Abstract

Although machine learning (ML) has shown promise in numerous domains, there are concerns about generalizability to out-of-sample data. This is currently addressed by centrally sharing ample, and importantly diverse, data from multiple sites. However, such centralization is challenging to scale (or even not feasible) due to various limitations. Federated ML (FL) provides an alternative to train accurate and generalizable ML models, by only sharing numerical model updates. Here we present findings from the largest FL study to-date, involving data from 71 healthcare institutions across 6 continents, to generate an automatic tumor boundary detector for the rare disease of glioblastoma, utilizing the largest dataset of such patients ever used in the literature (25,256 MRI scans from 6,314 patients). We demonstrate a 33% improvement over a publicly trained model to delineate the surgically targetable tumor, and 23% improvement over the tumor's entire extent. We anticipate our study to: 1) enable more studies in healthcare informed by large and diverse data, ensuring meaningful results for rare diseases and underrepresented populations, 2) facilitate further quantitative analyses for glioblastoma via performance optimization of our consensus model for eventual public release, and 3) demonstrate the effectiveness of FL at such scale and task complexity as a paradigm shift for multi-site collaborations, alleviating the need for data sharing., Comment: federated learning, deep learning, convolutional neural network, segmentation, brain tumor, glioma, glioblastoma, FeTS, BraTS

14. Which Forest Characteristics Shape Bird Abundance in Central European Forests? A Case Study Based on Common Breeding Bird Survey in Czechia.

Abstract

A large part of European forests is managed using modern forestry techniques, and it is interesting to explore the relationships between forest bird abundance and variables describing the forests from the perspective of forest managers. The aim of our study was to identify these relationships through nation-wide bird monitoring and forestry data in Czechia. After controlling for the effect of altitude, the forest characteristics that exhibited a significant effect on the abundance in the highest number of species are the proportion of conifers, growth phase and tree damage. In the next step, we performed a principal component analysis to reveal general patterns in those species-specific responses. The main gradient obtained was determined by altitude and discriminated species associated with lowland forests (e.g. Common Starling Sturnus vulgaris, Spotted Flycatcher Muscicapa striata) from those associated with highland forests (e.g. Red Crossbill Loxia curvirostra, Tree Pipit Anthus trivialis). This suggests an important role of altitudinal climate zones in shaping forest bird abundance. The second gradient showed a cluster of species with higher abundance in broad-leaved forests with higher stem density, more vegetation layers, and more damaged (e.g. Common Redstart Phoenicurus phoenicurus, European Pied Flycatcher Ficedula hypoleuca). At the opposite end were clustered species with higher abundance in more coniferous forests, lower stem density, fewer vegetation layers and less damaged (e.g. Eurasian Siskin Spinus spinus, Crested Tit Lophophanes cristatus). The second gradient can be explained by forestry practices applied in Czechia. Specifically, broad-leaved forests generally have a longer logging cycle compared to coniferous forests, resulting in generally older stands exhibiting more signs of damage and multiple vegetation layers, while coniferous forests predominantly maintain a single-vegetation layer structure. 20. Zu einem Fürstengrab aus der Späthallstattzeit mit zweirädrigem Wagen und Bronzegefäßen bei Rovná (okr. Strakonice) in Südböhmen

Abstract

In den Jahren 2012-2013 fand bei Rovná die Ausgrabung eines gestörten, bis dahin archäologisch noch nicht dokumentierten Großgrabhügels von 25 m Durchmesser der Späthallstattzeit statt. Die mit Holz ausgekleidete Grabkammer auf Bodenniveau hatte einen quadratischen Grundriss von 6,2 m × 6,1 m. Das Grab 1 von Rovná enthielt fünf Bronzegefäße; es handelt sich dabei um eine der reichsten Ausstattungen mit außergewöhnlichen Metallgefäßen in Böhmen. Sie zeigt enge Verbindungen zum Westhallstattkreis in Baden-Württemberg an, einige der Gefäße stammen sogar aus Italien. Die Perlrandbecken der Variante Hundersingen werden der zweiten Hälfte des 6. und der ersten Hälfte des 5. Jahrhunderts v. Chr. zugeordnet, was zur Zeitstellung der weiteren Beigaben aus Hügel 1 von Rovná passt, da die beiden darin aufgefundenen Fußzierfibeln nach Ha D3 datieren. Abstract

The article presents a summary and evaluation of all currently available finds from a small barrow cemetery known since 1869, when the first, unprofessional excavation was carried out there. During modern excavations, a total of 10 features were registered and investigated. Burials took place there in the Middle and Late Bronze Age and in the Hallstatt period. Additional secondary burials were later, during the Late Bronze Age and late Hallstatt period, deposited in some of the Middle Bronze Age barrows. In addition to burials in barrows, a small late Hallstatt period flat cemetery with a total of 5 graves was unearthed in an area to the north of the barrows. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Příspěvek informuje o nových ojedinělých nálezech kovových předmětů uskutečněných v jižních Čechách v letech 2017-2020. Kromě celkového přehledu, chronologického a typologického vyhodnocení, byla na jednom z kopí provedena i traseologická analýza. In the article, new isolated Bronze Age metal fi nds are published which have been documented in the territory of South Bohemia over the last about fi ve years and which have not been published anywhere else. These are 137 bronze or copper artefacts from 128 sites which are dateable to all chronological phases of the Bronze Age. Some of them are quite unique in South Bohemia, with analogies in other Central European regions. Several artefacts were subjected to spectral analysis in order to determine their chemical composition. A spearhead from Horažďovice was also subjected to traceological analysis. In addition to an enrichment of the typological spectrum of artefacts, these discoveries in some cases also proved human activities in regions regarded as uninhabited or only sporadically utilized. Thus the presented article clearly shows the importance and signifi cance of documentation and rescue of these unique fi nds. Their interpretive value is lower than that of those made in settlement, funerary or hoard contexts, but they are defi nitely not without importance for our knowledge of prehistoric settlement and human activities in the region.

31. Numerical and Experimental Study of a Cooling for Vanes in a Small Turbine Engine

Abstract

This paper is concerned with a cooling system for inlet guide vanes of a small turbine engine which are exposed to a high temperature gas leaving a combustion chamber. Because of small dimensions of the vanes, only a simple internal cavity and cooling holes can be realized. The idea was to utilize a film cooling technique. The proposed solution was simulated by means of a numerical method based on a coupling of CFD and heat transfer solvers. The numerical results of various scenarios (different coolant temperature, heat transfer to surroundings) showed a desired decrease of the temperature, especially on the most critical part – the trailing edge. The numerical data are compared to results obtained by experimental measurements performed in a test facility in our institute. A quarter segment model of the inlet guide vanes wheel was equipped with thermocouples in order to verify an effect of cooling. Despite some uncertainty in the results, a verifiable decrease of the vane temperature was observed.

Abstract

This work is mainly focused on the annotation of genomes of an important group of alveolate algae, which are the closest known phototrophic relatives of sporozoan parasites. The analysis is aimed to annotate their mitochondrial and nuclear genomes and search for biosynthetic pathways essential for sporozoans by combining the in-silico approach with supportive experiments. The initial study describes mitochondrial genomes of Chromera velia and Vitrella brassicaformis and models their unprecedently divergent respiratory chains. The following study summarizes the general characteristics of nuclear genomes of the two chromerids, highlights main genomic features shared with apicomplexan parasites, and traces the evolutionary transitions from the phototrophic ancestor to the obligate apicomplexan parasites. The study was completed by a comprehensive biochemical, genetic, and evolutionary analyses of fatty acid biosynthesis in chromerids.

Abstract

After a break in the La Tène and Roman period, there was a renaissance of burial mounds in southern Bohemia during the Early Middle Ages (8th to mid-10th century). In addition to the construction of completely new burial grounds, early medieval cremation burials were also sometimes added to earlier prehistoric mounds, mostly those dating from the Hallstatt period. The fi nd of a small iron axe made on the surface of a large Hallstatt mound near Hanov in 2015 is probably related to this custom and indicates an additional child’s burial which was destroyed or disturbed during the excavation of the mound in the 19th century.
