This study involved interviewing Canadian principals (N = 37) to determine how they responded to students with special education needs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Yamamoto et al.'s (2014) concept of critical incidents and Heine et al.'s (2006) meaning maintenance model were used to evaluate the transformational power of principals' pandemic experiences in order to reimagine inclusive education. Findings revealed that these critical incidents broadly fell into four categories: 1) family support and the complications associated with partnering with parents virtually, 2) meeting students' needs in new and often innovative ways, 3) disparities in student experiences as a result of virtual schooling and 4) responses required in light of logistical and technical challenges.

The ethic of care is a moral philosophy that has been used to describe and guide the work of educators, especially those working with students with special education needs (SEN). In this study, 36 principals and vice principals from four provinces in Canada were interviewed about their work with students with SEN during the pandemic. Responses were analyzed using the ethic of care framework. Accordingly, responses indicated that principals were particularly aware of, and responsive towards, the wide range of need experienced by students, their families, and school staff. Principals appeared especially concerned about the social needs of their students with SEN, the emotional support needs of the students' families, and the teachers' distress at not being able to meet all the educational needs of their students. Although most principals described the emotional toll of their work during the pandemic, none identified efforts directed towards self-care. This paper considers these findings in regard to motivational displacement as it relates to an ethic of care and calls for a broader consideration of need within education, such that support is extended to students, school staff and school leaders as the most effective means to foster healthy, future-ready schools. While the placement of students with complex learning needs in Canadian classrooms may be mandated in policy, the development of inclusive-positive practices requires direct, and at times delicate, support and encouragement from principals. Without genuine engagement and buy-in from school staff, students in inclusive classrooms may not find meaningful opportunities in those spaces. The framework of self-determination theory provides a path by which principals can catalyze attitudinal changes (autonomy), best practices (competences), and enriched community relationships (relatedness). This study includes interviews with 21 principals. The findings of this study suggest that affecting attitudinal changes requires specific and comprehensive practices.

The present study focused on examining how individuals make adaptations while reading non-linear graphic text by examining the role of executive functioning, as well as identifying and describing the reading processes individuals use while reading. Sixty-seven students in Grades 9 through 12 engaged in verbal reporting while reading graphic text, in addition to answering comprehension questions and engaging in tasks designed to measure executive functioning. Both planning ability and a comprehensive measure of executive functioning were significantly correlated with graphic text comprehension, and the comprehensive measure significantly predicted comprehension of graphic text. The researchers identified that reading the text using a process generalized from other types of text (left-to-right, top-to-bottom) was negatively related to comprehension, suggesting that taking a more dynamic and adaptive approach to reading non-linear text may be more effective. Reading processes used with graphic text are discussed and described using the language of participants, and implications for practice are discussed.

Program designers develop a wide range of intervention programs to address the social challenges faced by children and youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) but it is not clear how those programs are perceived by families of youth with ASD and the extent to which those programs are accessed. To explore the perceptions of families of youth with ASD, 12 youths with ASD and 15 of their parents participated in 45--60 minute interviews about social intervention programs and completed the Social Responsiveness Scale, Second Edition. According to the families, the social programs created to help youth with ASD to socialize have not addressed their needs. The adolescents sought programs that provided activities that matched their interests and that were appropriate for their developmental stage. The parents reported that they were frustrated by barriers to service and weaknesses of design, which were obstacles to accessing programs that supported their children's development.

Positive home-school relationships are essential for students with SEN, and this was especially true during the initial months of the pandemic lockdown, when parents took on more responsibility for schooling. Qualitative analyses suggested that principals and parents struggled to make connections during the first months of emergency schooling but ultimately recognized the value of family-focused planning and working together as co-educators. Participants identified "partner with parents" and "develop iterative practice" as steps moving forward. Clinical interventions have been effective at increasing social skills of youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, generalization of those skills to non-clinical environments is often low. To reduce this generalization gap, community-based programs have been designed to help youth develop social skills in naturalistic settings. This paper describes a community-based social-skills intervention for youths with ASD aged 7-12, which was designed to build on the findings of a previous study. In this program, youths with ASD co-operated with siblings and peers in structured and unstructured play over the course of four weeks. The researchers conducted extensive observations of the play by the youths and conducted interviews with the youths with ASD, their parents, and program staff. Both in our observations and in the perceptions of the parents, the youths with ASD increased their play and socialization. Using Vygotsky's (1978) socio-cultural theory as a guiding framework, we describe the components of this intervention that contributed to the changes observed in the youths' play and social interactions. We developed a model that includes components of instruction, interest, play- based learning, and the structure of program, and which provides an explanation of intervention effectiveness to be explored in future research.

The role of parents in supporting at-home learning increased dramatically in the spring of 2020. Schools in most Canadian provinces closed physically due to COVID-19, and remote-learning options were quickly developed to ensure continued education for students. Many students with special educational needs, who typically benefit from a range of supports from school, became reliant on parents to provide means of access to and participation in remote learning. Using an online survey, we explored the perceptions of 263 Canadian parents of children with special education needs with regard to their self-efficacy and supports from schools. We conducted multiple linear regression analyses for each of three dependent variables (academic supports, parent self-efficacy, and social-emotional supports); independent variables included student grade level, education placement, and total school-provided supports prior to the pandemic. Findings indicated that most parents engaged in remote learning and lacked confidence in their ability to support the learning of their child. Parent self-efficacy was related to social-emotional supports from schools and not to academic supports. Parents of children in elementary grades, and of those who had received more supports from school prior to COVID-19, reported feeling better supported in social-emotional areas by the school. Schools should explore ways of building strong collaborative relationships between educators and parents, as well as continuing to find ways of supporting families and students in both in- and out-of-school places. All learners benefit when schools foster an environment for teachers to enhance their teaching skills. Pre-service education programs are often where this important process begins. Using a Global Concept Mapping method, pre-service teachers across Canada were interviewed about the personal and professional experiences that contributed to their instructional practices within inclusive classrooms. Participants sorted 93 unique statements into categories. They were asked to rate on a scale of 1 (not at all important) to 6 (very important) how important each experience would be to their instructional practices. Mentoring relationship statements were rated significantly more important than the others. Practicum experiences and those within the course part of the education program were rated as equally important and more important than professional development. Their perceived least important experiences were those related to past jobs/positions and personal experiences with people identified with diverse learning needs. Understanding the specific experiences that influence pre-service teachers’ perspectives of their inclusive instructional practices will help teacher education programs connect to what motivates teachers’ early experiences in becoming inclusive educators.
