8. Effects of Azadirachta indica on sheep infected naturally with helminthes

Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of neem (Azadirachta indica) on natural helminthes infection in lambs. Forty, four-month-old entire Santa Ines lambs were grazed on pasture, over a 20 week period. They were divided into 4 treatments: Without drenching (ND), 3 g A. indica/animal ([A.sub.3]), 6 g A. indica/animal ([A.sub.6]) and 9 g A. indica/animal ([A.sub.9]) over 5 consecutive days, with an interval of 25 days between drenchings. Faeces were collected weekly and lamb weight and blood collection were carried out fortnightly. Four weeks after the last drenching all lambs were slaughtered, and worm burdens calculated. No significant differences were observed for lamb performance between treatments. Blood parameters highlighted the progress of the worm infections, with sheep on treatments [A.sub.6] and [A.sub.9] ending the experiment showing anemia. There was an increase in the total number of worms associated with increasing levels of neem, especially due to the increase in number of H. contortus in detriment to the number of T. colubriformis for highest levels of neem ([A.sub.6] and [A.sub.9]). The increasing doses of neem did not improve the control of endoparasites in sheep naturally infected. Abstract

Traditional livestock productivity is hard to estimate, since it depends on a gamut of animal production indicators that are difficult to measure for many farms. Thus, we propose an analytical method for estimating productivity and understanding the importance of animal production indicators under different full-cycle cattle production systems in Brazil. To evaluate the impact of these indicators, equations were derived from a comutational model of herd evolution for estimating the output parameters of the system as follows: productivity per hectare (PH) and offtake rate (COR), as a function of the indicators; calving rate (CR), mating age (AM), age of slaughter (AS) and stocking rate (SR). For this analysis, twenty-seven scenarios (simulation data) of low to high productivity were used, resulting from the combination of the following factors and levels: 1) calving rate of 50, 65 and 80 %; 2) mating age of heifers of one, two and three, years of age; and 3) age at slaughter of one, two and three year old steers. The scenario with the highest impact for each parameter and the indicator of highest impact for each scenario were identified for the production conditions in the region. Under most scenarios, a reduction in mating age had a greater impact on the productivity indexes compared to a reduction in slaughter age. Appropriate management of available technologies enables farmers to compare the marginal impacts of specific indicators on full-cycle production systems for beef cattle. A ovinocultura é uma importante atividade socioeconômica no Peru, sendo uma das principais fontes de renda para muitas famílias rurais. O objetivo do presente estudo foi caracterizar o fenótipo de ovelhas adultas, procedentes de rebanhos locais criados nos Humedales de Ite, litoral sul do Peru. Estes animais estavam sob sistema semi-extensivo, em pastagens nativas. Treze medidas morfométricas foram mensuradas e analisadas usando os procedimentos MEANS, CORR, GLM, DISCRIM e CLUSTER do programa estatístico SAS. Três medidas morfológicas também foram registradas e três índices zoo-métricos calculados. Os resultados indicaram que estas ovelhas são menores do que as raças especializadas, mas possuem tendência para aptidão de corte e diferentes tamanhos corporais, mostrando variabilidade de biótipos entre rebanhos de acordo ao manejo, localização geográfica e aparente miscigenação racial. Sheep farming is an important socioeconomic activity in Peru, being one of the main sources of income for many rural families. The objective of the present study was to characterize the phenotype of adult ewes, from local flocks farmed in the Ite Wetlands, southern coast of Peru. These animals were reared in a semi extensive system, on native pastures. Thirteen morphometric traits were measured and analyzed using MEANS, CORR, GLM, DISCRIM and CLUSTER procedures of the statistical program SAS. Three morphologic traits were also registered and three zoometric indices calculated. The results indicated that these ewes are smaller than specialized breeds, but had tendency for meat production and different body sizes, showing variability of biotypes between flocks, according to the management, geographical location and apparent racial miscegenation.
