Our study demonstrates that the pre-M&A phase provides breeding ground for irrational behavior in the form of cognitive biases. These biases not only arise within acquiring and acquired firms, but M&A advisors themselves are also prone to effort-saving techniques and subconscious biases, which may be reflected in the client's M&A decision-making process. Cognitive biases stem from the contractual client–advisor relationship that elicits time pressure, standardization, and emotionality—that is, circumstances that favor the employment of effort-saving techniques. These biases lead to complex decisions based on the selective collection, framing and evaluation of data, the overestimation of one's rationality, ability and deal likelihood, the illusion of control, and one-sided views. Such a biased evaluation of information is likely to induce the selection of a non-optimal target or acquirer or simply forcing a deal that should not be made in the first place. Hence, these cognitive biases can be seen as a source for consequent M&A failure. With the identification of cognitive biases and bias-fostering circumstances, our study allows for awareness and consequent mitigation of such blind spots, thereby improving decision-making processes in the pre-M&A phase via the introduction of "debiasing" strategies and the creation of favorable conditions for rational reasoning. Background: The increased occurrence of malaria among Africa's displaced communities poses a new humanitarian problem. Understanding malaria epidemiology among the displaced population in African refugee camps is a vital step for implementing effective malaria control and elimination measures. As a result, this study aimed to generate comprehensive and conclusive data from diverse investigations undertaken in Africa. Methods: This review adhered to PRISMA standards, involving searches across electronic data bases such as Google Scholar, PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Science Direct. In addition, grey literature was retrieved from several professional associations. The quality of selected studies was evaluated using the Newcastle–Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale. Data extraction was executed using Microsoft Excel, and the meta-analysis was performed with STATA 14 software. A random-effects model was used to estimate the pooled prevalence and associated factors of malaria. Meta-regression and subgroup analysis were used to identify heterogeneity, while funnel plots and Egger's statistical tests assessed the publication bias. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis was performed. Results: The overall random-effects pooled prevalence of malaria infection (comprising symptomatic and asymptomatic cases) across all included studies was 35.93% (95% CI 24.71–47.15). This study showed a high level of heterogeneity between studies (I2 = 97.1; P < 0.001). Of the identified Plasmodium species, Plasmodium falciparum constituted 99.3%. The frost plot indicated that the overall prevalence of P. falciparum was 34.94% (95% CI 24.34–45.53). Subgroup analysis revealed significant variation (P < 0.001) in malaria prevalence between asymptomatic and symptomatic cases, with a prevalence of 4.39% (95% CI 2.57–6.21) and 45.10% (95% CI 27.28–62.92), respectively. Lack of insecticide-treated mosquito net utilization (AOR 2.43; 95% CI 1.01–5.88) and living near mosquito breeding sites (AOR 2.76, 95% CI 1.56–4.87) were risk factors of malaria. Conclusion: This study determined that the pooled prevalence of malaria among displaced individuals in refugee camps was high and exhibited variations across different population groups. This signifying there is still a need to improve and recheck existing malaria prevention and control strategies to establish an effective malaria control and elimination programme in Africa. Simple Summary: A comprehensive analysis was conducted on 10 morphometric traits of breeding male black sea turtles from the population in Colola, Michoacán, Mexico. The results indicate that these males have a smaller body size than other populations of green sea turtles in their pantropical distribution range. On average, male black sea turtles are 15.2 cm smaller than nesting females, which may have implications for their sexual maturity and mating success. The operational sex ratio (OSR) reflects the number of males available for mating with receptive females. In this study, an OSR of 2.9 males for every 1 female in a multi-year analysis of the Michoacan population was found. We also identified monthly variations in OSR values at the beginning and end of the nesting season, likely due to the differential arrival of males to the breeding area and the varying number of sexually receptive females. Research on this subject is scarce, and this is because reproductive interactions (mate and courtship) take place far from the nesting area. This distance complicates their study due to accessibility and cost issues. Body size is one of the most important traits in the life history of vertebrates. In this work, we analyzed the morphometric traits of breeding males of the eastern Pacific green sea turtle population known as the black sea turtle on the coast of Michoacan, Mexico. The morphometric analysis indicates that males have the smallest body size compared to other males in other Chelonia populations. The size of male black sea turtles is even smaller (by 15.2 cm in average CCL) in carapace curve length (70.5 cm CCL) than females (85.7 CCL) of the same population. This suggests that males reach maturity at an earlier age than females and would have implications for mating success. The assessment of the operational sex ratio was conducted over a multi-year period (2004, 2009, 2017, and 2023). From a total of 336 h of observation, we identified 653 mating groups containing 1986 males and 669 females. The estimated operational sex ratio (OSR) during the study period was 2.96 males for every female. Among the mating groups, 34.3% consisted of only one male, while 65.7% included two or more males, with the number of males per female ranging from 2 to 17. The analysis revealed that there are interannual and monthly variations in OSR values, with observations showing a range from 2.3:1 (male to female) in 2023 to 4.3:1 (male to female) in 2009. The OSR variations show an evolving trend that can inform future strategies. In September, the ratio was 2.8:1, which changed to 3:1 in October and November, and then reached 3.3:1 in December (male/female). Lake Baiyangdian is one of China's largest macrophyte - derived lakes, facing severe challenges related to water quality maintenance and eutrophication prevention. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) was a huge carbon pool and its abundance, property, and transformation played important roles in the biogeochemical cycle and energy flow in lake ecosystems. In this study, Lake Baiyangdian was divided into four distinct areas: Unartificial Area (UA), Village Area (VA), Tourism Area (TA), and Breeding Area (BA). We examined the diversity of DOM properties and sources across these functional areas. Our findings reveal that DOM in this lake is predominantly composed of protein - like substances, as determined by excitation - emission matrix and parallel factor analysis (EEM - PARAFAC). Notably, the exogenous tyrosine-like component C1 showed a stronger presence in VA and BA compared to UA and TA. Ultrahigh - resolution mass spectrometry (FT - ICR MS) unveiled a similar DOM molecular composition pattern across different functional areas due to the high relative abundances of lignan compounds, suggesting that macrophytes significantly influence the material structure of DOM. DOM properties exhibited specific associations with water quality indicators in various functional areas, as indicated by the Mantel test. The connections between DOM properties and NO 3 N and NH 3 N were more pronounced in VA and BA than in UA and TA. Amid coevolutionary arms races between brood parasitic birds and their diverse host species, the formation of host‐specific races, or gentes, has drawn significant research focus. Nevertheless, numerous questions about gentes evolutionary patterns persist. Here, we investigated the potential for gentes evolution across multiple common cuckoo (Cuculus canorus) populations parasitizing diverse host species in China. Using maternal (mitochondrial and W‐linked DNA) and biparental (autosomal and Z‐linked DNA) markers, we found consistent clustering of cuckoo gentes (rather than geographical populations) into distinct clades in matrilineal gene trees, indicating robust differentiation. In contrast, biparental markers indicated intermixing of all gentes, suggesting asymmetric gene flow regardless of geography. Unlike the mitonuclear discordance commonly resulting from incomplete lineage sorting, adaptive introgression, or demographic disparities, the observed pattern in brood parasitic cuckoos might reflect biased host preferences between sexes. We hereby present the "Isolation by Gentes with Asymmetric Migration" model. According to this model, the maternal line differentiation of the common cuckoo in China is potentially driven by host preferences in females, whereas males maintained the integrity of the cuckoo species through random mating. To achieve this, cuckoo males could perform flexible migration among gentes or engage in early copulation with females before reaching the breeding sites, allowing female cuckoos to store sperm from various gentes. Future studies collecting additional samples from diverse cuckoo gentes with overlapping distribution and investigating the migratory and copulation patterns of each sex would enhance our understanding of sex‐biased differentiation among cuckoo populations in China. Sociality is a complex phenomenon, able to influence multiple traits of an individual life history. In group-living mammals, sociality is likely to play a major role in the reproductive success of individuals. Here we investigate how sociality traits are associated to reproductive success in female Alpine marmots (Marmota marmota), a highly social and cooperative breeding ground squirrel distributed in the European Alps. We used social network analysis to calculate sociality metrics and hurdle generalized linear mixed models (hurdle GLMMs) to model the relationship between sociality metrics and reproductive success of individually tagged female Alpine marmots. Our results showed that centrality of a reproductive female within her social group and the number of social partners are positively related to reproductive success, while agonistic behavior was not related with reproduction. Our results highlight the importance of affiliative interactions with other group members in cooperative breeders, suggesting that in such systems female fitness could be more related to social cohesion than to costs of agonistic behaviors to maintain dominance status. Gold mining is an activity that has developed in Colombia due to the great availability of mineral resources geographically distributed throughout the territory. The extraction techniques used are linked to the domain of illegality and to armed actors who have generated notable landscape impacts. This study, focused on the Municipality of Ayapel, Colombia, identifies the landscape units and analyzes the changes in land use and cover resulting from gold mining between the years 1987, 2002, and 2022, applying the CORINE Land Cover methodology, an adapted legend for Colombia, using Landsat satellite images. For this, the recognition of the physical geographical characteristics of the area was carried out in order to group homogeneous landscape units through a cartographic overlay of various layers of information, considering variables such as topography, geomorphology, and lithology. This research identifies a total of 16 landscape units, 8 of which were intervened in 1987, mainly associated with denudational hills. However, in 2022, 13 landscape units were intervened, with a considerable increase in the affected area. Particularly noteworthy is the occupation of landscape units associated with alluvial valleys, with an average of more than 30% of their total area. This demonstrates that they are the most attractive and vulnerable areas for mining exploitation, as they are the zones with the greatest potential for hosting mineral deposits. This impact has worsened over the last decade due to the introduction of other extraction techniques with machinery (dredges, dragon boats, backhoes, and bulldozers) that generate higher productive and economic yields but, at the same time, cause deep environmental liabilities due to the lack of administrative controls. The changes in extraction techniques, the increase in the international price of the commodity, and the absence of government attention have been the breeding ground that has driven gold mining activity. The article in Marine Mammal Science discusses the sequences of a possible distress call of a juvenile gray whale found in a shallow lagoon within the Gulf of California. Gray whales use sound to communicate, with various sounds associated with different activities. The study reports a new tonal call type, S10, possibly produced by a juvenile gray whale, which was detected in sequences along with known S1 calls. The authors speculate that the distress calls or mixed sequences could serve as contact or distress calls, especially in the context of whales visiting shallow areas where they could potentially strand. Dengue fever is a vector-borne, acute, febrile, and self-limiting systemic viral infection that affects tropical and subtropical regions, including Pakistan. Karachi has a significant burden of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus due to suitable breeding sites, weather, and rapid and unplanned urbanization of squatter areas. The country has limited surveillance studies on circulating serotypes of the dengue virus and the patient's clinical features evolving over temporal changes. This study aimed to bridge the gap by screening 1500 patients using immunochromatographic detection and clinically following up on 486 of them. RNA extraction and cDNA synthesis of positive patients were performed, followed by PCR and sequencing. Data analysis and graphs were done on Prism 8.0. Males (53.87%) had a higher infection rate than females (46.13), with ages 18–60 years having the highest infection rate (69.14%). Results showed that 57.8% of patients were positive for NS1, followed by IgM (39.8%), and IgG (89.77%). DENV 1 and DENV 2 were found to be circulating, representing 20% and 80% respectively. Data on fever, shortness of breath, body aches, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and epistaxis revealed significant differences. We conclude that continuous surveillance of dengue and other Flaviviruses and their infections is necessary to improve the prognosis and management of vector-borne diseases, thereby reducing the associated mortality rate of patients in Pakistan. Vocalizations are one of the key premating reproductive barriers that could affect species formation. In song-learning birds, vocal traits are sometimes overlooked in species delimitation, as compared to morphological or plumage-based differences. In this study, we assessed geographic variation in songs of eight pairs of oscines on two scales: (1) comparing primary songs of species/subspecies pairs whose breeding grounds are eastern and western counterparts of each other in the continental North America, and (2) for each counterpart, identifying and comparing possible variation among their populations. We found that there were strong differences in the songs between eastern and western taxa, though the magnitude of that difference was not correlated to a mitochondrial DNA-based estimates of divergence. Additionally, we found that within-taxa geographic variation was not common in our focal taxa, beyond a single species (Townsend's warbler, Setophaga townsendi). The result of this study provides a standardized, quantitative comparison of eastern and western songbirds, and serves as the foundation to explore the possible effectiveness of vocalizations as a reproductive barrier at this geographic scale. Background: Microsporidia MB disrupts Plasmodium development in Anopheles mosquitoes, making it a possible biocontrol tool for malaria. As a tool for vector/disease control, its ecological distribution and the factors that determine their occurrence must be defined. We investigated the frequency of Microsporidia MB in Anopheles mosquitoes across selected sites in northern and southern Ghana, as well as the physicochemical parameters of mosquito breeding water that are associated with the occurrence of the fungus, by fitting regression models. Methods: A non-column extraction method was used to extract DNA from the abdomens of 4255 adult Anopheles mosquitoes that emerged from larvae and pupae collected between August and October of 2021 and 2022. Detection of Microsporidia MB was achieved using quantitative PCR (qPCR), while mosquito species were molecularly identified using short interspersed nuclear elements (SINE), restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) methods, and the ANOSPP algorithm. Results: Overall Microsporidia MB distribution was 2.2% (92/4255). Male mosquitoes exhibited a higher frequency of infections and had a predicted probability of infection that was 85% higher than that of females. Sites in Ghana's Savannah zone had the highest Microsporidia MB distribution (68.5%). Biochemical oxygen demand in mosquito breeding water was estimated to be positively associated with and significantly predicts Microsporidia MB in mosquitoes with an accuracy of 94%. Increasing ammonium ion concentrations reduced the chances of finding Microsporidia MB-positive mosquitoes. According to our data, all Anopheles mosquitoes, including minor species such as An. squamosus, An. pretoriensis and An. rufipes, had equal probability of Microsporidia MB infection. Conclusions: These results provide preliminary information on micro-ecological factors that potentially support the sustainability of Microsporidia MB infection in mosquitoes during their aquatic life stages. It will be important, therefore, to explore the impact of strategies for larval source management on these factors to ensure that the symbiont's persistence during the host's aquatic stages may not be adversely affected should it be used as an integrated approach for mosquito/disease control. Background: Increased global trade, while beneficial economically, can also increase the spread of vector-borne diseases, particularly those transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes spreading via trade routes. Given the heightened trade-induced activity at ports of entry, it is particularly crucial to assess the risk of mosquito-borne diseases in these settings. This study compared the risks of Aedes-borne disease in and around the eastern Tanzanian seaport of Tanga. Methods: A 200 m × 200 m grid-based system was used to sample mosquitoes within the port area, and in surrounding areas at 2 km, 2.5 km, and 5 km away, between June and December 2023. We characterized mosquito breeding habitats, collected mosquito larvae using standard dippers and tested susceptibility of raised adult Aedes aegypti populations to different insecticides. Adult mosquitoes were collected using BG sentinel traps (daytime) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) light traps (night-time). Additionally, more than 200 port users and neighboring residents were surveyed to assess their experiences with and perceptions of mosquito biting and disease risks. Results: There were 2931 breeding sites, with (60.8%, n = 1782) positive for Aedes larvae. The percentage of water-holding containers infested with Aedes immatures, i.e., the container index (CI), was highest in the port area (66.2%), and lowest 5 km away (44.6%). The port area also had a greater proportion of temporary breeding sites (64.9%) than did the surrounding areas. The adult mosquito surveys revealed 20,449 mosquito species including: Culex quinquefasciatus (56.2%), Mansonia uniformis (38.6%), Ae. aegypti (5.1%), Anopheles gambiae (0.1%), and Anopheles funestus. Ae. aegypti were more abundant in the port area than in the surrounding areas (P < 0.001), whereas Culex sp., and Mansonia sp., were significantly outside (P < 0.001). Adult Anopheles sp., were found only in the port area, but Anopheles larvae were found both within and outside the port areas. Tests on Ae. aegypti sp., revealed susceptibility to bendiocarb and DDT, and resistance to permethrin. Awareness of mosquito-borne diseases among respondents was high for malaria (64.8%), but low for dengue (26.3%) and Chikungunya (1.7%). Most respondents reported being bothered by mosquitoes mostly at night (53.4%) or in the evening (40.7%). In addition to insecticidal bednets, which are used primarily against malaria, preventive measures for Aedes-borne diseases are limited. Conclusions: This study identified significant potential risk of Aedes species, specifically Ae. aegypti sp., and associated diseases, but low perception of risk and inadequate personal protection measures in the study area. Background: In recent years, the total production of mud crab Scylla paramamosain has been declining, and the breeding areas are faced with land shortage and shortage of breeding production, which needs to be solved urgently. S. paramamosain can survive and grow in a wide range of salinities is an excellent variety suitable for saline-alkali water aquaculture. As a species with high economic value and strong adaptability to the environment, its cultivation under low salt conditions can not only improve the utilization efficiency of saline-alkali land, but also provide new possibilities for the sustainable development of aquaculture. Results: A total of 248 different metabolites were identified by LC/GC-MS in the intestinal tract of S. paramamosain. These different metabolites were mainly concentrated in 'Lipids and lips-like molecules'. Among them, 112 metabolites are upregulated, and among these upregulated metabolites are mainly 'Fatty Acyls' and 'Glycerophospholipids'. The upregulation of these metabolites indicates an increase in lipid storage of S. paramamosain, which may increase the resistance of S. paramamosain to adverse environmental stress. Among them, 136 metabolic differentiates were down-regulated, mainly 'Carboxylic acids and derivatives'. The down-regulation of these organic acids may indicate that organic acids are used as energy sources for the immune response to long-term environmental stress. There is an urgent need for mathematical models that can be used to inform the deployment of surveillance, early warning and management systems for transboundary pest invasions. This is especially important for desert locust, one of the most dangerous migratory pests for smallholder farmers. During periods of desert locust upsurges and plagues, gregarious adult locusts form into swarms that are capable of long-range dispersal. Here we introduce a novel integrated modelling framework for use in predicting gregarious locust populations. The framework integrates the selection of breeding sites, maturation through egg, hopper and adult stages and swarm dispersal in search of areas suitable for feeding and breeding. Using a combination of concepts from epidemiological modelling, weather and environment data, together with an atmospheric transport model for swarm movement we provide a tool to forecast short- and long-term swarm movements. A principal aim of the framework is to provide a practical starting point for use in the next upsurge. Author summary: There is a critical need for tools that can help manage and predict the spread of transboundary pests, especially the desert locust, one of the most destructive pests for smallholder farmers and pastoralists. During upsurges, desert locusts form massive swarms that can travel long distances, causing severe damage to crops and natural vegetation. To address this, we have developed an integrated modelling framework designed to predict the behaviour of these migratory locust populations. The framework takes into account the selection of breeding sites, the life cycle of the locust (from egg to adult), and the movement of swarms as they search for food and breeding grounds. By combining techniques from epidemiological modelling, weather forecasting, environmental data, and atmospheric models, the tool is designed to forecast locust swarm movements in both the short and long term. Presence-absence surveys are frequently used to monitor populations of rare and elusive species. Such data may also be used as a proxy for breeding activity, but links between presence-absence data and higher-order processes must be validated to determine their reliability. The Marbled Murrelet (Brachyramphus marmoratus) is a threatened seabird that nests in older-aged forests along the Pacific Coast. Its nests are exceptionally difficult to find, so we tested whether presence-absence surveys can help identify nesting sites. Between 2018 and 2022 we located 17 trees containing active murrelet nests in the Oregon Coast Range (USA) and 38 trees that purportedly contained no active nests (26 in occupied murrelet stands and 12 in unoccupied stands). Observers surveyed within 200 m of focal trees using standard presence-absence surveys, and we modeled the effects of site status (active nest or control) and distance from the focal tree on probability of recording murrelets. We never detected murrelets in unoccupied control sites. We found some evidence that the probability of recording presence was higher at active nesting sites (0.81, 95% CI: 0.71, 0.88) than at occupied control sites (0.71, 95% CI: 0.64, 0.78) although a null model had similar support. The probability of recording murrelet breeding behaviors in nesting and occupied control sites was 0.20 (95% CI: 0.14, 0.27) regardless of distance to a known active nest. These results suggest that presence-absence surveys may be useful for identifying plausible murrelet nesting habitat, but they are ineffective for identifying active nesting sites. Moreover, we estimated that 20 repeated surveys at a point in space are required to reasonably conclude there are no active nesting sites within 200 m. Microplastic (MP) pollution poses a global threat to urban and rural environments and can have negative effects on a range of organisms. Mosquito larvae often breed in water contaminated with MPs, and given their important role as disease vectors, understanding the effects of larval exposure to MPs is critical for understanding the potential impact on their life history traits and subsequent methods for their control. Here, we have exposed first instar larvae of Anopheles gambiae s.s. to environmentally realistic concentrations of PET microplastics (1.0–7.5 μm) and a sub-lethal dose of insecticide mixed with microplastics, and quantified survival, development, and susceptibility of larvae over six generations. Adult mosquitoes from larvae exposed to these treatments were subsequently tested for insecticide resistance. Exposure to MPs decreased larval survival rates compared to the control; however, over six generations of exposure, survival rates significantly increased. Similarly, there was a higher survival rate of those larvae exposed to MPs mixed with insecticide compared to those exposed to just the insecticide, and survival increased further over the six generations. For the adult mosquito susceptibility tests, knockdown times (KDTs) indicated some level of insecticide tolerance when larvae had been previously exposed to MPs and insecticides. This is the first study demonstrating the selection of insecticide tolerance in adult mosquitoes after consecutive generations of larval exposures to varying concentrations of MPs. Therefore, field-scale studies are now urgently required to quantify whether larval insecticides are less effective at controlling mosquitoes in breeding sites commonly polluted with MPs. Amphibian chytrid fungus, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), is associated with declines in ~500 amphibian species globally. Decades after initial disease outbreaks, the trajectory of impacted species varies substantially; while some species continue to decline, there are instances of natural recovery, such as the whistling tree frog, Litoria verreauxii, in south‐eastern Australia. The decline and subsequent recovery of this species have been quantified through repeated surveys of historically occupied sites over the past 30 years; however, the underlying mechanisms driving this recovery remain unknown. In this study, we investigate the potential factors facilitating the recovery of L. verreauxii by examining Bd prevalence and intensity in both adults and tadpoles. Specifically, we addressed the following hypotheses: (1) Bd prevalence in tadpoles would be lower compared to adults at the same breeding sites, (2) Bd prevalence in tadpoles would decrease over the spring breeding season due to the increasing availability of warm water microhabitats where tadpoles could potentially avoid or clear Bd infections and (3) there would be a negative correlation between Bd prevalence in tadpoles and the abundance and diversity of microfauna, which may consume Bd zoospores. Our findings indicate that tadpole infection prevalence remained consistently low at 1.36% (95% CI: 0.6–2.47%) throughout our spring sampling period, across different developmental stages. Adults had moderate to high prevalence within the same ponds at 50.53% (95% CI: 43.19–57.84%). No effect of temperature or microfauna diversity and abundance was apparent. While the mechanisms driving the recovery of this species remain unknown, low infection prevalence in tadpoles is likely a key component to the species' recovery. Background: Resistance to insecticides is spreading among populations of Aedes aegypti, the primary vector of important human arboviruses. The escalating insecticide resistance poses a significant threat to dengue vector control, with an expanding number of countries affected by the disease. To gain a deeper insight into the evolution of insecticide resistance, it is essential to have longitudinal surveillance results, which are currently lacking, particularly from African Ae. aegypti populations. Here we report on three-years of surveillance of Ae. aegypti susceptibility to insecticide resistance phenotypes and associated kdr mutations in Burkina Faso, a country with regular dengue outbreaks. Methods: Ae. aegypti susceptibility to insecticides and the V410L, V1016I, and F1534C kdr target site mutations linked to pyrethroid insecticide resistance were monitored in Ouagadougou from 2016 to 2018. Larvae were collected from artificial containers at two sites and reared to adulthood in an insectary. Bioassays were conducted on female adults, along with a laboratory-susceptible strain, following standard WHO protocols. Allele-specific PCR genotyping assays were utilized to identify the V410L, V1016I, and F1534C kdr pyrethroid target site mutations. Results: Bioassays revealed a high level of resistance to permethrin and deltamethrin that progressively increased over the three-year period in both localities. The 1534C mutation was nearly fixed throughout the three years at each locality, and while the closely-related 410L and 1016I mutations did not vary between localities, their frequency notably increased from 2016 to 2018. Interestingly, Ae. aegypti populations in both areas remained susceptible to bendiocarb, fenitrothion, and malathion. Modelling the mortality data further confirmed the escalating resistance trend over the years and emphasized the significant role played by the three kdr mutations in conferring resistance to pyrethroids. Conclusion: Mortality rates indicate that Ae. aegypti populations from Ouagadougou are becoming increasingly resistant to pyrethroid insecticides, likely due to an increase in the frequencies of the 410L and 1016I kdr mutations. Organophosphate insecticides are likely to be better alternative options for control. Author summary: Aedes aegypti transmits diseases including dengue, chikungunya, and Zika. The location of offshore and coastal marine engineering projects often shows considerable overlap with the foraging and breeding grounds of marine mammals. Lingding Bay, located in the Chinese Pearl River Delta, is home to the world's largest known population of Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins (Sousa chinensis). The bay is also the site of the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge mega-engineering project. This study assessed the responses of the dolphins to the bridge construction. Data were collected on dolphin sightings by survey vessels following standard line-transect tracks, with surveys conducted during the pre-construction (2005–2006), construction (2015–2016), and post-construction (2020–2021) phases. The dolphin distribution patterns, density, group sizes, and presence of calves were compared across these three periods. Additionally, the range patterns of the dolphins were analyzed following the identification of individuals during the post-construction phase. The average distance at which humpback dolphins were sighted from the bridge was significantly shorter after the completion of the bridge than during the pre-construction and construction phases. Furthermore, the density of humpback dolphins in the southern region of the bay—where the bridge is located—was significantly higher post-construction compared with that recorded during the pre-construction and construction phases. A noticeable increase in dolphin group sizes post-construction may indicate a shift in foraging strategy. The post-construction phase coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown period, and the resultant reduced human activity in Lingding Bay may have influenced the distribution of dolphins and other animals to some extent. Individual identification results demonstrated that the waters near the bridge remained an integral habitat for the dolphins post-construction, as they freely traversed underneath the bridge. The results of this study hold considerable importance within the realm of marine engineering, offering valuable guidance and references for informed decision-making and operational practices in associated domains. The first breeding site of Blue-cheeked Bee-eater (Merops persicus) in Peninsular India was observed in the Andivillai saltpans of Kanniyakumari district, Tamil Nadu. We found a total of 28 breeding burrows distributed into three subsets in the stretch of 30 m. Among 28 nests, 16 were active and 12 were inactive/unused. The active nest-tunnels have a mean tunnel length of 1.53±0.53 m and nest-mouth diameter of 9.93±1.48 cm. While the females excavated tunnels and started brooding males were guarding the colony. The male very often fed the female brooding inside the nest till the hatchlings appeared, and later both parents were observed feeding their chicks during the day. The chicks were first observed peeping out of the tunnels on 22 August 2023. At the end of September few juvenile birds were seen flying along with the adults foraging in the open sky. The Blue-cheeked Bee-eater is considered a passage migrant and winter visitor to the northwestern part of India and vagrant in Southern India, but this study confirmed its breeding in Southern India. We determined the population density and number of Eurasian Eagle-Owl in one of the regions of Russia (Republic of Mordovia). The work was carried out over sixteen years (2009–2024). The studies were conducted using methods of direction finding of vocalizing birds with subsequent search for nests and with the use of digital voice recorders. The Eurasian Eagle-Owl reliably lives in 16 out of 22 districts (72.7%). During our research, we built more than 60 artificial nests, in which Eurasian Eagle-Owls subsequently settled. In total, during the research period, 89 Eurasian Eagle-Owl habitats (of which 38 in four stationary sites), 125 nesting cases, and 214 chicks were identified. Over the entire period, the birds laid 282 eggs. Productivity for couples was 76%. The most successful years in terms of the number of eggs and chicks in nests were 2014, 2018, 2022, 2023. The density of the Eurasian Eagle-Owl population ranges from 3.1 to 5 pairs per 100 km2. The total population density in the open spaces of the region can reach 583 habitats. The presence of a large number of ravines with stands determines the high population density of Eurasian Eagle-Owl in Mordovia. Effective conservation is becoming more difficult as threats to wildlife increase. Natural resource managers are pressured to make difficult decisions with limited resources, and in many instances, large uncertainty. Scientists and managers tasked with the conservation of a species need tools to help guide efficient decision-making. Often, information for management decisions is insufficient. Tools that help to inform decision makers and address uncertainty are invaluable to effective conservation initiatives. The objective of our study was to create a model to best predict Eastern Newt (Notophthalmus viridescens viridescens) breeding occurrence across the northeastern United States. We estimated relationships between breeding newt field survey data and landscape-level covariates while accounting for imperfect detection. We then used those relationships to map expected newt breeding site occupancy across the northeastern United States. We find that newt breeding occupancy is inversely correlated to the amount of human influence in a landscape, highlighting a key existing threat to Eastern Newts that may be exacerbated by the introduction of novel pathogens, such as the fungal pathogen Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans. Simple Summary: The surface behaviours of humpback whales were studied in the presence of a whale-watching vessel at Nosy Be (Madagascar) during whale-watching activities, in order to characterise the ethogram of these animals. On the basis of our observations, Nosy Be could be considered mainly as a wintering and weaning ground for the calves. Data were collected from July to October 2018. Of the 75 total trips, humpback whales were observed 68 times and different types of aggregations were observed: Groups (33.82%), Mother–calf pairs (30.88%), Singles (27.94%), and Mother–calf and Escorts (7.35%). Individuals exhibited the following behaviours: Spouting, Breaching, Head Slap, Tail Throw, Tail Slap, Peck Slap, Spy-hopping, and Logging. Sighting data were evaluated by comparing the observed aggregations with reported behaviours, and vice versa. Among the most commonly observed behaviours, Spouting and Peck Slap were exhibited more in Groups, while Breaching was exhibited by all of the associations, with the exception of Singles. In Groups of more than two individuals, little or no social nor aggressive behaviours were observed, probably due to a lack of needing to attract the attention of other individuals. In partial migrant systems, where residents and migrants coexist within a population, residents are commonly predicted to gain a reproductive advantage over migrants through priority access to high‐quality territories and an earlier breeding start. Annual variation in reproductive benefits has been suggested to be important for the coexistence of both strategies in a population, as differences in wintering conditions experienced by the two strategies may result in a periodic reproductive advantage for migrants. However, the importance of spatial environmental variation for reproductive output in partially migrant populations remains largely unexplored. We investigated variation in the reproductive output of migrants and residents in a population of Swiss red kites (Milvus milvus) both temporally, across and within years, and spatially, along an elevational gradient. We gathered 4 years of reproductive data combined with 183 GPS‐derived full annual cycles from individuals breeding in the Swiss Alpine foothills. At low, but not high, elevations, residents produced more fledglings than migrants. We also found evidence for annual variation in the reproductive advantage of the two strategies. Furthermore, while reproductive output did decline with a later breeding start, there was no difference in the start of breeding between the two migration strategies. The results of this study suggest that differences in reproductive output between migrants and residents in partial migrant populations can vary both due to the use of spatially distinct overwintering grounds and because the strategies are differently affected by spatial variables in the breeding area, such as elevation. The study emphasizes that spatial and temporal variation in reproductive benefits must be considered when predicting how migratory species will respond to future environmental change. Culicoides oxystoma Kieffer (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) has been vectoring several arboviruses, protozoa and nematodes, leading to mortality and morbidity of livestock and wild ruminants in the tropics and subtropics. Insight into the bacterial communities associated with the vector species must be worked out. This work tries to inventorize the bacterial communities associated with this important vector species. Acquisition of gut microbiota may be the parental origin, while some are obtained through feeding during larval stages. Culicoides oxystoma possesses semi‐aquatic life cycle strategies for egg‐laying and larval survival. The bacteria associated with C. oxystoma were compared throughout (i) life stages: egg, larval instars, pupa, adult: male and female obtained from laboratory colony; (ii) field‐collected adult: male and age‐graded females; and (iii) natural breeding substrate and artificial rearing substrate. The culture‐dependent bacteria were identified by Sanger sequencing of 16S rRNA, and haemolytic bacteria were screened on blood agar. Results show that Firmicutes and Proteobacteria are the predominant Phyla, of which Bacillus spp. was the most abundant across the life stages. Across the life history, Bacillus cereus, Bacillus pumilus, Bacillus tropicus, Lysinibacillus sp. and Paenibacillus sp. were retrieved routinely. Bacillus cereus and Alcaligenes faecalis were detected in the lab‐reared specimens and shared between the natural breeding site and rearing medium. From the adults trapped across two locations, B. cereus, Bacillus flexus, A. faecalis, Enterococcus faecium and Pseudomonas sp. were isolated. The bacterial species associated with this vector may influence various physiological traits, such as vectorial capacity, digestion and larval development, which need further investigation. The Eurasian Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis schvedowi) is widely distributed across Russia and East Asia and is a second-class key protected wild animal species in China. There have been few studies on the migration routes of this species. Here, we present data from solar-powered satellite transmitters we placed on 4 goshawks at Changdao Island, Shangdaong Province, China, to follow them over the period of 2008–2013 and document their migratory routes and site fidelity. We obtained 7 spring and 9 autumn migration trajectories. We identified Shangdong and Anhui in China as wintering sites and Inner Mongolia, China, and Russia as breeding areas of Eurasian Goshawks. The spring migration flights covered 1,936 ± 847.08 km and took 27 ± 11.20 d (n = 3), and the autumn migration covered 2,382.50 ± 781.35 km and took 39 ± 15.56 d (n = 2). We found no significant difference in migration distance covered or number of traveling days between autumn and spring. We identified 7 stopover sites during spring and 21 stopover sites during autumn migration. Goshawks had strong site fidelity to breeding and wintering sites, and the arrival dates at wintering and breeding sites were similar among years. Our data will aid in the conservation of this species, including guiding decision-making and conservation action plans by providing basic data for the protection of goshawk populations and habitats.. Genetic diversity is a critical cornerstone of biodiversity and is a central goal in management and conservation biology. Such diversity has implications for survivability, adaptability, and resiliency of a species. This study aimed to determine levels of genetic diversity and population genetic structure in the Northern Black Swift (Cypseloides niger borealis). This species nests across western North America as far north as Canada and south into Mexico, migrating annually to wintering areas in western Brazil. Colonies occur in isolated areas where appropriate nesting habitat is available, and in many cases, colonies are widely separated from each other. Banding data revealed that adults of this long-lived species return to their same breeding colony annually for many years. Additionally, some females exhibit natal philopatry, returning to and successfully raising offspring at the colony where they were hatched. This allowed us to hypothesize that we might expect some amount of genetic structure in the samples we studied. The life history characteristics of this species suggest that breeding colonies might be more genetically differentiated than other migratory birds that tend to have limited population genetic structure across their ranges. We used newly developed species-specific microsatellite primers to examine levels of genetic diversity and connectivity among 6 Black Swift colonies in the western United States. Levels of genetic diversity were generally high (expected heterozygosity ranging from 0.67 to 0.75) and comparable across 3 breeding sites with sufficient sample sizes (N > 5). Principal coordinates analysis and STRUCTURE analysis showed no real clustering of individuals in regard to colonies, suggesting one panmictic metapopulation rather than multiple populations that are genetically distinct as we had previously hypothesized based on banding data. Context: With climate change causing unprecedented and rapid changes, conservation agencies need to establish the impacts on vulnerable and threatened species to prioritise actions to minimise threats associated with those impacts. Aims: Carnaby's Cockatoo (Zanda latirostris) is endemic to south-western Australia and this paper provides data to underpin future conservation management actions. Methods: We used data on the commencement of egg laying, breeding success, nestling condition, fledgling survival over their first year, and annual survival from the first year to construct a life table to examine the impacts of decreasing annual rainfall and increasing temperature in south-western Australia on the future viability of Carnaby's Cockatoos. Key results: Long-term survival of Carnaby's Cockatoos will be impacted by changes in rainfall, projected to be 16% drier in winter and up to 20% drier in spring, and by an increase in the number of days with maxima ≥35°C, conditions when the birds are unable to forage. Conclusions: This drying and warming is likely to lead to a further contraction in the range of Carnaby's Cockatoo. Implications: Conservation management needs to address revegetation of foraging and breeding areas, repairs to derelict natural hollows and their maintenance, and provision of artificial hollows. Management should concentrate on areas with the best prospects for species survival and recovery including in the areas identified in this paper based on life table analysis and mapped across regions. Carnaby's cockatoos (Zanda latirostris) are an endangered species that has experienced major loss of habitat over the past century. Proponents seeking land clearing approval that may impact Carnaby's cockatoos need to provide detailed habitat assessment. However, the current forage species list is outdated and generally restricted to the Swan Coastal Plain rather than the Carnaby's full distribution range. This study provides an updated forage list, including the Swan Coastal Plain and much of the Carnaby's breeding and non-breeding areas outside this region. Carnaby's cockatoos were captured and satellite tagged, at five breeding sites in the wheatbelt and Great Southern areas in Western Australia (between 2017 and 2022). Spatial data collected from the tags facilitated the identification of forage plants used by Carnaby's cockatoos. A total of 44 'new' native plant species were identified as Carnaby's cockatoo forage species, including five genera that have not previously been recorded. The updated forage list will inform proponents and regulators on the potential use of habitat patches by Carnaby's cockatoos, aiding the referral process and enabling the protection and conservation of important and diminishing habitat resources. Context: Carnaby's Cockatoo is an endangered species and the subject of a recovery plan. Aims: Our study examined movements of adult and fledgling Carnaby's Cockatoos from 11 breeding populations in southwestern Australia to establish where the cockatoos spent the non-breeding season (February–May) and sub-adult life-stage. Methods: Data were collected on point-to-point movements from re-sightings and recoveries of cockatoos individually marked with patagial tags or leg bands. Sites were mostly located in the wheatbelt of Western Australia. Distribution patterns in the breeding and non-breeding seasons, including nesting sites were derived from location data from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions' Threatened and Priority Database. Key results: After breeding, adults and their fledglings moved from breeding areas to higher rainfall areas closer to the west and south coasts of south-western Australia where the food supply is greater and more reliable. Sub-adult cockatoos roam much more widely than adults and utilize foraging habitat not previously recognized as being important to this species. Conclusions: Important foraging habitat and locations have been identified for breeding populations in the north and south of the range of Carnaby's Cockatoos. Implications: More conservation attention needs to be focussed on locating additional breeding populations, assessing the viability of these populations, and the extent and condition of their nesting and foraging habitat used during their non-breeding season. Conservation of Carnaby's Cockatoo depends on the maintenance of remnant native vegetation and revegetation of nesting and foraging habitat throughout its range. A study of adult and fledgling Carnaby's cockatoo movements from 11 breeding sites during the non-breeding season showed that sub-adult cockatoos roam much more widely than adults, foraging in habitat an order of magnitude more remote from breeding sites than previously reported. Multiple brooding is an important component of reproductive success in many birds and the frequency of this behaviour has been linked to intrinsic (e.g., age, experience) and extrinsic factors (e.g., weather and food availability). When extrinsic factors drive multiple brooding, it may be possible to identify conservation actions to support multiple-brooded species at risk. The Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica Linnaeus, 1758), is a multiple-brooded aerial insectivore, currently listed as Threatened on Canada's Species at Risk Act. We examined how weather, landcover, the presence of livestock and metal roofs (with associated heat) above nests affected the likelihood of multiple brooding in Barn Swallows nesting in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, Canada. We found that sites with a lower proportion of open habitats, including pastures, hayfields, and lawns, within the typical foraging range (i.e., 400 m) of nests, were associated with a higher probability of multiple brooding. Also, multiple brooding may be less likely in windy conditions. We found no effect of proportion of other landcover types, weather conditions, livestock or metal roofs above nests. When possible, decreasing the proportion of open habitats around breeding sites could result in higher rates of multiple brooding, and in turn, help slow population declines. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Data on the diets of Afro-Palearctic migratory birds outside their breeding grounds are scarce, despite the importance of feeding during the migratory journey. Here, we report on anecdotal findings from a study in which we used diet metabarcoding to analyse the composition of faecal samples from three Woodchat Shrikes Lanius senator collected during their spring migration stopover in Morocco. Metabarcoding revealed that the prey items most commonly consumed by the shrikes were camel ticks Hyalomma dromedarii. Additionally, in one sample we detected DNA from dromedary Camelus dromedarius, the presumed host of the ticks. Thus, metabarcoding can reveal novel information on the diet of migrating birds using non-invasive methods, as well as insights into secondary consumption by prey taxa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Early migratory return for territorial passerines is important, since earlier return results in better territories, and greater reproductive success. Many passerine studies have found that migratory return dates for first‐breeding‐season (SY) individuals was a week or less later than for older (ASY) birds. Many of both ASY and SY birds in these studies became territorial, although more SY than ASY birds became non‐territorial floaters. In this study of Wilson's Warblers, however, nearly all individuals returning early and becoming territorial were ASY birds, and very few were SY birds. However, second waves of returning Wilson's Warblers, containing both SY and ASY birds, returned about 3–5 weeks after the first migratory waves, and no males in those second waves ever became territorial. No later‐returning, second‐wave female initially ever became territorial either, although some subsequently became replacement mates for earlier‐returning males. Some male Wilson's Warblers were territorial, and others were non‐territorial, during all of their study‐area years. However, some males switched status over successive years, and migratory return when non‐territorial always was several weeks later than when territorial. Findings from this study indicated, for some males during some years, that non‐territoriality was more adaptive than was territoriality. This study's finding, of 3–5 week later migratory return waves for non‐territorial, than for territorial, Wilson's Warblers, supports findings by Stewart (1973), that Wilson's Warblers return to breeding grounds in two migratory waves. Findings from both studies may provide empirical evidence supporting Kokko's (1999) hypothesis that migratory birds, not competing for territories, should return to breeding grounds later, on their "cost‐minimizing dates." Waterbirds are highly mobile and have the ability to respond to environmental conditions opportunistically at multiple scales. Mobility is particularly crucial for aggregate‐nesting species dependent on breeding habitat in arid and semi‐arid wetlands, which can be ephemeral and unpredictable. We aimed to address knowledge gaps about movement routes for aggregate‐nesting nomadic waterbird species by tracking them in numbers sufficient to make robust assessment of their movement patterns. We hypothesised that analysis of long‐distance movements would identify common routes with consistent environmental features that would be useful as context for conservation management. We used GPS satellite telemetry to track the movements of 73 straw‐necked ibis (Threskiornis spinicollis) and 42 royal spoonbills (Platalea regia) over 7 years (2016‐2023). We used these data to identify long‐distance movements and to demarcate and characterise movement routes. We identified common routes used by both species, including a 'flyway' over 2000 km long, spanning Australia's Murray–Darling Basin from the south‐west to the north‐east. This flyway connects important breeding sites and is characterised by flat, open/unforested areas with low elevations of < 350 m and mid to high rainfall. The flyway corresponds to an area west of Australia's Great Dividing Range, which appears to act as a low‐permeability barrier to the movement of both species. Identification of an inland flyway for waterbirds in Australia provides important context for multi‐jurisdictional cooperation and strategic management. Where resources are limited, water and wetland management efforts (e.g., environmental watering) should be preferentially located within this route. Similarly, targeting threat mitigation within common movement routes may have disproportionate importance for long‐term population viability. Given the widespread distribution of similar species globally, there are likely to be other flyways worthy of scientific and conservation management attention that could be identified using our approach. Rüppell's vultures are critically endangered, primarily due to anthropogenic activities such as habitat degradation, climate change, and intentional and unintentional poisoning, which have led to the loss of nesting and breeding sites. To aid in the conservation and protection of these species, habitat evaluation and niche mapping are crucial. Species distribution modeling (SDM) is a valuable tool in conservation planning, providing insights into the ecological requirements of species under conservation concerns. This study employed an ensembling modeling approach to assess the habitat suitability and distribution of Rüppell's vultures across Kenya. We utilized four algorithms; Gradient Boosting Machine, Generalized Linear Model, Generalized Additive Model, and Random Forest. Data on Rüppell's vultures were sourced from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility, while key environmental variables influencing the species' distribution were obtained from WorldClim. The resultant species distribution map was overlaid with a conservation area map to evaluate the overlap between suitable habitats and existing protected areas. Our analysis identified suitable habitats in regions such as the Masai Mara Game Reserve, Mount Kenya National Park, Nairobi National Park, Tsavo East National Park, and Hell's Gate National Park, with the majority of these habitats located outside protected areas, except those within Hell's Gate National Park. Precipitation and elevation emerged as the primary environmental predictors of the distribution of Rüppell's vultures. Based on these findings, we recommend establishing vulture sanctuaries in suitable habitats and hotspots to enhance the conservation of Rüppell's vultures outside the protected areas. The success of ponds constructed to restore ecological infrastructure for pond‐breeding amphibians and benefit aquatic biodiversity depends on where and how they are built. We studied effects of pond and landscape characteristics, including connectivity, on metapopulation dynamics of 12 amphibian species in Switzerland. To understand the determinants of long‐term occupancy (here summarized as incidence), environmental effects on both colonization and persistence should be considered. We fitted dynamic occupancy models to 20 years of monitoring data on a pond construction program to quantify effects of pond and landscape characteristics and different connectivity metrics on colonization and persistence probabilities in constructed ponds. Connectivity to existing populations explained dynamics better than structural connectivity metrics, and simple metrics (distance to the nearest neighbor population, population density) were useful surrogates for dispersal kernel‐weighted metrics commonly used in metapopulation theory. Population connectivity mediated the persistence of conservation target species in new ponds, suggesting source–sink dynamics in newly established populations. Population density captured this effect well and could be used by practitioners for site selection. Ponds created where there were 2–4 occupied ponds within a radius of ∼0.5 km had >3.5 times higher incidence of target species (median) than isolated ponds. Species had individual preferences regarding pond characteristics, but breeding sites with larger (≥100 m2) total water surface area, that temporarily dried, and that were in surroundings with maximally 50% forest benefitted multiple target species. Birds are among the organisms most impacted by plant invasions, the effects of which are particularly conspicuous during the breeding season. Birds can incorrectly assess the suitability of large, invasive hogweeds Heracleum sp. in south‐eastern Poland when selecting nesting sites early in spring when the developing invaders do not yet differ substantially in form from the rest of the vegetation.One would expect lower bird breeding success in areas with invasive hogweeds. Furthermore, this may shift bird community composition towards species with filtered traits, which may then be reflected in various measures of diversity. To assess these expectations, we conducted bird surveys at 74 sites, arranged as 37 pairs (with invasive Heracleum vs. control).The presence of Heracleum was associated with lower bird taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity. Functional richness (calculated based on species' reproductive traits) was also lower at sites with these invaders. The species detected at Heracleum sites were characterised by traits associated with rapid breeding, for example, small clutches, short incubation periods and short fledging periods.We show that the bird community at sites with hogweeds became less diverse and composed of random species sharing similar reproductive traits. Bird communities with low diversity at Heracleum sites tended to exhibit a common trait syndrome. These patterns provide insights into the mechanisms of how invasive plants may lead to the loss of some traits and species in bird communities. Anaerobic bacteria and methanogenic archaea at municipal landfill dumping sites play a vital role in the landfill ecology, waste degradation, global warming and climate change. Although landfill works as a cheap way of solid waste management, unmanaged landfill plays a significant role in spreading pollutants and pathogens in natural ecosystems. The genera Clostridium and Paraclostridium are important groups of anaerobic microbes from a public and environmental health perspective. In the present study, we have isolated different species of Clostridium and Paraclostridium from landfill leachate and performed a comparative analysis to understand their role in landfill ecology and public health. Our data indicate that the anoxic zone of landfills acts as a breeding ground for different species of Clostridium and Paraclostridium, including pathogenic species like C. sporogenes and C. argentinense and leachate, plays a crucial role in the spread of Clostridium in soil and water ecosystem and acts as one of the primary sources of a cause of infection in field workers. We also reported that VITEK and MALDI-TOF/MS are not ideal ways to identify Clostridium at the species level, and 16S rRNA gene sequencing should be the method of choice. In the current study, we also demonstrated that members of the genus Clostridium showed better growth response on Brain Heart Infusion (BHI) and Gifu Anaerobic Medium (GAM), and they can be one of the alternatives to existing media for cultivation and physiological studies of Clostridium. Seabirds are biovectors that transport large concentrations of nutrients from their marine feeding areas to terrestrial breeding grounds. Here, we used subfossil cladoceran assemblages to assess if, and how, changes in the world's largest colony of Leach's Storm-Petrels affected the structure of Cladocera assemblages over the past ∼1700 years. Using sediment cores from four ponds impacted by Leach's Storm-Petrel colonies on Baccalieu Island (NL, Canada), we observed a consistent transition in cladoceran assemblages from benthic/littoral to pelagic taxa in association with high seabird presence. This shift aligns with previously published limnological changes that tracked the growth of the colony. Compared to trends in sedimentary chlorophyll-a, pelagic cladoceran taxa lagged behind algal shifts driven by seabird activity. The main drivers of cladoceran assemblage shifts were likely alterations to the physical habitat structure and food availability driven by seabird inputs. Furthermore, deposition of calcium from seabirds may have also contributed to changing the composition of cladoceran communities. With 10 species described, Triglyphus Loew 1840 is a rarely recorded genus of hoverflies (Diptera Syrphidae) from the Holarctic and Australian Regions. The biology of Triglyphus larvae is practically unknown as the only information available is that they prey on aphids in galls on Artemisia vulgaris L. (Asteraceae). We here report the first morphological description of the immature stages of a Triglyphus species and confirm their breeding site. Adults of Triglyphus primus Loew 1840 can be found in forests fringes, gardens, and on open grounds in the Palaearctic Region. Larvae of T. primus were collected preying on the aphid Cryptosiphum artemisiae Buckton 1879 (Hemiptera Aphididae) in galls on A. vulgaris in Denmark, in 2023. The first (L1) and the third (L3) larval instars, the puparium, head skeleton, and posterior respiratory process (PRP) were studied and analysed by using stereomicroscopic and scanning electron microscope (SEM) techniques. The chaetotaxy of the L3 and the types of sensilla are also described and illustrated. A taxonomic diagnosis of the larvae of Triglyphus is proposed to distinguish it from larvae of other syrphid genera by using the labrum shape in the head skeleton. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND: The incompatible insect technique (IIT) has been used for Aedes mosquito population suppression to curb the transmission of dengue. However, its wide application is limited owing to the low output of male mosquitoes and the risk of population replacement from the release of fertile Wolbachia‐infected females. This study aims to improve IIT efficiency for broader adoption. RESULTS: We assessed the impact of 10% pyriproxyfen (PPF) sticky powder exposure on Wolbachia (from Culex molestus)‐transinfected Aedes albopictus Guangzhou line (GUA line) (GC) mosquitoes. We found that the exposure caused chronic toxicity in adult mosquitoes without affecting the cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI)‐inducing capability of males. The PPF‐contaminated GC females exhibited significant sterilization and the ability to disseminate lethal doses of PPF to breeding sites. Subsequently, we conducted a field trial combining PPF with IIT aiming to suppress the Ae. albopictus population. This combined approach, termed boosted IIT (BIIT), showed a notable enhancement in population suppression efficiency. The improved efficacy of BIIT was attributed to the dispersion of PPF particles in the field via the released PPF‐contaminated male mosquitoes. During the BIIT field trial, no Wolbachia wPip‐positive Ae. albopictus larvae were detected, indicating the effective elimination of the risk of Wolbachia‐induced population replacement. Additionally, the field trial of BIIT against Ae. albopictus resulted in the suppression of the nontarget mosquito species Culex quinquefasciatus. CONCLUSION: Our results highlight the remarkable efficiency and feasibility of combining IIT with PPF in suppressing mosquito populations, facilitating the widespread implementation of IIT‐based management of mosquito‐borne diseases. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry. The COVID-19 lockdown opened an opportunity to assess the response of animal populations to diminished human activities. As coastal dunes face many disturbances caused by increasing human activities, we assessed the effect of reduced human mobility on coastal bird diversity and abundance and on the Least Tern nest failure rate on an island in the southern Gulf of Mexico before, during, and after the lockdown to test the hypothesis that diminished tourism and recreational activities can contribute to the conservation of coastal ecosystems by increasing species richness and abundance and decreasing the nest failure rate. We used data from 2016 to 2021 to estimate nesting failure probabilities using Bernard's cumulative distribution function, Kaplan‒Meier tests, and Cox regression for hazard rates. Bird species richness and abundance were compared using Kruskal‒Wallis rank tests. Factors related to breeding site preference were assessed using the BIOENV method. The lockdown did not affect species richness, but bird abundance was inversely related to pedestrian traffic (rho = − 0.908, p < 0.0001, n = 48). Nest failure decreased during the lockdown in 2020 (p < 0.0001) due to reduced presence of people, which allowed occupancy of sites never used before. During the lockdown, the proportion of nest failure was lower than that in the other sampling years (p < 0.0001, φ range = − 0.445 to − 0.278). Accordingly, diminished pedestrian traffic can increase nest survival (log-rank p < 0.0001). SUMMARY: The Pati duck, originating in Assam, India, is the first recognised native duck breed in the country. Widely distributed across Assam, this breed is crucial for generating income, employment and providing nutritional security to the resource-poor rural population. Traditionally reared by the Assamese people, the Pati duck holds a rich cultural heritage and contributes significantly to the local economy. However, scientific research on its improvement and conservation remains limited, posing a threat to its sustainability. This review aims to address this gap by evaluating existing studies on the Pati duck's development and conservation. Key challenges include habitat loss due to agricultural expansion, genetic erosion from crossbreeding, and insufficient scientific breeding programmes. Additionally, the lack of systematic disease management practices exacerbates these issues. The review highlights the necessity for integrated conservation strategies, such as habitat restoration to protect natural breeding grounds, community engagement to promote traditional rearing practices and the establishment of dedicated breeding centres to maintain genetic purity. By providing a comprehensive analysis of the current status and challenges of the Pati duck, this paper offers actionable recommendations for policymakers, researchers and local communities to ensure the sustainable development and conservation of this valuable indigenous breed. The conservation of insects, particularly endangered species such as the Apollo butterfly, is a pressing global concern. Understanding the habitat requirements and factors influencing species occupancy is crucial for designing effective conservation strategies. We focused on investigating the habitat characteristics expected to affect the occupancy of the nationally endangered Apollo butterfly in Southwest Finland. We conducted field surveys and GIS analysis to assess the impact of larval host plant and adult nectar resources, habitat encroachment, elevation, connectivity, and spatial variation on Apollo larval occupancy in rocky outcrop habitats. We found that rocky outcrops with abundant host plants and those less isolated from nectar patches play a significant role in supporting Apollo reproduction, whereas encroachment, specifically increased tree volume, negatively affected occupancy. We additionally observed spatial variation in occupancy across different blocks within the study area. Our findings emphasise the importance of resource availability for Apollo butterflies and highlight the dynamic nature of their habitat requirements. Maintaining a network of intact rocky outcrops with suitable resources is essential for the long-term persistence of the Apollo butterfly population in the region. Implications for insect conservation: Our research underscores the critical need to protect and restore habitats for the Apollo butterfly, particularly by addressing threats such as habitat encroachment and construction projects that pose risks to their breeding sites.
