In this study, based on the characteristics of the rod matrix and the dentate plate magnetic matrix, the thread magnetic matrix is proposed. The numerical simulation technology and model test are utilized to analyze the magnetic field distribution characteristics of the thread magnetic matrix and the effects of structure parameters on magnetic field distribution characteristics are investigated. Firstly, the numerical simulation results indicate that the magnetic induction intensity on the sharp corner of the magnetic matrix is higher, which is inferred to be the magnetic particle adsorption zone, while the valley portion is inferred to be the magnetic particle exclusion zone owing to the low magnetic induction intensity comparing to the sharp corner. Besides, the suitable sharp angle of the magnetic matrix is 60° owing to the high magnetic field force and wide magnetic particle adsorption area and the magnetic particle exclusion zone on the valley region of the threaded magnetic matrix gradually shrink with the increase of the thread pitch and the appropriate thread pitch of the threaded magnetic matrix is 1.0 mm owing to the high magnetic field force. Moreover, the results of the model test indicate that the numerical simulation results are basically consistent with the measured results which prove the numerical simulation results are credible. Furthermore, the adsorption morphology of magnetic particles demonstrates that the magnetic particles are adsorbed on the sharp corner and the magnetic particle exclusion zone in the valley region gradually shrink with the increase of the thread pitch. These results further indicate the inference which the sharp corner of threaded matrix is the adsorption zone of the magnetic particle, while the valley region is the exclusion zone is correct. This study has certain guiding significance for the development of new type magnetic matrices and the application of high gradient magnetic separation technology. Abstract High gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) has witnessed widespread application in many scientific and industrial fields. In this paper, the favorable aspect ratio of matrices in axial HGMS was investigated, providing that matrices' cross-section area were equal. Particle capture models for different circumstances were derived and selection method of applicable particle capture models for specific conditions when varying matrix aspect ratio γ (1/4 ∼ 5) was put forward. Particle capture cross section of matrices under a variety of conditions were depicted and quantified. The horizontal and vertical dimension of the particle capture cross section increases and decreases with the increase of aspect ratio, respectively. The particle capture cross section area increases rapidly and slowly before and after reaching magnetization saturation. There exists a favorable matrix aspect ratio at which the particle capture cross section area (particle capture efficiency) reaches the maximum. The favorable aspect ratio is induction dependent and decreases with the increase of magnetic induction. In scientific studies and industrial practice employing axial HGMS, matrices with the favorable aspect ratio can be adopted basing on results of this investigation, which is quite beneficial for the recovery of fine weakly magnetic particles. High gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) has been widely applied in many scientific and industrial fields. The performance of matrix in HGMS varied greatly before and after reaching magnetization saturation. Particle capture models of unsaturated and saturated matrices had been established in previous studies. Problems remained that how to determine the demarcation of applied magnetic induction for selecting the right capture models in specific studies. This is remarkably essential for the investigation of effect of matrix shape (aspect ratio) on performance of matrix in HGMS. In the present paper, magnetization process of circular matrix with increasing applied magnetic induction was investigated through numerical simulation and theoretical calculations. A convenient method to determine the demarcation point was proposed. The internal magnetic induction of matrix is equal to magnetization before reaching saturation and has the same growth rate as applied magnetic induction after reaching saturation. The demagnetization of matrix is half of the magnetization before and after reaching saturation. Validity of the coefficients adopted in the particle capture models in the whole range of applied induction is investigated with the internal magnetic induction, aiming to determine the demarcation point for selecting the right particle capture models. Results showed that the demarcation of the applied magnetic induction for circular matrix is M s /2. HGMS is effective in separating or filtering fine and weakly magnetic particles and widely applied in mineral processing, water treatment, cell and protein purification. The magnetic matrix is a crucial device used in magnetic separator to generate high magnetic field gradient and provide surface sites for capturing magnetic particles. The material, geometry, size and arrangement of the matrix elements can significantly affect the gradient and distribution of the magnetic field, and the separating or filtrating performance. We report a new method for multistep peptide synthesis on polymeric nanoparticles of differing sizes. Polymeric nanoparticles were functionalized via their temporary embedment into a magnetic inorganic matrix that allows multistep peptide synthesis. The matrix is removed at the end of the process for obtaining nanoparticles functionalized with peptides. Abstract: This paper presents a design and the corresponding mathematical study for the construction of a spatial geometric structure that we denominate the building block. The construction procedure is simple. Starting with two squares, we define and construct what we call the module. Next, we consider a fixed number of modules that generate the structure of the building block. We study the different possible connections among the building blocks, through which we define the so called matrix. We also demonstrate that this interconnection process turns out to be mathematically consistent. Finally, we propose a list of possible applications for the studied structures (involving areas such as education, sport sciences, molecular and architectural designs, etc.). [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
