Technological advances in the last decade have influenced changes in the design and engineering industries on a global scale. Lean and collaborative product development are approaches increasingly adopted by the industry and seen as the core of product lifecycle management. These trends have created the need for new skilled professionals, and universities should adapt their curricula in response. There is an increased need for academia to work with industry in order to meet these challenges. This article reports on the Parametric Technology Corporation Academic Research Symposium held in April 2011. The topics were centred around understanding the essence of product lifecycle management and its impact on design and engineering education. Furthermore, examples of implementing product lifecycle management and collaborative practices in higher education were presented from the United States and France. This article concludes with a discussion of the recommendations made at the symposium for the future development and support of key skills across university curricula.

Poster Session Abstracts - Abstract
The Cornell University Life Sciences Core Laboratories Center (CLC) provides an array of genomics, proteomics, imaging and informatics shared research resources and services to the university community and to outside investigators. The CLC includes fee-for-service research, technology testing and development, and educational components. The Center has seven core facilities, including genomics (DNA sequencing, genotyping, and microarrays), epigenomics, proteomics and mass spectrometry, microscopy and imaging, bioinformatics, bio-IT, and advanced technology assessment. The CLC is part of a New York State designated Center for Advanced Technology in Life Science Enterprise. The mission of the CLC is to promote research in the life sciences with advanced technologies in a shared resource environment. Use of the CLC resources and services is steadily increasing due to the growth in the number and types of cores in the center, to the expansion of existing services and the implementation of new core technologies, and to the coordinated integration and synergy of services between the CLC cores. Multidisciplinary support for multi-functional instrument platforms is implemented by integrated operations of the CLC core facilities. Investigators are offered coordinated project consultations with the directors and staff of all relevant cores during the design, data production and analysis phases of their projects. The CLC is involved in establishing and supporting multidisciplinary research projects that involve both intercampus initiatives and multi-institutional collaborations. With a concentration of advanced instrumentation and expertise in their applications, the CLC is a key resource for life sciences research.

Results onK
0 and ? production ine+ e- annihilation at c.m. energies of 14, 22 and 34 GeV are presented. The shape of theK0 and ? differential cross sections are very similar to each other and to those of p± ,K± and . Scaling violations are observed forK0 production. We obtain a value for the probability to produce strange quark-antiquark pairs relative to that to produce up or down quark-antiquark pairs of 0.35±0.02±0.05. The value ofRh =s(e+ e- ?hX)/sµµ is shown to rise steadily with c.m. energy for all particle species. At 34 GeV we find 1.48±0.05K0 and 0.31±0.03 ? per event. We have searched for possible ? polarization. The production ofK0 's and ?'s in jets is examined as a function ofpT 2 and rapidity and compared to that of all charged particles; the yields in two and three jets are also investigated. Results are presented from events with two baryons observed.- Published

- Abstract
We present the general properties of jets produced bye
+ e- annihilation. Their production and fragmentation characteristics have been studied with charged particles for c.m. energies between 12 and 43 GeV. In this energy rangee+ e- annihilation into hadrons is dominated by pair production of the five quarksu, d, s, c andb. In addition, hard gluon bremsstrahlung effects which are invisible at low energies become prominent at the high energies. The observed multiplicity distributions deviate from a Poisson distribution. The multiplicity distributions for the overall event as well as for each event hemisphere satisfy KNO scaling to within ~20%. The distributions ofxp =2p/W are presented; scale breaking is observed at the level of 25%. The quantityxp dd/dxp is compared with multigluon emission calculations which predict a Gaussian distribution in terms of ln(1/x). The observed energy dependence of the maximum of the distributions is in qualitative agreement with the calculations. Particle production is analysed with respect to the jet axis and longitudinal and transverse momentum spectra are presented. The angular distribution of the jet axis strongly supports the idea of predominant spin 1/2 quark pair production. The particle distributions with respect to the event plane show clearly the growing importance of planar events with increasing c.m. energies. They also exclude the presence of heavy quark production,e+ e- ?Q for quark masses up to 5Q<20.3 GeV (|e Q |=2/3) and 7Q<19 GeV (|e Q |=1/3). The comparison of 1/stot dd/dpT measured at 14, 22 and 34 GeV suggests that hard gluon bremsstrahlung contributes mainly to transverse momenta larger than 0.5 GeV/c. The rapidity distribution forW?22 GeV shows an enhancement away fromy=0 which corresponds to an increase in yield of 10–15% compared to the centre region (y=0). The enhancement probably results from heavy quark production and gluon bremsstrahlung. The particle flux around the jet axis shows with increasing c.m. energy a rapidly growing number of particles collimated around the jet axis, while at large angles to the jet axis almost noW dependence is observed. For fixed longitudinal momentump? approximate “fan invariance” is seen: The shape of the angular distribution around the jet axis is almost independent ofW. The collimation depends strongly onp? . For smallp? ,p? <0.2 GeV/c, isotropy is observed. With increasingp? the particles tend to be emitted closer and closer to the jet axis.- Published

We present an analysis of electroweak leptonic couplings from high statistics experiments on Bhabha scattering and μ pair production at an energy of 34.5 GeV. The forward-backward charge asymmetry of the μ pairs was measured to be −0.098±0.023±0.005. The data were found to agree well with the standard theory of electroweak interaction giving sin
2 θW =0.27±0.07. The leptonic weak couplings were determined to begv =0.000±0.170 andgA =−0.481±0.055. The data were also used to investigate a class of composite models for leptons.- Published

- Abstract
We present an analysis ofρ
0 ρ0 production by two photons in theρ0 ρ0 invariant mass range from 1.2 to 2.0 GeV. From a study of the angular correlations in the process γγ→ρ0 ρ0 →π− π+ π− we exclude a dominant contribution fromJP =0− or 2− states. The data indicate sizeable contributions fromJP =0+ for four pion massesM4π <1.7 GeV and fromJP =2+ forM4π >1.7 GeV. The data are also well described by a model with isotropic production and uncorrelated isotropic decay of theρ0, s. The cross section stays high below the nominalρ0 ρ0 threshold, i.e.M4π <1.5 GeV. The matrix element forρ0 ρ0 production is found to decrease steeply with increasingM4π . Upper limits for the couplings of the ι(1440) and Θ(1640) to γγ andρ0 ρ0 are given:Γ(ι→γγ)·B(ι→ρ0 ρ0 )<1.0 keV andΓ(Θ→γγ)- Published

- Abstract
Multihadron events produced bye
+ e- annihilation at a c.m. energy of 34.6 GeV have been used to determine as . The predictions of 1 st and 2nd order QCD models with independent jet and string fragmentation have been compared to a large variety of kinematic variables such as event shapes, transverse momentum spectra, jet masses, 3-cluster thrust and the asymmetry of energy-energy correlations. The value of as has been found to depend on the variables used, on the fragmentation model and on the treatment of soft gluons in the 2nd order QCD calculation. Within the models considered as has been found in complete 2nd order QCD to lie between 0.12 and 0.23.- Published

- Abstract
The inclusive production of p
± andK± mesons and of protons and antiprotons ine+ e- annihilation has been measured at c.m. energies ofW=14, 22 and 34GeV. Using time of flight measurements and Cerenkov counters the full momentum range has been covered. Differential cross sections and total particle yields are given. At particle momenta of 0.4 GeV/c more than 90% of the charged hadrons are pions. With increasing momentum the fraction of pions among the charged hadrons decreases. AtW=34 GeV and a momentum of 5 GeV/c the particle fractions are approximately p± :K± :p, . On average an event atW=34 GeV contains 10.3±0.4p± , 2.0±0.2K± and 0.8±0.1p, . In addition, we present results on baryon correlations using a sample of events where two or more protons and/or antiprotons are observed in the final state.- Published

Results onK0 and Λ production ine+e− annihilation at c.m. energies of 14, 22 and 34 GeV are presented. The shape of theK0 and Λ differential cross sections are very similar to each other and to those of π±,K± and\(p(\bar p)\). Scaling violations are observed forK0 production. We obtain a value for the probability to produce strange quark-antiquark pairs relative to that to produce up or down quark-antiquark pairs of 0.35±0.02±0.05. The value ofRh=σ(e+e-→hX)/σµµ is shown to rise steadily with c.m. energy for all particle species. At 34 GeV we find 1.48±0.05K0 and 0.31±0.03 Λ per event. We have searched for possible Λ polarization. The production ofK0's and Λ's in jets is examined as a function ofpT2 and rapidity and compared to that of all charged particles; the yields in two and three jets are also investigated. Results are presented from events with two baryons\((\Lambda ,\bar \Lambda ,por\bar p)\) observed.

Hard processes in photon-photon collisions are studied using high statistics data without requiring an electron tag. A high yield of hadrons with pt in the range 1.5-3.0 GeV/c is observed. This yield exceeds the expectation of the Born term by a factor of four. © 1984.

(1983). doi:10.1007/BF01577813, The inclusive production of π± andK± mesons and of protons and antiprotons ine+e− annihilation has been measured at c.m. energies ofW=14, 22 and 34GeV. AtW=34 GeV and a momentum of 5 GeV/c the particle fractions are approximately π±:K±:p,\(\bar p = 0.55:0.3:0.15\). On average an event atW=34 GeV contains 10.3±0.4π±, 2.0±0.2K± and 0.8±0.1p,\(\bar p\). In addition, we present results on baryon correlations using a sample of events where two or more protons and/or antiprotons are observed in the final state.

- Abstract
We present evidence for the production of Ξ·-, Ξ- in e+e- annihilation into hadrons. Our measurements yields: 0.026 ± 0.008 (stat.) ± 0.009 (syst.) Ξ-,Ξ- per hadronic event at W ∼ 34 GeV. Using our previous measurements of Λ, Λ and p,p production we obtain the relative yields (Ξ-, Ξ-/(Λ, Λ = 0.087 ± 0.03 (stat.) ± 0.03 (syst.) and (Ξ-, Ξ-/(p, p = 0.033 ± 0.011 (stat.) ± 0.011 (syst.). © 1983.

Samples of ∼1,900 identified protons and ∼500 Λ have been used to search for decuplet baryon production in e+e- annihilation at a c.m. energy of 34.4 GeV. The p π+ and Λ π± invariant mass spectra contain no Δ or Σ* signals. Upper limits, at 95% confidence level, are that less than 12% of all p and less than 26% of all Λ come from the decay of doubly charged Δ and singly charged Σ* states respectively. These limits correspond to production rates of

- Abstract
Production of the ppπ+π- final state by two-photon scattering was observed. The cross section for γγ→ppπ+π- was determined assuming phase space production. No evidence was found for the production or formation of resonances. Upper limits are given for Λ and Δ pair production, for production of ppρ{variant}0 and for the two-photon excitation of cc bound states. © 1984.

Exclusive production of proton-antiproton pairs by two photon scattering at CM energies between 2.0 GeV and 3.1 GeV has been measured with the TASSO detector at the e+e- storage ring PETRA. The angular distribution is flat within the accepted CM angular range |cos Θ*|≤0.7. The integrated cross section (|cos Θ*|≤0.6) drops from about 4 nb at 2 GeV to less than 0.5 nb above 3 GeV. For the two-photon production of the ηc(2984) and its subsequent decay into proton-antiproton the upper limit Γ(ηc→γγ)·B(η c→pp)
