- Abstract
In December 2022, a new version of the Brazilian indicator for the evaluation of scientific journals Qualis Periodicos was published, corresponding to the period 2017-2020. This new version of the indicator is the only official version since the previous one was published in 2016, in spite of the leaks in recent years of some estimates and discussions on the new values of the journals according to new criteria, in which citations and values from other bibliometric indicators such as CiteScore, Scopus, and Clarivate-JIF percentiles and Google’s h, h5, or h10 indexes have gained more relevance. Qualis Periodicos, practically ubiquitous in Brazil, corresponds to the main factor and motivation that Brazilian researchers have in deciding where to publish their best papers, so its situation and values are of special interest for journals that want to attract quality research from a country as large as Brazil, where recent political changes are expected to prompt greater investment in its scientific system and more resources for publications. This paper presents the values of the Spanish journals in Communication and Information, based on the Fecyt 2021 list and the Documentation and Communication categories of Dialnet Métricas, and identifies some anomalies in the system that should be considered by editors and authors when publishing their results. The 2030 Agenda of the United Nations (UN) presents 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) that can be used as a theoretical framework in scientific research. In this sense, our research question is as follows: is there a corpus of published literature in Portuguese or Spanish in the area of Library and Information Science and with an explicit mention to human rights that can be used as a theoretical reference and basis for future research on at least one of the 17 SDGs proposed by the UN in the 2030 Agenda? To answer this question, we conducted a search in the specialized database Library and Information Science Abstracts (LISA) and then analyzed and categorized the retrieved documents using a methodology based on Bardin. The results show that after the publication of the SDGs there was a significant increase in scientific publications on sustainable development in line with human rights. SDG number 16, “Promote just, peaceful and inclusive societies” is the one with the highest number works on human rights. We conclude that there is a corpus of research on sustainable development in Library and Information Science that recognizes its importance and can be used as a background for future research dealing with any of the SDGs. - Abstract
We are living in a reality in which the practices of access and use of digital information are saturated with disinformation, fake news, and hate speech that are met with no serious repercussions at either the political or the social level. Critical information literacy, as a movement of information activism with theoretical and practical components, is shown to be an opportunity to contribute to the construction of an informed and ethical society. We present an overview of critical information literacy from its origins, focusing on the educational field and professional practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this paper is to analyze the characteristics of the corresponding author (CA) in the area of Information Metric Studies. More specifically, we analyze the role of the CA in the articles published in co-authorship in the Journal of informetrics (JOI) in 2016, from two different perspectives: i) the bibliometric characteristics of the CAs; ii) the understanding of the role of the CA by the authors listed in the papers. We carried out the analysis in two stages: 1) identification of the percentage of participation in the main phases of the development of the article and the h index of the CAs by type of authorship, categorizing the contributions of the authors using the information from the JOI submission forms; 2) qualitative evaluation of the role of the CA according to the understanding of the articles' authors, using as a basis the responses of a questionnaire sent to the authors (Hilário, 2020).The results of the analysis include the bibliometric indicators related to the CA by type of authorship (double, triple, quadruple or more): position of the CA in the line of authorship; total percentage of contribution by the CA in the main phases of the development of research; h index; as well as the understanding of the 30 authors who answered the questionnaire regarding the role of the correspondence author in the development of research. - Abstract
The Brazilian system for the evaluation of journals Qualis Periódicos and the main changes announced for the new version are presented. The characteristics of the new criteria based on four principles are discussed: unified classification, classification by main areas, Qualis referencia, and bibliometric indicators. The main criticisms and problems of this new version with special emphasis on the characteristics of the area of Communication and Information and its community of researchers, are reviewed. This article analyzes the new provisional values of the Spanish journals of the area and concludes that, similarly to the Brazilian journals, they overall present lower values in the system. Finally, it is discussed the consequences of this overall drop of values for the relations between the Spanish and Brazilian scientific systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

TRAINING of librarians , *ACADEMIC librarians , *INFORMATION science , *ACADEMIC libraries , *LIBRARY science , *PROFESSIONAL competence - Abstract
It discusses copyright as a necessary competence for the academic reference librarian in order to provide guidance on issues related to the ethical and legal use of information. It reviews the topics of "academic library", "reference service" and "copyright" in relation to the current competencies of reference librarians in academic libraries. Using the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), we identified a sample of copyright offices that represent this new perspective for the reference librarian and analyzed their websites in order to identify current and emerging issues that can be important for the implementation of these services in Brazil and elsewhere. These issues are also considered key competencies related to the service that academic library and reference librarian provide to the community in relation to copyright. We conclude that, based on the analysis of the services and competences that are present in the international libraries, the curricula of the Library and Information Science programs, at least in Brazil, need to be revised in order to address these competences related to copyright and correspondently adjust the education and training of the reference librarians. The present paper aims to provide new details and information on the intellectual context in which social epistemology was born, including aspects such as its theoretical influences, intellectual contexts, and main characteristics. As methodology it presents an analysis of the writings on social epistemology by Jesse Shera and Margaret Egan selected from different and sometimes rare sources and collection. After an the analysis, the paper addresses the relationship between the historical social epistemology proposed by Margaret Egan and Jesse Shera as a discipline to investigate the foundations of librarianship and the contemporary social epistemology proposed by Steve Fuller as a program of a "naturalistic approach to the normative questions surrounding the organization of knowledge processes and products." Both these proposals are outlined as an interdisciplinary project that is based on both philosophical epistemology and the scientific sociology of knowledge. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective. To collect the richly textured viewpoints of academic librarians and students on obstacles to library integration in institutional information systems, namely student success technologies and learning analytics. The aim is to contribute with an initial set of recurring themes to baseline knowledge on Spanish and Greek public university libraries' prospects of engaging in this new type of intervention. Methodology. Interviews were conducted between June and November 2016 in two universities in Spain and Greece and were continuously cross-checked against current literature on the academic climate in an interdisciplinary approach. This process helped to effectively outline a conceptual framework for understanding organisational forces and operational issues that could affect the process of connecting library use data to wider student support systems. Results. Interviewees' feedback revealed that the practical diyculties involved in systematically tracking inlibrary student activity worksows and connecting them with campus-wide or even interinstitutional learning analytics initiatives are only some of the operationalisation challenges. Infrastructural capacity-related considerations, the professional development of librarians, user control and strong teacher bias concerns are all high on the stakeholder list of inhibitors that, if they are not tackled, could eventually jeopardize a cocreation and service innovation opportunity of unique value. Easiness of use, voluntariness and feedback were reported among the main criteria with which library data integration in learning analytics systems must comply. A change in data collection practices, the active pursuit of stakeholder engagement and the reconsideration of existing resources, namely infrastructures and funding, were also given as major strategic priorities for the successful implementation of this type of intervention. As governments around the world are beginning to recognize the role of creativity in the promotion of innovation and competitive advantage in a Global Knowledge Economy (GKE), Creative Knowledge-based Industries are becoming the focus of attention. Nevertheless, and in spite of the rise of Big Data, the prevailing absence of systematic library collection of activity data perpetuates the persistence of traditionalist and myopic approaches that tend to overlook the nexus between libraries and creativity while perceiving libraries as exclusively or basically collection gatekeepers, information brokers, and content providers. Given the universally acknowledged fact that the central value of the library is clearly creative, we embarked on the exploration of the academic library position within the Creative Industries system, as seen through the Ibero-American library community lens. In this vein, and following a literature review that focused on the interpretation of the intensity of libraries' creative value and content across different Creative Industries classification models, our survey within the library expert community attempts to investigate the relationship between academic libraries and the creative industries (CI) realm. Our overarching goal is to facilitate the articulation of targeted recommendations and to contribute to the conceptual foundations guiding the formation of a special interest group that will streamline the academic librarianship community response to this challenging area. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to discuss the literature on concept theory in library and information science (LIS) from an epistemological perspective, ascribing each paper to an epistemological family and discussing their relevance in the context of the knowledge organization (KO) domain. Design/methodology/approach: This paper adopts a hermeneutic approach for the analysis of the texts that compose the corpus of study following contingency and categorical analyses. More specifically, the paper works with Bardin's contingency analysis and follows Hjørland's families of epistemologies for the categorization. Findings: The analysis corroborates the observations made for the last ten years about the scarcity of studies on concept theory in LIS and KO. However, the study also reveals an epistemological turn on concept theory since 2009 that could be considered a departure from the rationalist views that dominated the field and a continuation of a broader paradigm shift in LIS and KO. All analyzed papers except two follow pragmatist or historicist approaches. Originality/value: This paper follows-up and systematizes the contributions to the LIS and KO fields on concept theory mainly during the last decade. The epistemological analysis reveals the dominant views in this paradigm shift and the main authors and trends that are present in the LIS literature on concept theory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study seeks to investigate the stakeholders' perceptions of organizational forces and operational issues that weigh upon the academic library's data capabilities, with a special focus on the Greek academic librarians' appreciation of the prospects of library use data integration in campus information systems. Findings from online interviews with international learning analytics experts and Greek academic library directors, that aimed to record their viewpoints around difficulties of integrating library data into learning analytics systems, brought to light several interpretative, organizational culture, librarian professional development, and user buy-in concerns. Interviewees made several recommendations related to collective action, training, and communications also stressing the importance of institutional support and active involvement of professional associations. The analysis of the participants' perspective provides a solid conceptual foundation for interpreting local issues associated with library use data capitalization within and beyond intra-institutional initiatives in the overarching goal to contribute actionable data to the development of context-specific tailor-made solutions. The terminology on plagiarism is not hard and fast. It is fluid, a bit ambiguous, and still emerging. It may take some time to settle the terms more clearly, concretely and exhaustively. This paper aims to provide a terminological discussion of some important and current concepts related to plagiarism. It discusses key terms/concepts such as copyright, citation cartels, citing vs. quoting, compulsive thief, cryptomnesia, data fakery, ignorance of laws and codes of ethics, information literacy, lack of training, misattribution, fair use clause, paraphrasing, plagiarism, plagiarism detection software, publish or perish syndrome, PubPeer, retraction, retraction vs. correction, retraction watch, salami publication, similarity score, Society for Scientific Values, and source attribution. The explanation and definition of these terms/concepts can be useful for LIS scholars and professionals in their efforts to fight plagiarism. We expect this terminology can be referred in future discussions on the topic and also used to improve the communications between the actors involved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Questions surrounding copyright and its impact on the possibilities of using scientific articles, theses, and other types of intellectual works have been growing in volume and complexity. Several studies show that neither university professors nor students possess adequate knowledge or are prepared to face such issues. This void has a negative impact on academic activities. In view of the situation, some university libraries have dedicated special effort to provide their users with more specific information related to these topics, giving rise to the new professional profile of copyright librarian, or even developing a new library section denominated copyright office. This new role has gradually expanded to deal with more global problems of scholarly communication. The present study analyzes the services offered by these offices and the professional and academic profile of the staff involved. Results point to a healthy degree of maturity and consolidation, together with a gradual broadening of the subject areas they cover. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper briefly presents the linguistic theoretical principles in Portuguese-speaking countries that do not enhance the representation of most local languages in digital space, in national space, and particularly in the formal public space of teaching and learning. It proposes the understanding of theoretical linguistic thought in Brazil as preferentially working in monolingual situations erasing multilingual reality and mainly in written works erasing oral history and oracy, due to theoretical choices. It is this understanding of language as an object recognized in monolingual environment that promotes a lack of models to deal with multilingual environment, specially in digital world. It presents data on living languages today in the world and on those that are part of the world wide web. And from these data, it considers the notion of big data in relation to the linguistic reality of multilingual countries that have Portuguese as their official language, particularly considering the activities of study and production of knowledge. We reflect on our Portuguese-speaking official and written reality, where the big data is located, and the possibilities of working with local languages inspired on the idea of polyphony, in order to promote local languages representation in digital world. The aim of this article is to shed light on the particularities of language choice (Spanish, English, and hybridity) and identity performance among urban music (UM) affiliated individuals from Hispanic immigrant backgrounds interacting through Instagram. The participants reside in Da DMV, an emic term used to refer to the Washington DC (DC) metropolitan area. The study focuses on the ways in which these Hispanic artists use linguistic and stylistic resources within a heteroglossic framework to perform resistance identities while highlighting the differences and similarities between first and second-generation immigrant participants. The speakers' linguistic and textual displays in Instagram are geared by and express translocal affective and sociocultural alignments and affinities while resisting hegemonic ideologies of racial categorization and stigmatization of Latinxs in the US. Theoretically and methodologically the study draws on sociolinguistics, language ideologies, critical race theory, and discourse analysis. Special attention is given to aspects of translocality and Hip-Hop Nation Language (HHNL, Alim, 2009), agency, and the ways in which they themselves make sense of and account for their actions through linguistic awareness. Within a mixed-methodology framework, this study criticizes the use of Computer Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis Software (CAQDAS) and highlights the analytical usefulness of triangulation. Thus, it describes the functions of the 'author' discussed by Foucault that can assist to reveal the characteristics of the scientific practice and examples of how theories are materialized. As a result, it identifies the ways in which modern science is developed and how knowledge is construed by multiple authors, group authors, the merit that is attributed by citations, etc. This article highlights the complexity of authorship attribution and the need to rethink generalized bibliometric techniques to evaluate science considering other aspects that go beyond the mere listing of the authors. The scientific nature of Information Science and its interdisciplinary relationships with other fields are discussed. I review some of the theoretical positions that coexist, oftentimes in conflict with each other, including the Mathematical Theory of Communication, Social Epistemology, Floridi’s Philosophy of Information, and theoretical positions in areas such as information technologies, information retrieval, bibliometrics, and big data. I conclude that the theoretical project of Social Epistemology, in its original conception by Egan and Shera, in its current manifestations in the philosophy of Steve Fuller, and in the paradigm of domain analysis by Hjørland, is one of the most solid proposals for providing a social, theoretical foundation for Information Science. - Abstract
Several authors emphasise the need for a change in classification theory due to the influence of a dogmatic and monistic ontology supported by an outdated essentialism. These claims tend to focus on the fallibility of knowledge, the need for a pluralistic view, and the theoretical burden of observations. Regardless of the legitimacy of these concerns, there is the risk, when not moderate, to fall into the opposite relativistic extreme. Based on a narrative review of the literature, we aim to reflectively discuss the theoretical foundations that can serve as a basis for a realist position supporting pluralistic ontological classifications. The goal is to show that, against rather conventional solutions, objective scientific-based approaches to natural classifications are presented to be viable, allowing a proper distinction between ontological and taxonomic questions. Supported by critical scientific realism, we consider that such an approach is suitable for the development of ontological Knowledge Organisation Systems (KOSs). We believe that ontological perspectivism can provide the necessary adaptation to the different granularities of reality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

INFORMATION science , *VOCABULARY , *EPISTEMICS , *THEORY of knowledge , *LITERARY warrant (Indexing) - Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to update and review the concept of warrant in Library and Information Science (LIS) and to introduce the concept of epistemic warrant from philosophy. Epistemic warrant can be used to assess the content of a work; and therefore, it can be a complement to existing warrants, such as literary warrant, in the development of controlled vocabularies. In this proposal, the authors aim to activate a theoretical discussion on warrant in order to revise and improve the validity of the concept of warrant from the user and classifier context to the classificationist context.Design/methodology/approach The authors have conducted an extensive literary review and close reading of the concept of warrant in LIS and knowledge organization in order to detect the different stances and gaps in which the concept of epistemic warrant might apply. The authors adopted an epistemological approach, in the vein of some of the previous commenters on warrant, such as Hope Olson and Birger Hjørland, and built upon the theoretical framework of different authors working with the concept of warrant outside knowledge organization, such as Alvin Plantinga and Alvin Goldman.Findings There are some authors and critics in the literature that have voiced for a more epistemological approach to warrant (in opposition to a predominantly ontological approach). In this sense, epistemic warrant would be an epistemological warrant and also a step forward toward pragmatism in a prominently empiricist context such as the justification of the inclusion of terms in a controlled vocabulary. Epistemic warrant can be used to complement literary warrant in the development of controlled vocabularies as well as in the classification of works.Originality/value This paper presents an exhaustive update and revision of the concept of warrant, analyzing, systematizing, and reviewing the different warrants discussed in the LIS literary warrant in a critical way. The concept of epistemic warrant for categorizational activities is introduced to the LIS field for the first time. This paper, and the proposal of epistemic warrant, has the potential to contribute to the theoretical and practical discussions on the development of controlled vocabularies and assessment of the content of works. Information literacy emerged in the 1970s to address information needs in an active and critical way. However, the increasing availability of information and the evolution of technology led information literacy to focus more on instrumental aspects and less on its cognitive, axiological, and critical dimensions. As a response, a new wave emerged to explicitly focus on the most critical and emancipatory aspects: Critical Information Literacy (CIL). This concept has been developed in a dynamic and spontaneous way through the various practices and publications on the topic and as a reflection of the social advances in recent decades. In this paper, CIL is presented as a means of action for informational activism to promote changes in society aligned with the values of human rights and social justice. We present a review of the main authors that have worked with CIL, including the active scene in Brazil and its Freirean influence, aiming at systematizing the concept and its main characteristics in a global landscape dominated by misinformation and absence of informational and digital competences. The concept of informational activism is presented and discussed as one of the main lines of action for Library and Information Science in today's polarized society. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ewing's sarcoma is a malignant tumor that primarily affects children and adolescents. Nearly 95% of these sarcomas occur between the ages of 5 to 25 years. It is more common in males and extremely rare among blacks. It presents most often in the diaphyses of long bones, the ribs and flat bones, such as the scapula and pelvis. We present the case of a 37 year-old woman with a tumor in the left hand. The amputation of the first and second fingers was performed as first-line treatment. The biopsy revealed a Ewing's sarcoma. Subsequently, the patient underwent chemotherapy regimen. This case is of interest given the unusual location of the tumor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DISCOURSE analysis , *INFORMATION theory , *DATA analysis , *PHENOMENOLOGY , *SEMANTICS - Abstract
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to discuss and shed light on the following questions: What is an author? Is it a person who writes? Or, is it, in information, an iconic taxonomic designation (some might say a “classification”) for a group of writings that are recognized by the public in some particular way? What does it mean when a search engine, or catalog, asks a user to enter the name of an author? And how does that accord with the manner in which the data have been entered in association with the names of the entities identified with the concept of authorship? Design/methodology/approach – The authors use several cases as bases of phenomenological discourse analysis, combining as best the authors can components of eidetic bracketing (a Husserlian technique for isolating noetic reduction) with Foucauldian discourse analysis. The two approaches are not sympathetic or together cogent, so the authors present them instead as alternative explanations alongside empirical evidence. In this way the authors are able to isolate components of iconic “authorship” and then subsequently engage them in discourse. Findings – An “author” is an iconic name associated with a class of works. An “author” is a role in public discourse between a set of works and the culture that consumes them. An “author” is a role in cultural sublimation, or a power broker in deabstemiation. An “author” is last, if ever, a person responsible for the intellectual content of a published work. The library catalog’s attribution of “author” is at odds with the Foucauldian discursive comprehension of the role of an “author.” Originality/value – One of the main assets of this paper is the combination of Foucauldian discourse analysis with phenomenological analysis for the study of the “author.” The authors turned to Foucauldian discourse analysis to discover the loci of power in the interactions of the public with the named authorial entities. The authors also looked to phenomenological analysis to consider the lived experience of users who encounter the same named authorial entities. The study of the “author” in this combined way facilitated the revelation of new aspects of the role of authorship in search engines and library catalogs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study takes the old myth of objectivity in media discourse to one of the most important but unrecognized actors in the process of its construction: the mass media information scientist or documentalist. Accepting the subjective presence of the documentalist in his/her productions this article opts for the recognition explicit statement of this role recommending two actions. First we suggest that public higher education institutions combine the technical training of mass media documentalists with training in critical thinking skills. Our study analysed the subjects covered in course syllabi to detect the deficiencies to be addressed in meeting this objective. Second we propose alternative lines of training that can contribute to cross-training of mass media documentalists in those degree programs to ensure that they acquire the needed skills in critical analysis. CLASSIFICATION of books , *LIBRARY catalogs , *METADATA , *LIBRARY administration - Abstract
Acknowledging the importance of classification not only for library and information science but also for the study and mapping of the world phenomena, in this paper we revisit and systematize the main types of classifications and focus on the species of classification mainly drawing on the work of S. R. Ranganathan. We trace the evolution of library classification systems by their structures and modes of design of various shades of classification systems and make a comparative study of enumerative and faceted species of library classifications. The value of this paper is to have a picture of the whole spectrum of existing classifications, which may serve for the study of future developments and constructions of new systems. This paper updates previous works by Comaromi and Ranganathan and is also theoretically inspired by them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the recent years, several libraries in the United States have been experimenting with Book Industry Standards and Communications (BISAC), the classification system of the book industry, as an alternative to the Dewey Decimal Classification. Although rarely discussed, these cases of implementation of BISAC arguably resemble other past cases of replacement of traditional classifications that received the name of reader-interest classifications. In this article, a comparison of the BISAC cases to the previous cases of reader-interest classifications is taken in order to determine if the current application of BISAC to libraries is susceptible to the same problems, dangers, and ends as occurred in the past. The need to map the evolution of trends in any field of activity arises when a large amount of data is available on that activity, thus making impossible a manual exploration of the data in order to understand how the field or the activity is evolving. Topic and trend mapping is a mature field with hundreds of publications on approaches, methods and tools for data collection, analysis, feature extraction and reduction, clustering and visualisation tools and algorithms. Our study aims to map the evolution of topics published by the journal Education for Information. Interdisciplinary Journal on Information Studies (EFI henceforth) which has been in existence since 1983, in order to understand how this journal has evolved and how it is positioned with regard to the field of Library and Information Science to which it belongs. Our study is part of the body of work on topic detection and text mining. Our results showed that the journal displayed a remarkable stability in its editorial policy over more than three decades. With the arrival of its third Editor in Chief in 2018, a shift towards more technologically oriented topics and to specialties from other fields are perceptible such as health information, data science and digital humanities. LOCAL knowledge , *CLASSIFICATION , *LIBRARIES , *SOCIAL media , *HEGEMONY - Abstract
ABSTRACT This panel features junior and senior scholars from the United States, Denmark, and Brazil, who will come together to discuss some of the central tensions between local and global knowledge organization systems. They will be in conversation around three key questions: 1) What are the contexts in which local and global knowledge organization systems matter? 2) What can we learn about the stakes of global/local knowledge organization from those contexts? 3) How can we conceptualize the relationship between the universal and the particular? The panelists will provide brief overviews of their perspectives, and the majority of the time will be reserved for an interactive discussion of the epistemological, practical, and ethical dimensions of global and local knowledge organization. The contexts addressed will include libraries, archives, and digital, social, and popular media. Within those settings, the panelists are concerned with such issues as access, hegemony, intended and unintended consequences, and meaning construction in particular domains, spaces, and communities. What is the role of information in autonomous action in data-driven societies? This question is addressed in the present paper, which aims to discuss the role of information in the dynamics of habits that guide action. A naïve map of contemporary approaches to information is proposed, with indications of the challenges faced by each of them. From the proposed map, we claim that the Peircean semiotic approach to information, which brings ethical and aesthetic principles, sheds light on analyses of complex problems faced by contemporary data-driven societies. Examples of topics discussed are autonomous action and privacy in self-tracking activities, healthcare records, and genetic identification. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DISINFORMATION , *DYSTOPIAS , *SOCIAL media , *SEMIOTICS , *POLITICAL philosophy , *PRAGMATISM - Abstract
Based on recent political happenings, such as Brexit (UK) and the election of Donald Trump (USA), it has become clear that political marketing has been using 'Big Data' intensively. Information gathered from social media networks is organized into digital environments and has the power to determine the outcome of elections, plebiscites and popular consultations. New advertising and persuasion mechanisms have been created to undermine the reliability of traditional mass media communication that are familiar to the general audience. Consequently, 'fake news' and 'alternative facts' have emerged along with the notion of 'post-truth', which defines the state of affairs represented in public opinion that has been contaminated by these strategies. Based on the pragmatic-semiotic concepts developed by Peirce, such as belief, mental habits, controlled action, final opinion, truth, and reality, we argue that the 'global village', (McLuhan, 2008) may be at a dangerous fork in the road. This author's 'scientific method' was elaborated based on (1) the concatenation of hypotheses, (2) the deduction of its consequences, and (3) the design of experiences and aims to test our beliefs against our results which would be critically evaluated by communities of researchers. This fork in the road, which rapidly evolves as a dystopia built and reaffirmed by the spread of disinformation on social networks, points towards a 'post-reality' that can represent an illusory and brief comfort zone for those who live in it but may also represent a tragedy with no turning back for our entire civilization. - Abstract
Hybrid libraries allow a greater interaction between the professional practice and the users of an information unit. In this sense, they are information links between traditional and digital libraries. Due to their greater flexibility in offering services and products, they must be studied using a rich methodology that can be adapted to the form and statements stemmed from those environments. Its social perspective provides the organizational structure with policies for the development of communities, also contributing to a good functioning of the institution. In that perspective, the research question of this paper refers to the potential of hybrid libraries for society. The discourse analysis based on Orlandi, that revises the works of Foucault and Pêcheux in advertising, enables the analysis of the discourse of the Central Library at Liverpool in the United Kingdom. This institution, through the inclusion of another information unit such as the archive, reflects the ideal of a hybrid library to be applied in other information units. The analysis found that the adaptation of other information units such as archives to the hybrid library environment affects the ability of users to discover new information and investigate the information that the library is providing.
