The impact of high-temperature annealing on the magnetic and microstructural properties of MnFePSi glass-coated microwires is studied. A comparative analysis is conducted to elucidate the influence of annealing conditions (temperature and time) on physical characteristics MnFePSi glass-coated microwires compared to the as-prepared sample. The results reveal a significant influence of the annealing process on MnFePSi-based glass-coated microwires. A notable observation is the increased coercivity (Hc) for the sample annealed at 973 K for 1 h, rising from 761 Oe (as-prepared) to 1200 Oe. However, increasing the annealing time to 2 h leads to a sharp reduction in the coercivity value to 253 Oe. Thermomagnetic curves [field-cooling (FC) and field-heating (FH)] of the annealed samples, measured at both low and high magnetic fields, exhibit perfect matching. This indicates that the relevant contribution of the internal stresses induced by glass coating in the magnetic behavior in both FC and FH protocols. We demonstrate the possibility for tailoring and modification of relevant magnetic phenomena such as metamagnetic phase transition, magnetic behavior, and the control of magnetic response (hardness/softness). In contrast to the parent compound YCo12B6, the Fe-doped YCo12−xFexB6 (1.5 ≤ x ≤ 2.5) alloys exhibit an antiferromagnetic ground state. It is further revealed that the antiferromagnetic state gets transformed into a forced ferromagnetic state by way of a magnetic-field-induced metamagnetic transition. The results demonstrate a progressive reinforcement of the antiferromagnetic interactions upon increasing Fe content along the YCo12−xFexB6 series of compounds. The magnetic phase diagram of each (x = 1.5, 2, and 2.5) composition is determined by combining isothermal and isofield magnetization measurements. The composition and temperature dependencies of the critical field are derived and discussed. Whereas for x = 2 and 2.5, the magnetic state changes from antiferromagnetic (AFM) to ferromagnetic (FM) and then to the paramagnetic (PM) state upon heating, exhibiting three distinct temperature regions, a multicritical point of magnetic origin is proposed for the x = 1.5 compound at a temperature of about 117 K. The ordering temperature is found to decrease upon increasing Fe concentration, while the critical field of the AFM-FM metamagnetic phase transition shows the opposite trend. Structural and magnetic properties of the Shastry-Sutherland material Yb2Pt2Pb were studied in single-crystalline form under pressures up to 10 GPa, magnetic fields up to 17 T, and temperatures down to 0.3 K. Surprisingly robust magnetic order is observed with the Néel temperature TN = 2.1 K stable up to 8.1 GPa. Indication of an additional magnetic phase formation can be traced in resistivity data for magnetic field along the c-axis exceeding the (pressure-dependent) metamagnetic transition. The related anomaly shifts to higher temperatures with increasing field, merging TN at the tricritical point. Experiments with μ0H // [110] revealed the pressure stabilization of observed magnetic phases with respect to the magnetic field. The crystal-structure type is stable up to 10 GPa, without any sign of symmetry change, exhibiting moderate volume compressibility with bulk modulus B = 116(13) GPa, in good agreement with B = 118 GPa provided by the density functional theory. We describe high-field X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) setup developed at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility beamline ID12, which is dedicated to polarization dependent X-ray absorption spectroscopy in the soft and hard X-ray range from 2 to 15 keV. The static magnetic field up to 17 T is generated by a superconducting solenoid. Performance of the setup is illustrated with three representative studies: metamagnetic transitions in PrCo2Ge2 single crystal, Pauli paramagnetism in uranium monocarbide, and induced magnetism on gold atoms in different environment: MnAu4, UAu4 and a pure gold metal. In this work, we fabricated the RE 2 O 2 SO 4 (RE = Gd, Tb, Dy and Ho) oxides by thermal decomposition and systematically determined regarding their structural and magnetic properties, especially of the magnetic phase transition (MPT) and magnetocaloric effect (MCE). All of these RE 2 O 2 SO 4 oxides are confirmed to crystallize in an orthogonal structure (space group: pmnb); the constituting elements are all distributed uniformly and presented as the RE 3+, S6+, and O2− valence states, respectively. They all exhibit a typical cryogenic MPT from paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic (AFM) state together with a field-induced metamagnetic transition (first-order type MPT) from AFM to ferromagnetic state below their MPT temperatures. All of these RE 2 O 2 SO 4 oxides exhibit considerable direct and inverse cryogenic MCE. The determined direct magnetocaloric parameters of present RE 2 O 2 SO 4 oxides, especially of Gd 2 O 2 SO 4 and Ho 2 O 2 SO 4 oxides, are comparable with most of recently reported RE -based magnetic solids, making them also considerable for practical cryogenic MR applications. UTe2 possesses a complex phase landscape comprising two magnetic field-induced superconducting phases, a metamagnetic transition to a field-polarized state, along with pair- and charge-density wave orders. Heavy rare-earth-based ternary intermetallic compounds with the formula RT2X2 have drawn great interest because of their multiple magnetic transitions and various magnetic structures. Here, anisotropic magnetic behaviors, magnetocaloric effects (MCEs), and magnetostriction effects in single-crystalline GdMn2Ge2 are studied in two different directions. Experiments show a magnetic transition characterized by a sudden decrease in magnetization for μ0H//a and a sharp increase for μ0H//c at Tt. The transition is driven by lower temperatures for μ0H//a, contrasting that for μ0H//c with an increase in the magnetic field. An inverse MCE is observed for μ0H//a with a maximum magnetic entropy change (− Δ S M max ) of −7.4 J kg−1 K−1 (μ0ΔH = 6 T), while a direct MCE is obtained for μ0H//c with an − Δ S M max of 8.0 J kg−1 K−1 under the same magnetic field change. Moreover, a remarkable field-induced metamagnetic transition and a magnetostriction effect are observed simultaneously at Tt, indicating strong magneto-lattice coupling. The T-μ0H phase diagrams are constructed based on the magnetic properties. Frustrated rare-earth-based intermetallics provide a promising platform for emergent magnetotransport properties through exchange coupling between conduction electrons and localized rare-earth magnetic moments. Metamagnetism, the abrupt change of magnetization under an external magnetic field, is a signature of first-order magnetic phase transitions; recently, metamagnetic transitions in frustrated rare earth intermetallics have attracted interest for their accompanying nontrivial spin structures (e.g., skyrmions) and associated nonlinear and topological Hall effects (THE). Here, we present metamagnetism-induced Hall anomalies in single-crystalline ErGa2, which recalls features arising from the THE but wherein the strong Ising-type anisotropy of Er moments prohibits noncoplanar spin structures. We show that the observed anomalies are neither due to anomalous Hall effect nor THE; instead, can be accounted for via 4f-5d interactions which produce a band-dependent mobility modulation. This leads to a pronounced multiband Hall response across the magnetization process-a metamagnetic multiband Hall effect that resembles a topological-Hall-like response but without nontrivial origins. The present findings may be of general relevance in itinerant metamagnetic systems regardless of coplanar/noncoplanar nature of spins and are important for the accurate identification of Hall signals due to emergent magnetic fields. Magnetism in two-dimensional materials reveals phenomena distinct from bulk magnetic crystals, with sensitivity to charge doping and electric fields in monolayer and bilayer van der Waals magnet CrI3. Within the class of layered magnets, semiconducting CrSBr stands out by featuring stability under ambient conditions, correlating excitons with magnetic order and thus providing strong magnon-exciton coupling, and exhibiting peculiar magneto-optics of exciton-polaritons. Here, we demonstrate that both exciton and magnetic transitions in bilayer and trilayer CrSBr are sensitive to voltage-controlled field-effect charging, exhibiting bound exciton-charge complexes and doping-induced metamagnetic transitions. Moreover, we demonstrate how these unique properties enable optical probes of local magnetic order, visualizing magnetic domains of competing phases across metamagnetic transitions induced by magnetic field or electrostatic doping. Our work identifies few-layer CrSBr as a rich platform for exploring collaborative effects of charge, optical excitations, and magnetism. CrSBr is a van der Waals layered antiferromagnet. Unlike many other van der Waals magnetic materials it is air stable, and in addition hosts a rich array of magneto-optical responses. A study of Nd based cuprate francisite (NdCufr) is fascinating due to the presence of competing magnetic interactions in this geometrically frustrated layered compound, and Ni doping helps in tailoring these interactions. Here, Ni doped NdCufr is synthesized to compare its magnetic properties with pristine and Co doped NdCufr. Structural (x-ray diffraction, XRD), electronic (x-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy, XANES, and extended x-ray absorption fine structure, EXAFS), and magnetic (temperature dependent magnetization, M–T; field dependent magnetization, M–B) properties are investigated. The XRD, XANES, and EXAFS measurement data show a perfect crystal structure and confirm the merit of doping. A comprehensive comparison for examining the role of Co and Ni in modulation with ferromagnetic–antiferromagnetic interaction strength is presented. A crucial interplay of intra- and interlayer couplings, along with f–d interaction, effectively describes the tuning of Neel temperature (TN) and M–B. Detailed processes of field induced metamagnetic transition around the spin-flip ordering field (BSF), which is equal to that of the critical field (BC) and doping induced ferromagnetism, are addressed considering the relative spin orientations of magnetic elements and energy level splitting schemes, respectively. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a widely used clinical diagnostic tool, which is based on the principle of nuclear magnetic resonance of hydrogen atoms in human body. The Larmor frequency of precession of the hydrogen atoms is determined by the strength of static magnetic field (B0) of MRI. A higher B0 can directly improve signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of MRI. However, this method involves expensive hardware installation, which could have adverse effects of tissue-heating and make MRI unsafe for patients with medical implants. Hence, efforts have been made to increase the SNR of MRI without increasing B0. An effective solution in this direction would be to boost the radiofrequency (RF) magnetic fields emitted by the body part undergoing scan, particularly by using metamaterials. The higher the received RF signal strength, the greater the SNR of MRI. For a metamaterial to be used as an "add-on" in commercial scanners, its dimensions need to be designed appropriately so that it fits in the available gap between the transceiver coil and the human body. In this article, a 10-mm-thick metallo-dielectric metamaterial is designed by a stacking of alternate square-shaped capacitive patches and inductive apertures for enhancing the RF magnetic flux density and hence, the SNR of a 1.5 T MRI system. The inter-layer electromagnetic coupling in the stacked structure is deployed for spatial localization of magnetic fields at the resonant frequency (∼64 MHz) which is equal to the Larmor frequency of 1.5 T MRI. An equivalent circuit model, comprising a lumped-element third order bandpass filter, validated the transmissivity characteristics of the metamaterial obtained using full-wave simulations. Magnetic flux density enhancement by a factor of 55 is obtained when the metamaterial add-on is placed between a surface coil and a bio-model of human head. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

All-dielectric metasurfaces have been attracting much attention. Low optical losses and a huge variety of optical modes provide unique possibilities for light manipulation at the nanoscale. Recent studies showed that the magneto-optical effects in such metasurfaces are enormously enhanced. Moreover, it is possible to observe novel magneto-optical effects that are absent in smooth films. Excitation of particular photonic resonances makes it possible to design the magneto-optical interaction by the metasurface design. The material has a half-sawtooth one-dimensional (1-D) structure containing two unique Co2+ ions, one in the chain backbone and one on the apex of the sawtooth creating a series of isosceles triangles along the b-axis. These triangles can be a source of magnetic frustration. The ability to grow large single crystals enables detailed magnetic measurements with the crystals oriented in a magnetic field along the respective axes. It has a Curie–Weiss temperature CW of 5.3(2) K with an effective magnetic moment of 4.8(3)μB/Co. The material is highly anisotropic with a sharp antiferromagnetic ordering transition at 7 K with a metamagnetic transition at 2 kOe. Neutron diffraction was used to determine the magnetic structure and revealed a magnetic structure with canted spins along the backbone of the chain while spins along the sawtooth caps maintained a colinear orientation, arranging antiferromagnetically relative to the backbone spins. In this research, we have tried to investigate the effect of the cationic disorder on charge ordering and magnetic phase separation in La 0.5-x Eu x Ca 0.5-y Ba y MnO 3 (x = 0, 0.05, and 0.1) compounds synthesized by using the sol-gel method. All the samples possess the same average ionic radius at A site and the same Mn3+/Mn4+ ratio. Our analysis confirmed the chemical composition by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and verified the structural integrity and purity of the phase by X-ray diffraction, revealing an orthorhombic structure with Pnma space group, which is in agreement with the tolerance factor. The important mismatch effect observed in the substituted specimens induces drastic effects on the structural and microstructural properties. Magnetic measurements indicate a great reduction of Curie temperature for substituted samples (from 250 K for x = 0 to 90 K for x = 0.05 and 85 K for x = 0.1), which indicates a weakening of ferromagnetic double exchange interactions induced by cationic disorder. The Arrott plots and the magnetocaloric study of the Eu−based samples indicate the persistence of the antiferromagnetic charge-ordered state characterizing the pristine compound (x = 0) as well as the presence of a first-ordered metamagnetic transition for all the studied samples, which is ascribed to the presence of antiferromagnetic domains. Such transition induced the appearance of a shoulder peak near 100 K in the magnetic entropy change curves for high magnetic field values, resulting in an extra cooling efficiency. Two 1D CN-bridged assemblies: the nearly straight Li2[Ni(cyclam)][Nb(CN)8]·7.5H2O (1) chains and the zigzag-shaped Li2[Ni(cyclam)][Nb(CN)8]·2H2O (2) chains, are obtained in the reaction between [Ni(cyclam)]2+ and [Nb(CN)8]4− in warm concentrated LiCl water solution. Both compounds are composed of alternating bimetallic Ni(II)–Nb(IV) chains and contain incorporated lithium cations, which compensate the negative charge of the coordination skeleton. The straight chain 1 (Ni–Nb–Ni angle = 153.2°) can be reversibly dehydrated under dry nitrogen flow at room temperature to an intermediate dihydrate phase 1d and further transformed to the zigzag-shaped chain 2 (Ni–Nb–Ni angle = 86.6°) by annealing at 150 °C. The process can be reversed by exposure to high humidity at room temperature, upon which 2 is converted back to 1. This water sorption-induced breathing effect is accompanied by changes in magnetic properties, most notably reflected in different values of saturation magnetization and critical field of metamagnetic transition, which indicate that both intra- and inter-chain interactions are affected by the structure reorganization. Heterostructures of ferromagnetic (FM) and noble metal (NM) thin films have recently attracted considerable interest as viable platforms for the ultrafast generation, control, and transduction of light-induced spin currents. In such systems, an ultrafast laser can generate a transient spin current in the FM layer, which is then converted to a charge current at the FM/NM interface due to strong spin–orbit coupling in the NM layer. Whether such conversion can happen in a single material and how the resulting spin current can be quantified are open questions under active study. Here, we report ultrafast THz emission from spin–charge conversion in a bare FeRh thin film without any NM layer. Our results highlight that the magnetic material by itself can enable spin–charge conversion in the same order as that in a FM/NM heterostructure. We further propose a simple model to estimate the light-induced spin current in FeRh across its metamagnetic phase transition temperature. The stacking of intrinsically magnetic van der Waals materials provides a fertile platform to explore tunable transport effects of magnons, presenting significant prospects for spintronic applications. The possibility of having topologically nontrivial magnons in these systems can further expand the scope of exploration. In this work, we consider a bilayer system with intralayer ferromagnetic exchange and a weak interlayer antiferromagnetic exchange and study the topological magnon-polaron excitations induced by magnetoelastic couplings. Under an applied magnetic field, the system features a metamagnetic transition, where the magnetic ground state changes from antiparallel layers to parallel. We show that the metamagnetic transition is accompanied by a transition of the topological structure of the magnon polarons, which results in discernible changes in the topology induced transport effects. They were synthesized via arc‐melting and analyzed by EDX and X‐ray diffraction. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations predicted a preference for magnetic ordering in all members, but with a strong competition between ferro‐ and antiferromagnetism arising from interchain Fe−Fe interactions. The spin exchange and magnetic anisotropy energies predicted the lowest magnetic hardness for x=1 and 3 and the highest for x=2. Magnetization measurements confirm the DFT predictions and demonstrate that the antiferromagnetic ordering (TN=55–70 K) found at low magnetic fields changed to ferromagnetic (TC=150–750 K) at higher fields, suggesting metamagnetic behavior for all samples. Ferroelectricity and magnetism seldom coexist due to mutual exclusiveness. Recent attempts have been made to achieve the coexistence of ferroelectricity and magnetism in polar magnets. In this paper, we investigated the magnetic properties, dielectric relaxation, and magnetodielectric (MD) effect of polar Dy2Cu2O5 ceramic. At the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature, the dielectric constant (ɛ) curves exhibit a spontaneous change in slope, indicating strongly coupled charge and spin degrees of freedom. With increase in the magnetic field intensity, the simultaneous suppression of the dielectric anomaly and the antiferromagnetic transformation demonstrates the existence of the MD effect. It is important to note that ɛ varies nonmonotonically with the magnetic field. Below the magnetic ordering temperature, ɛ increases continuously before the metamagnetic transition and then decreases after that. The results are discussed in terms of the magnetic field-induced change of spin configuration and spin–phonon coupling. We report a dual-component anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in polycrystalline Fe3Ga4 thin films grown on STO (001) and Al2O3 substrates. Systematic magnetic and magnetotransport measurements reveal an AHE consisting of positive and negative contributions that coexist across a wide range of temperatures and magnetic phases. We find that both magnitudes are nearly equal in the low-temperature ferromagnetic (FM) phase, but that their relative ratio is reduced upon heating through the antiferromagnetic helical spin-spiral state where they compete with metamagnetism and topological Hall effects, maintaining finite values at least up to the high-temperature FM phase. We study a hybrid system composed of a chiral quantum dot and a dielectric nanoparticle subjected to an electromagnetic wave. We aim to show that the hybrid system features synergistic properties caused by interactions between its components. We solve the Bloch equation for the density matrix of the chiral quantum dot modeled as a two-level system with transition electric and magnetic dipole moments. We show that the system acts as a bianisotropic meta-atom: The electric polarization (magnetization) can be induced by the incident magnetic (electric) field. The electromagnetic and magnetoelectric polarizability dyadics of the hybrid system are influenced by the nanoparticle size and separation and the intensity and polarization of the incident wave. Due to the self-interaction of the quantum dot in the presence of the nanoparticle, the system exhibits optical activity and circular dichroism spectra of different character in Fano, double peaks, weak transition, and strong transition regions of the parameter space. Notably, in the strong transition region, the optical activity and circular dichroism spectra become discontinuous and dependent on the initial state of the system. The magnetic dipole moment induced in the dielectric nanoparticle plays a key role: Indeed, unlike the isolated chiral quantum dot, the hybrid system exhibits strong circular dichroism in a broad frequency range. The chiral quantum dot-dielectric nanoparticle meta-atom offers unique opportunities for creating low-loss all-dielectric meta-surfaces operating in the visible spectral range. The study of the magnetic, electronic transport, and magnetotransport properties of La0.9Ce0.1Fe12B6 itinerant-electron system has been performed by combining magnetization, electrical resistivity, and magnetoresistance experiments. Along with the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering at TN = 35 K, two consecutive magnetic transformations, antiferromagnetic–ferromagnetic (AFM–FM) and ferromagnetic–paramagnetic (FM–PM), occur upon heating under certain magnetic field values. At fixed temperatures, it is revealed that both AFM and PM phases can be converted into the FM phase irreversibly and reversibly via a first-order metamagnetic transition associated with a large hysteresis. Below 8 K, the metamagnetic transition is discontinuous, manifesting itself by multiple sudden jumps in magnetoresistance and magnetization. A giant negative magnetoresistance effect of about −78% is found. We further demonstrate that the time dependencies of the electrical resistivity and the magnetization exhibit colossal spontaneous steps after an incubation time in conditions where both the applied magnetic field and temperature are constant. Another intriguing observation in the phase diagram is the presence of a critical point at the crossover of the three distinct PM, FM, and AFM magnetic states. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Magnetic imaging based on nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond has emerged as a powerful tool for probing magnetic phenomena in fields ranging from biology to physics. A key strength of NV sensing is its local-probe nature, enabling high-resolution spatial images of magnetic stray fields emanating from a sample. However, this local character can also form a drawback for analyzing the global properties of a system, such as a phase transition temperature. Here, we address this challenge by using statistical analyses of magnetic-field maps to characterize the first-order temperature-driven metamagnetic phase transition from the antiferromagnetic to the ferromagnetic state in FeRh. After imaging the phase transition and identifying the regimes of nucleation, growth, and coalescence of ferromagnetic domains, we statistically characterize the spatial magnetic-field maps to extract the transition temperature and thermal hysteresis width. By analyzing the spatial correlations of the maps in relation to the magnetocrystalline anisotropy and external magnetic field, we detect a reorientation of domain walls across the phase transition. A single crystal of the ternary uranium silicide UIr 2 Si 2 was studied by means of of X-ray diffraction, magnetization, heat capacity and electrical transport measurements. The studied compound orders antiferromagnetically at the Néel temperature of 5.5 K and undergoes a metamagnetic transition at 1.8 K in a field of 1.52 T. Two-dimensional magnets and superconductors are emerging as tunable building-blocks for quantum computing and superconducting spintronic devices, and have been used to fabricate all two-dimensional versions of traditional devices, such as Josephson junctions. However, novel devices enabled by unique features of two-dimensional materials have not yet been demonstrated. Here, we present NbSe2/CrSBr van der Waals superconducting spin valves that exhibit infinite magnetoresistance and nonreciprocal charge transport. These responses arise from a unique metamagnetic transition in CrSBr, which controls the presence of localized stray fields suitably oriented to suppress the NbSe2 superconductivity in nanoscale regions and to break time reversal symmetry. Moreover, by integrating different CrSBr crystals in a lateral heterostructure, we demonstrate a superconductive spin valve characterized by multiple stable resistance states. Our results show how the unique physical properties of layered materials enable the realization of high-performance quantum devices based on novel working principles. By employing semi-flexible multi-N donor auxiliary ligands, namely 1,4-bis(5-pyrimidyl)benzene (bpmb) in conjunction with azide, novel Co(II) 2D coordination polymers have been successfully synthesized and structurally characterized, along with magnetic analysis. The resulting compound, {Co(N3)(bpmb)(H2O)2·H2O}n (1), exhibits a unique 2D structure comprised of interconnected Co(II) chains bridged by single end-to-end (EE) azide moieties. These chains are further linked by twisted trans-μ2-N,N′-bpmb auxiliary ligands, forming a grid-like network. Additionally, the layers are held together in a 3D arrangement through hydrogen bonding interactions between the coordination water and the N atom of the bpmb ligands. Importantly, magnetic investigations reveal that compound 1 displays weak ferromagnetism attributed to spin canting, with a critical temperature (Tc) of 12 K. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The multiferroic YMn0.5Cr0.5O3 (YMCO) compound possesses magnetic phases that are debatable for their origin in intrinsic and extrinsic attributes. To extract the contribution of the polycrystalline disorder as well as determine the effect of structural modifications and epitaxial strain on the magnetic properties, we have formed YMCO bulk in polycrystalline pellet and powder forms, and epitaxial thin films with a wide range of compressive and tensile strains. The temperature and field dependent magnetization of polycrystals discards the possibility of magnetization reversal and unveils the presence of multidomain states with soft and hard characters in powder form. The epitaxial YMCO films possess an extraordinary structural control of their magnetic properties, as the tuning of compressive strain results in an increase of 4–5 factors of magnitude in the saturation magnetic moment. This strain engineering further allows a tuning of the magnetic property from spin frustration/short-range ordering to the long-range ordering, which also induces a rare phenomenon of sharp step-like metamagnetic transition. The implementation of magneto-terahertz time-domain spectroscopy on this system does not show the manifestation of any magnon/electromaganon resonance typical of a magnetoelectric phase, thus suggesting either a very weak or lack of coupling between magnetic and electric ordered parameters in polycrystalline YMCO. This study resolves some longstanding issues on the magnetic and magnetoelectric phases in addition to the epitaxial control of large magnetization and metamagnetic transition being potentially relevant in several aspects of spintronics applications. Valence electron concentration (e/a) dependence of phase transition temperature TM, i.e., a higher e/a leading to an elevated TM, is a well-accepted criterion for the Ni–Mn-based alloys. However, this tendency is not always obeyed by certain alloy systems, such as the Ni2Mn(Ga, Z) alloys (Z = Si, Ge, and Sn). The origin of this abnormal behavior remains uncovered. In this work, by first-principles calculations, the origin of the abnormal e/a dependence of phase stability in the Ni2MnGa1−xSix (x = 0–1) alloys is elucidated through examining the electronic structure, phonon, and magnetism. We find that the abnormal e/a dependence of phase stability intrinsically originated from the chemical composition change. The composition variation brings about a reduction of the minority-spin electronic states near the Fermi energy and the weakness of the Fermi surface nesting. Moreover, the substitution of Si for Ga leads to a decreased magnetization of austenite and an increased magnetization of martensite, which also makes a non-negligible contribution to the abnormal phase stability. The conclusions drawn for the Ni2MnGa1−xSix alloys can be well extended to understand the structural transition in other abnormal alloying systems, such as the Ni2MnGa1−xZx alloys (Z = Ge and Sn). This work clarifies the origin of the abnormal dependence of phase stability on e/a in the Ni–Mn-based alloys and provides solid knowledge for the design of advanced magnetic shape memory alloys. In this study, the influence of interstitial C atoms on the magnetostructural transformation and magnetocaloric effect in MnNi0.77Fe0.23GeCx (x = 0, 0.02, and 0.03) compounds has been investigated. The introduction of C atoms into the interstitial sites of the MnNi0.77Fe0.23Ge compounds leads to the enhanced stability of the orthorhombic phase, thus enhancing the structural transition temperature. Moreover, the critical field of antiferromagnetic (AFM)–ferromagnetic (FM) conversion significantly decreases following C atom incorporation. Therefore, it can be inferred that C atoms can promote the AFM–FM conversion in the TiNiSi-type orthorhombic phase. The MnNi0.77Fe0.23GeCx compound with x = 0.02 exhibits a large magnetocaloric effect due to the ferromagnetic magnetostructural transition. Furthermore, for the compound with x = 0.03, a table-like magnetocaloric effect is observed around room temperature owing to the coupling of the martensitic and metamagnetic transitions, which confirms the wide working temperature range and a large refrigerant capacity. The magnetocaloric effect in the Fe49Rh51 alloy was systematically studied using three different approaches: in-field differential scanning calorimetry, standard direct measurement of the adiabatic temperature change, and a non-contact method based on a thermo-optical phenomenon, the mirage effect, which was able to directly test the magnetocaloric response induced by a fast magnetic field variation. The metamagnetic phase transition of Fe49Rh51 was studied in the temperature range of 290–330 K at magnetic fields up to 1.8 T through magnetic and calorimetric measurements. The estimated parameters of phase transition were comparable with the literature data. The values of adiabatic temperature change obtained with the three methods (calorimetry, standard direct measurement, and mirage-based technique), which explore three different time scales of the field variation (static field, 1 T s−1, 770 T s−1), were consistent, proving the absence of dynamic constraints in the first-order magnetostructural transition at the maximum field sweep rate. A coordination polymer of linear trimeric cobalt units and melamine has been synthesized. The magnetic isotherms of violet coloured crystals as long as 400 μm show a field-induced transition in an external field of about 2 T at temperatures approximately below 2 K. It is addressed that by assuming the coexistent positive and negative exchange between the nearest-neighbour spins in the linear trimer, this metamagnetism can be interpreted as a transition from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic exchange within each trimeric spin cluster. Although weak inter-cluster or inter-chain exchange to yield a long-range magnetic order is another possible and often attributed origin of metamagnetism in low-dimensional spin systems, this study demonstrates the significance of the exchange flip within each cluster in clustered spin networks.

In this study, magnetostriction measurements were performed on the ferromagnetic Heusler alloy, Ni2MnGa0.88Cu0.12, which is characterized by the occurrence of the martensitic phase and ferromagnetic transitions at the same temperature. In the austenite and martensite phases, the alloy crystallizes in the L21 and D022-like crystal structure, respectively. As the crystal structure changes at the martensitic transition temperature (TM), a large magnetostriction due to the martensitic and ferromagnetic transitions induced by magnetic fields is expected to occur. First, magnetization (M-H) measurements are performed, and metamagnetic transitions are observed in the magnetic field of μ0H = 4 T at 344 K. This result shows that the phase transition was induced by the magnetic field under a constant temperature. Forced magnetostriction measurements (ΔL/L) are then performed under a constant temperature and atmospheric pressure (P = 0.1 MPa). Magnetostriction up to 1300 ppm is observed around TM. The magnetization results and magnetostriction measurements showed the occurrence of the magnetic-field-induced strain from the paramagnetic austenite phase to the ferromagnetic martensite phase. As a reference sample, we measure the magnetostriction of the Ni2MnGa-type (Ni50Mn30Ga20) alloy, which causes the martensite phase transition at TM = 315 K. The measurement of magnetostriction at room temperature (298 K) showed a magnetostriction of 3300 ppm. The magnetostriction of Ni2MnGa0.88Cu0.12 is observed to be one-third that of Ni50Mn30Ga20 but larger than that of Terfenol-D (800 ppm), which is renowned as the giant magnetostriction alloy. A 2-Q antiferromagnetic order of the ferromagnetic dimers was found below TN = 2.9 K in the Shastry-Sutherland lattice BaNd2ZnS5 by single crystal neutron diffraction. The magnetic order can be understood by the orthogonal arrangement of local Ising Nd spins, identified by polarized neutrons. A field was applied along [1 -1 0] to probe the observed metamagnetic transition in the magnetization measurement. The field decouples two magnetic sublattices corresponding to the propagation vectors q1 = (½, ½, 0) and q2 = (−½, ½, 0), respectively. Each sublattice shows a "stripe" order with a Néel-type arrangement in each single layer. The "stripe" order with q1 remains nearly intact up to 6 T, while the other one with q2 is suppressed at a critical field Hc ~1.7 T, indicating a partial disorder. The Hc varies with temperature and is manifested in the H-T phase diagram constructed by measuring the magnetization in BaNd2ZnS5. Shastry-Sutherland lattice materials offer a rich variety of accessible magnetic phases however, only a few have been observed to have ferromagnetic dimers, and among those, high quality single crystals are rare. Here, Marshall et al uses neutron diffraction on single crystals of BaNd2ZnS5, and show the existence of 2Q-antiferromagnetic order composed of ferromagnetic dimers and field-induced partial disorder. The YbCoC2 compound, which crystallizes in a base-centered orthorhombic unit cell in the  A m m 2  space group CeNiC2 structure, is unique among Yb-based compounds due to the highest magnetic ordering temperature of  T N = 27  K. Magnetization measurements have made it possible to plot the H-T magnetic phase diagram and determine the magnetocaloric effect of this recently discovered high-temperature heavy-fermion compound, YbCoC2. YbCoC2 undergoes spin transformation to the spin-polarized state through a metamagnetic transition in an external magnetic field. The transition is found to be of the first order. The dependencies of magnetic entropy change  Δ S m (T) —have segments with positive and negative magnetocaloric effects for  Δ H ≤ 6  T. We have performed detailed magnetic and anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) measurements on a magnetic-field-induced topological Weyl semimetal, TbPtBi, exhibiting a weak metamagnetic transition in the antiferromagnetic state. The magnetic torque and temperature-dependent AMR measurements indicate that the spin order dominates the symmetry of AMR curves at temperature below Neel temperature (TN) and low magnetic fields. Remarkably, the AMR with a twofold symmetry gradually dominates the curves as the magnetic fields increase. Moreover, sign change in the AMR effect is confirmed for both T < TN and T > TN at high magnetic fields, which may be related to the magnetic field-induced splitting of the topological band in TbPtBi. We investigate the complex magnetic behavior of LaFe12B6 by means of magnetostriction, and thermal expansion measurements in applied fields of up to 14 T, elucidating the interplay between crystal lattice and spins. As main results, we have discovered a remarkably large negative thermal expansion (NTE) and giant magnetostriction in this itinerant-electron system. Of particular interest are the low-temperature magnetostriction isotherms (T ≤ 5 K) all of which reach saturation discontinuously, by way of ultrasharp multistep transitions. These are rather unusual kind of first-order phase transitions. By contrast, the field-dependent magnetostriction varies smoothly at temperatures exceeding 5 K. A huge positive magnetostrictive effect of ΔV/V (20 K, 14 T) = 0.87% accompanies the field-induced first-order metamagnetic transition. Herein, the anisotropic magnetic properties of 2D van der Waals (vdW) insulator, chromium oxychloride (CrOCl), are presented. Temperature‐dependent bulk magnetization reveals a paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic phase transition at ≈14 K (Néel temperature, TN) while cooling. From the magnetic field‐dependent magnetization study (M–H) at low temperature, a first‐order field‐induced (at or above 40 kOe) metamagnetic transition from antiferromagnetic to ferrimagnetic state has been observed. Noticeably, switching of the easy plane (ab‐plane) of the magnetization to the c‐axis can be identified above 29 kOe. Moreover, in the vicinity of TN, under an applied magnetic field, magnetic entropy change (ΔSM) can be estimated as 4.31 J kg−1 K−1 for H//c. The results evoke further experiments on charge/spin transport properties of few‐layer CrOCl in the nanoelectronic circuit framework for understanding the connection between crystallographic deformation and metamagnetism.
