Background: Algorithmic decision-making (ADM) utilises algorithms to collect and process data and develop models to make or support decisions. Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have led to the development of support systems that can be superior to medical professionals without AI support in certain tasks. However, whether patients can benefit from this remains unclear. The aim of this systematic review is to assess the current evidence on patient-relevant benefits and harms, such as improved survival rates and reduced treatment-related complications, when healthcare professionals use ADM systems (developed using or working with AI) compared to healthcare professionals without AI-related ADM (standard care)—regardless of the clinical issues. Methods: Following the PRISMA statement, MEDLINE and PubMed (via PubMed), Embase (via Elsevier) and IEEE Xplore will be searched using English free text terms in title/abstract, Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms and Embase Subject Headings (Emtree fields). Additional studies will be identified by contacting authors of included studies and through reference lists of included studies. Grey literature searches will be conducted in Google Scholar. Risk of bias will be assessed by using Cochrane's RoB 2 for randomised trials and ROBINS-I for non-randomised trials. Transparent reporting of the included studies will be assessed using the CONSORT-AI extension statement. Two researchers will screen, assess and extract from the studies independently, with a third in case of conflicts that cannot be resolved by discussion. Discussion: It is expected that there will be a substantial shortage of suitable studies that compare healthcare professionals with and without ADM systems concerning patient-relevant endpoints. This can be attributed to the prioritisation of technical quality criteria and, in some cases, clinical parameters over patient-relevant endpoints in the development of study designs. Furthermore, it is anticipated that a significant portion of the identified studies will exhibit relatively poor methodological quality and provide only limited generalisable results. Objective: To systematically investigate and analyse the aggregated data from recent studies to provide a quantitative synthesis for a conservative approach to the management of high‐grade kidney trauma, as accumulating evidence supports the favourable outcomes of a conservative approach. Methods: A comprehensive search was performed using databases, including PubMed, EBSCO, ProQuest, Google Scholar, and Cochrane Library, to identify studies relevant to high‐grade renal trauma in both adult and paediatric populations. The compare review focused on comparing conservative management interventions, such as observation, rest, resuscitation, transfusion, symptomatic management, and angioembolisation, with operative management interventions. Search strategies incorporated specific medical subject headings and keywords related to conservative management, kidney trauma, mortality, and renal preservation. Random and fixed‐effect meta‐analyses were conducted to estimate the rates of nephrectomy and mortality, respectively. Results: A total of 36 and 29 studies were included for qualitative and quantitative synthesis, respectively. The aggregated data showed a cumulative risk difference of 0.52 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.38–0.66, P < 0.001), indicating a higher likelihood of nephrectomy in cases where operative management was used instead of conservative management. In terms of mortality, conservative management demonstrated a lower risk difference of 0.09 (95% CI 0.05–0.13, P < 0.001). Conclusion: The results indicate that opting for conservative management in cases of high‐grade renal trauma, particularly for haemodynamically stable patients, presents a lower risk of mortality and reduced probability of requiring nephrectomy when compared to operative management. Background: There is a lack of robust evidence to recommend the use of perioperative ureteric catheterisation or stenting in complex gynaecological surgery. Objectives: To evaluate the evidence on the benefits and risks of perioperative ureteric catheterisation or stenting in complex gynaecological surgery. Search strategy: A literature search was performed in CINAHL, the Cochrane Library, Embase and MEDLINE, from 1946 to January 2024, using a combination of keywords and Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terminology. Selection criteria: Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and observational studies were included. Data collection and analysis: Meta‐analysis of the RCTs and observational studies were performed separately. Cochrane RevMan 6.5.1 was used to undertake meta‐analysis. Risk ratios with 95% CIs were calculated for the outcome measures. Main results: Ten studies were included: three RCTs and seven observational studies, comprising 8661 patients. The three RCTs, comprising a total of 3277 patients, showed no difference in the risk of immediate complications in the form of ureteric injury between the ureteric stent and the control groups (RR 0.9, 95% CI 0.49–1.65). The observational studies included 5384 patients. Four studies that explored the ureteric injury as an outcome did not show any difference between the two groups (RR 0.76, 95% CI 0.27–2.16). One case–control study with 862 participants found that the rate of ureteric injury was higher in the non‐stented group, although this was observed in only three patients. The risk of urinary tract infection (UTI) was increased in the stent group, although not with statistical significance (RR 1.84, 95% CI 0.47–7.17). There was no significant difference in the risk of ureteric fistulae (RR 1.91, 95% CI 0.62–5.83), although the number of studies was limited. Violence against women is defined as any act resulting from gender relations that cause death or physical, sexual, psychological, property and moral harm. Comprehensive care requires professionals understanding the support network to guide and refer women victims of violence to services and to value complaints/anxieties. The objective of this study was to identify the scientific production of comprehensive care for women victims of violence. This is an integrative literature review. Data collection was performed via a paired and independent search by two researchers in the Scopus, PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science, LILACS, BDENF and SciELO databases between January and February 2023. After applying the eligibility criteria and descriptors in health sciences and medical subject headings, ten articles were retrieved. IRAMUTEQ software was used for data analyses. There are great challenges in implementing comprehensive care, and violence against women, as a serious social problem, demands health, education, social assistance and public security policies. The comprehensive actions taken in the care of women victims of violence demonstrate a strong link with the practices of reception and humanization, in addition to an interdisciplinary and intersectoral scope. The Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) thesaurus is the controlled vocabulary used to index articles in MEDLINE. MeSH were mainly manually selected until June 2022 when an automated algorithm, the Medical Text Indexer (MTI) automated was fully implemented. A selection of automated indexed articles is then reviewed (curated) by human indexers to ensure the quality of the process. To describe the association of MEDLINE indexing methods (i.e., manual, automated, and automated + curated) on the MeSH assignment in pharmacy practice journals compared with medical journals. Original research articles published between 2016 and 2023 in two groups of journals (i.e., the Big-five general medicine and three pharmacy practice journals) were selected from PubMed using journal-specific search strategies. Metadata of the articles, including MeSH terms and indexing method, was extracted. A list of pharmacy-specific MeSH terms had been compiled from previously published studies, and their presence in pharmacy practice journal records was investigated. Using bivariate and multivariate analyses, as well as effect size measures, the number of MeSH per article was compared between journal groups, geographic origin of the journal, and indexing method. A total of 8479 original research articles was retrieved: 6254 from the medical journals and 2225 from pharmacy practice journals. The number of articles indexed by the various methods was disproportionate; 77.8 % of medical and 50.5 % of pharmacy manually indexed. Among those indexed using the automated system, 51.1 % medical and 10.9 % pharmacy practice articles were then curated to ensure the indexing quality. Number of MeSH per article varied among the three indexing methods for medical and pharmacy journals, with 15.5 vs. 13.0 in manually indexed, 9.4 vs. 7.4 in automated indexed, and 12.1 vs. 7.8 in automated and then curated, respectively. Multivariate analysis showed significant effect of indexing method and journal group in the number of MeSH attributed, but not the geographical origin of the journal. Articles indexed using automated MTI have less MeSH than manually indexed articles. Introduction and purpose Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy represents a technology designed to enhance tissue repair by locally administering one's own bioactive agents, aiming to influence physiological processes like inflammation, angiogenesis, and extracellular matrix synthesis. Recently, the use of PRP therapy has become a subject of discussion in the orthopedic field. This review comprehensively examines the mechanisms, contemporary applications, clinical evidence, safety aspects, and potential future advancements of PRP in orthopedic treatment. Research has documented the efficacy of PRP injections in achieving full regeneration and enabling a comeback to competitive sports. PRP injections could serve as a viable alternative treatment for individuals with lateral tendonitis when compared to surgery. Further research investigating the impact of PRP on the bone healing process following a fracture is warranted. Materials and methods The methodology for conducting literature search involved utilizing medical subject headings terms to explore PubMed. Search terms included: "plasma-rich therapy", "tendinopathy", "injury" " articular cartilage ", "bone fracture " Conclusions Research at different evidence levels has shown that PRP is safe and has beneficial effects in above uses. Due to the autologous nature of the therapy, side effects are minimal. In the majority of cases, PRP therapy alleviates pain sensations in both short- and long-term observations, facilitating a faster return to daily functionality. However, additional randomized, controlled clinical trials are anticipated to be conducted in the future. Background and Purpose Methods Results Conclusions Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is heavily relied upon for the diagnosis and monitoring of multiple sclerosis (MS), a chronic, demyelinating disease of the central nervous system. Serum biomarkers may serve as an accessible tool for increasing sensitivity, improving accessibility, corroborating symptoms, and providing additional data to guide clinical management. This scoping review investigates the current understanding of how the serum biomarker glial fibrillary acidic protein (sGFAP) relates to brain MRI metrics.We adhered to the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology for scoping reviews and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta‐Analyses guidelines. The databases Medline (Ovid), Embase (Ovid), CINAHL (Ebsco), and Web of Science (University of British Columbia institutional access) were searched on August 24, 2023 using a combination of medical subject headings and keyword terms for the topic of serum biomarkers in MS.A total of 9880 articles were retrieved in total of which 6271 unique titles and abstracts were screened. Twelve of the 259 resultant papers contained sGFAP data and proceeded to extraction. It was found that lesion MRI metrics generally had a positive relationship with sGFAP, while gray matter and white matter metrics, including normal‐appearing white matter, were related negatively or not at all.These results highlight that while sGFAP may not be specific for MS, it may have utility for increasing sensitivity in postdiagnosis monitoring of MS progression. AbstractBackgroundAimsMethodsResultsConclusionsPeople experiencing mental illness receive physical healthcare from nurses in a variety of settings including acute inpatient, secure extended care, forensic, and community services. While nurse-led clinical practice addressing sub-optimal consumer physical health is salient, a detailed understanding and description of the contribution by nurses to physical health interventions in people experiencing mental illness is not clearly articulated in the literature.The aim of this integrative review is to describe the state of knowledge on nurse-led physical health intervention for consumers, focusing on nursing roles, nursing assessment, and intervention settings.A systematic search of six databases using Medical Subject Headings from 2001 and 2022 inclusive was conducted. The Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT) was utilised for quality appraisal.Seventy-four studies were identified as “nurse-led”. Interventions were most common among community settings (n = 34, 46%). Nurses performed varied roles, often concurrently, including the collection of 341 physical health outcomes, and multiple roles with 225 distinct nursing actions identified across the included studies. A nurse as lead author was common among the included studies (n = 46, 62%). However, nurses were not always recognised for their efforts or contributions in authorship.There is potential gap in role recognition that should be considered when designing and reporting nurse-led physical health interventions. Background: Tandem spinal stenosis (TSS) is a condition characterized by the narrowing of the spinal canal in multiple segments of the spine. Predominantly observed in the cervical and lumbar regions, TSS also manifests in the conjunction of the cervical and thoracic spine. The simultaneous occurrence of cervical and thoracic spinal stenosis engenders intricate symptoms, potentially leading to missed and delayed diagnosis. Furthermore, the presence of tandem cervical and thoracic stenosis (TCTS) introduces a notable impact on the decision-making calculus of surgeons when contemplating either one-staged or two-staged surgery. Currently, there is no agreed-upon strategy for surgical intervention of TCTS in the literature. Methods: Medical databases in English (Pubmed, Web of Science, Embase, the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews) and Chinese (CNKI, Wanfang Data, VIP CMJD) were searched using Medical Subject Heading queries for the terms "tandem cervical and thoracic stenosis", "cervical stenosis AND thoracic stenosis", "tandem spinal stenosis" and "concomitant spinal stenosis" from January 1980 to March 2023. We included studies involving adult individuals with TCTS. Articles exclusively focused on disorders within a single spine region or devoid of any mention of spinal disorders were excluded. Results: Initially, a total of 1625 literatures underwent consideration for inclusion in the study. Following the elimination of the duplicates through the utilization of EndNote, and a meticulous screening process involving scrutiny of abstracts and full-texts, 23 clinical studies met the predefined inclusion criteria. Of these, 2 studies solely focused on missed diagnosis, 19 studies exclusively discussed surgical strategy for TCTS, and 2 articles evaluated both surgical strategy and missed diagnosis. Conclusion: Our study revealed a missed diagnosis rate of 7.2% in TCTS, with the thoracic stenosis emerging as the predominant area susceptible to oversight. Therefore, the meticulous identification of TCTS assumes paramount significance as the inaugural step in its effective management. While both one-staged and two-staged surgeries have exhibited efficacy in addressing TCTS, the selection of the optimal surgical plan should be contingent upon the individualized circumstances of the patients. Objective: There is ongoing debate regarding the association between epilepsy and obesity. Thus, the aim of this study was to examine the correlation between epilepsy and obesity. Method: This study adhered to the PRISMA guidelines for systematic reviews and meta-analyses. On The Prospero website, this study has been successfully registered (CRD42023439530), searching electronic databases from the Cochr-ane Library, PubMed, Web of Sciences and Embase until February 10, 2024.The search keywords included "Epilepsy", "Obesity", "Case-Control Studies", "cohort studies", "Randomized Controlled Trial" and "Cross-Sectional Studies". The medical subject headings(MeSH) of PubMed was utilized to search for relevant subject words and free words, and a comprehensive search strategy was developed. Two reviewers conducted article screening, data extraction and bias risk assessment in strict accordance with the predefined criteria for including and excluding studies. The predefined inclusion criteria were as follows: 1) Inclusion of case-control, cohort, randomized controlled trial, and cross-sectional studies; 2) Segregation of subjects into epileptic patients and healthy controls; 3)Obesity as the outcome measure; 4) Availability of comprehensive data; 5) Publication in English. The exclusion criteria were as follows: 1) Exclusion of animal experiments, reviews, and other types of studies; 2) Absence of a healthy control group; 3) Incomplete data; 4) Unextractable or unconvertible data; 5) Low quality, indicated by an Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality(AHRQ) score of 5 or lower,or a Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) score less than 3. The subjects included in the study included adults and children, and the diagnostic criteria for obesity were used at different ages. In this study, obesity was defined as having a body mass index(BMI) of 25 kg/m2 or higher in adults and being above the 85th percentile of BMI for age in children. We used obesity as an outcome measure for meta-analysis using RevMan, version 5.3. Results: A meta-analysis was conducted on a total of 17 clinical studies, which involved 5329 patients with epilepsy and 480837 healthy controls. These studies were selected from a pool of 1497 articles obtained from four electronic databases mentioned earlier. Duplicate studies were removed based on the search strategies employed. No significant heterogeneity was observed in the outcome measure of obesity in epileptic patients compared with healthy controls(p = 0.01,I2 = 49%). Therefore, a fixed effects model was utilized in this study. The findings revealed a significant difference in obesity prevalence between patients with epilepsy and healthy controls(OR = 1.28, 95%CI: 1.20–1.38, p<0.01). Conclusion: The results of this meta-analysis indicate that epilepsy patients are more prone to obesity than healthy people, so we need to pay attention to the problem of post-epilepsy obesity clinically. Currently, there is a scarcity of largescale prospective studies. Purpose: Strabismus is a common ocular condition requiring precise quantification of gaze deviation and qualification of strabismus category. Telemedicine refers to the use of technology to remotely diagnose and treat medical conditions. This narrative review aimed to assess the efficacy of a variety of telemedicine modalities for the assessment of strabismus. A secondary objective was to quantify overall accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of automated methods using meta-analysis of available data. Methods: A literature search was conducted using the Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Library data libraries. Keywords, including "strabismus," "phoria," "telemed*," and "telehealth," were used to locate relevant studies, with Medical Subject Headings terms, free text, and synonyms. No year restrictions were applied. Studies not in English were excluded. Risk of bias was assessed using the QUADAS-2 tool. Results: Thirty-four studies were included. All outcomes relating to accuracy and reliability of telemedicine versus a reference standard were extracted, as well as qualitative observations. High sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and agreement were consistently shown across studies. Meta-analysis of two subsets featuring automated methods, for which relevant data were available, revealed a pooled accuracy of 0.877 (0.806–0.949), sensitivity of 0.856 (0.805–0.907), and specificity of 0.900 (0.845–0.954). Subcategories "remote standard assessment," "digital image analysis," "wearable devices," "mobile health (mHealth)," and "artificial intelligence" were independently examined. Conclusions: The majority of systems achieved parity with standard physician assessment, with the added benefit of eliminating subjectivity. Meta-analysis results suggest potential introduction of remote automated assessment where conventional assessment is unavailable, although accuracy of current technologies remains limited compared to in-person examination. Telemedicine modalities described offer convenience for patients, shorter examination times, and the potential to go beyond in-person assessments. Purpose: To assess the developmental competence of oocytes matured following rescue in vitro maturation (IVM). Methods: PubMed, EmBASE, and SCOPUS were systematically searched for peer-reviewed original papers using relevant keywords and Medical Subject Heading terms. Study quality was assessed using the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale. Odds ratios with a 95% confidence interval were calculated by applying a random effects model. The primary outcomes were fertilization and blastulation rates. Secondary outcomes included abnormal fertilization, cleavage, euploidy, clinical pregnancy, and live-birth rates. Result: Twenty-four studies were included in the meta-analysis. The oocytes matured following rescue IVM showed significantly reduced fertilization, cleavage, blastulation, and clinical pregnancy rates compared to sibling in vivo–matured oocytes. No significant differences were found for the euploidy and live-birth rates in euploid blastocyst transfer. In poor responders, a reduced fertilization rate was observed using in vitro–matured GV but not with in vitro–matured MI. A reduced cleavage rate in MI matured overnight compared to < 6 incubation hours was found. Conclusion: Our results showed compromised developmental competence in oocytes matured following rescue IVM. However, in poor responders, rescue IVM could maximize the efficiency of the treatment. People who are immune-deficient/disordered (IDP) are underrepresented in COVID-19 studies. Specifically, there is limited research on post–SARS-CoV-2 infection outcomes, including viral persistence and long-term sequelae in these populations. This review aimed to examine the published literature on the occurrence of persistent SARS-CoV-2 positivity, relapse, reinfections, variant coinfection, and post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 in IDP. Although the available literature largely centred on those with secondary immunodeficiencies, studies on people with inborn errors of immunity are also included. PubMed was searched using medical subject headings terms to identify relevant articles from the last 4 years. Articles on primary and secondary immunodeficiencies were chosen, and a special emphasis was placed on including articles that studied people with inborn errors of immunity. The absence of extensive cohort studies including these individuals has limited most articles in this review to case reports, whereas the articles focusing on secondary immunodeficiencies include larger cohort, case-control, and cross-sectional studies. Articles focusing solely on HIV/AIDS were excluded. Scientific literature suggests that IDP of any age are more likely to experience persistent SARS-CoV-2 infections. Although adult IDP exhibits a higher rate of post-acute sequelae of COVID-19, milder COVID-19 infections in children may reduce their risk of experiencing post-acute sequelae of COVID-19. Reinfections and coinfections may occur at a slightly higher rate in IDP than in the general population. Although IDP experience increased viral persistence and inter-host evolution, it is unlikely that enough evidence can be generated at the population-level to support or refute the hypothesis that infections in IDP are significantly more likely to result in variants of concern than infections in the general population. Additional research on the relationship between viral persistence and the rate of long-term sequelae in IDP could inform the understanding of the immune response to SARS-CoV-2 in IDP and the general population. Objective: This study evaluates the research developments concerning Rehmanniae Radix in ovarian hypofunction diseases. It explores the processing methods of Rehmanniae Radix, the variations in its compounds before and after processing, the mechanism of Rehmanniae Radix and its active compounds in improving ovarian function, and the advancements in clinical applications of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) compound that include Rehmanniae Radix. Methods: Comprehensive literature search was conducted using databases such as China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), China Science and Technology Journal Database, National Science and Technology Library, the Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China, Pubmed, and the Web of Science Database. The search utilized the following Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) and keywords: "Rehmanniae Radix," "Drying Rehmannia Root," "Rehmannia glutinosa," "Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata," "Traditional Chinese Medicine Processing," "Pharmacological Effects," "Ovarian Aging," "Diminished ovarian reserve," "Premature ovarian insufficiency," "Premature Ovarian Failure," "Ovarian hypofunction diseases". Results: The ancient Chinese medical books document various processing techniques for Rehmanniae Radix. Contemporary research has identified changes in its compounds processing and the resultant diverse therapeutic effects. When processed into Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, it is noted for its ability to invigorate the kidney. TCM compound containing Rehmanniae Radix is frequently used to treat ovarian hypofunction diseases, demonstrating significant clinical effectiveness. The key changes in its compounds processing include cyclic dilute ether terpene glycosides, phenylethanol glycosides, sugars, and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. Its pharmacological action is primarily linked to the improvement of granulosa cell proliferation, antioxidative and anti-aging properties, and modulation of the immune and inflammatory microenvironment. Furthermore, Rehmanniae Radix also offers therapeutic benefits for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, osteoporosis and cognitive dysfunction caused by low estrogen levels. Thereby Rehmanniae Radix mitigates both the short-term and long-term health risks associated with ovarian hypofunction diseases. Conclusion: Processed Rehmanniae Radix has shown potential to improve ovarian function, and its compound prescriptions have a definite effect on ovarian dysfunction diseases. Therefore Rehmanniae Radix was garnering interest for both basic and clinical research, with promising application prospects as a future therapeutic agent for ovarian hypofunction diseases. Introduction Material and Methods Results Conclusions Placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) is an increasingly commonly reported condition due to the continuous increase in the rate of cesarean deliveries (CD) worldwide; however, the prenatal screening for pregnant patients at risk of PAS at birth remains limited, in particular when imaging expertise is not available.Two major electronic databases (MEDLINE and Embase) were searched electronically for articles published in English between October 1992 and January 2023 using combinations of the relevant medical subject heading terms and keywords. Two independent reviewers selected observational studies that provided data on one or more measurement of maternal blood‐specific biomarker(s) during pregnancies with PAS at birth. PRISMA Extension for Scoping Review (PRISMA‐ScR) was used to extract data and report results.Of the 441 reviewed articles, 29 met the inclusion criteria reporting on 34 different biomarkers. 14 studies were retrospective and 15 prospective overall including 18 251 participants. Six studies had a cohort design and the remaining a case–control design. Wide clinical heterogeneity was found in the included studies. OBJECTIVES: This investigation aims to analyze the characteristics and development of literature and advocate to include "Somatopsychic" as a Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) term. BACKGROUND: The interplay between physiological processes and psychological conditions, commonly referred to as "Somatopsychic," has garnered increasin g attention in scientific literature over the years. METHODS: Somatopsychic-related research from the Scopus database using (Text word) and (MeSH) features. Publications were collected on Mar 22, 2023. The publication output was then analyzed using the R package's bibliometrics (Biblioshiny) and VOSviewer. RESULTS: In this study, search results for "somatopsychic" using (MeSH) resulted in a predictable return of 0 articles. Meanwhile, based on a search with (Text word), this study retrieved 306 documents for an unlimited period (and yielded published articles between 1913 and 2022). The analysis also revealed that 3,176 authors contributed to publications related to somatopsychic, with the United States ranking first in terms of authorship. In addition, the study presented a co-word network that illustrated frequent co-occurrence of particular keywords within somatopsychic research. CONCLUSION: This study reveals that somatopsychic-related publications are becoming increasingly prevalent. Adding somatopsychic as a dedicated term to the MeSH thesaurus of the National Library of Medicine would assist in indexing and retrieving the most pertinent literature on this topic (Tab. 3, Fig. 5, Ref. 51). For medical fraternity, health system and policymakers to undertake effective countermeasures, a comprehensive assessment of the prevalence of anxiety among older adults is required; hence, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis using data pooled from surveys across the country. The search strategy was developed using medical subject headings (MeSH) terms and free-text keywords. We searched PubMed and Scopus for articles to report the prevalence of anxiety among older adults. The appraisal tool for cross-sectional studies was used for quality assessment. Prevalence from different studies was pooled together using the inverse variance heterogeneity method. Sensitivity analyses were performed to assess the impact of included studies' methodological quality on pooled results and to investigate potential causes of heterogeneity. Twenty-three studies were included in this systematic review. The overall pooled estimate of the prevalence of anxiety in older adults was 18.7% (95% CI: 2.4, 38.8). The studies had a high degree of heterogeneity. Publication bias was assessed using a Doi plot which showed an luis furuya-kanamori (LFK) index of 1.21 indicating minor asymmetry. Like other parts of the world, India has witnessed a rise in the number of elderly due to lower fertility rates, higher life expectancies and a shift in illness patterns from communicable to non-communicable. Introduction: The increasing prevalence of diabetes necessitates sustainable care and preventative strategies for patients. Plantbased diets have emerged as a promising intervention for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. However, the sustainability of such diets remains a subject of debate. Aim: To investigate the impact of plant-based diets on treating type 2 diabetes mellitus and assess their sustainability. Materials and Methods: Systematic searches were performed using the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases for studies published between 2013 and 2023 following Preferred Reporting Items for Systemic Reviews and Meta Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines. The Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms used in the search were “type-2 diabetes,” “diabetes mellitus,” “plant-based diets,” “vegan diet,” and “vegetarian diets.” The search yielded 227 studies, of which eight were included based on inclusion criteria. Covidence software was used to analyse the selected studies, focusing on the long-term effects of plant-based diets on diabetes. Results: The studies included in the review followed 12 weeks of intervention with plant-based diets, examining Glycated Haemoglobin (HbA1c) levels, insulin sensitivity, lipid profile, weight changes, and Body Mass Index (BMI). The observations included a significant reduction of approximately 0.4% in HbA1c levels and approximately 1.04 kg/m² in BMI, along with a significant weight loss of approximately 2-6 kg. While there was no significant reduction observed in the lipid profile. Conclusion: Plant-based diets with a 12-week consumption period show positive cardiometabolic profiles due to antioxidants, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. The article presents the history of MeSH, the information and retrieval query language in Poland, in the context of cooperation between academic medical libraries. It also discusses the role of the Central Medical Library in the implementation of medical subject headings. Particular attention was focused on an attempt to explain the reason for the functioning of two Polish-language versions of the file, which are translations of the American version of MeSH’s Medical Subject Headings run by U.S. National Library of Medicine.

ObjectiveIn 2002, the National Library of Medicine (NLM) introduced semi-automated indexing of Medline using the Medical Text Indexer (MTI). In 2021, NLM announced that it would fully automate its indexing in Medline with an improved MTI by mid-2022. This pilot study examines indexing using a sample of records in Medline from 2000, and how an early, public version of MTI's outputs compares to records created by human indexers.MethodsThis pilot study examines twenty Medline records from 2000, a year before the MTI was introduced as a MeSH term recommender. We identified twenty higher- and lower-impact biomedical journals based on Journal Impact Factor (JIF) and examined the indexing of papers by feeding their PubMed records into the Interactive MTI tool.ResultsIn the sample, we found key differences between automated and human-indexed Medline records: MTI assigned more terms and used them more accurately for citations in the higher JIF group, and MTI tended to rank the Male check tag more highly than the Female check tag and to omit Aged check tags. Sometimes MTI chose more specific terms than human indexers but was inconsistent in applying specificity principles.ConclusionNLM's transition to fully automated indexing of the biomedical literature could introduce or perpetuate inconsistencies and biases in Medline. Librarians and searchers should assess changes to index terms, and their impact on PubMed's mapping features for a range of topics. Future research should evaluate automated indexing as it pertains to finding clinical information effectively, and in performing systematic searches.

Introduction and purpose In recent years, there has been notable progress in the role of light-emitting technologies, including lasers and other energy-based devices, across various medical disciplines. Dermatology stands out as one of the prominent fields where laser treatments have gained significant popularity. In the clinical setting, a variety of laser types are utilized. A fundamental aspect of ensuring the safe use of laser devices involves comprehending their mechanisms at the tissue level. This knowledge enables practitioners to attain the desired outcomes effectively while minimizing the risk of complications. Lasers have demonstrated effectiveness in treating cutaneous vascular conditions because of their capacity to selectively target intravascular oxyhemoglobin. Rosacea, juvenile hemangioma, and port wine stains are among the vascular skin conditions for which laser therapy has shown notable success. Laser therapy is employed in treating hypertrophic scars, keloids, and acne scars because it facilitates the restructuring of the skin's architecture at the scar site, with the goal of minimizing its size and visibility. Laser therapy stands as the gold standard for removing tattoos. Materials and methods The methodology for conducting literature search involved utilizing medical subject headings terms to explore PubMed. Objectives: The incidence of oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) is increasing. This study used bibliometric analysis and topic modeling to explore the research trends and advancements in this disease over the past 10  years, providing valuable insights to guide future investigations. Methods: 7,355 English articles from 2013 to 2022 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection for bibliometric analysis. Topic modeling was applied to 1,681 articles from high-impact journals, followed by an assessment of topic significance ranking (TSR). Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms were extracted using R and Python, followed by an analysis of the terms associated with each topic and on an annual basis. Additionally, genes were extracted and the number of genes appearing each year and the newly emerged genes were counted. Results: The bibliometric analysis suggested that the United States and several European countries hold pivotal positions in research. Current research is focused on refining treatments, staging and stratification. Topic modeling revealed 12 topics, emphasizing human papillomavirus (HPV) and side effect reduction. MeSH analysis revealed a growing emphasis on prognosis and quality of life. No new MeSH terms emerged after 2018, suggesting that the existing terms have covered most of the core concepts within the field of oropharyngeal cancers. Gene analysis identified TP53 and EGFR as the most extensively studied genes, with no novel genes discovered after 2019. However, CD69 and CXCL9 emerged as new genes of interest in 2019, reflecting recent research trends and directions. Conclusion: HPV-positive oropharyngeal cancer research, particularly treatment de-escalation, has gained significant attention. However, there are still challenges in diagnosis and treatment that need to be addressed. PubChem (https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov) is a public chemical information resource containing more than 100 million unique chemical structures. One of the most requested tasks in PubChem and other chemical databases is to search chemicals by name (also commonly called a "chemical synonym"). PubChem performs this task by looking up chemical synonym-structure associations provided by individual depositors to PubChem. In addition, these synonyms are used for many purposes, including creating links between chemicals and PubMed articles (using Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms). However, these depositor-provided name-structure associations are subject to substantial discrepancies within and between depositors, making it difficult to unambiguously map a chemical name to a specific chemical structure. The present paper describes PubChem's crowdsourcing-based synonym filtering strategy, which resolves inter- and intra-depositor discrepancies in synonym-structure associations as well as in the chemical-MeSH associations. The PubChem synonym filtering process was developed based on the analysis of four crowd-voting strategies, which differ in the consistency threshold value employed (60% vs 70%) and how to resolve intra-depositor discrepancies (a single vote vs. multiple votes per depositor) prior to inter-depositor crowd-voting. The agreement of voting was determined at six levels of chemical equivalency, which considers varying isotopic composition, stereochemistry, and connectivity of chemical structures and their primary components. While all four strategies showed comparable results, Strategy I (one vote per depositor with a 60% consistency threshold) resulted in the most synonyms assigned to a single chemical structure as well as the most synonym-structure associations disambiguated at the six chemical equivalency contexts. Based on the results of this study, Strategy I was implemented in PubChem's filtering process that cleans up synonym-structure associations as well as chemical-MeSH associations. This consistency-based filtering process is designed to look for a consensus in name-structure associations but cannot attest to their correctness. As a result, it can fail to recognize correct name-structure associations (or incorrect ones), for example, when a synonym is provided by only one depositor or when many contributors are incorrect. Objectives: The use of probiotics could promote the balance of the subgingival microbiota to contribute to periodontal health. This study aimed to identify the potential of bacteria commonly associated with healthy periodontal tissues as probiotic candidates. Material and methods: A systematic review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines using the PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, ProQuest, and Ovid databases as well as the combination of Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) and non-MeSH terms. Based on the selection criteria, original studies published in English and identifying the microorganisms present in the periodontium of healthy individuals and patients with periodontitis using the high-throughput 16S ribosomal gene sequencing technique were included. Results: Out of 659 articles, 12 met the criteria for this review. These articles were published from 2012 to 2020 and mainly originated from the United States, China, and Spain. Most of these studies reported adequate criteria for selecting participants, using standardized clinical criteria, and compliance with quality based on the tools used. In periodontal healthy tissue were identified species like Actinomyces viscosus, Actinomyces naeslundii, Haemophilus parainfluenzae, Rothia dentocariosa, Streptococcus sanguinis, Streptococcus mitis, Streptococcus oralis, Streptococcus gordonii, Streptococcus intermedius, and Prevotella nigrescens which have recognized strains with a capacity to inhibit periodontopathogens. Conclusions: S. sanguinis, S. oralis, S. mitis, and S. gordonii are among the bacterial species proposed as potential probiotics because some strains can inhibit periodontopathogens and have been reported as safe for humans. Bitemark analysis involves the examination of both patterned injuries and contextual circumstances, combining morphological and positional data. Considering the uniqueness of human dentition, bitemarks caused by teeth on skin or impressions on flexible surfaces could assist in human identification. Aims: to investigate the available literature systematically and evaluate the scientific evidence published over the past decade concerning the potential application of bitemark analysis in forensic identification. Methods: Two researchers meticulously searched electronic databases from January 2012 to December 2023, including Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library. Adhering to the PRISMA statement guidelines, this review employed appropriate medical subject headings (MeSHs) and free-text synonyms. Strict inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied during article retrieval. Results: The findings yielded controversial outcomes. Approximately two-thirds of the articles concluded that bitemark analysis is useful in forensic identification, while the remaining articles did not report statistically significant outcomes and cautioned against relying solely on bitemark analysis for identification. Conclusions: The authors assert that bitemark analysis can be a reliable and complementary method for forensic identification, contingent upon the establishment and adoption of a universally accepted global protocol for data collection, processing, and interpretation. OBJECTIVES: Critically ill patients with tuberculosis carry high mortality. Identification of factors associated with mortality in critically ill tuberculosis patients may enable focused treatment. DATA SOURCES: An extensive literature search of PubMed (MEDLINE), Embase, the Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar was performed using Medical Subject Headings terms "tuberculosis," "critical care," "critical care outcome," and "ICU." We aimed to identify factors affecting mortality in critically ill tuberculosis patients. STUDY SELECTION: All the studies comparing factors affecting mortality between survivors and nonsurvivors in critically ill tuberculosis patients were included. The database search yielded a total of 3017 records, of which 17 studies were included in the meta-analysis. DATA EXTRACTION: Data were collected including the name of the author, year and country of publication, duration of the study, number of patients studied, type of tuberculosis, patient demography, smoking history, laboratory parameters, comorbidities, the requirement for mechanical ventilation, duration of ventilation, ICU and hospital length of stay (LOS), type of lung involvement, complications, and outcomes. DATA SYNTHESIS: The major factors that contributed to mortality in critically ill tuberculosis patients were age, platelet count, albumin, C-reactive protein (CRP), the requirement and duration of invasive mechanical ventilation, Pao2/Fio2 ratio, presence of acute respiratory distress syndrome, shock, hospital-acquired infections, renal replacement therapy, and ICU and hospital LOS. CONCLUSIONS: Patient age, platelet count, albumin and CRP levels, the requirement and duration of invasive mechanical ventilation, Pao2/Fio2 ratio, hospitalacquired infections, renal replacement therapy, and ICU LOS were variables associated with mortality. Background Diverticulosis is a normal anatomical variant of the colon present in more than 70% of the westernized population over the age of 80. Approximately 3% will develop diverticulitis in their lifetime. Many patients present emergently, suffer high morbidity rates and require substantial healthcare resources. Diverticulosis is the most common finding at colonoscopy and has the potential for causing a significant morbidity rate and burden on healthcare. There is a need to better understand the aetiology and pathogenesis of diverticular disease. Research suggests a genetic susceptibility of 40–50% in the formation of diverticular disease. The aim of this review is to present the hypothesized functional effects of the identified gene loci and environmental factors. Methods A systematic literature review was performed using PubMed, MEDLINE and Embase. Medical subject headings terms used were: 'diverticular disease, diverticulosis, diverticulitis, genomics, genetics and epigenetics'. A review of grey literature identified environmental factors. Results Of 995 articles identified, 59 articles met the inclusion criteria. Age, obesity and smoking are strongly associated environmental risk factors. Intrinsic factors of the colonic wall are associated with the presence of diverticula. Genetic pathways of interest and environmental risk factors were identified. The COLQ, FAM155A, PHGR1, ARHGAP15, S100A10 , and TNFSF15 genes are the strongest candidates for further research. Conclusion There is increasing evidence to support the role of genomics in the spectrum of diverticular disease. This review article assesses the effectiveness and limitations of strategies to reduce falls among hospitalized older adults with frailty and dementia. It explores the efficacy of existing fall prevention strategies for a cohort that is acutely susceptible to falls and fall-related consequences. A systematic literature search was conducted across MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, and PsycINFO, employing Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) to identify studies on fall prevention strategies in hospitalized older adults with both dementia and frailty published from 2013 to 2023. The initial 643 records were distilled to eight articles, with Structured Interdisciplinary Bedside Rounds (SIBR) emerging as a notable intervention. SIBR demonstrated a reduction in falls by fostering improved interdisciplinary communication and care planning. However, a decline in family engagement during consecutive sessions suggests a need for strategies to sustain familial involvement. The findings advocate for patient-centered interventions that address the cognitive and functional challenges faced by this cohort of older adults. Introduction: There is a substantial and progressive association between chronic pain (CP) and living with overweight or obesity. The relationship between obesity and CP is intricate and complex, with obesity being associated with increased pain-related disability, pain intensity, reduction in physical functioning and poorer psychological well-being. A Qualitative Evidence Synthesis (QES) provides an opportunity to better understand and reveal key areas within the patient experience of these complex interactions to inform best practice and future intervention design. Aims: The aim of this QES is to methodically and systematically review and synthesise the qualitative literature reporting on the personal experiences of people who are both living with obesity (PwO) and chronic pain. Methods: The phenomenon of interest of this QES is the lived experiences of PwO and CP. The following research question was developed using a modified Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome and Study type (PICOS) framework: "What are the lived experiences of people living with obesity and chronic pain?". One review author will conduct a systematic search based on keywords and Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms for finding relevant articles in five peer-review databases, from inception to the date of searching. Two review authors will independently apply inclusion and exclusion criteria and screen articles in a two-stage process. The methodological quality of included studies will be assessed using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) tool and data will be extracted using a customised template. We will undertake a thematic synthesis of qualitative data from included studies and report our findings narratively. Confidence in the findings will be assessed based on the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation Confidence in Evidence from Reviews of Qualitative Research (GRADE-CER-Qual) approach. Findings and dissemination: This study will follow the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Protocols (PRISMA) and Enhancing Transparency in Reporting the Synthesis of Qualitative Research (ENTREQ) guidelines. It is anticipated that the findings of the review will facilitate a deep and broad understanding of the complex interactions between CP and obesity and will help inform best practice and future intervention design. Purpose: As a first step towards developing a core outcome set (COS) for sciatic neuropathy, the goal of the current study was to perform a systematic review of the literature to identify outcome measures that have been previously reported in studies on sciatic neuropathy. Methods: A systematic review of the literature from 2000–2024 was performed utilizing PubMed and Medical Subject Headings (MeSH). Identified articles were screened according to study inclusion/exclusion criteria. Outcome measures reported in each included study were recorded and categorized into motor, sensory, pain, patient-reported outcomes, electrodiagnostic outcomes, imaging outcomes, and composite outcomes. Descriptive statistics were performed. Results: A total of 1586 articles were initially identified, and 31 articles met criteria for inclusion and underwent analysis. The most common outcome domain was pain. A pain outcome was reported in 17 (63%) studies. A motor outcome was reported in 10 (37%) studies; 6 (22%) reported a sensory outcome; 1 (4%) reported a composite outcome; 4 (15%) reported an electrodiagnostic outcome; 5 (19%) reported a patient-reported outcome; 3 (11%) reported an imaging outcome. Across the included studies, 21 unique outcomes were reported. Conclusions: We have identified the outcome measures that have previously been utilized in studies on sciatic neuropathy. Previously used outcome measures fell into seven domains: motor outcomes, sensory outcomes, pain outcomes, patient-reported outcomes, electrodiagnostic outcomes, imaging outcomes, and composite outcomes. Whether ketamine used in the perioperative period reduces the risk of postoperative depressive symptoms remains uncertain. We conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the clinical efficacy of ketamine in adult surgical patients. Two investigators independently systematically searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), Medline, Web of Science, and PsycINFO databases using a combination of relevant Medical Subject Headings terms and free-text keywords from database inception through May 24, 2023. 29 studies encompassing 5327 patients were included. The pooled analysis demonstrated that the ketamine group had no significantly reduced incidence of postoperative depressive mood compared with the control group, with trial sequential analysis (TSA) inconclusive. However, postoperative depression scale scores were significantly decreased in the ketamine group. Most randomized controlled trials of surgical patients have included depression scale scores as the primary outcome. The incidence of postoperative depressive has been assessed as a secondary outcome or has not been assessed. In addition, non-uniform assessment scales have introduced greater heterogeneity. More rigorous methods and higher-quality evidence for further research are needed to better understand the effects of ketamine on perioperative depression in surgical anesthesia. Current evidence suggests that ketamine cannot significantly decrease the incidence of postoperative depressive mood in adult surgical patients. Here, we show that post-transcriptional modifications, like RNA editing, may also contribute. RNA editing enzymes APOBEC3A and APOBEC3G catalyze the deamination of cytosine to uracil. RNAsee (RNA site editing evaluation) is a computational tool developed to predict the cytosines edited by these enzymes. We find that 4.5% of non-synonymous DNA single nucleotide polymorphisms that result in cytosine to uracil changes in RNA are probable sites for APOBEC3A/G RNA editing; the variant proteins created by such polymorphisms may also result from transient RNA editing. These polymorphisms are associated with over 20% of Medical Subject Headings across ten categories of disease, including nutritional and metabolic, neoplastic, cardiovascular, and nervous system diseases. Because RNA editing is transient and not organism-wide, future work is necessary to confirm the extent and effects of such editing in humans. A survey of known human DNA editing sites with an RNA editing site prediction algorithm suggests APOBEC-mediated RNA editing may produce some of the same protein variants, with the possibility of affecting multiple areas of health. Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease characterized by persistent hyperglycemia associated with a lack of insulin production or insulin resistance. In diabetic patients, the capacity for healing is generally decreased, leading to chronic wounds. One of the most common treatments for chronic wounds is skin dressings, which serve as protection from infection, reduce pain levels, and stimulate tissue healing. Furthermore, electrospinning is one of the most effective techniques used for manufacturing skin dressings. Objective: The purpose of this study was to perform a systematic review of the literature to examine the effects of electrospun skin dressings from different sources in the process of healing skin wounds using in vivo experiments in diabetic rats. Methods: The search was carried out according to the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA), and the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) descriptors were defined as "wound dressing," "diabetes," "in vivo," and "electrospun." A total of 14 articles were retrieved from PubMed and Scopus databases. Results: The results were based mainly on histological analysis and macroscopic evaluation, demonstrating moderate evidence synthesis for all experimental studies, showing a positive effect of electrospun skin dressings for diabetic wound treatment. Conclusion: This review confirms the significant benefits of using electrospun skin dressings for skin repair and regeneration. All the inks used were demonstrated to be suitable for dressing manufacturing. Background/Objectives: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) has a significant impact on the quality of life of symptomatic patients. In patients manifesting lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), prostatic arterial embolization (PAE) has become a topic of interest in recent years. The purpose of this systematic review is to analyze and review techniques and clinical outcomes of patients who underwent endovascular treatment of BPH, with a special focus on the comparison of surgical and endovascular procedures. Methods: Through the major scientific databases, 1225 articles were selected from the initial research utilizing specific keywords and medical subject headings. Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria established for selecting relevant studies for our purposes, the systematic analysis of the literature was conducted on a total of seven articles. Results: We collected data on 718 male patients (408 patients underwent PAE and 310 received TURP). The technical success rate varied from 86% to 100% for TAE and was 100% for TURP. During a 12-month follow-up period, both PAE and TURP were comparable on the reduction in IPSS and QoL questionnaire, while TURP showed significant improvements in Qmax and in the reduction in prostate volume. Length and cost of hospitalization were lower for PAE. Complication and adverse events rates were higher in the TURP group rather than in the PAE group (60.6% vs. 35.5%). Conclusions: Prostatic artery embolization represents an emerging minimally invasive procedure for BPH. According to previously released clinical studies, quality-of-life and urological symptom scores of the PAE group were comparable to those of the TURP group. To adapt to the changing conditions and respond to the needs of society, health systems need continuous changes and reforms in their structure and performance, and subsequently, they need to evaluate their indicators. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the impact of the health system transformation plan (HTP) on the functional indicators and efficiency of hospitals in a country in the Middle East region (Iran). A systematic literature review was conducted according to the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines using the online databases Medline, EMBASE, Scopus, Pubmed, SID, Magiran, and Medlib from 2013 to 2022 using a combination of medical subject heading terms ('health system transformation plan [Mesh] OR 'health reform [Mesh] OR implementation of the health transformation plan [Mesh] ''AND ('performance indicators' [Mesh]) ''AND ('Iran' [Mesh]). STATA version 11 were used for data analysis. A total of 20 reports (cross-sectional, cohort, and case-control) were identified for this study. The results showed that after the HTP, the indices of bed occupancy rate and bed turnover rate have increased and the index of bed turnover distance has decreased. On the other hand, after the implementation of this plan in hospitals, the average of patients' length of stay has increased. The implementation of HTP has improved most of the performance indicators of hospitals and has generally led to an increase in the productivity of hospitals compared to that before the implementation of the plan. However, efforts to strengthen weak performance indicators and identify effective indicators along with adopting correct policies to increase the overall efficiency of hospitals can be effective in improving HTP. Introduction: Yoga takes an approach that addresses the mental and spiritual aspects, making it a powerful tool for treating medical conditions that often do not respond well to traditional methods. Researchers have a growing interest in studying the effects of yoga on chronic health issues and mental wellbeing. Aim: To investigate and summarise the impact of yoga on premenstrual syndrome. Materials and Methods: For this systematic review, international databases (Google Scholar, PubMed, EBSCOhost, and ScienceDirect) were systematically searched from the inception of the databases until January 31, 2024. The keywords "premenstrual syndrome" and "yoga" were employed, and "Medical Subject Headings" (MeSH) were utilised for these keywords. Two researchers independently screened articles, and consensus for inclusion was achieved through mutual discussions. All studies assessing the effect of yoga on premenstrual syndrome were extracted from the selected studies without restricting to the form or type of yogic intervention. Results: A total of 35 studies on the subject were scrutinised, and 12 publications meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria were incorporated in the study for evaluation. All studies indicated that yoga is effective in reducing at least one or some of the physical symptoms, such as bloating, pain, fatigue, breast tenderness, appetite changes, and psychological changes like irritability, stress, anxiety, depression, loss of interest, attention, control, and arousal during premenstrual syndrome. There is a lack of clarity regarding the effect of yoga on many other symptoms of premenstrual syndrome. Background: The efficacy of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been studied extensively. The cathodic (c‐tDCS), anodic (a‐tDCS), and bihemispheric stimulation have demonstrated efficacy in the management of the paretic upper extremity (UE) after stroke, but it has not been determined which stimulation polarity has, so far, shown the best results. Objective: To evaluate the available evidence to determine which tDCS polarity has the best results in improving UE motor function after stroke. Methods: PubMed, PEDro, Web of Science, EMBASE, and SCOPUS databases were searched. Different Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms were combined for the search strategy, to cover all studies that performed a comparison between different tDCS configurations focused on UE motor rehabilitation in people with lived experience of stroke. Results: Fifteen studies remained for qualitative analysis and 12 for quantitative analysis. Non‐significant differences with a 95% confidence interval (CI) were obtained for c‐tDCS versus a‐tDCS (g = 0.10, 95% CI = −0.13; 0.33, p =.39, N = 292), for a‐tDCS versus bihemispheric (g = 0.02, 95% CI = −0.46; 0.42, p =.93, N = 81), and for c‐tDCS versus bihemispheric (g = 0.09, 95% CI = −0.84;.66, p =.73, N = 100). No significant differences between the subgroups of the meta‐analysis were found. Conclusions: The results of the present meta‐analysis showed no evidence that a stimulation polarity is superior to the others in the rehabilitation of UE motor function after stroke. Background: The endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal approach (EETA) has revolutionized skull-base surgery; however, it is associated with a steep learning curve (LC), necessitating additional attention from surgeons to ensure patient safety and surgical efficacy. The current literature is constrained by the small sample sizes of studies and their observational nature. This systematic review aims to evaluate the literature and identify strengths and weaknesses related to the assessment of EETA-LC. Methods: A systematic review was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines. PubMed and Google Scholar were searched for clinical studies on EETA-LC using detailed search strategies, including pertinent keywords and Medical Subject Headings. The selection criteria included studies comparing the outcomes of skull-base surgeries involving pure EETA in the early and late stages of surgeons' experience, studies that assessed the learning curve of at least one surgical parameter, and articles published in English. Results: The systematic review identified 34 studies encompassing 5,648 patients published between 2002 and 2022, focusing on the EETA learning curve. Most studies were retrospective cohort designs (88%). Various patient assortment methods were noted, including group-based and case-based analyses. Statistical analyses included descriptive and comparative methods, along with regression analyses and curve modeling techniques. Pituitary adenoma (PA) being the most studied pathology (82%). Among the evaluated variables, improvements in outcomes across variables like EC, OT, postoperative CSF leak, and GTR. Overcoming the initial EETA learning curve was associated with sustained outcome improvements, with a median estimated case requirement of 32, ranging from 9 to 120 cases. These findings underscore the complexity of EETA-LC assessment and the importance of sustained outcome improvement as a marker of proficiency. Conclusions: The review highlights the complexity of assessing the learning curve in EETA and underscores the need for standardized reporting and prospective studies to enhance the reliability of findings and guide clinical practice effectively. Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is currently the primary cause of hair loss in both men and women. It is characterized by a progressive thinning of the hair follicles due to a shortening of the anagen phase of the hair growth cycle. The pathophysiology mainly involves the accumulation of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a metabolite of testosterone, and a chronic perifollicular inflammatory process. The objective of this study is to evaluate, through a literature review, the validity, protocols, and efficacy of the use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in the treatment of patients with AGA. It is a review conducted in the first half of 2024, using the PubMed and BVS databases, employing Descritores em Ciência e Saúde (alopecia, plasma rico em plaquetas, terapia) and Medical Subject Headings (alopecia, platelet-rich plasma, therapy). Inclusion criteria consisted of: a) articles published between 2022 and 2024; b) written in Portuguese or English; c) full-text articles available for free; d) research focused on PRP therapy for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia in men. Twelve articles were included in the synthesis. Overall, the articles indicated that despite the need for standardized protocols, the use of PRP as a treatment for AGA shows promising results in the current context. The therapy demonstrated improvements in hair density and patient satisfaction, suggesting its potential as a viable option for managing androgenetic alopecia. Besides being a safe option with minimal side effects, its combination with other therapies, such as minoxidil, has brought beneficial outcomes for patients with this condition. Purpose: Current evidence indicates that humans and animals are at increased risk of multiple health challenges due to microplastic (MP) profusion. However, mitigation is constrained by inadequate scientific data, further aggravated by the lack of evidence in many African countries. This review therefore synthesized evidence on the current extent of MP pollution in Africa and the analytical techniques for reporting. Design/methodology/approach: A literature search was undertaken in research databases. Medical subject headings (MeSH) terms and keywords were used in the literature search. The authors found 38 studies from 10 countries that met the inclusion criteria. Findings: Marine organisms had MPs prevalence ranging from 19% to 100%, whereas sediments and water samples had between 77 and 100%. The most common and dominant polymers included polypropylene and polyethylene. Practical implications: This review shows that most studies still use methods that are prone to human errors. Therefore, the concentration of MPs is likely underestimated, even though the authors' prevalence evaluations show MPs are still largely pervasive across multiple environmental matrices. Also, the study reveals significant spatial disparity in MP research across the African continent, showing the need for further research in other African countries. Originality/value: Even though some reviews have assessed MPs pollution in Africa, they have not evaluated sample prevalence, which is necessary to understand not only concentration but pervasiveness across the continent. Obesity is the modern world's current epidemic, with substantial health and economic impact. This study aimed to provide a narrative overview of the past, currently available, and future treatment options that offer therapeutic and preventive advantages for obesity management. Historically, rimonabant, and lorcaserin, were approved and used for managing non-syndromic obesity. Currently, orlistat, naltrexone/bupropion, glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1 RA), and a few promising therapeutic agents are under investigation, including retatrutide, cagrilintide and orforglipron, which show promising weight reduction effects. We have developed a search string of the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), including the terms GLP-1 RAs, obesity, and weight loss. This string was then used to perform a systematic literature search in the database including PubMed, EMBASE, MEDLINE, and Scopus up to January 31st, 2024. Managing obesity often requires medical interventions, particularly in cases of severe obesity or obesity-related comorbidities. Thus, it is important to approach obesity management holistically, considering individual needs and circumstances. Background: Conotruncal congenital heart defects (CTD) are a subset of congenital heart diseases (CHD) that involve structural anomalies of the right, left, or both cardiac outflow tracts. CHD is caused by multifactorial inheritance and changes in the genes or chromosomes. Recently, CHD was found to be due to epigenetic alterations, which are a combination of genetic and other environmental factors. Epigenetics is the study of how a gene's function changes as a result of environmental and behavioral influences. These causative factors can indirectly cause CHD by altering the DNA through epigenetic modifications. This is a protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis that aims to explore whether the strength of association between various epigenetic changes and CTD types varies by race. Furthermore, to determine and compare the changes in gene expression of each mutation. Methods: Our protocol follows the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Protocol (PRISMA-P) guidelines. A comprehensive pre-search has been developed in PubMed and PubMed's Medical Subject Headings (MeSH). The final search will be performed in June 2023 in PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, CIANHL, and PsycInfo, without restrictions on publication years. The Covidence systematic review software will be used for blinded screening and selection. Conflicts will be resolved by a third, independent reviewer. The risk of bias in selected studies will be assessed using the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) Quality Assessment Tool for Observational Cohort and Cross-Sectional Studies. The data to be extracted will cover basic information on the included studies, study sample size, number of patients with various types of epigenetic changes, number of patients with various CTD types, measures of association and their 95% confidence interval between each epigenetic change and each CTD. The protocol has been registered with the International Prospero Register of Systematic Review (PROSPERO) [CRD42023377597]. Discussion: To the best of our knowledge, this protocol outlines the first systematic review and meta-analysis of the epigenetics of CTD. There is a growing body of evidence on epigenetics and its indirect involvement in disease by altering the DNA through epigenetic modifications in the genes associated with the causative factors for CHD. Background: Nerve blocks are widely used in various surgeries to alleviate postoperative pain and promote recovery. However, the impact of nerve block on delirium remains contentious. This study aims to systematically evaluate the influence of Thoracic Paravertebral Nerve Block (TPVB) on the incidence of delirium in patients post Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS). Methods: We conducted a systematic search of PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Scopus databases in June 2023. The search strategy combined free-text and Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms, including perioperative cognitive dysfunction, delirium, postoperative cognitive dysfunction, paravertebral nerve block, thoracic surgery, lung surgery, pulmonary surgery, and esophageal/esophagus surgery. We utilized a random effects model for the analysis and synthesis of effect sizes. Results: We included a total of 9 RCTs involving 1,123 participants in our study. In VATS, TPVB significantly reduced the incidence of delirium on postoperative day three (log(OR): -0.62, 95% CI [-1.05, -0.18], p = 0.01, I2 = 0.00%) and postoperative day seven (log(OR): -0.94, 95% CI [-1.39, -0.49], p < 0.001, I2 = 0.00%). Additionally, our study indicates the effectiveness of TPVB in postoperative pain relief (g: -0.82, 95% CI [-1.15, -0.49], p < 0.001, I2 = 72.60%). Background: Professionals are reluctant to make use of machine learning results for tasks like curriculum development if they do not understand how the results were generated and what they mean. Visualizations of peer reviewed medical literature can summarize enormous amounts of information but are difficult to interpret. This article reports the validation of the meaning of a self-organizing map derived from the Medline/PubMed index of peer reviewed medical literature by its capacity to coherently summarize the references of a core psychiatric textbook. Methods: Reference lists from ten editions of Kaplan and Sadock's Comprehensive Textbook of Psychiatry were projected onto a self-organizing map trained on Medical Subject Headings annotating the complete set of peer reviewed medical research articles indexed in the Medline/PubMed database (MedSOM). K-means clustering was applied to references from every edition to examine the ability of the self-organizing map to coherently summarize the knowledge contained within the textbook. Results: MedSOM coherently clustered references into six psychiatric knowledge domains across ten editions (1967–2017). Clustering occurred at the abstract level of broad psychiatric practice including General/adult psychiatry, Child psychiatry, and Administrative psychiatry. Conclusions: The uptake of visualizations of published medical literature by medical experts for purposes like curriculum development depends upon validation of the meaning of the visualizations. The current research demonstrates that a self-organizing map (MedSOM) can validate the stability and coherence of the references used to support the knowledge claims of a standard psychiatric textbook, linking the products of machine learning to a widely accepted standard of knowledge. Spinal phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor (PMT) is a rare disorder but can be cured once the diagnosis is clear and a complete removal by surgery is performed. To the best of our knowledge, only 22 cases in the spine have been described, and we report a case with the largest number of spinal segments (T12-L5) affected among spine PMT cases. A comprehensive literature search was performed until May 23, 2023, following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews guidelines. Studies were chosen through relevant PubMed, Web of Science, and EMBASE searches to prioritize obtaining the largest studies. The Medical Subject Headings and Boolean operators employed for this search were ("PMT" or "TIO" or "Tumor-induced osteomalacia" or "phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor") and ("spine" or "spinal"). Two researchers (L.S.Z. and D.B.C) independently reviewed and evaluated the included articles. Any differing opinions were discussed until a consensus was reached. A total of 18 studies were included. A case report is also presented. We report a case of spinal PMT. The full text of the relevant articles was construed. A total of 18 studies were reviewed and consolidated. These articles are roughly divided into the following 5 subcategories: 1) clinical features and baseline distribution, 2) laboratory and imaging findings, 3) pathological manifestations, and 4) surgical methods and treatment options. Spinal PMT is very rare with a high rate of misdiagnosis and debilitating complications, so it is of significance to increase awareness of the disease among spine surgeons consulted by patients with spinal PMT. 68Ga-DOTATOC-PET/CT shows very high sensitivity to the spinal PMT but there is no way to exactly determine the location of the tumor. PMT has unique immunohistochemical characteristics and malignant PMT is rare. Once diagnosed, complete surgical excision is the recommended treatment. Background COVID-19, the widely recognized and highly contagious respiratory tract infection, has had a substantial impact on the field of dermatology since its emergence in 2019. SARS-CoV-2, the causative virus of COVID-19, is classified as an RNA virus. Various skin-related symptoms have been reported in patients with COVID-19, most notably the distinctive purple–red acral rash resembling chilblain lesions, commonly referred to as 'COVID toe'; similarly, skin-related symptoms have been observed in connection with other RNA viruses. Objectives To explore the relationship between RNA viruses and their associated vascular cutaneous manifestations vs. those observed in patients infected with SARS-CoV-2. Methods A systematic literature review was conducted using PubMed and medical subject heading terms related to RNA viruses and related skin manifestations. Results In total, 3994 patients diagnosed with COVID-19 presenting with skin rashes were included. Chilblain-like lesions were most frequently observed (30.2%), followed by erythematous maculopapular/morbilliform rashes (9.1%) and urticarial rashes (4.7%). Of 8362 patients diagnosed with RNA viruses, more than half of the skin findings reported were erythematous/maculopapular/morbilliform rashes (52.3%), followed by unspecified (11.3%) and purpuric rashes (10.6%). Conclusions When comparing RNA viral infections with COVID-19 infection, we observed similarities in the reported skin manifestations and their presumed pathways, with many implicated in the proinflammatory response. Owing to the wide range of cutaneous symptoms associated with RNA viruses and our currently limited understanding of the underlying mechanisms, additional research is warranted to investigate the pathology behind viral-induced skin lesions.
