Globally, the companies that make commercial use of bamboo culms produce different kinds of solid waste rich in lignocellulosic biomass, which in some cases is not used and is discarded in landfills or incinerated in the open air; losing the possibility of recovering them and using them in other productive sectors. The research objective were to produce a biochar from Guadua agustifolia  Kunth sawdust, evaluate its potential environmental and agricultural use, obtain a biochar/TiO 2  composite to inactivate Escherichia coli and use the biochar as a soil conditioner in medicinal plants producing phenolic compounds and flavonoids. Biochar composite (produced at 300 °C for 1 h) involved TiO 2 at 450 °C for 1 h for inactivation of E. coli (initial concentration: 6.5 ± 0.3 Log 10 CFU mL - 1 ). For agriculture, 2% biochar was used to evaluate B. pilosa L. and G. angustifolia  plant growth for 90 days. The biochar/TiO 2  composite had a high photocatalytic activity on E. coli, generating a final count of 1.97 ± 0.2 Log 10 CFU mL - 1 after 60 min. Biochar (2%) increased the total phenol and flavonoid content in the medicinal plant B. pilosa L. and total phenols in G. angustifolia, tested at the nursery stage. This study provides new information on the conversion and use of G. angustifolia sawdust as an alternative for new bio-based materials with environmental and agricultural applications. In addition, obtaining biochar and composite could positively impact the bamboo production chain in Colombia because of renewable and globally accepted alternatives that help capture gaseous emissions causing the greenhouse effect., Competing Interests: Declarations. Background: Multiple sclerosis affects more than 2 million people. Clinical decisions are performed under evidence-based medicine. The appearance of new disease-modifying therapies and changes in diagnostic criteria complicates the decision-making process in clinical practice., Objectives: To characterize the criteria for radiologically isolated syndrome (RIS), clinically isolated syndrome (CIS), and relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) by Mexican neurologists in a real-world setting., Methods: A two-round modified Delphi method (RAND/UCLA) was applied., Results: In RIS, LP, spinal cord MRI and VEP should be included in diagnostic testing; DMT initiation is not necessary. A follow-up MRI within 3 months are recommended. In CIS, corticosteroid therapy should be initiated at first relapse; both simple and Gd-enhanced MRI is mandatory. LP, selective blood tests, and NMO-IgG/AQP4 antibodies should be performed as complementary. IFN beta or GA were the most suitable DMTs for treating high-risk CIS. Patients with RRMS should begin with DMT at diagnosis, include a follow-up MRI if a patient had 2 relapses within 6 months. GA and oral DMTs are the most eligible DMTs for mild RRMS. Monoclonal antibodies-based therapy is chosen when disability is present. Radiological criteria for switching DMT included >1 Gd+ lesion and >2 new T2 lesions., Conclusions: Although many coincidences, there are still many hollows in the medical attention of MS in Mexico. Background: The co-transformation of solid waste of natural and anthropogenic origin can be carried out through solid-state-fermentation systems to obtain bio-products with higher added value and lower environmental impact., Methods: To evaluate the effect of Pleurotus ostreatus on co-transformation of oxo-degradable low-density polyethylene (LDPE oxo ) sheets and lignocellulosic biomass (LCB), were assembled two 0.75 L microcosm systems in vertical (VMS) and horizontal (HMS) position. The pre-treated sheets with luminescent O 2 plasma discharges were mixed with pine bark, hydrolyzed brewer's yeast and paper napkin fragments and incubated for 135 days at 20 ± 1.0 °C in the presence of the fungus. With the co-transformation residues, biochar (BC) was produced at 300 ± 1.0 °C (BC300) for 1 h, then used to carry out adsorption studies, using the malachite green dye (MG) at pH 4.0, 7.0 and 9.0 ± 0.2. Finally, the biochar was the substrate for the germination of carnation seeds (Dianthus caryophyllus) and Ray-grass (Lolium sp.) in vitro., Results: For HMS, the decrease in static contact angle (SCA) was 63.63% (p = 0.00824) and for VMS 74.45% (p = 0.00219), concerning the pristine. Plastic roughness in VMS was higher (26%) concerning the control. Throughout the 135 days, there were fungal growth and consequently laccase (Lac), manganese peroxidase (MnP) and lignin peroxidase (LiP) activities. During the first 75 days, CO 2 production increased to 4.78 ± 0.01 and 4.98 ± 0.01 mg g-1 for HMS and VMS, respectively. In MG adsorption studies, the highest amount of the colourant adsorbed at both pH 4.0 and 7.0 ± 0.2., Conclusions: Finally, the biochar or the biochar enriched with low concentrations of plant growth-promoting microorganisms and inorganic fertilizer favours the germination of Dianthus caryophyllus and Lolium sp., seeds.

Liquid waste from biological stains is considered non-domestic wastewater difficult to treat, generating high environmental impact. Therefore, the objective of this work was to carry out secondary and tertiary treatment of these effluents at a pilot scale, using a fungal/bacterial consortium followed by Chorella sp., for 15 days. In addition, to obtain an adsorbent material for Malachite Green dye removal, sludge generated in the plant and pine bark co-pyrolysis was performed. For microalgae isolation and selection of the Chlorophyceae class, Chlorococcales order, and Chorella sp. genus Winogradsky columns were employed. After 15 days of pilot plant treatment, removal percentages of 91 ± 2%, 90 ± 4% and 17 ± 2% were obtained for Colour Units, Chemical Oxygen Demand and Nitrates, respectively. Two types of class II biochar (BC 500 and BC 700 ) and one of class III (BC 300 ) were produced. The highest value for Fixed carbon (FC) was obtained at 300 °C (27.3 ± 3%), decreasing as the temperature increased by 25.9 ± 5% and 24.8 ± 2%, for BC 500 and BC 700 , respectively. Biochar yield was 62.1 ± 3%, 46.3 ± 4% and 31.6 ± 3% for BC 300 , BC 500 and BC 700 , respectively. Finally, BC 500 and BC 700 biochar efficiently adsorbed Malachite Green obtaining qe values of 0.290 ± 0.032, 0.281 ± 0.015, 0.186 ± 0.009 and 0.191 ± 0.012 mg g -1 at pH values of 4.0 and 8.0 ± 0.2, respectively. Conventional processes (coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, and filtration) are widely used in drinking water treatment plants and are considered a good treatment strategy to eliminate cyanobacterial cells and cell-bound cyanotoxins. The diversity of cyanobacteria was investigated using taxonomic cell counts and shotgun metagenomics over two seasons in a drinking water treatment plant before, during, and after the bloom. Changes in the community structure over time at the phylum, genus, and species levels were monitored in samples retrieved from raw water (RW), sludge in the holding tank (ST), and sludge supernatant (SST). Aphanothece clathrata brevis, Microcystis aeruginosa, Dolichospermum spiroides , and Chroococcus minimus were predominant species detected in RW by taxonomic cell counts. Shotgun metagenomics revealed that Proteobacteria was the predominant phylum in RW before and after the cyanobacterial bloom. Taxonomic cell counts and shotgun metagenomic showed that the Dolichospermum bloom occurred inside the plant. Cyanobacteria and Bacteroidetes were the major bacterial phyla during the bloom. Shotgun metagenomics also showed that Synechococcus , Microcystis , and Dolichospermum were the predominant detected cyanobacterial genera in the samples. Conventional treatment removed more than 92% of cyanobacterial cells but led to cell accumulation in the sludge up to 31 times more than in the RW influx. Coagulation/sedimentation selectively removed more than 96% of Microcystis and Dolichospermum . Cyanobacterial community in the sludge varied from raw water to sludge during sludge storage (1-13 days). This variation was due to the selective removal of coagulation/sedimentation as well as the accumulation of captured cells over the period of storage time. However, the prediction of the cyanobacterial community composition in the SST remained a challenge. Among nutrient parameters, orthophosphate availability was related to community profile in RW samples, whereas communities in ST were influenced by total nitrogen, Kjeldahl nitrogen (N- Kjeldahl), total and particulate phosphorous, and total organic carbon (TOC). No trend was observed on the impact of nutrients on SST communities. Background: The evolution of bacteria is shaped by different mechanisms such as mutation, gene deletion, duplication, or insertion of foreign DNA among others. These genetic changes can accumulate in the descendants as a result of natural selection. Using phylogeny and genome comparisons, evolutionary paths can be somehow retraced, with recent events being much easier to detect than older ones. For this reason, multiple tools are available to study the evolutionary events within genomes of single species, such as gene composition alterations, or subtler mutations such as SNPs. However, these tools are generally designed to compare similar genomes and require advanced skills in bioinformatics. We present CAPRIB, a unique tool developed in Java that allows to determine the amino acid changes, at the genus level, that correlate with phenotypic differences between two groups of organisms., Results: CAPRIB has a user-friendly graphical interface and uses databases in SQL, making it easy to compare several genomes without the need for programming or thorough knowledge in bioinformatics. This intuitive software narrows down a list of amino acid changes that are concomitant with a given phenotypic divergence at the genus scale. Each permutation found by our software is associated with two already described statistical values that indicate its potential impact on the protein's function, helping the user decide which promising candidates to further investigate. We show that CAPRIB is able to detect already known mutations and uncovers many more, and that this tool can be used to question molecular phylogeny. Finally, we exemplify the utility of CAPRIB by pinpointing amino acid changes that coincided with the emergence of slow-growing mycobacteria from their fast-growing counterparts. With its intuitive graphical interface, this tool identifies key amino acid changes concomitant with a phenotypic divergence. By comparing fast and slow-growing mycobacteria, we shed light on evolutionary hotspots, such as the cytokinin pathway, that are interesting candidates for further experimentations.

Fresh-water sources of drinking water are experiencing toxic cyanobacterial blooms more frequently. Chemical oxidation is a common approach to treat cyanobacteria and their toxins. This study systematically investigates the bacterial/cyanobacterial community following chemical oxidation (Cl 2 , KMnO 4 , O 3 , H 2 O 2 ) using high throughput sequencing. Raw water results from high throughput sequencing show that Proteobacteria , Actinobacteria , Cyanobacteria and Bacteroidetes were the most abundant phyla. Dolichospermum, Synechococcus, Microcystis and Nostoc were the most dominant genera. In terms of species, Dolichospermum sp.90 and Microcystis aeruginosa were the most abundant species at the beginning and end of the sampling, respectively. A comparison between the results of high throughput sequencing and taxonomic cell counts highlighted the robustness of high throughput sequencing to thoroughly reveal a wide diversity of bacterial and cyanobacterial communities. Principal component analysis of the oxidation samples results showed a progressive shift in the composition of bacterial/cyanobacterial communities following soft-chlorination with increasing common exposure units (CTs) (0-3.8 mg·min/L). Close cyanobacterial community composition ( Dolichospermum dominant genus) was observed following low chlorine and mid-KMnO 4 (287.7 mg·min/L) exposure. Our results showed that some toxin producing species may persist after oxidation whether they were dominant species or not. Relative persistence of Dolichospermum sp.90 was observed following soft-chlorination (0.2-0.6 mg/L) and permanganate (5 mg/L) oxidation with increasing oxidant exposure. Pre-oxidation using H 2 O 2 (10 mg/L and one day contact time) caused a clear decrease in the relative abundance of all the taxa and some species including the toxin producing taxa. These observations suggest selectivity of H 2 O 2 to provide an efficient barrier against toxin producing cyanobacteria entering a water treatment plant.

Industrial development has increased wastewater (WW) volume; generating contamination and disturbing ecosystems, because of breeching disposal parameters. In this work, Coloured Laboratory Wastewater (CLWW), (1500.00 colour units, CU) was separately submitted to two secondary treatments. For the first one CLWW was treated for three cycles C1, C2 and C3 with P. pastoris X33/pGAPZαA -LaccPost-Stop producing rPOXA 1B laccase, immobilized in calcium alginate beads. For the second-one, rPOXA 1B enzyme concentrate was used (three processes: P1, P2, and P3). Both treatments were carried out in a 15 L reactor with 10 L effective work volume (EWV) with 72 h hydraulic retention time. C1, C2, and C3 effluents were flocculated and filtered through quartzite sand, while P1, P2, and P3 effluents were only filtered through quartzite sand. The mixture of secondary effluents was submitted to a tertiary treatment with Chlorella sp. For C1, C2, C3, P1, P2, and P3, CU removal was of 99.16, 99.58, 99.53, 96.72, 97.05 and 96.47%, respectively. Discharge parameters, total organic carbon (TOC), inorganic carbon (IC), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biological oxygen demand (BOD 5 ) decreased, although they reached different final values. After the tertiary treatment (144 h) effluent discharge parameters were reduced to 34 ± 4 CU, TOC to 6.6 ± 0.9 mg L -1 and COD to 155 ± 4 mg L -1 . The aim of this letter was to point out some methodological concerns about an article written by Shi et al. and published in the journal. There is an increasing trend in the isolation of Methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia and a variety of questions regarding the best therapy to treat this condition. These concerns might lead to selection, publication and information bias that prevent the generalization and application of these results in our clinical practice.

Introduction: Recent studies report that patients with neuromyelitis optica (NMO) or seropositive NMO spectra disorders display clinical characteristics that are different from those of patients who are seropositive for the aquaporin-4 (AQP4) antibody., Aim: To analyse the clinical and paraclinical characteristics of patients with NMO according to their serum AQP4 status., Patients and Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of 100 patients with NMO who fulfilled the Wingerchuk criteria: 70 were positive for the AQP4 antibody and 30 were seronegative., Results: 70% of the subjects met the criteria for NMO, and 30% met criteria for NMO spectra disorders. The seropositive patients presented greater disability in the scores on the American Spinal Injury Association scale (ASIA) and the Expanded Disability Status Scale (p = 0.034 and 0.004, respectively) compared to seronegatives during the follow-up; in this same group there was greater visual involvement (p = 0.02), a higher number of relapses (p = 0.008) and a greater number of spinal segments involved (p = 0.003)., Conclusion: This study provides an overview of the clinical and paraclinical characteristics of patients with NMO according to the AQP4 antibody serostatus. Patients who are seropositive for the AQP4 antibody present greater clinical and imaging involvement.
