We investigate the ice-templating behaviour of alumina suspensions by in-situ X-rays radiography and tomography. We focus here on the formation and structure of the transitional zone, which takes place during the initials instants of freezing. For many applications, this part is undesirable since the resulting porosity is heterogeneous, in size, morphology and orientation. We investigate the influence of the composition of alumina suspensions on the formation of the transitional zone. Alumina particles are dispersed by three different dispersants, in various quantities, or by chlorhydric acid. We show that the height and the morphology of the transitional zone are determined by the growth of large dendritic ice-crystals growing in a supercooled state, and growing much faster than the cellular freezing front. When the freezing temperature decreases, the degree of supercooling increases. This results in a faster freezing front velocity and increases the dimensions of the transitional zone. It is therefore possible to adjust the dimensions of the transitional zone by changing the composition of alumina suspensions. The counter-ion Na+ has the most dramatic influence on the freezing temperature of suspensions, yielding a predominance of cellular ice crystals instead of the usual lamellar crystals., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

The freezing of colloidal suspensions is encountered in many natural and engineering processes. It can be harnessed through a process known as ice templating, to produce porous materials and composites exhibiting unique functional properties. The phenomenon by itself appears simple: a solidification interface propagates through a colloidal suspension. We are nevertheless still far from a complete understanding and control of the phenomenon. Such lack of control is reflected in the very large scattering of mechanical properties reported for ice-templated ceramics, largely due to the formation of structural defects. Through systematic in situ investigations, we demonstrate here the role of the suspension composition and the role of particle-particle electrostatic interactions on defect formation during ice templating. Flocculation can occur in the intercrystal space, leading to a destabilisation of the solid/liquid interface triggering the growth of crystals perpendicular to the main ice growth direction. This mechanism largely contributes to the formation of structural defects and explains, to a large extent, the scattering of compressive strength values reported in the literature., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures

The freezing of colloidal suspensions is encountered in many natural and engineering processes such as the freezing of soils, food engineering, and cryobiology. It can also be used as a bio-inspired, versatile, and environmentally-friendly processing route for porous materials and composites. Yet, it is still a puzzling phenomenon with many unexplained features, due to the complexity of the system and the space and time scales at which the process should be investigated. We demonstrate here the interest of fast X-ray computed tomography to provide time-lapse, three-dimensional, in situ imaging of ice crystal growth in a colloidal silica suspension. The experimental measurements show that the local increase of colloid concentration does not affect the growth kinetics of the crystals, until the colloidal particles become closely packed. For particles much smaller than ice crystals, the concentrated colloidal suspension is equivalent to a simple liquid phase with higher viscosity and a freezing point determined by the concentration of colloidal particles., Comment: 22 pages, 12 figures

The solidification behaviour of suspensions of alumina particles during directional solidification is investigated here by in situ observations using X-ray radiography and tomography. The objective of this study is to assess the influence of particle size on the solidification behaviour of the suspensions during the early stages of solidification. Four powders with particle size in the range 0.2-3.4{\mu}m (median size) were investigated. Solidification is obtained by cooling at a constant rate, starting from room temperature. Attention is specifically paid to the nucleation and growth behaviour of the ice crystals in these suspensions. We propose that the nucleation of ice crystals is controlled by the particle size, the surface of the particles acting as nucleation sites. Smaller particle size leads to a lower degree of supercooling since nucleation and growth can proceed at higher temperature than with larger particles. The initial interface velocity is dependent on the degree of supercooling, and controls the extent of the initial structural gradient in the resulting porous materials., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Colloidal particles are often seen as big atoms that can be directly observed in real space. They are therefore playing an increasingly important role as model systems to study processes of interest in condensed matter physics such as melting, freezing and glass transitions. The solidification of colloidal suspensions has long been a puzzling phenomenon with many unexplained features. Here we demonstrate and rationalize the existence of instability and metastability domains in cellular solidification of colloidal suspensions, by direct in situ high-resolution X-ray radiography and tomography observations. We explain such interface instabilities by a partial Brownian diffusion of the particles leading to constitutional supercooling situations. Processing under unstable conditions leads to localized and global kinetic instabilities of the solid/liquid interface, affecting the crystals morphology and particle redistribution behaviour., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures

Ice templating of colloidal suspension is gaining interest in material science because it offers the possibility to shape advanced materials, and in particular porous ceramics. Recent investigations on this peculiar process show that a correlation between the morphology of the frozen suspension and the velocity of the freezing front do exist. The dynamics of the freezing front of a colloidal suspension of alumina is investigated in the present study by experimental tests, finite element numerical analysis and theoretical analytical calculations. The experimental tests are carried out by in situ X-ray radiography (investigation of the dynamics of the freezing front) and tomography (investigation of the resulting morphology of the frozen suspension). The finite element model is a continuous properties model; it is used for investigating the dynamics and the shape of the freezing front. The analytical model is based on the two-phase Stefan problem. Detailed characterization of damage and rupture mechanics of arteries is one the current challenges in vascular biomechanics, which requires developing suitable experimental approaches. This paper introduces an approach using in situ tensile tests in an X-ray micro-tomography setup to observe mechanisms of damage initiation and progression in medial layers of porcine aortic samples. The technique requires the use of sodium polytungstate as a contrast agent, of which the conditions for use are detailed in this paper. Immersion of the samples during 24 hours in a 15 g.L-1 concentrated solution provided the best compromise for viewing musculo-elastic units in this tissue. The process of damage initiation, delamination and rupture of medial tissue under tensile loading was observed and can be described as an elementary process repeating several times until complete failure. This elementary process initiates with a sudden mode I fracture of a group of musculo-elastic units, followed by an elastic recoil of these units, causing mode II separation of these, hence a delamination plane. The presented experimental approach constitutes a basis for observation of other constituents, or for investigations on other tissues and damage mechanisms., Comment: Preprint version. This paper investigates the behaviour of colloidal suspensions of alumina particles during directional solidification, by in situ high-resolution observations using X-ray radiography and tomography. This second part is focussed on the evolution of ice crystals during steady state growth (in terms of interface velocity) and on the particles redistribution taking place in this regime. In particular, it is shown that diffusion cannot determine the concentration profile and the particles redistribution in this regime of interface velocities (20-40 microns/s); constitutional supercooling arguments cannot be invoked to interpret particles redistribution. Particles are redistributed by a direct interaction with the moving solidification interface. Several parameters controlling the particles redistribution were identified, namely the interface velocity, the particle size, the shape of the ice crystals and the orientation relationships between the crystals and the temperature gradient., Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures

This paper investigates by in situ high-resolution X-ray radiography and tomography the behaviour of colloidal suspensions of alumina particles during directional solidification by freezing. The combination of these techniques provided both qualitative and quantitative information about the propagation kinetic of the solid/liquid interface, the particles redistribution between the crystals and a particle enriched phase and the 3D organisation of the ice crystals. In this first part of two companion papers, the precursor phenomena leading to directional crystallisation during the first instants of solidification is studied. Mullins-Sekerka instabilities are not necessary to explain the dynamic evolution of the interface pattern. Particle redistribution during these first instants is dependent on the type of crystals growing into the suspension. The insights gained into the mechanisms of solidification of colloidal suspensions may be valuable for the materials processing routes derived for this type of directional solidification (freeze-casting), and of general interest for those interested in the interactions between solidification fronts and inert particles., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures

The possibility to align and organize faceted particles in the bulk offers intriguing possibilities for the design and discovery of materials and architectures exhibiting novel functional properties. The growth of ice crystals can be used to trigger the self-assembly of large, anisotropic particles and consequently to obtain three-dimensional porous materials of large dimensions in a limited amount of time. These mechanisms have not been explored so far due to the difficulty to experimentally investigate these systems. Here we elucidate the self-assembly mechanisms of faceted particles driven by ice growth by a combination of X-ray holotomography and discrete element modeling, providing insights into both the dynamics of self-assembly and their final packing. The encapsulation of particles is the result of a delicate balance between the force exerted by the percolating network of concentrated particles and the force exerted by the moving interface. We demonstrate a facile method to produce crystallographically textured, macroporous materials using a combination of modified ice templating and templated grain growth (TGG). The process is demonstrated on alumina and the lead-free piezoelectric material sodium potassium niobate. The method provides macroporous materials with aligned, lamellar ceramic walls which are made up of crystallographically aligned grains. Each method showed that the ceramic walls present a long-range order over the entire sample dimensions and have crystallographic texture as a result of the TGG process. We also present a modification of the March-Dollase equation to better characterize the overall texture of materials with textured but slightly misaligned walls. High strength and high toughness are usually mutually exclusive in engineering materials. Improving the toughness of strong but brittle materials like ceramics thus relies on the introduction of a metallic or polymeric ductile phase to dissipate energy, which conversely decreases the strength, stiffness, and the ability to operate at high temperature. In many natural materials, toughness is achieved through a combination of multiple mechanisms operating at different length scales but such structures have been extremely difficult to replicate. Building upon such biological structures, we demonstrate a simple approach that yields bulk ceramics characterized by a unique combination of high strength (470 MPa), high toughness (22 MPa.m1/2), and high stiffness (290 GPa) without the assistance of a ductile phase. Because only mineral constituents were used, this material retains its mechanical properties at high temperature (600{\deg}C).
