Abstract

Background and aimsLarge clades of angiosperms are often characterized by diverse interactions with pollinators, but how these pollination systems are structured phylogenetically and biogeographically is still uncertain for most families. Apocynaceae is a clade of >5300 species with a worldwide distribution. A database representing >10 % of species in the family was used to explore the diversity of pollinators and evolutionary shifts in pollination systems across major clades and regions.MethodsThe database was compiled from published and unpublished reports. Plants were categorized into broad pollination systems and then subdivided to include bimodal systems. These were mapped against the five major divisions of the family, and against the smaller clades. Finally, pollination systems were mapped onto a phylogenetic reconstruction that included those species for which sequence data are available, and transition rates between pollination systems were calculated.Key resultsMost Apocynaceae are insect pollinated with few records of bird pollination. Almost three-quarters of species are pollinated by a single higher taxon (e.g. flies or moths); 7 % have bimodal pollination systems, whilst the remaining approx. 20 % are insect generalists. The less phenotypically specialized flowers of the Rauvolfioids are pollinated by a more restricted set of pollinators than are more complex flowers within the Apocynoids + Periplocoideae + Secamonoideae + Asclepiadoideae (APSA) clade. Certain combinations of bimodal pollination systems are more common than others. Some pollination systems are missing from particular regions, whilst others are over-represented.ConclusionsWithin Apocynaceae, interactions with pollinators are highly structured both phylogenetically and biogeographically. Variation in transition rates between pollination systems suggest constraints on their evolution, whereas regional differences point to environmental effects such as filtering of certain pollinators from habitats. This is the most extensive analysis of its type so far attempted and gives important insights into the diversity and evolution of pollination systems in large clades.

13. Resupinate floral dimorphy in Chamaecrista nictitans (L.) Moench (Fabaceae-Caesalpinioideae).

Abstract

Context: Resupination is the movement of developing buds that leads to a vertical inversion of the flowers at an angle of 180°. Chamaecrista nictitans exhibits two anther sizes, and nonresupinate and resupinate flowers in the same individual, which is known as monomorphic resupinate dimorphy. Aims: We aimed to investigate the influence of monomorphic resupinate dimorphy upon pollen deposition on pollinators, capture by the stigma and on plant reproduction, using three populations of C. nictitans from NE Brazil as a model. Methods: We assessed the floral biology, the proportion of nonresupinate and resupinate flowers in the populations, dynamics of pollen transfer between floral morphs, and the plant's reproductive system. Key results: All flowers have two anther sizes with similar pollen viability. The proportion of nonresupinate:resupinate flowers was 3:1 in all populations. The bee Florilegus (Euflorilegus) sp. was the only pollinator observed and had pollen of both flower morphs deposited on the underside part of the thorax and abdomen. The stigma of nonresupinate flowers received pollen from the pollinators' underside of the abdomen, whereas the stigma of resupinate flowers received pollen from the pollinators' underside of the thorax. The species is self-compatible but does not set fruits by spontaneous self-pollination. Therefore, natural fruit set had resulted from both intramorph- and intermorph-pollination in the same or in different individuals. Conclusions: Both flower types have a similar pattern of pollen deposition on the pollinator's body (underside of the abdomen and thorax) and only differ in relation to areas of pollen capture by the stigma (underside of the abdomen or underside of thorax). Implications: The monomorphic resupinate dimorphy observed here improves the area of pollen deposition by the anthers on pollinator's body and makes the capture of pollen by stigma sectored in the different floral types, similar to what is observed in other species presenting floral polymorphisms. Resupination is the movement of floral buds that leads to flowers turning upside down. We tested the reproductive functioning of this characteristic in the native legume Chamaecrista nictitans and found that it causes pollen to be deposited in particular portions of pollinators' bodies, improving pollination. Abstract

Aim: We examined the effects of space, climate, phylogeny and species traits on module composition in a cross-biomes plant–hummingbird network. Location: Brazil, except Amazonian region. Methods: We compiled 31 local binary plant–hummingbird networks, combining them into one cross-biomes metanetwork. We conducted a modularity analysis and tested the relationship between species’ module membership with traits, geographical location, climatic conditions and range sizes, employing random forest models. We fitted reduced models containing groups of related variables (climatic, spatial, phylogenetic, traits) and combinations of groups to partition the variance explained by these sets into unique and shared components. Results: The Brazilian cross-biomes network was composed of 479 plant and 42 hummingbird species, and showed significant modularity. The resulting six modules conformed well to vegetation domains. Only plant traits, not hummingbird traits, differed between modules, notably plants’ growth form, corolla length, flower shape and colour. Some modules included plant species with very restricted distributions, whereas others encompassed more widespread ones. Widespread hummingbirds were the most connected, both within and between modules, whereas widespread plants were the most connected between modules. Among traits, only nectar concentration had a weak effect on among-module connectivity. Main conclusions: Climate and spatial filters were the main determinants of module composition for hummingbirds and plants, potentially related to resource seasonality, especially for hummingbirds. Historical dispersal-linked contingency, or environmental variations not accounted for by the explanatory factors here evaluated, could also contribute to the spatial component. Phylogeny and morphological traits had no unique effects on the assignment of species to modules. Widespread species showed higher within- and/or among-module connectivity, indicating their key role connecting biomes, and, in the case of hummingbirds, communities within biomes. Our results indicate that biogeography and climate not only determine the variation of modularity in local plant–animal networks, as previously shown, but also affect the cross-biomes network structure.

Abstract

Studies about reproductive aspects of angiosperms rarely refer to herbaceous and anemophilous groups. Cyperaceae are cosmopolitan and diverse in terms of sexuality, inflorescence architecture, and pollination modes, such as anemophily, entomophily, and ambophily. Therefore, the evolution of reproductive traits can clarify some questions about the reproductive biology of angiosperms, especially regarding the transitions between biotic and abiotic pollination. This study was designed to investigate the evolution of reproductive traits in Cyperaceae through comparative phylogenetic methods, such as reconstruction of ancestral states and evolutionary correlation. If spicoids in Mapanioideae are indeed inflorescences, the bisexual flower in Cyperaceae would be derived, a rare case in angiosperms. In Cyperoideae, a decrease in the number of flowers and an increase in stamen loss events were observed. This result contradicts the hypothesized increase in reproductive structures in anemophilous species, in which a greater amount of pollen is produced to compensate for the waste generated by wind. Only one correlation was found: between the number of inflorescence branches and the number of reproductive units per inflorescence. Finally, the analyses showed the great diversity of reproductive biology in Cyperaceae and made evident the need to expand the theoretical studies to refine the discovery of correlated traits. Abstract

Plant phenology reflects the reproductive responses of plants to seasonal cycles and climate change. Herbarium collections can be valuable tools for filling in gaps in phenological studies. We investigated the seasonality of the reproductive phenology of Xiquexique species using circular statistics, estimated their flowering and fruiting periods by interpolation via inverse distance weighting based on herbarium specimens (n = 290), and analyzed the relationships among phenophases, temperature, and precipitation using generalized linear models. Xiquexique species flowered and fruited throughout the year, with X. gounellei exhibiting peak flowering in February and peak fruiting in March, while X. tuberculatus exhibited those peaks in August–October and August, respectively, with decreased intensity during the austral winter. The maps produced through interpolation showed higher probabilities of flowering and fruiting between February and August at sites with mean annual rainfall rates between 500 and 800 mm. Temperature and precipitation were positively correlated with flowering. Xiquexique tuberculatus is important for providing continuous resources to pollinators and seed dispersers in the Caatinga. Herbarium collections and interpolation methods for filling in gaps concerning the reproductive ecology of Cactaceae can aid in better understanding altered phenological patterns resulting from environmental changes. Abstract

Advancing functional ecology depends fundamentally on the availability of data on reproductive traits, including those from tropical plants, which have been historically underrepresented in global trait databases. Although some valuable databases have been created recently, they are mainly restricted to temperate areas and vegetative traits such as leaf and wood traits. Here, we present Rock n' Seeds, a database of seed functional traits and germination experiments from Brazilian rock outcrop vegetation, recognized as outstanding centers of diversity and endemism. Data were compiled through a systematic literature search, resulting in 103 publications from which seed functional traits were extracted. The database includes information on 16 functional traits for 383 taxa from 148 genera, 50 families, and 25 orders. These 16 traits include two dispersal, six production, four morphological, two biophysical, and two germination traits—the major axes of the seed ecological spectrum. The database also provides raw data for 48 germination experiments, for a total of 10,187 records for 281 taxa. Germination experiments in the database assessed the effect of a wide range of abiotic and biotic factors on germination and different dormancy-breaking treatments. Notably, 8255 of these records include daily germination counts. This input will facilitate synthesizing germination data and using this database for a myriad of ecological questions. Given the variety of seed traits and the extensive germination information made available by this database, we expect it to be a valuable resource advancing comparative functional ecology and guiding seed-based restoration and biodiversity conservation in tropical megadiverse ecosystems. Abstract

Objetivo: Analisar as práticas alimentares e o estado nutricional de crianças de 6 meses a 2 anos de idade em relação ao aleitamento materno exclusivo e a introdução da alimentação complementar e comparar com os dez passos para uma alimentação saudável do guia alimentar para menores de dois anos do Ministério da Saúde. Métodos: Estudo transversal, quantitativo, descritivo realizado entre janeiro e dezembro de 2018 na Estratégia de Saúde da Família de um município do Rio Grande do Sul, com um censo de 45 crianças. A coleta de dados incluiu a aplicação de um questionário estruturado baseado nos dez passos para uma alimentação saudável do guia alimentar para crianças menores de dois anos do Ministério da Saúde, além da avaliação nutricional por meio da verificação de peso e estatura, classificada pelas curvas de crescimento da Organização Mundial de Saúde. Os resultados foram considerados significativos a um nível de significância máximo de 5% (p≤0,05) e o software utilizado foi o SPSS versão 22.0. Resultados: As práticas alimentares analisadas mostraram que 20,0% (n=9) das crianças receberam aleitamento materno exclusivo pelo período de 6 meses, 4,4% (n=2) tiveram aleitamento materno total por mais de 6 meses e que a maioria recebeu introdução da alimentação complementar antes dos 4 meses de idade (73,3%; n=33). Quanto ao estado nutricional, a maioria das crianças apresentou Eutrofia (60,0%; n=27). Conclusão: Identificou-se que as práticas alimentares das crianças avaliadas não foram atendidas conforme os dez passos, apesar de o estado nutricional apresentar Eutrofia, na maioria dos casos.

Abstract

The Brazilian olive oil production has been growing in recent decades and largest plantations are on two different zones, from Serra da Mantiqueira (states of Minas Gerais and São Paulo) and Campanha Gaúcha (state of Rio Grande do Sul). The total planted area, in 2022, reached approximately 6500 hectares. The aim of the present study was to characterize the sensory and analytical parameters of extra virgin olive oils (EVOO) from Southwestern (Serra da Mantiqueira) and Southern (Campanha Gaúcha) Brazil regions. Twenty‐two EVOO samples were obtained from different cultivars of unlike regions. Quality parameters, oxidative stability, phenolic compounds ortho‐diphenols and fatty acids were analyzed and relationships with olive variety or region. From the chemical perspective, the EVOO exhibited all parameters within the necessary to be qualified as extra virgin, according to international standard definitions. All samples showed a good quality of sensory perceptions and a high level of polyphenols, which are varied among samples but was more intense in Campanha Gaúcha olive oils. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
