Context. The fate of a massive star during the latest stages of its evolution is highly dependent on its mass-loss rate/geometry and therefore knowing the geometry of the circumstellar material close to the star and its surroundings is crucial. Aims. We aim to study the nature (i.e. geometry, rates) of mass-loss episodes. In this context, yellow hypergiants are great targets. Methods. We analyse a large set of optical/near-infrared data, in spectroscopic and photometric (X-shooter/VLT), spectropolarimetric (ISIS/WHT), and interferometric GRAVITY-AMBER/VLTI) modes, toward the yellow hypergiant IRAS 17163-3907. We present the first model-independent reconstructed images of IRAS 17163-3907 at these wavelengths at milli-arcsecond scales. Lastly, we apply a 2D radiative transfer model to fit the dereddened photometry and the radial profiles of published VISIR images at 8.59 {\mu}m, 11.85 {\mu}m and 12.81 {\mu}m simultaneously, adopting the revised Gaia distance (DR2). Results. The interferometric observables around 2 {\mu}m show that the Br{\gamma} emission is more extended and asymmetric than the Na i and the continuum emission. In addition to the two known shells surrounding IRAS 17163-3907 we report on the existence of a third hot inner shell with a maximum dynamical age of only 30 yr. Conclusions. The interpretation of the presence of Na i emission at closer distances to the star compared to Br{\gamma} has been a challenge in various studies. We argue that the presence of a pseudophotosphere is not needed, but it is rather an optical depth effect. The three observed distinct mass-loss episodes are characterised by different mass-loss rates and can inform the theories on mass-loss mechanisms, which is a topic still under debate. Post-AGB stars are exquisite probes of AGB nucleosynthesis. However, the previous lack of accurate distances jeopardised comparison with theoretical AGB models. The $Gaia$ Early Data Release 3 ($Gaia$ EDR3) has now allowed for a breakthrough in this research landscape. In this study, we focus on a sample of single Galactic post-AGBs for which chemical abundance studies were completed. We combined photometry with geometric distances to carry out a spectral energy distribution (SED) analysis and derive accurate luminosities. We subsequently determined their positions on the HR-diagram and compared this with theoretical post-AGB evolutionary tracks. While most objects are in the post-AGB phase of evolution, we found a subset of low-luminosity objects that are likely to be in the post-horizontal branch phase of evolution, similar to AGB-manqu\'e objects found in globular clusters. Additionally, we also investigated the observed bi-modality in the $s$-process enrichment of Galactic post-AGB single stars of similar Teff, and metallicities. This bi-modality was expected to be a direct consequence of luminosity with the $s$-process rich objects having evolved further on the AGB. However, we find that the two populations: the $s$-process enriched and non-enriched, have similar luminosities (and hence initial masses), revealing an intriguing chemical diversity. For a given initial mass and metallicity, AGB nucleosynthesis appears inhomogeneous and sensitive to other factors which could be mass-loss, along with convective and non-convective mixing mechanisms. The relative distribution of molecular gas and star formation in galaxies gives insight into the physical processes and timescales of the cycle between gas and stars. In this work, we track the relative spatial configuration of CO and H$\alpha$ emission at high resolution in each of our galaxy targets, and use these measurements to quantify the distributions of regions in different evolutionary stages of star formation: from molecular gas without star formation traced by H$\alpha$ to star-forming gas, and to HII regions. The large sample, drawn from the Physics at High Angular resolution in Nearby GalaxieS ALMA and narrowband H$\alpha$ (PHANGS-ALMA and PHANGS-H$\alpha$) surveys, spans a wide range of stellar mass and morphological types, allowing us to investigate the dependencies of the gas-star formation cycle on global galaxy properties. At a resolution of 150 pc, the incidence of regions in different stages shows a dependence on stellar mass and Hubble type of galaxies over the radial range probed. Massive and/or earlier-type galaxies exhibit a significant reservoir of molecular gas without star formation traced by H$\alpha$, while lower-mass galaxies harbor substantial HII regions that may have dispersed their birth clouds or formed from low-mass, more isolated clouds. Galactic structures add a further layer of complexity to relative distribution of CO and H$\alpha$ emission. Trends between galaxy properties and distributions of gas traced by CO and H$\alpha$ are visible only when the observed spatial scale is $\ll$ 500 pc, reflecting the critical resolution requirement to distinguish stages of star formation process., Comment: 60 pages, 22 figures, 9 tables, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Context. Classical Cepheids are primary distance indicators and a crucial stepping stone in determining the present-day value of the Hubble constant H0 to the precision and accuracy required to constrain apparent deviations from the ΛCDM Concordance Cosmological Model. Aims. We measured the iron and oxygen abundances of a statistically significant sample of 89 Cepheids in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), one of the anchors of the local distance scale, quadrupling the prior sample and including 68 of the 70 Cepheids used to constrain H0 by the SH0ES program. The goal is to constrain the extent to which the luminosity of Cepheids is influenced by their chemical composition, which is an important contributor to the uncertainty on the determination of the Hubble constant itself and a critical factor in the internal consistency of the distance ladder. Methods. We derived stellar parameters and chemical abundances from a self-consistent spectroscopic analysis based on equivalent width of absorption lines. Results. The iron distribution of Cepheids in the LMC can be very accurately described by a single Gaussian with a mean [Fe/H] = −0.409 ± 0.003 dex and σ = 0.076 ± 0.003 dex. We estimate a systematic uncertainty on the absolute mean values of 0.1 dex. The width of the distribution is fully compatible with the measurement error and supports the low dispersion of 0.069 mag seen in the near-infrared Hubble Space Telescope LMC period–luminosity relation. The uniformity of the abundance has the important consequence that the LMC Cepheids alone cannot provide any meaningful constraint on the dependence of the Cepheid period–luminosity relation on chemical composition at any wavelength. This revises a prior claim based on a small sample of 22 LMC Cepheids that there was little dependence (or uncertainty) between composition and near-infrared luminosity, a conclusion which would produce an apparent conflict between anchors of the distance ladder with different mean abundance. The chemical homogeneity of the LMC Cepheid population makes it an ideal environment in which to calibrate the metallicity dependence between the more metal-poor Small Magellanic Cloud and metal-rich Milky Way and NGC 4258.

We develop a cosmological model for the evolution of dust grains in galaxies with a distribution of sizes in order to understand the origin of the Milky Way dust extinction curve. Our model considers the formation of active dust in evolved stars, growth by accretion and coagulation, and destruction processes via shattering, sputtering, and astration in the ISM of galaxies over cosmic time. Our main results follow. Galaxies in our cosmological model with masses comparable to the Milky Way's at z~0 exhibit a diverse range of extinction laws, though with slopes and bump strengths comparable to the range observed in the Galaxy. The progenitors of the Milky Way have steeper slopes, and only flatten to slopes comparable to the Galaxy at $z \approx 1$. This owes to increased grain growth rates at late times/in high-metallicity environments driving up the ratio of large to small grains, with a secondary dependence on the graphite to silicate ratio evolution. The UV bump strengths depend primarily on the graphite to silicate ratio, and remain broadly constant in MW-like galaxies between z=3 and z=0, though show slight variability. Our models span comparable regions of bump-slope space as sightlines in the Galaxy do, though there is a lack of clear relationship between the model slopes and bump strengths owing to small scale fluctuations in the bump strength. Our models naturally produce slopes for some non-Milky Way analogs as steep as those of the LMC and SMC in metal poor galaxies, though notably the bump strengths are, on average, too large when comparing to the Magellanic clouds. This owes to the fact that we evolve the grain size distributions of graphites and silicates simultaneously, which is an oversimplification. The dust mass absorption coefficient, $\kappa_{d}$, is the conversion function used to infer physical dust masses from observations of dust emission. However, it is notoriously poorly constrained, and it is highly uncertain how it varies, either between or within galaxies. Here we present the results of a proof-of concept study, using the DustPedia data for two nearby face-on spiral galaxies M74 (NGC 628) and M83 (NGC 5236), to create the first ever maps of $\kappa_{d}$ in galaxies. We determine $\kappa_{d}$ using an empirical method that exploits the fact that the dust-to-metals ratio of the interstellar medium is constrained by direct measurements of the depletion of gas-phase metals. We apply this method pixel-by-pixel within M74 and M83, to create maps of $\kappa_{d}$. We also demonstrate a novel method of producing metallicity maps for galaxies with irregularly-sampled measurements, using the machine learning technique of Gaussian process regression. We find strong evidence for significant variation in $\kappa_{d}$. We find values of $\kappa_{d}$ at 500 $\mu$m spanning the range 0.11-0.25 ${\rm m^{2}\,kg^{-1}}$ in M74, and 0.15-0.80 ${\rm m^{2}\,kg^{-1}}$ in M83. Surprisingly, we find that $\kappa_{d}$ shows a distinct inverse correlation with the local density of the interstellar medium. This inverse correlation is the opposite of what is predicted by standard dust models. However, we find this relationship to be robust against a large range of changes to our method - only the adoption of unphysical or highly unusual assumptions would be able to suppress it., Comment: Corrected typographical error in Equation A1, as per erratum accepted by MNRAS on 20th April 2022. Understanding how dust attenuation laws vary between and within galaxies is a key question if we want to reliably measure the physical properties of galaxies at both global and local scales. To shed new light on this question, we present a detailed study of the slope and bump strength of the attenuation law in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC628 at the resolved spatial scale of 325 pc. To do so, we have modelled a broad multi-wavelength dataset from the ultraviolet (UV) to the infrared (IR) with the state-of-the-art SED fitting code CIGALE, including SWIFT UVOT data for which we have developed a new optimized reduction pipeline. We find that the median dust attenuation curve of NGC628 is fairly steep, but not as steep as the SMC curve, and has a sub-MW-type UV bump. We observe intriguing variations within the galaxy, with regions of high $A_V$ exhibiting a shallower attenuation curve. We argue that the flattening of the curve is due to a dominance of absorption-over-scattering events at higher $A_V$. No trend between the bump strength and the IRAC 8.0 micron emission was found. We aim to use statistical analysis of a large number of various galaxies to probe, model, and understand relations between different galaxy properties and magnetic fields. We have compiled a sample of 55 galaxies including low-mass dwarf and Magellanic-types, normal spirals and several massive starbursts, and applied principal component analysis (PCA) and regression methods to assess the impact of various galaxy properties on the observed magnetic fields. According to PCA the global galaxy parameters (like HI, H2, and dynamical mass, star formation rate (SFR), near-infrared luminosity, size, and rotational velocity) are all mutually correlated and can be reduced to a single principal component. Further PCA performed for global and intensive (not size related) properties of galaxies (such as gas density, and surface density of the star formation rate, SSFR), indicates that magnetic field strength B is connected mainly to the intensive parameters, while the global parameters have only weak relationships with B. We find that the tightest relationship of B is with SSFR, which is described by a power-law with an index of 0.33+-0.03. The observed weaker associations of B with galaxy dynamical mass and the rotational velocity we interpret as indirect ones, resulting from the observed connection of the global SFR with the available total H2 mass in galaxies. Using our sample we constructed a diagram of B across the Hubble sequence which reveals that high values of B are not restricted by the Hubble type. However, weaker fields appear exclusively in later Hubble types and B as low as about 5muG is not seen among typical spirals. The processes of generation of magnetic field in the dwarf and Magellanic-type galaxies are similar to those in the massive spirals and starbursts and are mainly coupled to local star-formation activity involving the small-scale dynamo mechanism., 9 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

The classical dwarf spheroidals (dSphs) provide a critical test for Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) because they are observable satellite galactic systems with low internal accelerations and low, but periodically varying, external acceleration. This varying external gravitational field is not commonly found acting on systems with low internal acceleration. Using Jeans modelling, Carina in particular has been demonstrated to require a V-band mass-to-light ratio greater than 5, which is the nominal upper limit for an ancient stellar population. We run MOND N-body simulations of a Carina-like dSph orbiting the Milky Way to test if dSphs in MOND are stable to tidal forces over the Hubble time and if those same tidal forces artificially inflate their velocity dispersions and therefore their apparent mass-to-light ratio. We run many simulations with various initial total masses for Carina, and Galactocentric orbits (consistent with proper motions), and compare the simulation line of sight velocity dispersions (losVDs) with the observed losVDs of Walker et al. (2007). We find that the dSphs are stable, but that the tidal forces are not conducive to artificially inflating the losVDs. Furthermore, the range of mass-to-light ratios that best reproduces the observed line of sight velocity dispersions of Carina is 5.3 to 5.7 and circular orbits are preferred to plunging orbits. Therefore, some tension still exists between the required mass-to-light ratio for the Carina dSph in MOND and those expected from stellar population synthesis models. We report the discovery of one RR Lyrae star in the ultra--faint satellite galaxy Hydra II based on time series photometry in the g, r and i bands obtained with the Dark Energy Camera at Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory, Chile. The RR Lyrae star has a mean magnitude of $i = 21.30\pm 0.04$ which translates to a heliocentric distance of $151\pm 8$ kpc for Hydra II; this value is $\sim 13\%$ larger than the estimate from the discovery paper based on the average magnitude of several blue horizontal branch star candidates. The new distance implies a slightly larger half-light radius of $76^{+12}_{-10}$ pc and a brighter absolute magnitude of $M_V = -5.1 \pm 0.3$, which keeps this object within the realm of the dwarf galaxies. The pulsational properties of the RR Lyrae star ($P=0.645$ d, $\Delta g = 0.68$ mag) suggest Hydra II may be a member of the intermediate Oosterhoff or Oosterhoff II group. A comparison with other RR Lyrae stars in ultra--faint systems indicates similar pulsational properties among them, which are different to those found among halo field stars and those in the largest of the Milky Way satellites. We also report the discovery of 31 additional short period variables in the field of view (RR Lyrae, SX Phe, eclipsing binaries, and a likely anomalous cepheid). However, given their magnitudes and large angular separation from Hydra II, they must be field stars not related to Hydra II., Comment: Revised version after comments from the referee. The only way to detect planets around stars at distances greater than or similar to several kpc is by (photometric or astrometric) microlensing (mu L) observations. In this paper, we show that the capability of photometric mu L extends to the detection of signals caused by planets around stars in nearby galaxies (e.g. M31) and that there is no other method that can achieve this. Due to the large crowding, mu L experiments towards M31 can only observe the high-magnification part of a lensing light curve. Therefore, the dominating channel for mu L signals by planets is in distortions near the peak of high-magnification events as discussed by Griest & Safizadeh (1998). We calculate the probability to detect planetary anomalies for mu L experiments towards M31 and find that jupiter-like planets around stars in M31 can be detected. Though the characterization of the planet(s) involved in this signal will be difficult, the absence of such signals can yield strong constraints on the abundance of jupiter-like planets.

We present high-resolution interferometric data of the inner 30' of the H I gas of the irregular galaxy NGC 4449. In addition to the previously known two counter-rotating gas systems, the H I exhibits an unusual ring morphology and high velocity dispersions in the outer part of the optical galaxy. In addition the position angle and inclination of the outer gas are moderately different from those of the optical galaxy. The position angle and inclination of the inner gas system are approximately similar to those of the inner optical galaxy only if strong deviations from ordered motion in the center are ignored. The H I interstellar medium appears to be fragmented into clouds, which are similar to clouds observed in other galaxies. There is very little correlation between the H I surface density and H alpha surface brightness. The optical isophotes of the galaxy define three different and distinct position angles and inclinations. The inner structure is similar in properties to a bar structure that includes a large fraction of the optical galaxy. The nature of the middle structure is unclear. Exterior to these bars are unusual faint filamentary structures. The V- and J-band surface photometry are well fit by an exponential disk to low surface brightness levels, including the bar structures. However, the central surface brightness is unusually bright. The star formation activity compared over three different time scales as a function of radius is fairly consistent. In the optical there are also unusual extensions at low light levels in the outskirts of the galaxy. Many characteristics of the gas and stars are consistent with a picture in which NGC 4449 has been disturbed by an external perturber, and the gas has not yet returned to equilibrium.

We use Planck HFI data combined with ancillary radio data to study the emissivity index of the interstellar dust emission in the frequency range 100.353 GHz, or 3.0.8 mm, in the Galactic plane. We analyse the region l = 20°44° and |b| ≤ 4° where the free-free emission can be estimated from radio recombination line data. We fit the spectra at each sky pixel with a modified blackbody model and two opacity spectral indices, βmm and βFIR, below and above 353 GHz, respectively. We find that βmm is smaller than βFIR, and we detect a correlation between this low frequency power-law index and the dust optical depth at 353 GHz, 353. The opacity spectral index βmm increases from about 1.54 in the more diffuse regions of the Galactic disk, |b| = 3°4° and τ353 ∼ 5 × 10-5, to about 1.66 in the densest regions with an optical depth of more than one order of magnitude higher. We associate this correlation with an evolution of the dust emissivity related to the fraction of molecular gas along the line of sight. This translates into βmm ∼ 1.54 for a medium that is mostly atomic and βmm ∼ 1.66 when the medium is dominated by molecular gas. We find that both the two-level system model and magnetic dipole emission by ferromagnetic particles can explain the results. We present a new approach for estimating the 3.6 mu m stellar mass-to-light (M/L) ratio Rho 3.6 in terms of the [3.6]-[4.5] colors of old stellar populations. Our approach avoids several of the largest sources of uncertainty in existing techniques using population synthesis models. By focusing on mid-IR wavelengths, we gain a virtually dust extinction-free tracer of the old stars, avoiding the need to adopt a dust model to correctly interpret optical or optical/near-IR colors normally leveraged to assign the mass-to-light ratio.. By calibrating a new relation between near-IR and mid-IR colors of giant stars observed in GLIMPSE we also avoid the discrepancies in model predictions for the [3.6]-[4.5] colors of old stellar populations due to uncertainties in the molecular line opacities assumed in template spectra. We find that the [3.6]-[4.5] color, which is driven primarily by metallicity, provides a tight constraint on.3.6, which varies intrinsically less than at optical wavelengths. The uncertainty on.3.6 of similar to 0.07 dex due to unconstrained age variations marks a significant improvement on existing techniques for estimating the stellar M/L with shorter wavelength data. A single.3.6 = 0.6 (assuming a Chabrier initial mass function (IMF)), independent of [3.6]-[4.5] color, is also feasible because it can be applied simultaneously to old, metal-rich and young, metal-poor populations, and still with comparable (or better) accuracy (similar to 0.1 dex) than alternatives. We expect our.3.6 to be optimal formapping the stellarmass distributions in S(4)G galaxies, for which we have developed an independent component analysis technique to first isolate the old stellar light at 3.6 mu m from nonstellar emission (e. g., hot dust and the 3.3 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon feature). Our estimate can also be used to determine the fractional contribution of nonstellar emission to global (rest-frame) 3.6 mu m fluxes, e.g., in WISE imaging, and establishes a reliable basis for exploring variations in the stellar IMF.

Data from the Herschel Space Observatory have revealed an unusual elliptical galaxy, NGC 4125, which has strong and extended submillimeter emission from cold dust but only very strict upper limits to its CO and HI emission. Depending on the dust emissivity, the total dust mass is 2-5x10^6 Msun. While the neutral gas-to-dust mass ratio is extremely low (< 12-30), including the ionized gas traced by [CII] emission raises this limit to < 39-100. The dust emission follows a similar r^{1/4} profile to the stellar light and the dust to stellar mass ratio is towards the high end of what is found in nearby elliptical galaxies. We suggest that NGC 4125 is currently in an unusual phase where evolved stars produced in a merger-triggered burst of star formation are pumping large amounts of gas and dust into the interstellar medium. In this scenario, the low neutral gas-to-dust mass ratio is explained by the gas being heated to temperatures >= 10^4 K faster than the dust is evaporated. If galaxies like NGC 4125, where the far-infrared emission does not trace neutral gas in the usual manner, are common at higher redshift, this could have significant implications for our understanding of high redshift galaxies and galaxy evolution., Accepted to ApJ Letters

Mass models for a sample of 18 late-type dwarf and low surface brightness galaxies show that in almost all cases the contribution of the stellar disks to the rotation curves can be scaled to explain most of the observed rotation curves out to two or three disk scale lengths. The concept of a maximum disk, therefore, appears to work as well for these late-type dwarf galaxies as it does for spiral galaxies. Some of the mass-to-light ratios required in our maximum disk fits are high, however, up to about 15 in the R-band, with the highest values occurring in galaxies with the lowest surface brightnesses. Equally well-fitting mass models can be obtained with much lower mass-to-light ratios. Regardless of the actual contribution of the stellar disk, the fact that the maximum disk can explain the inner parts of the observed rotation curves highlights the similarity in shapes of the rotation curve of the stellar disk and the observed rotation curve. This similarity implies that the distribution of the total mass density is closely coupled to that of the luminous mass density in the inner parts of late-type dwarf galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

Scores of on-going microlensing events are now announced yearly by the microlensing discovery teams OGLE, MACHO and EROS. These early warning systems have allowed other international microlensing networks to focus considerable resources on intense photometric and occasionally spectroscopic - monitoring of microlensing events. Early results include: metallicity measurements of main sequence Galactic bulge stars; limb darkening determinations for stars in the Bulge and Small Magellanic Cloud; proper motion measurements that constrain microlens identity; and constraints on Jovian-mass planets orbiting (presumably stellar) lenses. These results and auxiliary science such as variable star studies and optical identification of gamma ray bursts are reviewed.

These results and auxiliary science such as variable star studies and optical identification of gamma ray bursts are reviewed.

Scores of on-going microlensing events are now announced yearly by the microlensing discovery teams OGLE, MACHO and EROS. These early warning systems have allowed other international microlensing networks to focus considerable resources on intense photometric and occasionally spectroscopic - monitoring of microlensing events. Early results include: metallicity measurements of main sequence Galactic bulge stars; limb darkening determinations for stars in the Bulge and Small Magellanic Cloud; proper motion measurements that constrain microlens identity; and constraints on Jovian-mass planets orbiting (presumably stellar) lenses. These results and auxiliary science such as variable star studies and optical identification of gamma ray bursts are reviewed.

We present high-resolution interferometric data of the inner 30' of the H I gas of the irregular galaxy NGC 4449. In addition to the previously known two counter-rotating gas systems, the H I exhibits an unusual ring morphology and high velocity dispersions in the outer part of the optical galaxy. In addition the position angle and inclination of the outer gas are moderately different from those of the optical galaxy. The position angle and inclination of the inner gas system are approximately similar to those of the inner optical galaxy only if strong deviations from ordered motion in the center are ignored. The H I interstellar medium appears to be fragmented into clouds, which are similar to clouds observed in other galaxies. There is very little correlation between the H I surface density and H alpha surface brightness. The optical isophotes of the galaxy define three different and distinct position angles and inclinations. The inner structure is similar in properties to a bar structure that includes a large fraction of the optical galaxy. The nature of the middle structure is unclear. Exterior to these bars are unusual faint filamentary structures. The V- and J-band surface photometry are well fit by an exponential disk to low surface brightness levels, including the bar structures. However, the central surface brightness is unusually bright. The star formation activity compared over three different time scales as a function of radius is fairly consistent. In the optical there are also unusual extensions at low light levels in the outskirts of the galaxy. Many characteristics of the gas and stars are consistent with a picture in which NGC 4449 has been disturbed by an external perturber, and the gas has not yet returned to equilibrium.

The only way to detect planets around stars at distances of several kpc is by (photometric or astrometric) microlensing observations. In this paper, we show that the capability of photometric microlensing extends to the detection of signals caused by planets around stars in nearby galaxies (e.g. M31) and that there is no other method that can achieve this. Due to the large crowding, microlensing experiments towards M31 can only observe the high-magnification part of a lensing light curve. Therefore, the dominating channel for microlensing signals by planets is in distortions near the peak of high-magnification events as discussed by Griest and Safizadeh. We calculate the probability to detect planetary anomalies for microlensing experiments towards M31 and find that jupiter-like planets around stars in M31 can be detected. Only a small number of high mass stars (> 30 Mo) have fundamental parameters (i.e. masses and radii) measured with high enough accuracy from eclipsing binaries to constrain formation and evolutionary models of massive stars. This work aims to increase this limited sample, by studying the 4 massive eclipsing binary candidates discovered by Bonanos in the young massive cluster Westerlund 1. We present new follow-up echelle spectroscopy of these binaries and models of their light and radial velocity curves. We obtain fundamental parameters (i.e. masses, radii) for the 8 component stars, finding masses that span a range of 10-40 Mo, and contributing accurate fundamental parameters for 1 additional very massive star, the 33 Mo component of W13. WR77o is found to have a ~40 Mo companion, which provides a second dynamical constraint on the mass of the progenitor of the magnetar known in the cluster. We also use W13 to estimate the first, direct, eclipsing binary distance to Westerlund 1 and therefore the magnetar, and find it to be at 3.7 +/- 0.6 kpc. Our results confirm previous evidence for a high mass for the progenitor of the magnetar. The observed stellar kinematics of dispersion-supported galaxies are often used to measure dynamical masses. Recently, several analytical relationships between the stellar line-of-sight velocity dispersion, the projected (2D) or deprojected (3D) half-light radius, and the total mass enclosed within the half-light radius, relying on the spherical Jeans equation, have been proposed. Here, we make use of the APOSTLE cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of the Local Group to test the validity and accuracy of such mass estimators for both dispersion and rotation-supported galaxies, for field and satellite galaxies, and for galaxies of varying masses, shapes, and velocity dispersion anisotropies. We find that the mass estimators of Walker et al. and Wolf et al. are able to recover the masses of dispersion-dominated systems with little systematic bias, but with a 1-sigma scatter of 25 and 23 percent, respectively. The error on the estimated mass is dominated by the impact of the 3D shape of the stellar mass distribution, which is difficult to constrain observationally. This intrinsic scatter becomes the dominant source of uncertainty in the masses estimated for galaxies like the dwarf spheroidal (dSph) satellites of the Milky Way, where the observational errors in their sizes and velocity dispersions are small. Such scatter may also affect the inner density slopes of dSphs derived from multiple stellar populations, relaxing the significance with which Navarro-Frenk-White profiles may be excluded, depending on the degree to which the relevant properties of the different stellar populations are correlated. Finally, we derive a new optimal mass estimator that removes the residual biases and achieves a statistically significant reduction in the scatter to 20 percent overall for dispersion-dominated galaxies, allowing more precise and accurate mass estimates., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 26 pages, 21 figures, 3 tables

Context. The Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2) contains more than half a million sources that are identified as variable stars., Aims. We summarise the processing and results of the identification of variable source candidates of RR Lyrae stars, Cepheids, long-period variables (LPVs), rotation modulation (BY Dra-type) stars, delta Scuti and SX Phoenicis stars, and short-timescale variables. In this release we aim to provide useful but not necessarily complete samples of candidates., Methods. The processed Gaia data consist of the G, G(BP), and G(RP) photometry during the first 22 months of operations as well as positions and parallaxes. Various methods from classical statistics, data mining, and time-series analysis were applied and tailored to the specific properties of Gaia data, as were various visualisation tools to interpret the data., Results. The DR2 variability release contains 228 904 RR Lyrae stars, 11 438 Cepheids, 151 761 LPVs, 147 535 stars with rotation modulation, 8882 delta( )Scuti and SX Phoenicis stars, and 3018 short-timescale variables. These results are distributed over a classification and various Specific Object Studies tables in the Gaia archive, along with the three-band time series and associated statistics for the underlying 550 737 unique sources. We estimate that about half of them are newly identified variables. The variability type completeness varies strongly as a function of sky position as a result of the non-uniform sky coverage and intermediate calibration level of these data. The probabilistic and automated nature of this work implies certain completeness and contamination rates that are quantified so that users can anticipate their effects. This means that even well-known variable sources can be missed or misidentified in the published data., Conclusions. The DR2 variability release only represents a small subset of the processed data. Future releases will include more variable sources and data products; however, DR2 shows the (already) very high quality of the data and great promise for variability studies.

The surface brightness -- colour relation (SBCR) is a basic tool in establishing precise and accurate distances within the Local Group. Detached eclipsing binary stars with accurately determined radii and trigonometric parallaxes allow for a calibration of the SBCRs with unprecedented accuracy. We analysed four nearby eclipsing binary stars containing late F-type main sequence components: AL Ari, AL Dor, FM Leo and BN Scl. We determined very precise spectroscopic orbits and combined them with high precision ground- and space-based photometry. We derived the astrophysical parameters of their components with mean errors of 0.1% for mass and 0.4% for radius. We combined those four systems with another 24 nearby eclipsing binaries with accurately known radii from the literature for which $Gaia$ EDR3 parallaxes are available, in order to derive the SBCRs. The resulting SBCRs cover stellar spectral types from B9 V to G7 V. For calibrations we used Johnson optical $B$ and $V$, $Gaia$ $G_{\rm BP}$ and $G$ and 2MASS $JHK$ bands. The most precise relations are calibrated using the infrared $K$ band and allow to predict angular diameters of A-, F-, and G-type dwarf and subgiant stars with a precision of 1%., Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics, 17 pages
