This dissertation scrutinizes the development of human capital in the Iberian world. Although both, Latin America and Spain, have been the focus of new recent studies, empirical evidence is still scarce, especially for the Latin American and Caribbean region. Broad trends of long-term human capital development in the New World and in Spain therefore have remained unclear until now. The thesis therefore aims at filling in the void. It presents human capital estimates in the long run for the Iberian world. Human capital development can be traced back to the 17th century for a number of Latin American countries. For this purpose it uses two indicators of human capital, education and health. To measure education, the thesis employs the age heaping technique which calculates the share of people who were able to report their exact age rather than a rounded age, in population enumerations. This is an indicator of basic numeracy, which is a precondition for developing more advanced skills. Health is approximated by adult height, which gives information on the nutritional status and the disease environment during childhood. The thesis comprises six chapters of which four manuscripts, partly co-authored, are intended for publication. To put the methodology applied in the papers in a broader context, chapter 2 gives a detailed overview of the age heaping methodology applied to approximate numerical abilities in Latin America and Spain. It presents the underlying concepts and ideas more thoroughly than it is possible in the methodology section of the papers. Chapters 3 and 4 examine general tendencies in the development of human capital in the Iberian world. Chapter 5 and 6 focus on more specific questions concerning its development in particular countries, namely Spain and Peru. These studies allow an in depth-study of the economic and social circumstances influencing human capital. Diese Dissertation betrachtet die Humankapitalentwicklung in der Iberischen Welt. Sowohl Lateinamerika als auch Spanien stehen zwar im Zentrum neuerer Studien, empirische Untersuchungen, insbesondere für Lateinamerika und die Karibik, in diesem Themenbereich sind jedoch begrenzt. Die langfristige Humankapitalentwicklung in der Neuen Welt und Spanien blieb somit bislang unklar. Um diese Lücke zu schließen werden Ergebnisse zur langfristigen Humankapitalentwicklung dargestellt und analysiert. Hierbei kann die Humankapitalentwicklung für einige Länder bis ins 17. Jahrhundert zurück verfolgt werden. Zur Messung von Humankapital werden zwei unterschiedliche Indikatoren herangezogen: Bildung und Gesundheit. Um Bildung zu approximieren, wird die Zahlenfähigkeit („numeracy“) anhand von Altersrundungen („age heaping“) in Volkszählungen analysiert. Hierbei wird der Anteil der Bevölkerung, der in der Lage war das genaue statt eines ungefähren Alters anzugeben, berechnet. Damit ist dies ein Indikator für eine grundlegende, sehr einfache Zahlenfähigkeit, die aber Voraussetzung ist um weiter fortgeschrittene Fähigkeiten zu entwickeln. Gesundheit wird anhand der Körpergröße gemessen, die wiederum Informationen über den Ernährungsstatus und das Krankheitsumfeld während der Kindheit gibt. Die kumulative Dissertationsschrift beinhaltet 4 Forschungspapiere sowie ein Kapitel zur ausführlichen Erläuterung der angewendeten Methode. Kapitel 2 erörtert die zugrunde liegende Methode detailliert. Kapitel 3 und 4 untersuchen allgemeine Tendenzen in der Humankapitalentwicklung in Lateinamerika und der Karibik. Kapitel 5 und 6 konzentrieren sich dagegen auf spezifischere Fragen bezüglich der Entwicklung in einzelnen Ländern, nämlich Spanien und Peru. Diese Studien erlauben eine detailliertere Betrachtung der ökonomischen und sozialen Verhältnisse die Humankapital beeinflussen können.

This article outlines the development of gender disparities in education for 28 Latin American and Caribbean countries for the period from 1880 to 1949, using age heaping techniques. We explore in particular the hypothesis of a Ushaped development of women’s education during economic development, i.e., a decrease in gender equality at lower levels of overall education, and increasing gender equality at higher levels. For the downward sloping part, we find some evidence, although this part is relatively small. The upward sloping part is strongly confirmed. We also find that non-Hispanic Caribbean countries had substantially lower gender inequality rates than Latin American countries. A second major contribution is to document the development of average numerical abilities (of both genders) in these 28 countries. En este artículo se estudian las disparidades de género en numeracy para veintiocho países de América Latina y el Caribe en el período de 1880 a 1949. Con este propósito, el trabajo explora el alcance del denominado «age heaping», el cual suministra una valiosa información sobre la tendencia de las personas a redondear su edad lo cual, indirectamente, proporciona información sobre los cambios en el nivel educativo de un país en el largo plazo. En particular investigamos la hipótesis de un desarrollo en forma «U», es decir, el incremento de las disparidades de género para niveles de educación bajos y la reducción de estas disparidades para niveles de desarrollo más altos. En este sentido, la parte superior de la curva está plenamente confirmada, sin embargo, en la parte inferior con una trayectoria relativamente pequeña, encontramos sólo débiles evidencias. A partir de esta nueva línea de investigación, los resultados del estudio evidencian que por un lado, los países del Caribe no hispánicos tuvieron tasas de desigualdad educativa sustancialmente más bajas que los países latinoamericanos y, por el otro, que la totalidad de los veintiocho países de la muestra ofrecen un incremento en la media de las «habilidades numéricas » para ambos sexos en el período.
