Background: Detraining is the partial or complete loss of physical training-induced adaptations as a result of exercise interruption or reduction. The COVID-19 pandemic led to the discontinuation of many older adult exercise programs and led to increased depressive symptoms (DS), increased sedentary behavior (SB), and decreased quality of life (QoL). Objective: To evaluate the effects of detraining, in the pandemic, on physical capacity and its relationship with DS, QoL, and SB of community-dwelling older adults. Methods: The physical capacity (static balance, dynamic balance, and lower limb and handgrip strength) of 35 participants was assessed prepandemic and after 18 and 24 months of the pandemic. DS, QoL, and SB were evaluated only at 18-month period. The analysis of variance for repeated measures or the Friedman and Pearson or Spearman tests were used for statistical analysis. Results: There was a decline in dynamic balance (p <.001) and strength in the lower limbs (p <.001) in the first 18 months, as well as maintenance in the following 6 months. The reduction in dynamic balance during the 18 months of the pandemic was associated with greater DS (p =.015; r =.414) and worse QoL (p =.024; r = −.381) in this period. More time spent on SB (p =.024; r =.386) in the 18th month was associated with worse dynamic balance in the following 6 months. Conclusion: Detraining in the pandemic setting led to long-lasting harmful effects, which can last for 2 years, on the physical capacity of community-dwelling older adults. This study examines religiosity patterns across childhood and later adulthood and their associations with later-life health using an experimental module from the 2016 Health and Retirement Study (N = 1649; Mean Age = 64.0). Latent class analysis is used to categorize individuals by commonalities in religious attendance, religious identity, and spiritual identity. Cross-sectional and longitudinal associations are then explored using probable depression, disability, and mortality as health indicators. Results reveal complex patterns, often characterized by declining attendance and fluctuating identity. Relationships with health appear stronger in cross-sectional analyses, suggesting that some associations may be non-causal. Individuals with consistently strong religiosity show significantly better psychological health compared to their relatively non-religious counterparts. Moreover, the absence of religiosity in later adulthood is associated with an increased risk of mortality. Overall, the findings support the promotion of religiosity whilst acknowledging individual variations and highlighting the need for more individualistic approaches to the study of religion and health. Child loss is recognized as a risk factor for Chinese older adults' mental health, yet the differential impact and protective factors related to this association are not fully understood. This study examines potential differences in the effects of the deceased child's gender and only-child status, as well as the moderating role of community care service. Data is collected from a sample of 9686 Chinese older adults through the 2018 China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey. The results indicate that the loss of a son has a more significant impact on depressive symptoms among Chinese older adults than the loss of a daughter. The effect of child loss on depressive symptoms is not related to being an only child. Furthermore, community care service can buffer the negative impact of child loss on depressive symptoms. The relationship between intimate partner violence (IPV), depression, and risky alcohol use is complex and multi-dimensional. Depression has been documented as a common consequence of experiencing IPV, where depressed individuals might turn to substances like alcohol as a coping mechanism. Thus, assessing the indirect effect of depression in the relationship between IPV and alcohol abuse in African American and Hispanic women is warranted. Cross-sectional data was collected from 152 African American and Hispanic women living in Miami, Florida. Descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and Hayes' direct and indirect mediation analyses were conducted. A total of 77% reported IPV. The mean age was 42.84 (SD = 10.69). About 57% of participants identified as African American, and 62% identified as Hispanic/Latino. On average, participant depression scores (8.6, SD = 5.7) showed mild-to-moderate severity, and the average alcohol abuse score was 15.5 (±8.9), suggesting risky alcohol use. IPV was directly associated with alcohol abuse (β =.50, 95% CI [.18,.82]; [ R 2 =.059, F (1, 150) = 9.37, p <.001), and with depression (β =.48, 95% CI [.27,.69]; [ R 2 =.119, F (1, 150) = 20.43, p <.001). Depression modified the effect of IPV on alcohol abuse by about 19% (β =.56, 95% CI [.33,.80]; [ R 2 =.185, F (2, 149) = 16.87, p <.0026). Results of this study suggest that depression is an important component to be considered when addressing alcohol abuse among women with experiences of IPV. Cultural and religious norms, as well as trauma-related cognitions and recovery actions, are known to impact the well-being of survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV). Although acknowledged as a key component, there is scant research on the recovery trajectories of women who have experienced IPV, in particular on survivors from collectivistic societies such as the Jewish Ultra-Orthodox (JUO) community in Israel. A mediation model examined the recovery process of 261 Israeli JUO survivors. In particular, it tested whether the normalization of violence and women's endorsement of Jewish religious norms that justify violence would be directly and negatively associated with women's well-being and positively associated with psychopathology. Additionally, it examined whether women's normalization of violence and support of religious norms would positively predict women's negative trauma-related cognitions. In turn, these cognitions were expected to negatively predict women's engagement in recovery actions, help-seeking behaviors, and faith-based responses but positively predict disengagement responses. The model further posited that women's engagement in steps toward recovery, help-seeking behaviors, and faith-based responses would positively predict women's well-being and negatively predict psychopathology. In contrast, women's disengagement responses would negatively predict women's well-being and positively predict their psychopathology. Bootstrap results indicated that supporting religious norms positively predicted women's trauma-related cognitions, which then negatively predicted women's recovery actions, help-seeking behaviors, and faith-based responses but positively predicted women's disengagement responses. Women's recovery actions and faith-based responses positively predicted women's well-being, while disengagement responses positively predicted women's psychopathology. Emerging research suggests that reproductive coercion and abuse (RCA), like intimate partner violence (IPV), is associated with poorer mental and sexual health outcomes, including greater symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression and poorer markers of physical and sexual health such as sexually transmitted infections, unplanned pregnancies and lowered sexual agency. Although victims/survivors of RCA report long-lasting impacts on future relationships, including fear and anxiety, little is known about impacts of RCA on anxiety and general wellbeing, nor emotional and mental components of sexual health that comprise a person's sexual self-concept. With community samples of participants in Australia, we conducted two studies to explore the impact of RCA and IPV on psychological (study 1) and sexual (study 2) health outcomes. Study 1 (n = 368) found that experiencing IPV and RCA both significantly and uniquely contributed to poorer mental health outcomes. After controlling for age and IPV, RCA significantly predicted symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress, PTSD, and reduced satisfaction with life. Study 2 (n = 329) found that IPV and RCA differentially predicted various components of sexual health. IPV predicted decreased sexual satisfaction and increased sexual anxiety, depression, and fear of sexual encounters. After controlling for age and IPV, RCA significantly and uniquely predicted lower levels of sexual assertiveness and increased sexual depression and fear of sexual encounters, but not sexual satisfaction or anxiety. We conclude that RCA is associated with significant psychological distress and a negative sexual self-concept that may impact future relationships. We aimed to examine the relation between the fear of COVID-19 and depression, anxiety and burnout of intensive carenurses. This cross-sectional and descriptive research was conducted with 116 intensive care nurses. The data were obtained with a web-based questionnaire created with the "Descriptive Information Form", "COVID-19 Fear Scale", "Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale Short Form" and "Burnout Short Version". A significant positive correlation was found between depression (r = 0.498, p <.001), anxiety (r = 0.633, p <.001), stress (r = 0.589, p <.001) and burnout (r = 0.299, p =.001) levels of intensive care nurses with a mean age of 30.18 ± 6.55 with the help of the "COVID-19 Fear Scale". It was determined that the mental health of intensive care nurses was at risk and they reached the level of burnout. Intensive care nurses should be supported in understanding the symptoms of psychological problems and in stress management, personal and professional self-care. Objective: The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of past alcohol use and to evaluate patterns of alcohol use among Chinese adolescents. Methods: 1,707 students from 11 high schools in Macao (SAR) China self-reported their alcohol use measured by the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT). Latent class analysis and multinomial logistic regression were conducted to examine patterns of drinking and their correlates with alcohol-related use problems. Results: The prevalence of past alcohol use and problematic alcohol use (AUDIT ≥8) was 26.0% and 3.2%, respectively. Latent class analysis demonstrated that a five-class model best fit the participants' alcohol use patterns, including a heavy consumption group, two moderate consumption groups and two light consumption groups. Compared with the light consumption group, adolescents over the age of 15 (vs. 15 years or younger) were more likely to be classified into the moderate consumption group with mild negative consequences, and adolescents who smoked were more likely to be classified into all other groups vs. the reference group. Background: Compared to ordinary student in the same age group, nursing students experience notably higher rates of depression and anxiety. Negative life events (NLEs) and resilience were recognized as risk factors and protective factors, respectively. There is little literature on the complex interaction of these factors among nursing students. Objectives: The study aims to explore the potential relationship of NLEs, resilience, and gender with symptoms of depression and anxiety among nursing students. Methods: A cross-sectional design was used for this study. A total of 568 participants from three universities in East, South and North China were recruited. Data collection instruments included socio-demographic characteristics, the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale, the 10-item Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, the Adolescent Life Events Self-Rating Scale, and The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. A moderated mediation model was used to analyze the data. Results: NLEs and resilience significantly related to depression and anxiety (r = -0.289 ~ 0.454, all ps < 0.01). NLEs had a direct effect on depression (B = 0.251, p < 0.001) and anxiety (B = 0.307, p < 0.001). Analysis of mediating effects revealed that NLEs influenced depression (B = 0.02, 95% CI : 0.004–0.041) and anxiety (B = 0.019, 95% CI : 0.004–0.040) through resilience pathways. Additionally, gender was found to have a moderating effect on the direct association of NLEs with anxiety (B = -0.031, p < 0.05), with males showing a greater association. Conclusions: The findings suggest that improving resilience may help break the relationship of NLEs with depression and anxiety in nursing students. Background: The Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) has had a significant impact on healthcare organizations, leading to a reduction in screening. The pandemic period has caused important psychological repercussions in the most fragile patients. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the levels of depression, anxiety, peri-traumatic stress, and physical symptoms in patients undergoing colposcopy during the COVID-19 pandemic and to compare these data with the post-pandemic period. Design: This longitudinal study included 96 individuals undergoing colposcopy, aged between 22 and 64, who were examined between March 2020 and December 2023. Methods: Participants were assessed at four distinct time points, referred to as T0, T1, T2, and T3. T0 encompassed the pandemic period, ranging from March 2020 to August 2020, while T1 occurred 1 year later, T2 and T3 correspond to data collected in 2022 and 2023. Statistical analysis was conducted to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on various psychological variables. Descriptive statistics, including means, standard deviations, and frequency distributions, were calculated for each psychological variable within each time period. Results: Our findings revealed a significant reduction in peri-traumatic stress and pain levels in the post-pandemic (from 2021 to 2023) period compared to the pandemic period. Conversely, anxiety and depression levels exhibited a statistically significant increase in the post-pandemic period and then gradually decrease in the subsequent follow-up. Conclusion: This study provides valuable insights into the profound impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on psychological distress experienced during the pandemic period itself, as well as its enduring effects on anxiety and depression in the subsequent period. Objective: Evaluate the prevalence and risk factors associated with depression symptoms at 10 years after traumatic brain injury (TBI) and compare with results at 10 weeks and 1 year. Methods: A large cohort of prospective admissions with TBI were followed up for 10 years. Depression using HADS (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale) score > 8 was measured. Several injury and demographic features were examined for association with depression. Results: Over 4 years, 1130 individuals were recruited of whom 916 attended at 1 year; after 10 years, 552 attended and 210 had died. 154 (17%) of the cohort was lost to follow-up. The prevalence of depression at 10 weeks was 56.3% [95%CI 52.2–60.5], at 1 year was 42.4% [95%CI 38.3–46.5] and 10 years 38.4% [95%CI 34.3–42.5]. There was considerable change in individual scores over time in both directions. A multivariable analysis identified the independent predictors of 10-year depression score as lower GCS, social deprivation, female gender, past psychiatric history, alcohol intoxication and unemployment. Age, ethnicity, social support, TBI etiology, CT abnormality and medical comorbidity were insignificant. Conclusions: While the overall level of symptoms at 10-year post-TBI remains high, there is considerable change in individual depression status over time. Household food insecurity (HFI) has been related to adverse maternal‐child health outcomes and mental health worsening during pregnancy. Few studies evaluated the temporal association between HFI and anxiety and depressive symptoms in pregnant women, and this association remains not completely understood. This study aimed to systematically review the association between HFI and symptoms of depression and anxiety in pregnant individuals. The systematic review protocol was registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (CRD42022373615). Systematic searches were conducted on 10 electronic databases and grey literature. Two researchers independently conducted the study selection, data extraction process, and the risk of bias assessment. Random‐effects meta‐analysis models were used, and I2 > 40% indicated high heterogeneity across studies. Eighteen articles were included for the systematic review, comprising n = 27,882, and a total of 18,987 pregnant individuals aged between 14 and 45 years were included in the meta‐analysis. The prevalence of HFI reported in studies ranged from 12.6% to 62.1% (n = 17). The prevalence of depressive and anxiety symptoms ranged from 18% to 49% (n = 11) and 23% to 34% (n = 2), respectively. HFI during pregnancy was associated with increased odds of experiencing symptoms of depression [(OR: 2.52; 95% CI: 2.11–3.02), I2 = 73.23%]. The quality of evidence was very low due to high heterogeneity. Our findings highlighted the association between HFI and depression symptoms during pregnancy. Findings from this study suggest the importance of assessing HFI and mental health during pregnancy. Background: Kidney failure at any age has a significant impact on quality of life (QoL) but the overall symptom burden for children and young people (CYP) is poorly described. Kidney failure has no cure and whilst transplantation is the preferred management option, it is not always possible, with patients requiring supportive care at the end of their lives. Aim: To use the literature to understand the symptom burden for CYP with kidney failure who are approaching end-of-life. Methods: Using three databases, a systematic literature review was performed to identify eligible studies to extract data on symptoms experienced in CYP aged < 21 years with kidney failure. Data extraction was completed by two authors using a pre-designed proforma. Study quality assessment was undertaken using the BMJ AXIS tool. Results: A total of 20,003 titles were screened to yielding 35 eligible studies including 2,862 CYP with chronic kidney disease (CKD), of whom 1,624 (57%) had CKD stage 5. The studies included a median of 30 (range 7–241) patients. Symptoms were subcategorised into eight groups: sleep, mental health, gastrointestinal, dermatology, ear, nose and throat (ENT), neurology, multiple symptoms, and ophthalmology. The prevalences of the most commonly reported symptoms were: restless leg syndrome 16.7–45%, sleep disordered breathing 20–46%, hypersomnia 14.3–60%, depression 12.5–67%, anxiety 5.3–34%, overall gastrointestinal symptoms 43–82.6%, nausea and vomiting 15.8–68.4%, abdominal pain 10.5–67.4%, altered appetite or anorexia 19–90%, xerosis 53.5–100%, pruritis 18.6–69%, headache 24–76.2% and ophthalmological symptoms 26%. Within each subgroup, the symptom definitions used were heterogeneous, the methods of assessment were varied and some symptoms, such as pain and constipation, were poorly represented. Conclusions: There is a marked lack of evidence relating to the symptom burden for CYP with CKD. This study highlights the high symptom prevalence, particularly in relation to sleep, mental health, headache, dermatological and gastrointestinal symptoms. Background: Physical activity (PA) offers innumerable benefits and is a promising intervention against common mental disorders, such as depression and anxiety. We examined the association between PA and depression or anxiety in adults. Materials and Methods: A study was conducted between March 2021 and August 2022 using a cross-sectional study design. We recruited 334 participants >40 years of age from the noncommunicable disease (NCD) screening clinic of a tertiary care institute in North India. Health-enhancing PA (HEPA) was estimated using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), while depression and anxiety were screened using the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder scales. Bivariate and univariate analyses were performed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21 to depict our results. Results: Engagement in HEPA was 23.4%. The HEPA depicted significant socioeconomic disparities. The mean total cholesterol and triglyceride levels were considerably higher in the HEPA active group, despite having lower GAD-7 and PHQ-9 scale scores. The prevalence of depressive and anxiety symptoms was 59.0% and 13.4%. PA depicted better odds against depression but not against anxiety symptoms. Conclusions: Low HEPA engagement in adults is a matter of concern, and it is high time we look beyond NCDs toward the risk factors. It is essential to incorporate PA counseling universally and not be restricted to a particular clinical department to realize its full potential in restraining the growing NCD burden. Experiencing sexual harassment and bullying during military service can lead to negative consequences for a soldier's mental health and life satisfaction, including increased risk of depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress. No studies have to date investigated the prevalence and correlates of sexual harassment and bullying among Norwegian Afghanistan veterans, despite the increased global focus on these topics. In 2020, 6,205 Norwegian Afghanistan veterans (8.3% women) completed an online post-deployment survey, including questions about experiences of sexual harassment, bullying, mental health, and life satisfaction. Compared to their male counterparts, female veterans experienced significantly more sexual harassment and bullying during Afghanistan deployment (3.2% vs. 0.04% for experiencing sexual harassment, and 4.0% vs. 1.0% for bullying) and during other military services (14.3% vs. 0.4% for sexual harassment, and 15.9% vs. 3.7% for bullying). Sexual harassment was associated with younger age and experiencing childhood sexual harassment for both women and men, with men also having longer deployments. Bullying was associated with longer deployments and childhood sexual harassment for women, while men who reported bullying more often had longer deployments, held an officer rank, were less inclined to have a spouse/intimate partner, and reported childhood sexual harassment and bullying. Both sexual harassment and bullying were associated with increased risk of mental health problems and reduced life satisfaction for women, but this was only true for bullying among men. Despite lower reported rates of workplace harassment compared to studies from other cultures, this study demonstrates that sexual harassment and bullying in the military can negatively impact soldiers' mental health and life satisfaction. Notably, female veterans' mental health and life satisfaction appear to be particularly affected by sexual harassment during military service, an association not seen in males. Sexual minority men (SMM) experience intimate partner violence (IPV) at a substantially high rate and also bear high burdens of adverse mental health outcomes. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to consolidate existing evidence on the associations between experiencing IPV and adverse mental health outcomes (depressive symptoms, anxiety, stress, etc.) among SMM. Following the Preferred Reporting Items For Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guideline, we identified 22 published studies encompassing data from 18,454 individuals, all of which were cross-sectional in design and half of which were conducted in the U.S. We found that experiencing IPV was associated with an increased risk of depressive symptoms and anxiety with a pooled Adjusted Odds Ratios (AORs) of 1.71 (95% CI [1.43, 2.05]) and 1.89 (95% CI [1.46, 2.43]), respective. Studies also found that IPV was positively associated with suicide-related risk (AOR = 2.71, 95% CI [2.21, 3.32] and perceived loneliness. Studies varied in their IPV measures and recall periods and used diverse mental health measurement tools like PHQ-9/GAD-7, Perceived Stress Scale, and the Suicide Behaviors Questionnaire-Revised. This systematic review and meta-analysis revealed an urgent need to examine the effects of IPV on SMM's mental well-being in low- and middle-income countries using standardized IPV measurement tools. Future research should employ a longitudinal design to track the long-term effects of IPV on the mental well-being of SMM and explore potential interventions for mitigating these impacts over time. Background: Substance use and mental health are highly correlated, though few studies assess the risk for depression and anxiety associated with dual and polysubstance use among college students. The purpose of this study was to characterize the relationship between alcohol, cannabis, and e-cigarette exclusive, dual, and polysubstance use and depression and anxiety among U.S. college students by racial and ethnic subgroup and stratified by sex. Methods: Data from 83,467 undergraduate students participating in the 2020–2021 Health Minds Survey, a multi-campus, web-based survey, were used. Sex-stratified logistic regression models examined the effects of exclusive (past 30-day cannabis use, past 30-day e-cigarette use, past 2-week heavy alcohol use), dual (two among cannabis, e-cigarette, or alcohol use), and polysubstance (all three substances) use on anxiety (≥10 GAD-7 score) and depression (≥15 PHQ-9 score). Results: The study included 60,746 females and 22,721 males. Among females, compared to those who exclusively used alcohol, dual users of cannabis and e-cigarette had the largest odds for depression (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 1.92) and anxiety (aOR = 1.69) followed by polysubstance users (aORs = 1.85 and 1.53, respectively). Among males, compared to those who exclusively used alcohol, dual users of cannabis and e-cigarette had the largest odds for depression (aOR = 2.72) and anxiety (aOR = 2.23) followed by polysubstance users (aOR = 1.71 and 1.85, respectively). African American female and male students had lower odds of anxiety and depression compared to White students. Conclusions: The results suggest that single, dual, and polysubstance use are associated with anxiety and depression among U.S. college students, though not necessarily in additive ways. This study examined the associations among cardiovascular comorbidities, symptoms of depression and anxiety, and physical activity in persons with multiple sclerosis. Participants with multiple sclerosis (N = 217) completed demographic, cardiovascular comorbidity, depression, and anxiety self-report measures, and wore an accelerometer for 7 days. We examined the bivariate, non-parametric correlations among the variables and conducted parametric, independent samples t-tests when examining the differences in variables based on cardiovascular comorbidity status. Bivariate correlation analysis indicated that there were statistically significant associations between anxiety scores, but not depression scores, and cardiovascular comorbidities. Physical activity, especially moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), was correlated with cardiovascular comorbidities. There were small significant differences based on hyperlipidemia status in anxiety scores (p = 0.015, d = -0.42), MVPA (p < 0.001, d = 0.44), and steps/day (p < 0.001, d = 0.50), and based on hypertension status in anxiety scores (p = 0.010, d = -0.35), depression scores (p = 0.046, d = -0.26), MVPA (p = 0.003, d = 0.41), and steps/day (p < 0.001, d = 0.53). The findings indicate that there are significant associations among cardiovascular comorbidities, symptoms of depression and anxiety, and physical activity in persons with multiple sclerosis. The Emerging Adulthood is a complex and chaotic period and depression is one of the main psychological health problems during this period. Overgeneral autobiographical memory (OGM) is prevalent among patients with clinical depression. However, the prediction of OGM in groups with non-clinical depression and its influencing mechanisms remain inconclusive. Studies have shown that OGM and early parenting behaviour are vulnerable factors of depression in emerging adulthood, which may be triggered by negative life events. Our longitudinal study included 241 participants (Mage = 21.88 years). At baseline, participants completed measures of current negative life events, depression, early parenting behaviour and an autobiographical memory test. Thereafter, they were tracked for depression every 35 days. We used the latent class growth model to differentiate levels and trends of depression among non-clinical participants. The analysis showed that the effect of negative life events on depression was moderated by OGM and early parenting behaviour. However, this moderating effect was found only in the low-risk depression group. Our findings indicate that early parenting behaviour might account for the different mechanisms of OGM production in non-clinical groups. Objective: The current study aimed to examine the relationship between depressive symptoms and quality of life among Jordanian community-dwelling older adults. Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive correlational design was used. A convenience sample (N = 602) was selected to recruit the participants in the Amman governorate during the period from August to November 2021. Results: Findings demonstrated that the mean (SD) age of older adults was 67.5 (7.0) years and 51.5% of participants were females. Also, 54.1% of the participants experienced moderate to severe depressive symptoms with a total mean (SD) score was 8.57 on a scale of 0 to 15, while the mean (SD) for the quality of life scale was 12.12 (3.85) on a scale of 4 to 20. Significant differences existed in quality of life and depressive symptoms based on marital status (p <.001), educational level (p <.001), working status (p <.01), income (p <.001), and chronic disease (p <.01). Quality of life and its domains were negatively associated with depressive symptoms (B= − 0.596, p <.001). Also, marital status, working, educational level, income, and chronic disease were associated with depressive symptoms. Background: Studies have reported an increase in mental health disorders during the perinatal period as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the quarantine restrictions imposed. The effects of untreated maternal mental health have an adverse impact on the mother, the development of the baby, and the family system. Determinants of health, recent natural disasters, and disparities in perinatal care that impact perinatal women in Puerto Rico place them at a higher risk of mental health difficulties. Aim: It is therefore, of extreme importance, to evaluate the effect that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on this vulnerable population. Design: This is a cross-sectional observational study that interviewed 100 women in the perinatal period during the COVID-19 lockdown measures in Puerto Rico. Participants completed the Spanish version of the COVID-19 Perinatal Experiences (COPE-IS) questionnaire and assessments of clinical depression (PHQ-9) and anxiety (GAD-7). Results: The prevalence of moderate to severe risk of depression in this sample is 14%, while 17% showed clinical signs of anxiety. Concerns about social impact and the quarantine mandate were the most common stressors reported. Additionally, our sample reported concerns about the impact the pandemic would have on future employment and finances. Conclusion: Perinatal women showed significantly higher prevalence of depression and anxiety during the COVID −19 pandemic when compared to the mental health prevalence of the general population pre-pandemic in Puerto Rico. Aims/Background: This research aimed to identify the sources of social support and its relationship with perinatal depression (PPD) during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Design/Methods: We carried out a cross-sectional study with a sample of 3,356 women during perinatal period living in Spain. We used five items from the Spanish version of the Coronavirus Perinatal Experiences – Impact Survey to assess the impact of COVID-19 on social support and, the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale was used to assess depressive symptomatology. Results: The results obtained identified a possible relationship between seeking in-person support (OR = 0.51; 0.67, during pregnancy and after delivery respectively) and degree of feeling social support (OR = 0.77; 0.77) during the COVID-19 pandemic with a lower prevalence of depression. Otherwise, requiring the help of a mental health professional (OR = 2.92; 2.41) and weeks of confinement (OR = 1.03; 1.01) appeared to be associated with a higher prevalence of depression. During pregnancy, a possible association was found between the degree of concern about future changes in support and involvement of family and friends (OR = 1.75) with a higher prevalence of depression. On the other hand, in the postpartum period, there seems to be a relationship between seeking social support through social media (OR = 1.32) with a higher prevalence of depression and receiving support from friends (OR = 0.70) and health professionals (OR = 0.53) with a lower prevalence of depression. Objective: The objective of this study was to construct and validate a structural equation model (SEM) to identify factors associated with sleep quality in awake patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) and to assist in the development of clinical intervention strategies. Research Methods/Setting: In this cross‐sectional study, 200 awake patients who were cared for in the ICU of a tertiary hospital in China were surveyed via several self‐report questionnaires and wearable actigraphy sleep monitoring devices. Based on the collected data, structural equation modelling analysis was performed using SPSS and AMOS statistical analysis software. The study is reported using the STROBE checklist. Results: The fit indices of the SEM were acceptable: χ2/df = 1.676 (p <.001) and RMSEA =.058 (p < 0.080). Anxiety/depression had a direct negative effect on the sleep quality of awake patients cared for in the ICU (β = −.440, p <.001). In addition, disease‐freeness progress had an indirect negative effect on the sleep quality of awake patients cared for in the ICU (β = −.142, p <.001). Analgesics had an indirect negative effect on the sleep quality of awake patients cared for in the ICU through pain and sedatives (β = −.082, p <.001). Sedation had a direct positive effect on the sleep quality of conscious patients cared for in the ICU (β =.493; p <.001). Conclusion: The results of the SEM showed that the sleep quality of awake patients cared for in the ICU is mainly affected by psychological and disease‐related factors, especially anxiety, depression and pain, so we can improve the sleep quality of patients through psychological intervention and drug intervention. Aims: To investigate the prevalence of anxiety and depression symptoms in intensive care unit (ICU) patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and to explore which elements are risk factors for the development of anxiety and depression symptoms. Design: A cross‐sectional study. Methods: A total of 1028 ICU patients with CVD were enrolled in this cross‐sectional study. Logistic regression was used to assess risk factors and associations between anxiety and depression symptoms, and mediation analysis was used to explore the effect of risk factors on the association between anxiety and depression symptoms. Reporting of the study followed the STROBE checklist. Results: The results showed that among ICU patients with CVD, 38.1% had anxiety symptoms, 28.7% had depression symptoms and 19.3% had both anxiety and depression symptoms, and there was a significant association between anxiety and depression symptoms. We also identified female gender, hypertension, hyperlipidemia and cardiac function class IV as independent risk factors for anxiety and depression symptoms. Importantly, these factors also mediated the association between anxiety and depression symptoms, emphasising their role in the psychological well‐being of this patient group. Conclusion: ICU patients with CVD were prone to anxiety and depression symptoms. Female gender, hypertension, hyperlipidemia and cardiac function class IV were identified as independent risk factors that also served as mediators in the relationship between anxiety and depression symptoms. Especially, cardiac function class IV emerged as a critical factor in this association. Relevance to Clinical Practice: It is imperative for critical care professionals to recognize the elevated risk of depression and anxiety among ICU patients with severe CVD, especially those with cardiac function class IV, hypertension, hyperlipidemia and females. Objectives: This exploratory study aims to: 1) evaluate mental health stigma levels among agricultural youth directors, 2) examine the influence of professional characteristics on stigma, and 3) investigate the relationship between agricultural youth directors' stigma levels and their self-efficacy. Methods: An online survey was administered from March to May 2022 to 642 agricultural youth directors in Illinois who work with youth aged 1–19. Directors' personal and perceived stigmas toward mental illness were measured using the Depression Stigma Scale. Directors' self-efficacy (perceived level of knowledge and confidence) across 19 mental health topics was measured using a 3-point Likert scale. Analyses were conducted by generating descriptive statistics and performing Mann–Whitney U tests on the data. Results: The median personal depression stigma score was 7.57 (SD = 8.02). Our analyses identified significantly higher personal depression stigma scores among men, FFA advisors, agricultural educators, and those lacking personal experience with mental illness. A lack of self-efficacy correlated significantly with increased personal stigma. Conclusions: This study underscores the critical need for targeted educational interventions to reduce stigma among agricultural youth directors and enchance mental health literacy. Objective: Migrant farmworkers are at an increased risk of experiencing high levels of stress, depression, anxiety, and problematic substance use. Farmworker behavioral health is a predominant concern for agricultural health and safety efforts. While substance use has been found to be a visible part of the work environment among farming populations, there is scarce information about how farmworkers who are exposed to substance use at work are impacted. Methods: This exploratory assessment investigated the association between substance use exposure at work and migrant farmworkers' (N = 58) symptoms of depression, anxiety, and coping strategies used. Univariate, bivariate, and regression analyses were conducted to examine data from a survey administered to migrant farmworkers in Southern California's Riverside and Imperial Valley counties. Results: Exposure to substance use at work was significantly associated with farmworkers reporting more severe symptoms of anxiety (p =.018). We also found that anxiety among farmworkers was significantly related to their experiences of sexual harassment (p =.026), being called names or insulted (p =.05), feeling unsafe (p =.005), having an increased work burden (p =.001), and caring for a colleague (p =.001). Furthermore, as exposure to substance use at work increased, farmworkers reported more severe symptoms of depression (F (1,45) = 7.90, p =.007) and anxiety (F (1,45) = 16.743, p =.001). To cope, the farmworkers in our sample reported using emotion-focused coping strategies most often. Conclusions: Substance use exposure at work can affect migrant farmworker health and safety. College student mental health has been a critical concern for professional counselors. Anxiety and depressive disorders have become increasingly prevalent over the past decade. Utilizing machine learning, a subset of artificial intelligence (AI), we developed predictive models (i.e., eXtreme Gradient Boosting [XGBoost], Random Forest, Decision Tree, and Logistic Regression) to identify US college students at heightened risk of diagnosable anxiety and depressive disorders. The dataset included 61,619 students from 133 US higher education institutions and was partitioned into a 90:10 ratio for training and testing the models. We employed hyperparameter tuning and cross‐validation to optimize model performance and examined multiple measures of predictive performance (e.g., area under the receiver operating characteristic curve [AUC], accuracy, sensitivity). Results revealed strong discriminative power in our machine learning predictive models with AUC of 0.74 and 0.77, indicating current financial situation, sense of belonging on campus, disability status, and age as the top predictors of anxiety and depressive disorders. This study provides a practical tool for professional counselors to proactively identify students for anxiety and depressive disorders before these conditions escalate. Background: Cortical morphometry is an intermediate phenotype that is closely related to the genetics and onset of major depressive disorder (MDD), and cortical morphometric networks are considered more relevant to disease mechanisms than brain regions. We sought to investigate changes in cortical morphometric networks in MDD and their relationship with genetic risk in healthy controls. Methods: We recruited healthy controls and patients with MDD of Han Chinese descent. Participants underwent DNA extraction and magnetic resonance imaging, including T 1-weighted and diffusion tensor imaging. We calculated polygenic risk scores (PRS) based on previous summary statistics from a genome-wide association study of the Chinese Han population. We used a novel method based on Kullback–Leibler divergence to construct the morphometric inverse divergence (MIND) network, and we included the classic morphometric similarity network (MSN) as a complementary approach. Considering the relationship between cortical and white matter networks, we also constructed a streamlined density network. We conducted group comparison and PRS correlation analyses at both the regional and network level. Results: We included 130 healthy controls and 195 patients with MDD. The results indicated enhanced connectivity in the MIND network among patients with MDD and people with high genetic risk, particularly in the somatomotor (SMN) and default mode networks (DMN). We did not observe significant findings in the MSN. The white matter network showed disruption among people with high genetic risk, also primarily in the SMN and DMN. The MIND network outperformed the MSN network in distinguishing MDD status. Limitations: Our study was cross-sectional and could not explore the causal relationships between cortical morphological changes, white matter connectivity, and disease states. Some patients had received antidepressant treatment, which may have influenced brain morphology and white matter network structure. Conclusion: The genetic mechanisms of depression may be related to white matter disintegration, which could also be associated with decoupling of the SMN and DMN. Objectives: We investigated the relationship between olfactory function and depression and suggested future research in this area from rhinology. Methods: We independently searched 5 databases (PubMed, SCOPUS, Embase, the Web of Science, and the Cochrane database) for recent studies published from December 2019 to the present. From the obtained studies, we reviewed the findings on olfactory function and depression using a questionnaire to measure depression and olfactory tests. Results: The olfactory function test score based on the UPSIT-40 (standardized mean difference = −.37 [−.66; −.08], P =.0123) was significantly lower in the depression group than in the control group. The olfactory function score based on the Sniffin' sticks test for identification, discrimination, and threshold was lower in the depression group than in the control. A meta-analysis of the studies showed that depressed patients showed lower olfactory function than the control group. Conclusions and Significance: The findings revealed that an understanding of the relationship between olfaction and depression can be determined using an analysis methodology and a standardized olfactory test. In the midst of a pandemic like COVID-19, migrant workers are highly vulnerable to the risk of mental health challenges and disorders. This study aimed to examine the variations in mental health and associated factors among migrant workers in Korea during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 830 migrant workers were included in this quantitative population-based study across two distinct COVID-19 periods: 415 from August 15, 2020 to January 20, 2021 (termed "during COVID-19" post-WHO pandemic declaration) and 415 from June 10 to September 18, 2023 (termed "after COVID-19" post-WHO and Korean Government announcement of the end COVID-19 as a global health emergency). The mental health of migrants was assessed using Patient Health Questionnaire-9 for depression and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 for anxiety, and compared between the two defined COVID-19 periods. Migrant workers exhibited higher means of depression (15.99 ± 5.16 vs. 8.78 ± 5.77) and anxiety (11.02 ± 4.45 vs. 6.97 ± 4.42) during the COVID-19 compared to after the COVID-19. The prevalence of severe depression (30.4% vs. 8.2%, p =.038) and severe anxiety (24.1% vs. 5.3%, p =.047) was significantly higher during the COVID-19 than after the pandemic. Changes in the mean depression scores among migrants were significantly influenced by living status (0.12 ± 11.10, p =.030) and employment status (0.44 ± 10.33, p =.043), while changes in mean anxiety scores were influenced by social relief funds (2.88 ± 8.61, p =.046) and employment status (1.13 ± 8.39, p =.012). This study highlights the increased susceptibility of migrant workers to depression and anxiety during COVID-19 compared to after the pandemic. Thus, it is imperative to prioritize the expansion of social support funds, ensure employment stability, and implement regular health check-up services to reduce mental health disorders among migrants. Few studies have examined how the personal characteristics of students, together with factors from their local social environments and communities, affect students living in generally high levels of social disruption. We examined the influence that personal characteristics as well as factors from the local social environments and communities may have on Colombian students' levels of depressive symptoms shortly after the end of the of armed conflict. Data were collected from 710 students attending the fifth grade in a random sample of elementary schools in the province of Sucre in Colombia. Information was gathered on the students' ages and gender as well as characteristics of their parents, school factors, and community factors. A five-level hierarchical regression model was used to determine the extent to which all these variables predicted depression scores, as measured by the Adolescent Depression Rating Scale. While personal, parental, school and community factors were all found to predict depression scores, the category, parental factors had the most impact. That was followed by school factors, community factors and finally personal characteristics. Multiple social and environmental factors were associated with the level of depression experienced by Colombian students. Background/Objectives: Low or moderate alcohol drinking may reduce the risk of depression, but depression may induce alcohol drinking. However, the bidirectional associations between alcohol drinking and depression were inconsistent, and many prior analyses were not properly conducted. This study explored the within-individual bidirectional associations between alcohol drinking and depressive symptoms under a causal analytic framework. Methods: Using data for the baby boomer cohorts (born between 1948 and 1965) from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), we employed the unit fixed-effect models with lagged measures to examine the within-individual bidirectional associations between the number of alcohol drinks per week and the changes in the eight-item Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression (CES-D) scores. Results: Among 11,057 participants at baseline, about 48% were drinkers and 19% had a CES-D ≥4, i.e., at a high risk of depression. Among male low/moderate drinkers, increasing alcohol drinking between consecutive visits was significantly associated with a decrease in depression scores after adjusting for prior alcohol drinking (−0.15 points per 7 drinks/week increase, p = 0.009). Conversely, among male drinkers and female heavy drinkers, increasing depression scores between visits increased alcohol drinking after adjusting for prior depression scores (ranging from 0.22 to 0.79 drinks/week per 1 point increase of depression score, all p values < 0.01). Conclusions: The bidirectional associations between alcohol drinking and depressive symptoms were evident only among male drinkers, and alcohol drinking should not be recommended as a solution for preventing or relieving depressive symptoms. Limitations: Measures of alcohol drinking and depression were coarse, and the study cohorts were limited to the US baby boomer generation. Purpose: The current study aimed to examine the short-term outcomes and multidimensional factors associated with preoperative sedentary behavior among Chinese older adults with gastric cancer. Method: An observational study was conducted among older adults with gastric cancer in a tertiary hospital in Jiangsu, China. A total of 393 participants were enrolled by convenience sampling. Sedentary behavior was assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form (IPAQ-SF). Logistic regression was applied to explore the relationship between preoperative sedentary behavior and short-term outcomes. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to determine the factors associated with participants' sedentary behavior. Results: Preoperative sedentary behavior was related to multiple outcomes, including total complications, prolonged length of stay, and increased hospitalization costs. Two or more comorbidities and depression were risk factors for sedentary behavior. High-density lipoprotein; female sex; and high school, middle school, and primary school and below educational levels were protective factors for sedentary behavior. Conclusion: Health care professionals need to simultaneously concentrate on multidimensional aspects linked to sedentary behavior to successfully administer behavioral interventions for enhancing older adults' overall prognosis. Background and Hypothesis Suicide is a leading cause of death in first-episode psychosis (FEP), with an elevated risk during the first year following illness onset. The association between negative symptoms and suicidality remains contentious. Some studies suggest that negative symptoms may be associated with lower suicidality, while others fail to find an association between the two. No previous studies have specifically investigated suicidality in Persistent Negative Symptoms (PNS) and its associated subgroups. Study Design In a large cohort of FEP patients (n  = 515) from an early intervention service, we investigated suicidality in those with PNS, secondary PNS (ie, sPNS; PNS with clinical-level positive, depressive, or extrapyramidal symptoms), and non-PNS (all other patients) over 24 months. Patients were categorized into PNS groups based on symptoms from month 6 to month 12, and suicidality was evaluated using the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS). Study Results Covarying for age and sex, we found that sPNS had higher suicidality relative to PNS and non-PNS throughout the 24-month period, but PNS and non-PNS did not differ. These differences were maintained after adjusting for depressive symptoms. Conclusion We observed that PNS did not significantly differ from non-PNS. However, we identified sPNS as a group with elevated suicidality above and beyond depression, suggesting that sPNS would benefit from targeted intervention and that PNS categorization identifies a subgroup for whom negative symptoms are not associated with lower suicidality. Background and Hypothesis Problematic internet use (PIU) is prevalent among adolescents. Past research suggested cross-sectional associations between PIU and psychotic experiences, but little information is available on the longitudinal association. We hypothesized that PIU in adolescence may be longitudinally associated with psychotic experiences, adjusting for confounders. Study Design We analyzed a random sample of adolescents in the Tokyo Teen Cohort to examine how PIU at ages 10 (2012–2015), 12 (2014–2017), and 16 (2019–2021) was associated with mental health issues at age 16. PIU was evaluated by the modified Compulsive Internet Use Scale, psychotic experiences by the Adolescent Psychotic-like Symptom Screener, and depression by the Short Mood and Feelings Questionnaire. We also examined the mediating role of social withdrawal. Study Results We analyzed 3171 adolescents; 151 reported psychotic experiences and 327 reported depression at age 16. Compared with the lowest tertile PIU group, the highest tertile PIU group at age 12 showed an increased adjusted risk of psychotic experiences (RD 3.3%, 95% CI 2.9%–3.7%; RR 1.65, 95% CI 1.55–1.73) and depression (RD 5.9%, 95% CI 5.5%–6.3%; RR 1.61, 95% CI 1.55–1.68) at age 16. PIU at age 16 showed analogous results, while PIU at age 10 suggested a smaller impact. Social withdrawal mediated 9.4%–29.0% of the association between PIU and psychotic experiences. Conclusions PIU is longitudinally associated with psychotic experiences and depression in adolescents. Objective: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is an inflammatory disorder characterized by painful, deep follicular nodules, abscesses, sinus tracts, and scarring, most commonly presenting in the inguinal, axillary, and anogenital regions. Methods: Systematic review. Results: This condition substantially decreases quality of life in affected individuals, resulting in higher rates of psychiatric disorders including depression, anxiety, suicidality, and substance use. The detrimental effects of HS are well documented by dermatologists, as individuals with HS make up a large proportion of the patients that they see daily. However, it is unclear whether psychiatrists are aware of the degree of psychosocial impairment present in HS patients. Conclusions: It is important that those in the field of psychiatry and behavioral medicine are aware of this condition and are comfortable managing it from a psychosocial perspective. This review chronicles the existing literature on the psychosocial effects of HS and assesses the extent to which dermatology journals review these effects in comparison to psychiatry or behavioral medicine journals. Background: Malnutrition, post-stroke depression (PSD), post-stroke anxiety (PSA), and post-stroke fatigue (PSF) in stroke survivors have complex relationships and are associated with adverse stroke outcomes. Aims: This research aims to explore the temporal and directional relationships between malnutrition, PSD, PSA, and PSF after stroke in older adults. Methods: Patients aged 65 years and older with their first ischemic stroke from two centers were selected and assessed at baseline, 3 months and 12 months. Malnutrition was evaluated using the Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) score, the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI), and the Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI). PSD, PSA and PSF were measured with 24-item Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD-24), 14-item Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA-14) and Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), respectively. The cross-lagged panel model (CLPM) was employed to investigate the temporal and directional relationships among these variables. Results: Among the 381 older patients included, 54.33%, 43.57%, and 7.87% were found to have malnutrition according to the CONUT, GNRI, and PNI scores, respectively. Significant bidirectional relationships were found between malnutrition and PSD, as well as between PSD, PSA, and PSF, but no significant bidirectional relationships between malnutrition, PSA and PSF were observed, irrespective of the malnutrition index used (CONUT, GNRI, or PNI). Conclusions: Nutritional status and post-stroke neuropsychiatric disorders in older stroke survivors are worthy of attention. Specifically, early malnutrition after stroke can predict later PSD and vice versa. PSD, PSA, and PSF are mutually predictable. Background: Families caring for patients with dementia are more vulnerable to depression. This cross-sectional study compared differences in socioeconomic status and gender related to depression among families of patients with dementia and identified associated factors. Methods: Inequality in depression according to household income level among families of patients with dementia was assessed using the Korean Community Health Survey, which included a sample of over 200,000 participants. Depression prevalence was assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and each independent variable was calculated. Significant differences were analyzed using the chi-square test. Complex-sample multivariate logistic regression was performed to examine the association between the income levels of families of patients with dementia and depression. Additionally, an analysis of depression, stratified by income level and gender, was conducted. Results: The prevalence of depression among families of patients with dementia was 4.41%. The odds ratio (OR) for depression among families of patients with dementia compared to the population of families without patients with dementia was 1.49. Depression was significantly more likely in families with lower income levels (adjusted OR [aOR]: 2.17, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.16–2.18). The magnitude of the impact of having a family member with dementia on depression varied by income level, being highest in the lowest income group (aOR: 1.64, 95% CI: 1.63–1.66) and lowest in the highest income group (aOR: 1.26, 95% CI: 1.24–1.27). Stratification by gender showed that both men and women in families of patients with dementia were more likely to experience depression than those in families without patients with dementia. Women had a higher likelihood of depression across all income levels than men; however, the impact of having a family member with dementia was more pronounced among men, especially those from lower-income groups. Conclusions: Our findings suggest the necessity for support policies tailored to low-income groups and women among families of patients with dementia. Purpose: This study aims to estimate (a) the relationship between disability acceptance and depressive symptoms, and (b) how the quality and quantity of social support might moderate the link between disability acceptance and depressive symptoms. Materials and methods: The data for this study included information from 5165 individuals with disability who participated in 3 waves of the Disability and Life Dynamic Panel spanning years 2018 to 2020. This study employed fixed effects models to estimate the association between disability acceptance and depressive symptoms. Interaction models were used to assess the moderating effects of both the quantity and quality of social support. Results: A lower acceptance of disability was positively associated with depressive symptoms. Moreover, both the quantity and quality of social support were associated with a decrease in depressive symptoms. Only the quality of social support played a significant role in moderating the relationship between disability acceptance and depressive symptoms. Conclusion: A lower acceptance of disability increases depressive symptoms in individuals with disabilities. This study underscores the need for interventions to focus on enhancing the quality of social support to mitigate the link between disability acceptance and depressive symptoms. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION: A lower acceptance of disability is positively associated with depressive symptoms among persons with disability. The association between lower disability acceptance and depressive symptoms attenuates as emotional support from family and friends increases. The number of family and friends does not significantly change the relationship between lower disability acceptance and depressive symptoms. The findings highlight the importance of interventions enhancing quality of social support in order to mitigate the association between disability acceptance and psychological health. Objectives: This study explores depression changes and influencing factors in middle-aged and older individuals, focusing on different cognitive function states. Methods: This cohort study uses panel data from seven waves of the nationally representative Taiwan Longitudinal Study on Aging (1996–2015) with 2344 participants aged 50 or above. Data analysis was conducted from 25 January 2023 to 4 May 2023. Results: Multivariate logistic regression analyzed three trajectories: maintained mood, progressive depression, and consistent depression. Protective factors for progressive depression included self-health perception, exercise, family satisfaction, and financial well being, while risk factors were chronic diseases, pain, substance use, and daily activity limitations. Cognitive function emerged as a significant protective factor, while pain exhibited the highest risk. In the cognitive dysfunction group, only social participation showed notable differences. Conclusion: Progressive and consistent depression in middle-aged and older people have aroused concern. In addition to necessary protection and risk factors, special attention should be paid to the risks posed by the level of pain. Background: Numerous studies have established a link between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and the development of depression in later life. However, the interactive relationships between ACEs, depression, and chronic diseases are still not well understood. In this study, the aim was to investigate the impact of ACEs on depressive trajectories among middle-aged and elderly individuals in China, as well as to examine the mediating roles of chronic diseases in this association. Methods: Data were drawn from 6921 participants aged 45 and older, using the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) data from 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2018, combined with the 2014 life history survey. Depressive symptom scores were assessed using the widely recognized CES-D-10 scale. The trajectories of depressive symptoms were identified via group-based trajectory modeling (GBTM). The association between ACEs and depressive trajectories was analyzed using multinomial logistic regression, and the KHB method was employed to test the mediating effects of different chronic diseases. Results: The age of the 6921 participants was 57.2 ± 8.0 years, with females comprising 53.9% and males 46.1%. We found that approximately 70% of Chinese middle-aged and older adults had experienced at least one ACE, and 4.8% had experienced four or more ACEs. The following four distinct trajectories of depressive symptoms were identified: continuing-low (N = 1897, 27.4%), continuing-low-to-middle (N = 2937, 42.4%), continuing-middle-to-high (N = 1649, 23.8%), and continuing-high (N = 438, 6.3%). Compared to individuals without ACEs, those with four or more ACEs had a significantly higher likelihood of following the continuing-low-to-middle trajectory (OR = 2.407, 95%CI: 1.633–3.550), the continuing-middle-to-high trajectory (OR = 7.458, 95%CI: 4.999–11.127), and the continuing-high trajectory (OR = 20.219, 95%CI: 12.115–33.744), rather than the continuing-low trajectory. Exposure to a greater number of ACEs was associated with an increased risk of following an adverse trajectory of depressive symptoms. Multiple chronic diseases significantly mediated the relationship between ACEs and depressive trajectories, with arthritis or rheumatism exerting the largest mediating effect, followed by digestive and respiratory diseases. Conclusions: These findings indicated that ACEs were associated with a higher risk of worse depressive symptom trajectories, with different chronic diseases mediating this relationship. Therefore, developing public measures to prevent ACEs can reduce the risk of chronic diseases and depression in middle-aged and elderly people. Background: Stress is significantly associated with depressed mood in nurses. However, it remains unclear whether the mechanisms by which two types of stress—childhood adversity and perceived stress—affect depression are identical. This study aims to investigate the relationship between stress (including childhood adversity and perceived stress) and depression, as well as the mediating role of coping profiles. Methods: A survey was conducted among 737 nurses in a tertiary hospital in China using the Revised Adverse Childhood Experiences Questionnaire, the Perceived Stress Scale, the Trait Coping Styles Questionnaire, and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. Latent profile analyses were performed using Mplus, and mediation analyses were conducted using R software. Results: Coping profiles were categorized into four groups: "Low Coping" (9.9%), "Inadequate Coping" (39.5%), "Emotional Suppression" (32.0%), and "Active Coping" (18.6%). Both childhood adversity and perceived stress were positively associated with depression levels in nurses. The "Emotional Suppression" profiles played a mediating role in the relationship between childhood adversity and depression. "Emotional Suppression" and "Low Coping" profiles played mediating roles in the relationship between perceived stress and depression. Conclusions: Stress and coping profiles are established risk factors of depression among nurses. Background: Resistant and refractory migraine are commonly encountered in specialized headache centers. Several comorbidities, mostly psychiatric conditions, have been linked to migraine worsening; however, there is little knowledge of the comorbidity profile of individuals with resistant and refractory migraine. Methods: REFINE is a prospective observational multicenter international study involving individuals with migraine from 15 headache centers. Participants were categorized into three groups based on the European Headache Federation criteria: non-resistant and non-refractory (NRNRM), resistant (ResM), and refractory (RefM). We explored the prevalence of 20 comorbidities at baseline in the three groups. Results: Of the 689 included patients (82.8% women), 262 (38.0%) had ResM, 73 (10.4%) had RefM and 354 (51.4%) NRNRM. A higher prevalence of psychiatric comorbidities, trigger points, temporomandibular joint disorders, thyroiditis, and cerebrovascular diseases was observed in the RefM group, followed by ResM and NRNRM. Multiple comorbidities were more common in the RefM group, followed by the ResM group and by the NRNRM group (41.6% vs. 24.5% vs. 14.1% respectively; p < 0.001). At the sensitivity analysis, exploring participants with chronic migraine, significant differences among the NRNRM, ResM, and RefM groups were found in the prevalence of anxiety (p < 0.001), asthma and rhinitis (p = 0.013), bipolar and other psychiatric disorders (p = 0.049), cerebrovascular diseases (p < 0.001), depression (p < 0.001), obesity (p = 0.002), thyroiditis (p < 0.001), and trigger points (p = 0.008). Conclusion: REFINE data indicate that individuals with ResM and RefM have a higher burden of comorbidities than those with NRNRM. It can be postulated that those comorbidities may have an impact on the progression of migraine from a form that is easy to treat to a form that is resistant or refractory to treatments. Longitudinal studies are needed to understand the direction of the association between ResM or RefM and those comorbidities and if proper treatment of comorbidities might help overcome treatment resistance or refractoriness. Emerging adulthood is an important developmental phase often accompanied by peaks in loneliness, social anxiety, and depression. However, knowledge is lacking on how the relationships between emotional loneliness, social loneliness, social isolation, social anxiety and depression evolve over time. Gaining insight in these temporal relations is crucial for our understanding of how these problems arise and maintain each other across time. Young adults from a university sample (N = 1,357; M = 23.60 years, SD = 6.30) filled out questionnaires on emotional and social loneliness, social isolation, depressive and social anxiety symptoms at three time points within a 3‐year period. Random intercept cross‐lagged panel models were used to disentangle reciprocal and prospective associations of loneliness subtypes, social isolation, depressive and social anxiety symptoms across time. Results showed that on the within‐person level, increases in emotional and social loneliness as well as social isolation predicted higher depression levels on later timepoints. Increases in depressive symptoms also predicted increases in subsequent social loneliness, but not in emotional loneliness. Finally, increases in depressive symptoms predicted increases in social isolation. There were no significant temporal relations between loneliness and social isolation on the one hand and social anxiety symptoms on the other hand. Social distancing imposed by COVID‐19 related government restrictions may have impacted the current results. The findings suggest that emotional and social loneliness precede development of depressive symptoms, which in turn precedes development of social loneliness and social isolation, indicating a potential vicious cycle of social loneliness, social isolation and depressive symptoms in emerging adulthood. Social anxiety did not precede nor follow loneliness, depressive symptoms, or social isolation. The current study sheds more light on the temporal order of loneliness and psychopathological symptoms and hereby assists in identifying times where prevention and intervention efforts may be especially helpful to counter development of depression and loneliness. Objective: In a preregistered study, we examined whether worries about COVID‐19 are simultaneously linked with enhanced well‐being through social interaction and with reduced well‐being through depression symptoms. Method: In August 2020, census‐matched participants from high‐ and low‐prevalence regions in the United States and Italy (N = 857) completed assessments of COVID‐19 worry, social interaction, depression symptoms, and well‐being. Results: Worries about COVID‐19 predicted both more social interaction and more depression (ps < 0.001). In multiple mediational analyses, an adaptive pathway of COVID‐19 worry through social interaction was associated with higher well‐being, whereas a maladaptive pathway through depression symptoms was associated with lower well‐being. Further, a comparison of high and low COVID‐19 prevalence regions replicated the mediational findings for social interaction, providing evidence against reverse causation and common method variance. Conclusion: Findings suggest that normative worries about acute stressors may both benefit and undermine well‐being, depending on their impact on social behavior or depression symptoms. International literature emphasizes that numerous factors are associated with depressive symptoms in older adults. This study aimed to examine the factors influencing depressive symptoms in individuals aged 60 years and above during the COVID-19 period in Turkey by establishing a model of inter-factor analysis. The participant group consisted of 394 individuals aged 60 years (M = 69.2 S.D = 6.7). Participant group was selected who were continuing their education at the Rejuvenation Campus established to serve those aged 60 and above at Akdeniz University. Data collection tools included a Personal Information Form, The Beck Depression Inventory and The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. The analysis of the data obtained in the study was conducted using Pearson's and Spearman's correlation, along with the moderated mediation methods. This study examined the relationship between factors, such as COVID-19 fear, perceived social support, educational status, number of children, and perceived social exclusion and/or stigmatization by society due to being an older adult on depressive symptoms. According to the findings of the study, fear of COVID-19 has a direct and positive relationship on depressive symptoms. Additionally, it has been determined that the fear of COVID-19 has a direct and negative relationship on perceived social support. Apart from these findings, it is understood that perceived social support has a preventive mediating role on the relationship of COVID-19 fear on depressive symptoms. Finally, it was seen that self-report based sociodemographic control variables, negative relationship with depressive symptoms and positive relationship with perceived social support. The Life Attitudes Schedule-Short Form (LAS-SF) is a measure of suicide proneness featuring various conceptual models. We tested four competing LAS-SF factor structures, as well as construct validity with mental health and suicide metrics. Community dwelling adults (N = 488) completed an online cross-sectional survey. Results supported a four factor (i.e., death-related, health-related, injury-related, and self-related subscales) LAS-SF structure with one higher order factor. Death-related, injury-related, and self-related subscales demonstrated moderate positive associations with mental health and suicidal ideation. Death-related and self-related subscales showed links with suicidal ideation, as well as suicide and depression risk (controlling for other factors). This study is important in highlighting suicide proneness theory may need to be refined. LAS-SF uses include possible risk screening in clinical settings and future focus on the psychological death aspects of the LAS-SF in prospective research. Police violence exposure among Latinx adults in the United States is increasingly concerning due to its prevalence and associated risks for adverse mental, behavioral, and physical health outcomes. This integrative review appraised studies published from 2003 to 2023 that examine the relationship between police violence exposure and negative health outcomes in Latinx adults. Using structured search terms, articles were identified in APA PsycInfo and PubMed databases, supplemented by a gray literature search and citation mining. Eleven studies met the inclusion criteria. Findings indicate a significant positive association between police violence exposure and adverse mental (n = 9), behavioral (n = 2), and physical (n = 1) health outcomes. The results underscore the mental, behavioral, and physical health consequences of police violence exposure for Latinx adults. Given the increasing Latinx population in the United States, further research is needed to better understand this relationship and inform interventions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Schizophrenia is highly comorbid with obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD); both conditions share numerous pathophysiological etiologies. We, thus, examined the risk of mental disorders in the parents of probands with schizophrenia, OCD, or both conditions. Between 2001 and 2011, we enrolled a nationwide cohort of 69,813 patients with schizophrenia, OCD, or both. The control cohort included 698,130 individuals matched for demographics. Poisson regression models were employed to examine the risk of six mental disorders in their parents, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depressive disorder, OCD, alcohol use disorder, and substance use disorder. We stratified patients into schizophrenia-only, OCD-only, and dual-diagnosis groups, and the dual-diagnosis group was further divided into schizophrenia-first, OCD-first, and simultaneously diagnosed groups. Compared with controls, the schizophrenia, OCD, and dual-diagnosis groups had higher risks for the six mental disorders in their parents (range of odds ratio [OR] 1.50–7.83). The sub-analysis of the dual-diagnosis group showed that the schizophrenia-first, OCD-first, and simultaneously diagnosed groups had higher odds for schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depressive disorder, and OCD (range of OR 1.64–6.45) in their parents than the control group; the simultaneously diagnosed and OCD-first diagnosed groups had a higher odds of parental substance use disorder, while the schizophrenia-first diagnosed group had a higher odds of parental alcohol use disorder. The interrelationship between OCD and schizophrenia is linked to bipolar disorder, depressive disorder, alcohol use disorder, and substance use disorder. Background: Our aim was to determine the association between diet quality and depression incidence in the population-based REGICOR cohort study, Catalonia, Spain. Methods: Prospective observational study using participants' baseline (2003–2006), follow-up (2007–2013) and clinical records data. Five diet quality scores were derived from a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) at baseline: the relative Mediterranean Diet Score (rMED), the Modified Mediterranean Diet Score (ModMDS), a Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) score, a Healthful Plant-based Diet Index (HPDI) and the World Health Organization Healthy Diet Indicator (WHO-HDI). Participants using pharmacological antidepressant treatment were excluded as a proxy for presence of depression at baseline. At follow-up, the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) was applied to assess depressive symptoms (≥ 10 defining depressive disorder). A secondary outcome was depression diagnosis assessed through clinical records. Logistic regression and Cox proportional hazards models were used. Results: Main analysis included 3046 adults (50.3% women) with a mean age of 54.7 (SD = 11.6) years. After 6-years follow-up, 184 (6.04%) cases of depressive disorder were identified. There was 16% lower odds of depressive disorder per 1SD increase of rMED (OR = 0.84; 95%CI = 0.71–0.98). Secondary outcome analysis (n = 4789) identified 261 (5.45%) incident cases of clinical depression diagnosis over 12 years follow-up, and 19% lower risk of clinical depression was observed with the WHO-HDI (HR = 0.81; 95%CI = 0.70–0.93). Adjusting for BMI did not attenuate the findings. Conclusions: A significant inverse association between diet quality and depression incidence was found in this population-based cohort study, independent of sociodemographic, health and lifestyle.
