Search

X-ray continuum emission of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) may be reflected by circumnuclear dusty tori, producing prominent fluorescence iron lines at X-ray frequencies. Here we discuss the broad-band emission of three radio-loud AGN belonging to the class of compact symmetric objects (CSOs), with detected narrow Fe\,K$\alpha$ lines. CSOs have newly-born radio jets, forming compact radio lobes with projected linear sizes of the order of a few to hundreds of parsecs. We model the radio--to--$\gamma$-ray spectra of compact lobes in {J1407+2827}, J1511+0518, and {J2022+6137}, which are among the nearest and the youngest CSOs known to date, and are characterized by an intrinsic X-ray absorbing column density of $N_{\rm H} > 10^{23}$\,cm$^{-2}$. In addition to the archival data, we analyze the newly acquired \chandra\ X-ray Observatory and Sub-Millimeter Array (SMA) observations, and also refine the $\gamma$-ray upper limits from the \fermi\ Large Area Telescope (LAT) monitoring. The new \chandra\ data exclude the presence of the extended X-ray emission components on scales larger than $1.5^{\prime \prime}$. The SMA data unveil a correlation of the spectral index of the electron distribution in the lobes and $N_{\rm H}$, which can explain the $\gamma$-ray quietness of heavily obscured CSOs. Based on our modeling, we argue that the inverse-Compton emission of compact radio lobes may account for the intrinsic X-ray continuum in all these sources. Furthermore, we propose that the observed iron lines may be produced by a reflection of the lobes' continuum from the surrounding cold dust., Comment: The Astrophysical Journal, in press

AT 2019avd is a nuclear transient detected from infrared to soft X-rays, though its nature is yet unclear. The source has shown two consecutive flaring episodes in the optical and the infrared bands and its second flare was covered by X-ray monitoring programs. During this flare, the UVOT/Swift photometries revealed two plateaus: one observed after the peak and the other one appeared ~240 days later. Meanwhile, our NICER and XRT/Swift campaigns show two declines in the X-ray emission, one during the first optical plateau and one 70-90 days after the optical/UV decline. The evidence suggests that the optical/UV could not have been primarily originated from X-ray reprocessing. Furthermore, we detected a timelag of ~16-34 days between the optical and UV emission, which indicates the optical likely comes from UV reprocessing by a gas at a distance of 0.01-0.03 pc. We also report the first VLA and VLBA detection of this source at different frequencies and different stages of the second flare. The information obtained in the radio band - namely a steep and a late-time inverted radio spectrum, a high brightness temperature and a radio-loud state at late times - together with the multiwavelength properties of AT 2019avd suggests the launching and evolution of outflows such as disc winds or jets. In conclusion, we propose that after the ignition of black hole activity in the first flare, a super-Eddington flaring accretion disc formed and settled to a sub-Eddington state by the end of the second flare, associated with a compact radio outflow., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, 1 table. Context. Many questions on the nature of astrophysical counterparts of high-energy neutrinos remain unanswered. There is increasing evidence of a connection between blazar jets and neutrino events, with the flare of the gamma-ray blazar TXS0506+056 in spatial and temporal proximity of IC170922A representing one of the most outstanding associations of high-energy neutrinos with astrophysical sources reported so far. Aims. With the purpose of characterising potential blazar counterparts to high-energy neutrinos, we analysed the parsec-scale regions of gamma-ray blazars in spatial coincidence with neutrinos detected by IceCube. Specifically, we intended to investigate peculiar radio properties of the candidate counterparts related to neutrino production, as radio flares coincident to the neutrino detection or features in jets morphology (limb brightening, transverse structures). Methods. We collected multi-frequency VLBI follow-up observations of candidate counterparts of four high-energy neutrino events detected by IceCube between January 2019 and November 2020. We analysed their radio characteristics soon after the neutrino arrival in comparison with archival VLBI observations and low-frequency radio observations. We discussed our results with respect to previous statistical works and studies on the case of TXS 0506+056. Results. We identified and analysed in detail five potential neutrino emitting blazars. Our results suggest an enhanced state of radio activity for one source, PKS1725+123. However, the lack of adequate monitoring prior to the neutrino events was a limitation in tracing radio activity and morphological changes in all the sources. Conclusions. We suggest that PKS1725+123 is a promising neutrino source candidate. We present a model for the broadband radio-to-$\gamma$-ray spectral energy distribution of the compact radio source, PKS 1718-649. Because of its young age (100 years) and proximity ($z=0.014$), PKS 1718-649 offers a unique opportunity to study nuclear conditions and the jet/host galaxy feedback process at the time of an initial radio jet expansion. PKS 1718-649 is one of a handful of young radio jets with $\gamma$-ray emission confirmed with the Fermi/LAT detector. We show that this $\gamma$-ray emission can be successfully explained by Inverse Compton scattering of the ultraviolet photons, presumably from an accretion flow, off non-thermal electrons in the expanding radio lobes. The origin of the X-ray emission in PKS 1718-649 is more elusive. While Inverse Compton scattering of the infrared photons emitted by a cold gas in the vicinity of the expanding radio lobes contributes significantly to the X-ray band, the data require that an additional X-ray emission mechanism is at work, e.g. a weak X-ray corona or a radiatively inefficient accretion flow, expected from a LINER type nucleus such as that of PKS 1718-649. We find that the jet in PKS 1718-649 has low power, $L_j \simeq 2.2 \times 10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$, and expands in an environment with density $n_0 \simeq 20$ cm$^{-3}$. The inferred mass accretion rate and gas mass reservoir within 50-100 pc are consistent with estimates from the literature obtained by tracing molecular gas in the innermost region of the host galaxy with SINFONI and ALMA., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, published in ApJ

We present deep X-ray and radio observations of the Fast Blue Optical Transient (FBOT) AT2020xnd/ZTF20acigmel at $z=0.2433$ from $13$d to $269$d after explosion. AT2020xnd belongs to the category of optically luminous FBOTs with similarities to the archetypal event AT2018cow. AT2020xnd shows luminous radio emission reaching $L_{\nu}\approx8\times10^{29}$ergs$^{-1}$Hz$^{-1}$ at 20GHz and $75$d post explosion, accompanied by luminous and rapidly fading soft X-ray emission peaking at $L_{X}\approx6\times10^{42}$ergs$^{-1}$. Interpreting the radio emission in the context of synchrotron radiation from the explosion's shock interaction with the environment we find that AT2020xnd launched a high-velocity outflow ($v\sim$0.1-0.2$c$) propagating into a dense circumstellar medium (effective $\dot M\approx10^{-3}M_{\rm{sol}}$yr$^{-1}$ for an assumed wind velocity of $v_w=1000$kms$^{-1}$). Similar to AT2018cow, the detected X-ray emission is in excess compared to the extrapolated synchrotron spectrum and constitutes a different emission component, possibly powered by accretion onto a newly formed black hole or neutron star. These properties make AT2020xnd a high-redshift analog to AT2018cow, and establish AT2020xnd as the fourth member of the class of optically-luminous FBOTs with luminous multi-wavelength counterparts., Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures, 6 tables. The study of the high-energy emission from young radio sources is crucial for providing information on the most energetic processes associated with these sources, the actual region responsible for this emission, as well as the structure of the newly born radio jets. Despite systematic searches for young radio sources at gamma-ray energies, only a handful of detections have been reported so far. Taking advantage of more than 11 years of Fermi-LAT data, we investigate the gamma-ray emission of 162 young radio sources (103 galaxies and 59 quasars), the largest sample of young radio sources used so far for a gamma-ray study. We analysed the Fermi-LAT data of each source separately to search for a significant detection. In addition, we performed the first stacking analysis of this class of sources in order to investigate the gamma-ray emission of the young radio sources that are undetected at high energies. AT2019wey is a transient discovered by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) survey in December of 2019. Follow-up optical, radio, and X-ray observations led to classification of this source as a Galactic black hole X-ray binary. We carried out one-epoch 6.7 GHz European VLBI (Very Long Baseline Interferometry) Network (EVN) and two-epoch multiple-frequency (1.6, 4.5, 6.7 GHz) Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations within a year after its discovery. These observations reveal a fading and flat-spectrum radio source with no discernible motion. These features suggest the detection of a compact jet. The source appears resolved at milliarcsecond scales, and the source angular size versus frequency trend is consistent with scatter broadening. This allows us to constrain the lower limit of the source distance to 6 kpc, if the scattering medium is in a Galactic spiral arm. For a source location larger than 3 kpc, the estimated upper limit of the peculiar velocity, relative to the local standard of rest, suggests the asymmetric natal kick may have occurred during the black hole formation stage., Comment: pages 9, 4 figures, A&A accepted for publication

Taking advantage of more than 11 years of \textit{Fermi}-LAT data, we investigate the gamma-ray emission of 162 young radio sources (103 galaxies and 59 quasars), the largest sample of young radio sources used so far for such a gamma-ray study. We separately analyze each source and perform the first stacking analysis of this class of sources to investigate the gamma-ray emission of the undetected sources. We detect significant gamma-ray emission from 11 young radio sources, four galaxies and seven quasars, including the discovery of significant gamma-ray emission from the compact radio galaxy PKS 1007+142 (z=0.213). The cumulative signal of below-threshold young radio sources is not significantly detected. However, it is about one order of magnitude below than those derived from the individual sources, providing stringent upper limits on the gamma-ray emission from young radio galaxies ($F_{\gamma}< 4.6 \times 10^{-11}$ ph cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$) and quasars ($F_{\gamma}< 10.1 \times 10^{-11}$ ph cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$), and enabling a comparison with the models proposed. With this analysis of more than a decade of \textit{Fermi}-LAT observations, we can conclude that while individual young radio sources can be bright gamma-ray emitters, the collective gamma-ray emission of this class of sources is not bright enough to be detected by \textit{Fermi}-LAT., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 20 pages, 20 figures

We present Chandra X-ray observations of 14 radio-loud quasars at redshifts $3 < z < 4$, selected from a well-defined sample. All quasars are detected in the 0.5-7.0 keV energy band, and resolved X-ray features are detected in five of the objects at distances of 1-12" from the quasar core. The X-ray features are spatially coincident with known radio features for four of the five quasars. This indicates that these systems contain X-ray jets. X-ray fluxes and luminosities are measured, and jet-to-core X-ray flux ratios are estimated. The flux ratios are consistent with those observed for nearby jet systems, suggesting that the observed X-ray emission mechanism is independent of redshift. For quasars with undetected jets, an upper limit on the average X-ray jet intensity is estimated using a stacked image analysis. Emission spectra of the quasar cores are extracted and modeled to obtain best-fit photon indices, and an Fe K emission line is detected from one quasar in our sample. We report the detection of extended X-ray emission from two high-redshift radio quasars. These quasars, J1405+0415 at $z$=3.208 and J1610+1811 at $z$=3.118, were observed in a Chandra snapshot survey selected from a complete sample of the radio-brightest quasars in the overlap area of the VLA-FIRST radio survey and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The extended X-ray emission is located along the line connecting the core to a radio knot or hotspot, favoring the interpretation of X-ray jets. The inferred rest frame jet X-ray luminosities from 2--30 keV would be of order 10$^{45}$ erg~s$^{-1}$ if emitted isotropically and without relativistic beaming. In the scenario of inverse Compton scattering of the cosmic microwave background (CMB), X-ray jets without a coincident radio counterpart may be common, and should be readily detectable to redshifts even beyond 3.2 due to the (1+$z$)$^4$ increase of the CMB energy density compensating for the (1+$z$)$^{-4}$ cosmological diminution of surface brightness. If these can be X-ray confirmed, they would be the second and third examples of quasar X-ray jets without detection of underlying continuous radio jets., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures. We present a comprehensive analysis of Chandra X-ray observations of 15 young radio quasars at redshifts $4.5 < z < 5.0$. All sources are detected in the $0.5-7.0$ keV energy band. Emission spectra are extracted, and the average photon index for the sample is measured to be $1.5\pm0.1$. Unabsorbed rest-frame $2-10$ keV luminosities are found to range between $(0.5-23.2) \times 10^{45}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The optical-X-ray power-law spectral index $\alpha_{ox}$ is calculated for each source using optical/UV data available in the literature. The $\alpha_{ox}$-UV relationship is compared with other quasar surveys, and an anticorrelation is observed that agrees with independent estimates. Rest-frame radio and X-ray luminosities are established for the sample, and a correlation between the luminosities is detected. These multiwavelength results reinforce a lack of spectral evolution for quasars over a broad redshift range. We additionally identify three quasars from our multiwavelength analysis that are statistically significant outliers, with one source being a Compton-thick candidate in the early universe, and discuss each in detail., Comment: Accepted to ApJ, 13 pages, 5 figures, 4 tables

The black hole MAXI J1820+070 was discovered during its 2018 outburst and was extensively monitored across the electromagnetic spectrum. Following the detection of relativistic radio jets, we obtained four Chandra X-ray observations taken between 2018 November and 2019 May, along with radio observations conducted with the VLA and MeerKAT arrays. We report the discovery of X-ray sources associated with the radio jets moving at relativistic velocities with a possible deceleration at late times. The broadband spectra of the jets are consistent with synchrotron radiation from particles accelerated up to very high energies (>10 TeV) by shocks produced by the jets interacting with the interstellar medium. The minimal internal energy estimated from the X-ray observations for the jets is $\sim 10^{41}$ erg, significantly larger than the energy calculated from the radio flare alone, suggesting most of the energy is possibly not radiated at small scales but released through late-time interactions., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL

Observations of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) at Very High Energy (VHE) offer a unique opportunity to investigate particle acceleration processes, magnetic fields and radiation fields in these events. Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations have been proven to be a powerful tool providing unique information on the source size of the GRBs at mas scales, as well as their accurate positions and possible expansion speeds. This paper reports on the follow-up observations of GRB 190114C, the first ever GRB detected with high significance at TeV photon energies by the MAGIC telescope, conducted with the East Asia VLBI Network (EAVN) at 22 GHz on three epochs, corresponding to 6, 15 and 32 days after the burst. The derived maps do not show any significant source above 5 sigma. The inferred upper limits on the GRB 190114C flux density at 22 GHz are used here to constrain the allowable two-dimensional parameter space for the afterglow emission. We find that our limits are consistent with most afterglow parameter combinations proposed so far in the literature. This is the first effort for the EAVN to search and monitor a radio transient in the Target of Opportunity mode. In addition to the useful constraints on GRB 190114C radio emission, experience gained from these observations is very helpful for future routine operation of EAVN transient program., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures. A new class of low-power compact radio sources with limited jet structures, named FR0, is emerging from recent radio-optical surveys. This abundant population of radio galaxies, five times more numerous than FRIs in the local Universe (z$<$0.05), represent a potentially interesting target at high and very-high energies (greater than 100 GeV), as demonstrated by a single case of Fermi detection. Furthermore, these radio galaxies have been recently claimed to contribute non-negligibly to the extra-galactic $\gamma$-ray background and to be possible cosmic neutrino emitters. Here, we review the radio through X-ray properties of FR0s to predict their high-energy emission (from MeV to TeV), in light of the near-future facilities operating in this band., Comment: Review, 18 pages. Compact Symmetric Objects (CSOs) have been observed with Chandra and XMM-Newton to gain insights into the initial stages of a radio source evolution and probe the black hole activity at the time of relativistic outflow formation. However, there have been no CSO observations to date at the hard X-ray energies (> 10 keV), impeding our ability to robustly constrain the properties of the intrinsic X-ray emission and of the medium surrounding the young expanding jets. We present the first hard X-ray observation of a CSO performed with NuSTAR. Our target, OQ+208, is detected up to 30 keV, and thus we establish CSOs as a new class of NuSTAR sources. We analyze the NuSTAR data jointly with our new Chandra and archival XMM-Newton data and find that a young, ~250 years old, radio jet spanning the length of ~10 pc coexists with cold obscuring matter, consistent with a dusty torus, with an equivalent hydrogen column density $N_H = 10^{23}$-$10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$. The primary X-ray emission is characterized by a photon index $\Gamma \sim 1.45$ and intrinsic 0.5-30 keV luminosity $L \sim 10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The results of our spectral modeling and broad-line optical classification of the source suggest a porous structure of the obscuring torus. Alternatively, the source may belong to the class of optically un-obscured/X-ray obscured AGN. The observed X-ray emission is too weak compared to that predicted by the expanding radio lobes model, leaving an accretion disk corona or jets as the possible origins of the X-ray emission from this young radio galaxy., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, ApJ, in press

Compact Symmetric Objects (CSOs) show radio features such as jets, lobes, hot spots that are contained within the central 1 kpc region of their host galaxy. Thus, they are thought to be among the progenitors of large-scale radio galaxies. A debate on whether the CSOs are compact primarily because they are young or because they are surrounded by a dense medium impacting their expansion is ongoing. Until now, attempts to discriminate between the environmental and genuine youthfulness scenarios have been inconclusive. We present a study of three CSOs selected on the basis of their puzzling X-ray absorbing properties in prior Beppo-SAX and/or Chandra X-ray Observatory data. Our new XMM-Newton observations unambiguously confirm the nature of their X-ray absorbers. Furthermore, for the first time, our X-ray data reveal the existence of a population of CSOs with intrinsic hydrogen column density $N_H > 10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$ that is different from the population of X-ray unabsorbed CSOs. The two groups appear to be separated in the linear size vs. radio power plane. This finding suggests that a dense medium in X-ray obscured CSOs may be able to confine the radio jets. Alternatively, X-ray obscured CSOs could be seen as radio brighter than their unobscured counterparts either because they reside in a dense environment or because they have larger jet powers. Our results help constrain the origin of the X-ray emission and the location and size of the X-ray obscurer in CSOs, and indicate that the environment may play a key role during the initial expansion of a radio source., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, ApJ in press

We present an in-depth study of the large-scale, western jet of the microquasar XTE J1550-564, based on X-ray and radio observations performed in 2002-2003. The jet is spatially resolved in both observing windows. The X-ray jet is expanding in time along the axis of the jet's propagation: we observe the formation of a tail (~2.25"), which appears to extend backwards with an apparent velocity ~-0.10c. The origin of this feature is discussed in the framework of scenarios of energy dissipation. A single power-law adequately describes the broadband spectra, supporting a synchrotron origin of the X-ray emission. However, a spectral break at ~10^{15} Hz is necessary in coincidence with a re-flare at 8.64 GHz in September 2002. This finding may be indicative of emission from newly accelerated low-energy particles. The first detection of the jet is in February 2001 (F_{8.64GHz}=0.25+/-0.09 mJy) in the flux rising phase. A phase of stable emission is followed by a rapid decay (t_{decay}=167+/-5 days). The decay at radio frequencies is significantly shorter than in X-rays (t_{decay}=338+/-14 days). We detected a high fraction (up to ~9%) of linearly polarized radiation at 4.8 GHz and 8.6 GHz. The orientation of the electric vector is consistent with the picture of a shock-compressed magnetic field, and there are hints of variations on month-timescales, possibly connected with the evolution of the jet structure., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report the $\gamma$-ray detection of a young radio galaxy, PKS 1718$-$649, belonging to the class of Compact Symmetric Objects (CSOs), with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on board the {\it Fermi} satellite. The third {\it Fermi} Gamma-ray LAT catalog (3FGL) includes an unassociated $\gamma$-ray source, 3FGL J1728.0$-$6446, located close to PKS 1718$-$649. Using the latest Pass 8 calibration, we confirm that the best fit $1 \sigma$ position of the $\gamma$-ray source is compatible with the radio location of PKS 1718$-$649. Cross-matching of the $\gamma$-ray source position with the positions of blazar sources from several catalogs yields negative results. Thus, we conclude that PKS 1718$-$649 is the most likely counterpart to the unassociated LAT source. We obtain a detection test statistics TS$\sim 36$ ($>$5$\sigma$) with a best fit photon spectral index $\Gamma=$2.9$\pm$0.3 and a 0.1-100 GeV photon flux density $F_{\rm 0.1-100GeV}=$(11.5$\pm$0.3)$\times{\rm 10^{-9}}$ ph cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. We argue that the linear size ($\sim$2 pc), the kinematic age ($\sim$100 years), and the source distance ($z=0.014$) make PKS 1718$-$649 an ideal candidate for $\gamma$-ray detection in the framework of the model proposing that the most compact and the youngest CSOs can efficiently produce GeV radiation via inverse-Compton scattering of the ambient photon fields by the radio lobe non-thermal electrons. Thus, our detection of the source in $\gamma$-rays establishes young radio galaxies as a distinct class of extragalactic high-energy emitters, and yields an unique insight on the physical conditions in compact radio lobes interacting with the interstellar medium of the host galaxy., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

We present the results of the first X-ray study of a sample of 16 young radio sources classified as Compact Symmetric Objects (CSOs). We observed six of them for the first time in X-rays using {\it Chandra}, re-observed four with the previous {\it XMM-Newton} or {\it Beppo-SAX} data, and included six other with the archival data. All the sources are nearby, $z<1$ with the age of their radio structures ($<3000$~years) derived from the hotspots advance velocity. Our results show heterogeneous nature of the CSOs indicating a complex environment associated with young radio sources. The sample covers a range in X-ray luminosity, $L_{2-10\,\rm keV} \sim 10^{41}$-$10^{45}$\,erg\,s$^{-1}$, and intrinsic absorbing column density of $N_H \simeq 10^{21}$--10$^{22}$\,cm$^{-2}$. In particular, we detected extended X-ray emission in 1718$-$649; a hard photon index of $\Gamma \simeq 1$ in 2021$+$614 and 1511$+$0518 consistent with either a Compton thick absorber or non-thermal emission from compact radio lobes, and in 0710$+$439 an ionized iron emission line at $E_{rest}=(6.62\pm0.04)$\,keV and EW $\sim 0.15-$1.4\,keV, and a decrease by an order of magnitude in the 2-10 keV flux since the 2008 {\it XMM-Newton} observation in 1607$+$26. We conclude that our pilot study of CSOs provides a variety of exceptional diagnostics and highlights the importance of deep X-ray observations of large samples of young sources. This is necessary in order to constrain theoretical models for the earliest stage of radio source evolution and study the interactions of young radio sources with the interstellar environment of their host galaxies., Comment: to be published in the Astrophysical Journal

We investigate the contribution of the beamed jet component to the high energy emission in young and compact extragalactic radio sources, focusing for the first time on the gamma-ray band. We derive predictions on the gamma-ray luminosities associated with the relativistic jet assuming a leptonic radiative model. The high energy emission is produced via Compton scattering by the relativistic electrons in a spherical region at the considered scales ($\lesssim$10 kpc). Simulations show a wide range of gamma-ray luminosities, with intensities up to $\sim10^{46}-10^{48}$ erg s$^{-1}$ depending on the assumed jet parameters. We find a highly linear relation between the simulated X-ray and gamma-ray luminosities that can be used to select candidates for a gamma-ray detection. We compare the simulated luminosity distributions in the radio, X-ray and gamma-ray regimes with observations for the largest sample of X-ray detected young radio quasars. Our analysis of $\sim$4-year Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) data does not give any statistically significant detection. However, the majority of the model-predicted gamma-ray fluxes for the sample are near or below the current Fermi-LAT flux threshold and compatible with the derived upper limits. Our study gives constraints on the minimum jet power ($L_{jet,kin}/L_{disk}>0.01$), on a potential jet contribution to the X-ray emission in the most compact sources ($\lesssim1$ kpc) and on the particles to magnetic field energy density ratio in broad agreement with equipartition assumption., Comment: 21 pages, 8 pages, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present radio, optical/NIR, and X-ray observations of the afterglow of the short-duration 130603B, and uncover a break in the radio and optical bands at 0.5 d after the burst, best explained as a jet break with an inferred jet opening angle of 4-8 deg. GRB 130603B is only the third short GRB with a radio afterglow detection to date, and the first time that a jet break is evident in the radio band. We model the temporal evolution of the spectral energy distribution to determine the burst explosion properties and find an isotropic-equivalent kinetic energy of (0.6-1.7) x 10^51 erg and a circumburst density of 5 x 10^-3-30 cm^-3. From the inferred opening angle of GRB 130603B, we calculate beaming-corrected energies of Egamma (0.5-2) x 10^49 erg and EK (0.1-1.6) x 10^49 erg. Along with previous measurements and lower limits we find a median short GRB opening angle of 10 deg. Using the all-sky observed rate of 10 Gpc^-3 yr^-1, this implies a true short GRB rate of 20 yr^-1 within 200 Mpc, the Advanced LIGO/VIRGO sensitivity range for neutron star binary mergers. Finally, we uncover evidence for significant excess emission in the X-ray afterglow of GRB 130603B at >1 d and conclude that the additional energy component could be due to fall-back accretion or spin-down energy from a magnetar formed following the merger., Comment: Submitted to ApJ; emulateapj style; 10 pages, 1 table, 3 figures

We report results from our deep Chandra X-ray observations of a nearby radio galaxy, 4C+29.30 (z=0.0647). The Chandra image resolves structures on sub-arcsec to arcsec scales, revealing complex X-ray morphology and detecting the main radio features: the nucleus, a jet, hotspots, and lobes. The nucleus is absorbed (N(H)=3.95 (+0.27/-0.33)x10^23 atoms/cm^2) with an unabsorbed luminosity of L(2-10 keV) ~ (5.08 +/-0.52) 10^43 erg/s characteristic of Type 2 AGN. Regions of soft (<2 keV) X-ray emission that trace the hot interstellar medium (ISM) are correlated with radio structures along the main radio axis indicating a strong relation between the two. The X-ray emission beyond the radio source correlates with the morphology of optical line-emitting regions. We measured the ISM temperature in several regions across the galaxy to be kT ~ 0.5 with slightly higher temperatures (of a few keV) in the center and in the vicinity of the radio hotspots. Assuming these regions were heated by weak shocks driven by the expanding radio source, we estimated the corresponding Mach number of 1.6 in the southern regions. The thermal pressure of the X-ray emitting gas in the outermost regions suggest the hot ISM is slightly under-pressured with respect to the cold optical-line emitting gas and radio-emitting plasma, which both seem to be in a rough pressure equilibrium. We conclude that 4C+29.30 displays a complex view of interactions between the jet-driven radio outflow and host galaxy environment, signaling feedback processes closely associated with the central active nucleus., Comment: ApJ in press

The spectra of BL Lac objects and Fanaroff-Riley I radio galaxies are commonly explained by the one-zone leptonic synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model. Spectral modeling of correlated multiwavelength data gives the comoving magnetic field strength, the bulk outflow Lorentz factor and the emission region size. Assuming the validity of the SSC model, the Hillas condition shows that only in rare cases can such sources accelerate protons to much above 10^19 eV, so > 10^20 eV ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) are likely to be heavy ions if powered by this type of radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN). Survival of nuclei is shown to be possible in TeV BL Lacs and misaligned counterparts with weak photohadronic emissions. Another signature of hadronic production is intergalactic UHECR-induced cascade emission, which is an alternative explanation of the TeV spectra of some extreme non-variable blazars such as 1ES 0229+200 or 1ES 1101-232. We study this kind of cascade signal, taking into account effects of the structured extragalactic magnetic fields in which the sources should be embedded. We demonstrate the importance of cosmic-ray deflections on the gamma-ray flux, and show that required absolute cosmic-ray luminosities are larger than the average UHECR luminosity inferred from UHECR observations and can even be comparable to the Eddington luminosity of supermassive black holes. Future TeV gamma-ray observations using the Cherenkov Telescope Array and the High Altitude Water Cherenkov detector array can test for UHECR acceleration by observing >25 TeV photons from relatively low-redshift sources such as 1ES 0229+200, and > TeV photons from more distant radio-loud AGN., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ, references and discussions added

Large scale X-ray jets that extend to >100 kpc distances from the host galaxy indicate the importance of jets interactions with the environment on many different physical scales. Morphology of X-ray clusters indicate that the radio-jet activity of a cD galaxy is intermittent. This intermittency might be a result of a feedback and/or interactions between galaxies within the cluster. Here we consider the radiation pressure instability operating on short timescales (<10^5 years) as the origin of the intermittent behaviour. We test whether this instability can be responsible for short ages (< 10^4 years) of Compact Symmetric Objects measured by hot spots propagation velocities in VLBI observations. We model the accretion disk evolution and constrain model parameters that may explain the observed compact radio structures and over-abundance of GPS sources.
