Stable $^{205}$Tl ions have the lowest known energy threshold for capturing electron neutrinos ($\nu_e$) of ${ E}_{\nu_e}\ge50.6$\,keV. The Lorandite Experiment (LOREX), proposed in the 1980s, aims at obtaining the longtime averaged solar neutrino flux by utilizing natural deposits of Tl-bearing lorandite ores. To determine the $\nu_e$ capture cross section, it is required to know the strength of the weak transition connecting the ground state of $^{205}$Tl and the 2.3 keV first excited state in $^{205}$Pb. The only way to experimentally address this transition is to measure the bound-state beta decay ($\beta_{b}$) of fully ionized $\mathrm{^{205}Tl^{81+}}$ ions. After three decades of meticulous preparation, the half-life of the $\beta_{b}$ decay of $\mathrm{^{205}Tl^{81+}}$ has been measured to be $291_{-27}^{+33}$ days using the Experimental Storage Ring (ESR) at GSI, Darmstadt. The longer measured half-life compared to theoretical estimates reduces the expected signal-to-noise ratio in the LOREX, thus challenging its feasibility.

A large number of R-matrix calculations of electron impact excitation for heavy elements (Z > 70) have been performed in recent years for applications in fusion and astrophysics research. With the expanding interest in heavy ions due to kilonova (KN) events such as AT2017gfo and GRB230307A, this new data can be utilised for the diagnosis and study of observed KN spectra. In this work recently computed electron-impact excitation effective collision strengths are used, for the first three ionisation stages of tungsten (W, Z = 74), platinum (Pt, Z = 78) and gold (Au, Z = 79), to construct basic collisional radiative models tailored for the late stage nebular phases of KN. Line luminosities are calculated at a range of electron temperatures and densities and the strengths of these lines for a representative ion mass are compared. For the case of W III, these optically thin intensities are additionally used to constrain the mass of this ion in both AT2017gfo and GRB230307A. Comparing with theoretical predictions of nucleosynthesis yields from neutron star merger simulations, broad agreement with the inferred ion masses of W is found. Furthermore, we highlight the value of W measurements by showing that the abundance of other groups of elements and outflow properties are constrained by exploiting theoretically motivated correlations between the abundance of W and that of lanthanides or third r-process peak elements.

Radioactive nuclei with lifetimes on the order of millions of years can reveal the formation history of the Sun and active nucleosynthesis occurring at the time and place of its birth. Among such nuclei whose decay signatures are found in the oldest meteorites, $^{205}$Pb is a powerful example, as it is produced exclusively by slow neutron captures (the s process), with most being synthesized in asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. However, making accurate abundance predictions for $^{205}$Pb has so far been impossible because the weak decay rates of $^{205}$Pb and $^{205}$Tl are very uncertain at stellar temperatures. To constrain these decay rates, we measured for the first time the bound-state $\beta^-$ decay of fully ionized $^{205}$Tl$^{81+}$, an exotic decay mode that only occurs in highly charged ions. The measured half-life is 4.7 times longer than the previous theoretical estimate and our 10% experimental uncertainty has eliminated the main nuclear-physics limitation. With new, experimentally backed decay rates, we used AGB stellar models to calculate $^{205}$Pb yields. Propagating those yields with basic galactic chemical evolution (GCE) and comparing with the $^{205}$Pb/$^{204}$Pb ratio from meteorites, we determined the isolation time of solar material inside its parent molecular cloud. We find positive isolation times that are consistent with the other s-process short-lived radioactive nuclei found in the early Solar System. Our results reaffirm the site of the Sun's birth as a long-lived, giant molecular cloud and support the use of the $^{205}$Pb--$^{205}$Tl decay system as a chronometer in the early Solar System., Comment: 21 pages and 11 figures/tables. Challenges in scaling up noble-liquid time projection chambers prompted the exploration of new detection concepts. The liquid hole-multiplier (LHM) was introduced as a potential component, enabling the detection of ionization electrons and VUV photons. Prior studies focused on perforated electrodes coated with CsI immersed in the liquid and electroluminescence amplification produced on a bubble trapped underneath. However, the performance was hindered by electron transfer across the liquid-gas interface. Here, we explored a bubble-free variant, placing a CsI-coated Thick Gas Electron Multiplier electrode below the liquid-gas interface to improve the transfer efficiency across it. Results show >5-fold improvement in the S1'/S2 ratio (a proxy for the photon detection efficiency (PDE)) compared to the bubble-assisted LHM. Although the achieved PDE is still below expectation ($\sim$4%), we propose potential improvements to enhance the performance of this detector., Comment: 41 pages, 12 figures

The NEXT-White detector, a high-pressure gaseous xenon time projection chamber, demonstrated the excellence of this technology for future neutrinoless double beta decay searches using photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) to measure energy and silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) to extract topology information. This analysis uses $^{83m}\text{Kr}$ data from the NEXT-White detector to measure and understand the energy resolution that can be obtained with the SiPMs, rather than with PMTs. The energy resolution obtained of (10.9 $\pm$ 0.6) $\%$, full-width half-maximum, is slightly larger than predicted based on the photon statistics resulting from very low light detection coverage of the SiPM plane in the NEXT-White detector. The difference in the predicted and measured resolution is attributed to poor corrections, which are expected to be improved with larger statistics. Furthermore, the noise of the SiPMs is shown to not be a dominant factor in the energy resolution and may be negligible when noise subtraction is applied appropriately, for high-energy events or larger SiPM coverage detectors. These results, which are extrapolated to estimate the response of large coverage SiPM planes, are promising for the development of future, SiPM-only, readout planes that can offer imaging and achieve similar energy resolution to that previously demonstrated with PMTs.

Contrastive learning (CL) has emerged as a potent tool for building meaningful latent representations of galaxy properties across a broad spectrum of wavelengths, ranging from optical and infrared to radio frequencies. These representations facilitate a variety of downstream tasks, including galaxy classification, similarity searches, and parameter estimation, which is why they are often referred to as foundation models. In this study, we employ CL on the latest extended DR from CALIFA survey, which encompasses 895 galaxies with enhanced spatial resolution. We demonstrate that CL can be applied to IFU surveys, even with small training sets, to meaningful embedding where galaxies are well-separated based on their physical properties. We discover that the strongest correlations in the embedding space are observed with the EW of Ha morphology, stellar metallicity, age, stellar surface mass density, the [NII]/Ha ratio, and stellar mass, in descending order of correlation strength. Additionally, we illustrate the feasibility of unsupervised separation of galaxy populations along the SFMS, successfully identifying the BC and the RS in a two-cluster scenario, and the GV population in a three-cluster scenario. Our findings indicate that galaxy luminosity profiles have minimal impact on the construction of the embedding space, suggesting that morphology and spectral features play a more significant role in distinguishing between galaxy populations. Moreover, we explore the use of CL for detecting variations in galaxy population distributions across different environments, including voids, clusters, filaments and walls. Nonetheless, we acknowledge the limitations of the CL and our specific training set in detecting subtle differences in galaxy properties, such as the presence of an AGN or other minor scale variations that exceed the scope of primary parameters like stellar mass or morphology., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures

The imaging of individual Ba$^{2+}$ ions in high pressure xenon gas is one possible way to attain background-free sensitivity to neutrinoless double beta decay and hence establish the Majorana nature of the neutrino. In this paper we demonstrate selective single Ba$^{2+}$ ion imaging inside a high-pressure xenon gas environment. Ba$^{2+}$ ions chelated with molecular chemosensors are resolved at the gas-solid interface using a diffraction-limited imaging system with scan area of 1$\times$1~cm$^2$ located inside 10~bar of xenon gas. This new form of microscopy represents an important enabling step in the development of barium tagging for neutrinoless double beta decay searches in $^{136}$Xe, as well as a new tool for studying the photophysics of fluorescent molecules and chemosensors at the solid-gas interface.

The aim of the present work is a state-by-state analysis of possible E1 and M1 transitions in $^{58}$Ni with a high-resolution (p,p') experiment at 295 MeV and very forward angles including 0{\deg} and a comparison to results from studies of the dipole strength with the $(\gamma,\gamma')$ and (e,e') reactions. The E1 and M1 cross sections of individual peaks in the spectra are deduced with a multipole decomposition analysis and converted to reduced E1 and spin-M1 transition strengths using the virtual photon and the unit cross-section method, respectively. Despite the high level density good agreement is obtained for the deduced excitation energies of J = 1 states in the three types of experiments indicating that the same states are excited. The B(E1) and B(M1) strengths from the $(\gamma,\gamma^\prime)$ experiments are systematically smaller than in the present work because of the lack of information on branching ratios to lower-lying excited states and the competition of particle emission. Fair agreement with the B(M1) strengths extracted from the (e,e') data is obtained after removal of E1 transitions uniquely assigned in the present work, which belong to a low-energy toroidal mode with unusual properties mimicking M1 excitations in electron scattering. The experimental M1 strength distribution is compared to large-scale shell-model calculations with the effective GXPF1A and KB3G interactions. They provide a good description of the isospin splitting and the running sum of the M1 strength. A quenching factor 0.74 for the spin-isospin part of the M1 operator is needed to attain quantitative agreement with the data., Comment: 16 pages, 15 figures

We report on the first observation of electroluminescence amplification with a Microstrip Plate immersed in liquid xenon. The electroluminescence of the liquid, induced by alpha-particles, was observed in an intense non-uniform electric field in the vicinity of 8-$\mu$m narrow anode strips interlaced with wider cathode ones, deposited on the same side of a glass substrate. The electroluminescence yield in the liquid reached a value of $(35.5 \pm 2.6)$ VUV photons/electron. We propose ways of enhancing this response with more appropriate microstructures towards their potential incorporation as sensing elements in single-phase noble-liquid detectors., Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures, prepared for submission to JINST

We aim at developing a robust methodology for constraining the luminosity and stellar mass functions (LMFs) of galaxies by solely using data from multi-filter surveys and testing the potential of these techniques for determining the evolution of the miniJPAS LMFs up to $z\sim0.7$. Stellar mass and $B$-band luminosity for each of the miniJPAS galaxies are constrained using an updated version of the SED-fitting code MUFFIT, whose values are based on composite stellar population models and the probability distribution functions of the miniJPAS photometric redshifts. Galaxies are classified through the stellar mass versus rest-frame colour diagram corrected for extinction. Different stellar mass and luminosity completeness limits are set and parametrised as a function of redshift, for setting limits in our flux-limited sample ($r_\mathrm{SDSS}<22$). The miniJPAS LMFs are parametrised according to Schechter-like functions via a novel maximum likelihood method accounting for uncertainties, degeneracies, probabilities, completeness, and priors. NEXT-100 is currently being constructed at the Laboratorio Subterr\'aneo de Canfranc in the Spanish Pyrenees and will search for neutrinoless double beta decay using a high-pressure gaseous time projection chamber (TPC) with 100 kg of xenon. Charge amplification is carried out via electroluminescence (EL) which is the process of accelerating electrons in a high electric field region causing secondary scintillation of the medium proportional to the initial charge. The NEXT-100 EL and cathode regions are made from tensioned hexagonal meshes of 1 m diameter. This paper describes the design, characterization, and installation of these parts for NEXT-100. Simulations of the electric field are performed to model the drift and amplification of ionization electrons produced in the detector under various EL region alignments and rotations. Measurements of the electrostatic breakdown voltage in air characterize performance under high voltage conditions and identify breakdown points. The electrostatic deflection of the mesh is quantified and fit to a first-principles mechanical model. Measurements were performed with both a standalone test EL region and with the NEXT-100 EL region before its installation in the detector. Noble element time projection chambers are a leading technology for rare event detection in physics, such as for dark matter and neutrinoless double beta decay searches. Time projection chambers typically assign event position in the drift direction using the relative timing of prompt scintillation and delayed charge collection signals, allowing for reconstruction of an absolute position in the drift direction. In this paper, alternate methods for assigning event drift distance via quantification of electron diffusion in a pure high pressure xenon gas time projection chamber are explored. Data from the NEXT-White detector demonstrate the ability to achieve good position assignment accuracy for both high- and low-energy events. Using point-like energy deposits from $^{83\mathrm{m}}$Kr calibration electron captures ($E\sim45$keV), the position of origin of low-energy events is determined to $2~$cm precision with bias $< 1$mm. A convolutional neural network approach is then used to quantify diffusion for longer tracks (E$\geq$1.5MeV), yielding a precision of 3cm on the event barycenter. The precision achieved with these methods indicates the feasibility energy calibrations of better than 1% FWHM at Q$_{\beta\beta}$ in pure xenon, as well as the potential for event fiducialization in large future detectors using an alternate method that does not rely on primary scintillation., Comment: 18 pages, 16 figures

Building on a recent construction of G. Plebanek and the third named author, it is shown that a complemented subspace of a Banach lattice need not be linearly isomorphic to a Banach lattice. This solves a long-standing open question in Banach lattice theory.

Unsupervised outlier detection constitutes a crucial phase within data analysis and remains a dynamic realm of research. A good outlier detection algorithm should be computationally efficient, robust to tuning parameter selection, and perform consistently well across diverse underlying data distributions. We introduce One-Class Boundary Peeling, an unsupervised outlier detection algorithm. One-class Boundary Peeling uses the average signed distance from iteratively-peeled, flexible boundaries generated by one-class support vector machines. One-class Boundary Peeling has robust hyperparameter settings and, for increased flexibility, can be cast as an ensemble method. In synthetic data simulations One-Class Boundary Peeling outperforms all state of the art methods when no outliers are present while maintaining comparable or superior performance in the presence of outliers, as compared to benchmark methods. One-Class Boundary Peeling performs competitively in terms of correct classification, AUC, and processing time using common benchmark data sets.

Dual-phase liquid-xenon time projection chambers (LXe TPCs) deploying a few tonnes of liquid are presently leading the search for WIMP dark matter. Scaling these detectors to 10-fold larger fiducial masses, while improving their sensitivity to low-mass WIMPs presents difficult challenges in detector design. Several groups are considering a departure from current schemes, towards either single-phase liquid-only TPCs, or dual-phase detectors where the electroluminescence region consists of patterned electrodes. Here, we discuss the possible use of Thick Gaseous Electron Multipliers (THGEMs) coated with a VUV photocathode and immersed in LXe as a building block in such designs. We focus on the transfer efficiencies of ionization electrons and photoelectrons emitted from the photocathode through the electrode holes, and show experimentally that efficiencies approaching 100 % can be achieved with realistic voltage settings. The observed voltage dependence of the transfer efficiencies is consistent with electron transport simulations once diffusion and charging-up effects are included.

We use Bayesian inference and nested sampling to develop a non-parametric method to reconstruct the primordial power spectrum $P_{\mathcal{R}}(k)$ from Large Scale Structure (LSS) data. The performance of the method is studied by applying it to simulations of the clustering of two different object catalogues, low-$z$ (ELGs) and high-$z$ (QSOs), and considering two different photometric errors. These object clusterings are derived from different templates of the primordial power spectrum motivated by models of inflation: the Standard Model power law characterized by the two parameters $A_s$ and $n_s$; a local feature template; and a global oscillatory template. Our reconstruction method involves sampling $N$ knots in the log $\{k,P_{\mathcal{R}}(k)\}$ plane. We use two statistical tests to examine the reconstructions for signs of primordial features: a global test comparing the evidences and a novel local test quantifying the power of the hypothesis test between the power law model and the marginalized probability over $N$ model. The method shows good performance in all scenarios considered. In particular, the tests show no feature detection for the SM. The method is able to detect power spectrum deviations at a level of $\approx 2\%$ for all considered features, combining either the low-$z$ or the high-$z$ redshift bins. Other scenarios with different redshift bins, photometric errors, feature amplitudes and detection levels are also discussed. In addition, we include a first application to real data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Luminous Red Galaxy Data Release 4 (SDSS LRG 04), finding no preference for deviations from the primordial power law. We present the discovery and timing solutions of four millisecond pulsars (MSPs) discovered in the Arecibo 327 MHz Drift-Scan Pulsar Survey. Three of these pulsars are in binary systems, consisting of a redback (PSR J2055+1545), a black widow (PSR J1630+3550), and a neutron star-white dwarf binary (PSR J2116+1345). The fourth MSP, PSR J2212+2450, is isolated. We present the multiyear timing solutions as well as polarization properties across a range of radio frequencies for each pulsar. We perform a multiwavelength search for emission from these systems and find an optical counterpart for PSR J2055+1545 in Gaia DR3, as well as a gamma-ray counterpart for PSR J2116+1345 with the Fermi-LAT telescope. Despite the close colocation of PSR J2055+1545 with a Fermi source, we are unable to detect gamma-ray pulsations, likely due to the large orbital variability of the system. This work presents the first two binaries found by this survey with orbital periods shorter than a day; we expect to find more in the 40% of the survey data that have yet to be searched., Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables. The NEXT experiment aims at the sensitive search of the neutrinoless double beta decay in $^{136}$Xe, using high-pressure gas electroluminescent time projection chambers. The NEXT-White detector is the first radiopure demonstrator of this technology, operated in the Laboratorio Subterr\'aneo de Canfranc. Achieving an energy resolution of 1% FWHM at 2.6 MeV and further background rejection by means of the topology of the reconstructed tracks, NEXT-White has been exploited beyond its original goals in order to perform a neutrinoless double beta decay search. The analysis considers the combination of 271.6 days of $^{136}$Xe-enriched data and 208.9 days of $^{136}$Xe-depleted data. A detailed background modeling and measurement has been developed, ensuring the time stability of the radiogenic and cosmogenic contributions across both data samples. Limits to the neutrinoless mode are obtained in two alternative analyses: a background-model-dependent approach and a novel direct background-subtraction technique, offering results with small dependence on the background model assumptions. With a fiducial mass of only 3.50$\pm$0.01 kg of $^{136}$Xe-enriched xenon, 90% C.L. lower limits to the neutrinoless double beta decay are found in the T$_{1/2}^{0\nu}>5.5\times10^{23}-1.3\times10^{24}$ yr range, depending on the method. The presented techniques stand as a proof-of-concept for the searches to be implemented with larger NEXT detectors.

We present the state-of-the-art single-zone nuclear reaction network WinNet that is capable of calculating the nucleosynthetic yields of a large variety of astrophysical environments and conditions. This ranges from the calculation of the primordial nucleosynthesis, where only a few nuclei are considered, to the ejecta of neutron star mergers with several thousands of involved nuclei. Here we describe the underlying physics and implementation details of the reaction network. We additionally present the numerical implementation of two different integration methods, the implicit Euler method and Gears method along with their advantages and disadvantages. We furthermore describe basic example cases of thermodynamic conditions that we provide together with the network and demonstrate the reliability of the code by using simple test cases. With this publication, WinNet is publicly available and open source at GitHub and Zenodo.

The search for neutrinoless double beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) remains one of the most compelling experimental avenues for the discovery in the neutrino sector. Electroluminescent gas-phase time projection chambers are well suited to $0\nu\beta\beta$ searches due to their intrinsically precise energy resolution and topological event identification capabilities. Scalability to ton- and multi-ton masses requires readout of large-area electroluminescent regions with fine spatial resolution, low radiogenic backgrounds, and a scalable data acquisition system. This paper presents a detector prototype that records event topology in an electroluminescent xenon gas TPC via VUV image-intensified cameras. This paper is part of large effort within the J-PAS collaboration that aims to classify point-like sources in miniJPAS, which were observed in 60 optical bands over $\sim$ 1 deg$^2$ in the AEGIS field. We developed two algorithms based on artificial neural networks (ANN) to classify objects into four categories: stars, galaxies, quasars at low redshift ($z < 2.1)$, and quasars at high redshift ($z \geq 2.1$). As inputs, we used miniJPAS fluxes for one of the classifiers (ANN$_1$) and colours for the other (ANN$_2$). The ANNs were trained and tested using mock data in the first place. We studied the effect of augmenting the training set by creating hybrid objects, which combines fluxes from stars, galaxies, and quasars. Nevertheless, the augmentation processing did not improve the score of the ANN. We also evaluated the performance of the classifiers in a small subset of the SDSS DR12Q superset observed by miniJPAS. In the mock test set, the f1-score for quasars at high redshift with the ANN$_1$ (ANN$_2$) are $0.99$ ($0.99$), $0.93$ ($0.92$), and $0.63$ ($0.57$) for $17 < r \leq 20$, $20 < r \leq 22.5$, and $22.5 < r \leq 23.6$, respectively, where $r$ is the J-PAS rSDSS band. In the case of low-redshift quasars, galaxies, and stars, we reached $0.97$ ($0.97$), $0.82$ ($0.79$), and $0.61$ ($0.58$); $0.94$ ($0.94$), $0.90$ ($0.89$), and $0.81$ ($0.80$); and $1.0$ ($1.0$), $0.96$ ($0.94$), and $0.70$ ($0.52$) in the same r bins. In the SDSS DR12Q superset miniJPAS sample, the weighted f1-score reaches 0.87 (0.88) for objects that are mostly within $20 < r \leq 22.5$. Finally, we estimate the number of point-like sources that are quasars, galaxies, and stars in miniJPAS.

Advances in quantum engineering have enabled the design, measurement, and precise control of synthetic condensed matter systems. The platform of superconducting circuits offers two particular capabilities: flexible connectivity of circuit elements that enables a variety of lattice geometries, and circuit nonlinearity that provides access to strongly interacting physics. Separately, these features have allowed for the creation of curved-space lattices and the realization of strongly correlated phases and dynamics in one-dimensional chains and square lattices. Missing in this suite of simulations is the simultaneous integration of interacting particles into lattices with unique band dispersions, such as dispersionless flat bands. An ideal building block for flat-band physics is the Aharonov-Bohm cage: a single plaquette of a lattice whose band structure consists entirely of flat bands. Here, we experimentally construct an Aharonov-Bohm cage and observe the localization of a single photon, the hallmark of all-bands-flat physics. Upon placing an interaction-bound photon pair into the cage, we see a delocalized walk indicating an escape from Aharonov-Bohm caging. We further find that a variation of caging persists for two particles initialized on opposite sites of the cage. These results mark the first experimental observation of a quantum walk that becomes delocalized due to interactions and establish superconducting circuits for studies of flat-band-lattice dynamics with strong interactions., Comment: 8 + 9 pages, 4 + 12 figures, 0 + 2 tables; modified title, added a supplementary figure, and modified the definition used for tunneling time

We present a tunable metal ion beam that delivers controllable ion currents in the picoamp range for testing of dry-phase ion sensors. Ion beams are formed by sequential atomic evaporation and single or multiple electron impact ionization, followed by acceleration into a sensing region. Controllability of the ionic charge state is achieved through tuning of electrode potentials that influence the retention time in the ionization region. Barium, lead, and cobalt samples have been used to test the system, with ion currents identified and quantified using a quadrupole mass analyzer. Realization of a clean $\mathrm{Ba^{2+}}$ ion beam within a bench-top system represents an important technical advance toward the development and characterization of barium tagging systems for neutrinoless double beta decay searches in xenon gas. This system also provides a testbed for investigation of novel ion sensing methodologies for environmental assay applications, with dication beams of Pb$^{2+}$ and Cd$^{2+}$ also demonstrated for this purpose.

Even though the electromagnetic counterpart AT2017gfo to the binary neutron star merger GW170817 is powered by the radioactive decay of r-process nuclei, only few tentative identifications of light r-process elements have been made so far. One of the major limitations for the identification of heavy nuclei is incomplete or missing atomic data. While substantial progress has been made on lanthanide atomic data over the last few years, for actinides there has been less emphasis, with the first complete set of opacity data only recently published. We perform atomic structure calculations of neodymium $(Z=60)$ as well as the corresponding actinide uranium $(Z=92)$. Using two different codes (FAC and HFR) for the calculation of the atomic data, we investigate the accuracy of the calculated data (energy levels and electric dipole transitions) and their effect on kilonova opacities. For the FAC calculations, we optimise the local central potential and the number of included configurations and use a dedicated calibration technique to improve the agreement between theoretical and available experimental atomic energy levels (AELs). For ions with vast amounts of experimental data available, the presented opacities agree quite well with previous estimations. On the other hand, the optimisation and calibration method cannot be used for ions with only few available AELs. For these cases, where no experimental nor benchmarked calculations are available, a large spread in the opacities estimated from the atomic data obtained with the various atomic structure codes is observed.We find that the opacity of uranium is almost double the neodymium opacity., Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures. A proof of principle of a novel concept for event recording in dual-phase liquid xenon detectors -- the Floating Hole Multiplier (FHM) -- is presented. It is shown that a standard Thick Gaseous Electron Multiplier (THGEM), freely floating on the liquid xenon surface permits extraction of electrons from the liquid to the gas. Secondary scintillation induced by the extracted electrons in the THGEM holes as well as in the uniform field above it was observed. The first results with the FHM indicate that the concept of floating electrodes may offer new prospects for large-scale dual-phase detectors, for dark matter searches in particular., Comment: 12 pages

Though treatment integrity measurement is important for research intended to promote social and behavioral outcomes of children at risk for emotional and behavioral disorders (EBDs) in early childhood settings, measurement gaps exist in the field. This paper reports on the development and preliminary psychometric assessment of the treatment integrity measure for early childhood settings (TIMECS), an observational measure designed to address existing measurement gaps related to treatment integrity with tier 2 interventions in the early childhood field. To assess the preliminary score reliability (interrater) and validity (construct, discriminant) of the TIMECS, live observations (N=650) in early childhood classrooms from 54 teachers (92.6% female, 7.4% male; 61.1% White) and 91 children (M age=4.53 years, SD=0.44; 45.1% female, 54.9% male; 45.1% Black) at risk for EBDs were scored by 12 coders using the TIMECS and an observational measure designed to assess teacher-child interactions. Teachers also self-reported on the quality of the teacher-child relationship. Interrater reliability (intraclass correlation coefficients, ICC [2,2]) for the quantity (i.e., adherence) item scores had a mean of 0.81 (SD =0.07; range from 0.68 to 0.95), and the quality (i.e., competence) item scores had a mean of 0.69 (SD=0.08; range from 0.52 to 0.80). Scores on the TIMECS Quantity and Quality items and scales showed evidence of construct validity, with the magnitude of the correlations suggesting that the quantity and quality items assess distinct components of treatment integrity. A TIMECS quantity scale also showed promise for intervention evaluation research by discriminating between teachers who had and had not been trained in a specific evidence-based intervention targeting social and behavioral skills in early childhood. The findings support the potential of the TIMECS to assess treatment integrity of teacher-delivered practices designed to address child social and behavioral outcomes of children at risk for EBDs in early childhood settings. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is an excellent diffuse reflector widely used in light collection systems for particle physics experiments. In noble element systems, it is often coated with tetraphenyl butadiene (TPB) to allow detection of vacuum ultraviolet scintillation light. In this work this dependence is investigated for PTFE coated with TPB in air for light of wavelengths of 200~nm, 260~nm, and 450~nm. The results show that TPB-coated PTFE has a reflectance of approximately 92\% for thicknesses ranging from 5~mm to 10~mm at 450~nm, with negligible variation as a function of thickness within this range. A cross-check of these results using an argon chamber supports the conclusion that the change in thickness from 5~mm to 10~mm does not affect significantly the light response at 128~nm. Our results indicate that pieces of TPB-coated PTFE thinner than the typical 10~mm can be used in particle physics detectors without compromising the light signal.

The miniJPAS is a 1 deg$^2$ survey that uses the Javalambre-Physics of the Accelerating Universe Astrophysical Survey (J-PAS) filter system (54 narrow-band filters) with the Pathfinder camera. We study mJPC2470-1771, the most massive cluster detected in miniJPAS. We study the stellar population properties of the members, their star formation rates (SFR), star formation histories (SFH), the emission line galaxy (ELG) population, their spatial distribution, and the effect of the environment on them, showing the power of J-PAS to study the role of environment in galaxy evolution. We use a spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting code to derive the stellar population properties of the galaxy members: stellar mass, extinction, metallicity, colours, ages, SFH (a delayed-$\tau$ model), and SFRs. Artificial Neural Networks are used for the identification of the ELG population through the detection of H$\alpha$, [NII], H$\beta$, and [OIII] nebular emission. We use the WHAN and BPT diagrams to separate them into star-forming galaxies and AGNs. We find that the fraction of red galaxies increases with the cluster-centric radius. We select 49 ELG, 65.3\% of the them are probably star forming galaxies, and they are dominated by blue galaxies. 24% are likely to host an AGN (Seyfert or LINER galaxies). The rest are difficult to classify and are most likely composite galaxies. Our results are compatible with an scenario where galaxy members were formed roughly at the same epoch, but blue galaxies have had more recent star formation episodes, and they are quenching from inside-out of the cluster centre. The spatial distribution of red galaxies and their properties suggest that they were quenched prior to the cluster accretion or an earlier cluster accretion epoch. The miniJPAS survey has observed $\sim 1$ deg$^2$ on the AEGIS field with 60 bands (spectral resolution of $R \sim 60$) in order to demonstrate the capabilities of the Javalambre-Physics of the Accelerating Universe Astrophysical Survey (J-PAS) that will map $\sim 8000$ deg$^2$ of the northern sky in the next years. This paper shows the power of J-PAS to detect low mass groups and characterise their galaxy populations up to $z \sim 1$. We use the spectral energy distribution fitting code BaySeAGal to derive the stellar population properties of the galaxy members in 80 groups at $z \leq 0.8$ previously detected by the AMICO code, as well as for a galaxy field sample retrieved from the whole miniJPAS sample. We identify blue, red, quiescent, and transition galaxy populations through their rest-frame (extinction corrected) colour, stellar mass ($M_\star$) and specific star formation rate. We measure their abundance as a function of $M_\star$ and environment. We find: (i) The fraction of red and quiescent galaxies in groups increases with $M_\star$ and it is always higher in groups than in the field. (ii) The quenched fraction excess (QFE) in groups strongly increases with $M_\star$, (from a few percent to higher than 60% in the mass range $10^{10} - 3 \times 10 ^{11}$ $M_\odot$. (iii) The abundance excess of transition galaxies in groups shows a modest dependence with $M_\star$ (iv) The fading time scale is very short ($<1.5$ Gyr), indicating that the star formation declines very rapidly in groups. (v) The evolution of the galaxy quenching rate in groups shows a modest but significant evolution since $z\sim0.8$, compatible with an evolution with constant $QFE=0.4$, previously measured for satellites in the nearby Universe, and consistent with a scenario where the low-mass star-forming galaxies in clusters at $z= 1-1.4$ are environmentally quenched., Comment: 21 pages, 20 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

The Javalambre-Physics of the Accelerating Universe Astrophysical Survey (J-PAS) is expected to map thousands of square degrees of the northern sky with 56 narrowband filters in the upcoming years. This will make J-PAS a very competitive and unbiased emission line survey compared to spectroscopic or narrowband surveys with fewer filters. The miniJPAS survey covered 1 deg$^2$, and it used the same photometric system as J-PAS, but the observations were carried out with the pathfinder J-PAS camera. In this work, we identify and characterize the sample of emission line galaxies (ELGs) from miniJPAS with a redshift lower than $0.35$. Using a method based on artificial neural networks, we detect the ELG population and measure the equivalent width and flux of the $H\alpha$, $H\beta$, [OIII], and [NII] emission lines. We explore the ionization mechanism using the diagrams [OIII]/H$\beta$ versus [NII]/H$\alpha$ (BPT) and EW(H$\alpha$) versus [NII]/H$\alpha$ (WHAN). We identify 1787 ELGs ($83$%) from the parent sample (2154 galaxies) in the AEGIS field. For the galaxies with reliable EW values that can be placed in the WHAN diagram (2000 galaxies in total), we obtained that $72.8 \pm 0.4$%, $17.7 \pm 0.4$% , and $9.4 \pm 0.2$% are star-forming (SF), active galactic nucleus (Seyfert), and quiescent galaxies, respectively. Based on the flux of $H\alpha$ we find that the star formation main sequence is described as $\log$ SFR $[M_\mathrm{\odot} \mathrm{yr}^{-1}] = 0.90^{+ 0.02}_{-0.02} \log M_{\star} [M_\mathrm{\odot}] -8.85^{+ 0.19}_{-0.20}$ and has an intrinsic scatter of $0.20^{+ 0.01}_{-0.01}$. The cosmic evolution of the SFR density ($\rho_{\text{SFR}}$) is derived at three redshift bins: $0 < z \leq 0.15$, $0.15 < z \leq 0.25$, and $0.25 < z \leq 0.35$, which agrees with previous results that were based on measurements of the $H\alpha$ emission line., Comment: 22 pages, 19 figures

Evidence for the presence of short-lived radioactive isotopes when the Solar System formed is preserved in meteorites, providing insights into the conditions at the birth of our Sun. A low-mass core-collapse supernova had been postulated as a candidate for the origin of $^{10}$Be, reinforcing the idea that a supernova triggered the formation of the Solar System. We present a detailed study of the production of $^{10}$Be by the $\nu$ process in supernovae, which is very sensitive to the reaction rate of the major destruction channel, $^{10}$Be(p,$\alpha$)$^{7}$Li. With data from recent nuclear experiments that show the presence of a resonant state in $^{11}$B at $\approx$~193 keV, we derive new values for the $^{10}$Be(p,$\alpha$)$^{7}$Li reaction rate which are significantly higher than previous estimates. We show that, with the new $^{10}$Be(p,$\alpha$)$^{7}$Li reaction rate, a low mass CCSN is unlikely to produce enough $^{10}$Be to explain the observed $^{10}$Be/ $^{9}$Be ratio in meteorites, even for a wide range of neutrino spectra considered in our models. These findings point towards spallation reactions induced by solar energetic particles in the early Solar System as the origin of $^{10}$Be., Comment: 12 pages, 9 Figures, 4 Tables.
