The Next-generation Extended Wavelength-MUltiband Sub/millimeter Inductance Camera (NEW-MUSIC) on the Leighton Chajnantor Telescope (LCT) will be a first-of-its-kind, six-band, transmillimeter-wave ("trans-mm") polarimeter covering 2.4 octaves of spectral bandwidth to open a new window on the trans-mm time-domain frontier, in particular new frontiers in energy, density, time, and magnetic field. NEW-MUSIC's broad spectral coverage will also enable the use of the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effects to study accretion, feedback, and dust content in the hot gaseous haloes of galaxies and galaxy clusters. Six-band spectral energy distributions, with polarization information, will yield new insights into stellar and planetary nurseries. NEW-MUSIC will employ hierarchical, phased arrays of polarization-sensitive superconducting slot-dipole antennas, coupled to photolithographic bandpass filters, to nearly optimally populate LCT's 14' field-of-view with six spectral bands over 80-420 GHz (1:5.25 spectral dynamic range; 2.4 octaves). Light will be routed to Al or AlMn microstripline-coupled, parallel-plate capacitor, lumped-element kinetic inductance detectors (MS-PPC-LEKIDs), an entirely new KID architecture that substantially enhances design flexibility while providing background-limited performance. Innovative, wide-bandwidth, etched silicon structures will be used to antireflection-treat the back-illuminated focal plane. NEW-MUSIC will cost-effectively reuse much of the MUSIC instrument, initially deploying a quarter-scale focal plane capable of the bulk of NEW-MUSIC science followed later by a full-FoV focal plane needed for NEW-MUSIC wide-area survey science., Comment: 42 pages, 16 figures. We report on simulations of a novel design of optical titanium nitride (TiN)- based Kinetic Inductance Detectors (KIDs) in order to improve their response to optical photons. We propose to separate the meander from the substrate to trap hot phonons generated by optical photons, preventing their rapid propagation through the substrate. These phonons would in turn contribute to the breaking of more Cooper pairs, thereby increasing the response of the detector. In our design, the meander is suspended a few hundred nanometers above the substrate. Furthermore, reflective gold (Au) or aluminum (Al)-based layers can be placed under the meander to improve photon coupling in the optical wavelengths.

We present the optical characterization of two-scale hierarchical phased-array antenna kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs) for millimeter/submillimeter wavelengths. Our KIDs have a lumped-element architecture with parallel plate capacitors and aluminum inductors. The incoming light is received with a hierarchical phased array of slot-dipole antennas, split into 4 frequency bands (between 125 GHz and 365 GHz) with on-chip lumped-element band-pass filters, and routed to different KIDs using microstriplines. Individual pixels detect light for the 3 higher frequency bands (190-365 GHz) and the signals from four individual pixels are coherently summed to create a larger pixel detecting light for the lowest-frequency band (125-175 GHz). The spectral response of the band-pass filters was measured using Fourier transform spectroscopy (FTS), the far-field beam pattern of the phased-array antennas was obtained using an infrared source mounted on a 2-axis translating stage, and the optical efficiency of the KIDs was characterized by observing loads at 294 K and 77 K. SpectroPhotometric Imaging in Astronomy with Kinetic Inductance Detectors (SPIAKID) aims at designing, building, and deploying on the sky a spectrophotometric imager based on microwave kinetic inductance detectors (MKIDs) in the optical and near-infrared bands. MKIDs show a fast response and the ability to resolve photon energy compared to the conventional Charge-coupled Devices (CCDs). In this paper, we present the design and simulation of the MKID arrays for SPIAKID. The detectors consist of four arrays with each array of 20,000 lumped-element pixels, and each array will be read with 10 readout lines. %The array is designed to have resonances between 4-8GHz with a frequency spacing of 2 MHz and a coupling quality factor (Qc) of about 50000. The meander material of the resonators is trilayer TiN/Ti/TiN to have better uniformity of the critical temperature across the array. We also present the measurement result for a test array with $30\times30$ pixels which is a subset of the designed 2000-pixel array to verify the design and fabrication. The current measured best energy resolving power $R = E/\Delta E$ is 2.4 at $\lambda = 405~$nm and the current medium R is around 1.7. To improve the optical coupling in Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors (MKIDs), we investigate the use of a reflective plate beneath the meandered absorber. We designed, fabricated and characterized high-Q factors TiN-based MKIDs on sapphire operating at optical wavelengths with a Au/Nb reflective thin bilayer below the meander. The reflector is set at a quarter-wave distance from the meander using a transparent Al$_2$O$_3$ dielectric layer to reach the peak photon absorption. Following optical pulses ($\lambda=405~\text{nm}$) on titanium nitride (TiN) Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors (MKIDs) cooled down at temperatures $T \le T_c / 20$ ($T_c \simeq 4.6~\text{K}$), we observe a large phase-response highlighting two different modes simultaneously that are nevertheless related. The first corresponds to the well-known transition of cooper-pair breaking into quasi-particles which produces a known phase response. This is immediately followed by a large inverse response lasting several hundreds of microseconds to several milliseconds depending on the temperature. We propose to model this inverse pulse as the thermal perturbation of the superconductor and interaction with two level system (TLS) that reduces the dielectric constant which in turns modify the capacitance and therefore the resonance frequency. se of machine learning for automatic analysis of job interview videos has recently seen increased interest. Despite claims of fair output regarding sensitive information such as gender or ethnicity of the candidates, the current approaches rarely provide proof of unbiased decision-making, or that sensitive information is not used. Recently, adversarial methods have been proved to effectively remove sensitive information from the latent representation of neural networks. However, these methods rely on the use of explicitly labeled protected variables (e.g. gender), which cannot be collected in the context of recruiting in some countries (e.g. France). In this article, we propose a new adversarial approach to remove sensitive information from the latent representation of neural networks without the need to collect any sensitive variable. Using only a few frames of the interview, we train our model to not be able to find the face of the candidate related to the job interview in the inner layers of the model. This, in turn, allows us to remove relevant private information from these layers. Comparing our approach to a standard baseline on a public dataset with gender and ethnicity annotations, we show that it effectively removes sensitive information from the main network. Moreover, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first application of adversarial techniques for obtaining a multimodal fair representation in the context of video job interviews. For the Phase-II Upgrade of the ATLAS Detector, its Inner Detector, consisting of silicon pixel, silicon strip and transition radiation sub-detectors, will be replaced with an all new 100 % silicon tracker, composed of a pixel tracker at inner radii and a strip tracker at outer radii. The future ATLAS strip tracker will include 11,000 silicon sensor modules in the central region (barrel) and 7,000 modules in the forward region (end-caps), which are foreseen to be constructed over a period of 3.5 years. The construction of each module consists of a series of assembly and quality control steps, which were engineered to be identical for all production sites. In order to develop the tooling and procedures for assembly and testing of these modules, two series of major prototyping programs were conducted: an early program using readout chips designed using a 250 nm fabrication process (ABCN-25) and a subsequent program using a follow-up chip set made using 130 nm processing (ABC130 and HCC130 chips). This second generation of readout chips was used for an extensive prototyping program that produced around 100 barrel-type modules and contributed significantly to the development of the final module layout. A nonlinear analytical model for the pressure dynamics in a vacuum chamber, pumped with a sputter ion pump (SIP), is proposed, discussed and experimentally evaluated. The model describes the physics of the pumping mechanism of SIPs in the context of a cold-atom experiment. By using this model, we fit pump-down curves of our vacuum system to extract the relevant physical parameters characterizing its pressure dynamics. The aim of this investigation is the optimization of cold-atom experiments in terms of reducing the dead time for quantum sensing using atom interferometry. We develop a calibration method to improve the precision in pressure measurements via the ion current in SIPs. Our method is based on a careful analysis of the gas conductance and pumping in order to reliably link the pressure readings at the SIP with the actual pressure in the vacuum (science) chamber. Our results are in agreement with the existence of essentially two pumping regimes determined by the pressure level in the system. In particular, we find our results in agreement with the well-known fact that for a given applied voltage, at low pressures, the discharge current efficiently sputters pumping material from the pump's electrodes. This process sets the leading pumping mechanism in this limit. At high pressures, the discharge current drops and the pumping is mainly performed by the already sputtered material.

The impact of non verbal behaviour in a hiring decision remains an open question. Investigating this question is important, as it could provide a better understanding on how to train candidates for job interviews and make recruiters be aware of influential non verbal behaviour. This research has recently been accelerated due to the development of tools for the automatic analysis of social signals, and the emergence of machine learning methods. However, these studies are still mainly based on hand engineered features, which imposes a limit to the discovery of influential social signals. On the other side, deep learning methods are a promising tool to discover complex patterns without the necessity of feature engineering. In this paper, we focus on studying influential non verbal social signals in asynchronous job video interviews that are discovered by deep learning methods. We use a previously published deep learning system that aims at inferring the hirability of a candidate with regard to a sequence of interview questions. One particularity of this system is the use of attention mechanisms, which aim at identifying the relevant parts of an answer. Thus, information at a fine-grained temporal level could be extracted using global (at the interview level) annotations on hirability. While most of the deep learning systems use attention mechanisms to offer a quick visualization of slices when a rise of attention occurs, we perform an in-depth analysis to understand what happens during these moments. First, we propose a methodology to automatically extract slices where there is a rise of attention (attention slices). Second, we study the content of attention slices by comparing them with randomly sampled slices. New technologies drastically change recruitment techniques. Some research projects aim at designing interactive systems that help candidates practice job interviews. Other studies aim at the automatic detection of social signals (e.g. smile, turn of speech, etc...) in videos of job interviews. These studies are limited with respect to the number of interviews they process, but also by the fact that they only analyze simulated job interviews (e.g. students pretending to apply for a fake position). Asynchronous video interviewing tools have become mature products on the human resources market, and thus, a popular step in the recruitment process. As part of a project to help recruiters, we collected a corpus of more than 7000 candidates having asynchronous video job interviews for real positions and recording videos of themselves answering a set of questions. We propose a new hierarchical attention model called HireNet that aims at predicting the hirability of the candidates as evaluated by recruiters. In HireNet, an interview is considered as a sequence of questions and answers containing salient socials signals. Two contextual sources of information are modeled in HireNet: the words contained in the question and in the job position. Our model achieves better F1-scores than previous approaches for each modality (verbal content, audio and video). Results from early and late multimodal fusion suggest that more sophisticated fusion schemes are needed to improve on the monomodal results. Finally, some examples of moments captured by the attention mechanisms suggest our model could potentially be used to help finding key moments in an asynchronous job interview., Comment: AAAI 2019

Ediacaran fossils are now largely known in different parts of the world. However, some countries are poorly documented on these remains of a still enigmatic life. Thus, rare fossils from the Neoproterozoic Histria Formation of central Dobrogea (Romania) have been reported. Two specimens with discoid imprints are described here in detail and assigned to the typical Ediacaran species Beltanelliformis brunsae Menner in Keller et al., 1974. This paleontological development confirms both the large geographical distribution of this species and the Ediacaran age of the Histria Formation.
