This study is the first attempt to assess the diversity of beetles (Coleoptera) in terrestrial moss cushions on three West Indian islands (Hispaniola, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico) based on 10 years of moss sampling in 18 localities. In total 1711 adult beetles were collected. They belong to 234 species from 30 families. The most species and specimen rich families are Staphylinidae (86 morphospecies and 1195 specimens), Curculionidae (61 morphospecies and 131 specimens), and Chrysomelidae (16 morphospecies and 185 specimens). In addition to basic bryobionts feeding on moss tissues, moss cushions host a diverse fauna of mycophagous and saprophagous Coleoptera together with predaceous species of beetles. Our results suggest that community composition in moss inhabiting beetles is determined both by geographical isolation processes and, to a lesser degree, by environmental variation across altitudinal gradients. This confirms that the greater relevance of geographical isolation is a common pattern in organisms with limited dispersal ability. Beetle abundance was not significantly related to either the volume of moss or the substrate. Despite being not significant (but close to), the observed trend was to higher beetle abundance in moss cushions collected on trees than in those collected on soil/rock. This may be resulting from the greater diversity of fungi and higher number of beetle fungivores associated with tree growing moss communities.

The Leptolycini are a group of Lycidae endemic to the West Indies. Leptolycini adult females have been hypothesized to be extreme paedomorphic (i.e., larviform), however, females and larvae of the group are currently unknown. Here we provide the first association of adult male and immature life stages from the Puerto Rico using DNA barcoding, also collections-based associations and descriptions of immature Leptolycini and the first description of a paedomorphic female from the Virgin Islands. To carry out these life-stage associations we prepared an in-depth review of the Leptolycini fauna of the Puerto Rican bank (Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands). Several new taxa and taxonomic arrangements are proposed: Cessator crypticusnew species, Cessator tortolensisnew species, Cessator obrienorumnew species; Dracolycus chupacabranew genus and species, Dracolycus marshallinew species; Leptolycus falsoheterocornisnew species, and Leptolycus viensisnew species. Nanolycus gnomus Kazantsev is moved to Cessator gnomus (Kazantsev) new combination, rendering Nanolycus Kazantsev a new junior synonym of Cessator Kazantsev. The subgenus Baholycus Bocak is a new junior synonym of Leptolycus Leng and Mutchler. Leptolycus heterocornis var. flavicollis Leng and Mutchler is elevated to Leptolycus flavicollis Leng and Mutchler new status; Leptolycus (Leptolycus) albicauda Kazantsev is a new junior synonym of Leptolycus flavicollis Leng and Mutchler. An updated key to the adults and immature forms of Leptolycini from the Puerto Rican bank and a discussion on the importance of scientific collections in biodiversity studies is also provided.

Binhon atrum Pic, 1922, an enigmatic genus and species described in the family Dascillidae based on a single female from Vietnam, is illustrated, diagnosed and formally synonymised with Plastocerus thoracicus Fleutiaux, 1918 (Elateridae: Plastocerinae). The species is recorded from China (Guangxi, Yunnan) for the first time. The taxonomic history of the genus Plastocerus Schaum, 1852 (not Plastocerus LeConte, 1853) with emphasis on its synonyms, is briefly summarised.

Since the description of the genus Cheguevaria as incertae sedis (Lampyridae), the placement of these beetles has been uncertain. This study is the first to address the placement of this genus based on a molecular phylogenetic analysis. We used three genes (18S rRNA, rrnl mitochondrial DNA and cox1 mitochondrial DNA) and a maximum likelihood approach with W-IQ-TREE to support Cheguevaria as a member of the Lampyridae and recognize it as the sole genus in the new subfamily Cheguevariinae stat. nov.

A molecular phylogeny of Ptilodactylidae shows that Podabrocephalus Pic, 1913, the type genus of Podabrocephalidae Pic, 1930 is closely related to Ptilodactyla Illiger, 1807 and other genera of Ptilodactylinae. Consequently, Podabrocephalidae Pic, 1930 syn. n. is proposed as a junior synonym of Ptilodactylidae Laporte, 1836. Earlier authors used the highly modified morphology of the male to justify a high rank for Podabrocephalus. The molecular phylogeny of Ptilodactylidae further indicates that Paralichas White, 1859 (Cladotominae) does not form a monophylum with remaining ptilodactylids. Ptilodactylinae and an undescribed lineage from Indonesia are sister to the broadly delimited Anchytarsinae. Within Ptilodactylinae, Pherocladus Fairmaire, 1881 is sister to a clade formed by Ptilodactyla spp. and Podabrocephalus. We remove Falsotherius Pic, 1913 from Ptilodactylinae to Ptilodactylidae incertae sedis, and return Daemon Laporte, 1836 from Ptilodactylinae to Anchytarsinae. Cross validation of morphology- and DNA-based phylogenies is needed for interpreting phylogenetic inference in morphologically modified lineages.

Platynus (Dyscolus) racquelae Liebherr and Ivie, new species is described from the Crater Rim, in the Parish of St. John Capisterre, St. Kitts, and Platynus (Dyscolus) duportei Liebherr and Ivie, new species is described from Nevis Peak, Nevis. These species are placed in the Platynus (Dyscolus) memnonius (Dejean) group, with their addition to the group extending the group's aggregate distribution northward from Basse-Terre, Guadeloupe to St. Kitts. Based on extensive collections of the Coleoptera of St. Kitts, P. racquelae appears to be restricted to only the wettest areas at highest elevations, suggesting that this species requires rather specific conditions present only in the most extreme montane sites. The beetles also exhibit moderate flight wing reduction involving diminution of wing veins associated with wing-folding—specifically, veins associated with the wedge and oblongum cells—and foreshortening of the alar surface due to loss of membrane along the wing's apical margin. This suggests that individuals of P. racquelae are at best weak fliers, and that this species is not able to colonize isolated patches of suitable habitat by flight. Platynus duportei is likewise known from only the highest and wettest point on Nevis Peak, but this species exhibits fully developed flight wings. Additional records of Platynus (Dyscolus) luciae Liebherr from St Lucia, and of Glyptolenus chalybaeus (Dejean) are reported, allowing elucidation of flight wing configuration and male and female genitalia for the former, and new island records of Nevis and Saba for the latter.

Wireworms have become a significant menace to cereals in the Northern Great Plains. Therefore, research toward developing effective control methods such as biological control with entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) is warranted. Two strains, each of two EPN species, Steinernema carpocapsae (Weiser) and Steinernema riobrave Cabanillas, Poinar, and Raulston in the form of infected Galleria mellonella (L.) cadavers were evaluated against wireworms in field and greenhouse. In field experiments, none of the four EPN strains were found effective against wireworms. However, in the greenhouse test, three of the strains, S. carpocapsae (All and Cxrd) or S. riobrave (355) applied in cadavers killed 50–68% of the sugarbeet wireworm, Limonius californicus (Mannerheim) was associated with 8–24% plant damage at 35 d after treatment (DAT), when seeds were treated with imidacloprid. The mortality range was 40–56% with 57–75% plant damage observed at 35 DAT, when seeds were planted without imidacloprid treatment. Synergistic effect among imidacloprid and S. carpocapsae (Cxrd) or S. riobrave (355) was observed in regard to L. californicus mortality. Additionally, effects of soil texture, moisture, and temperature on the infection rate of EPNs against L. californicus were examined in the laboratory. Limonius californicus mortality was not significantly affected by either soil moisture or soil types maintained at field capacity moisture levels. However, soil temperature showed a significant effect on L. californicus mortality. Overall, imidacloprid enhanced the infection and killing ability of EPNs against L. californicus and S. carpocapsae (All and Cxrd) strains were the virulent strains in different soil experiments.

A new genus and 14 new species of Anopidiina are described from the West Indies. Despite the many substantial advances and progress in understanding the internal evolutionary relations of several Lycidae groups, the divergence time estimation of the family within Elateroidea remains subject of debate, with estimates to as early as the mid-Jurassic. Herein we describe Prototrichalus gen. nov., and three new species: Prototrichalus sepronai sp. nov., Prototrichalus meiyingae sp. nov. and Prototrichalus milleri sp. nov., from Burmese amber of the Cenomanian Age (mid-Cretaceous), supporting an age for the tribe of at least 100 Ma. The new taxa belong to the tribe Metriorrhynchini and are the oldest recognizable beetles from this lineage, indeed, among the oldest known representatives of the Lycidae. The discovery and description of Prototrichalus and its three species provides direct evidence of the group's as a recognizable group in the mid-Cretaceous, much earlier than the recent predictions in the Late Cretaceous.

Cleicosta, a new genus of Phengodidae containing two new species, C.equatoreana sp.nov., and C.monaguense sp.nov., are described. Additionally, a new combination for Cenophengus breviplumatus Wittmer, 1976 is included. Cleicosta gen.nov., is the thirty-eighth genus assigned to the beetle family Phengodidae in the new world and is also the most morphologically similar to Cenophengus LeConte, 1881. Both genera exhibit clearly separated tentorial pits, vertical frons and simple tarsomeres. In Cleicosta gen.nov., however, the antennal rami are 1.5 times longer than the corresponding antennomere, the pronotum is subquadrate and the elytra are short, reaching the first or second abdominal segment. In addition, it presents an aedeagus with lateral lobes slender, parallel exteriorly, narrowed medially to toothless apex.

Cessator brodzinskyi Ferreira and Ivie, new species, is the third lycid species known from Dominican amber. The new species is described, diagnosed, illustrated, and compared with other fossil and extant species. Leptolycus parda Zaya, 1988 is moved to Cessator parda (Zayas), new combination.

Montana supports a diverse assemblage of bumble bees (Bombus Latreille) due to its size, landscape diversity, and location at the junction of known geographic ranges of North American species. We compiled the first inventory of Bombus species in Montana, using records from 25 natural history collections and labs engaged in bee research, collected over the past 125 years, as well as specimens collected specifically for this project during the summer of 2015. Over 12,000 records are included, with 28 species of Bombus now confirmed in the state. Based on information from nearby regions, four additional species are predicted to occur in Montana. Of the 28 species, Bombus bimaculatus Cresson and Bombus borealis Kirby are new state records. The presence of B. borealis was previously predicted, but the presence of B. bimaculatus in Montana represents a substantial extension of its previously reported range. Four additional “eastern” bumble bee species are recorded from the state, and three species pairs thought to replace one another from the eastern to western United States are now known to be sympatric in Montana. Additionally, our data are consistent with reported declines in populations of Bombus occidentalis Greene and Bombus suckleyi Greene, highlighting a need for targeted surveys of these two species in Montana.

A brief review of the classification history of the subfamily Colydiinae is provided, followed by a provisional diagnosis for the group. The 47 genera of New World Colydiinae (Colydiidae auctorum) are reviewed, with an illustrated key to genera, a representative habitus of each genus, a list of all 305 described species currently considered valid, each placed into the appropriate recognized genus, with full citations for each. The West Indian genus Diastolinus Mulsant and Rey, 1859 (type species: Blaps clathratus Fabricius) is revised. The group of Opatrina genera with divided eyes and expanded protarsi are informally known as the blapstinoids. The West Indian members of this group have been historically placed in the genera Blapstinus Dejean, Cenophorus Mulsant and Rey, Ctesicles Champion, Diastolinus Mulsant and Rey, Platylus Mulsant and Rey, and Sellio Mulsant and Rey. The sole fully-winged group is Blapstinus Dejean, which ranges far beyond the geographic limits of this paper. Only those Blapstinus that are recorded from the Biogeographic West Indies are treated here. All species of the remaining genera, including extralimital species placed in Diastolinus Mulsant and Rey, are reviewed and the genera redefined. The extensive and complicated nomenclatural history of this group is fully reviewed. All genera are redefined, diagnosed and the described species reassigned. These genera now include Cenophorus, Diastolinus, Goajiria Ivie and Hart, new genus (type species: Diastolinus curtus Mulsant and Rey, 1859), Nevisia Marcuzzi, new status, Platylus, and Xerolinus Ivie and Hart, new genus (type species: Diastolinus sallei Mulsant and Rey). Sellio and Ctesicles are synonymized with Diastolinus, new synonymies. With the exception of the species of Diastolinus sensu novo, which are revised in a companion paper, each species with a literature history is listed with a full synonymical table, a distributional synopsis, and historical notes on nomenclature. The tortured nomenclatural history of the Chilean species Endophloeus flexuosus Solier, 1849 and Endophloeus angustatus Solier, 1851 is reviewed. These species have had dual parallel and independent histories as members of the Zopheridae: Colydiinae and Tenebrionidae. The genus Phloeopsidius Gebien, 1925 was proposed for these two species in the Tenebrionidae. Phloeopsidius regularis Kulzer, 1966 and Phloeopsidius collaris Kulzer, 1966 were later added to the genus, also as Tenebrionidae. While concurrently treated as colydiines, the two Solier species have been treated in a variety of genera, most recently as Sparactus flexuosus and Endophloeus angustatus. Phloeopsidius is removed from the Tenebrionidae and placed as a new synonym of Pristoderus Hope, 1840 in the colydiine Zopheridae. Carinodula chiapanensis Bares and Ivie, new species, is described from the Sierra Madre de Chiapas, Mexico. It is diagnosed and illustrated, distinguished from its only congener, Carinodula campbelli Gordon, Pakaluk, and Ślipinski, by details of the prothorax, first ventrite, and genitalia. The definition of the genus is expanded to accommodate the new species. The first example of sexual dimorphism in the tribe Carinodulini is described — the presence of a patch of dense setae on ventrite I of the male.

The Neotropical genus Lycinella Gorham, 1884 is revised. Lycinellaopaca Gorham, 1884 and Lycinellaparvula Gorham, 1884 are redescribed and illustrated. Six new species are described for the genus: Lycinellaadamantissp. n., L.hansonisp. n., L.millerisp. n., L.cidaoisp. n., L.marshallisp. n. and L.pugliesaesp. n.. Lycinellahumeralis Pic, 1933 is moved to Ceratoprionhumerale (Pic, 1933), comb. n. A key to the species of Lycinella, illustrations and a distribution map is provided.

Aporrhipis flexilis Pascoe, 1887 is the sole species of a monospecific genus of beetles from Brazil, originally described in the family Ripiphoridae. Despite the fact that this genus was moved to Lycidae, its correct tribal placement remains uncertain. In this study, A. flexilis is redescribed, its tribal placement is discussed, and it is tentatively placed within the Calopterini, Acroleptina. The problems of distinguishing the Acroleptina from the Leptolycini are highlighted by this case, and a plea is made for additional specimens to help resolve this conundrum.

Two metallic green species of Pandeleteius Schonherr, 1834, Pandeleteius anneae Anderson and Ivie, new species (type locality: US Virgin Islands, St. Thomas) and Pandeleteius metallicus Anderson and Ivie, new species (type locality: Dominican Republic, Puerto Plata), are described. The two new species are easily distinguishable from other West Indian species in the genus by the metallic green scales, a deeper and more v-shaped epistomal ridge, and less strongly deflexed scrobes. The species are very similar and separable with confidence only on the basis of distribution, body size, and structure of female genitalia (male not known for P. anneae).

The purpose of this application, under Article 81.1 of the Code, is to conserve the genus-group names Liancalus Loew, 1857 and Scellus Loew, 1857 (Diptera, dolichopodidae), widely distributed and well-established genera of dolichopodid flies whose names have been used consistently for more than one-and-ahalf centuries. They are threatened by a change in the type species of Anoplomerus Rondani, 1856, made in a largely-overlooked unpaginated corrigendum on the last page of Rondani (1856). Liancalus Loew, 1857 is a replacement name for the homonym Anoplomerus and automatically takes its type species. It is proposed that Liancalus Loew, 1857 and Scellus Loew, 1857 be conserved by designating Dolichopus regius Fabricius, 1805 as type species for Anoplomerus Rondani, 1856 under the Commission's plenary power. This solution will protect both names and serve to promote nomenclatural stability.

The purpose of this application, under Articles 10.1, 13.3 and 81.1 of the Code, is to make available the genus-group name Nesocyrtosoma Marcuzzi, 1976 and subsequently designate Cyrtosoma inflatum Marcuzzi, 1976 as the type species. As this is the prevailing nomenclatural usage, this act will serve to promote stability in this West Indian genus of tenebrionid beetles.

Economically important species of wireworms (Coleoptera: Elateridae) were successfully associated with adults using cytochrome oxidase I (COI) barcoding, proving the usefulness of this technique to associate life stages in taxonomically difficult pest groups. Previously unrecognized and morphologically difficult, even indistinguishable, pest larvae were shown to be identifiable using this technique. This is a critical step toward discovering effective species-based integrated pest management strategies for this resurgent pest group following the loss of Lindane seed treatments. Three new adult-larval associations were discovered for Hadromorphus callidus (Brown), Hemicrepidius carbonatus (LeConte) and Metanomus insidiosus (LeConte). Hypnoidus bicolor (Eschscholtz) was shown to comprise multiple divergent lineages at a level usually considered different species, indicating that the population structure of some pest species requires more investigation. The status of the prairie grain wireworm, Selatosomus destructor (Brown), as a full species or as a subspecies of Selatosomus aeripennis (Kirby) is called into question.

Two newly described species of the West Indian genus Xerolinus Ivie and Hart provide new island records for the genus and extend the previously known range of the genus to the south and east. Xerolinus swearingenae Hart and Ivie, new species, is described from Jamaica, whereas Xerolinus camanoensis Hart and Ivie, new species, is described from the Virgin Islands (Great Camanoe).

Platyparadonus, new genus is described for two new species, Platyparadonus marleyi, new species from the Greater Antilles (Jamaica, Cuba, St. John), and Platyparadonus beckeri, new species from coastal Colombia. The genus morphology is described and illustrated in detail. The genus is compared to similar genera within the subfamily Negastriinae, and it is integrated into an existing generic key. A key to species of the new genus is provided. For each new species, detailed discussions about the collectors, their field notes, and habitat are provided.

Chalcophora angulicollis (LeConte) and Chalcophora virginiensis (Drury) are shown to be valid allopatric species in the western and eastern forests of North America, respectively. The historic uncertainty regarding their status is reviewed, and new characters of the aedeagus, penultimate maxillary palpomere, and elytral serrations are utilized for their identification. This information is combined with redescriptions, diagnoses, illustrations, and a key for all species of Chalcophora Dejean in North America north of Mexico.

The tiger beetle Brasiella argentata pallipes (Fleutiaux and Salle, 1889) is recorded from the West Indian islands of Barbados and St. Lucia, new country records. Observations on habitat and behavior are also detailed.

Cyanomethia pseudothonalmus Philips and Ivie was known only from the single male holotype. Recent collection of additional specimens from St. John, Virgin Islands, allowed the description of the previously unknown female. Information on the biology of this species is also given. The two unique specimens used to describe Methia taina Zayas and Tessaropa luctuosa Zayas from eastern Cuba were restudied, and the former is considered to be the female of the latter. Therefore, M. taina is considered a junior synonym of Tessaropa luctuosa Zayas, new synonymy. A damaged and enigmatic specimen illustrated in the literature was studied and placed in Tessaropa Haldeman as an undescribed species.A new key to genera of West Indian Methiini is provided.

TheWest Indian Cyrtosoma Perty are revised. Three species are described: Cyrtosoma dominicae Spiessberger and Ivie, new species from Dominica; Cyrtosoma luciae Spiessberger and Ivie, new species from Saint Lucia; and Cyrtosoma vincenti Spiessberger and Ivie, new species from Saint Vincent. A key to theWest Indian species of Cyrtosoma is provided. Authorship of Cyrtosoma lherminierii (Guerin-Meneville) is clarified. Platydema piceaLaporte and Brulle, 1831 is placed in Hesiodus Champion as Hesiodus piceus (Laporte and Brulle), new combination, a senior synonym of Hesiodus caraibus Fleutiaux and Salle, new synonymy.

The West Indian Chrysobothris thoracica species-group is defined to include Chrysobothris thoracica (F., 1798), Chrysobothris hispaniolae Fisher, 1925, Chrysobothris guadeloupensis Descarpentries, 1981, Chrysobothris sabae Maier and Ivie, new species (Saba), and Chrysobothris marskeae Maier and Ivie, new species (Montserrat). New records of C. thoracica from Anguilla and several of the Virgin Islands are reported. These rarely collected species are defined, keyed, and illustrated.
