Conferences enable rapid information sharing and networking that are vital to career development within academic communities. Addressing diverse attendee needs is challenging and getting it wrong wastes resources and dampens enthusiasm for the field. This study explores whether, and how, motivations for attendance can be grouped in relation to preferences to offer guidance to organizers and attendees. A pragmatic constructivist case study approach using mixed methods was adopted. Semi-structured interviews completed with key informants underwent thematic analysis. Survey results outlining attendees' perspectives underwent cluster and factor analysis. Stakeholder interviews (n = 13) suggested attendees could be grouped by motivations predictable from level of specialisation in a field and past engagement with conferences. From n = 1229 returned questionnaires, motivations were clustered into three factors: learning, personal and social. Three groups of attendees were identified. Group 1 (n = 500; 40.7%) was motivated by all factors. Group 2 (n = 345; 28.1%) was mainly motivated by the learning factor. Group 3 (n = 188; 15.3%) scored the social factor highest for in-person conferences and the learning factor highest for virtual meetings. All three groups expressed a preference for hybrid conferences in the future. This study indicates that medical conference attendees can be clustered based on their learning, personal and social motivations for attendance. The taxonomy enables organizers to tailor conference formats with guidance on how to utilize hybrid conferences, thereby enabling better catering to attendees' desires for knowledge gain relative to networking. The essay aims to analyse the impact of the digital turn on tourism history in Italy by adopting a multifaceted approach and answering the basic research question of whether or not Italian tourism history has fully experienced the digital turn and what the consequences have been in terms of methods and contents. Our starting point is that the transformation we are facing is comparable to the invention of the printing press and the mass production and reproduction of books and documents (Dittmar, 2011); in the words of Ash et al., “digital pervasively inflects thought, scholarship, and practice” (2016, p. 25). As noticed for other disciplines, this turn implies not only the use of digital devices, software packages, and digitalised archives, but also new conceptualisations, narratives, and logic. To see how the digital turn has impacted tourism history in Italy, we will briefly describe the state of the art of digital history (section 1), discuss the relationship between the digitalisation of archives and new publications (section 2), and finally, we will provide some examples of the innovative use of digital technology for the history of tourism (section 3). Some concluding remarks and future perspectives for tourism history will be discussed in section 4.

This review summarizes the abstracts sent to the 2023 Congress of the National Society of Medical Oncology. Thus, of the 49 summaries sent, 26 were case presentations, 12 were reviews, and 11 were original works. The general impression is that there are too few summaries for approximately 700 oncological doctors, including resident doctors. Also, the original works are too few and some are described briefly, unable to be appreciated in depth, so without being able to make references to their scientific value. I exemplified several works with formally good summaries. I did not assess the quality of the studies and whether they were well conducted, because a summary does not allow this. For those interested, I published the criteria of an ideal summary. The conclusion is that there must be a school for those who want to publish and a lot of practice that can only be obtained by publishing in “less pretentious” journals in order to achieve performance in the field. During scientific conferences, Twitter can facilitate the communication between audience and speakers present at the venue and can extend the reach of a conference to participants following along from home. To examine whether Twitter activity can serve as a surrogate parameter for attendance at the RSNA conferences in 2019 and in 2020, and to characterize changes in topics discussed due to the virtual character of the 2020 RSNA conference. Methods The Twitter API and R Studio were used to analyze the absolute number and frequency of tweets, retweets, and conference-related hashtags during the 2019 and 2020 RSNA conference. Topics of discussion were compared across years by visualizing networks of co-occurring hashtags. Results There was a 46% decrease in total tweets and a 39% decrease in individual Twitter users in 2020, mirroring a 43% decrease in registered attendees during the virtual conference. Hashtags related to social initiatives in radiology (e.g., “#radxx” and “#womeninradiology” for promoting women’s empowerment in radiology or “#pinksocks,” “#weareradiology” and “#diversityisgenius” for diversity in general) were less frequently used in 2020 than in 2019. Conclusion Twitter and congress attendance were highly related and interpersonal topics underwent less discussion during the virtual meeting. The COVID-19 pandemic continued to dominate the discourse within the Academic International Medicine (AIM) community during 2021. Although there were early signs of slow but steady pandemic recovery and the promise of "postpandemic world" was emerging, we were far from declaring victory in this healthcare battle of the century. What is certain is that our collective resilience and innovative spirit have never been more instrumental in alleviating the effects of a global calamity. With the goal of providing top-quality, highly relevant content for our membership, the American College of Academic International Medicine made a strategic decision in the late 2020 to move forward with Virtual 6th Annual Congress and Scientific Forum (AIM 2021). The theme of this year's meeting was "Best Practices in Shifting Landscapes" and reflected the rapidly changing environment we continue to operate in. Primary organization of the meeting was facilitated by the Louisiana State University Spirit of Charity Emergency Medicine Residency Program in New Orleans, with substantial contributions provided by the SUNY Downstate Medical Center team from Brooklyn, New York. The Scientific Forum was also transitioned to a virtual platform, enabling participants from around the globe to present their research. A summary of these efforts and outcomes is provided in this article. Geriatricians and others must embrace the emerging field of geroscience. Until recently geroscience research was pursued in laboratory animals, but now this field requires specialized expertise in the care of vulnerable older patients with multiple chronic diseases and geriatric syndromes, the population likely to benefit the most from emerging therapies. While chronological aging measures the inevitable passage of clock time that occurs equally for everyone, biological aging varies among individuals, and importantly, it is modifiable. Advances in our understanding of biological aging, the discovery of strategies for modifying its rate, and an appreciation of aging as a shared risk factor for chronic diseases have jointly led to the Geroscience Hypothesis. This hypothesis states that interventions modifying aging biology can slow its progression—resulting in the delay or prevention of the onset of multiple diseases and disorders. Here we wish to report on the Third Geroscience Summit held at National Institutes of Health on November 4–5, 2019, which highlighted the importance of engaging other disciplines including clinicians. Involvement by scientists with expertise in clinical trials, health outcomes research, behavioral and social sciences, health policy, and economics is urgently needed to translate geroscience discoveries from the bench to clinical care and health policy. Adding to the urgency of broadening this geroscience coalition is the emergence of biological aging as one the most important modifiable factors of COVID‐19, combined with the inability of our society to once again recognize and confront aging as a priority and opportunity when facing these types of public health emergencies. Topics discussed include gender inequity in infectious diseases , gender inequities affecting career development, and the caring framework for conference parental accommodations.

The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly impacted the medical meetings planned for 2020. This health crisis has caused the cancellation, postponement or a pivot in educational design to virtual formats. In the latter case, the format for virtual meetings has remained very similar to the cancelled face-to-face meeting, by using primarily web conferencing systems. This article intends to start a dialogue with the medical education and events community about possible delivery formats. Among them, the concept of an "Extended Congress" is introduced. The extended congress uses the extension of time, space and languages to a scientific meeting. It aims to: 1) unleash the reach of traditional meetings through the use of technology to access larger audiences in different languages, across a country and internationally, with local leaders to help interpret the knowledge and localize it, and 2) to improve knowledge translation into practice through a sequential and active learning process. An ongoing example is described as a proof of concept: the Latin American Peritoneal Dialysis Extended Congress attracted 774 remote participants from over 20 countries, 93% of whom were paid registrants. Initially designed as a hybrid (live plus remote) event scheduled for March 2020, it had to be reframed as a remote only meeting due to the COVID-19 pandemic, thus protecting the health of members while providing continued value to the organization and attendees of the event. With this experience in mind, the authors are currently designing programs in the United States, through collaboration with the University of Virginia Office of Continuing Medical Education. In summary, the design of meetings can better utilize and integrate technology and reach larger audiences with a blend of formats. Those organizations that adapt more quickly to offer these events will concentrate more of the share, as seen with the adoption of technology by other industries.

Information about the concluded Irish Endodontic Society held last January 24-25, 2008, in Dublin, Ireland, is presented. The event was graced by the presence of Dermot Canavan, who is known to be a highly-regarded Specialist in Orofacial Pain, Anthony Smith from the University of Birmigham, and David Ricketts, who is Head of Operative Dentistry at Dundee Dental School, Scotland. The event was organized to discuss matters on dentistry and edodontics.

The sixth International Conference on Intelligent Biology and Medicine (ICIBM) took place in Los Angeles, California, USA on June 10–12, 2018. This conference featured eleven regular scientific sessions, four tutorials, one poster session, four keynote talks, and four eminent scholar talks. The scientific program covered a wide range of topics from bench to bedside, including 3D Genome Organization, reconstruction of large scale evolution of genomes and gene functions, artificial intelligence in biological and biomedical fields, and precision medicine. Both method development and application in genomic research continued to be a main component in the conference, including studies on genetic variants, regulation of transcription, genetic-epigenetic interaction at both single cell and tissue level and artificial intelligence. Here, we write a summary of the conference and also briefly introduce the four high quality papers selected to be published in BMC Genomics that cover novel methodology development or innovative data analysis. The article presents the highlights of the fourth annual Infant Health Policy Summit held by the National Coalition for Infant Health in Washington, D.C., in November 2018. Mitchell Goldstein, medical director of the coalition, welcomed the attendees. The summit addressed a number of issues including the challenges facing infants and their families, changes in medical policies and the effect of nutrition on the lives of infants with congenital heart disease.

The article discusses the highlights of the 91st Annual Meeting of the American Association for the History of Medicine (AAHM) held at the Meyer and Renee Luskin Conference Center at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) from May 10 to 13, 2018.

The 36th Annual Emergencies in Medicine Conference was held at the Hyatt Centric Hotel in Park City, Utah, from February 25 to March 1, 2018. The conference is designed by Emergency Medicine physicians to be short, engaging, and informative. Conference involved a series of fast-paced 30-min lectures from international leaders in Emergency Medicine about cutting-edge research. The following were the abstracts that were presented at the conference. There was a competition for the best abstract, determined by a vote of all the conference attendees, for which the winner received the title of “2018 Best Emergencies in Medicine Abstract,” and a cash award of $500. Aim: In an era of evidence based medicine research is an essential part of medical profession whether clinical or academic. A research methodology workshop intends to help participants, those who are newer to research field or those who are already doing empirical research. The present study was conducted to assess the changes in knowledge of the participants of a research methodology workshop through a structured questionnaire. Methods: With administrative and ethical approval, a four day research methodology workshop was planned. The participants were subjected to a structured questionnaire (pre-test) containing 20 multiple choice questions (Q1-Q 20) related to the topics to be covered in research methodology workshop before the commencement of the workshop and then subjected to similar posttest questionnaire after the completion of workshop. The mean values of pre and post-test scores were calculated and the results were analyzed and compared. Results: Out of the total 153 delegates, 45(29 %) were males and 108 were (71 %) females. 92 (60%) participants consented to fill the pre-test questionnaire and 68 (44%) filled the post-test questionnaire. The mean Pre-test and post-test scores at 95% Confidence Interval were 07.62 (SD ±3.220) and 09.66 (SD ±2.477) respectively. The differences were found to be significant using Paired Sample T test (P <0.003). Conclusion: There was increase in knowledge of the delegates after attending research methodology workshops. Participatory research methodology workshops are good methods of imparting knowledge, also the long term effects needs to be evaluated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Through digital resources, physicians, microbiologists, and researchers around the world can stay up-to-date with the newest developments in their field and are therefore less dependent on medical congresses as a provider of knowledge and education. The role of the medical congress in spreading knowledge in the face of this changing environment needs to be reexamined. The result is a new paradigm that thinks about the dissemination of medical knowledge and discovery as ongoing conversations between professionals and their extended networks, rather than activities that happen only during the congress. Even though the tools we use to deliver information and knowledge are rapidly evolving, there is confidence in the lasting value of meetings for medical professionals. Medical congresses are environments uniquely conducive to generating new ideas and solutions to problems. Background: Conferences and meetings bring together thousands of doctors from diverse locations. However, the traveling, accommodation, and arrangement of venues for conferences and meetings are expensive and a lot of time needs to be devoted to these logistics. The purpose of this article was to present our own virtual live conference experience using web conferencing and to briefly outline the basics and advantages of this technology in organization of healthcare conferences.Methods: Web conferencing technology was used to organize an international bariatric surgery conference, allowing a large number of attendees to participate and interact from wherever they were, using merely an Internet connection with a video player on their personal computers, laptops, or smartphones.Results: A virtual live conference saves a lot of time and cost and simplifies the logistics needed to organize a learning conference with worldwide participation.Conclusion: As far as we know, this is the first report of a virtual live conference in healthcare.
