28. Deposition of NiO/YSZ Composite and YSZ by Suspension Plasma Spray on Porous Metal

Abstract

The use of a liquid feedstock carrier in suspension plasma spray (SPS) permits injection of fine powders, providing the possibility of producing sprayed coatings that are both thin and dense and have fine microstructures. These characteristics make SPS an attractive process for depositing highly efficient electrodes and electrolytes for solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) applications. In the present study, NiO-yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) anode and YSZ electrolyte half cells were successfully deposited on porous Hastelloy X substrates by SPS. The NiO-YSZ anode deposition process was optimized by design of experiment. The YSZ electrolyte spray process was examined by changing one parameter at a time. The results from the design-of-experiment trials indicate that the porosity of the as-deposited coatings increased with an increase of suspension feed rate while it decreased with an increase of total plasma gas flow rate and standoff distance. The deposition efficiency increased with an increase of total plasma gas flow rate, suspension feed rate and standoff distance. The microstructure examination by SEM shows that the NiO and YSZ phases were homogeneously distributed and that the YSZ phase had a lamellar structure. Abstract

There is a widespread notion that obesity leads to gastro-oesophageal reflux but scientific evidence of an association is limited and inconsistent.To estimate the strength of the association between body mass and reflux symptoms, we performed a population based cross sectional interview study.Population based, randomly selected, middle aged or elderly persons in Sweden in 1995-1997.At face-to-face interviews we asked a stratified sample of Swedes about body measures and occurrence of reflux symptoms. Odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI), calculated by logistic regression with multivariate adjustments for covariates, were the measures of association.Reflux symptoms occurring at least once a week more than five years before the interview were reported by 135 (16%) of the 820 interviewees. Among those who had ever been overweight during adulthood (body mass index (BMI)or =25 kg/m(2)), the OR of having recurrent reflux symptoms was 0.99 (95% CI 0.66-1.47) compared with those who were never overweight. There was no association between BMI at age 20, BMI 20 years before the interview, or maximum adult BMI and occurrence of reflux symptoms: ORs per unit increase in BMI were 1. 00 (95% CI 0.93-1.09), 1.03 (95% CI 0.96-1.10), and 1.01 (95% CI=0.95-1.07), respectively. There was no association between BMI and severity or duration of reflux symptoms.Gastro-oesophageal reflux symptoms occur independently of body mass index. Weight reduction may not be justifiable as an antireflux therapy.

37. Preparation of nanostructured Zn-Cr-O spinel powders by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis

Abstract

Ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (1.7 MHz) has been applied for the generation of zinc chromium oxide submicronic (470 nm) particles from the corresponding metal nitrate solution. Heterogeneous gas-liquid/solid chemical reactions occurred in dispersed systems (aerosols) at 1173 K with the residence time ranging from 3 to 6 s. Such a synthesis method enables a high surface reaction and stoichiometric retention at the droplet scale that is of special importance when functional materials with sensing properties are considered. Consequently, homogeneous distributions of the constituting elements and zinc to chromium atomic ratio of about 0.7 are proved by EMAX analysis. The particle morphology, revealed mostly as a composite structure, comprised of primary crystallites smaller than 70 nm. The particle crystalline structure, phase content and decomposition behavior were analyzed in accordance with various methods of analysis (X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). differential thermal analysis (DTA), scanning electron microscopy with X-ray microanalyser (SEM-EMAX)) and discussed in terms of precursor chemistry and process parameters.

Abstract

Catalyst-coated membranes (CCMs) for use in high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) were successfully fabricated by a one-step jet-flame direct deposition process using reactive spray deposition technology (RSDT). The as-deposited catalyst layer (CL) was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and electrochemical measurements. Pt nanoparticles averaging 2.6 nm in diameter formed a good dispersion with a Pt content of 47.5 wt% on the carbon. The Pt/C catalyst had a specific activity and a mass activity of 277 µA/cmPt² and 0.155 A/mgPt, respectively. Polybenzimidazole (PBI) was employed as the membrane, and the membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) were tested in temperatures ranging from 140°C to 160°C. Power densities of 375 mW/cm² in oxygen and 135 mW/cm² in air were achieved with a total Pt loading of 0.8 mg/cm². [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
