The human experience of survival from a plague is about distinguishing the sick from the healthy as quickly as possible, establishing a barrier to stop the infection, and protecting healthy people. Nevertheless, the various quarantine rules and the acceptance and compliance of the population are a kind of battle between policy implementers and the public. This paper tries to understand how Chinese cultural attitudes (Henderson, 1984) unconsciously influence the Chinese people to be most cooperative with the strict containment and quarantine measures to confront the COVID‐19 pandemic. This article begins with the Chinese characters, exemplified by the four characters of disease and plague, to discuss how the pictograph nature and spatial structural way profoundly shaped the cultural mind. Then, through plague‐related Chinese legends, stories and folklore, the paper sets out the Chinese cultural attitudes which are also manifested in the analogical associations between disease, plague and seasons, the balance of the five elements of the universe and ghosts, gods and the government bureaucrats in the Kingdom of the Heaven. All of these approaches are well in line with Jung's method of associative amplification as a way to locate the archetypal wisdom that assures survival. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nella vasta produzione letteraria di A. P. Čechov sono presenti testimonianze scritte durante il periodo della quinta ondata della pandemia di colera. Originatasi in India e in Asia Centrale nel 1883, arrivò in Russia negli anni 1892-1893, dove causò la morte di circa 400 000 persone. Čechov, in quanto medico di professione, nel 1892 si dedicò all’attività di dottore, fornendo cure ai contadini dei numerosi villaggi situati intorno alla sua tenuta di Melichovo, rifiutando qualsiasi compenso. Questa esperienza si riflette sia nei documenti relativi alla sua attività professionale, sia nella sua eredità epistolare, che viene considerata dagli studiosi parte integrante della sua prosa letteraria in quanto ne presenta le stesse caratteristiche stilistiche e narrative. Questo articolo analizza la rappresentazione di quei tragici eventi da una doppia prospettiva: da un lato dal punto di vista di Čechov-medico e dall’altro dal punto di vista di Čechov-scrittore. Si pone attenzione ai seguenti aspetti: 1) la descrizione del colera come un essere animato, tratto tipico del meccanismo di mitologizzazione della malattia nell’immaginario collettivo; 2) la rappresentazione degli umori apocalittici presenti nel popolo, che conferiscono all'epidemia lo status di punizione celeste; 3) la considerazione dei focolai dell’epidemia come ʻspazi mortiʼ.

Fairy tales are fascinating fantasies, but they also gave people a better understanding of serious issues such as illness, injury, and even death. The results of the analysis of a large corpus of a total of 1512 published fairy tales, legends, and other documentary prose about Pohorje, most of which date back to the 19th and the first half of 20th centuries, and whose origins were in a time when diseases were ubiquitous and poorly understood, show that the theme of health and disease rarely appear in these sources, however, when they do mention it, they refer specifically to the living conditions of people in the Pohorje Mountains, epidemics, social diseases, mental illnesses, congenital deformities, and ideas about the relationship between disease, the human body, and supernatural forces. I racconti autobiografici di malattia sono da una ventina d’anni oggetto di interesse interdisciplinare, in particolare all’interno delle medical humanities, ma anche, dopo una prima diffidenza, da parte degli studi letterari. Proprio la critica si è trovata inizialmente a non sapere come considerare questi testi che, per via del tema trattato, sembrano appellarsi unicamente a una risposta compassionevole da parte del lettore. L'intento di questo contributo è invece di concentrarsi sulla struttura di questi racconti, che offrono l'occasione di mettere in discussione alcune nozioni narratologiche e indagare come i significati etici legati al testo vengono costruiti nel processo di ricezione. In particolare, verrà messa in luce la dinamica interazionale in cui sono collocati diversi elementi associati alla narrazione, quali il genere di riferimento, la progressione della trama, la postura autoriale e le tracce paratestuali. Illness memoirs have been scrutinized by various disciplines for about twenty years, especially within the medical humanities. Literary studies have been focusing on illness narratives too, although it took some time to overcome the skepticism that surrounded these problematic texts, which used to be considered as lacking in aesthetic quality. On the contrary, this essay seeks to show how illness memoirs can even question some narratological concepts and challenge the way ethical meanings are identified in the text. In order to highlight the genre expectations that play an important role in the reception and in the composition of illness memoirs, I will draw attention on some aspects such as plot progression, authorial posture and paratextual elements.

Dopo aver criticato l’accezione diffusa che intende il sintomo come sinonimo di malattia, segno del cattivo funzionamento di un organo specifico, e la ricerca di abolirlo per realizzare una restitutio ad integrum, viene proposta una concezione del sintomo come segno di un disagio del soggetto nella sua unitarietà e quindi simbolo del sistema di significati che costituiscono il soggetto stesso. Dalla decodificazione del simbolo si evince sia il punto di blocco del sistema-soggetto sia la maggiore complessità cui il soggetto tende.

This paper attempts to describe the political situation in Italy in the summer of 1471, when Borso d’Este, recently promoted to duke of Ferrara, got sick, therefore the other Italian states started to organize the succession. Being difficult to obtain information about the illness of Borso, Mantua and Milan decided that they would support Niccolò d’Este as successor; he was son of a Gonzaga princess, but had only few supporters in Ferrarese. On the other hand Venice supported Ercole d’Este, brother and intimate of Borso and much stronger than the rival into the town. We can follow the development of the situation reading the letters of Niccolò Ariosti, father of the famous poet Ludovico, who was partner of both Este and Gonzaga families. When Borso finally died, on August 20th, Milan and Mantua became aware of the weakness of their candidate and Ercole easily achieved the lordship over Ferrara.

As shown in our previous paper ('Regression I. Experimental approaches to regression', JAP, 65, 2, 345-65), the common mechanism of regression can be described as reversible dedifferentiation, which is understood as a relative increase of the proportion of low-differentiated (older) systems in actualized experience. Experimental data show that regression following disease (chronic tension headache) is followed by adaptation and an increase in system differentiation in that experience domain which contains systems responsible for that adaptation. The results of mathematical modelling support the idea that reversible dedifferentiation can be one of the mechanisms for increasing the effectiveness of adaptation through learning. Reversible dedifferentiation, which is phenomenologically described as regression, is a general mechanism for restructuring the organism-environment interactions in situations where behaviours that were effective in the past become ineffective. Reversible dedifferentiation has evolved as a component of adaptation when new behaviours are formed and large-scale modifications in the existing behaviours are required in the face of changes in the external and/or internal environment. Thus, the authors believe that this article provides evidence for Jung's view that regression is not only a 'return' to past forms of thinking, affects and behaviour, but that regressive processes provide a significant impetus for psychological growth and development. The concept of regression is considered with an emphasis on the differences between the positions of Freud and Jung regarding its significance. The paper discusses the results of experimental analyses of individual experience dynamics (from gene expression changes and impulse neuronal activity in animals to prosocial behaviour in healthy humans at different ages, and humans in chronic pain) in those situations where regression occurs: stress, disease, learning, highly emotional states and alcohol intoxication. Common mechanisms of regression in all these situations are proposed. The mechanisms of regression can be described as reversible dedifferentiation, which is understood as a relative increase of the representation of low-differentiated (older) systems in the actualized experience. In all of the cases of dedifferentiation mentioned above, the complexity of the systemic organization of behaviour significantly decreases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The physiotherapist in clinical practice uses the hands, which professionally touch and are touched by the patient. This is a tactile dimension of medicine that calls for humanistic knowledge and understanding in the sense that, alongside the body as an 'object' and the disease as a phenomenon, the physiotherapist encounters a body that is a 'person' and a subject who is living his illness. The short story Gracchus Hunter written by Franz Kafka (1917) is about the ‘unheimlich’ adventure of Gracchus, a dead man traveller and Kafka’s alter ego, who is unable to overcome the limits of life. The inattentive boatman Charon takes a wrong path and Gracchus is compelled to roam in the sea - that is in the border between life and death - forever. This story is an allegory of Kafka's existential condition of illness and discomfort.

This text is published as postface to the new edition of Invention de l'hystérie. Charcot et l’iconographie photographique de l’hystérie (Macula, 2012, pp. 364-405) with the title Des images et des maux. It’s also the full version of the lecture organized by the Association Psychanalytique de France (September 24, 2011), entitled L’Usage de la sublimation. Starting from some considerations on his first book, the Author examines limits and potentials of the notion of sublimation in reference with art and artistic creation, and suggests a different way to approach it.

The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) of the World Health Organization (WHO) is an innovative classification that allows one to evaluate the individual's health from a new perspective based on the dynamic relationships existing between the biological domain, the psychological one, and that of social interaction or participation. The aim of the ICF is to provide a standard, unified language for describing the health and disability status generated by the interaction between the individual and their environment.
