% CI 1.1 to 2.4) and anxiety (OR 1.7; 95% CI 1.1 to 2.7). Among those with any trauma (n = 711), coal mining was not associated with increased risk of PTSD (OR 0.80; 95% CI 0.5 to 1.3]. Non-coal trauma was associated with three-fold increased odds of anxiety (OR 3.2; 95% CI 2.0 to 5.1); for coal trauma, anxiety was associated with six-fold increased odds (OR 6.0; 95% CI 2.9 to 12.4). Conclusions: Appalachian region coal miners carry an increased burden of depression and anxiety. Reappraisal of legacy reflection seismic data has shown to deliver value in mineral exploration, particularly in brownfield settings. In this work, we demonstrate how the reappraisal and processing of legacy reflection seismic data can be advantageous in the mineral exploration industry. We use today's standard seismic processing tools to improve the imaging of deep and complex geological structures that host mineral deposits. The recovered and processed 25.3 km long legacy seismic profile in this study was acquired in 1983 by the Gold Division of Anglo‐American as part of the Witwatersrand Gold Fields exploration program. This study aims to improve the imaging of the Ventersdorp Contact Reef gold‐bearing horizon (termed reef), a world‐class gold deposit (2 m thick) situated at depths between ∼2400 and ∼4100 m below the ground surface near South Deep Gold Mine in Fochville, South Africa. The final processing results from the pre‐stack time and phase‐shift migration approaches clearly reveal a dipping reflection associated with the gold‐bearing horizon and major steeply dipping faults that crosscut and displace the deposit. The final results are integrated with borehole information, 1D synthetic modelling and aeromagnetic data to constrain the structural interpretation. In particular, 1D synthetic simulation and borehole data constrain the depth position of the gold deposit. The magnetic data provides additional constraints on the complex faulted blocks of the host rocks such as the intrusions that may have a direct impact on ore resources and evaluation. The mining companies, such as South Deep Gold Mine, operating closer to the seismic profiles can use this new structural information to update the current geological models and improve future mine planning and designs, thus providing some insight into the prospectivity of unmined ground. Tok stori, a Melanesian pidgin term meaning "conversate or share stories", has emerged over the last decade as a Melanesian research methodology in the fields of education, pedagogy and leadership. This paper contributes to this scholarship by exploring the value of its application to the conceptualisation and practice of archaeological research in Solomon Islands. From our perspectives as Solomon Islander archaeologists, we reflect on our experiences engaging in tok stori with two communities from Santa Isabel and Lauru (Choiseul) while undertaking field work. We use these examples to demonstrate the highly dynamic nature of tok stori in research, serving as a mechanism to build trust and reciprocal relationships centred upon shared social values, but also to facilitate more transactional partnerships fixated on negotiating financial "benefits". Drawing from our experiences, we also discuss key challenges facing archaeological practice in Solomon Islands. These are a lack of awareness of the purpose and values of archaeological research, and a legacy of monetary enticement we refer to as a "handout mentality" generated by extractive industries. Tok stori, we contend, can aid in navigating these challenges and serves as a valuable research tool for archaeologists due to its adaptability and the cultural bearing it holds for Melanesian peoples. The evidence that a healthy and safe workforce provides a competitive business advantage is increasingly clear. However, how to obtain this may be unclear to many. This article presents a case study showcasing how one large employer worked toward improving its culture of health and well-being. Measuring progress using an established corporate health assessment tool, results improved 75% over a 5-year period. In addition, site scan culture checks showed annual improvement, exceeding best-in-class scores by the fifth year. Building a culture of health and well-being often requires a few years to implement fully and involves a commitment to plan, deploy, improve, and manage over time. Introduction Respirable crystalline silica (RCS) exposures in tanzanite gem mining have been linked to tuberculosis and silicosis among miners. We conducted a plot study to assess RCS exposures and to introduce safer mining practices in one small-scale underground tanzanite mine. Materials and methods Personal and area air samples for RCS were collected during tanzanite mining operations before and after improved work practices employed to reduce exposures and analyzed using X-ray diffraction. Area samples were collected at the rest area, located approximately 300 m underground and 100 m from other work activities. Improved practices included the use of wet drilling methods and drilling with new bits. Results A total of 33 personal and 4 area air samples were collected. Pre-intervention, mean exposures for all operations, drilling operations, non-drilling activities, and area samples were 122 mg/m3, 247 mg/m3, 34.3 mg/m3, and 1.95 mg/m3, respectively which exceeded the U.S. OSHA Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) by 2,440 times for all operations, by 4,946 times for drilling operations, by 686 times for non-drilling activities and 39 times for area samples collected at an underground rest area. The post-intervention results showed a 99% reduction of RCS exposures for wet drilling operations, 98.5% reduction for non-drilling activities, and 36% reduction for area samples. Despite improvements, post-intervention RCS exposures during drilling had a mean of 2.08 mg/m3 or more than 41 times the OSHA PEL. Conclusions We successfully piloted a program to work with small-scale tanzanite miners to reduce RCS exposures and raise awareness about the occupational health risks of RCS, though additional measures are recommended to further reduce RCS exposures. Objectives: The aim of this study was to develop the Remote Health Value Framework to evaluate the models of healthcare provision for workers in the oil and gas sector, predominantly situated in rural and remote areas. Methods: The framework was co-designed with the leadership team in one global oil and gas company using a multi-criteria decision analysis approach with a conjoint analysis component. This was used to elicit and understand preferences and trade-offs among different value domains that were important to the stakeholders with respect to the provision of healthcare for its workers. Preference elicitation and interviews were conducted with a mix of health, safety, and environment (HSE) team and non-HSE managers and leaders. Results: Out of five presented value domains, participants considered the attribute 'Improving health outcomes of employees' the most important aspect for the model of healthcare which accounted for 37.3% of the total utility score. Alternatively, the 'Program cost' attribute was least important to the participants, accounting for only 11.0% of the total utility score. The marginal willingness-to-pay analysis found that participants would be willing to pay A$9090 per utile for an improvement in a particular value attribute. Conclusions: This is the first value framework for healthcare delivery in the oil and gas industry, contextualised by its delivery within rural and remote locations. It provides a systematic and transparent method for creating value-based healthcare models. This approach facilitates the evaluation of healthcare investments, ensuring they align with value domains prioritised by the HSE and leadership teams. What is known about the topic? It has been challenging for oil and gas companies to deliver and evaluate value-based healthcare services to improve workers' wellbeing, supplementing essential emergency services and occupational health. Background: This is a study of service provider perceptions of the place, role and practices of CHWs in a four-year, large-scale private sector funded, public service ICT-enabled COPC intervention with rural and remote mining communities. Like all South African communities, apart from large mining house employees and some contractors, most people use available public healthcare services and private traditional as well as limited allopathic private sector providers. In addition to the limitations of facility centred primary healthcare and a fragmented health care system, the many negative health effects of mining on the communities, go unattended. Methods: This is a rapid, qualitative pragmatic study. Using site and participation convenience sampling, 37 semi-structured individual or group interviews were conducted with 57 stakeholders from 38 of the 135 intervention PHC facilities. Using a data driven, inductive approach, the results were analysed thematically in terms of perceived changes in the role and place of CHWs. Results: CHWs registered 42 490 households and captured the demographic and social profiles as well as the health status of over 154 910 individuals using AitaHealth™. These data provided healthcare professionals and managers with knowledge about community demographics, at-risk groups and vulnerable individuals. The intervention changed the locational focus of CHW practice and expanded their scope of work and competencies in household comprehensive health education, advice and care. It led to a growth in community and professional confidence in CHWs as trusted members of mining community PHC teams and to more focused and efficient clinic work. Conclusion: This ICT-enabled COPC intervention adopted a comprehensive approach to healthcare delivery that started by including CHWs in PHC teams and locating them in communities. Inclusive and systematic continuous learning, clinically-led CHW service support and ICT-enabled information technology engendered trust in CHWs as competent PHC members, and grew community confidence in them and the PHC system as a whole. Although health, care and other professionals and workers valued the changes the intervention brought to their work as well as people's lives in underserved and vulnerable mining communities, its sustainability is contingent on the vagaries of political will and financial commitment. This study aims to predict the migration time of toxic fumes induced by excavation blasting in underground mines. To reduce numerical simulation time and optimize ventilation design, several back propagation neural network (BPNN) models optimized by honey badger algorithm (HBA) with four chaos mapping (CM) functions (i.e., Chebyshev (Che) map, Circle (Cir) map, Logistic (Log) map, and Piecewise (Pie) map) are developed to predict the migration time. 125 simulations by the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method are used to train and test the developed models. The determination coefficient (R²), the variance accounted for (VAF), the Willmott's index (WI), the root mean square error (RMSE), the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), and the sum of squares error (SSE) are utilized to evaluate the model performance. The evaluation results indicate that the CirHBA-BPNN model has achieved the most satisfactory performance by reaching the highest values of R² (0.9945), WI (0.9986), VAF (99.4811%), and the lowest values of RMSE (15.7600), MAPE (0.0343) and SSE (6209.4), respectively. The wind velocity in roadway (Wv) is the most important feature for predicting the migration time of toxic fumes. Furthermore, the intrinsic response characteristic of the optimal model is implemented to enhance the model interpretability and provide reference for the relationship between features and migration time of toxic fumes in ventilation design. The mining sector plays a crucial role in Indonesia's economy by significantly contributing to national income and employment. However, mining operations can also result in adverse environmental and social impacts. This study aims to examine the legal responsibilities of mining companies in implementing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) as stipulated by statutory regulations. Utilizing qualitative research methods with a normative and empirical legal study approach, the data collection method employed is a literature review. Collected data are analyzed through three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The results show that PT Bengalon Limestone has a legal obligation to implement Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) through several concrete steps. First, the company must carry out the Community Development and Empowerment Program (PPm). In implementing this PPM, PT Bengalon Limestone refers to the Decree of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources No. 1824/2018 which includes eight main programs. Conclusion PT Bengalon Limestone has a legal obligation to implement Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) through several concrete steps. Purpose: Political Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), based on ideas about deliberative democracy, have been criticised for increasing corporate power and democratic deficits. Yet, deliberative ideals are flourishing in the corporate world in the form of dialogues with a broad set of stakeholders and engagement in wider societal issues. Extractive industry areas, with extensive corporate interventions in weak regulatory environments, are particularly vulnerable to asymmetrical power relations when businesses engage with society. This paper aims to illustrate in what way deliberative CSR practices in such contexts risk enhancing corporate power at the expense of community interests. Design/methodology/approach: This paper is based on a retrospective qualitative study of a Canadian oil company, operating in an Albanian oilfield between 2009 and 2016. Through a study of three different deliberative CSR practices – market-based land acquisition, a grievance redress mechanism and dialogue groups – it highlights how these practices in various ways enforced corporate interests and prevented further community mobilisation. Findings: By applying Laclau and Mouffe's theory of hegemony, the analysis highlights how deliberative CSR activities isolated and silenced community demands, moved some community members into the corporate alliance and prevented alternative visions of the area to be articulated. In particular, the close connection between deliberative practices and monetary compensation flows is underlined in this dynamic. Originality/value: The paper contributes to critical scholarship on political CSR by highlighting in what way deliberative practices, linked to monetary compensation schemes, enforce corporate hegemony by moving community members over to the corporate alliance. The mining industry is experiencing a transformative shift with the integration of automation, particularly through autonomous haul truck systems, and further advancements are anticipated with the application of swarm robotics. This study evaluates the performance of four swarm robot models, namely baseline, ant, firefly, and honeybee, in optimizing key mining operations such as ore detection, extraction, and transportation. Simulations replicating real-world mining environments were conducted to assess improvements in operational efficiency, scalability, reliability, selectivity, and energy consumption. The results demonstrate that these models can significantly enhance the precision and productivity of mining activities, especially in complex and dynamic settings. A case study of the Pilbara iron ore mine in Australia is presented to illustrate the practical applicability of these models in an actual mining context. The study also highlights specific enhancements in each model, including role specialization in the ant model, advanced communication in the firefly model, and improved localization combined with hybrid control in the honeybee model. While the honeybee model showed superior performance in high-precision tasks, its reliability was limited under high-error conditions, and it faced a computational resources bottleneck in large-scale operations, highlighting the need for further development. By evaluating these models against performance criteria, the study identifies the most suitable swarm models for various mining conditions, offering insights into achieving more sustainable, scalable, and efficient mining operations. This study aims to understand the impact of sustainability efforts on materiality or financial performance of insurers by accounting their risk coverage pattern in the Coal Mining Industry. 10 major insurance companies have been selected for this study and the focus has been to understand the stances and policies implemented by these companies between 2018 and 2023. Some of the firms like Hartford have officially declared that they have exited from this industry, while major players are still fueling the coal mining industry. Alternatively, companies themselves are looking to fund their risk mitigation plans so as to not rely on insurance firms. Studies by Hinshaw Law show that losses arising from climate change are rising at an alarming rate, the question then remaians, would insurance companies continue to fund activities that would put their existence in peril. Further research can be conducted on a larger time frame, new policies and frameworks implemented across this industry and to understand the risks of insuring activities that have increased the rate of climate change. Despite its numerous mineral resources, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) finds itself ranked among the poorest nations in the world, which fuels the paradox of ‘richer but poorer’. This work aims to highlight the relationship between the evolution of the mining sector and the economic growth of the country in order to respond to this paradox while formulating some recommendations for the sustainable development of the country. To do this, we acquired data from the annual reports of the mining cadastre and the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative which we used to evaluate the evolution of the mining sector. Fraud, corruption, and mining smuggling are at the root of the shortfalls experienced by the Congolese government, but also the lack of appropriate tools and technologies for the local processing of natural resources in order to give them added value. To achieve concrete results for the sustainable development of DR Congo, the ministry of mines will have to act through its technical services for the control of the mining sector in order to resolve all the problems. Background: When managed effectively, oil wealth can drive economic development and improve wellbeing. Conversely, as has been the experience in Ogoniland in the Niger Delta, the presence of the oil industry can lead to environmental degradation and social and economic vulnerabilities with negative impacts on health and wellbeing. Few studies have explored the experiences and perceptions of these impacts among residents of host communities themselves. Methods: This qualitative study explored Ogoni residents' experiences and perceptions of oil-industry related economic exclusion and associated impacts on health and wellbeing. In-depth interviews with 22 participants from four Local Government Areas (LGAs) were analyzed with open (inductive) coding. Guided by constructivist philosophy, interpretation of emerging themes was informed by the concept of social exclusion which recognizes that multi-dimensional processes can deprive individuals or groups of resources, rights, goods, and services, thus limiting broader societal participation. Results: Findings highlight the exclusionary impacts of the oil industry at the intersection of i) damaged livelihoods and family income, that increased economic vulnerability and reduced participants' ability to meet basic needs including ability to pay for healthcare; ii) lack of progress on environmental remediation and non-transparent benefit sharing schemes that exacerbate economic displacement and contribute to ongoing exposures to air and water pollution; and iii) insufficient of investment in economic development and essential health services, limiting employment opportunities and ability to access adequate healthcare. Conclusion: Addressing these issues requires integrated policy interventions focusing on equitable resource distribution, environmental restoration, and inclusive economic development to promote sustainable community resilience. A close reading of Carleton Watkins's photograph Nugget of Gold—attending to its subject matter, production, display at a world's fair, reproduction and circulation, and especially its minerality—reveals a profound identification in late nineteenth-century society in the United States between photography and mining. Representing a fusion of nature and culture, photography has been likened to currency almost from its inception. Yet the material and, specifically, the mineral limitations of this economy have been overlooked, though they establish a direct parallel with another gold-dependent commodity: money. Extractive activities in the countries of the Global South, particularly in various regions of Africa, serve as evidence of the pervasive and reinforcing nature of accumulative and commodifying practices, which are deeply rooted in and perpetuate the structural imbalances that have existed since the onset of colonization and the proliferation of colonial capitalism. The historical trajectory of resource and oil exploitation in Africa has been characterized by the occurrence of violent capitolocenes on the continent, eventually resulting in instances of environmental injustice, racial discrimination, socio‐economic deprivation and communal discord. In this context, the article analyses the persistent issues and consequences of environmental injustices in Africa, focusing specifically on the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. This region has been characterized by extensive oil extraction, environmental hazards and subsequent adverse effects. The article posits that the communities in the Niger Delta are subject to a threefold reality, which is characterized by a pattern of slow violence, slow observation and epistemic injustice. Furthermore, this article argues that the amelioration of ongoing environmental injustices on a rampant scale is contingent upon the adoption of a decolonial framework that seeks to advocate for the knowledge of indigenous populations, impoverished masses and marginalized communities in the Niger Delta. The study of quantitative and qualitative indicators of the non-metallic mineral deposits mining based on recognized methods of economic and technological assessment to determine the damages and the development of technical–technological measures for the providing the mining industry of construction and bulk materials from the crisis in the post-war period. To assess the state of non-ore mineral deposits, the authors of the article used the following research methods: critical analysis of literary sources, statistical processing of data on the mines functioning and the probability of their manifestation in specific mining and geological conditions. Based on the selected UNIDO method, which is used for the evaluation of high-budget projects, the quantitative performance indicators of the selected quarries of non-ore raw materials have been established. Systematization and visualization of the obtained results were carried out with the help of Excel calculation tables from the available software product MS Office. The main problems associated with the activity of mining enterprises that develop deposits of non-ore useful minerals are highlighted. Qualitative and quantitative values of the work of the selected mines have been prepared according to European standards, which serve as initial data for assessing the economic attractiveness and the possibility of their restructuring in the post-war period. A forecast of the development of the industry is provided on the example of individual technological units of entrepreneurial activity for the nearest period. Dependencies of changes in production capacity indicators of mining enterprises developing non-ore mineral deposits have been established. Data on the spatial distribution of reserves of construction and backfill materials (gravel, sand, clay) were studied. Using generally recognized international methods of assessing the efficiency of enterprises, changes in the priority of mine development were determined depending on the needs of the Ukrainian economy and the destruction of territories caused by military actions, that appeared due to the aggression of the RF. The effectiveness of the methodology was proposed and confirmed, which allows determining the operative parameters of mines, which are mining non-ore mineral deposits. It gives the possibility to assess the economic attractiveness of individual mines and subsequently predict the possibility of their restructuring for the introduction of the innovative equipment and technologies in accordance with generally recognized international standards. Objective: To describe the work experience and respiratory health of women coal miners in the United States using Coal Workers' Health Surveillance Program (CWHSP) data. Methods: Analysis included CWHSP participants with self-reported sex of female between January 1, 1970, and December 31, 2022, and examined radiographic surveillance, demographics, and job history. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health-certified physicians classified chest radiographs. Results: Among 8,182 women participants, most worked <10 years and a majority reported working in non-dusty jobs. Among 3,392 with ≥1 year of coal mining tenure, 18 (0.5%) had evidence of pneumoconiosis, with no cases of progressive massive fibrosis. Conclusion: Women coal miners participating in the CWSHP had short mining careers and low pneumoconiosis prevalence. Few worked in the most dusty jobs, indicating limited exposure to coal mine dust. This underscores the need to explore women's roles in mining, and for improved gender-specific employment reporting. Objectives. To evaluate associations between oil and gas development (OGD) and mental health using cross-sectional data from a preconception cohort study, Pregnancy Study Online. Methods. We analyzed baseline data from a prospective cohort of US and Canadian women aged 21 to 45 years who were attempting conception without fertility treatment (2013–2023). We developed residential proximity measures for active OGD during preconception, including distance from nearest site. At baseline, participants completed validated scales for perceived stress (10-item Perceived Stress Scale, PSS) and depressive symptoms (Major Depression Inventory, MDI) and reported psychotropic medication use. We used log-binomial regression and restricted cubic splines to estimate prevalence ratios (PRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results. Among 5725 participants across 37 states and provinces, residence at 2 km versus 20 to 50 km of active OGD was associated with moderate to high perceived stress (PSS ≥ 20 vs < 20: PR = 1.08; 95% CI = 0.98, 1.18), moderate to severe depressive symptoms (MDI ≥ 20 vs < 20: PR = 1.27; 95% CI = 1.11, 1.45), and psychotropic medication use (PR = 1.11; 95% CI = 0.97, 1.28). The sustainability of the mining sector over long term relies on a range of factors that must be carefully evaluated. To address this, Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) techniques have been utilized for their flexibility in offering supplementary tools. In this context, we assess the condition of the mining sector in Africa by examining key fundamental challenges it faces. Based on the literature review and opinions of experts, eleven challenges in the mining sector are identified. This study applies the FullEX approach to accommodate group decision-making process. Experts' Years of Experience (YE) and educational backgrounds are utilized to determine the importance of coefficients of criteria in the group decision-making process. The findings highlight mineral depletion resulting from over-exploitation, a scarcity of skilled labor, inconsistent power supply, inadequate infrastructure, and political problems as the most significant challenges confronting the mining sector. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis is conducted to evaluate the robustness of our approach. In order to solve the problem of gas overlimit in corner corners of coal and gas prominent mines, through the combination of air leakage mechanism in the goaf, near-field fissure expansion and rich area division, blocking material development and optimization, performance measurement of blocking materials and on-site test, we started to study the causes of gas concentration in corner corners, analysis of roof collapse and transparency in corners and performance test of blocking materials, and optimized the blocking materials by combining laboratory test and engineering test. Considering the thickness of the sealing film, the attenuation ratio of the sealing film thickness, the gelation time, and the gelation viscosity under different ratios, we designed a multi factor orthogonal experiment to optimize the optimal ratio suitable for the engineering site. Factors affecting blocking effectiveness, such as gel water retention and gel flame resistance, were also tested. The sealing scheme was implemented in the 2109 working face of a coal and gas outburst mine in Gansu, China. Through on-site monitoring of the changes in temperature, gas concentration, and air leakage at each monitoring point before and after the use of sealing materials, the analysis of the detection results shows that the temperature changes at each monitoring point after the use of sealing materials do not exceed 0.2°C; The change in oxygen concentration is less than 0.27 %; The gas concentration has decreased by more than 60 %, with a decrease of 71.32 % in the gas concentration in the upper corner. The air leakage has decreased by more than 53 %, and the proportion of decrease in air leakage at the upper corner is as high as 56.83 %. This air leakage control technology has remarkable blocking effect, meets the requirements of corner near-field fissure blocking material, and is easy to prepare, inexpensive, non-toxic, tasteless and green, providing a successful experience for the treatment of similar coal and gas outburst mines that can be referenced. Effective monitoring techniques and equipment are essential for the prevention and control of coal and rock dynamic disasters such as rockburst. Based on the fact that there is charge generation during deformation and rupture of coal rock body and the charge signals contain a large amount of information about the mechanical process of deformation and rupture of coal rock, the rockburst charge sensing monitoring technology has been formed. In order to improve the charge sensing technology for monitoring and early warning of rockburst disasters, this paper develops a new generation of portable coal rock charge monitoring instrument on the basis of the original instrument and carries out laboratory and underground field application. The primary advancement involves enhancing the external structure of the sensor and increasing the charge sensing area, which can more comprehensively capture the charge signals from the loaded rupture of the coal rock body. The overall structure of the data acquisition instrument has been improved, the monitoring channels have been increased, and the function of displaying the monitoring data curve has been added, so that the coal and rock body force status can be grasped in time. The results of the experimental study show that the abnormal charge signals can be monitored during the rupture process of rock samples under loading, and the monitored charge signals are in good agreement with the sudden change of stress in the rock samples and the formation of crack extension. There is a precursor charge signal before the stress mutation, and the larger the loading rate is, the earlier the precursor charge signal appears. The charge monitoring instrument can monitor the charge signal of the coal seam roadway under strong mining pressure. In the zone of elevated overburden pressure, the amount of induced charge is large, and anomalously high value charge signals can be monitored when a coal shot occurs. The change trend of the charge at different measuring points of strike and inclination has a good consistency with the distribution of overrunning support pressure and lateral support pressure, which can reflect the stress distribution and the degree of stress concentration of the coal body through the size and location of the charge, foster early warning and analysis of rockburst, and provide target guidance for the prevention and control of rockburst. Purpose: The extant literature underlines the inadequacies of legal and policy frameworks addressing the safety and health concerns of sandstone mineworkers in India. Notably, Rajasthan, a state renowned for its extractive industries, mirrors these concerns. Against this backdrop, this paper aims to critically evaluate the relevant legal and policy landscape, with an emphasis on the recent central statute: the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code of 2020 (OSHWCC). Given that the Code subsumes the key legislation pertaining to the safety and health of mineworkers, an in-depth critical analysis is essential to forge suitable policy interventions to address continued gross violations of human rights. Design/methodology/approach: The critical analysis of legal and policy frameworks on silicosis in sandstone mineworkers is based on a comprehensive reading of existing literature. The literature includes relevant laws, case law, reports of the Rajasthan State Human Rights Commission and National Human Rights Commission, publicly available data and key scholarly contributions in the field. Findings: Although the OSHWCC has made some changes to the existing regulatory architecture of mines in India, it has failed to safeguard the safety and health of mineworkers. Notably, the vast majority of mines in India – constituting approximately 90%, which are informal, seasonal and small-scale – remain beyond the jurisdiction of this Code. In Rajasthan, there are specific policies on silicosis, but these policies are poorly implemented. There is a serious shortage of doctors to diagnose silicosis cases, leading to under-diagnosis. The compensation for silicosis victims is insufficient; the distribution mechanism is complex and often delayed. Research limitations/implications: The central and many state governments have not established the regulatory institutions envisaged under the OSHWCC 2020; therefore, the working of the regulatory institutions could not be critically examined. Originality/value: The paper critically evaluates laws and policies pertaining to silicosis in sandstone mineworkers, with a special emphasis on the state of Rajasthan.
