Background: Carboxylesterase 1(CES1) is expressed mainly in the liver and adipose tissue and is highly hypothesized to play an essential role in metabolism. Our study aimed to investigate the association between CES1 and metabolic syndrome (MetS) and metabolic dysfunction associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) in children with obesity in China. Methods: This study included 72 children with obesity aged 6-13years (including 25(35%) diagnosed as MetS and 36(50%) diagnosed as MASLD). All subjects were measured in anthropometry, serum level of biochemical parameters related to obesity, circumstance levels of insulin-like growth factor1, adipokines (adiponectin, leptin and growth differentiation factor 15) and CES1. Results: Higher serum CES1 level were found in the MetS group (P = 0.004) and the MASLD group (P < 0.001) of children with obesity. Serum CES1 levels were positively correlated with alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, triglyceride, cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, GDF15, Leptin and negatively correlated with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, adiponectin and IGF1. We also found a multivariable logistic regression analysis of MASLD and MetS predicted by CES1 significantly (MASLD P < 0.01, MetS P < 0.05). The combination of CES1, sex, age and BMI Z-score showed a sensitivity and specificity of 92.7% for the identification of MASLD and 78.6% for the identification of MetS. The cutoff for CES1 of MASLD is 56.30 ng/mL and of MetS is 97.79 ng/mL. Conclusions: CES1 is associated with an increasing risk of MetS and MASLD and can be established as a biomarker for metabolic syndrome and MASLD of children with obesity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study is to assess the changes in metabolic syndrome parameters among adults after the implementation of nutrition education. The research was conducted as a prospective, longitudinal, quasi-experimental evaluation study from May to December 2022. The research sample included 31 employees at the College of Vocational Studies in Subotica. The study was conducted in three phases: Initial assessment (anthropometric, clinical, biochemical measurements and eating habits), Nutrition educations (onloine and face-to-dace) and Evaluative assessment (six months after the initial assessment). Data analysis included methods of descriptive and comparative statistical analysis. Nutrition education was conducted for 31 participants, but only 18 responded to the evaluative assessment. Two thirds (62%) of the participants were overweight ad had elevated cholesterol levels. Elevated triglyceride values were registered in more than a half of the participants and high blood glucose levels in 13% of participants. More than a third of the participants had three or four risk factors for the development of metabolic syndrome. After nutrition education, distribution of participants according io BMI significantly changed (I—normal: 37%; overveigt: 31%; obese:29%; E—normal:10%; overveigt:29%; obese:19%; p = 0,001). Significant changes in the distribution of total cholesterol levels (I: 5.7 mmol/l; E: 5.4 mmol/l) was determined at the evaluative assessment (p = 0.005). Statistically changes in the distribution of breakfast (p = 0.001) and vegetables (p = 0.013) intake were observed. There were not determined significant changes in other antropometric, clinical and biochemical parameters after nutrition education. Although the nutrition education intervention showed some changes in the prevalence of risk factors, significant changes require more intensive, long-term interventions tailored to individual needs. Background: Promoting prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients might occur secondary to RA therapy as well as sedentary life style. However, conflicting observations have been reported on the correlation between MetS and RA. This study aimed to determine the frequency of MetS and association of its components in RA. Methods: In this study, 500 RA patients and 500 age- and gender-matched healthy controls were enrolled. MetS was fulfilled through the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) criteria. A multivariate regression model was used to control for variables independently associated with the risk of MetS in RA patients. Results: The prevalence of MetS was 58.8% on IDF criteria in RA patients that was higher than controls (20.4%). Higher incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD), the familial history of CVD, hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), smoking, dyslipidemia, and higher levels of body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), total cholesterol level, fasting blood sugar (FBS), triglyceride (TG) level, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) level, while lower levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) were associated with an increased risk of MetS in RA patients. Multivariate regression analysis indicated that age, WC, dyslipidemia, LDL, and DAS28 were independent predictors of MetS in the RA patients. Conclusions: The prevalence of MetS is higher in RA patients. Our findings suggest an association between cardiovascular risk factors and the increased prevalence of MetS in RA patients. Background: Numerous studies have revealed the role of dietary fatty acids in human health. However, few studies have evaluated dietary fatty acid patterns and their association with metabolic parameters. The current study aimed to explore the association between dietary fatty acid patterns and risk factors for metabolic syndrome (MetS) among overweight and obese adults. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 340 participants who were overweight or obese. The study included assessments of body composition and anthropometric measurements. Dietary fatty acid consumption was evaluated using a validated Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) containing 168 items. Additionally, biochemical parameters, including serum total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), fasting serum glucose (FSG), and insulin levels, were measured using enzymatic methods. Fatty acid patterns were determined by principal component analysis (PCA), and the association between these dietary FA patterns and risk factors related to MetS components was assessed using logistic regression. Results: Factor analysis conducted in this study explored three dietary fatty acid patterns: saturated fatty acids (SFA), polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), and long-chain combined fatty acids (LC-CFA). Those at the highest tertile of the SFA pattern had lower diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (P = 0.03). Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL) was lower in the second and third tertiles (P ≤ 0.05). Also, higher fasting blood glucose (FBS) was observed in the second and third tertiles (P < 0.05), and the homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) was higher in the third tertile (P = 0.049). In the PUFA pattern, FBS was lower in the third tertile (P = 0.03). In the LC-CFA pattern, lower TC was achieved in higher tertiles (P = 0.04). Conclusion: Our findings demonstrated that consuming high and moderate SFA patterns is associated with higher FBS and HOMA-IR. Also, increased consumption of SCFAs is related to lower DPB and LDL. Individuals who consumed more PUFA, especially linoleic acid, had lower FBS. These outcomes might be beneficial in managing MetS and leading to a new field of research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: This prospective cohort study aimed to investigate the association between ultra-processed food (UPF) and the risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS), as well as to assess whether fruit and vegetable intake and weight change modify this association. Methods: We included 1915 healthy participants who participated in the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (TLGS), all of whom had complete demographic, anthropometric, and dietary measurements. A validated food frequency questionnaire was used to assess UPF consumption based on the NOVA classification system. MetS was defined according to the Joint Interim Statement. Multivariable adjusted Cox regression was used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) for MetS events across tertiles of UPF. The effect of fruit and vegetable consumption and weight change on this association was assessed using joint classification by Cox regression. Results: UFP consumption showed no association with MetS risk after adjusting for confounders. However, after adjustment for dietary fiber, fruits, and vegetables, the highest tertile of UPF consumption was positively linked to MetS risk, compared to the lowest tertile. There was a significant interaction between fruit, vegetable, and dietary fiber intake and UPF consumption concerning the risk of MetS (All P values < 0.05). Among individuals consuming less than 248 g/day of fruit, the risk of MetS increased by 54% (confidence interval: 1.13–2.10) in the highest UPF tertile. Consuming vegetables and dietary fiber below the median (258 g/day and 42.2 g/day, respectively) increased the risk of MetS in the third tertile of UPF. However, consuming vegetables and fiber ≥ median intake, reduced the risk of MetS among those with the lowest UPF consumption. Furthermore, the risk of MetS was observed in the third tertile of UPF consumption among individuals with fruit and vegetable consumption < 537 g/day. UPF consumption was not associated with the risk of MetS in different weight change statuses. Summary: Background and Objectives: This study aimed to examine the associations between breastfeeding duration and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in adolescents and to further investigate the role of birth weight for gestational age (GA) on these associations. Methods: A total of 10 275 participants aged 7 to 18 years were included applying multistage cluster random sampling from a Chinese national survey. Birth weight was classified into small for GA (SGA), appropriate for GA (AGA) and large for GA (LGA). Information was collected through a self‐administered questionnaire, physical examination and blood biochemical examination. Multivariable linear regression, logistic regression models, restricted cubic spline models were applied to assess the relationships of breastfeeding duration and MetS with different birth weight for GA. Results: The prevalence of non‐breastfeeding, 0–5, 6–12 and >12 months groups were 16.2%, 23.1%, 42.5% and 18.2%, and the prevalence of SGA and LGA was 11.9% and 12.7%, respectively. Prolonged breastfeeding duration was associated with higher odds of MetS (β: 0.08, 95% CI: 0.03, 0.13), WC (β: 3.49, 95% CI: 2.82, 4.16) and SBP (β: 2.34, 95% CI: 1.80, 2.89). SGA and prolonged breastfeeding synergistically increased MetS risks, but LGA appeared to offset the adverse effects of prolonged breastfeeding. Conclusion: Prolonged breastfeeding may increase children's MetS risks. SGA synergies with prolonged breastfeeding increased MetS burden in children and adolescents, while LGA mitigated the risks. Emerging scientific studies have supported the hypothesis that exposure to environmental chemicals increases the incidence of diverse human metabolic disorders. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the association between fluoride exposure and metabolic syndrome (MetS) prevalence in people from the Central Region of Mexico. This research included 575 adult individuals. Urinary fluoride concentrations were determined using a potentiometric method. Anthropometric measurements and blood pressure were also acquired. Serum fasting glucose and lipid levels were quantified. For the MetS screening, we used the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP ATP III) criteria. The mean urinary fluoride levels were 3.50 ± 2.50 mg/L. The prevalence of MetS was approximately 27 and 25% according to NCEP ATP III and IDF criteria, respectively. A multivariate logistic regression analysis showed significant associations (p < 0.05) between urinary fluoride concentrations and MetS occurrence using NCEP ATP III criteria (OR = 1.60; 95% CI 1.05–2.10) and IDF criteria (OR = 1.35; 95% CI 0.95–1.45). Aging is a multifaceted process impacting cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems of the body. Like other systems, aging affects both the adaptive and the innate components of the immune system, a phenomenon known as immunosenescence. The deregulation of the immune system puts elderly individuals at higher risk of infection, lower response to vaccines, and increased incidence of cancer. In the Western world, overnutrition has increased the incidence of obesity (linked with chronic inflammation) which increases the risk of metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. Aging is also associated with inflammaging a sterile chronic inflammation that predisposes individuals to age‐associated disease. Genetic manipulation of the nutrient‐sensing pathway, fasting, and calorie restriction (CR) has been shown to increase the lifespan of model organisms. As well in humans, fasting and CR have also been shown to improve different health parameters. Yet the direct effect of fasting and CR on the aging immune system needs to be further explored. Identifying the effect of fasting and CR on the immune system and how it modulates different parameters of immunosenescence could be important in designing pharmacological or nutritional interventions that slow or revert immunosenescence and strengthen the immune system of elderly individuals. Furthermore, clinical intervention can also be planned, by incorporating fasting or CR with medication, chemotherapy, and vaccination regimes. This review discusses age‐associated changes in the immune system and how these changes are modified by fasting and CR which add information on interventions that promote healthy aging and longevity in the growing aging population. Background/Objectives: Neck circumference (NC) has been proposed as a simple measurement to identify patients with overweight and obesity. It has been found that adipose tissue at the cervical level is associated with the presence of metabolic alterations. The aim of this study was to estimate the association between NC and indicators of Metabolic Syndrome (MS) to subsequently estimate its capacity to identify the risk of MS compared to waist circumference (WC) and Body Mass Index (BMI). Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out with a sample of 286 children 6–9 years old who attended six public primary schools in Jalisco, Mexico. Pearson's correlation coefficients along with sensitivity and specificity tests were performed to analyze the relationship between NC and MS indicators. Odds ratio (OR) and concordance analyses were performed considering the Kappa index. Results: NC showed statistically significant correlations with all MS indicators except for LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol. The cut-off points of NC to identify MS according to sex was >27.4 cm for girls and >29.8 cm for boys. The association of NC with values above the cutoff point and the presence of MS was OR: 21.6 (CI: 7.11–65.74). Conclusions: NC represents a simple and cost-effective alternative to identify children at risk of MS when compared to BMI and WC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To investigate the metabolomic mechanisms by which changes in cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) levels affect metabolic syndrome (MetS) risk factors and to provide a theoretical basis for the improvement of body metabolism via CRF in people with MetS risk factors, a comparative blood metabolomics study of individuals with varying levels of CRF and varying degrees of risk factors for MetS was conducted. Methods: Ninety subjects between the ages of 40 and 45 were enrolled, and they were categorized into low-MetS (LM ≤ two items) and high MetS (HM > three items) groups, as well as low- and high-CRF (LC, HC) and LCLM, LCLM, LCHM, and HCHM groups. Plasma was taken from the early morning abdominal venous blood. LC-MS was conducted using untargeted metabolomics technology, and the data were statistically and graphically evaluated using SPSS26.0 and R language. Results: (1) There were eight common differential metabolites in the HC vs. LC group as follows: methionine (↓), γ-aminobutyric acid (↑), 2-oxoglutatic acid (↑), arginine (↑), serine (↑), cis-aconitic acid (↑), glutamine (↓), and valine (↓); the HM vs. LM group are contrast. (2) In the HCHM vs. LCLM group, trends were observed in 2-oxoglutatic acid (↑), arginine (↑), serine (↑), cis-aconitic acid (↑), glutamine (↓), and valine (↓). (3) CRF and MetS risk factors jointly affect biological metabolic pathways such as arginine biosynthesis, TCA cycle, cysteine and methionine metabolism, glycine, serine, and threonine metabolism, arginine and proline metabolism, and alanine, aspartate, and glutamate metabolism. Conclusion: The eight common differential metabolites can serve as potential biomarkers for distinguishing individuals with different CRF levels and varying degrees of MetS risk factors. Oestradiol withdrawal at menopause predisposes women to metabolic syndrome, a cluster of interrelated conditions including obesity, insulin resistance, dyslipidaemia and hypertension that together confer an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. Hormone replacement therapies are commonly used to treat acute symptoms of the perimenopausal period, and whilst they have been associated with metabolic improvements in many studies, long-term use is considered unviable. Novel approaches are required to mitigate the risk of postmenopausal metabolic syndrome. In 2012, the exercise-inducible myokine irisin was isolated from the skeletal muscle of mice and identified to have anti-obesity and antidiabetic effects in vivo. Irisin is now recognised to exert pleiotropic action on cognitive, bone and metabolic health. There is accumulating evidence from in vitro and in vivo rodent studies that irisin can mitigate each component condition of metabolic syndrome. In postmenopausal women, independent associations have been observed between (a) exercise and plasma irisin concentration and (b) plasma irisin concentration and reduced incidence of metabolic syndrome. To date, however, no study has considered the mechanistic basis by which irisin, whether exercise-induced or exogenously administered, could reduce the incidence or severity of metabolic syndrome in postmenopausal women. This review aims to analyse the literature concerning the metabolic actions of irisin, with a focus on its therapeutic potential for metabolic syndrome driven by a state of oestradiol depletion. It evaluates the practicality of exercise as a therapy and discusses other irisin-based therapeutic strategies that may alleviate postmenopausal metabolic syndrome. Finally, it highlights areas where future research is required to advance knowledge of irisin’s biological action such that it could be considered a viable candidate for clinical application. It is uncertain whether the effects of health counselling programs differ depending on their intensity. This study compared the effectiveness of intensive health guidance (IHG) and less intensive motivation-enhancing guidance (MEG) on cardiovascular risk factors. A regression discontinuity design (RDD) was applied. In Japan's specific health checkup (SHC) and guidance program, those with a high risk of metabolic syndrome are assigned to IHG or MEG. An RDD was applied using an SHC results database. Four groups were created in which IHG or MEG assignment was solely determined by single cut-off values of the running variables of triglycerides (TGs), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), fasting blood glucose (FBG), or haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) measured during SHC. Outcomes were one year's changes in body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WCF), systolic and diastolic blood pressure, HDL-C, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, FBG, and HbA1c. A total of 541,809 observations among 225,115 people from 2008 to 2017 were analysed. Men assigned to IHG had a significantly but slightly lower BMI and WCF than those assigned to MEG the next year, only when TG or FBG was a running variable. There were no significant differences between IHG and MEG for women's BMI and WCF and other cardiovascular risk factors for both sexes. Since IHG has limited additional effects on cardiovascular risk factors compared with MEG, abolishing IHG may have little negative impact on the general public's health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study explored whether household and outdoor air pollution is associated with a greater risk for metabolic syndrome (MetS) among women. In all 11,860 women who cooked with clean energy were included in the analysis. Cooking frequency, range hood use during cooking, passive smoking exposure, and solid fuel use for heating were used to represent household air pollution. The 2-year average concentration of PM2.5, and face mask usage were used to reflect outdoor air pollution exposure. An index of air pollution exposure was also constructed. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to estimate the association between air pollution and risk for MetS, and a positive correlation was found. Our results indicated that household cooking used clean energy and exposure to a high level of outdoor PM2.5 without face mask usage may contribute to an increased risk for MetS among women. Introduction: Two large neutral amino acids (LNAA), tryptophan and tyrosine, are precursors to cerebral neurotransmitters and are involved in cognitive function. Higher levels of LNAA in young adults are associated with improved cognition, although these associations appear to reverse over time. Given that exposure to metabolic syndrome (MetS) may induce premature cognitive aging, the current project aims to fill the gap in the literature by examining the effect of LNAA on cognitive performance in midlife adults with metabolic risks. Methods: Eighty-eight adults, ages 40–61 years, participated in this cross-sectional study. LNAA metabolites were quantified, MetS components were measured using high-performance liquid chromatography, and MetS components were assessed in the laboratory. Composite verbal memory and executive functioning scores were computed using principal component analysis. We used linear regression models to test the interaction between LNAA and MetS while covarying for sex, age, and education. Results: The kynurenine/tryptophan ratio moderated the relation between MetS and verbal memory, even after adjusting for relevant covariates. Tyrosine metabolites were not significant moderators of the association between MetS and executive functioning. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that the detected weaker memory performance in adults with a high number of MetS components may be related to relative tryptophan depletion and possible decreases in serotonin production. Background: This study was conducted to assess the prospective association between dietary polyphenols intakes and risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components. Methods: Participants in this study (n = 4559) were selected from among the adults of the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (TLGS) with an average follow-up of 5.9 + 2.5 years. Biochemical and anthropometric variables were measured at baseline and follow-up examinations. A reliable and valid semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire was used to evaluate dietary intakes. The incidence of MetS and its components in relation to polyphenols and its subclasses (phenolic acids, flavonoids, lignans, and stilbenes) was evaluated using multivariable Cox proportional hazard regression models. Results: Of the 4559 subjects who enrolled in the present study, 1765 were male aged 38.6 + 14.2 y and 2794 were female aged 35.9 + 11.7 y. The hazard ratios of MetS were 25% lower in Q2 (HR, 95% CI: 0.75, 0.64-0.88), 22% lower in Q3 (HR, 95% CI: 0.78, 0.65-0.94) and 24% lower in Q4 (HR, 95% CI: 0.76, 0.61-0.95) in comparison to Q1, whereas the results for subclasses of polyphenol were non-significant. The risk of high blood pressure (BP) reduced from quartiles 1 to 4 for phenolic acid (HR: 1.00, 0.88, 0.79, 0.80, Ptrend = 0.03). The risk of low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) increased across quartiles of phenolic acid (HR: 1.00, 1.22, 1.07, 1.30, Ptrend = 0.02). Conclusion: This study highlights the potential protective role of total dietary polyphenols in the prevention of MetS. These findings could be the starting point of upcoming trials to illuminate the optimal level of polyphenols deriving from the intake of polyphenolrich diets to prevent MetS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• Metabolic syndrome (MetS), a major global problem, predisposes to both T2DM and ASCVD. • There is a paucity of data on the TG-glucose (TyG) index in the US population,despite it being a very reliable marker of insulin resistance in other countries. • We compared the TyG index to HOMA-IR as a discriminant of MetS in the US population (NHANES data). • It is a superior predictor of MetS than HOMA-IR in the US population and is more cost-effective. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of cardio-metabolic features portending an increased risk for both type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) is a widely used surrogate measure of insulin resistance. The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index is another validated measure of insulin resistance that predicts both diabetes and cardiovascular disease in low and medium-income countries, but only diabetes in high income countries. Due to the paucity of data on the TyG index in the US population, we compared the validity of the TyG index and HOMA-IR in predicting MetS. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2005 and 2018 on Non-Hispanic White (NHW), Hispanic American (HA), and African American (AA) individuals (n = 5380) aged 20–80 years were used for analysis. Individuals were classified as having MetS based on three or more of its components. HOMA-IR and the TyG index were determined from fasting samples. Both the TyG index and HOMA-IR were significantly increased in MetS and increased significantly with increasing severity of the syndrome. Also both indices correlated significantly with all 5 features of MetS, hsCRP and non-HDL-C. ROC-AUC analysis for TyG index was significantly greater than that of HOMA-IR in predicting MetS: 0.87 (95 % CI 0.85–0.88) versus 0.82 (95 % CI 0.81–0.83) respectively, p < 0.0001. This was not evident for the small AA subgroup. The TyG index outperformed HOMA-IR in predicting MetS, a proxy for both T2DM and ASCVD, in a general US population and is a valuable biomarker. Objective: The present study aims to describe the relationship of obesity with metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance in obese patients. Methodology: The present study is a bibliographic review that seeks to study articles on the biochemistry of obesity and insulin resistance. 18,955 PUBMED databases and Virtual Health Library of the Ministry of Health were consulted with the following filters: randomized study articles and epidemiological review articles. Articles written in English published between 2006 and 2023 were used in the research. RESULTS: Longitudinal research of literature review points out that obesity develops an inflammatory process of dysfunctional adipocytes where cytokines ampha and macrophages are triggered causing an accumulation of systemic fatty acids in the body’s tissues such as: liver and muscle pancreas generating lipotoxicity and one one Systemic inflammation that prevents adequate insulin signaling. Metabolic syndrome was diagnosed in 45.5% of obese patients and insulin resistance at 29.1%. Insulin resistance had an association with HDL-cholesterol (p = 0.032) and with metabolic syndrome (p = 0.006). The body composition indicators were correlated with insulin resistance (p <0.01). The values of 23.5 and 36.3% above the IMC reference point allowed to identify insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome in patients. Conclusion: The present study sought to review the literature on the relationship of obesity, biochemistry and insulin resistance. Studies indicate that 45.5% of obsessed patients have metabolic diseases arising from obesity such as insulin resistance, tissue lipotoxicity and diabetes, which occur due to the inflammatory process of anfalpha cytokines in adipose tissue dysfunctional obese patients leading to a significant loss of the patient’s quality of life. Background: Limited studies have investigated the relationship between Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) and metabolic syndrome (MetS), yielding inconclusive results. This study aimed to examine the relationship between AMH levels and MetS and its components in women from a general population. Methods: This prospective study recruited 769 women. Generalized Estimating Equation (GEE) models analyzed longitudinal trends of MetS components. Cox proportional hazard models evaluated effect of age-specific AMH tertiles on MetS occurrence, adjusting for confounders. Results: The GEE analysis indicated that women in the third tertile exhibited higher mean FPG compared to those in the first tertile of age-specific AMH (3 mg/dL; 95% CI: 0.40, 5.60; P = 0.024); however, this association became non-significant after adjustment. Notably, the second tertile showed a significant decrease in FPG mean changes over time (-0.69 mg/dL; 95% CI: -1.31, -0.07; P Interaction = 0.030). Women in the second and third tertiles of age-specific AMH demonstrated lower mean HDL-C compared to the first tertile (-2.96 mg/dL; 95% CI: -4.67, -1.26; P < 0.001 and -2.63 mg/dL; 95% CI: -4.31, -0.96; P = 0.002, respectively). The association between HDL-C changes and the second tertile remained significant after adjustment (-1.91 mg/dL; 95% CI: -3.68, -0.14; P = 0.034). No significant associations were observed between age-specific AMH tertiles and TG and SBP/DBP. Cox models revealed no significant differences in the hazard ratio of MetS between AMH tertiles after adjusting for confounders. Obesity is an important characteristic manifestation of metabolic syndrome (MetS), and body roundness index (BRI) is one of the anthropometric indicators associated with obesity. However, studies on the relationship between BRI and MetS risk are limited. We aimed to explore the relationship between baseline BRI and MetS in the USA population. Our study used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 1999 to 2018, ultimately enrolling and analysing 47 303 participants. Data-driven tertiles were used to categorise BRI levels, and multivariate logistic regression models were fitted to investigate the association of BRI with MetS in adults. In addition, receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was used to assess the ability of BRI to predict MetS. The distribution of BRI was different across ethnic groups with a gradual decrease in the proportion of non-Hispanic Whites and other races. In addition, BRI was significantly associated with traditional cardiovascular risk factors. Univariate regression analysis indicated BRI to be a moderate risk factor for MetS, and multivariate logistic regression analysis found that BRI remained an independent risk factor for MetS. After adjusting for confounding variables, a non-linear relationship was found between BRI levels and the prevalence of MetS. More importantly, BRI predicted MetS with the largest AUC among anthropometric measures. In summary, elevated baseline BRI levels are independently associated with the development of MetS, and baseline BRI may assist in identifying patients at risk for MetS, leading to early and optimal treatment to improve their outcomes. Background: The study aimed to explore the relationship between low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) genetic variants and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and its complications, including cardiovascular diseases (CVD), insulin resistance (IR), and metabolic syndrome (MS). Method: 4329 individuals with suspected OSA who underwent a comprehensive assessment of anthropometric, biochemical, and polysomnography (PSG) data, along with 30 LDL-C single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were enrolled. The 10-year Framingham CVD risk score (FRS), IR and MS were evaluated for each subject. Linear regression and logistic regression were utilized to examine the correlations among these variables. Results: After the Benjamini-Hochberg correction, linear regression results indicated positive correlations between variants rs3741297 and rs629301 with FRS (β = 0.031, PBH=0.002; β = 0.026, PBH=0.015). Logistic regression revealed that rs3741297 increased MS risk among total subjects [OR = 1.67 (95% CI:1.369–2.038), PBH=1.32 × 10− 5] and increased IR risk in females [OR = 3.475 (95% CI:1.653–7.307), PBH=0.03]. In males, rs2642438 decreased MS risk [OR = 0.81 (95% CI:0.703–0.933), PBH=0.045]. Conclusions: The rs3741297 variant correlated with susceptibility to CVD, IR, and MS in the OSA population. Neuropsychiatric disorders significantly contribute to the global burden of disease, often associated with multiple health issues such as obesity, diabetes, liver disease, and metabolic syndrome risk factors. Although multifactorial causes underlie neuropsychiatric disorders, recent research has revealed a significant correlation between diet, metabolism, and neuropsychiatric diseases such as schizophrenia, anxiety, and depression. Psychotropic medication is the primary treatment for schizophrenia spectrum disorders, but its effectiveness can vary from patient to patient and may cause severe adverse reactions. Treatment and management of neuropsychiatric disorders should include not only medication therapy but also nutritional interventions and lifestyle changes. An integrated approach, which includes assessing and correcting nutritional deficiencies and promoting healthy eating habits, could improve treatment outcomes and the quality of life for patients. The primary objective of this study was to examine the association between food security status and metabolic syndrome (MetS) using a nationally representative dataset. We hypothesized that food insecurity would be associated with an increased odds of having MetS. This was a cross-sectional analysis of data from the 2005–2006 to 2015–2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data collection cycles. Food security was measured using the US Food Security Survey Module. Presence of MetS was determined using the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III criteria. The association between food insecurity and MetS was examined using logistic regression models stratified by sex and adjusted for poverty to income ratio, age, race, marital status, educational attainment, smoking status, and body mass index. After adjusting for covariates, men with marginal (odds ratio, 1.64; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.22–2.20) and low (odds ratio, 1.33; 95% CI, 1.02–1.73) food security had a higher odds of having MetS than men with full food security; however, this association was lost among men with very low food security. For women, very low food security was associated with a 1.61 times greater odds of having MetS (95% CI, 1.16–2.25). These results suggest that food insecurity is generally associated with an increased prevalence of MetS for women, but not necessarily for men. These findings highlight the need to address rising food insecurity rates, while also highlighting the need for further research to fully elucidate the role of gender and sex in food insecurity and chronic disease. The progress in research on the physiology of the cardiovascular system made in the last 100 years allowed for the development of the pathogenesis not only of secondary forms of hypertension but also of primary hypertension. The main determinants of blood pressure are described by the relationship between stroke volume, heart rate, peripheral resistance, and arterial stiffness. The theories developed by Guyton and Folkow describe the importance of the volume factor and total peripheral resistance. However, none of them fully presents the pathogenesis of essential hypertension. The multifactorial model of primary hypertension pathogenesis developed by Irving Page in the 1940s, called Page's mosaic, covers most of the pathophysiological phenomena observed in essential hypertension. The most important pathophysiological phenomena included in Page's mosaic form a network of interconnected "nodes". New discoveries both from experimental and clinical studies made in recent decades have allowed the original Page mosaic to be modified and the addition of new pathophysiological nodes. Most of the clinical studies confirming the validity of the multifactorial pathogenesis of primary hypertension concern adults. However, hypertension develops in childhood and is even perinatally programmed. Therefore, the next nodes in Page's mosaic should be age and perinatal factors. Aims: This study compared the prevalences of metabolic syndrome and of cardiac or kidney comorbidities among patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) associated with metabolic dysfunction-related fatty liver disease (MAFLD), chronic infection with hepatitis B or C virus (HBV or HCV), or the combination of MAFLD and chronic HBV infection. Methods: Medical records were retrospectively analyzed for patients with HCC who underwent hepatectomy between March 2013 and March 2023. Patients with HCC of different etiologies were compared in terms of their clinicodemographic characteristics and laboratory data before surgery. Results: Of the 2422 patients, 1,822 (75.2%) were chronically infected with HBV without MAFLD and HCV, 415 (17.2%) had concurrent MAFLD and chronic HBV infection but no HCV infection, 121 (5.0%) had MAFLD without hepatitis virus infection, and 64 (2.6%) were chronically infected with HCV in the presence or absence of MAFLD and HBV infection. Compared to patients chronically infected with HBV without MAFLD and HCV, those with MAFLD but no hepatitis virus infection showed significantly lower prevalence of cirrhosis, ascites, portal hypertension, alpha-fetoprotein concentration ≥ 400 ng/mL, tumor size > 5 cm, multinodular tumors and microvascular invasion. Conversely, they showed significantly higher prevalence of metabolic syndrome, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, abdominal obesity, history of cardiovascular disease, T-wave alterations, hypertriglyceridemia and hyperuricemia, as well as higher risk of arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Compared to patients with MAFLD but no hepatitis virus infection, those with concurrent MAFLD and chronic infection with HBV showed significantly higher prevalence of cirrhosis, ascites and portal hypertension, but significantly lower prevalence of hypertension and history of cardiovascular disease. Compared to patients with other etiologies, those chronically infected with HCV in the presence or absence of MAFLD and HBV infection, showed significantly higher prevalence of cirrhosis, portal hypertension, ascites, and esophagogastric varices. Conclusion: Patients with HCC associated with MAFLD tend to have a background of less severe liver disease than those with HCC of other etiologies, but they may be more likely to suffer metabolic syndrome or comorbidities affecting the heart or kidneys. Introduction: The incidence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in people living with HIV is significantly higher than in people without HIV. MetS is not only a major driver of cardiovascular disease (CVD) but is also closely related to the development of chronic kidney disease (CKD). The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of and risk factors for MetS and to further understand the degree of damage to target organs. Methods: This was a cross‐sectional descriptive study conducted at Chongqing Public Health Medical Center, China. Information was collected via questionnaire survey, physical examination, and laboratory tests. We used the China Diabetes Society guidelines to define MetS. Pooled cohort equations were calculated to compare CVD risk in the next 10 years in people living with HIV aged ≥40 years with or without MetS. We used Student's t‐test, the chi‐squared test, Fisher's exact test, binary logistic regression, and multiple linear regression in the statistical analysis. Results: The study included 979 people living with HIV, including 13 who have experienced CVD, receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART). The median age was 43.0 years, 20.9% were female, and the median ART time was 45.0 months. The prevalence of MetS was 33.9%. The components of MetS criteria were hyperglycaemia (50.4%), hypertriglyceridaemia (48.4%), hypertension (46.8%), low concentrations of high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (28.2%), and abdominal obesity (25.0%). Higher body mass index (odds ratio [OR] 1.266; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.203–1.333), higher total cholesterol (OR 1.267; 95% CI 1.011–1.588), high alcohol consumption (OR 1.973; 95% CI 1.009–3.859), and family history of diabetes (OR 1.726; 95% CI 1.075–2.770) were independent risk factors for MetS. Compared with the non‐MetS group, the MetS group had a higher rate of urine albumin (23.8% vs 14.8%, p = 0.001), and the estimated glomerular filtration rate <90 mL/min/1.73 m2 (18.37% vs. 12.8%, p = 0.020) and β2‐microglobin (p = 0.004) increased more markedly in the MetS group. Regarding the risk of developing CVD events in the next 10 years, 38.5% of those in the MetS group were at high or very high risk, which was significantly higher than in the non‐MetS group (p < 0.001). In addition, age (p < 0.001) and sex (p = 0.002) are independent risk factors for developing CVD events in the next 10 years. Conclusions: The prevalence of MetS in people living with HIV on ART is high in Chongqing, China. Risk factors for the development of MetS are high alcohol consumption, family history of diabetes, higher body mass index, and higher total cholesterol levels. Neurocognitive impairment and metabolic syndrome (MetS) are prevalent in persons with HIV (PWH). We examined disparities in HIV-associated neurocognitive function between Hispanic and non-Hispanic White older PWH, and the role of MetS in explaining these disparities. Participants included 116 community-dwelling PWH aged 50–75 years enrolled in a cohort study in southern California [58 Hispanic (53% Spanish speaking) and 58 age-comparable non-Hispanic White; overall group: age: M = 57.9, standard deviation (SD) = 5.7; education (years): M = 13, SD = 3.4; 83% male, 58% AIDS, 94% on antiretroviral therapy]. Global neurocognition was derived from T-scores adjusted for demographics (age, education, sex, ethnicity, language) on a battery of 10 cognitive tests. MetS was ascertained via standard criteria that considered central obesity, and fasting elevated triglycerides, low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and elevated glucose, or medical treatment for these conditions. Covariates examined included sociodemographic, psychiatric, substance use and HIV disease characteristics. Compared with non-Hispanic Whites, Hispanics showed worse global neurocognitive function (Cohen's d = 0.56, p < 0.05) and had higher rates of MetS (38% vs. 56%, p < 0.05). A stepwise regression model including ethnicity and significant covariates showed Hispanic ethnicity was the sole significant predictor of worse global neurocognition (B = −3.82, SE = 1.27, p < 0.01). A model also including MetS showed that both Hispanic ethnicity (B = −3.39, SE = 1.31, p = 0.01) and MetS (B = −2.73, SE = 1.31, p = 0.04) were independently associated with worse neurocognition. In conclusion, findings indicate that increased MetS is associated with worse neurocognitive function in both Hispanic and non-Hispanic White older PWH, but does not explain neurocognitive disparities. Background and Hypothesis People with first-episode psychosis (FEP) in low- and lower-middle-income countries (LMIC) experience delays in receiving treatment, resulting in poorer outcomes and higher mortality. There is robust evidence for effective and cost-effective early intervention in psychosis (EIP) services for FEP, but the evidence for EIP in LMIC has not been reviewed. We aim to review the evidence on early intervention for the management of FEP in LMIC. Study Design We searched 4 electronic databases (Medline, Embase, PsycINFO, and CINAHL) to identify studies describing EIP services and interventions to treat FEP in LMIC published from 1980 onward. The bibliography of relevant articles was hand-searched. Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed. Study Results The search strategy produced 5074 records; we included 18 studies with 2294 participants from 6 LMIC countries. Thirteen studies (1553 participants) described different approaches for EIP. Pharmacological intervention studies (n  = 4; 433 participants) found a high prevalence of metabolic syndrome among FEP receiving antipsychotics (P  ≤ .005). One study found a better quality of life in patients using injectables compared to oral antipsychotics (P  = .023). Among the non-pharmacological interventions (n  = 3; 308 participants), SMS reminders improved treatment engagement (OR = 1.80, CI = 1.02–3.19). The methodological quality of studies evidence was relatively low. Conclusions The limited evidence showed that EIP can be provided in LMIC with adaptations for cultural factors and limited resources. Adaptations included collaboration with traditional healers, involving nonspecialist healthcare professionals, using mobile technology, considering the optimum use of long-acting antipsychotics, and monitoring antipsychotic side effects. Background: Metabolic syndrome is a serious condition associated with multiple diseases. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome is increasing caused by an increase in obesity rates among children and adolescents. Current Concepts: Owing to the various definitions used, there is lack of consensus regarding the diagnostic criteria for metabolic syndrome in children and adolescents. Although the exact pathogenesis remains unclear, insulin resistance and subsequent inflammation are key mechanistic contributors. Metabolic syndrome is characterized by overweight and obesity accompanied by abnormalities in glucose metabolism, dyslipidemia, and hypertension and is associated with other conditions such as fatty liver, polycystic ovary syndrome, and a pro-inflammatory state. Prevention and management of metabolic syndrome can be achieved through lifestyle modifications, behavioral interventions, pharmacotherapy, and surgical interventions. Discussion and Conclusion: Childhood and adolescent obesity serves as a risk factor for metabolic syndrome during later life. Early identification and intervention are important to prevent the progression of metabolic syndrome. Background: The World Health Organization and United Nations Children's Fund recommend exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) for the first six months of an infant's life. Although evidence suggests that maintaining breastfeeding has positive impacts on glucose and lipid metabolism in postpartum women with a history of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), no study has investigated whether such effects differ between breastfeeding intensities. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of maintaining breastfeeding on prediabetes, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and metabolic syndrome (MetS) six months postpartum in women with GDM. This study also examined the potential variations in glucometabolic outcomes between EBF at six months and partial breastfeeding at six months. Methods: This prospective cohort study included 130 women with recent GDM who experienced live births between 7 September 2020 and 31 January 2023 at a university hospital in Bangkok, Thailand. All the women were free of T2DM and MetS at baseline (six weeks postpartum). We followed up these women six months postpartum to assess their breastfeeding practices (EBF at six months, partial breastfeeding at six months, or not maintaining breastfeeding) and evaluate their progression to prediabetes, T2DM, and MetS. Maintaining breastfeeding was defined as breastfeeding for six months. EBF was determined using the "recall since birth" method. Results: Of the 130 participants included, the rates of prediabetes, T2DM, and MetS six months postpartum were 33% (n = 43), 2% (n = 3), and 17% (n = 22), respectively. In the unadjusted model, maintaining breastfeeding was associated with a reduction in the risks of prediabetes and MetS but not T2DM. After adjusting for potential confounders, maintaining breastfeeding was a significant protective factor only for prediabetes. The adjusted risk ratios and 95% confidence intervals were 0.54 (0.29, 0.99) for prediabetes and 0.47 (0.19, 1.06) for MetS. When EBF at six months and partial breastfeeding at six months were separately analyzed, the risks of prediabetes and MetS differed between the two groups. In the EBF at six months-to-partial breastfeeding at six months comparison, the adjusted risk ratios (95% confidence intervals) of prediabetes and MetS were 0.46 (0.22, 0.97) vs. 0.79 (0.25, 2.49) and 0.34 (0.11, 0.99) vs. 0.69 (0.22, 2.07), respectively. Conclusions: Maintaining breastfeeding reduced the risk of prediabetes and MetS, but not of T2DM, six months postpartum; these effects were significant only with EBF. These findings indicate that supporting maternal efforts to practice EBF for six months may improve women's health after GDM. Background: Consumption of dietary fiber has been suggested as an important aspect of a healthy diet to reduce the risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS), including cardiovascular disease. The role of fiber intake in MetS might differ by individual genetic susceptibility. APOA5 encodes a regulator of plasma triglyceride levels, which impacts the related mechanisms of MetS. This study investigated the association between dietary fiber and the risk of MetS, assessing their associations according to APOA5 genetic variants. Methods: A total of 1985 participants aged 30–55 years were included from a cross-sectional study based on the Korean Medicine Daejeon Citizen Cohort study at baseline (2017–2019). Dietary fiber intake was measured using a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire. The APOA5 polymorphisms (rs2266788 A > G, rs662799 A > G, and rs651821 T > C) were genotyped using the Asia Precision Medicine Research Array. Logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs). Results: A higher consumption of dietary fiber was associated with a lower prevalence of MetS (P = 0.025). Among the components of MetS, an inverse association with dietary fiber was observed in increased waist circumference (OR, 95% CI = 0.60, 0.41–0.88, P for trend = 0.009) and elevated triglycerides (OR, 95% CI = 0.69, 0.50–0.96, P for trend = 0.012). Regarding the interaction with APOA5 genetic variants, a stronger association with dietary fiber intake was shown in G allele carriers of rs662799 than in A/A carriers (OR, 95% CI = 2.34, 1.59–3.44, P for interaction = 0.024) and in C allele carriers of rs651821 than in T/T carriers (OR, 95% CI = 2.35, 1.59–3.46, P for interaction = 0.027). Conclusions: The findings of this study suggest that the benefits of dietary fiber on the risk of MetS could be modified by genetic variants of the APOA5 gene, providing a more effective strategy for preventing MetS. Purpose: Studies evaluating food insecurity and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and significant hepatic fibrosis are currently scarce. We evaluated the characteristics of food insecure individuals and whether food insecurity was associated with MASLD and significant hepatic fibrosis in the US population. Methods: In this cross-sectional study from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2017–2018, 3441 participants with complete data were enrolled. We defined MASLD and significant hepatic fibrosis (≥ F2) by transient elastography in the absence of other causes of liver disease. The detailed questionnaire assessed and categorized food security as high, marginal, low, and very low food security. Results: Food-insecure subjects were more likely to be female, younger, more impoverished, non-Hispanic blacks, Hispanics, and less likely to be educated, married, and physically active. Food insecurity increased the odds of the prevalence of MASLD by 42% (odds ratio [OR]: 1.42, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.12–1.78) after adjustment for demographic, lifestyle, and metabolic risk factors. The addition of diabetes and obesity did not change this association (OR: 1.36, 95% CI: 1.03–1.78). The multivariable model showed an independent relationship between food insecurity and significant hepatic fibrosis (OR: 1.40, 95% CI: 1.04–1.88) after adjustment for demographic, lifestyle, and metabolic risk factors, although the association was attenuated and changed insignificantly after adjustment for diabetes and obesity. Conclusions: Food insecurity was associated with higher odds for MASLD. Objective To examine the association of CRF and adiposity with cardiometabolic risk factors and metabolic syndrome among emerging adults. Participants: 5681 (60.1% Men; 21 ± 1years) college students from a large university located in the northeast of the United States. Methods: Participants completed an objective health assessment that involved the assessment cardiometabolic risk factors, CRF, and adiposity. Data of 5681 students' (60.1% Men; 21 ± 1years) who had CRF, adiposity, all risk factors necessary to determine metabolic syndrome evaluated were analyzed using logistic regression analyses. Results: Poor CRF and elevated adiposity were associated with cardiometabolic risk factors and metabolic syndrome regardless of sex, with the association between adiposity and risk factors found to be stronger compared to CRF. Conclusions: Targeted and tailored screening and interventions are urgently needed to reduce adiposity and increase CRF to avoid serious short and long-term negative health outcomes in this population. The current quasi-experimental study explored the effects of Baduanjin qigong on body mass index (BMI) and five metabolic indexes in people with schizophrenia. Inclusion criteria were body mass index >25 kg/m2 or metabolic syndrome. Twenty-two service users were recruited from a psychiatric center and were assigned to the experimental group (EG) or control group (CG) using blocked randomization. The EG performed Baduanjin qigong lasting 1 hour for 12 weeks three times per week, whereas the CG received routine care. Generalized estimating equations showed that the EG achieved a greater decrease in BMI and waist circumference (WC) than the CG post-intervention. Baduanjin qigong may provide an effective nonpharmacological approach to reducing BMI and WC in people with schizophrenia. This study showed that performing Baduanjin qigong for 12 weeks is a feasible and effective strategy for improving the body shape of individuals with chronic schizophrenia, thus providing results that can serve as a reference for health professionals working in psychiatry departments. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between leptin and adiponectin gene polymorphisms, circulating levels of leptin and adiponectin, adiposity and clinical markers in patients with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). This cross-sectional study was conducted with 102 adults and elderly MDS patients and 102 age- and sex-matched controls. Clinical characteristics, co-morbidities, anthropometric data, laboratory evaluation and genetic analysis (polymorphisms −2548G > A/rs7799039 of the LEP gene and +276G > T/rs1501299 of the ADIPOQ gene) were investigated. Serum leptin was higher and adiponectin lower in MDS when compared with controls. There was a significant positive correlation between serum leptin levels and BMI (r = 0·264, P = 0·025), waist circumference (r = 0·235, P = 0·047), body fat percentage (BF %) (r = 0·373, P = 0·001) and the fat mass index (FMI) (r = 0·371, P < 0·001). A lower mean adiponectin was found among patients with high BF %, higher visceral adiposity index and metabolic syndrome. A significant association was found between the AA genotype (mutant) of the LEP polymorphism rs7799039 and male sex and blast excess (≥ 5 %). In addition, a significant association was observed between the TT genotype (mutant) of the ADIPOQ rs1501299 polymorphism and Fe overload. These results demonstrate the importance of a comprehensive and systematic evaluation in patients with MDS in order to identify and control negative factors not related to the disease at an early stage. Background: Accumulating evidence has suggested that dietary polyphenols may be protective against metabolic syndrome (MetS); however, the available evidence is contradictory. The aim of this meta-analysis was to assess the association between dietary intake of polyphenols and the odds of MetS. Methods: The PubMed and Scopus databases were systematically searched to obtain eligible studies. The risk of MetS for the highest versus the lowest intakes of total, subclasses and individual polyphenols were examined by pooling odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) using the random effects model. Results: A total of 14 studies (6 cohort and 8 cross-sectional studies) involving a total of 50,366 participants with 10,879 cases of MetS were included. When various polyphenol compounds were pooled, they were significantly related to a 22% decreased odds of MetS (([5 studies]; OR: 0.78; 95%CI: 0.72–0.85). Higher intakes of total flavonoids (([9 studies]; OR: 0.78; 95%CI: 0.72–0.85), flavan-3-ols (([2 studies]; OR: 0.64; 95%CI: 0.43–0.94), isoflavones (([3 studies]; OR: 0.84; 95%CI: 0.75–0.93), stilbenes (([4 studies]; OR: 0.86; 95%CI: 0.76–0.97), flavones (([2 studies]; OR: 0.79; 95%CI: 0.71–0.89), and quercetin (([2 studies]; OR: 0.63; 95%CI: 0.43–0.93) were also significantly associated with a decreased risk of MetS. The associations were not modified by the age of the participants. No association was found for total polyphenols, phenolic acids, lignans, anthocyanins, and flavonols. Background: Obesity in adults without Down syndrome is associated with an adverse metabolic profile including high prevalence of pre‐diabetes and diabetes, high levels of insulin, non‐high‐density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, leptin and high‐sensitivity C‐reactive protein (hsCRP) and low levels of HDL and adiponectin. We examined whether obesity in middle‐aged adults with Down syndrome is also related to an adverse metabolic profile. Methods: This cross‐sectional study included 143 adults with Down syndrome, with a mean age of 55.7 ± 5.7 years and 52.5% women. Body mass index (BMI) was classified as underweight (BMI < 18.5 kg/m2), normal (BMI 18.5–24.9 kg/m2), overweight (BMI 25–29.9 kg/m2) and obese (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2). Diabetes was ascertained by history or by haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) as normal glucose tolerance (HbA1c < 5.7%), pre‐diabetes (HbA1c 5.7–6.4%) and diabetes (HbA1c ≥ 6.5%). We measured non‐fasting lipids, hsCRP, insulin, adiponectin and leptin. Results: The majority of the sample had an overweight (46.9%) or obesity (27.3%) status. However, there was a relatively low prevalence of pre‐diabetes (9.8%) and diabetes (6.9%). Overweight and obesity status were not associated with lower HDL and adiponectin and higher insulin, non‐HDL cholesterol and hsCRP as expected in adults without Down syndrome. However, overweight and obesity were strongly associated with higher leptin (P < 0.001). Conclusions: The only metabolic correlate of obesity in middle‐aged adults with Down syndrome was high leptin levels. Our findings are limited by non‐fasting laboratory tests but suggest that middle‐aged adults with Down syndrome do not have the adverse metabolic profile related to obesity found in adults without Down syndrome. Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) is a risk for developing cardiovascular diseases and its prevalence is especially high in psychiatric patients. To date, there is limited data from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on the prevalence of MetS. Therefore, we aimed to investigate its prevalence and possible risk factors in a large sample of psychiatric patients in the UAE. A cross-sectional study was conducted at Al-Ain Hospital, in Al-Ain City, UAE. We collected demographic and clinical data on patients diagnosed with schizophrenia, schizoaffective, and bipolar affective disorder in the period between January 2017 and December 2020. This included their secondary diagnosis (psychiatric or medical), vital signs (heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, Body Mass Index [BMI]), metabolic parameters (fasting blood glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein, high-density lipoproteins), and prescribed medications. We used the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology (AACE) criteria to diagnose MetS. We included 889 subjects and of these, 79.8% (N = 709) had a BMI ≥25 kg/m2 and 9.8% (N = 87) had no abnormal metabolic parameters. Overall, 28.1% (N = 250) had MetS with no statistical difference between the three groups. Fasting blood glucose levels and abnormally elevated triglycerides were significant predictors for MetS. Our study found that around one in three patients had MetS irrespective of the three diagnoses. Some variables were significant predictors for MetS. Our findings were consistent with other studies and warrant the need for regular screening and management of abnormal metabolic parameters. There is no statistical difference between schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and bipolar disorder with regards to the prevalence of metabolic syndrome. Across the globe, metabolic syndrome, hyperuric acid, and their related diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and insulin resistance, are increasing in incidence due to metabolic imbalances. Due to the pathogenesis, women are more prone to these diseases than men. As estrogen levels decrease after menopause, obesity and metabolic disorders are more likely to occur. Men are also affected by hyperuric acid. To provide ideas for the prevention and treatment of metabolic syndrome and hyperuricemia, this article reviews and analyzes the relationship between estrogen receptors, metabolic syndrome, and hyperuricemia. Background Weight gain following initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART) is common. We assessed the impact of changes in weight in the year following ART initiation with subsequent cardiometabolic disease among AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG) participants. Methods Linear regression models were fit to examine the association between change in weight/waist circumference (WC) in weeks 0–48 and change in metabolic parameters in weeks 0–48 and 48–96. Cox proportional hazard models were fit to examine the association between changes in weight/WC in weeks 0–48 and diabetes mellitus (DM), metabolic syndrome, or cardiometabolic and cardiovascular events after week 48. Results Participants (N = 2624) were primarily male (81%) and non-White (60%). Mean weight gain from 0–48 weeks was 3.6 kg (SD 7.3); 130 participants developed DM; 360 metabolic syndrome; 424 any cardiometabolic event; 28 any cardiovascular event, over 480 weeks of follow-up. In adjusted models, total cholesterol increased by 0.63 mg/dL (95% confidence interval [CI] [.38,.089]) and LDL by 0.39 mg/dL (0.19, 0.59) per 1 kg increase in weight from weeks 0 to48. Participants who experienced >10% weight gain (vs −5% to 5%) had an increased risk of DM (hazard ratio [HR] 2.01, 95% CI [1.30, 3.08]), metabolic syndrome (HR 2.24, 95% CI [1.55, 2.62]), and cardiometabolic outcomes (HR 1.54, 95% CI [1.22, 1.95]). Participants who lost more than 5% of their baseline weight had a lower risk of incident metabolic syndrome (HR 0.67, 95% CI [0.42, 1.07]). Trends for WC were similar. Conclusions Weight and body composition changes in the first year following ART initiation are associated with contemporaneous changes in metabolic parameters and subsequent cardiometabolic disease. Studies have reported the potential benefits of consuming conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and ruminant trans fatty acids (R-TFAs) in reducing the risk factors of metabolic syndrome (MetS). In addition, encapsulation of CLA and R-TFAs may improve their oral delivery and further decrease the risk factors of MetS. The objectives of this review were (1) to discuss the advantages of encapsulation; (2) to compare the materials and techniques used for encapsulating CLA and R-TFAs; and (3) to review the effects of encapsulated vs non-encapsulated CLA and R-TFAs on MetS risk factors. Examination of papers citing micro- and nano-encapsulation methods used in food sciences, as well as the effects of encapsulated vs non-encapsulated CLA and R-TFAs, was conducted using the PubMed database. A total of 84 papers were examined; of these, 18 studies were selected that contained information on the effects of encapsulated CLA and R-TFAs. The 18 studies that described encapsulation of CLA or R-TFAs indicated that micro- or nano-encapsulation processes stabilized CLA and prevented oxidation. CLA was mainly encapsulated using carbohydrates or proteins. So far, oil-in-water emulsification followed by spray-drying were the frequently used techniques for encapsulation of CLA. Further, 4 studies investigated the effects of encapsulated CLA on MetS risk factors compared with non-encapsulated CLA. A limited number of studies investigated the encapsulation of R-TFAs. The effects of encapsulated CLA or R-TFAs on the risk factors for MetS remain understudied; thus, additional studies comparing the effects of encapsulated and non-encapsulated CLA or R-TFAs are needed. Background: Antiretroviral therapy‐associated adverse effects and comorbidities are still pervasive in people living with HIV, especially metabolic syndrome (MetS). We investigated the age‐dependent prevalence of components of MetS and insulin resistance in children and adolescents living with HIV (CALWH). Methods: A cross‐sectional pilot study of CALWH treated at the Baylor Uganda Clinical Centre of Excellence in Kampala, Uganda, May to August 2021. The primary outcome of MetS was defined by both the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the Adult Treatment Panel (ATP III) criteria. We estimated the prevalence of MetS and its components for all participants and by the stratification factors. Results: We enrolled 90 children and adolescents, aged 6 to <10 years (n = 30), 10 to <16 years (n = 30), and ≥ 16 to <19 years (n = 30). Fifty‐one percent were females. The estimated prevalence of MetS was 1.11% (1 of 90) using either IDF or ATPIII criteria for all participants, and 3.33% in the oldest age group. Notably, while only one among study participants met the criterion based on having central obesity or blood pressure, over 55% of participants had one or more IDF component, with 47% having low high‐density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. Two participants (6.67%) in the group aged 10 to <16 years met one of the definitions for insulin resistance (IR) using the Homeostatic Model Assessment (HOMA‐IR) index. For every 1‐year increase in age, HOMA‐IR index increased by 0.04 (95% confidence interval: 0.01–0.08; p = 0.02). Conclusions: With increasing survival of CALWH into adulthood, lifetime exposure to ART, the frequency of MetS in this population may rise, increasing the lifetime risk for associated health problems. Objectives: This study investigated the relationship between living arrangements and metabolic syndrome (MetS) risk in the adult population in the Republic of Korea. Methods: The samples were derived from the data collected during the second year of the seventh Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The study targeted a total of 6,265 adults who were aged 20 years and above, and multiple logistic regression analysis was conducted. Living arrangements were classified into 4 categories: single-person households, 1-generation households, 2-generation households, and other family types. MetS was identified by the presence of at least 3 out of the 5 National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III criteria. Results: For men, the odds ratio (ORs) for MetS in 1- and 2-generation households, compared to single-person households, were 0.92 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.55-1.54) and 0.97 (95% CI, 0.58-1.62), respectively. The OR for other types of households was 0.96 (95% CI, 0.79-1.17). For women, the OR for MetS in 1- and 2-generation households, compared to single-person households, were 1.52 (95% CI, 1.15-2.01) and 1.29 (95% CI, 1.01-1.67), respectively. Conclusion: Our study suggests that a national strategy involving tailored interventions for women living in high-risk conditions is necessary to reduce the risk of MetS in Korean women. Background: L-Leucine (Leu) supplementation may benefit fat-free mass (FFM) per se and glucose metabolism. Objectives: To determine whether Leu supplementation during energy restriction blunted the loss of FFM, enhanced the loss of fat mass (FM) and improved glucose tolerance. Design: Thirty-seven adults, aged 20–65 years, with increased waist circumference and at least one other metabolic syndrome (MetS) component, were selected. We employed a two-arm parallel, double blind, randomized control trial (RCT) design. Participants were randomly assigned to an intervention group (leucine – 3 g/d) or placebo (lactose - 2.67 g/d), while following an individualised energy restricted diet for an 8-week period. Detailed body composition (DEXA), oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), insulin and components of MetS were measured before and after the trial. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) assessed the effect of Leu on an intention-to-treat (ITT) principle. Bootstrapping method with 1000 bootstrap samples was used to derive parameter estimates, standard errors, p-values, and 95% confidence intervals for all outcomes. Results: Adjusted for baseline values and other covariates, FFM (p = 0.045) and lean tissue mass (LTM) (p = 0.050) were significantly higher following Leu. These outcomes were modified by a significant treatment x sex interaction that indicated Leu had the greater effect in men. However, on adjustment for body composition changes, there was no difference in insulin sensitivity, oral glucose tolerance, or change in MetS components following Leu. Conclusion: Short-term leucine supplementation during energy restriction resulted in a greater preservation of FFM and LTM particularly in men, but did not impact glucose metabolism. Background: This study aims to investigate the relationship between gestational metabolic syndrome (GMS) and the Chinese Healthy Eating Index (CHEI) in mid-pregnancy, and to identify potentially beneficial or high-risk dietary habits. We have developed a mid-pregnancy version of CHEI-2022, adapting the Chinese Healthy Eating Index to align with the food quantity recommendations outlined in the 2022 Dietary Guidelines for Chinese Residents for mid-pregnancy. Methods: Using the inclusion and exclusion criteria, data from 2411 mid-pregnant individuals were collected through interviews. The Total CHEI score and its component scores were determined through analysis of responses from the food frequency questionnaire. GMS diagnosis involved conducting physical examinations and performing blood biochemical tests. A logistic regression model was employed to analyze the relationship between GMS or related indices and both the total CHEI score and its component scores. Results: The study identified an overall GMS prevalence of 21.65% (522 out of 2411 participants). During mid-pregnancy, participants diagnosed with GMS exhibited higher BMI, FBG, 1hPBG, 2hPBG, TC, TG, HDL, SBP, as well as higher educational levels and daily activity, compared to those without GMS (P < 0.001). After adjusting for potential confounders, participants with higher total CHEI scores (≥ 80) were found to have lower odds of GMS or related indices (P < 0.05). Increasing dietary intake of potatoes, whole grains, beans, dark green vegetables, and fruits, as per the CHEI recommendations, was associated with reduced odds of GMS or related indices (P < 0.05). Conclusion: A high-quality diet, as indicated by a total CHEI score of 80 or higher, and increased consumption of specific dietary components, namely potatoes, beans, dark green vegetables, and fruits, were found to effectively reduce the odds of GMS or related indices during mid-pregnancy. Simple Summary: Survivors of childhood brain tumors, because of the treatments they have undergone, have a greater risk of dying earlier from cardiovascular causes compared to the general population. The objective of this study was to evaluate differences between cardiovascular risk biomarkers and cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) results from childhood brain tumor survivors and healthy controls. We found worse CPET performance in survivors associated with higher endothelin-1 values compared to controls. Correlation analysis showed an inverse relationship between CPET results and leptin, emphasizing the role of radiotherapy as a possible cause in the genesis of a greater cardiovascular risk in survivors of childhood brain tumors. In recent decades, the improvement of treatments and the adoption of therapeutic protocols of international cooperation has led to an improvement in the survival of children affected by brain tumors. However, in parallel with the increase in survival, long-term side effects related to treatments have been observed over time, including the activation of chronic inflammatory processes and metabolic alterations, which can facilitate the onset of metabolic syndrome and increased cardiovascular risk. The aim of this study was to find possible statistically significant differences in the serum concentrations of early biomarkers of metabolic syndrome and in the results of cardiopulmonary exercise testing between survivors of childhood brain tumors and healthy controls. This is a prospective and observational study conducted on a group of 14 male patients who survived childhood brain tumors compared with the same number of healthy controls. The concentrations of early metabolic syndrome biomarkers [adiponectin, leptin, TNF-α, IL-1, IL-6, IL-10, endothelin-1, apolipoprotein B, and lipoprotein (a)] were measured and a cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) was performed. Results: Childhood brain tumor survivors performed worse on average than controls on the CPET. Furthermore, they showed higher endothelin-1 values than controls (p = 0.025). The CPET results showed an inverse correlation with leptin. The differences found highlight the greater cardiovascular risk of brain tumor survivors, and radiotherapy could be implicated in the genesis of this greater cardiovascular risk. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in a Spanish rural population and assess differences in prevalence according to loneliness level, social isolation, and social support. This is a cross-sectional study of 310 patients. MetS was defined by National Cholesterol Education Program–Third Adult Treatment Panel. The UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) Loneliness Scale, Multidimensional Scale of Social Support, and Lubben Social Network Scale were used to assess loneliness, perceived social support, and social isolation. Almost half of the participants fulfilled MetS diagnosis criteria. Subjects with MetS showed significantly higher levels of loneliness, less social support, and greater social isolation. Systolic blood pressure was significantly higher in socially isolated rural adults. Environmental factors may play a key role in the prevalence of MetS, so specific screening and prevention programs could help health professionals prevent the increasing rates of MetS in rural populations under these socially specific conditions of vulnerability.
